I always think "oh no, I'm so not bothered about style and ~brands~ and things~!!!" but then someone will point out that I am a complete sucker for anything with a Liberty print on it.
And there was a bit of a hole in my life since Liberty stopped really doing stuff with actual Liberty Prints on it, to concentrate on boring haute couture.
And then I discovered Seasalt in Cornwall! Which is kind of a simpler take on the Liberty aesthetic of bold prints, mixed with bright nautical colours and "British Seaside" vibe. And makes you look like a complete Cornish hippie headed for your pottery, which is just about right.
Oh, and I seem to wear lots of Orvis tweed, but that is due to the fact that my Mum will never stop giving it to me. When I get my first paycheck from my new job, I'm going to get some Horwood and Shaw tweed tailored for me, which seems better quality.

haha i'm glad you added 'in a thrift store' because most of the brands i like i've found in thrift stores or buy on sale.
my style is a mish-mash of stuff and many of my currently in-circulation items are by local designers. these days i generally go for clean lines in either dark colours or bright patterns and i'm a fan of subtle textures.
so, as far as brands (vs higher-end designers) go re: the above qualities:Banana RepublicClub MonacoZara, only sometimesH&M line that is more adult/'organic' - i'm wearing one of their off-white linen hoodies today w skinny-straight-leg Uniqlo jeans
sadly, i've found that Uniqlo no longer suits my body, which is errgh bc i'm happier with my bod now than i was two years ago when their stuff fit me better! :/ i am still on a quest for jeans. am going to the big jeans jeans jeans store here in the next day or two to try on all manner of brands.

I inherited about half a dozen Liberty print ties when my father moved to Silicon Valley and stopped wearing suits to work. They are the most gorgeous things I've ever seen in my life. They're 60s vintage, so they're skinny tie style, as well. So lovely.

Wait is this stuff we actually own or things we would buy if we spent money on clothes. There are brands/designers I love but mostly I hate spending a lot of money on clothes so I generally buy really simple inexpensive things (from places like old navy, target, gap, H&M) like plain t shirts and jeans and then accessorize with great shoes and jewelry. I am slowly introducing non-plain things into my wardrobe but it's newish endeavor. I would like to learn to be better at thrifting but I don't have a lot of patience for it. I wish I had a buddy to go with. That would be good.

I actually own all that stuff. If I made an aspirational list it would have a lot more Tahari on it, but since I can only wear petites and certain dress shapes, that's not enormously likely.

I own the high-end stuff mentioned upthread but generally don't even consider buying anything unless there's a discount of about 70%. This means i end up with lots of slightly strange things nobody else really wants, but that suits me.

My style is boring business wear during the week and complete disaster after work (we're talking draw string pants and tees that are beat to shit from working around the house/garden).
Boring business brands that find their way in to my wardrobe frequently are the Kleins (Anne and Calvin), Banana Republic, J. Crew for suiting and pretty much the same lineup for boring business dresses. Work shoes are all over the map, but at home I am far to frequently in Naots, an Israeli "comfort shoe" brand that feel great but my husband LOATHES. To offset the Naots he has bought me two pairs of classic Louboutins (pumps and boots), which I wear on the rare fancy occasions.
Husband is way more styley than I--he loves Epaulet for shirts and pants and Alden for shoes--and recently bought me this great pleated coral skirt that I think Laurel would love! I think I may just turn over all of my wardrobe-ing to him, actually.

― how did I get here? why am I in the whiskey aisle? this is all so (Laurel), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah the Naots are mostly pretty terrible looking, but I have bad feet and a bad back, give a girl a break!
The pleats are what made me think of you! The fabric is actually kind of substantial, I don't really know how to describe it, but it holds the pleats really well despite sitting-upon.

lamp - i can't wear apc, band of outsiders, cdg, rag+bone
even if i buy XL, everything from those brands is too tapered and skinny. those are popular brands w/ skinny dudes and asians because they look nice on smaller people but if you're tall and broad-shouldered and long-limbed SUPER-MUSCULAR like me (i also have long arms) they are always too tight and short.
i do have one nice XL apc dress shirt that i got for $50 at a barney's sale but i can't button the neck and the sleeves only go about 3" from my wrists, so if i wear it to work i wear a t-shirt underneath and i always roll up the sleeves.

