Sandy sez the team has the "capacity" to win 10 more games this year, and claims he couldn't get a better SS without trading Syndergaard.

oblique injury for Duda

touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 February 2015 20:59 (ten years ago)

from Chris Mosch at BP:

As it’s currently constructed, the Mets’ rotation is a crowded place. Terry Collins has six hurlers returning to camp who made starts for the team last season, plus the return of Matt Harvey. But the Mets skipper didn’t waste much time revealing how he expects his starting rotation to shake out, telling reporters on Wednesday that Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Jacob deGrom, Jonathan Niese and Bartolo Colon are his likely starting five. That leaves Dillon Gee and Rafael Montero on the outside looking in while confirming that the chances of youngsters Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz starting the year with the big-league club are extremely slim.

However, Collins made it clear that the organization won’t rush the development of their young arms at the expense of team needs; should a rotation spot at the big-league level open up due to injury or poor performance, the skipper told Marc Carig of Newsday, among others, that it’s Gee who is next in line. This comes after general manager Sandy Alderson told the media last week that neither Syndergaard nor Matz is a candidate for the Mets bullpen, indicating that neither pitcher will get the call until he truly shows he has nothing left to prove in the minors.

Adam Rubin:

The New York Mets addressed a left-handed relief void Monday, trading for Padres southpaw Alex Torres. Minor league right-hander Cory Mazzoni and a player to be named later are headed to San Diego.

The Mets again addressed that void later Monday in a trade with the Washington Nationals, acquiring left-handed reliever Jerry Blevins for outfielder Matt den Dekker.

Left-hander Sean Gilmartin, a Rule 5 pick from the Minnesota Twins, is likely to make the Opening Day roster even with the acquisition of Torres. He is not considered a lefty specialist, however.

RJ Anderson of BP on Lagares:

Every hitter is dependent to some degree on his batting average, but Lagares is reliant upon singles to an extreme extent; he's simply not going to be productive at the plate if he doesn't have a high average.

With that in mind, going year-to-year with Lagares would've been a sound play; the risk being that he wins another Gold Glove or two, posts a high average a couple more times, or employs an agent who convinces arbitrators that his client is the best defender on the planet. Ultimately, the money involved isn't enough to fret too much about it one way or another; however, it is a surprising and perhaps unnecessary investment for a franchise that, as of late, has been reluctant to spend.

<3 this guy btw

The Mets’ phenom, who spent a lot of time fishing and hunting growing up, still bears the scars of his days spent out in the hot Florida sun.

“I used to ride fawlers a whole bunch,” he says.

Fawlers?

“We would have tracks, fawlers and dirt bikes,” he says.

Ah, four-wheelers.

“We would build some pretty big jumps,” he reminisces, “The days I wasn’t playing, I would definitely ride.”

But before you have a heart attack, Fred Wilpon, know this. The kid is over fawlers.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea,” he says with a mischievous grin. “I had my fair share of getting injured.” Pulling up his pants legs, deGrom shows off the battle scars on his right knee. “I busted up my knee and had to get 20 stitches in that,” he says. “The back of my leg had to get stitches. I’m lucky I never broke anything, but I was always having to get stitches.”

Cameron on FG: The Mets haven’t played well enough that we should dramatically alter our expectations of what they’re going to do going forward, but now, .500 ball for 24 weeks gets you an 85 win finish. And while 85 wins probably doesn’t get you the Wild Card, that’s the mean forecast out of a range of expected outcomes, and it doesn’t take very many things going New York’s way before that 85 turns into 88 or 89.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 24 April 2015 04:34 (ten years ago)

not as much reason to hate Atl w/ their autumn chokes and absence of Larry.

Cubs and Mets used to not like each other at times when they were both in the east. I know they had a couple brawls back in the day. I remember Jody Davis hitting 2 HRs against Doc Gooden in Chicago and then I don't think Doc ever lost to them again.

The last time the Mets had lost 1-0 on consecutive days was Sept. 4-5, 1990, at St. Louis and Pittsburgh, STATS said. The previous team to defeat New York 1-0 on back-to-back days was the Chicago Cubs in April 1973 at Shea Stadium. Ferguson Jenkins beat Tom Seaver in the opener in a matchup of future Hall of Famers.

