Currently I only have the Les Paul, and the Strat (albeit a Squier... my first guitar though and it actually has a damn nice action and I love playing it). Hopefully I will gradually acquire more and more of the list (financial situations allowing...).
With this collection, there is a lot of variance in tonal and playing qualities (which I guess stems from all the different tones and feels I like to haer/play and feel are suited to particular songs), and some of this is only from hearing things... I haven't actually had my hands on everything from that list...I guess i just want a bit of everything : )
Then again... if money was no object, I'd probably have most of the guitars in the world...
I love Danny dearly, but I might actually trade him for: 1) a blue flower telecaster. Oh, they're so PRETTY. And the Telecaster does that "piece of wood" garagerock sound so perfectly. Or 2) pre-CBS Jazzmaster with the lovely floating tremolo, but then again, who wouldn't? It is the Winona Ryder of guitars, innit?

The only things I would really like to have is a Gibson with some humbuckers, perhaps something more off kilter like a 70s Explorer or Flying V, except without the heavy metal adornments, a nice electric twelve string (perhaps a Jaguar more than Ric), and either an Alembic 5 string bass with all the knobs (like Entwistle played) or one of those funky Hamer 8 string basses, that Tom Peterssen of Cheap Trick and the guy from Kings X use.
I played one of those 8 string basses quite a few years ago and thought it sounded really cool, but I was dead broke with no way to even consider getting one. It would work real well in a trio setup to beef up the sound.
Oh yeah...one of these days I would like to get a decent acoustic.

I love the Washburn ABT basses, the force 4 or the T24 Taurus would be an awfully nice addition to the collection. I'd like a real p-bass instead of the lotus, preferably the black and emerald green one that Rachel Goswell plays, it is beautiful. Otherwise, I don't have any real guitar desires.

do eastwood guitars play well? are they well-made $400-$500 guitars?
― dan, Monday, 3 August 2009 21:40 (fifteen years ago)
i am a huge fan, have been really impressed w/the samples ive played (ive been trying to get them into my store for about a year now but lol economy) to be fair, there is kind a quality jump at the over $500 mark because production (generally) shifts to korean production vs. chinese, but its obv that they are working with one of the high-grade chinese factories (oh and believe me there is a massive difference from one to the next).

― arby's, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 02:05 (fourteen years ago)
I can (at least somewhat) lead you through the zone on thus stuff - dearmond pre-fender ownership was pretty much just a pickup manufacturer. I would get more detailed here but I am stuck ilxing on iPhone so I am already getting frustrated. Ask away tho, I am glad to type on this thing as long as I don't also have to come up w/ the questions.
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 02:47 (fourteen years ago)

― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 02:49 (fourteen years ago)
audition were japanese manufactured, mid-late 60s, and from what i've seen of 'em just look a lot like a lot of the other wonky cheap guitars from the time that would look at home in hound dog taylor's hands. i'm a total blank slate on that stuff though so idk if that's totally broad. i mean i don't even know what questions to ask tbh.
― arby's, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 03:01 (fourteen years ago)
ok so this is sort of leading me out of the fog, at least somewhat, in terms of brandname webbing and why i felt like i was seeing similar models with different brand names, and yah the whole dearmond/rowe industries thing was kind of a slap to own face once i actually, like, thought about it. still sort of confused as to specifics i guess. like for example, what harmony, idk, as an entity were and did exactly. they manufactured stuff for fender? weird?
see idk what questions to ask even, like i'm aware of all these bazillions of brands, but only as isolated points in a void...who the hell were eko...whats up with...see i'm not even gonna get started. my knowledge retention is a tenuous thing anyway and i'm currently plodding through development of the guitar e.g. weird reniasance vihuela de mano and four course etc blah, it's sort of weird thinking about modern guitars tbh.

― Paul McCartney, the Gary Barlow of The Beatles (snoball), Monday, 26 November 2012 18:51 (twelve years ago)
What gauge strings on that Fender? Longer scale length is generally considered "harder," all things being equal. I mean, GAS needs no excuse or apology but if what you're looking for is "easier" then a decent pro setup and/or lighter strings will change things up on your current guitar in a hurry.
― sug life (rogermexico.), Monday, 26 November 2012 18:57 (twelve years ago)
lol like I have any clue what gauge strings are on my own guitar, let alone anyone else's

― how's life, Monday, 26 November 2012 19:29 (twelve years ago)
Totally not arguing that point an it's why I kept "harder" and "easier" in quotes. One player's "stiff" is another's "precise," etc etc

the Tele:fretboard radius - 7.25"scale length - 25.5"nut width - 1.650"U shape necknot specified, but Teles usually ship with 9 gauge strings?
the Epi:fretboard radius - 12"scale length - 24.75"nut width - 1.68"C shape neckshipped with 10 gauge strings

The smaller fret radius, slightly narrow neck, and it's U shaped back go a way to explaining why barre chords are a little bit easier on the Tele.

i know what it means but the acronym GAS is the weirdest thing to catch on in internet guitar communities. and the capitalization. all these old men shouting that they don't just have gas they have GAS.
my guess is the combination of radius and nut width. 1/16" in width doesn't sound like much but it makes a big difference in feel.
― arby's, Monday, 26 November 2012 21:05 (twelve years ago)
er i guess more like 1/32" difference in this case but anyway
ok i'll bite, what is GAS

Gear Acquisition Syndrome
― Paul McCartney, the Gary Barlow of The Beatles (snoball), Monday, 26 November 2012 21:13 (twelve years ago)
the tendency to focus on buying guitar equipment over actually playing guitar. i hate the term too though.
― how's life, Monday, 26 November 2012 21:15 (twelve years ago)
Excessive GAS takes time away from playing the guitar (synth/drums/camera/etc.), but very mild GAS can help someone to focus in on what they want out of their instrument.

