voting rangers. triumph of hope over experience

all my friends are vampires (art), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 13:14 (nine years ago)

got no gripe with either team. voted blue jays bc the rangers got to two world series in a row recently, but certainly wouldn't be mad to see them advance.

I'd like to see the Rangers win one year to make up for that nightmarish WS loss a few years ago. This is not that year.

Funny interview clip on the radio this morning. A reporter was (I'm paraphrasing) asking Donaldson if he was worried that the regular season was a fluke, that the Jays offense might sputter in the playoffs. Donaldson, with just the right amount of incredulity, sarcasm, and impatience: "Have you seen our lineup?"

I'm nervous too, for an odd reason: how relatively few close games we played during the season. I completely understand that lack of close games is a sign of strength, not weakness (obviously, if you win them, I mean). But the playoffs inevitably come down to close games more often than not.

David Price's team has lost all 6 of his playoff starts. tied for second-longest streak ever. upside: longest streak of 7 is Randy Johnson's

Andy K, Thursday, 8 October 2015 22:33 (nine years ago)

I've already formulated a theory for this series: we're reliving '85 against the Royals. We were facing a team that had come close a number of times, at a point where they were somewhat forgotten. We were already looking ahead to the Series. I can see similarities with Texas. If they were to beat us, I wouldn't be shocked if they went on to win everything. Anyway, at least Donaldson/Bautista are back tomorrow.

I'd say Pete is perhaps not the guy to ask for such medical advice. I kinda think he doesn't have an off switch, which is probably why he was constantly looking for action with gambling (and unlike Jordan wasn't smart enough to stick to golf, poker or the horses). Frank Robinson and other early teammates have thought Rose was a bit nuts since he started playing, as the guy would often seem to not sleep staying out all night and ending up a the park early. The guy has to have had the constitution of an ox as most of your barnstorming players that dive around like that end up injured messes (Kirk Gibson), but he was able to pull it off for over 20 years.

I'm all for this, but only if they shorten the regular season, which won't happen.

Costas claiming that Stroman is "settling in", but he's been good the entire game, the defense let him down. Only DeShields' hit (that popped out of Bautista's glove) was hit hard.

What's up with the strike zone tonight?

40 or so pitches for Stroman through the first two innings (in part because of bad defense behind him), now he's at 89 pitches through seven.

The Rangers have been aggressive this series, Price had terrible command yesterday and still threw less than 100 pitches through seven.

Napoli was 2 for 17 vs Cecil in his career, the ball was hit into the hole vacated by the shift, can't fault Gibbons for that strategy.

I'm nervous with Osuna out there, considering how shaky he was in September, but he looked sharp.

I'm in no mood for extras, the Jays need to win this in the bottom of the ninth.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 9 October 2015 19:35 (nine years ago)

napoli is .278/.390/.527 against lefties in his career, which is a better sample size than 17 at bats. whatevs, tho -- it was a nice 'piece' of hitting

In more than 200 PA's this year, Cecil had virtually no platoon split. Seventeen at bats isn't a small sample size vs a specific pitcher IMO.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 9 October 2015 20:01 (nine years ago)

Also Cecil isn't a situational lefty, he's been the Jays best reliever for most of the season and should probably be closing games. I had no problem with him facing Napoli.

Andy K, Friday, 9 October 2015 21:49 (nine years ago)

I watched doofus managers screw up bullpen management in the playoffs year after year, and now we know that Gibbons is exactly that kind of manager. You can't fucking lose a tied playoff game with your 6th and 7th best relievers on the mound, period.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 9 October 2015 21:55 (nine years ago)

We had the whole school in the gym this afternoon, then I watched at work till nearly the end. Left in disgust/heartbreak once Texas made it 6-4.

If Edwin's ball goes out I wouldn't be saying this, but as I posted before the series started, I was uneasy about our prospects in close games. From Donaldson through Martin, the Jays spent the last half of today's game trying to hit one out. There was no attempt to go the opposite way, etc. I'm not saying bunt; just cut down on your swing a little bit.