Nats/Expos had never won consecutive 1-0 games before.

Colon has defeated the O's while pitching for Cleveland, the White Sox, the Angels, Boston, the Yankees, Oakland and the Mets.

STATS said its research dating to 1914 shows no other pitcher who has topped the same opponent with seven different clubs. Dan Haren, David Wells and Hall of Fame spitballer Burleigh Grimes were among the seven to beat a team six ways.

deGrom is throwing all of pitches harder than he did last year. His curveball isn’t breaking quite as much as it did, he’s not using it against right-handed hitters as often, and it’s generating fewer swinging strikes overall. Hitters haven’t whiffed on his four-seam fastball as often, and they’ve already hit more home runs against that pitch this year than they did all of last year.

the increasing costive borborygmi (Dr Morbius), Friday, 19 June 2015 11:26 (ten years ago)

xp the cliche is that the biggest gap between minor league levels is from high-a to double-a, but it seems more or less true. at the lower levels you can get by on sheer talent, but at a certain point you also need to have an 'approach', i.e. a more detailed plan than just throw hard or see ball/hit ball. triple-a veterans lack the tools, but they know what they're doing, and akeel morris has never consistently faced a lineup that knew what it was doing.

players at high-a just aren't that good. in 2012 the st. lucie mets were the best team in the florida state league; three years later the regulars who have gone on to the most success are daniel muno and wilmer flores (who was really young for that level then).

despite this being morris' sixth pro year (at age 22!), he's only thrown 248 innings. he's always been hard to hit, but only last year established decent command. his highest-level experience is this year in the fsl, which is the most pitcher-friendly minor league.

his stuff -- a low-to-mid-90s fastball and a good changeup -- is good enough to baffle low minor leaguers, but he can neither blow his fastball past the highest-scoring team in the majors nor fool it with his change.

the mets needed an arm and since he was headed north anyway (he's now at double-a binghamton) maybe they were all what the hell. and they were losing that game anyway iirc. but it seems a case of throwing a dude in the deep end well before he can swim, and we'll see how he bounces back.

there might be others, but the only dude i remember recently basically jumping straight from a-ball to the majors (albeit with an offseason inbetween) is jose fernandez.

The truth of the 2015 Mets probably lies somewhere north of the 68-win pace they’ve operated at since April 24, but I don’t see holding them to the standard of their record over slightly more than a third of the current season as somehow unfair. This is the team that’s going out and playing the games that count. In a parallel universe in which all variables are delightfully controlled, nobody vital has been injured, everybody worthwhile has been inked to sub-market contracts and distant potential has translated into immediately pleasing reality, the Mets are probably kicking Atlanta ass and taking Washington names.

In this one, they’ve scored 13 runs in their past 66 innings and looked like rank amateurs for the better part of a week.

weird how they always paint it like bonilla pulled some crazy trick on the poor unsuspecting mets... like i thought they couldn't afford to pay him, so they worked out a plan where he would defer the payments and basically get the $ + standard interest later?

J.D. (PA)
Keith, Conforto continues to hit AA pitching. I'm actually in favor of getting him some ABs while Cuddyer rests up, but at the very least he should be in AAA, right? I've never understood the Mets handling of him.

Klaw (1:11 PM)
I don't understand the Mets' handling of their prospects overall. It seems like they're horribly slow to promote hitters - Dom Smith should probably be in AA, Conforto should have started in AA and be in AAA or the majors by now.

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 July 2015 21:39 (ten years ago)

dom smith didn't start hitting at all until june and still has only two homers (as a first baseman) in 70 games. and he just turned 20 last month.

conforto should have started full-season ball last summer rather than going to brooklyn, but at least they did jump him to high-a this spring. considering their struggles offensively, and cuddyer's injury, and conforto's performance in double-a, it does seem like they should be giving him a gallo-like shot. (i'm not sure that playing triple-a in a place like vegas would prepare him much for the majors)

The Mets’ opponents through the end of the season entered Monday with a combined winning percentage of .455, giving the Mets the weakest strength of schedule in the major leagues from here on out. The Nationals have the second-weakest at .470. The Cubs and Giants, whom the Mets are chasing in the NL wild-card race, both have remaining schedules above .500.

