inspired by the frankly awesome tracklisting of the new U2 album, "there is no line on the horizon":
01 No Line on the Horizon02 Magnificent03 Moment of Surrender04 Unknown Caller05 I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight06 Get on Your Boots07 Stand Up Comedy08 Fez - Being Born09 White as Snow10 Breathe11 Cedars of Lebanon
it would be awesome if various music people on this board would each claim one of these song titles, then write and record a song with that title, then put a link to it on this board. the songs don't have to sound like U2 or have anything to do with U2 at all. the u2 album comes out march 3, if we could get this all done before then, it would be awesome. anyone interested?

I couldn't care less about u2 but this might be fun.hum...which one to pick... I'll go with "crazy".can there be several versions of each track or does it have to be one and only one of each ?
― AleXTC, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:12 (sixteen years ago)
ideally the later, unless more than 11 people want to contribute, in which case we'll figure something out
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 19 January 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)
fucking great idea
― Mr. Que, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)
i would like to use "stand up comedy" as i have a lot to say on the subject but will give it up if it encourages more people to contribute
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 19 January 2009 16:17 (sixteen years ago)
you should have a breakdown in the middle of the song where you do actual stand up comedy
― Mr. Que, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:20 (sixteen years ago)
fine. I already have some ideas rolling... if I don't go for some drinks after work or get too lazy once at home, I'll start it tonight !
― AleXTC, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:20 (sixteen years ago)
I'll go crazy if i don't go crazy tonight practically writes itself
ahah, well you could always keep an option on it until someone else REALLY wants to do it.
― AleXTC, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:22 (sixteen years ago)
basically all of these titles conjure up country songs in my head
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 19 January 2009 16:22 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, "crazy" is pretty evocative... but I'll try to add some... craziness !
― AleXTC, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:23 (sixteen years ago)
I'll take "Fez - Being Born"

ok, I've made the basic demo for "crazy" last night. now I just have to re-record everything properly (I was a bit too drunk to make decent takes...).It should be ready far before the dead line.now i'm pretty curious to hear what U2's track is like... it was a trick to make us listen to their new album !
― AleXTC, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 09:53 (sixteen years ago)
(xpost) Jordan, are you claiming "Get On Your Boots", because I thought I already called dibs on that?

cedars of lebanon has to be on the slower end of mid-tempo and has to reference palestine, israel, and the 1972 olympiad.

i found a rolling stone article with 'previews' of these songs, but i wouldn't want to influence anyone.
except some of them are pretty funny:
"No Line on the Horizon"The title track's relentless groove began as a group improvisation. "It's very raw and very to the point," says the Edge. "It's like rock & roll 2009."
― Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 January 2009 20:29 (sixteen years ago)
"Magnificent""Only love can leave such a mark," Bono roars on what sounds like an instant U2 anthem. Will.i.am has already done what Bono calls "the most extraordinary" remix of the tune.
― Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 January 2009 20:30 (sixteen years ago)
"The Most Extraordinary Remix" would be a good name for a song
i listened to "get on your boots"; it actually wasn't that bad, though i don't know what i was expecting given that i haven't actively listened to a u2 album since zooropa

― 6335, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 20:33 (sixteen years ago)
pretty hard to top:
"Unknown Caller"This midtempo track could have fit on All That You Can't Leave Behind. "The idea is that the narrator is in an altered state, and his phone starts talking to him," says the Edge.
― Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 January 2009 20:35 (sixteen years ago)

