I'm fine with either team winning really, but bcz their haters are particularly annoying I'm behind Kershaw and Puig especially. Expect 6 or 7 games, I'd put the Dodgers at 53-54% to take it.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Monday, 23 October 2017 16:36 (seven years ago)

Except for Justin Turner's hair, there's nothing about the Dodgers I don't like--Kershaw and Jensen are the best, Puig is fascinating, and they were a great (and weird) story this year. But I'll be rooting for the Astros; their blow-it-up plan actually worked, and right on--even ahead of--schedule. (On the Toronto call-in station, the same idea was tossed around all year for the Blue Jays. Which is funny, because no one in Toronto would have the patience to endure two or three 100-loss seasons.) And I literally love that Jose Altuve literally loves Justin Verlander.

What we can say is that great hitting teams beat great pitching teams, unless they don't. We also can say that so far in this postseason, the Astros' offense has looked beatable at times, while the Dodgers' pitching and defense has more than held up to its regular-season form.

some real bold claims in there

Currently (Karl Malone), Monday, 23 October 2017 17:57 (seven years ago)

I like Justin Turner's hair and the Houston Astros, I don't really care who wins, I'm just rooting for a Game 7, good luck everyone

i'm trying to figure this out... i think bill did his own calculation wrong for the astros? i'm getting 169.

a. 55 years, no WS = 110
b. 12 years since 2005 = 12
c. 19 + 9 + 8 + 5 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 47

this leaves 43 extra points he's throwing in. looks like he's forgetting they made it to the WS in 2005, which would account for it exactly (weird, because he specifically mentions it).

qualx, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 04:36 (seven years ago)

I think you're right. Cleveland and LA probably should score higher then the Astros.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 08:40 (seven years ago)

Voted Dodgers in six.

(mostly lurking here cause I'm only renewing my interest in the game)

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 09:35 (seven years ago)

(xposts) I didn't look at the numbers, but I'm sure you're right, he probably miscalculated. I think he said something about incorporating an adjustment for things like the flood Houston just went through--not sure if that figured in.

I'm sure it's a regular thing if you follow the Dodgers throughout the year, but thought it was pretty great watching Kershaw with Koufax in the stands. The cutaways to Lady Gaga, they didn't resonate the same way.

clemenza, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 12:02 (seven years ago)

Astros last night didn't look like a team that had a chance to win a single game in this series, but that might just be Kershaw being Kershaw. The movement on those pitches!

too bad Kershaw didn't get extra rest tho, given his postseason history

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 12:57 (seven years ago)

Such a ridiculous (as Bouton once called them) second-guess first-guess. Kershaw could've had six more lousy-to-mediocre post-season starts, and if he'd pitched well the next time out, you would have been there with your line all ready. Starting him in game #2 would have worked out fine; if the Dodgers are going to win, they're going to win. But again, this is a team that won 104 games with Kershaw out for many weeks; they do not live and die with Kershaw.

On Saturday, Oct. 2, 1926, Babe Ruth slid into second base in the third inning of the first game of the World Series -- and ripped the seat of his pants.

In the Yankee Stadium bleachers, an 11-year-old boy attending his first major league game, burst into laughter. "We roared! The little trainer, Doc Woods, raced out with a needle and thread, and the Babe just stood there grinning while they stitched up his trousers right on the field!"

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 18:14 (seven years ago)

It took Los Angeles just 107 pitches to face 30 batters. Usually, when you see low pitch counts and quick innings, it’s because a team was overly aggressive, swinging at pitches early in counts and making quick outs. In Game 1, though, the Astros seemingly made it easy on the Dodgers by just not swinging at strikes.

Obviously, there’s no great gameplan for Kershaw, Morrow, and Jansen. You’re going to lose most nights you face those guys. Kershaw’s the best pitcher alive. Jansen might be the best reliever alive now. Morrow has turned into a dominant reliever pumping 100 mph gas. I don’t want to suggest that the Astros’ failure was simply because they had a poor approach: those guys dominate regardless of what their opponents try.