from Amazin' Avenue:

Lucas Duda was scratched from last night's lineup with a sore back. Terry Collins doesn't think it's a concern, so we'll just patiently wait for the surgery announcement.

also, measuring the all-time quality of deGrom, Harvey, Syndergaard:

Before Syndergaard's most recent start on Saturday night, when he gave up five earned runs in four innings against the Rays, all three of the starters' ERA+ were 135 or higher. To put that in perspective, only two other teams in Major League history have had three starters in their first three Major League seasons put up those numbers: The 1914 Red Sox with Rube Foster, Dutch Leonard and Erie Shore; and the 1906 NL champion Cubs, who were led by Orval Overall, Jack Pfeister and Ed Reulbach.

Change the number to a minimum ERA+ of 120 following Syndergaard's last start, and it's still a rare occurrence. The last team with three starters to post an ERA+ of 120 with three or fewer years of experience was the 2010 Athletics, which featured Brett Anderson, Trevor Cahill and Gio Gonzalez.

This Mets triumvirate of cost-controlled hurlers is also one of only four clubs to have three pitchers in their first four seasons post a walks-per-nine ratio under 2.0 -- the 1901 Pirates, '04 White Sox and '07 Senators being the others.

The presence of Verrett on the roster gives the Mets an option to skip a start for one of their young pitchers, just as they did with Matt Harvey on Sunday. According to Terry Collins, Verrett will be a key piece to the back end of the Mets' bullpen. The right-hander also adds value by offering the ability to step in for as many starts as needed if a Mets pitcher were to sustain an injury.

Matt Harvey tells reporters that he's always considered 180 IP a limit, and won't answer questions about the playoffs. Can't believe this.

Andy K, Saturday, 5 September 2015 21:13 (ten years ago)

On top of that, Harvey — pitching on six days’ rest — later made it clear he is no fan of the Mets’ new six-man rotation.

“With that much time off in-between starts, throwing once a week, I found a rhythm in the bullpen and then once I got a hitter in there and got the adrenaline going a little bit, things kind of got out of whack,” Harvey said following the Mets’ 4-3 loss to the Dodgers.

“With the six-man and the day off, it’s tough. We’re all having to deal with it. It’s not an excuse why things didn’t go well today, but I just have to do a better job of finding a way to find a rhythm through a period of extended rest like that.”

J Parker, 2012: 15.62
S Marcum, 2010: 15.58
K Medlen, 2013: 15.48
*M Harvey, 2015: 14.78*

@jazayerli
Or put it another way:

Johnson: 3284 pitches
Parker: 3155 pitches
Medlen: 3049 pitches
Marcum: 3043 pitches
Harvey: 2459 pitches

@jazayerli
If the Mets were to limit Harvey to 3000 pitches, at his current pace of pitches per inning, Harvey could throw *203* innings, not 180.

@jazayerli
I've been writing for at least 17 years now: it's not the innings, it's the pitches. Why the hell are we still talking about innings?

@jazayerli
Without even getting into the wisdom of basing decisions on a sample size of 4 pitchers, USING BORAS' OWN CRITERIA, Harvey can go 203 IP.

that is true about boras -- and i trust neither him nor the mets -- but he failed by waiting this long to publicly complain. harvey's been acting all season like he wants to pitch *more*, and while boras may have now convinced him that a great deal of money is on the line, acting earlier might have helped avoid the quitter label he's courting. and to what end? if the mets tell him to pitch, is he going to refuse?

and yeah, what jazayerli said about pitches vs. innings

According to two sources, NESN is interested in Ron Darling as Dave O'Brien's partner for Sox telecast next year.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 17:12 (nine years ago)

Collins began to question the prudence of placing Steven Matz in the Division Series rotation, especially if the southpaw does not pitch this weekend. Matz is dealing with upper-back stiffness on his right side. Collins noted that if Matz is included in the opening-round roster and then is unable to pitch and is replaced, rules stipulate that he would be ineligible for the NLCS as well.

With those insights from Collins in mind, let's now project Bartolo Colon in the NLDS rotation instead of Matz, which opens a bullpen spot for Sean Gilmartin.
