Brandon Belt, the guy is streaky has hell but he is now playing for a major contract and the Giants just haven't given it to him yet.
― Bee OK, Wednesday, 9 March 2016 03:58 (nine years ago)
maybe even Joe Panik, now that i think about it. he was hurt last year after putting up massive numbers. he will be on a mission this year to prove himself.

― Bee OK, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 06:09 (nine years ago)
but wow, can this team score some runs, this is going to be fun.
heh, check this fangraphs article speculating that bumgarner's neuroma issue on his plant foot is driving his recent poor performance:
http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/the-change-officially-worried-about-madison-bumgarner/
and then the comments section, where someone mentions that the neuroma is on bumgarner's left foot, and he's a lefty, so it's not affecting his plant foot at all, leading to eno sarris' "You are correct and I’m upset with myself."

and should have had the fourth game as well.
As the medical staff was checking on Cueto in the dugout after slipping in the mud, the 10-batter half-inning, and 41,656 fans began calculating how severe the beating would be, Hunter Pence and Angel Pagan walked past their pitcher and delivered a message.“They told me to keep the game at 5-0 and they would take care of the rest,” Cueto said. “That’s what I did.”

i love that we have Cueto, watched him a bit when on the Reds but had no idea he was this good.
― Bee OK, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 04:13 (nine years ago)
so glad he threw out his back in that one playoff game a few years back.
strike him out, throw him out

now off to the big apple, should be a fun series.
Peavy vs. Matz on Friday Night.
i will still be at work.
― Bee OK, Friday, 29 April 2016 02:03 (nine years ago)
this is better:
Friday: Jake Peavy (1-1, 6.86) vs. Steven Matz (2-1, 5.40).
Saturday: Matt Cain (0-2, 6.43) vs. Jacob deGrom (2-0, 1.54).
Sunday: Madison Bumgarner (2-2, 3.64) vs. Noah Syndergaard (2-0, 1.69).

Johnny Cueto has some serious guile, I thought signing him could be a good deal as he has enough skills that losing a bit on his fastball might not matter as much as some pitchers. Big thing with him is keeping him healthy and not having that abdominal injury come back, as it has before. He's real fun to watch pitch as he's got a bunch of odd timing tricks he uses on batters.
I guess he is going against the Reds early next week.

i really think the Giants need to stay away from Tim Lincecum. been there done that, has already pitched for the Giants two more years than he should have. time to move on.

"my observations of Cueto is, you can get to him in the first inning. if you give him the lead, i don't care how good the other team is, vs won't score on him."
Cueto is definitely a groove starter. I hate this style of baseball, but slowing things down and trying to make him wait is not a bad strategy as he likes to work quick. I've also seen him get so much movement, he gets a bit wild.
― earlnash, Saturday, 21 May 2016 03:41 (nine years ago)
One thing about Cueto is that he is wicked on his pickoff move, especially for a righty. He's got a few different tricks there too.
― earlnash, Saturday, 21 May 2016 03:42 (nine years ago)
How much do the Giants and Posey use pickoff moves from behind the plate?

― Bee OK, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 00:47 (nine years ago)
Giants are a witch in a short series with the top of their rotation, that is for sure. Bumbgarner, Cueto and Shark would be a tough 1-3.
One thing I see in this Cubs club in a short series that I think could haunt in the playoffs is how much they strike out. I always thought that was a flaw in Torre's later clubs with the Yanks in the playoffs, they would run into a club with 1-2 top starters who would shut them down with swings and misses.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 03:08 (nine years ago)

So last year the Giants were really really good at working counts and tiring pitchers, this has been a bit lost this season but it's one these things I could see popping back again because of player superstition and their mystical system of belief (even year, being hot, 'everything goes your way'. etc).