― congratulations (n/a), Saturday, 24 January 2009 13:58 (sixteen years ago)
I'm doing RPM this February, so I'm looking to get this track wrapped up by the end of January. I wonder if any other people on this thread are in the same situation? But of course I can hold on until the beginning of March before I post a download link.
― snoball, Saturday, 24 January 2009 16:12 (sixteen years ago)
yeah mine's done
― gr8080, Sunday, 25 January 2009 00:00 (sixteen years ago)
can we just email them to n/a and then he can post when he has all of them?
ahah, great spoken words Ned !Maybe someone could make an instrumental track to play in the back as a closing/bonus track ?I have also finished my track. So the idea is to send them to n/a then ?concerning the title, "No ILX on the horizon" sounds good to me.Should we keep the same cover as u2's or "Ilx" it ?March 3 seems so far... (who will start the "No line on the horizon Vs No Ilx on the horizon" thread ?)
― AleXTC, Monday, 26 January 2009 11:25 (sixteen years ago)
I think we definitely need an "ILX"ed version of the cover. Anyone here with the necessary skills?
― snoball, Monday, 26 January 2009 11:57 (sixteen years ago)
By which I mean, I know there are people on ILX with the skills, can someone please some forward?
― snoball, Monday, 26 January 2009 11:58 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, we know there are great visual artists here... Album covers redrawn from memory in MS Paint
let's make this project an "Ilx art total extravaganza" !
― AleXTC, Monday, 26 January 2009 12:10 (sixteen years ago)
lol excellent - although the U2 cover is so bland I can't even remember what it looks like!
― snoball, Monday, 26 January 2009 12:40 (sixteen years ago)
Also, I've just noticed, March 3rd is the release date in North America. It's released on March 2nd in Europe and Feb 27th in Ireland, so maybe we should bring our official release date forward?
― snoball, Monday, 26 January 2009 12:43 (sixteen years ago)
haw i guess i can collect the tunes; again my email address is naamme at gmail dot com. if your actual name is significantly different from your ILX name, please include your ILX name in the email so i know who i've gotten tunes from so far

I won't listen to u2's album until I've listened to ours !So when are we releasing it, already ?
― AleXTC, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 10:52 (sixteen years ago)
well since we only have three tracks at the moment it's kind of a moot point

I think Edward III is.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 14:56 (sixteen years ago)
so for the release, will someone work on the cover or do we leave that out ? n/a, if you don't know/want to deal with the upload/leaking of the album and if no one here wants to, I'll ask a friend. It would be good if we could release this before the end of Feb : would everybody be ok with that ?

I might be screwed on this due to houseguests, but I have something written and can hopefully throw it together before they arrive

― snoball, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:06 (sixteen years ago)
An artist must start with a blank canvas. The less there is already, the more that can be added. And you forgot the big equal sign in the middle
― Reflex Gaffe (country matters), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:08 (sixteen years ago)

― Reflex Gaffe (country matters), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:19 (sixteen years ago)
I'd be happy to forward the songs on to edward III if you have an idea for how to get them up online in the same place
what I'd do is make a zip file containing all the songs and upload 'em to sendspace so everybody could download it. if that would be a hassle for you I don't mind taking care of it.
So, it seems everybody will be ready for the deadline.
hopefully...
nabisco sounds like he might have run into some challenges, and it's been a week since his last update. no recent word from elvis telecom either but he's just mixing so maybe not a problem.

― AleXTC, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 17:16 (sixteen years ago)
Did you guys ever come up with a title? It's fine if there isn't one, but if a specific title must appear on the cover, now is the time.

we thought about "no ilx on the horizon" but I was wondering if it wouldn't be a good idea to stick to the original title (since we kept the original song titles !).

Oh, guys, sorry for sucking on this -- I've been working on it, but like I said upthread, there have been houseguest issues all week, including a toddler sleeping in the room where I'd normally record stuff ...
We said end of the month, right? Cuz my plan was to finish it up tomorrow now that people are gone...
― nabisco, Friday, 27 February 2009 14:18 (sixteen years ago)

is there anything like muxtape left that we could use for streaming purposes? it looks like fairtilizer could be ok for track by track, but it would be nice to be able to have them stream as an "album"
even if i get all the tracks tonight or tomorrow, it's fairly unlikely i'll get this whole thing up and running before sunday at the earliest, because saturday is looking a little crazy for me at this point. if anyone is upset about this i can forward all the tracks on to someone else

omar/ned, after doing about 16 mixes I ended up sending in the original version, same one you already have
I recorded it quickly so I didn't pay attention to EQ like I should have, and now whatever I do to clean it up seems to make it worse, so I just went with the devil we know
this is the second ilx comp in a row where I get to provide final track space jamz, hootie hoo

Sorry for dragging down the quality, but per the houseguests excuse, I spent about 30 minutes tossing mine together with crappy direct-in guitars, and I get the feeling the 192 bitrate actually leaves it sounding slightly better than it otherwise might, so ... I'll stick with that, I guess?
(P.S. I am more curious than ever about Tombot's very cool and distinctive approach to reverb.)

I kinda feel bad about the cover now. I mean, if the goal is to trick megaU2 fans into downloading it, as soon as they see some lady Bono rising up from the bottom of the ocean and chasing some blue lady wearing sunglasses up a ladder they're going to realize it's not legit.

