These Eye(glasse)s

Branching from another thread, this is a pair of eyeglasses I ordered from ZenniOptical.com for $19 (plus $6.99 shipping to Canada for the four pairs I ordered):

http://zennioptical.com/cart/d_6905.jpg

I ordered the ones in purple/periwinkle, which I am excited for. I've never had any "fun" glasses because of the prohibitive cost, so to buy these cheap ones is very exciting.

http://zennioptical.com/cart/d_6447.jpg

I also got these in red, and the yellow pair below. The wire ones were only $8. They may break more quickly than your standard wire pair, but I am gentle on my glasses generally (when my dog isn't eating them.)

This website has a lot of information about what you need to know in terms of prescription, measurements and trustworthy sites - http://glassyeyes.blogspot.com/

I'd love to see what everyone else finds in terms of cute cheap glasses!

Oh, if anyone wants the links to these specifically since the site is hard to navigate, here they are:

Tza those are both fantastic.

isn't most of the cost in getting the lenses made?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 05:58 (sixteen years ago)

yes, but the lenses on this site seem to be wholesale price lenses.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 02:35 (sixteen years ago)

Zenni says my order shipped today EEK can't wait! It's coming from Hong Kong, so will probably take a week or more :( My housemate has twice gotten packages this week and both times I got irrationally excited and then downtrodden.

mineminefusic (Finefinemusic), Friday, 17 October 2008 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

am i retarded or do none of these sites sell regular sunglasses frames with prescription lenses? they only seem to offer clip-ons.

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Friday, 17 October 2008 19:42 (sixteen years ago)

it's hard to find decent dude glasses

Jordan, Friday, 17 October 2008 19:46 (sixteen years ago)

i have trouble finding glasses: less so now, since they've started making narrower frames, but when i go trying on frames i can usually only find 2 or 3 that actually look good.

☑ (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 17 October 2008 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

And seriously, help me out with this. Lenscrafters and those places are out of reach for my insurance dollars. The only place that will cut me a break is my own doctor's office.

Does any of that sound right?

☑ (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 17 October 2008 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

i don't have insurance dollars.

the biggest rip EVER is the contact lens "fitting fee" - an additional $80 on top of your eye exam to renew the same exact prescription for a box of little plastic things. wtf. seriously.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Friday, 17 October 2008 20:19 (sixteen years ago)

Rubyredd: sunglasses - never noticed that about Zenni! Goggles4u.com offers sunglass lens tinting, I think on any lens.

The only insurance coverage I get is $50 every other two years for my eye exam (which cost $75).. that's why I am so happy that Zenni et al are affordable.

mineminefusic (Finefinemusic), Friday, 17 October 2008 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

i didn't sign up for our vision plan because i wasn't planning on getting contacts, although i'm going to opt for it next year since i want to have lenses for driving. i can't complain, though - my regular ins. gives me an eye exam every year with a small co-pay, and i got vintage frames from a local store for around $40. they recommended an ultra-cheap optician in chinatown who put in the prescription for another $40.

lauren, Friday, 17 October 2008 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

I just paid $75 for my annual contact lenses exam and another 100 for lenses only to find out 2 weeks later that I can't wear them anymore. WAH!!

OK, I'm still in the market for new glasses. My father suggested I get some frameless ones like "his girlfriend" S. Palin. I think that's the last thing I want. I would love to get one of these cheap pairs online but am v nervous about getting glasses w/o trying them on.

Tza - do you mind telling what brand those are?

Zangelbert Bingledack (ENBB), Friday, 17 October 2008 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

ENBB - I will provide full quality report when I get mine in order to sway you to the dark side :) I have tried on lots of glasses in the past, so I knew which styles suited me reasonably, and I measured the hell out of my glasses to ensure any I ordered would fit. Sadly, my gigantic head (proportional to my height, at least) ruled out a lot of really adorable frames..

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Friday, 17 October 2008 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

the ones i posted upthread? i would have to check at home. they were on goggles4u i think?

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Friday, 17 October 2008 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

zenni will do a tint on any glasses they do-- we just ordered 2 pair, really looking forward to having prescription sunglasses for driving.

yeah i saw that, but i really want a particular kind of sunglass-frame:

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Sunday, 26 October 2008 23:28 (sixteen years ago)

Update: I got all the eyeglasses.

Good news: 4 out of 5 are pretty cute on me.
Bad news: The optometrist I visited wrote a +1.00 where there should have been a -1.00 on the chart I asked her for help with, and trusting her, I did not compare the chart I ordered off of with the prescription she gave me. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Anyway I am going to take one pair to Walmart to have its lens fixed for $30, and mail the rest back (apparently will cost me $10 per lens, so $30 plus s&h) to fix three and return that one pair that simply didn't look good on me. Sigh. Lesson learned, I suppose, but I was pretty depressed when I tried on the five pairs in a row and found not one would allow me to see any more clearly than before.. I am going to write a letter to my optometrist in the hopes she will take some responsibility for her error and give me a partial credit so that I don't lose all this money out of pocket. Still, spent about $80 for the glasses and stand to spend around another $60-70 (after refund for the one pair) and that's still less than I paid for the one pair of glasses on my nose at the momeny. The quality is pretty decent, especially the plastic ones. It's been a long time since I had wire glasses so I can't comment on if those are better or worse quality.

Haven't got any pictures except for this silliness:

http://photos-h.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-snc1/v350/224/57/516053577/n516053577_939479_8789.jpg

Me + purple frames = true love

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Monday, 27 October 2008 14:15 (sixteen years ago)

oh man! she should totally reimburse you for her mistake, except she will probably say she doesn't have to since you didn't order the glasses from her.

those are cute!!

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 27 October 2008 14:18 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I am pretty bummed that she could very well be all "I wrote it correctly on your prescription!" which is true but she was so nice about filling out the form and seemed intrigued about there being cheap options online. Blah. Plus side, the glasses came in about two weeks and they're all awesome! They're just not awesome for me.. yet. I hope to be able to wear the purple glasses for my birthday in two weeks, they're the ones I am taking over to Walmart for apparently three day service!

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Monday, 27 October 2008 14:20 (sixteen years ago)

Lex I love those! Sorry about all the hassle you're going through but those are great.

Since I can't wear contacts anymore I got another pair of glasses:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/expatrica/newglasses.jpg

You can't really see the best part about them which is that they're a sort of deep purple on top and fade around the edges so they're a beigy green on the bottom. I wanted something a little more bold and fun.

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Thursday, 6 November 2008 17:46 (sixteen years ago)

yes I agree with Ruby those look awesome and I get the slightest hint of the colour thing you explained, I'm sure it's more obvious in person!

Tza I'd look but I can't browse image-heavy sites at work.. get something standard and reliable and awesome and then go buy a bunch of fun pairs online ;)

I ordered these on the 29th and they are waiting for me to pick up at the post office tonight, very excited:

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 6 November 2008 17:58 (sixteen years ago)

yeah at least the upside is that i'll have my script now and can order fun cheap things online. that is, in a few months when i can afford to...

;n_n; (tehresa), Thursday, 6 November 2008 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

hahaha yeah I totally get that. having a copy of your prescription is so liberating!

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 6 November 2008 18:02 (sixteen years ago)

I'm getting frustrated that for the most part, I can only get glasses through my insurance company at an actual eye doctor's office. No online stuff or lenscrafters. So now I'm looking for an eye doctor who's got a decent selection.

This sounds silly, but is there any place online where you can upload a picture of your face and "try" some on?

