brewers should trade garza too.. they just need a whole new team at this point.
tired phrase but the dodgers will be pretty damn active at the trade deadline looking for a #3 starter.. I assume they'll do a red sox deadline deal like last year where they trade a couple of scott van slyke, justin turner and alex guerrero instead of prospects to get someone while every gm on earth will insist on seager and urias as a starting point.

The Astros got Kazmir for very little (in a trade within their division no less). Someone is going to similarly overpay for Cueto. Having said that, I think the Jays have to make this trade, it'll cost them Sanchez or Norris but we have 1.5 decent starting pitchers and the offense is built to win now.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 26 July 2015 07:29 (nine years ago)

― NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 26 July 2015 17:10 (nine years ago)
If the Jays had been leading or no worse than a game out, I would have been all for getting Cueto at some cost. They're 5.5 out, though; Cueto cannot make that up. If he pitches well, he's worth, what, two or three games the rest of the way? (Teams in the Jays' position who make these moves seem to be putting faith in those dreaded intangibles--that it'll inspire the rest of the team to make up the other three games.) Even if they got (or get) into the playoffs, I just can't see them getting very far.
I think it's a great move for KC; for us, I had my doubts.

J Stark:
The Philadelphia Phillies have told several teams interested in acquiring Cole Hamels that they'd like to get their "best" offers by Wednesday, sources told ESPN.com.
The team would then make a decision about where -- and whether -- to trade him.
The Phillies have continued to speak with a large number of teams -- a group known to include the Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros, Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox -- about Hamels.
However, sources said that in the case of about half of that group, the Phillies initiated those talks in an attempt to reopen discussion about players whom those clubs had said previously they'd be unwilling to trade.

Ken Rosenthal says the Mets pulled out of the deal when reviewing medical records because of concerns about Gomez's hip condition. And Rosenthal's report was confirmed by several other writers.

The Jays seem to have gotten Price. Maybe for Daniel Norris and Anthony Alford--who they might be giving up seems hazy.
Unless they simultaneously extend Price's contract--do players ever do that anymore heading into free agency?--I honestly think this would be a terrible move.

― Van Horn Street, Thursday, 30 July 2015 17:15 (nine years ago)
also, yeah, pretty happy the giants have been silent so far.
― Van Horn Street, Thursday, 30 July 2015 17:20 (nine years ago)
I hate to be that guy who's being a drudge in the middle of what should be an exciting moment. If this were 1992, I'd be all for it. And this will, or at least should, guarantee the second wild-card.
Is it enough to win everything? I just can't see it, not when I think about KC, St. Louis, Washington, and the Dodgers. I think the lightning-in-a-bottle they're hoping to catch isn't appreciably more likely today than it was yesterday, and the cost is significant.
(I looked at all three guys' minor league records, and I could definitely see their careers adding up to 40+ more WAR than the 2-3 we may get from Price the rest of the way.)
― clemenza, Thursday, 30 July 2015 17:22 (nine years ago)
Anyway, I just linked to the Posnanski article as it generally related to this kind of trade. I have no basis for thinking it's one of the 10 worst trades ever.
― clemenza, Thursday, 30 July 2015 17:23 (nine years ago)
I agree with you Clem, even though I wasn't very high on Norris to be honest. I think the Tulo trade was actually smart, and that they got carried away.

ppfft Toronto is a nice city.
― Van Horn Street, Thursday, 30 July 2015 17:29 (nine years ago)
The naive fan part of me wants to believe that Price has somehow indicated to Anthopoulos (are they even allowed to communicate?) that he's tired of moving around, loves the team they're building, and wants very much to re-sign. Of course, the reality is that someone will wave around enough money and he'll be gone in a blink.
― clemenza, Thursday, 30 July 2015 17:35 (nine years ago)
Part of me wishes Anthopoulos is going for Cespedes.
― Van Horn Street, Thursday, 30 July 2015 17:37 (nine years ago)
But yeah I don't see Price staying in Canada after this fall. Cubs, Dodgers, Yankees surely will be ready to give big bucks for him.
― Van Horn Street, Thursday, 30 July 2015 17:38 (nine years ago)
From a Tigers perspective I quite like this trade.

@DanielNorris18Brad Ausmus is my 2nd cousin.
― Andy K, Thursday, 30 July 2015 17:52 (nine years ago)
i don't think it's bad for the jays at all. the AL is wide open this year and they have an insane lineup. the run differential suggests that they're better than their record. they haven't made the playoffs in this century. norris looks like a solid future starter but not an ace; the other guys could be good but aren't ranked particularly high by scouts.
i doubt they can afford to keep price, but they'll have stroman coming back next year and maybe a full season from aaron sanchez. seems like a decent trade for both teams imo
― mookieproof, Thursday, 30 July 2015 18:19 (nine years ago)

Very disingenuous answer from Anthopoulos to the first question at the press conference ("What changed from Tuesday, when you said you wouldn't make this kind of move?"):
"I don't know that I said that..."
You did, very specifically--I was watching.
Guy on TV said the Jays' odds for winning everything have moved from 25-1 to 16-1. That sounds pretty much dead-on to me. So I guess it amounts to how you feel about a 16-1 shot. If they go on and win everything, obviously this would be all forgotten, like nobody cares now that they gave up Jeff Kent in the '92 trade for Cone. If they get to the ALCS, maybe ending the postseason drought will be enough and it'll be forgotten. If they win a wild-card and lose the wild-card game, it'll be a hard thing to justify. If they don't make the playoffs--and they're still in a logjam with 5-7 other teams--you get to spend the next five years pretending not to notice what the three guys you traded away are doing.
― clemenza, Thursday, 30 July 2015 19:18 (nine years ago)