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/giants/2016/06/07/madison-bumgarner-doesnt-see-risk-asked-take-part-star-home-run-derby/
SAN FRANCISCO – Madison Bumgarner wants to become the first pitcher to participate in the All-Star home run derby. He isn’t sure if he could win it, but he’s darn sure he wouldn’t embarrass himself...
The left-hander made it clear he “wasn’t politicking” to participate in the derby, but if asked, he wouldn’t refuse.
The story became a story after ESPN’s Buster Olney asked Bumgarner in St. Louis, if he’d like to take part, and the pitcher answered honestly.
Then Bumgarner took batting practice and crushed home runs into Big Mac Land, hitting a fourth-decker shot on his final swing.
― Bee OK, Wednesday, 8 June 2016 02:43 (nine years ago)
please, no. have a real hitter take part. i love Bum and everything but this event is for the hitters.

With their 12th win in 13 outings, the Giants moved 21 games above .500. They are 31-9 since May 11, marking their most victories in a 40-game span since 1954.

oh William, i have no idea anymore.

loving Pena, are we the new Cards?
― Van Horn Street, Sunday, 26 June 2016 04:03 (nine years ago)
gigantes have kinda been cards 2.0 since 2012 - although unlike the cards, "awful and obsessed with the corniest play-the-right-way aspects and pastoral aesthetics of baseball" is not the baseline attitude of /most/ giants fans I've interacted with
― if young slothrop don't trust ya i'm gon' rhyme ya (slothroprhymes), Sunday, 26 June 2016 18:20 (nine years ago)
which is to say, the only reasonable cards fans I've interacted with are ilxors, whereas I've met pleasant giants fans irl and online, so that's an advantage imo
wait, were you asking if there's an actual baseball similarity in that case I got nothin
― if young slothrop don't trust ya i'm gon' rhyme ya (slothroprhymes), Sunday, 26 June 2016 18:28 (nine years ago)
everything going the Giant's way + ability to produce good talent seemingly out of nowhere was the equation i was basing myself on.
― Van Horn Street, Sunday, 26 June 2016 18:44 (nine years ago)
that's def true the past month and a half - not sure how sustainable all of it is, but then again #evenyear

MadBum is DH for the Giants tonight. first time a pitcher has done that in 40 years.
― Bee OK, Friday, 1 July 2016 02:47 (nine years ago)
He is not even listed as a DH :D
Win two in Oakland.
― Van Horn Street, Friday, 1 July 2016 02:56 (nine years ago)
he is not the DH. He is the pitcher who is hitting.
― helpless before THRILLARY (Dr Morbius), Friday, 1 July 2016 02:58 (nine years ago)
lol, i read it wrong.
― Bee OK, Friday, 1 July 2016 02:59 (nine years ago)
but then the Giants don't have a DH in an American League park.
Belt/Posey
― Van Horn Street, Friday, 1 July 2016 03:13 (nine years ago)
oh wait, we already lost in Oakland.
― Van Horn Street, Friday, 1 July 2016 03:16 (nine years ago)
yeah, they haven't been playing very well.
― Bee OK, Friday, 1 July 2016 03:44 (nine years ago)
some really tough loses.

― Van Horn Street, Friday, 1 July 2016 03:56 (nine years ago)
you can get to Cueto in the first inning. after that game over!
― Bee OK, Saturday, 2 July 2016 02:19 (nine years ago)
i know Spottie
such shame
never brag, it very unbecoming
Cueto is learning, he hasn't been on team quite like this.
― Bee OK, Saturday, 2 July 2016 02:31 (nine years ago)
only Championships matter, everything else if fluff.
― Bee OK, Saturday, 2 July 2016 02:32 (nine years ago)

