Only 60 hits left for Ichiro to get to 3000, will HBO make a documentary? Nah.

Also, we will see a lot of this over the season I'm sure: http://www.sbnation.com/2016/4/19/11460600/christian-yelich-barry-bonds

I hope one day Barry gets a ring as a coach/manager, won't happen with these .333 Marlins.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 20 April 2016 23:08 (nine years ago)

During the weekend MIA series, the ATL booth seemed dubious that Ichiro would get enough ABs to get to 3000 this year. Sounded like a gallon of haterade to me -- esp since he came in in the 6th and had 2 hits that game.

David Schoenfield
Giancarlo Stanton, mired in a terrible slump in May, has swung and missed on 40.4 percent of swings on the season. In our database going back to 2009, that's the highest rate for a regular player. Even Mark Reynolds hasn't hit that percentage.

Andy K, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 01:43 (nine years ago)

Ichiro has ten hits in his last three games and is hitting .417. This 3000 hits thing is actually going to happen (40 hits to go).

ichiro is 2-3 tonight with two BB, 3 runs scored. 24 hits to 3,000.

"It sounds like in Japan, they're trying to make me the Hit Queen," Rose told USA Today Sports. "I'm not trying to take anything away from Ichiro -- he's had a Hall of Fame career -- but the next thing you know, they'll be counting his high school hits.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 25 September 2016 13:58 (nine years ago)

Fernandez was killed Sunday morning after a boat crash in Miami Beach, the team announced.

The 24-year-old Fernandez was one of at least three people killed in the early morning collision. He announced on Instagram recently that he and his girlfriend were expecting a child, Local 10 reported.

Chief Petty Officer Nyxolyno Cangemi told The Associated Press that a Coast Guard patrol boat spotted an overturned boat at 3:30 a.m. on a jetty near Government Cut. The bodies were discovered a short time later.

Because the boat was on a jetty, the Coast Guard notified Miami-Dade police, which turned the investigation over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Fernandez was on a 32-foot vessel that had a "severe impact" with a jetty, said Lorenzo Veloz of the Fish Commission. A news conference was planned for later Sunday morning.

Casey McGehee and Fernandez were teammates in Miami in 2014 and half of 2015. The news hit him every bit as hard as it hit Iglesias. Fernandez formed a special bond with McGehee’s son Mack, who has cerebral palsy.

“The toughest part for me is having to tell my son what happened,” McGehee said. “A lot of people, they don’t really know how to treat Mack. For some reason, Jose had a heart for him. You get to the field, and it wasn’t like ‘Hey, Jose, do you want to keep an eye on him?’ Jose would come and grab him, and they were together from the time they got on the field to the time my wife came to pick him up.

“I think that really says a lot about what was truly in his heart, and what kind of guy he was.”

i didn't get around to this my piece but i always felt like... a certain urgency in watching jose. given his past TJ surgery and the sheer explosion of all his pitches i couldn't help but think about his elbow snapping again, even when he was in the midst of mowing some team down. watching him was like 98% exhilaration and 2% fear that it would all just be taken away again, maybe this time for good, but obviously his fucking death just does not feel real in any way shape or form.

i got to see him earlier this season vs the tigers from two rows behind home plate. he had one of those weird games where he was practically unhittable but when he did get touched the ball went a long way. he struck out 13 in 5.2 innings but also gave up 5 ER--i think it was the only time a loss went onto his record in a home start. needless to say, seeing him from that close, i literally have no idea how anyone ever got a hit off him, his breaking pitches seemed inconceivable

Jeff Passan:

This sounded bad. Bernal had ridden on a boat at night once, and it was terrifying. Not just the darkness, but the choppy waves from the rain earlier in the day and the threat of other boats and the objects obscured by the night.

“I told him it was a horrible idea,” Bernal said. “Do everything you can to get him off the boat. Do whatever you can to get him on land.”