Can't blame the loss on the appeal at second--lots of chances to win before that. But they did get it wrong. We weren't sure for replay after replay, and then, just before the umps took their headphones off, there was a replay that made it plain as day there was daylight between the foot and the base.

I'm tired of waiting for Tulowitzki to hit. He's been a far greater fielder than I expected. With the bat, a complete washout.

clemenza, Friday, 9 October 2015 22:28 (nine years ago)

Agreed about the Jays' poor approach at the plate in extras. Almost every Ranger reliever was throwing serious gas, don't try to be a hero, just get on base. The Rangers' winning rally started with two out and nobody on. There were plenty of other opportunities to win the game, you can point fingers at a long list of people before you'd get to the lost challenge in the 14th.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 9 October 2015 22:59 (nine years ago)

that was difficult to sit through.

AKA Thermo Thinwall (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 9 October 2015 23:02 (nine years ago)

Agreed. I think the call was 100% wrong, but that's not why we lost.

The most frustrating at bat for me was Bautista's against Dyson. I forget the exact situation, but I'm sitting there thinking "You cannot hit a homer off this guy--he'll be throwing sinkers at the knees, so don't even try." And Bautista swung from the heels at two sinkers towards his ankles. There just seemed to be no cognizance of the situation.

clemenza, Friday, 9 October 2015 23:14 (nine years ago)

And, I meant to add, Bautista is a smart, disciplined hitter. He's not Justin Smoak--that AB really perplexed me.

all my friends are vampires (art), Saturday, 10 October 2015 00:42 (nine years ago)

gotta disagree about Estrada. i might have used Hendricks before Hawkins or even Sanchez, but i think it's too big of a gamble to bring in a guy who has spent the last week thinking he was going to start. the Jay's have an amazing offense and it's not unreasonable to expect *someone* to do *something* in the time they had.
and ffs sake what was with Donaldson chirping? all i saw at the game was Kela was suddenly walking towards the plate. i came home to see Donaldson yapping at him about some bs.

other things that annoyed me about this game: the strike zone and Colabello throwing home instead of turning 2.

AKA Thermo Thinwall (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 10 October 2015 03:53 (nine years ago)

tv just showed donaldson saying 'fuck you (bitch)' a couple times; we couldn't see if kela said anything or not. in such cases i tend to side with the non-absurd-haircut-guy despite my jays fandom

mookieproof, Saturday, 10 October 2015 04:35 (nine years ago)

The bullpen was empty, and they were one or maybe two innings away from having to go to either Dickey or Estrada. Of course you don't want to burn the next game's starter but it's not May, it's the playoffs, and you have to feel better about Estrada giving you potentially five or six innings than hoping for the back of the bullpen to deliver. Hendriks had a good season overall but he wasn't good over the last two months, he's probably gassed after a long season, there's a reason he's at the bottom of the pecking order now.

Speaking of not managing like it's May, Stroman shouldn't have come out for the eighth. Sure, he'd only thrown about 90 pitches, but it's a one run lead and each game is too important, play whatever matchups you need to get the last six outs and get out of there with a win. This is exactly how games are lost in the playoffs, Matt Williams for example messed up Washington's season last year by doing exactly this kind of bullshit (riding his starters for an inning too long, trusting a tie game to his 7th best reliever when Strasburg was available, etc.)

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 10 October 2015 04:46 (nine years ago)

I hear what you're saying - but I don't think I can get too bent out of shape when he's only thrown 90 pitches. And he'd looked fine going into the inning.

