Rany Jazayerli:

How unusual is Joe Maddon’s approach to defensive positioning? We had to invent a new metric to fully appreciate it — and to understand what it might mean for the Cubs’ World Series hopes.

a version of this could be posted every year, or at least every year that a clearly dominant team is in the postseason, but it's still worth reading for anyone who might assume that the best team will probably win the world series:

deadspin came up with a good description of tragically injured cub kyle schwarber: a fun strong home-run chub who mashes magnificent taters

Game 3 time on Monday has been announced it will be at 6:30 pacific

Bee OK, Friday, 7 October 2016 20:17 (nine years ago)

That line in the Cameron piece about how the Cubs probably don't feel lucky to have to go through Cueto and Bumgarner...I mean, too bad! I'm sure they're not griping about it.

Here's my argument in favor of "tournament baseball" - the team that plays better than the other team in a particular game usually wins that game.

timellison, Friday, 7 October 2016 20:53 (nine years ago)

System, Saturday, 8 October 2016 00:01 (nine years ago)

the team that plays better than the other team in a particular game usually wins that game.

i'd agree with that if you mean "usually" as in like 51% of the time.

i mean, let's say both team's starting pitchers dominate. they don't allow any hits or runs. until the 9th inning. in the 8th inning, Team A gets two singles, then a home run. They're up 3-0. Team B bats in the bottom of the 9th. The first guy hits a home run. Then there are two singles, and then the ending ends. They lose 3-1. Both teams end up with 3 hits (2 singles and a home run). Did team A really play better?

versions of that happen all the time. sure there are plenty of games where one team makes a few terrible errors and the starting pitcher obviously doesn't have it. but there's a reason that even division-winning teams still lose 40% of the time, and it's not because they forget how to be good at baseball during 2/5 of their games

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Saturday, 8 October 2016 00:07 (nine years ago)

this means the Giants are going to win in 3, right?

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 October 2016 00:38 (nine years ago)

Let's Go Giants!

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 October 2016 00:59 (nine years ago)

i'm not as high stressed tonight.

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 October 2016 00:59 (nine years ago)

one and done drove me up the wall. best of five is so much better.

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 October 2016 00:59 (nine years ago)

probably would have been out?

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 October 2016 01:18 (nine years ago)

not what is suppose to happen

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 October 2016 01:19 (nine years ago)

i understand trying to go and all that but i felt like they could have waited. by rushing it they threw him out pretty easily.

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 October 2016 01:24 (nine years ago)

this camera angle is driving me crazy. how long have the Cubs played here?

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 October 2016 01:33 (nine years ago)

couple of weeks now

aaaaaaaauuuuuuuuu (melting robot) (WilliamC), Saturday, 8 October 2016 01:33 (nine years ago)

The angle and framing are really bad and weird, I wonder why. Doesn't usually look like this.

Immediate Follower (NA), Saturday, 8 October 2016 01:37 (nine years ago)

i understand that the whole world outside Giants fans are for the Cubs. but do the announcers have to be this over the top about it?

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 October 2016 01:42 (nine years ago)

it's ridiculous

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 October 2016 01:42 (nine years ago)

that was bad, should not happen in this type of game.

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 October 2016 01:55 (nine years ago)

i thought that 3 - 1 pitch was a home run

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 October 2016 02:01 (nine years ago)

I've got the classic thing where my stream is lagging so I hear my upstairs neighbor yell YES and then see the Baez HR 30 seconds later

Immediate Follower (NA), Saturday, 8 October 2016 03:30 (nine years ago)

Man I thought cueto had two perfect pitches before that that Baez somehow laid off. Great at bat

Spottie, Saturday, 8 October 2016 03:33 (nine years ago)

You look at the swing Baez put on that pitch and you have to believe that is a guy that might grow into a bigger power hitter in the next couple years.

earlnash, Saturday, 8 October 2016 03:35 (nine years ago)

They've been saying that for a few years though

Immediate Follower (NA), Saturday, 8 October 2016 03:37 (nine years ago)

He's still only 23. I'm impressed he cut his K's down so much in a season.

earlnash, Saturday, 8 October 2016 03:38 (nine years ago)

Edwin Encarnacion looked like the second coming of Sheffield when he came up with the Reds, but he never was able to put it all together until he was 29.

earlnash, Saturday, 8 October 2016 03:39 (nine years ago)

He is getting better for sure.