☑ (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 6 November 2008 18:24 (sixteen years ago)

I read about the cheap online glasses thing a while ago and have been seriously considering it. My vision is terrible (-9.5 in the bad eye) so I wear contacts 95% of the time. My aunt worked at an optometrist's office last time I got glasses and said everyone checked them out when they arrived because of the engineering marvels necessary to make them wearable. She got them for me wholesale and they were still like $140.

Can I really get ~ $20 glasses in my terrible prescription, different in both eyes, with lenses that aren't an inch thick and super heavy?

a better command of the mummy language (joygoat), Thursday, 6 November 2008 18:48 (sixteen years ago)

pp, you are lucky your insurance even covers glasses! i don't have any, but when i did, it only covered exam, with a $15 copay.

;n_n; (tehresa), Thursday, 6 November 2008 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

My insurance also doesn't cover glasses, hence my resorting to trying stuff out online this year. I do get $50 off eye exams but nothing for the frames or lenses.. I ordered five pairs of glasses and spent about $85 (US) all told. I feel the quality is *slightly* less than the $150 pair of glasses I bought in a store in Toronto, but for $130 in savings per frame I am PERFECTLY HAPPY to accept that. I am careful with my glasses generally and the plastic frames I bought feel every bit as stury as the old pair I have from Guess.

Joygoat, I do have a relatively mild prescription so I'm not sure about the options for someone with worse eyes, but I definitely have different prescriptions in each eye and that was no problem.
Looking at Goggles4U suggests that you can pay for thinner lenses: http://goggles4u.com/detail.asp?PID=27215 - see the three columns you can choose from?
What I like about G4U is the cost you see there includes frames and lens and shipping.

Zenni offers: Premium Photochromic lenses for (Clear indoors, darkens outdoors in sunlight ) $39.00
Upgrade to 1.61 index lenses for $17.00
Upgrade to 1.67 index lenses for $37.00
Premium anti reflective coating $4.95
Sunglass color tint coating (7 available) $4.95

I feel like I HAVE seen a place that let you upload an image or something but I can't find it. Maybe http://www.39dollarglasses.com/ ? Maybe they let you print out the frame and hold it up to your own face (which makes more sense, in terms of accurate measurements).

So in summary you may have to pay $50 for a pair, but $50 != $150! :)

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 6 November 2008 20:00 (sixteen years ago)

So you spent $85 on five pairs of glasses, or $13 for each pair?

FFS, I'll get seven and wear a different pair each day. Hell, I can even reserve a couple of pairs as my "rough-housing" pair.

☑ (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 6 November 2008 21:28 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, I spent $8 ea on two different wire pairs, $19 or so each on two adorable plastic pairs (incl. purple ones upthread) and then $25 on a separate pair from Goggles4U ($25 included the "free" shipping; Zenni charged me $6.00 shipping for the other four pairs.) This is what I'm saying!

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 6 November 2008 21:58 (sixteen years ago)

xp looooove the first ones tehresa!

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 6 November 2008 21:58 (sixteen years ago)

oh yeah if you look at the first post to this thread you can sort of see the other glasses I ordered.

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 6 November 2008 21:59 (sixteen years ago)

Booker van Permalink (Hunt3r), Thursday, 6 November 2008 22:04 (sixteen years ago)

i keep looking at the photochromic lenses in office window trying to detect change, but they always look sorta the same to me. (they don't start clear, they always have tint, but they get darker in a bright car, then even darker than that outside. er, supposedly.

Booker van Permalink (Hunt3r), Thursday, 6 November 2008 22:17 (sixteen years ago)

so i ended up with a sort of rose colored metal with a plastic purple inset in the middle, and purple arms(?). i haven't found a pic yet and i'm too drunk to post a pic of myself but i will soon. so excited that i have a script to buy them online cheap now, though!

;n_n; (tehresa), Friday, 7 November 2008 06:41 (sixteen years ago)

These are the ones I picked up last night! They're a little wacky in that the arms are two coloured stripes that are slightly different than the two colour stripes on the front, but I also kind of love them. I only ordered them on October 29th and they were ready for pickup last night, so good for Goggles4U for getting them made and shipped so fast! They were also a lot nicer to me, customer service wise - when I ordered with the wrong prescription (optometrists' fault, grr) Goggles4U refunded the full frame price and half the lens, whereas Zenni will refund only 50% of my total purchase price because they "can't fix just one lens" or some such crap. Oh well. Goggles4U also refunded my credit card instantly whereas Zenni is waiting until they receive my glasses (understandable).

Here I am:

It's so great to SEE!!!

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Friday, 7 November 2008 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

i'm extremely conservative when it comes to glasses. it was a big deal for me to pick the dark pewter pair over one of the many black frames i was considering (thank you, laurel).

Lauren, TZA's glasses-getting has reminded me to go to FF's and pick out some for me! And I should make use of my insurance in 2008. Maybe in a couple of weeks you can return the favor?

Fred Dalton Township (Laurel), Friday, 7 November 2008 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

totally! i don't need any excuse to shop.

lauren, Friday, 7 November 2008 19:53 (sixteen years ago)

are those from a store or online tza? they remind me SO much of the ones you chose at the top of the thread haha.. I guess we can't shake our particular personal styles!

FWIW I ordered a few pairs of more "plain" glasses than the ones I got in the mail yesterday - they just haven't arrived, and these funky ones had :D

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Friday, 7 November 2008 20:17 (sixteen years ago)

lex you are so lucky you have a perfect face for glasses! jealous :(

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Friday, 7 November 2008 20:17 (sixteen years ago)

no no my dear I just take a thousand pictures til I get one semi-decent ;) I have worn glasses for such a long time though that I definitely feel weird looking without them!

http://i331.photobucket.com/albums/l442/acrobins/glasses2.jpg

one of my pairs (the others are similar black frames only not so rounded on top and the inside bits are black/white plaid)

I'd like to buy more MORE MORE glasses, with a bit more variety in colour. I've never tried this seemingly inexpensive way of purchasing online, but I don't think I would because my weird face makes it hard to find flattering glasses. On the plus side, my parents work for three unions (mom 2x unions, dad 1x unions) so I get decent coverage options on the more expensive frames in shops and stuff.

Fred Dalton Township (Laurel), Monday, 10 November 2008 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

those are very cute SS!

I have a big head too but I've tried on 1,000 or so glasses in stores and so I know which shapes suit my face.. ordering online is a bummer because I see a lot that are just 1-2 mm too small for my head that I adore. Boo.

I don't know about those Lafont ones but maybe I'm too simple? I saw stuff like that on Zenni but thought it was just too much. Maybe my head is too big for a mega-intense frame.

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Monday, 10 November 2008 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 06:15 (sixteen years ago)

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 06:16 (sixteen years ago)

yay wait til you get them, the packaging is hilarious but the glasses will rock! post pics!

I sent back all my wrong prescription ones and now I only have the blue half-rim ones posted upthread, I love them, but having had a taste for a variety I want MORE MORE MORE!!