Hmm. "U2 fans" is a large population. So even if the proportion of really fucking stupid ones is the same as it is in any normal population (and you might, if you were being all zingy and ILX about it, say it'd be higher), that's still a shitload of people who might just fall for it, no matter what ;)
― Special topics: Disco, The Common Market (grimly fiendish), Sunday, 1 March 2009 22:50 (sixteen years ago)

This is not a fake U2 album, it's just a not-U2-covers album inspired by U2 song titles, with varying degrees of whimsy.

ILX should do 1 of these a year.
― Body Butter (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 17 January 2010 10:02 (fifteen years ago)
But U2 only release an album every four years! We should e-mail Bono and get him to send us all U2's unused song titles so we can write piss take parodies.
― an executive by day and a wild man by night (snoball), Sunday, 17 January 2010 10:05 (fifteen years ago)
Maybe whenever ILX Vol. 4 comes out, U2 can take our song titles and mock us instead with their own U2notILX project.
― an executive by day and a wild man by night (snoball), Sunday, 17 January 2010 10:06 (fifteen years ago)
I'm listening to "our" album right now (some friends made me a vinyl edition... might sell well on ebay !).still great !is there a major artist/band album expected in the coming months ?
― AlXTC from Paris, Sunday, 17 January 2010 10:09 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah I didn't mean just U2, like I dunno, the new album by a big act that sucks and deserves the ilx treatment. Red Hot Chili Peppers for ilx2010?
― Body Butter (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 17 January 2010 10:25 (fifteen years ago)
That's a good call. RHCP are probably the only other band/artist that ILX cares about enough to want to do this. In an interview Chad said it would be coming out October 2010. It's a bit far off but OTOH we'll have more time to prepare. And if they release another double album (the previous one had 28 tracks) then more people can get involved.
― an executive by day and a wild man by night (snoball), Sunday, 17 January 2010 10:49 (fifteen years ago)
hum. it's a bit to far to be fun.aren't there other big releases coming ?
― AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 18 January 2010 22:14 (fifteen years ago)
Big list here:http://www.metacritic.com/music/upcomingreleases.shtml
The only one that sort-of catches my eye that is going to be released soon is Goldfrapp (release scheduled for 23rd March). But there's no track listing yet. And they're not really in the same league as Bono in the "desperately needing a kick in the pants" department. But if people still want to have at U2, then "Songs of Ascent" is due for mid 2010 release. Recorded at the same time as "No Line..." just the title says that it's going to be full of ripe Bono-isms.
― an executive by day and a wild man by night (snoball), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 11:34 (fifteen years ago)
aah, too bad white stripes is only a live... interpol maybe ?there will certainly be great titles to work with !
― AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 11:46 (fifteen years ago)
interpol would be fun, everyone should just do their best ian crutis impression over a variety of backing tracks (ian crutis does super fruity swag rap; ian crutis reads poetry over steve reich's "clapping music"; ian crutis does broadway!)
― thank u 4 being a fiend (m bison), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)
ahah. sounds good ! but that would make it just a comedy project, wouldn't it ? (which somehow we managed to avoid with "no ilx").I've just looked at their titles... there's some gold to expect !

yeah I know - and even if you weren't it was pretty damn funny - am gonna have to release a song by that name at some point
thing is when listening to it I was all 'wha...who uses the horn presets on keyboards' at first, then I was 'hang on, but this is pretty hypnotic', then I was 'hey the fact that someone has used the horn preset and then offset it with groovy syncopated bass is awesome' and finally by the synth solo I was convinced someone had hit on something really valuable
so yeah, if the Wire track manages a build-up half as epic as this it'll have been worth it tbh

― double shyamalan (MaresNest), Saturday, 8 May 2010 22:15 (fifteen years ago)
hey thanks! I was pretty happy with the music; it's a little more "boring" (ie longer and fewer parts) than the songs I normally do but I feel like it's kind of a grower. I'm still not crazy about the vocals; I did the singing first and it didn't sound how I wanted it (my voice isn't low or weighty enough) so then I tried the robot vocals but it seemed kind of cheap so then I "compromised" and left both in when I probably should have just committed to one or the other.
I've probably linked this somewhere before but all the home recording stuff I do is at http://scarequotes.net.