― Bee OK, Saturday, 2 July 2016 02:49 (nine years ago)
Cueto is one of most fascinating players in all of MLB
― Bee OK, Saturday, 2 July 2016 02:54 (nine years ago)
agreed, i love to imagine Cueto in other sports situation. Cueto playing tennis, Cueto surfing, Cueto long distance swimming, Cueto playing hockey.
― Van Horn Street, Saturday, 2 July 2016 02:58 (nine years ago)
was gonna go to the game tonight but will have to settle for tomorrow.
― moistest hoist (Spottie), Saturday, 2 July 2016 03:18 (nine years ago)
The Giants have designated righty Mike Broadway for assignment. His 40-man spot was needed to activate veteran reliever Sergio Romo, with righty Albert Suarez being demoted to free up an active roster spot.
― Bee OK, Tuesday, 5 July 2016 00:41 (nine years ago)
Suarez has been very good but i guess Cain is on his way back.
Giants now have more wins than anyone else in MLB.
― Bee OK, Tuesday, 5 July 2016 00:42 (nine years ago)
@mccoveychronBumgarner has now walked more this season than Shawon Dunston did with the Giants in '98, '01, and '02 combined (401 PA).
@jay_jaffewhile you were reading this, Dunston swung at it and missed
― helpless before THRILLARY (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 6 July 2016 09:40 (nine years ago)
i know it is hard to complain about a first place team. this team is so messed up right now, the bullpen has been blowing games left and right. the Giants need a arm and it has nothing to do with starting pitching this time.
― Bee OK, Thursday, 7 July 2016 01:32 (nine years ago)
we expect nothing less from you, Bee
― helpless before THRILLARY (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 7 July 2016 01:50 (nine years ago)
the Giants are 16-2 in Johnny Cueto’s starts this year, wow.
― Bee OK, Friday, 8 July 2016 01:39 (nine years ago)
i know Bumgarner is the ace but Cueto is right there. i had no idea he was this good. i was lukewarm on the signing but really they could not have done better.

the D-backs head hunting Posey
― Bee OK, Saturday, 9 July 2016 03:33 (nine years ago)
still can't believe this teams record and no one in the national media is talking about them. that's fine, underdog role seems to fit this team.
― Bee OK, Saturday, 9 July 2016 03:36 (nine years ago)
oh and happy #VoteBelt worked out. i voted about 20 times but Brandon Crawford is much more deserving...
― Bee OK, Saturday, 9 July 2016 03:37 (nine years ago)
another win and a league high 56 wins. hope to have 57, after tomorrow nights ESPN showcase game, before the all-star break.

Bumgarner dealing, 12 up 12 down and 8 strikeouts.

― frogbs, Monday, 11 July 2016 02:13 (nine years ago)
and myself, i needed this after the finale de l'euro, even if it doesn't end up being a no-hitter just seeing that performance is picking me up.
― Van Horn Street, Monday, 11 July 2016 02:15 (nine years ago)
what a time to miss a game, wow.
― Bee OK, Monday, 11 July 2016 03:22 (nine years ago)

― Van Horn Street, Monday, 11 July 2016 21:25 (nine years ago)
so i watched last nights game as i did happen to record it. what a performance from Bumgarner. i was thinking Cueto might be eclipsing him on this team, turns out i am wrong.
― Bee OK, Tuesday, 12 July 2016 01:48 (nine years ago)
14k but you can tell he was running on fumes at the end there.
57 - 33

― Bee OK, Sunday, 17 July 2016 04:33 (nine years ago)
devastating lost last night, might be the worst one yet this year. Posey hit a going ahead home run in the 10th just to watch our closer give up two runs and lose without getting an out. Casilla needs to be replaces ASAP.

"When Stennett had his big day, the Pirates beat the Cubs 22-0. That was a nine-run game as early as the first inning, so in the end, Stennett registered a Win Probability Added — WPA — of +0.082. Crawford registered a WPA of +1.438. He was essentially worth about a win and a half on his own. By regular numbers, Crawford had an impressive game. When you take context into account, Crawford had one of the very greatest days in baseball history."

what an epic collapse, 9 -21 since the all-star break.
mookieproof, are you going to send me an Oasis ballot? ;-)
― Bee OK, Thursday, 18 August 2016 01:15 (nine years ago)
It’s an important start for Cain, since the Giants are discussing the possibility of skipping his next turn and using Monday’s day off to move up the rest of the rotation. As you know, Bochy and pitching coach Dave Righetti almost always prefer to give the starting pitchers an extra day. But skipping Cain would allow them to get Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto and Matt Moore at Dodger Stadium – and one of the reasons they got Moore was to have another dependable lefty to combat the Dodgers’ left-leaning lineup.
now that he lost, i can see them skipping him. i would much rather have Pevey but he is not making 20 million...