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Friday, 21 November 2008 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

i found a bunch of frames i like on zenni too (the sunglasses are from goggles4u). the problem is that my face is really narrow around my eye area, so there's not that many cool plastic frames that i can wear - i need around the 128mm mark. my mum has agreed to bankroll a couple of pairs as a birthday present.

i hope you don't pray to jesus with that mouth (Rubyredd), Saturday, 22 November 2008 04:31 (sixteen years ago)

joygoat-- you can definitely order super strong stuff online, from zenni, at least. toby has crazy thick glasses, and they didn't charge a penny more for getting it right. his sunglasses look great, mine look pretty good, although i have the same problem as rubyredd in that i wanted bigger frames and they told me my face was too small, so these are a little more on the practical side of things...

colette, Sunday, 23 November 2008 03:02 (sixteen years ago)

my friend told me if you have a really strong prescription it's better to go with a smaller frame so the curve isn't so drastic? something like that. i am not saying it right, but a smaller lens avoids a drastic shap (thin in middle and super thick at the edges).

jordans-menendi (tehresa), Sunday, 23 November 2008 03:04 (sixteen years ago)

jordans-menendi (tehresa), Sunday, 23 November 2008 03:28 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i'm not really sure about 1, 3, and 6. i love those green ones too, in theory, just not sure i won't look like a dork in them. but for $20 or so, it's worth finding out!

i hope you don't pray to jesus with that mouth (Rubyredd), Sunday, 23 November 2008 03:31 (sixteen years ago)

my friend told me if you have a really strong prescription it's better to go with a smaller frame so the curve isn't so drastic? something like that.

a larger frame will involve thicker glasses at the periphery. thickness can also be reduced through the kind of lens you get.

gabbneb, Sunday, 23 November 2008 04:18 (sixteen years ago)

i want to do this but i am afraid. i know that when i go to the eye doctor i end up trying on like 20 pairs of glasses and 19 of them are wrong for my face or too small for my eyes or the wrong color or something. like how am i going to buy frames over the internet with this weird shaped head and huge eyes? i like the frames i have now but i need new ones, they are getting kinda grody.

bear of the teddy (harbl), Sunday, 23 November 2008 13:41 (sixteen years ago)

harbl that is the same problem i was having - whenever i've tried on frames i'm lucky if i find 2 or 3 that actually look okay on me. i can't say this for sure since i haven't received any yet, but hopefully by getting frames with similar dimensions to the ones i already have, they should fit pretty well. and they so cheap, you only lose out on a small amount of money if they look really bad.

i hope you don't pray to jesus with that mouth (Rubyredd), Sunday, 23 November 2008 16:48 (sixteen years ago)

which is why i've always found buying glasses so fuckin stressful in the past: 'holy shit these are like $400 and i'm gonnna have to live with them for a 2-5yr minimum!'

i hope you don't pray to jesus with that mouth (Rubyredd), Sunday, 23 November 2008 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

yeah. this issue is one that plagues me as well! i haven't been able to bring myself to order the cheap ones online yet!

jordans-menendi (tehresa), Sunday, 23 November 2008 16:52 (sixteen years ago)

it's not even a cheap factor - when i got my glasses, i was willing to pay a decent amount of money because i hadn't gotten new ones in so long and the last ones cost about $30 total, but there was really only 1 pair in the entire store that i thought looked ok (and it was not one of the fancy designer pairs).

jordans-menendi (tehresa), Sunday, 23 November 2008 16:53 (sixteen years ago)

"a larger frame will involve thicker glasses at the periphery."

only if you are shortsighted.

Finefinemusic, i have to thank you for making me aware of Zenni Optical! I recently lost a $200+ of eyeglasses and had been watching movies + driving in a less than optimal state for a while. I ordered two pairs of glasses from Zenni, got them today, and one of them ($19) is identical to my lost, expensive pair. so much so that my sister pointed it out. they totally fit my face and everything.

seriously, this may be the best thing ilx has brought to my life.

i'm a -8.5 in one eye and -9 on another. you should see how thick these glasses are. literally a half-inch on the side. actually, you can see in both pics how thick they are from how much they distort the space around my eyes - my eyes literally look about half as big as they really are. but i just told the optometrist fuck you man, i want gigantic malcolm x glasses.

this guy, fraser, travels to palermo and madrid and marseilles and all over the goddman place to root around in ancient forgotten boxes of glasses, many of them never worn, and brings them back to london to sell for about the same price as a new pair at specsavers or whatever the fuck

his web "presence" is shitty but if you want a new pair of glasses go check him out, you will not regret it. i got a pair of original pierre marly wrap-arounds (http://www.cofrase.com/triangledor/marly/uk/historik.htm) and he put prescription lenses in, matching the original lens color

dmr, Friday, 25 March 2011 01:09 (fourteen years ago)

ooh i had my exam yesterday, but i got my pupils dilated and i couldn't see, so i really couldn't try on any frames.

i do, however, need to do this soon, because my eyes are getting progressively more irritated by contacts in the past year. given that i tried about 5 different brands last year, doc says the only solution is to wear contacts less and glasses more.

i think i just need to take someone with me to find frames that look good on my face and then try to find an approximation on googles4u or whatever.

ENBB, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:17 (fourteen years ago)

yeah that's why i was asking for shape/size tips at the store. but i am still pretty clueless. my technique will probably be: get really cheap ones in case i hate them.

coming from me, who has written many bestsellers (tehresa), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:18 (fourteen years ago)

try a bunch on at a store if you don't know what suits you - I just kinda wing it nowadays but the first few pairs I ordered, I used my existing glasses as a reference - measured the width, length of the arms, etc so that I knew they would look the right size on me. Then, it's trial and error. I have about 5 pairs that I've accumulated that just didn't work on me, but since I only pay $10-30 it worked out.. don't be tempted by Zenni's $8 wire frame ones because they consistently always look junky. What looks bulky online is a normal size & what looks thin online is cheap IRL. IMO.

also if you are getting a prescription.. get your doc to give your your PPD (pupillary distance) - otherwise you can just have a friend do it with a ruler.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:29 (fourteen years ago)

burned in as, I paid some $$ for some nice vintage frames that look awesome in the huge and helpful pics that the seller provided, but they just didn't look that good when I tried them on irl

i think drake distracts (dayo), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 14:09 (fourteen years ago)

well, you shouldn't be paying brick & mortar prices online. :) the incentive for me is that it costs me $300 for two pairs of glasses & lenses IRL, but can be as low as $40 online. If I have to buy a third pair to find the right fit, still works out for me.. but I've tried hundreds of pairs on at shops so I know exactly which styles look good on me. Wish that I could figure out my camera angles next! ;)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 14:23 (fourteen years ago)

so sad about these glasses, upthread - http://i37.tinypic.com/afkjmc.jpg - got some sort of spots on the lens (hair spray damage, maybe? it doesn't scratch off..) and now I can't wear them without living in a fog :( gotta find a place in toronto that'll replace the frames cheaply.. she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 13:56 (fourteen years ago)

haha thanks! I found my current pair in a vintage eyeglass shop in nyc. I have a pair of vintage combo frames from the 60s that I got from a website, look beautiful but 1. are really heavy 2. don't seem to curve correctly at the nose bridge or something, so that I always get dizzy and 3. just don't look that 'good' on me!

i think drake distracts (dayo), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 14:15 (fourteen years ago)

you could try taking them into an optometrist's and seeing if they can be adjusted

just1n3, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 14:33 (fourteen years ago)

that's true! I haven't had a reliable optometrist in years though

The Pierce colors look the best on you imo. I may do a few try-ons of these soon, too. Did you already have a prescription from a local optometrist?

rockapads, Saturday, 23 April 2011 17:00 (fourteen years ago)

i think you could rock pretty much any of those styles, elmo, but i do agree with rockapads that the pierce colours are particularly good on you.

just1n3, Saturday, 23 April 2011 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

pierce

thetan is cheatin (cozen), Saturday, 23 April 2011 18:49 (fourteen years ago)

i def like the color pierce but i also really like the roosevelt shape on you

tehresa, Saturday, 23 April 2011 22:55 (fourteen years ago)

Huxley feels too small, maybe? The Roosevelt is a classy shape with a nice straight horizontal across the bridge. I want to like the Winston but the downward notch continues/emphasizes the angles of your eyebrows, up then down then up then down...there's too much noise.