AKA Thermo Thinwall (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 10 October 2015 04:55 (nine years ago)

stroman was only out there to face the righty leadoff hitter -- against the fact that it was de shields' fourth time at him. didn't pan out. cecil only faced napoli because of either personal history or gibbons' lack of faith in the rest of the bullpen. also didn't pan out, but they seemed like reasonable choices

i don't know enough about the jays' bullpen to speculate too much about gibbons' decisions, but even when he got two outs latroy hawkins was pretty obviously being squared up. that seemed like the most obvious issue unaddressed

mookieproof, Saturday, 10 October 2015 05:08 (nine years ago)

Yeah, he wanted to have a righty-righty matchup and then bring in Cecil without having to burn another reliever. But who cares if you burn a reliever at that point? The bullpen is rested and that's exactly the situation when you want to play those matchups.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 10 October 2015 05:17 (nine years ago)

I thought Gibbons' bullpen management was okay. Napoli's hit was seeing-eye, then they shut Texas down for five-plus innings until they got to Hawkins with two outs (which did, again, include what I believe to be a botched call at second). I put the loss squarely on the hitters, particularly our 5-for-35 murderer's row.

I didn't get the quick-pitch stuff with Donaldson; that didn't make sense to me. I thought it was more a case of Kela saying something because Donaldson stayed in the box watching the ball instead of running. To me, though, he was simply seeing if the ball was going to be fair or foul--it was clearly out. Donaldson wasn't admiring it, he was just watching to see where it was going to land.

clemenza, Saturday, 10 October 2015 12:59 (nine years ago)

Again, I don't blame the loss on this, or on the strike zone the Jays' hitters are going on about. But just for the record:

http://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/t427/sayhey1/foot_zpssmlji9ot.jpg

clemenza, Saturday, 10 October 2015 13:10 (nine years ago)

I'm honestly not sure if that dull area between the foot and bag is dirt/cleat or a shaded corner of the bag.

At any rate, it's up to Estrada and Dicky now, but only so much as the bats need to get their job done. Not sure I can bear to watch us get eliminated so early.

AKA Thermo Thinwall (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 10 October 2015 14:54 (nine years ago)

The one TV replay seemed clearer than the photo. Anyway, history.

As sour as I sound, I haven't abandoned hope. With Cecil out, our best chance is probably to come out and put up 10 runs on the board each game in Texas. We can do that.

Looking at the replays and high res photos as objectively as possible, I can't see enough clear evidence to overturn the call.

I can't complain about our pitching so far. Two walks and fifteen strikeouts for the hitters in Game 2 is the problem. They're a high OBP team that doesn't strike out and in the first two games they've forgotten that.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 10 October 2015 15:47 (nine years ago)

Again, I don't blame the loss on this, or on the strike zone the Jays' hitters are going on about. But just for the record:

that dark spot under his foot is a shadow, not dirt. it's certainly possible that he was off the bag but the call on the field was safe, so to overturn it you would have to be certain that it was wrong

k3vin k., Saturday, 10 October 2015 16:11 (nine years ago)

It probably falls into that grey area of not being conclusive enough to overturn. The one replay on TV, the very last one, did look conclusive to me.

Curious whether Tulowitzki will stay in the 5th spot. I know what Gibbons is thinking, because I've been thinking the same thing: the idea that as soon as he breaks out of this (very) prolonged slump, he'll start to hit like crazy. At least I was thinking that up until this last game. I told everyone beforehand that he would get the day's big hit, and three or four times yesterday I was convinced it was going to happen. But I think I've lost faith in him at this point, and would rather have Martin hitting fifth.

Yes. He had hitters (especially Fielder) off-balance all night, started dropping in curves in the middle of the game, and I don't think he laid more than a half-dozen pitches right over the plate.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 12 October 2015 03:42 (nine years ago)

Looked up Dickey's stats in Texas and they were terrible. But almost all of that was as a Ranger. He's had two pretty good starts there since coming to Toronto: 12 innings, 10 hits, 6 BB, 6 K, 4 runs. This'll be his first start there this year.

I would definitely settle for 6 innings and 2 runs today.

nerd shit (Will M.), Monday, 12 October 2015 23:55 (nine years ago)

Incredible jump-start today--thrilling.

Count me as someone who's utterly baffled by the Price move. A couple of you guys point to the exactly the same theory my brother-in-law has: that Gibbons didn't have faith in Price for game 5, had already decided on Stroman, and this gives him some cover. Even if Price had pitched well, it still makes Stroman the game 5 starter.