Every time a Giants fan uses the words "want" or "deserve," an angel gets its wings ripped off, a puppy is set on fire, a bumfight is paid for with two greasy five dollar bills, and the Giants lose another game.
― aaaaaaaauuuuuuuuu (melting robot) (WilliamC), Thursday, 8 September 2016 21:54 (nine years ago)
This historical collapse is maybe what the Giant's fans deser... what they needed. I became a fan of the club (and of baseball) in 2012, and yet I have never felt closer to the team than this season.
― Van Horn Street, Friday, 9 September 2016 03:20 (nine years ago)
that is very interesting. no-one had a change against the Giants after that Reds game. i was on pens and needles and ever pitch seemed like an hour. then Zito and the Panda did the rest.
i moved to San Francisco in 1995. came from Southern California and could care less about sports. the Bay Area is different and made me a sports fan. 2002 was the second year i watched baseball. it was the NFL that got me hooked. the Giants are my love thou.

did anyone see what Bochy did last night?
It was a brilliant one. He had Cory Gearrin start the 12th for one out, then sent him to left field while Javier Lopez pitched to Lamb. It was the first time a Giants pitcher played a position other than on the mound since Noah Lowry in 2005, and the first time a Giants pitcher had gone to play a position and return to the mound since Keith Comstock did it in 1987. Lopez walked Lamb, who stole second base after Gearrin re-entered. Paul Goldschmidt was walked intentionally. But Gearrin got the benefit of a 3-2 pitch on the edge of the strike zone to Welington Castillo, drawing an immediate wail of protest from the batter and an ejection. Gearrin then battled Yasmany Tomás in an eight-pitch at-bat and the five-hour, 23-minute game ended with a ground out to second base, along with sighs of relief in the visiting dugout.

after being so crushed last night.
at least Madison Bumgarner is maybe starting to understand:
http://www.sfgate.com/giants/article/Dodgers-mock-Bumgarner-on-social-media-plus-why-9235611.php
Neither Bumgarner nor Giants manager Bruce Bochy directly stated the reason, but a few on-the-record comments and some off the record suggest that after the seventh inning ended with the Puig incident, Bochy spoke to Bumgarner in the dugout and concluded his pitcher had expended too much energy and was too hyped up from the scuffle to continue. So Bochy decided to pinch-hit for Bumgarner.

― Bee OK, Thursday, 22 September 2016 00:15 (nine years ago)
The rivalry in San Francisco began at Seals Stadium in 1958 — rookie Orlando Cepeda homered as the Giants trounced Don Drysdale 8-0 in the first big-league game on the West Coast — and moved to Candlestick Park and eventually Pacific Bell Park, and Scully recalled every step of the way, starting when he called games just a row behind fans at Seals Stadium.“A fellow would turn around and just say to me, ‘Do you have a match?’” Scully said. “It was that informal and that close.”In those days, broadcasters read the commercials between innings, and Scully sometimes found himself in competition with Giants fans, especially when he read beer commercials.“They’d start hollering the names of all the other brands of beer that they could possibly think of,” Scully said, “so that taught us to record all the commercials rather than be heckled by the fans.”At Candlestick, fans at Dodgers-Giants games sometimes were as competitive as the players, not necessarily in a good way.“At Candlestick, the wind was a nightmare,” Scully said, “but I also thought that the surroundings affected the personality of the audience. I could be completely wrong, but it was cold, raw, windy, and I think the people in the stands were unhappy and sometimes would take their unhappiness out.“But once they moved to AT&T Park, it’s completely different. The fans are good-natured, they’re happy, they’re fair, they’re wonderful. … The weather at AT&T has made it a wonderful party atmosphere. No meanness at all.”That’s where Scully’s career will end and a long, wonderful chapter of Giants-Dodgers lore will close. In his 67th year chronicling and analyzing two storied teams, Scully will sign off for the last time and extend a “very pleasant good evening” to a rivalry that wouldn’t have been the same without him.

