Excellent. He was awesome in '85 and '86--Rickey Henderson was better, maybe Dale Murphy, and that was it for outfielders. Years after I saw that game he was at the Skydome for autographs; I of course mentioned being there when he hit his 40th, and--as is usually the case with baseball players--he remembered the pitcher, the count, the pitch, everything.

i will give you this heavily cardinals-centered answer: that was jordan hicks' first appearance since 2019, when he had tommy john. the weird thing with him, his whole career, is that he doesn't have a high strikeout %, despite a 104 mph fastball and a wicker slider that's even better. it is bizarre. i am not a pitching expert or stats pro, i have no idea why this happens. but he has always been a pitcher that quickly gets to 2 strikes and then induces weak contact. he's awesome. i love him. he's great. but of all pitchers to have a 22-pitch walk, it's him
― Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Monday, 15 March 2021 05:34 (four years ago)
and it's pretty amazing that the average MLB player can at least make consistent contact on 104 mph
― Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Monday, 15 March 2021 05:35 (four years ago)
every time i watch him pitch, it's like a wholesome reminder that "these guys are good"
that is cardinals-centric, but also i feel like it might be more relevant than this 80 wRC+ rookie's contact skillz, that's right, sick BURN on the mets, i am officially RE-IGNITING the CARDINALS-METS RIVALRY, and i guarantee 100% cardinal victories this season, starting now, in spring training, right now

Forbes’ team valuations are enterprise values (equity plus net debt) based on historical transactions and the future economics of the sport and each team. Revenue and operating income (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) are for the 2023 season and are net of revenue sharing, competitive balance taxes and stadium revenue used for debt service. Ownership stakes in regional sports networks, as well as related profits or losses, are excluded from our valuations and operating results, as are investments in real estate and other businesses. (For all-inclusive sports ownership valuations, see the 2023Sports Empires rankings.) Sources include sports bankers, team and league executives, public documents like leases and filings related to public bonds, and media rights experts.

i.e., it's small compared to most of its competitors but not actually small. it's absolutely a choice to spend that little on the team
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 17 July 2024 02:01 (ten months ago)
yeah i don't doubt that pirates could be spending more, just wondering how much of that revenue share is nutter pocketing as pure profit
― 龜, Wednesday, 17 July 2024 14:14 (ten months ago)
Helping to alleviate the big financial spread among teams (the top five are worth an average of $5.1 billion versus $1.2 billion for the bottom five), was a record amount of revenue sharing in 2023. The 13 richest team, including the Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Yankees, gave $500 million combined to the 14 poorest teams, including the Tampa Bay Rays, Royals, Pittsburgh Pirates and Orioles.
so on average about $35 million to each small market team, not that much actually
― 龜, Wednesday, 17 July 2024 14:17 (ten months ago)
yankees operating income of just $2 million suggests that they are always operating on the bleeding edge and putting all their revenue back into the team
mets having an operating loss of $292 million is pretty lolmets and i'm guessing not sustainable, even with an owner like steve cohen