I'm not sure I buy that--it sounds a little too clever, and I'm not sure if managers think that way--but it's more credible than anything I heard from Tabler or Wilner (whose one weakness, I think, is that he's a Gibbons apologist).

I don't hate pitcher wins as much as most people on this board, but if you ever wanted an extreme example of the win protocol at its most absurd, today's game was it.

clemenza, Tuesday, 13 October 2015 00:39 (nine years ago)

I was floating that exact Stroman/Gibbons theory to a friend during the game!
If the jays win game five, the ALCS rotation could go: Estrada - Price - Stroman - Dickey (allowing Stroman to be our game 7 starter if necessary)

AKA Thermo Thinwall (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 13 October 2015 04:03 (nine years ago)

I can believe that Gibbons wants to ride the "hot hand" with Stroman (SSS alert) and ignore Price's entire career (not to mention his excellent two months as a Blue Jay minus one postseason start, which wasn't even all that bad TBH).

Then again I can't say it isn't the right move. It's not like Stroman is a ten year journeyman putting together a five start hot streak. He was the best Jays starter going into spring training and that may not have changed.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 13 October 2015 08:00 (nine years ago)

I can believe that Gibbons wants to ride the "hot hand" with Stroman (SSS alert) and ignore Price's entire career (not to mention his excellent two months as a Blue Jay minus one postseason start, which wasn't even all that bad TBH).

Pretty much exactly how I feel (even though I don't know what "SSS alert" means...).

I'll give Gibbons credit for one thing: doing what he wants to do and not worrying about criticism. If he were to go with Price in game 5 and Price loses, no one ever says anything--that's why Price was brought here. By going with Stroman, he opens himself up to a winter of hostile second-guessing.

Another weird theory: that one by-product of yesterday was that Price ended his post-season losing streak. The win was of course completely bogus, but maybe Gibbons felt that, going forward, it was important to Price psychologically that that was behind him. I don't actually believe that, but removing Dickey one out shy of the win was yet one more bizarre thing about yesterday's sequence of events.

Contrary to what Dickey says publically, I wonder how he really feels about yesterday. His manager essentially said that he didn't trust him to hold a six-run lead on a day when he was pitching very well.

clemenza, Tuesday, 13 October 2015 12:57 (nine years ago)

also pulling dickey there -- at age not-quite-41, in his playoff debut, having pitched effectively, with a six-run lead -- meant that price was not just relieving for the first time in five years, but came in in the middle of an inning immediately throwing from the stretch

mookieproof, Tuesday, 13 October 2015 14:13 (nine years ago)

the win thing for Price is interesting. Dickey did not look happy about coming out when he did, but it seemed as if he was over it by the end of the game. hopefully he'll get another shot at a W in the ALCS! (fingers crossed)

AKA Thermo Thinwall (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 13 October 2015 15:41 (nine years ago)

price and kershaw have some big games coming up for their 'legacy'

panettone for the painfully alone (mayor jingleberries), Tuesday, 13 October 2015 17:20 (nine years ago)

I don't think Dickey could care less about getting a W. Gibbons had obviously decided that Price was the go-to guy for long relief or if Dickey got in trouble early so I'm sure he (Dickey) wasn't expecting to pitch deep into the game. Maybe this is Gibbons' way of keeping everybody relatively fresh for Game 5. Nobody really believes it when he says that Price won't be available to pitch tomorrow.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 13 October 2015 19:53 (nine years ago)

James got three questions on Pricegate today. (I know that's really corny, but it sounds significantly better than Dickeygate.) The first two were sorting out what happened; here's the third.