Voting for one of the middle two. :)

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Saturday, 23 April 2011 23:06 (fourteen years ago)

hmmm... thanks guys! i agree that the color of the pierce is v flattering, but i'm not too keen on the boxy shape. it's almost too contemporary for my taste. i'm favoring the roosevelt pretty heavily right now. the huxleys come in a light amber color that might counteract the thickness of the frame. i dunno, i've got a few more days before i ship them back.

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Monday, 9 May 2011 18:02 (fourteen years ago)

kinda want half wire half plastic, but after years of lol hueg goggles it might be time for some wire frames, i dunno

i hate shopping

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Monday, 9 May 2011 18:06 (fourteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

i officially need glasses as of last week and from 5pm today it is free glasses (+£5 shipping or something) at lensway uk.

thinking of these but i dunno is my face too round/heartfaced? people say get angular glasses if you have a round face? http://www.lensway.co.uk/glasses/frames/joseph-marc-4031-grey/prod24040.html or http://www.lensway.co.uk/glasses/frames/joseph-marc-4032-brown-tortoise/prod24047.html. i guess the grey ones are bit boxier.

obviously at this price it hardly matters, but i think it's one per household.

caek, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 14:11 (fourteen years ago)

I don't know what you look like tbh but those are some classy glasses!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 14:14 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah those are both good but I do think the round face boxier frames is a good rule and those are both quite round. Can you return them if you don't like them.

I got new glasses last weekend. I love them but they're not online so I can't link to them. They're from this place that designs their own frames and it's where I've gotten my last two pairs. Love these dudes and their specs so much. Should be ready by the weekend. Can't wait!

i don't think i can return them. it's more that i get one shot at this price than the money that is the concern though.

caek, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

lol u do not look like a baked bean and your face isn't that round. If you really like those (and they're good so you should) then go for it. If they suck at least you didn't spead a lot and can get another pair and use these as backup.

aw. i didn't buy any!
what did you get?

tehresa, Thursday, 26 May 2011 12:16 (fourteen years ago)

Hey, I was posting what I got and xposted with you asking me what I got! SYNERGY!

I got these: http://www.coastalcontacts.com/glasses/frames/derek-cardigan-7005-black/prod27005.html

I love them and they look just like a pair from Zenni that I almost ordered but didn't because they only came in pink or orange tiger striped and I wanted black. But I'm a little nervous about them now, though, because even though the bridge and lens width measurements are OTM for me (and the same as the ones from Zenni), the listed frame width is really small. Like, way too small to be size-classified as "large" frames, so I don't know if it's a typo or what. This is what I get for trying to take advantage of a free glasses sale at work when I can only access commercial websites for ten minute increments.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Thursday, 26 May 2011 12:26 (fourteen years ago)

Also, I didn't notice all the math symbols on them (thank god they're subtle) which is a bit too cute for me, especially since I'm a god damn lawyer with a lit degree.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Thursday, 26 May 2011 12:29 (fourteen years ago)

fun! hope they work out! the genius of this sale is you're only out shipping if they're ridic.

tehresa, Thursday, 26 May 2011 12:29 (fourteen years ago)

I'm looking again and according to the measurements, the temple length is longer than the frames are wide, which is highly unlikely, so maybe they just switched the numbers.

Well, shipping and lens coating. I am astigmatic so I always get anti-glare coating because it helps cut down on the annoying halos around lights.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Thursday, 26 May 2011 12:35 (fourteen years ago)

dayo, Thursday, 26 May 2011 13:37 (fourteen years ago)

They are glasses so even if they are too trendy you can get a other pair in a year or two.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Thursday, 26 May 2011 14:09 (fourteen years ago)

i think lensway uk must be the same company. a lot of the website layout looks the same and when i phoned tocheck something with my free order i got put through to an american call centre.

i looked at some of those derek cardigan ones but i decided the maths symbols were a bit too xkcd for me, but that's mainly because i'm a self-loathing physicist : )

caek, Thursday, 26 May 2011 14:45 (fourteen years ago)

i had to change the PD because when i printed out that PDF of a relfected ruler for self-measuring in the mirror, i had scale set to 90% in the print dialog!

they work out more expensive then the ones i usually buy from goggles4u or zennioptical, but they def have a more 'fashionable' range of frames.

the ones caek posted are a take on the oliver peoples 'gregory peck' which tbh are a p iconic look. i really wanted a pair as sunglasses but they made my face look too long

dayo, Thursday, 26 May 2011 23:28 (fourteen years ago)

Got my glasses and they are CRA-ZAY. I'll take a picture tomorrow after I go to the long-suffering eyeglass shop in my building to have them adjusted. (I'm always down there having them fix a screw or pop a lens back in but I would never buy glasses there because their selection sucks or get an eye exam there because it's kind of skeevy).

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Thursday, 2 June 2011 23:58 (fourteen years ago)

how much can you adjust glasses? this is my first pair and i'm sure they aren't going to fit.

caek, Friday, 3 June 2011 10:18 (fourteen years ago)

They can adjust the heck out of the arms and the nose pieces (if they have nose pieces). On my regular everyday glasses, they had to adjust the arms so they are at obtuse angles to the frames \oo/, which sounds ridiculous but looks fine and is very comfortable.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Friday, 3 June 2011 11:42 (fourteen years ago)

they are kind of smaller on my face than i was expecting, and next time there is a sale i will get the slightly bigger versions (i got these for free pretty much, but they are now back to £60).

caek, Thursday, 16 June 2011 12:16 (fourteen years ago)

my eyes feel kind of strained/sore. not unbearable, but a noticeable relief when i take them off. is this normal and just me getting used to a new pair of glasses (my first)?

caek, Thursday, 16 June 2011 12:17 (fourteen years ago)

Your first ever pair of glasses? I think they might take some getting used to, yeah (I started wearing glasses at age 13 so I can't remember my initial adjustment period, but every time my prescription changes, I go through a day of perceiving everything as a lot taller than it is). Does wearing them make you feel dizzy or ill or off balance? If that's the case, you might have the wrong PD and you need to do something about that.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Thursday, 16 June 2011 12:24 (fourteen years ago)

That happens to me from time tto time. Xp

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 16 June 2011 12:25 (fourteen years ago)

yes, first pair ever. should really have got those from an optician rather than the internet, but the price was right.

i feel fine. no dizziness or whatever. it's like the faintest possible headache. i think maybe part of it is that the lenses are quite small and the frames are relatively thick, so they are right there in my vision. taking them off is a bit like taking non Rx sunglasses off.

caek, Thursday, 16 June 2011 12:26 (fourteen years ago)

I think they look good and very professor-like indeed.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:35 (fourteen years ago)

just1n3, Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:54 (fourteen years ago)

whenever I change glasses, even keeping the same prescription, I go through about 2-3 days of feeling slightly dizzy.

I bought a new pair of glasses with round frames as per the gregory peck linked above except the frames are too thick and not elegant at all so I look like a two bit hipster when I wear them

think I'll stick with my old ones for now

oh well

british sb power (dayo), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i wear contacts on the reg and if i switch to glasses i have a weird mild headachey adjustment period. i think it's the difference of the correction being right on your eye vs a half inch away? who knows?

jenny, those derek cardigans with the divide/multiply sign on them. do you think you could you cover the symbols with a sharpie or are they too big/prominent? your thoughts?

caek, Thursday, 1 September 2011 13:21 (thirteen years ago)

Hmmmm I don't think that would work because you'd still be able to discern them and it would look like you colored your glasses with a Sharpie. It's not as noticeable as I feared, however.