sorry about the ann taylor thing quincie! if i could go in there and get a work-appropriate skirt or jacket i probably would, because it is *so difficult* to find basics without a lot of unnecessary detail. their particular cuts never fit me right though
i usually stick to apc, j crew (perfect tees, shorts.. sometimes a cardigan or jacket but the quality has gone down a lot imo). theory, some elie tahari for work (the simple styles only, nothing with a lot of detail on it). also like some things from isabel marant etoile and gerard darel depending on the style and fit. rag and bone chinos, current/elliott jeans are the best
girl by band of outsiders is nice, would buy if/when i find something i'd wear a lot + at a sale price i could sort of afford. same for vanessa bruno/vanessa bruno athe, chie mihara and sigerson morrison shoes, hope (stockholm), paul and joe

thinking, even
i have def overspent sometimes! but i rarely/never pay full retail - a lot of things i have bought off ebay at super low prices. there are a handful of sellers who list new sale stock from department stores (bloomingdales for instance). i always wear the same size in a couple of labels and do a saved search if there is a certain kind of thing i want. it'll show up eventually. my favorite theory blazer cost about $50 new with tags for instance. got the rag & bone chinos at barney's co-op on an end of season sale, they were the same price as gap by then. the cost is more in the time it takes me to find something i like; i finally bought a short trench for spring, it took lots and lots and lots of searching to find the perfect convergence of label + simple style + acceptable color + relatively low price. it was a pain, but i guess i won't have to bother again for like 10 years.
i admit to buying a couple of $100 tees from apc, though i have worn them constantly & they are still in perfect shape
on the other hand i don't have any expensive handbags or fine jewelry. i like jerome dreyfuss and vanessa bruno, but i'm not willing to spend the money, and my jewelry is almost all vintage that i got as gifts from friends/family.

to summarize
1) buy expensive shit because it's well made, not because it's stylie (or buy cheap stuff that lasts a long time, like AA or ll bean)
2) buy shit that looks good on toddlers, kids, teens, adults, old folks
3) don't buy anything on sale you wouldn't buy at full price or that you wouldn't wear daily
4) tell a tight color story
this advice is from a female friend of mine who does brand consulting for gap, j crew, etc, though i admit it's harder for girls to follow this advice
― the late great, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 14:50 (thirteen years ago)
i think thats kinda bogus. shop to give yourself pleasure in the things you wear and the way you look. buy something to wear once, buy stylish things or garish things or something half as a joke, because it would make someone smile. if i get tired of something i can resell it or donate it or give it to a friend or leave it in a drawer until its cool again. never think of clothes as an investment unless you are good at clothes and even then, they probably arent.

Paris Hilton never wears an outfit twice.
The 29-year-old socialite - who has fronted advertising campaigns for the likes of Christian Dior, Marciano and Tommy Hilfiger - says that she gives most of her clothes away after wearing them once.
She explained: "I never wear an outfit more than once unless it's like a really cool pair of jeans or a leather jacket."
And the blonde beauty admitted that she has a lot of unworn clothes in her wardrobe.
She said: "I still have so many clothes in my closets that still have the labels on. I see them so often I think I've worn them but then I realise I haven't. So I either give them to my friends or donate them to a charity so they can auction them off."
However the heiress revealed that she can't always donate her clothes to her friends as they don't always fit.
She told Heat magazine: "I'm quite lucky I have small breasts and that means I can wear most clothes. Some of my friends have bigger breasts but I can wear pretty much what I like. It's a real shame though because it means I can't pass my clothes on to them, because they'll be too small around the bust."
pretty sure my brasts are bigger than lamp's

first ones not such a bad look really
im trying to think about why i find that kind of swagblog.tumblr.com advice really wrongheaded, something about the attempt to rationalize pleasure i guess, feels dehumanizing. i mean obv im resorting to blandly affirmative truisms ('just be yourself!') to describe any kind of counterphilosophy so idk