http://www.sfgate.com/giants/article/Giants-acquire-infielder-Cueto-to-start-Thursday-9311710.php
The Giants acquired infielder Gordon Beckham from the Braves to boost the right side of the bench and lineup in light of Eduardo Nuñez's hamstring strain. They also placed outfielder Mac Williamson on the 60-day disabled list with a quadriceps strain, ending his season.
Minor-league infielder Rich Rodriguez went to the Braves in the deal.
The Giants also promoted a third catcher, former Pittsburgh Pirate Tony Sanchez, giving manager Bruce Bochy more flexibility in pinch-hitting his backup catcher and making defensive moves. Lastly, they designated left-hander Matt Reynolds for assignment to clear another 40-man spot.

http://www.sfgate.com/giants/article/Giants-notes-Duffy-visits-Nu-ez-iffy-for-9403227.php
Former Giants third baseman Matt Duffy stopped by the clubhouse before Wednesday’s game and wished his old pals well in their quest for a playoff bid.“I’ll give myself to the end of the season to root for them,” said Duffy, who was shipped to Tampa Bay at the Aug. 1 trade deadline. “Next year, they’re on their own.”Duffy is recovering from Achilles surgery and walked in a protective boot Wednesday, the first day he was able to ditch his crutches. He’ll remain in a boot six weeks and anticipates doing full baseball activity in early January. He was in the Bay Area to clear out his place in Walnut Creek and wanted to visit with his old teammates one more time before returning home to Southern California.“I obviously care about this organization a lot,” Duffy said. “I think I always will -- as long as they’re not playing us. I’m definitely rooting for them the rest of the way.”Duffy, whose last game as a Giant was June 19, didn’t want to hear about his old team’s ongoing second-half struggles. The Giants are 26-41 since the All-Star break.“The last five years or whatever, it’s the same story almost,” he said. “Everybody counts the Giants out until the last few weeks or whatever. Even in 2014, we were struggling. You’ve just got to get in. Once you get in, anything can happen. It’s a different ballgame. For the most part, you’ve got three (starters). It’s managed differently. The intensity ramps up. Guys who can keep calm in those situations are the guys that come out on top. That’s what this group has.”

The Giants' feeling on the Cardinals-Reds brouhaha from Thursday night is, it's none of our business.General manager Bobby Evans said Friday that it was not the Giants' place to call the league and opine whether the outcome at Busch Stadium, a 4-3 St. Louis victory, should be overturned. There was no indication the Reds filed a formal protest arguing that Yadier Molina's game-winning double actually bounced over the left-field wall and should have been ruled an automatic double, which would have forced baserunner Matt Carpenter to stop at third. Instead, Carpenter scored to give St. Louis a crucial win impact the wild-card race and the Giants. The Reds wanted a replay challenge but did not inform the umpires in time."There is no recourse for a third party," Evans said. "Our focus has to be here."Giants fans hoped the Reds would protest the game. If the protest were upheld, Cincinnati and St. Louis would have to meet again to pick up the game from the point of the protest. It made little sense for the Reds to protest. They are going home for the winter, and I can't imagine they want to fly to St. Louis to play Monday, knowing the whole thing could be finished on one pitch. If Giants fans want to be upset with what happened, that's fine. But they probably should be more upset the Giants have gone 27-42 in the second half. Had they gone 34-35 they would have 91 wins, same as the Dodgers, and would have popped Champagne corks by now for reaching the postseason.