I think what Michael P is referring to is the question of whether Gibbons needed to take Dickey out when he did-with two outs, a runner on first, with a 6 run lead in the fifth inning. From my perspective, it seemed like Dickey could have gotten through at least that inning and possibly another inning or two without wasting Price. Another odd thing is that Price apparently had not pitched well against the Rangers previously and, in fact gave up three runs yesterday. I'm not sure what the rush was to put him in other than Gibbons basically said that if Price warmed up, he was coming in. I certainly understand why Gibbons would not want to play around with the lead and, obviously, the Jays had to use all hands on deck to win the game, but it did not seem necessary at that point. So Price certainly isn't available on Wednesday and, possibly not for Game 1 in the ALCS if the Jays win. I actually thought the same thing that Michael did-why is he taking Dickey out now?
Asked by: Marc Schneider

Answered: 10/13/2015
Yeah...it SEEMS odd from this perspective. It is possible that there was something going on that we don't know, but very often, when you get spectacularly unusual decisions like that, they occur because the manager (or other authority figure) has "thought through" the problem before the situation arises, and then is attempting to apply their a priori thinking to a situation where it doesn't really work. That was true in the 2003 game Game 7 ALCS when Grady Little left an obviously toasted Pedro Martinez on the mound to let the game get away. Grady had decided before the situation arose that "Pedro was our guy". Pedro was his horse, his #1 pitcher; when the game was on the line, he was going with Pedro. Good enough, but Pedro obviously had nothing, so it didn't work...We see this all the time in legal conflicts, that the judge is resolving the issue based on an a priori policy, but the previously determined policy doesn't anticipate the realities of the situation.

They want to get through the 8th with Sanchez, but he's up to 21 pitches already. One more baserunner and he's basically cooked.

Nobody available to face the lefties, to get a key strikeout ... so if there was a time to use Price (if that was the plan all along), this is it.

Still wired and watching some highlights ... there are all sorts of crazy things I'd already forgotten about, such as:

-- Pompey's questionable slide into home causing yet another long delay
-- a player getting ejected who wasn't even on the active roster (Cecil)
-- Revere somehow getting thrown out on Donaldson's run scoring fielders choice to the outfield
-- fans losing their minds and not even catching Bautista's HR ball

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 15 October 2015 00:35 (nine years ago)

Apparently Buehrle was ejected at some point too, so that's two inactive players getting ejected.

Lots of credit goes to the umps for somehow keeping the game relatively civil and professional.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 15 October 2015 00:42 (nine years ago)

It was Beuhrle, not Cecil--he was in the dugout in the 8th or 9th and they corrected that.

Goins was a blank with the bat the whole series, but man he was great in the field tonight. Hoping he's ready to break out offensively.

Gotta single out that one play by Donaldson too (I think it was on DeShields, and there was a runner on). I thought it was a great play right away; seeing how the ball hopped and changed directions on the replay, it became an amazing play.

didn't see the game. was there bad blood leading up to that?

Spottie, Thursday, 15 October 2015 03:55 (nine years ago)

After the game, Dyson was asked what was said on the field that brought both teams out to home plate as the inning ended.

"I told him Jose needs to calm that down," Dyson said. "Just kind of respect the game a little more."

Bat flipping has been a huge issue all season long, one that has led to batters being thrown at on several occasions.

That did not happen on Wednesday, but Dyson hopes Bautista gets his point.

"He's a huge role model for the younger generation that's coming up and playing this game," Dyson said. "He's doing stuff that kids do in Wiffle Ball games and backyard baseball.

"It shouldn't be done."

How did I not even catch that?!

So you've missed the neighborhood play and the assplay?

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 15 October 2015 08:06 (nine years ago)

Near riot is pushing it a bit. It was nothing compared to, say, when ARod slapped at the ball during the bloody sock game. There were police on the field until the game ended in that one. Still, I'm not sure when exactly Blue Jays fans started turning into Phillies or Oakland Raiders fans.

