Wong at second base. 5 4
worth noting that 1) Gyorko has been on fire recently, and 2) it was discussed earlier in the game that Wong has the flu
he made 2 errors in the 3 hour long bottom of the 6th inning that followed. one is officially recorded, the other wasn't (the second to last play of the inning, an easy double play was interrupted by a throw to Wong that he held onto just long enough to record the out at second and then drop before throwing to first)

The biggest mismatch of all time according to our pitcher scores was a 137-point Elo swing back in 1997, when Randy Johnson (+87) faced Ricky Bones (-50).

ST. LOUIS -- They have determination, they have grit.
Martinez finally found a rhythm and managed to get through five innings.
Arrieta's game score, 40, was his lowest in more than a year. That, perhaps, is something to feel good about even if an eight-game deficit in the division standings isn't.
One fateful inning did in Martinez, much as it had Wacha the night before. Martinez worked a good inning before it and three good innings after it. In the second, the Cubs hit line drives all over the field.
Martinez puffed up with pride a bit when describing how he was able to regroup and stay in the game without a long reliever available.
― nomar, Thursday, 26 May 2016 17:08 (nine years ago)
They must avoid fateful innings and focus on making statements.
― Andy K, Thursday, 26 May 2016 17:16 (nine years ago)
martinez was ace-like except for that inning where he gave up six runs. arrieta meanwhile is basically trash.

i realize you have to take the age difference into account but other than for about 45 games this year he's been pretty miserable at the plate. most projections put him as a 45 at the plate

mlb.com gives him a 50, but yeah maybe you're right
he's certainly not a correa/seager/bregman, but he's also been basically four years younger than his competition all along, so it's tough to tell. (and a fair portion of his games have been in wilmington, which is an extreme pitchers' park.)
i'm a little curious why the royals have brought him up now when they don't seem to be going anywhere this year

Machado is just the second player in Major League history to hit a home run in the first, second and third inning of the game. The other was Carl Reynolds of the White Sox on July 2, 1930, at the Yankees, according to Stats. Machado is the ninth player in MLB history to hit a homer in three consecutive innings at any point during the game.

Yeah, it was slightly alarming at first. After McHugh's warmup throws in the 2nd, Gattis threw down to 2nd base and Altuve just completely missed the ball and it hit him on the front of the shoulder joint. It obviously hurt like hell but he's still in the game.

first google result for "is the ball juiced 2016", but even as far back as May 1 this year there's this:
At the risk of sounding like someone who believes in chemtrails and listens to Infowars religiously, I have a confession to make: More and more I’m convinced that juiced balls are causing a home run spike throughout baseball.I am far from the only one. It’s hitters and pitchers and coaches and executives and even rational, cogent analysts who cannot find a reasonable explanation for the spike in home runs dating back to last August. The HR/FB rate – the percentage of fly balls that end up over the fence – spiked over the season’s final two months, and it has continued this April. With 11.8 percent of fly balls leaving the yard in the season’s first month, it marked the highest April rate since the league started tracking the data in 2002. The number mirrored those of August (12.2 percent) and September (12.3 percent), which Hardball Times analyst Jon Roegele noticed after not even a month. Roegele studied it and came to an impasse.“I couldn't find anything to describe that amount of HR/offensive change, as far as weather, strike zone, where pitchers were pitching, etc.,” he wrote in an email this week. “I suspected that they changed something with the balls after the All-Star break last year as nothing else in the data could explain it.”

Seeing Arenado up there among the league leaders in WAR on Baseball Reference makes me again wonder if you can adjust enough for Colorado players. 2016: .318/.389/.661 at home, .276/.338/.495 on the road. Career: .309/.356/.583 at home, .260/.304/.456 on the road. Or to put it another way, Tulowitzki this year: .256/.331/.447 at home, .262/.320/.467 on the road. His road stats aren't that far off what he's done his whole career; he's the same player he's always been.

A year ago I didn't think I'd be saying "the matchup between Kevin Gausman and Rick Porcello was one for the ages."

a large part of Arenado's WAR is defense
and yes you can "adjust enough"

Arenado is not even in the top 10 in NL Offensive WAR on B-R
(DJ LeMahieu is)

@EvanDrellichYou can expect Padres to be punished I'm told. What form is to be seen. One common point I'm hearing: Dombrowski is wrong guy to cross.

@keithlaw Spot on. If owners are simply hiring this archetype, minorities have no shot, and a lot of good baseball people are screwed.