But, with all due respect to the Dodgers for executing, I have to say that I don’t really know why the Astros hitters decided to take so many pitches down the middle.

On the night, Houston took 27 called strikes. One out of every four pitches prompted umpire Phil Cuzzi to his right arm. And most of them weren’t exactly controversial calls....

I guess you could make the point that Miller being a setup guy most of his career, really it wasn't that big a change. Jansen is like Chapman in that he has pretty much only been a ninth inning or bust guy.

It seemed though that he was throwing 93-95 on the old radar guns which seem to measure a couple miles slower than the ones now.

Then again, the Astros got some good hitters and they got a single up the middle and connected on a fastball. It happens.

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 28 October 2017 21:10 (seven years ago)

i don't know what the ramifications are with the union-- manfred may not have been able to instantly suspend gurriel without an appeal process. i suspect that the five games next year was a compromise to get the appeal waived.

it's still, of course, bullshit. and "He also didn't want to punish the rest of the Astros players for the behavior of one individual" is a terrible rationale. had gurriel instead punched an umpire, no one would be worried about 'punishing the other astros'. anyway it's not like they would have had to play without a first baseman; having someone else in the lineup is hardly an unbearable burden

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 October 2017 22:38 (seven years ago)

Didn't Charlie Morton used to be kinda rolly polly when he played for the Pirates? He looks really skinny now, but I thought he used to be kinda paunchy.

mookieproof, Sunday, 29 October 2017 01:36 (seven years ago)

Alex Wood hella impressive as well.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 29 October 2017 02:08 (seven years ago)

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 29 October 2017 02:08 (seven years ago)

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 29 October 2017 02:10 (seven years ago)

Looked like it just didn't cut in and held up in the middle but down. Springer kinda golfed it out.

earlnash, Sunday, 29 October 2017 02:10 (seven years ago)

It wasn't a terrible pitch as much as he just struck it perfect. Some dudes can just hit that low one really well. Brandon Phillips is really good at the golf power stroke. Some guys can hit that high pitch.

earlnash, Sunday, 29 October 2017 02:12 (seven years ago)

i have the sound off but feel confident that someone mentioned 'dropping the bat head'

mookieproof, Sunday, 29 October 2017 02:12 (seven years ago)

Actually didn't hear it this one, but I have heard that said on that swing before many a time.

That's the thing in baseball, you can make a pretty good pitch, but if the guy guesses right and makes good connection - you are still screwed.

earlnash, Sunday, 29 October 2017 02:14 (seven years ago)

lol Bregman again

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 29 October 2017 02:17 (seven years ago)

It's not quite Brooks Robinson or Craig Nettles, but it's up there in playoff performances.

earlnash, Sunday, 29 October 2017 02:18 (seven years ago)

Houston's infield is pretty impressive with Bregman, Correa and Altuve. I keep thinking a team like them or maybe Boston is going to drop something to the Reds and take Votto.

earlnash, Sunday, 29 October 2017 02:21 (seven years ago)

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 29 October 2017 03:23 (seven years ago)

The Astros' bullpen is a hot dumpster fire of suck. McCullers and Verlander will have to be Johnson/Schilling in 2001 for them to win the series.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 29 October 2017 03:27 (seven years ago)

Giles is making Aroldis from last season's WS look like Mariano

nomar, Sunday, 29 October 2017 03:37 (seven years ago)

Devenski had a decent inning and Peacock will have more availability. Morton will not be starting again and will, at some point, have some availability. I don't know who else they might rely on - maybe Harris and Musgrove can eat up some outs when necessary.

timellison, Sunday, 29 October 2017 04:22 (seven years ago)

At a poker game, so was only able to half-watch tonight. Looks like we'll get a seventh game. Hoping that Altuve and Correa come up big the rest of the way.

clemenza, Sunday, 29 October 2017 05:07 (seven years ago)