... After Saturday’s game, Fernandez had asked a number of teammates to join him on the boat. One by one, they declined. And there they were Monday, back in uniform, the uniform he was supposed to be wearing, too, thinking that if not for the instinct that told them to say no, it could’ve been them.

Stanton's got 21 in 33 games by my count--gotta be one of the best stretches ever. Found a 24-in-32 stretch for Bonds in 2001, and I'm sure he had a couple more like that at some point that season. McGwire in '98, too, maybe Sosa.

the marlins have more good hitters than most people realize but the team is hysterical right now... the rotation is like sub-AAA and they're playing guys like mike aviles and tyler moore pretty much every day. he's leading the majors in the WAR over the second half for a team that should prob be nowhere near the playoff discussion in its current state. i think he has a great case.

There has been something different about him this spring, though, that has struck those around him. His team's president of baseball operations, Michael Hill, went so far as to punctuate his review of the 2017 edition of Giancarlo Stanton with three attention-getting letters: M-V-P.

"You'd be smart [to pick him]," Hill says. "There's a focus there that makes you really excited."

this is going to be an extremely unpopular opinion that i am probably 100% alone in but i don't want giancarlo to hit 61

qualx, Tuesday, 26 September 2017 04:04 (eight years ago)

i know it's extremely normie of me or w/e to even put stock into that number as opposed to bonds' record but i do tend to think of all the steroid records as at least a little fake, i don't really care about all the justifications statheads have come up with

and i DO want giancarlo to break the 'real' record but i'm never gonna quiet the part of my brain that's going NOT LIKE THIS

qualx, Tuesday, 26 September 2017 04:06 (eight years ago)

i extremely hate the great juicing of the ball and i think it was a horrible thing to happen

i'm aware that the ball has been tampered with before, but the extent to which it's changed The Home Run is ridiculous

usually when these sorts of changes happen it's to fix an extreme, not to create one. this may have an equal effect of the mound being lowered but those changes were made in completely different directions

not against making adjustments like these (at least if the commissioner is being transparent about it, which is another thing) but this is an adjustment that's setting new league-wide records etc. meanwhile they could've actually instituted changes to fix a real problem (the expanding strike zone), but they chose to go a route that drove the sport even more towards TTOs.

as long as rougned odor is suddenly hitting 30+ homers as a second basemen and still sucking, beating maris isn't going to mean what it should to me

qualx, Tuesday, 26 September 2017 04:14 (eight years ago)

i'm guessing there are arguments about what the run environment was like in 1961 and how records aren't real and everything is BS and i'm willing to hear those, i'm just corny

and i really hope the ball gets a little less juiced at some point

Andy K, Friday, 29 September 2017 18:09 (eight years ago)

out of curiosity is there like legit proof that the ball is juiced vs. just a change in batting coaching (aka: it's ok to sstrike out 200 times just try to hit 30 homers; launch angle training; etc)? was talking abt it with a pal tonight and realized neither of us knew if there was any solid evidence, it seems like it'd be pretty easy to prove

flippy bard (Will M.), Tuesday, 3 October 2017 00:02 (eight years ago)

there is interesting evidence but not necessarily incontrovertible proof, search the ringer or fangraphs for some good articles

k3vin k., Tuesday, 3 October 2017 00:09 (eight years ago)

the entire league did not suddenly switch swinging strategy at a specific point in the middle of 2015

the lindbergh/lichtman study is absolutely enough for me. the statcast era has given us everything we need to know to see the difference and weed out other variables.

has there been a league-wide shift in hitting philosophy since then? yeah, but i don't think that would've happened if it wasn't clear there was a new ball to work with. it presented a new opportunity to get offensive value out of struggling, aging hitters, and teams have taken advantage.

qualx, Tuesday, 3 October 2017 00:25 (eight years ago)

i don't think it's actually possible in our human reality for this degree of HR% increase to happen in this short a span without a change to the ball, and i have a doctorate in baseball science