I have one pair! I haven't regularly worn glasses since sixth grade, up until this year. Then suddenly, I got glasses I liked wearing, my eyes have gotten drier, and now they seem like a good option!

I have a friend who has vision so wonky that he has to wear contacts AND glasses, and he has a habit of squinting or closing his eyes when thinking, because if he gets distracted his eyes tend to drift! He has a number of fashionable pairs of glasses. He is also an architect and lived in Barcelona for a bit, so...

i am kinda silly that way

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 6 October 2011 13:48 (thirteen years ago)

robyn, elmo: I do have about 15 pairs and yeah, some days I do get a little anxious about whether I'm ~choosing the right pair~ but it's nice to have at least a few options! I have a few: serious, funky, specific colours, nerdy, subtle.. I wear a certain 'perfect' black framed pair probably 50% of my time and rotate the others in off and on. I have a few pairs I just haven't worn for months because they fell out of my favour.

So yeah. No new glasses or even looking at glasses websites for me until my prescription changes!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 6 October 2011 14:05 (thirteen years ago)

I only have one pair in my new prescription but I'm getting my beloved Lafont "Darling" frames relensed after payday and I'm eligible for new frames through my insurance in Jan. I usually have three or four active pairs thanks to el cheapo internet retailers like Zenni.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 6 October 2011 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

so the ray bans i bought at lens crafters: i love them. have you seen the commercials for their fancy new system? they put this thing on the frames and take a picture and i thought it was a lot of hype but my vision out of those glasses is amazing. and the ones i'd ordered online using pd from the old 'look in the box' measurement i had done were really weird. i felt a little nauseous. too bad buying glasses in the store is so $$$$$ :(

tehresa, Thursday, 6 October 2011 23:27 (thirteen years ago)

Oh yeah, if you feel nauseated then those are not right. The crazy frames I bought over the summer that made me feel a little weird? Turns I mis-entered the PD and it was off by 1.5 mm. That little bit was enough to make them hard to wear.

You should get your PD measurement from your eye doctor and see if it's the same as the look-in-the-box measurement.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 7 October 2011 00:02 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i gotta see if the lc lady put it on my receipt for the glasses... i called my eye doc a while back and they said they don't have that measurement, i'd have to get it from an optician.

tehresa, Friday, 7 October 2011 00:27 (thirteen years ago)

oh and i sent the other glasses back.

tehresa, Friday, 7 October 2011 00:27 (thirteen years ago)

Those eye docs hold those pd's with a tight fist sometimes too!

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 7 October 2011 00:30 (thirteen years ago)

I know! My eye doc was really reluctant to give me mine, and when she did, she gave me a stern warning about internet glasses. Then when I came back to pick up my sunglasses (that I spent plenty on, so it's not like I'm taking advantage of my poor eye doc) the optician raved about my new glasses until I asked her to adjust them because I had ordered them on line. Then she got very grim and told me she could adjust them, but they would probably break, etc. etc. Phooey.

Although I do get nervous having only one pair of glasses in my current Rx. What if I break them or lose them or I am looking down over over a railing and they fall off my face and into the river or a pigeon steals them??????

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 7 October 2011 00:36 (thirteen years ago)

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 7 October 2011 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

Hey jenny, what is the actual frame width on those winged math symbol specs you got? I love them but I think the only way I could pull them off is as sunglasses.

just1n3, Friday, 7 October 2011 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

(I ask because their measurements don't seem accurate online)

just1n3, Friday, 7 October 2011 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

Derek Cardigan 7005. Coastal Contacts gives the frame width as (lens width x 2)+bridge measurement* without taking the actual frames into account. So that frame width only works if there are two lenses hovering the bridge-width apart in front of your face.

*I can do that because of the math symbols on my glasses, FYI.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 7 October 2011 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

Oh Jesus you asked for the actual width not the frame number. Sorry! I'll have to check when I get home but they are pretty wide. I've got a fat face and they look big on me.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 7 October 2011 18:29 (thirteen years ago)

jenny, get those glasses!

tehresa, Friday, 7 October 2011 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

justine, the frames are about ~136.5 mm wide. I measured them with the ruler on the spine of the most recent Ikea catalog so that is just an estimate.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Saturday, 8 October 2011 00:22 (thirteen years ago)

cool, that's good to know - i need frames that are no more than 130mm wide.

just1n3, Saturday, 8 October 2011 02:20 (thirteen years ago)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 8 October 2011 19:00 (thirteen years ago)

First of all, hello Coastal. I don't know if I'm being targeted specifically because I'm logged into Facebook and gmail right now, or if Coastal just went apeshit with their banner ad budget. Either way, gives me another place to look around.

I can't decide on what kind of frames, if any, I should get. My current go-to glasses for public display are rimless, but the more I look at it, they make me seem like I'm wearing a metal nasal strip all evening.

http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/tt203/pplains/11-10.jpg

I don't want to go too thin on the height or I'll look like I should be wearing a skinny tie and suspenders, but I don't want to go too tall either.

Honestly, I don't mind the look SM is rocking here. However, those are the same kind of glasses worn by George Bush Sr., Jim Wright and the BTK Killer.

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 14 October 2011 21:53 (thirteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

OMFG I got my glasses back from 39dollarglasses.com, the ones I sent to be relensed, and they TOTALLY FUCKED THEM UP. They melted the holy fuck out of the frames, fucked up the metal inlays, bent them so that they are convex (so bent away from my face at the nose piece) and to top it all off... put the wrong prescription in them! I am like MADE OF RAGE right now. And their offices are closed, which means I get to let this rage simmer overnight and reduce to a thick concentrate for the delightful phone call I get to make tomorrow morning.

I'm getting somewarbyparker frames in the mail to try on this week, too. The last picture is from there, but I'm afraid that they're too angular for my face.

I really wish warbyparker had smaller frames–I look really silly in larger frames, IMO.

Ex post–thanks Jenny. I had to roll my eyes and smirk in order to take a picture that didn't look like a mug shot.

Much as opinions might be varied, they're really helpful. thanks!

JuliaA, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:58 (thirteen years ago)

2 or 4, def NOT 1

just1n3, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:08 (thirteen years ago)

#4, but I think eye position might make some of the others look different than they would normally

mh, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:15 (thirteen years ago)

IMO, #1's frames are too thin, and the bridge in #3 is too thick. I'm more into slightly squared than curved, so the winner is 4!

I'm opinionated because I've probably ordered 4-5 variations on the black frames I finally found A Happy Place with, haha!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:04 (thirteen years ago)

i am srsly thinking about lasering eyes before summer

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:04 (thirteen years ago)

why is it that everyone doesn't get their eyes lasered?

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:05 (thirteen years ago)

doesn't work if you're long-sighted, old or young iirc

caek, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:15 (thirteen years ago)

I'd bought several pairs of glasses in stores prior to shopping online, so I stuck to designs I knew would suit me, in lengths that matched my current glasses :) I have ordered a few misses, but I have rarely paid more than $30 a pair online, so I can afford 2-3 misses for every win, considering in-store always cost me $150+.. (my dog chewed my expensive glasses just as easily as he could chew a cheap pair!)