if that instrument is "butt trumpet"

this is a very very pretty guitar with a terrible headstock logo

if that link dies eventually, I am referring to this guitar (but made out of darker wood): https://dunableguitars.com/?page_id=998

you're not kidding - that logo is a crime

My only electric axe for a while has been a cheapo Johnson solara -- I actually like the way it plays and the tone, but I'm looking to upgrade to something similar but more gigworthy. I was looking at the Guild Bluesbird, which I'm seeing (the more recent ones, not the 70s models) in the $700-1000 range. I'm also seeing DeArmond bluesbird models closer to $500. Is it worth spending more for the Guild? The DeArmond I was looking at happens to have a cool-ass D tailpiece that's a little more distinctive than the guild, fwiw.

People seem to like the DeArmonds (though a little more love for the set-neck versions than the later bolt-on ones.) Latter-day (post-Fender) Guilds (which I assume is the Guild you mean here) are spoken well of, too, but people don’t seem to fall in love with them.
I had a big Jones on for a DeArmond M-77T, just liked the look of them. I had a chance to play an M-75 (earlier model, no Bigsby) and wasn’t 100% taken with it, although it seemed fine for the price.
If you can demo them both, do it! Looks are a huge deal in an instrument, IMO. Nothing to be ashamed of.
I hope I get a chance to play a Guild S-300 sometime... and I hope I don’t like it. Because based on looks alone I’ve been wanting one BAD. In white, pls, with the chrome stock pickups, not those hard-rock DiMarzios.

I'd think some of those Hagstrom reissues might be in your wheelhouse style wise.

I kind of regret not picking up the Paul Westerberg First Act guitar when it was released but maybe I will see it around for like <$50 somewhere. I haven't played in several years so I should sell my guitars but I guess somehow they bring me joy (thx Marie Kondo).
My dream guitar would still be a vintage Gretsch hollowbody (not picky). I still have a rickenbacker330, jazzmaster 62 reissue and this crazy magenta glittertop les paul that my dad got for me when I was 15.
― Yerac, Friday, 7 June 2019 00:59 (six years ago)
whoops jaguar not jazzmaster.
― Yerac, Friday, 7 June 2019 01:03 (six years ago)
i still want three electrics although i don't play enough or have enough space to justify them. getting an upgraded japanese jag reissue last year does mean i have one electric that really kicks ass. but i'd still love to get these:
1. a reissue jazzmaster with early specs--sunburst, gold anodized guard, 50s logo.2. a goldtop les paul with p-90s like the one clay tarver plays with chavez3. a really resonant tele with a massive maple neck, probably white blonde

I got the jetglo rickenbacker primarily because it was the a color choice for Peter Buck, Carrie Brownstein and Paul Weller. I can't remember why I got a white jaguar. I think maybe because I thought I needed a more elegant color. I got the jaguar over the jazzmaster because short arms. The les paul color is so embarrassing but that guitar is so comfy to play. I also always wanted a Danelectro seafoam guitar but mostly just because of the aesthetics.

At some point I'm going to buy an EGC500. Also I'd like a Moog guitar but I wouldn't spend for it.

I'd really like a Dean Razorback, preferrably with lightning bolts on it, although an explosion would do. But until then, I will get by with my G&L ASAT. Can't fuck with teles, imo. Kinda want something with P90s in it too. I have a G&L Fallout, but I never really got along with the body shape.
As far as basses go, I'm more inclined toward an opposite aesthetic. Interested in trying out an Epiphone Jack Casady or Guild Starfire.
― ☮ (peace, man), Friday, 7 June 2019 11:14 (six years ago)
Could put some humbucker-shaped P90s in the imaginary Razorback, I guess.
― ☮ (peace, man), Friday, 7 June 2019 11:16 (six years ago)
I have an Epiphone '56 Goldtop reissue with Fralin noise-cancelling P-90s, sounds great.

I bought an unfinished body and neck for a Jazzblaster like Lee Ranaldo but I can't decide what color to have it painted Olympic white + a fancy pants tortoiseshell guard is a leading option:https://spitfiretortoiseshellpickguards.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/img_3757.jpg?w=2000&h=1334but with shiny humbuckers instead of the ivory JM pickups
or charcoal frost, with either fancy tortoiseshell or mint:https://spitfiretortoiseshellpickguards.files.wordpress.com/2018/07/nick-bock-copy.jpg

Got my dream guitar yesterday. You’ll laugh at how modest a dream it was - I’ve wanted a mid 80s Ibanez Roadstar for years ever since learning that my all time favorite guitar sound, that on Meat Puppets’ Up On The Sun, was not Curt Kirkwood’s characteristic Gibson LP but rather a Roadstar he’d just gotten. Been in the twin cities for over a week bc my mom is in the hospital and the guitar center in maple grove had a used one for $350 (cream color) and I drove her car out there and played it and loved it and bought it. It’s not perfect (e string likes to slip off the feet edge a bit) but it’s perfect. (Note: the other part of the up on the sun gtr recipe per Curt K was one of those Tom Scholz Rockman thingies - do they make some kind of clone of that these days?)

literally a "dream guitar" - last night i dreamed that i found online a vintage blue semihollowbody guitar, but with a headstock that was twice as long as a normal headstock with a hinge in the middle; i.e. the top half of the headstock could fold up. i guess the idea was then you could clip sheet music to this part? for some reason this made the guitar EXTREMELY desirable to me. i don't even read sheet music.

One you can file under cool as he11 but way too much money to ever consider actually purchasing is that Collings Julian Lage signature electric guitar.