I have never understood the mentality of throwing garbage onto the field though. I have no clue why anyone would want to do that. Getting drunk isn't an "excuse" either, nobody gets drunk in a bar and starts throwing full glasses of beer across the room.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 15 October 2015 08:21 (nine years ago)

The most amazing thing Bautista's HR is that I wasn't expecting it at all. It was the same with Carter's HR in '93 -- we'd just blown the lead, and I was hoping we could score in the 9th while at the same time dreading a Game 7 the next day. I was NOT thinking about the possibility of winning the WS during that at-bat, and it took a moment's hesitation until I realized what had happened. It was the same thing last night, we'd given up the lead, somehow tied the score without getting the ball out of the infield, but were about to blow a chance at yet another big inning. I was looking for a run while imagining how the game might play out if we didn't score (especially if we went on to lose), I definitely wasn't expecting or hoping for a HR. Then it happened and I basically lost my shit.

AKA Thermo Thinwall (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 15 October 2015 13:32 (nine years ago)

>I'm not sure when exactly Blue Jays fans started turning into Phillies or Oakland Raiders fans.

i can pinpoint exactly when this happened. right after we got the TFC. i noticed a change instantly – all of the sudden there was a small subset of fans who had decided acting like soccer hooligans was a fun thing they should be doing at Jays games.
and i say this realizing it sounds like kind of an idiotic theory, but i'm convinced that's what it was.

also, as i have tickets for game 6 in the 500s – I *really* hope they don't turn that section dry again.

AKA Thermo Thinwall (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 15 October 2015 13:39 (nine years ago)

Obviously, I loved the bat flip and don't fault Bautista a bit. He's earned it--a guy that had been given up on, who was the resident star on a floundering team, etc. A pure, spontaneous, cathartic reaction, not directed at Dyson at all, I don't think. (Maybe a little.)

I don't blame Dyson for what he said about Bautista. Just words from a heartsick player, meaningless.

I do blame Dyson for his interactions with Encarnacion (how did he misunderstand Encarnacion's intentions? seemed clear as could be) and, especially, Tulowitzski (although I would like to know what he said to Tulowitzski).

The issue with the Martin play with everyone I've spoken to at work seems to be the umpire calling the play dead. I'm not sure what the rule book says about that. I've been saying that there was no way the Jays were going to make that play anyway, but maybe they need to take a look at how to handle a play that's ruled dead.

clemenza, Thursday, 15 October 2015 14:23 (nine years ago)

The umpire calling time/dead doesn't mean anything, really. Because in these series they want to get the rules right. Except for takeout slides.

OK, what's the TFC?

kudos to harold reynolds, btw -- he knew right away that that ball was/should be live. i don't really expect him to know anything about canada, but he was right on top of that one.

and to rougie for taking home and forcing the issue.

mookieproof, Thursday, 15 October 2015 14:35 (nine years ago)

Interesting theory about the TFC. Toronto fans were never known for being rowdy even when they had sellouts every night in the 80's and 90's, so it's not that you have more noise because there are more people.

My theory (purely speculation though) is that the Raptors and Leafs have sucked for so long and the city has been waiting impatiently for a winning team to rally behind. There was a silent majority of hardcore fans who weren't going to the games as often because the team wasn't going anywhere. As soon as the Jays became competitive those people came rushing back and swept half the city with them. This also explains why Jays fans have suddenly turned up in huge numbers at road games -- that *never* used to happen.

The most amazing thing Bautista's HR is that I wasn't expecting it at all.

that is the incredible thing about home runs, they take all the multiple branching possibilities you've been toying with, eking out, working towards and just flip them all in the air, reset. that whole inning was such an epic ball-ache of niggles and misunderstandings and bases won 90 feet at a time in the ugliest fashion imaginable that bautista's HR came like a fucking cleansing rain. just amazing, what a roar from the crowd.

that bautista's HR came like a fucking cleansing rain. just amazing, what a roar from the crowd.

Yes, if they'd scratched out another run in that inning or later in the game, it would have gone down as a monumental choke job by the Rangers rather than a big win for the Jays, but Bautista's bomb validated the win in a way that wouldn't have been possible otherwise. The Rangers had their shot with the tying run at the plate in the eighth, and Osuna shut them down.

This game won't be any less legendary even with the ALCS loss.