I don't want eye surgery, well maybe I do, but I would still wear glasses because I have mega dark circles under my eyes and the glasses are a perfect fix for that!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:15 (thirteen years ago)

Reasons I don't contemplate lasik:

1. Expensive
2. Not covered by insurance
3. Doesn't treat astigmatism, which I have in both eyes

It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:24 (thirteen years ago)

iirc it only lasts a few years?

just1n3, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)

xp I thought it lasted longer. Laurel's #1 is my reason. Also, fear they'd screw it up.

http://mediacdn.zennioptical.com/catalog/product/cache/1/thumbnail/255x102/3b61aaa59667ba46a41804bac5f380ed/2/2/2217-15_2011-8-12_.jpg

These are a bit like 3, and a lot like my current frames, but I like these too.

xp Robyn, I'm paying obsessive detail to measurements, but I'm new to all of this. I'm getting some frames in the mail in a couple of days to try on, but I hate trying on frames–I don't have contacts, so it's not like I can see them very well when I try them on in person! So I'll take pictures and see what I think.

I wish my vision were better so they would be cheaper, but $60-130 is worlds better than the $400 I paid for my last pair.

JuliaA, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:26 (thirteen years ago)

yah i have about a dozen pairs now, of which i really only wear 2 pairs on the reg, but the total cost was maybe a 150? the last irl pair i bought - even with a heavy discount bc my mum works for an optometrist - were a couple hundred.

just1n3, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:29 (thirteen years ago)

#4

I have a question. Do any of you get bothered by the mechanics of wearing glasses? I mean, I love mine and the way I look in glasses in general but rarely wear them because I hate when they slide down my nose, or get spots on the lenses, or fog up, or when I can't lay on my side while watching tv etc. I just find wearing them annoying and find I reach for my contacts nearly every day as a result.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:32 (thirteen years ago)

I guess wearing them more often is the only way to get over it. I also hate having to switch between reg and RX sunglasses when going in and outdoors.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:32 (thirteen years ago)

I hate the mechanics of wearing contacts even more

bob loblaw people (dayo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't had glasses I was willing to wear outside my house in about two months, and I tell you, I'm missing the mechanics of glasses more. My eyes need a break! Also, glasses are protection from wind (esp on bike) that dries out my eyes, and protection from hair or dust or specs of dirt getting into them.

Also they are "stick on face, leave house" instead of "go to bathroom, wash hands, open container, rinse/rub lenses, put finger on eyeball, reverse all steps."

It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

Hmmm. Yeah I'm pretty careless with my contacts. I have dalies but sometimes sleep in them if I foget to take them out. I can also put them in/take them out without looking in the mirror so it's pretty simple. I guess I just tolerate them well? That said, at one point I did wear them so much that my eyes grew blood vessels where they're not supposed to but, uh, I think that's cleared up now.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

i've had specs since i was 13 so i'm just used to all that stuff - REALLY wanted contacts when i was younger, but tbh i'm like lexy and have huge dark circles which glasses hide well.

just1n3, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah. Circles are my major face hate and one of the best things about wearing glasses when I choose to do so is that they're a lot less noticeable.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

i like glasses because they are a badge of high intellect

caek, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

:)

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

i have been getting sick of the mechanics of glasses also i am lol vain so i am thinking of switching to contacts, but i am scared. i don't know if i can touch my eyeballs every day.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:50 (thirteen years ago)

Oh you get used to it. Plus you don't actually touch your eye - just the lenses do!

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

eeeeee okay maybe

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

in all seriousness, i am a guy and i have about 15 hairs left, so they are my only option if i want to accessorize my head (which i do by the way).

caek, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:53 (thirteen years ago)

I want to wear my glasses! I just wish there was a way to guarantee they'd never fog up or slide down my nose or get dirty. :/

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

yeah the accessorizing the head thing is a thing. years ago a woman i knew commented that she always had to choose between glasses and bold earrings. at the time i didn't wear glasses, but now that remark haunts me as i frequently wear glasses + earrings. am i over-accessorizing my head?

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

You are probably not but that is a thing for me. I almost never wear earrings when I wear my glasses. I have a small head/features and think glasses and big earrings are overwhelming on me. I've seen people do it and pull it off really well but I'm not comfortable with it myself.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

If I do wear earrings and glasses together they're nearly always small posts.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:56 (thirteen years ago)

if someone wants to buy me lasik i am all about it. i never figured out how to wear glasses and i am always dropping them on the floor and stepping on them and stuff. sorry, that seems counter to the spirit of the thread!

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

I had a lengthy discussion with a friend about the semiotics of eyeglass adjusting

bob loblaw people (dayo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

the one fingered push at the bridge of the glasses = nerd

however, adjusting them by grasping one or the intersections between arm and glass part is okay

pinky in or out may also say something

bob loblaw people (dayo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:03 (thirteen years ago)

the one fingered push at the bridge of the glasses = nerd

i do this about every five seconds.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

I do too, I didn't realize I was a nerd until my friend pointed it out to me

bob loblaw people (dayo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

Re dailies: I have to have torics, and they don't com in dailies (afaik), and they are more expensive than reg lenses so it's kinda a thing that I have to take care of pretty carefully.

Re glasses: One way not to break them or whatever is to have REALLY HORRIBLE VISION! That way you can never take your glasses off unless you want to be struck by a city bus while crossing an intersection. Which doesn't happen all that often so for the most part my glasses never leave my face.

It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:11 (thirteen years ago)

dan have you seen the remake of g w the dragon tatoo remake yet? i feel like you could write a senior thesis on what daniel craig does with his specs in that

caek, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, i can see that. when i first got glasses i barely needed them, but my eyesight has gotten worse, and part of me just won't accept that i should probably leave them on all day. i'm one of those that takes them off when i'm out to dinner or whatever.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:14 (thirteen years ago)

xp

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:14 (thirteen years ago)

no caek but your description is the first compelling reason I've seen to go see it

bob loblaw people (dayo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:16 (thirteen years ago)

I mentioned upthread that I wore contacts 99% of my waking hours for 15 years, and now I think I haven't worn contacts in a couple months, and then only for a couple days? Not sure what is up with that. Kind of thinking about getting a second pair of glasses and/or prescription sunglasses now?

Laurel, I am pretty sure my disposables are torics, but they're the two week variety, so you are probably right.

caek's point re: Craig's character in TGWTDT is way relevant. I actually tried doing that "hang from one ear when not needing glasses" bit a few times in the days following viewing the movie, but I can't remember if he was doing it to read or what?

mh, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:16 (thirteen years ago)

i'm one of those that takes them off when i'm out to dinner or whatever.

The thought of even trying to do this is making me lol. Without glasses I'd probably eat the tablecloth and wipe my mouth on someone's tie.

It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:23 (thirteen years ago)

I took my glasses off while exercising with coworkers a couple weeks ago and I couldn't tell if someone that I could see standing in the next room through the window on the door was facing toward us or away. It kept creeping me out so I had to ask someone if there was a guy watching us.

mh, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

dayo the other compelling reason is that "orinoco flow" is on the soundtrack

caek, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:00 (thirteen years ago)

it took me a while to realise that i absolutely could not pull off dangly/bold earrings with glasses. i'm so used to wearing my glasses - i only take them off to sleep - that i don't even think about it.

just1n3, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)

IMO if you have to push your glasses up all the time, they don't fit you or you should stop into an optician and have them adjusted.

horseshoe, I wear glasses and giant hoop earrings every day and if that is wrong, I don't want to be right. I will skip earrings if I wear a necklace, though.

I have two pairs (well, three but I don't like one of them) of acetate frames now - tortoise shell and clear cat eyes. They are both pretty big, so I sort of want something a little more delicate, black, wire-framed. I like these, but Jesse hates them - http://www.zennioptical.com/?q=597521 . And I was thinking about these, but they might be a little boring - http://www.zennioptical.com/?q=593521.

gonna give her the old fuquay-varina (Jenny), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:17 (thirteen years ago)

lol hoops are the only non-post earrings I'll wear with glasses!