Immediate Follower (NA), Saturday, 8 October 2016 03:41 (nine years ago)

i'm neutral re: the matchup but this is a great baseball game

call all destroyer, Saturday, 8 October 2016 03:43 (nine years ago)

Dodged a big bullet there, I thought it was gone.

earlnash, Saturday, 8 October 2016 03:44 (nine years ago)

Busters shot looked gone no doubt

Spottie, Saturday, 8 October 2016 03:48 (nine years ago)

the Giants had their chances

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 October 2016 03:49 (nine years ago)

they only need one out of two

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 October 2016 03:49 (nine years ago)

Busters shot i thought was out too

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 October 2016 03:49 (nine years ago)

Ball just doesn't carry there at night like it does during the day. There was one other earlier in the game that looked good off the bat to die in the track.

Bee OK, Sunday, 9 October 2016 01:13 (nine years ago)

Nah, entire bullpen had problems all season long. Even when Giants were doing fine, it was in spite of it.

It was the 22nd worst bullpen of the season. Only Rangers had a worst bullpen and made the playoffs.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 9 October 2016 01:45 (nine years ago)

@JeffPassan
If my Baseball Reference search is right, Travis Wood hit the first postseason HR for a reliever since Rosy Ryan in the 1924 World Series.

Andy K, Sunday, 9 October 2016 01:49 (nine years ago)

i would rather not even use Casilla

Bee OK, Sunday, 9 October 2016 02:11 (nine years ago)

now or 2010, 2012, 2014,

qualx, Sunday, 9 October 2016 03:02 (nine years ago)

the bullpen did fine outside that one pitch. it was Samardzia that lost this game and to the opposite pitchers base hit.

Bee OK, Sunday, 9 October 2016 03:02 (nine years ago)

fine outside that one pitch

story of my life

Spottie, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 06:38 (nine years ago)

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 11 October 2016 06:40 (nine years ago)

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 01:01 (nine years ago)

Buster sacrifice. Span doubled lead off belt moved him to 3rd

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 01:08 (nine years ago)

Span gotta be safe here

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 01:34 (nine years ago)

Safe, but still wow.

aaaaaaaauuuuuuuuu (melting robot) (WilliamC), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 01:34 (nine years ago)

i wonder if Baez practices that.

if there has to be a game 5, how busy will the medical team at Wrigley be?

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 01:35 (nine years ago)

(for the faithful, i mean)

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 01:35 (nine years ago)

Wow that tag amazing Baez

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 01:39 (nine years ago)

Vasgersian wondering why various Cubs rate stats over the course of these 3.5 games have not been in line with those of the regular season.

Leave it to the pitchers to hit

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:07 (nine years ago)

man, gotta throw Moore a waster on 0-2. maybe skittish about a wild pitch

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:12 (nine years ago)

i can't watch this game because i will spend every minute the cubs aren't winning screaming

qualx, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:13 (nine years ago)

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:15 (nine years ago)

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:17 (nine years ago)

David Ross adding to the Ex-Red factor this post season tonight.

earlnash, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:18 (nine years ago)

if it isn't the cubs or the dodgers in the WS i'm lost

qualx, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:18 (nine years ago)

that's in. HR.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:28 (nine years ago)

Ugh can't believe no one scored

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:30 (nine years ago)

Looks like it hit the top part of the wall to me, but I don't know what the rule is there with that rail.

earlnash, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:30 (nine years ago)

Yeah first replay I thought it landed on the other side of the rail, but it didn't. My bad.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:31 (nine years ago)

I'd figure hitting the black rail and going back is an HR and hitting the white top of the wall is in play, but stadiums have weird rules sometimes.

earlnash, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:31 (nine years ago)

Some stupid ass running by pence nice there

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:33 (nine years ago)

Connor 'Mel Ott' Gillaspie

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:34 (nine years ago)

God the shit you hear from those booths

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:38 (nine years ago)

Also someone should come up with pitcher's statlines from the nlds vs dh statlines from the alds.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:39 (nine years ago)

Not as bad as Reynolds at least

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:40 (nine years ago)

who is?