For some people, wardrobe acquisitions are about getting to a place where you are "done," or, like, have certain bases covered, as quickly/efficiently/satisfyingly as possible? I get this but it doesn't seem like very much fun? I guess clothes don't have to be fun. But they are to me!
xp haha exactly

― how did I get here? why am I in the whiskey aisle? this is all so (Laurel), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 19:05 (thirteen years ago)
there is definitely one weird trick that helps you be rational about clothes - tell a color story
― dayo, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 19:06 (thirteen years ago)
a TIGHT color story
― two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 19:08 (thirteen years ago)
elmo there is some stuff that looks good no matter how old you are, ie a clean black polo shirt, a pair of basic jeans, and converse. that looks equally good on a five year and a fifty year old.
there is some stuff that would look silly on adults but not kids, like bright red corduroy overalls, and some stuff that would look silly on kids, like skinny jeans w/ a striped v-neck tee
i say go for the first instead of the second
― the late great, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 19:10 (thirteen years ago)
I'm not gonna lie, if I had infinite money I would probably buy a lot of cool clothes to wear. since I don't and there are approx. 1 million things that require my money, I just buy functional long-lasting things in solid colors, usually

'color story' just puzzles because idk what it narrative about a color palette. i can understand that concept in terms of a runway show where there is a progression or whatever, i know it's just design jargon but
― zubaz fupa (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 19:12 (thirteen years ago)
A color story is a palette of colors used in a line or for visual merchandising in retail stores. Designers use color stories to connect and idenify each piece with a certain season and line. Retail stores often use color stories for organization and visual appeal in their companys store. An example would be if a designers line was safari inspired the color story would be dark green, tan, brown and mustard. Those colors tell a story= safari!!
― I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

it's just a way of saying "palette" while also acknowledging that certain colors set up certain moods and say things about you
navy = i am sober and professionalpink = i am feminine (and like attention if its bright pink)
etc
― the late great, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 19:16 (thirteen years ago)

if you wore a red and yellow top with vertical stripes i bet at least one person you know would think about a hot dog or possibly a hot dog on a stick
― the late great, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 19:17 (thirteen years ago)
elmo there is some stuff that looks good no matter how old you are, ie a clean black polo shirt, a pair of basic jeans, and converse
you still have to adjust for fit/proportion. i mean i know you said 'neither too slim nor to loose' or w/e but what constitutes 'too slim' is going to change over time a fair bit
its hard to universalize
― Lamp, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

clothes that suit every age demographic are generally dubbed 'classics' and are usually available at every price point, and there is (should be) a place for some of them in every wardrobe imho. it just seems odd for me to consider, as an 30 year old, whether a shirt would look good on a teen AND an old fart. why? if you're a teen with a slammin' body, go ahead and rock that neon low-cut mini-dress, because you can get away with it! if you are an old fart, dress in wizard robes, because you've earned it!!
― zubaz fupa (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)
I put on my mustard safari wizard robe and mustard safari hat
― dayo, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

if it seems odd to you that's fine, don't follow my good advice, tell a loose color story and wear a bathrobe to work and MAKE IT WORK

all-stars for all time imo
I agree that they look good on anyone toddlers to old farts but my mom has, upon seeing me wearing mine, asked me on more than one occasion when I'm going to start wearing adult shoes. She was a buyer in a former life and has pretty old school ideas on what's proper and classic etc.
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Thursday, 26 April 2012 12:49 (thirteen years ago)
Converse was my first shoe brand that I can remember having. I was always busting my mom about wanting some "hi tops" presumably because breakdancers wore them or something, idk. But we were in a Ben Franklin near my grandma's house in Wisconsin and my mom found some chucks on sale and I got them and I was super proud. My first "cool" thing, probably.
It was the summer before third grade and we had just moved and when we got back home to maryland I started at my new school and on the first day some kid was like "Chuuuccks suuuuuck!"
― frogsclovetofu (beachville), Saturday, 28 April 2012 09:49 (thirteen years ago)