I have a lot of big crazy earring though that I really love that aren't hoops. Their more complicated and the ones I avoid with glasses.

It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

lol i was gonna say - those first ones are exactly the style my mum would wear, and i think jenny is significantly cooler than my mum

JuliaA, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

Jenny, having ordered a few wire framed Zenni glasses like that, I've a hunch that 464921 will be very, very thin and even kind of flexible. I was a bit disappointed when I received my own wire ones because the were so light and IMO not very attractive. My two cents!

Good to know!

I think I will probably go to stores and try on some styles and get a better idea of what I might like before I buy anything. I just don't feel confident about any of those glasses.

the glasses i ordered online last week arrived and they are good! they were essentially free but i paid for coatings and shipping, so $30. i think i need to get them adjusted a little or adjust myself - they're on a little crooked in this photo - kind of the same as my other glasses but black and not as wide/big.

Just came in on Friday, are surprisingly heavy to my face which hasn't worn glasses regularly since late last fall. I had the lady adjust the fit until they felt "balanced", which is in fact crooked by appearances, so they might need a little more adjusting.

the only thing with these glasses is i'm quite sure no one's going to notice the difference btwn these and my other glasses, except maybe one or two friends - not a very dramatic glasses change-up! but that's okay; i'm still getting used to always wearing glasses anyway. and it's good to have a second pair!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 23 January 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

just1n3, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

This, yes. Laurel I love that those are 'taller' than a typical black frame pair - I always feel like no one can see my eyes in my preferred style! (Which gives me freedom to put on drag queen levels of eyeliner & mascara..not complaining.)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

They are "taller" but they also fall down my nose every 5 mins so that kind of negates the extra height from the top.

cosign - looks great julia!

i've tried warby parker frames but didn't end up ordering them - they are nice but did not suit me.

the band across the nose is wide and heavy looking in all their frames (because they are all plastic so to be sturdy enough i suppose it has to be that way). if that look doesn't work for your face (i know it's in fashion right now but i still can't get over how unsuited it is to my face).. you're out of luck. i worried that they are so masculine style, they made me look a little too androgynous! if i had longer hair/more obvious makeup it would be a better look

Purple and Love - you're good! I shied away from the kind without rims at the bottoms because I like to cover my eye bags but I got another free CC pair last year that are the same (I'm actually wearing them now) so I'm optimistic.

I also ordered these, which are the sunglasses I currently have in red (sometimes with the hair I feel like I am a bit overloaded with red..) I ordered these from Zenni because (a) I really like the red pair's shape/fit and (b) CC charges an extra $60(!!) for sunglass tint. It's probably higher quality or whatever but the Zenni ones came to $50 without any coupon at all, tint included.

Don't tell Jesse because he'll start hounding me about it, but sometimes I think about putting up an anonymouse FB profile just to stay in the loop. But FB has such a creepy "people you may know" algorithm that I'm afraid it will take like a week before the same high school creepers and righteously estranged family members start e-pawing at my door.

I only ever shared stuff w/ Jeff via Reader but we did it a lot. G+ is a poor substitute.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:08 (twelve years ago)

I thought about doing the same for twitter since I would like something more anonymous - if I even add a couple of the same friends, it'll just start telling everyone "Lex is over here!" :( Social media is annoying.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:27 (twelve years ago)

I just ignore estranged people and high school acquaintances, tbh. It's easy, you just push "no" if they try to befriend you and never, ever think about it again :)

I've got some very tenacious family members (details on the family problems thread if you're interested) and I'm not afraid to say no/block but I also get tired of having to constantly police my personal virtual space from folks who can't take "ignore" for an answer. This one shitheel that I was good friends with in college went total Fox News Neocon once the drugs wore off, I guess, and I unfriended him and he seriously wrote me six messages started with "Did you accidentally unfriend me? Hey!" devolving to, "I guess you can't deal with someone challenging your opinions, you bitch."

I just don't need that kind of crap in my life.

Jenny, you could set up a fb w/pseudo name, and make the privacy settings so that you can't be friended AND you can't be messaged - then you have total control. And you can set it so your friends list is only visible to your friends.

SO my free pair turned out cool, as FB people saw.. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/418223_10151065821418578_396312089_n.jpg

But the white sunglasses I ordered - I fucked up! I bought the wrong kind of lens. I paid $20 for transition lenses that tint to 60% grey, when I wanted lens (that were $5!) permanently tinted to 80%. They look SO STUPID on me when they are clear - they are these, but in white - https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/s720x720/554598_10150964684402209_621669017_n.jpg - my eyes are tiny little dots in this vast frame. Going to test them in sunlight this afternoon to see how fast/dark it becomes but then probably sending it back, for only a stupid 50% refund n a $50 pair, grr. Then like a chump I will probably order them again with the proper tint. I can't believe I managed to pair more than I needed to for a shittier product. :(

Those freebies look fantastic!

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Friday, 27 July 2012 15:30 (twelve years ago)

The freebies are great! They made up for the sadness of the other pair. Also, husband is going to order me a pair of his choosing (from a list of 5 I suggested) so I will soon forget the sunglass saga altogether.

Hey do you remember when we talked about those glasses that have maths symbols on the temples and how we were like this is cool unless you're actually a mathematician (mathsematician?) and then maybe it feels kind of silly? Well, those same people now make glasses with punctuation symbols on the temples (colon and semicolon) and YOU KNOW WHAT? I want them.

carl agatha, Monday, 10 December 2012 22:01 (twelve years ago)

Yeah! I saw those. Pretty badass EXCEPT the nature of there being two punctuation marks (or math symbols) fucks with my symmetry-needing OCD. :(

Finally got my eyes checked again. Prescription got worse. Picked out a pair of specs that I liked but wasn't wild about. They came to nearly $400 AFTER INSURANCE. What the hell? I did not buy them. Instead I came back to the office and ordered a pair of cheap glasses from Zenni. I mean, sheesh.

carl agatha, Friday, 11 January 2013 20:55 (twelve years ago)

These right here:

http://media-cache-ec5.pinterest.com/upload/19914423324250386_axWhXzuF_c.jpg

$29 with lenses and anti-reflective coating and shipping.

carl agatha, Friday, 11 January 2013 20:56 (twelve years ago)

I would have ordered some new sunglasses, too, but nothing they had was big and black enough. I'll probably get a pair of those delightful DC punctuation glasses one of these days, but I think I wanted to spend very little on glasses specifically to make a point. A point to no one, mind you, but that didn't stop me.

carl agatha, Friday, 11 January 2013 20:57 (twelve years ago)

No, good for you! I know physical stores have a lot more overhead but I am done with this $400 crap. Nearly bankrupted my poor single Mom when I was a kid. I think those glasses are very cute!

Hello. I have stupid question. Is the pupillary distance measurement just how much/little they bend the wire over your nose or does it have some actual effect on the lenses?

I ask partly because I'm wondering how expensive it is if you get it wrong and partly because I have a wide nose and, idk, just wondering if that relates to anything on the order form really

susuwatari teenage riot (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 3 May 2013 11:43 (twelve years ago)

It effects the placement/orientation of the lenses, I believe. I fucked up the PD number on a pair of glasses I ordered online and they are miserable to wear. I am pretty sure it's unrelated to the wire over your nose, since that is not always bendable, depending on your frames.

carl agatha, Friday, 3 May 2013 12:35 (twelve years ago)

ah OK. Thanks!