Bochy may be morphing physically into infamous Babe Ruth portrayer William Bendix

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:40 (nine years ago)

smoltz > reynolds is what I'm saying

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:48 (nine years ago)

Smoltz: "If you drop a golf ball in Hunter Pence's hair, you are not getting it out"

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:56 (nine years ago)

Otm tho

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:57 (nine years ago)

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 03:06 (nine years ago)

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 03:22 (nine years ago)

Brillant brillant stuff by Moore. Now to the 9th.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 03:23 (nine years ago)

Also love how mlb.tv let have you KNBR while watching the TBS feed.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 03:23 (nine years ago)

Moore pretty much doing this seasons Vogelsong.

earlnash, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 03:27 (nine years ago)

Giants are pretty much death by a thousand cuts and this stadium with the pitching kinda neutralizes big power teams in a short series.

earlnash, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 03:29 (nine years ago)

They are built for this big place in the same way Herzog's Cardinals teams were built to play on Astroturf.

earlnash, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 03:30 (nine years ago)

La neuvième manche, putain.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 03:40 (nine years ago)

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 03:55 (nine years ago)

Omg what are they doing

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 03:56 (nine years ago)

qualx, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 03:56 (nine years ago)

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 03:57 (nine years ago)

does romo always giggle when he fucks up? i guess when you have 3 rings it doesn't matter much

qualx, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 03:58 (nine years ago)

His coping mechanism

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 03:58 (nine years ago)

he had that "ooooooh the teacher caught yooou!!" look on his face except the teacher was bruce bochy and there was no one else there

qualx, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 03:59 (nine years ago)

Wow!

earlnash, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 04:07 (nine years ago)

Un real

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 04:07 (nine years ago)

Was not really rooting for either team, but I did want to see a game 5. Can't believe how predictably bad the Giants were in the 9th though, after 8 incredible innings by Moore.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 04:09 (nine years ago)

They are who we thought they were

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 04:10 (nine years ago)

Ouch.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 04:10 (nine years ago)

Managing the pitching/bullpen has been one of the Bochy/Righetti's forte, so much that they were confident about trading for Moore and paying good money to Samardzija. I don't know what they could have done to prevent his implosion, it does seem like since the end of August they have tried everything, I'm sure they'll have the ressources to fix this. They still have a lot of very good elements, and they gave us great moments this season.

Rooting for the Nats now, because you know.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 04:16 (nine years ago)

Also the Cubs are really really good, jesus.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 04:16 (nine years ago)

i know anything can happen in 7 games blah blah but it's really hard to imagine the nats beating this team

qualx, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 04:22 (nine years ago)

dodgers maybe

qualx, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 04:22 (nine years ago)

slept from the 6th inning on here, of course

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 06:44 (nine years ago)

i'm sorry, Bee OK

at least you don't hafta watch that CF camera angle from Wrigley again.

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 06:45 (nine years ago)

@SamMillerBB Oct 10

Another manager wishing he'd brought in Zach Britton

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 07:29 (nine years ago)

I went to bed early with a headache last night so this was a pleasant surprise when I woke up. Watching the ninth inning now, I'd blame the SF defense before their relievers. There were a lot of ground balls past diving infielders, plus the botched double play.

Immediate Follower (NA), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 10:43 (nine years ago)

Baez was obviously the MVP for this series

can't imagine watching that as a Giants fan. brutal. in obvious hindsight, felt like you needed to leave one of those relievers in there. Like they would each throw 3 balls right away... needed to settle in a bit. props to the cubbies who I will hate all postseason & until i perish from the earth.

bnw, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 17:13 (nine years ago)

i would have left law in but whatever

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 17:16 (nine years ago)

Should have put Cueto in for an inning, ha.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 17:17 (nine years ago)

I was kind of looking forward to a game 5 and the Cueto/Bumgarner two-headed monster taking on the Cubs (obv. MadBum was coming in to save that if they had a lead).

Really only Zobrist's ball was hit hard in that inning, so yeah, maybe Bochy should have left one of his guys in to get settled.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 17:46 (nine years ago)

This bit from Schoenfield's column really blew my mind:

We've never seen this happen before -- at least not in the postseason. Only three times in playoff history had a team rallied from a three-run deficit in the ninth inning, and all three of those games, amazingly, were in 1986. Those teams (the Angels in Game 4 of the ALCS, the Red Sox in Game 5 of the ALCS and the Mets over the Astros in Game 6 of the NLCS) all needed extra innings to pull off a win.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 17:48 (nine years ago)

this would hurt so much worse for me if i hadn't just gone through the NBA finals