Hm, this all seems like the sort of thing I always get wrong without knowing quite where it went wrong. Maybe I should just stop being lazy, go into town, and spend 5 times as much. And then find out that because it's 5 months since my eye test and I just haven't got round to buying new glasses until now (when the coating is disintegrating into little opaque spots on my old pair) they aren't right anyway.

i went to the moscot shop and now i'm thinking about dropping an obscene amount of money on five pieces of wire:

http://www.moscot.com/vintage-eyewear-dov_532_1.html#lenscolor=Clear

fab fanny's had nothing in my size.

i figure if i'm going to go all in for the 2-300 dollar frames i may as well get the custom made english things, because then i can get them a mm or two bigger http://www.framesdirect.com/framesfp/Savile_Row-tekalj/r.html

i'll probably just get these though: http://www.eyewearbrands.com/designer%20glasses/polo%20ralph%20lauren/polo%20ralph%20lauren%20ph%201113m/polo%20ralph%20lauren%20ph%201113m%209001%20silver--black/.

caek, Monday, 21 October 2013 05:22 (eleven years ago)

hah sorry that you didn't find anything you like at fab fan's

last ace up my sleeve is online stuff: e.g., http://optometristattic.com/, http://optometristattic.com/7230_Optometrist_Attic.htm and http://optometristattic.com/7173_Optometrist_Attic.htm and they come in several sizes. but caveat emptor when buying online, i've been burned - not because the products were not sold as promised, but because you really don't know how they'll look on your face until you put them on your face.

shuron is a pretty big mftr of 'vintage' style frames (all new, obv) and i bet more than one store carries them. in fact, i think moscot does. other stores do, probably, and maybe more styles.

乒乓, Monday, 21 October 2013 11:10 (eleven years ago)

Both the fishingline strings on my semi-rimless glasses broke within days of each other - I superglued to get through until these show up: http://www.cvoptical.com/OurBrands/BCBG_catalog/images/BCBG_FRONTS/BCF_ADRIANA_BRO_w.jpg

Tried some bright blue Chanel frames on - too narrow, and the blue was not a good thing with my coloring, plus frames were super-spendy (kept in a locked case should have tipped me off).

xp caek did you end up getting those moscot frames? i've been looking at them myself

my problem is that i have relatively bad eyesight (-7.5 in each eye) and my optometrist advised against getting any wire rimmed glasses because the lenses would be too thick. does anyone with a similar rx have any experience with this style of eyeglasses? if i do go against the advice of my optometrist will they be uncomfortable and make my eyes bulge?

these are a few styles ive been interested in:

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Monday, 29 September 2014 03:09 (ten years ago)

I'm a -7.5 in one eye and a -9 in the other and have a pair of these:
http://shuronglasses.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/revelation-ebony_2.jpg

So only half a wire rim, and the lenses are at least 3x as thick as the rim at each side by the temples. Not as obvious with the heavy black top parts but might be pretty noticeable with thin rims all the way around. My eyes don't look terribly bulgy or anything though, but I imagine they might with bigger lenses like the top ones you posted.

Sucks having terrible vision cause all the super cheap online glasses places only go up to -6 or something before the either won't make them or charge enough extra that you aren't saving that much money over getting them locally.

joygoat, Monday, 29 September 2014 04:15 (ten years ago)

nah i tried the moscot's on in store but the frames i liked weren't available in my size (massive head)

got a pair of these in the end http://optometristattic.com/7173_Optometrist_Attic.htm

caek, Monday, 29 September 2014 14:17 (ten years ago)

yeah i'm finding that my rx is really limiting my options which wasn't really a problem for the last 10 years or so since i'd always wanted the thicker plastic frames. are thick lenses a purely cosmetic issue or are there functional issues as well?

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Monday, 29 September 2014 17:09 (ten years ago)

Even the high index 1.67 glasses would be too thicK?

, Monday, 29 September 2014 18:00 (ten years ago)

i asked if i could get "thinner lenses" (cuz i didn't do my research and didn't know to ask about high index) and the optometrist said that because i'm looking at frames that would use larger lenses, the curvature of the edges would be pronounced even with the thinner lenses

i'm probably going to go and get another opinion from another store

Sad that clear frames are becoming a trend just after I had to switch from my own pair :~(

, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:36 (ten years ago)

clear frames can be very cool. i've also seen some wood frames (that may not actually be wood) that look pretty cool

marcos, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:48 (ten years ago)

Clear frames have been a thing for a few years now, no?

I'm pretty sure I need... bifocals. Sigh.

carl agatha, Friday, 9 January 2015 18:30 (ten years ago)

marcos, Friday, 23 January 2015 16:16 (ten years ago)

I like those!

I have an eye appointment tomorrow morning and I'm super excited to pick out some new frames.

carl agatha, Friday, 23 January 2015 16:33 (ten years ago)

yea i have one in couple weeks. figure i might as well take advantage of the eye care insurance i have. i've had the same black wire frames for a while and i feel like i need somethng new. you need to change it up you know

marcos, Friday, 23 January 2015 16:39 (ten years ago)

I got these, in black - http://www.blackfin.eu/v10/blackfin/en/optical.asp?id=5PR673S54C396.

They are rounder than they look in that photo, but what really sold me was that they are super light and the arms are flexible. They are so comfortable! And I mean good looking, too, but I've never really gone the comfort glasses route and these are the best of both worlds.

about a dozen duck supporters (carl agatha), Sunday, 25 January 2015 02:46 (ten years ago)

Oh and yes, totally, bifocals. The doc had me hold a bottle of eye drops with tiny print on the label and then held lenses of the proper magnification in front of my regular glasses and it was a fucking miracle.

i just got glasses & they got scratched inside the case in less than 12 fucking hours. can I get them exchanged?

welltris (crüt), Friday, 18 September 2015 11:44 (nine years ago)

anything else would be terrible customer/warranty policy service imo

niels, Friday, 18 September 2015 11:48 (nine years ago)

they're from lenscrafters :(

welltris (crüt), Friday, 18 September 2015 12:03 (nine years ago)

I take it they're not very good on service? My glasses broke bcz I was partying pretty wild with them, had them fixed on warranty by my optician - probably was some fault in construction that made them break so easy, still thought it v good service, no questions were asked.

niels, Friday, 18 September 2015 12:11 (nine years ago)

how bad is the scratch? they're poor-quality lenses if they got scratched in the case (don't most lenses come with an anti-scratch coating type of thing??). if it's a pretty minor scratch you'll probably find you won't notice it while wearing.

if you have a simple prescription and lenscrafters won't give you a replacement, buy online - i've been wearing various pairs of glasses i bought online for the last 7 years and they're totally fine (just make sure you get the PD number with your prescription).

just1n3, Friday, 18 September 2015 13:23 (nine years ago)

it's a small scratch but it's right in front of my eye and it's very noticeable when i move my eyes or my head.

welltris (crüt), Friday, 18 September 2015 15:00 (nine years ago)

posted on men's style thread already but last week i got new frames (the grayish-brown ones in the photo, not the black ones in the back) and i'm digging them, huge improvement from the shitty black wires i've been wearing forever

ils thread for general menswear and men's clothing ish

marcos, Friday, 18 September 2015 16:07 (nine years ago)

I haven't used lenscrafters in years but I once sat on a pair of glasses and they replaced them.

A long shot but does anyone have any leads on what specs Chris Dercon wears here? They're not quite the trad round like the Oliver Peoples Gregory Peck nor the ones where the arm comes in the middle of the perfect round, it's somewhere in between.