I'm surprised more people aren't criticizing Hinch for pulling Morton when he did, after only 70 something pitches. The new playoff norm (or so it seems) of the last few years only works if you've got a parade of lights out guys in the bullpen you can bring in. Hinch didn't have a single reliever who could have pitched better than Morton in that moment, unless he was already thinking ahead and wanted to save Morton's arm for relief duty later in the series.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 29 October 2017 10:04 (seven years ago)

for some reason during that bellinger AB i was thinking intensely about how exciting it must be for mchugh to be pitching in the world series, childhood dreams and all that bullshit. but really roleplaying it hard from the perspective of his old high school pals who he had lost touch with watching the game together in their hometown bar, rooting for him, telling people "hey, that's collin mchugh! hometown hero collin mchugh!", etc. anyway, deep in the middle of that bellinger hit the HR and i saw mchugh's body instantly shudder and the fake hometown bar of my dreams went deadly silent.

i think all of this is happening because i didn't really choose a team to root for. you have to choose, but i tried to "choose" a bullshit desire of general entertainment

Kinda hilarious that in the age of 12 man pitching staffs, both teams are stretching out their 4th starters in relief (both of whom have been rocked in this game), presumably because they don't have anyone better who can pitch right now.

Thanks man <3

Don't want to be the annoying new guy (I'll start a thread for that one day that can be easily ignored or something) but this is helpful, I've enjoyed this season in silence so much.

srsly :)

I've watched the Dutch team, live, when I was yougn w/ my dad. They're still world top ten imo, but back then MLB was just impossible to watch over here. I'm totally on board now, gobbling up all yr good posts about it :)

the dutch were one of my fav teams in the world baseball classic - didn't realize how many great players they have (and have had) - andrelton simmons, xander, jansen! fuck yeah! also andruw jones and blyleven

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:47 (seven years ago)

just fyi

na (NA), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:47 (seven years ago)

Honkbal <3

Omg NA thanks for that thread!

And omg KM! That's so cool to read. They've a great team, yeah (though it's mostly Curacao, and I hate Dutch press celebrates them as Dutch when they win, and denounces them not as Dutch but as 'Curacaoans' when we lose... fucking colonialism man). Great bunch of lads though. My faves when I was young were Robert Eenhoorn (Yankees/Angels/Mets), Rikkert Faneyte (Giants, Rangers, Reds) and of course Andruw Jones, who did a lot for the sport o'er here. Jansen doing baseball a huge favor over here right now, too tbh.

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 21:03 (seven years ago)

Pretty sure we will see these two teams competing in the WS over the next few years, same for the Indians and Cubs.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 23:20 (seven years ago)

Home/road split for Game 7s dead-even: 19-19.

I still more or less want the Astros to win, but there's a big part of me that would love to see Darvish stick it to them. Of all the possible punishments you can mete out to Gurriel, that would be the most meaningful of all: the possibility that his actions inspired Darvish to (quietly and without any fuss whatsoever--he's been great about it) pitch the game of his life.

clemenza, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 23:25 (seven years ago)

I am rooting for that outcome, and quietly terrified at the very real possibility that Gurriel will come up in a key situation and hit a grand slam against Darvish. That would be so 2017

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 23:32 (seven years ago)

I have fan duties to hate the dodgers but I'd be fine w either outcome. hoping for a classic is all.

Spottie, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 23:36 (seven years ago)

i'm not gonna root against the astros because of gurriel, or him for trying to win the game. the blame for the whole situation is on manfred.

qualx, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 23:50 (seven years ago)

(i mean the blame is obviously on gurriel but it was on manfred to punish him in a way that didn't ruin the astros a little bit for everyone)

qualx, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 23:51 (seven years ago)

beautiful start.

― ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, November 1, 2017 10:08 PM (nine minutes ago)

wait, you mean when kershaw came up with 2 outs and no one on? you'd really pinch hit for him there?

k3vin k., Thursday, 2 November 2017 02:18 (seven years ago)

In any other world series, seeing a pitcher like Darvish collapse over two games would probably be the story.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 2 November 2017 02:18 (seven years ago)

kershaw had a .245 OBP this year. you're going to take your best pitcher out of the game to bat a guy who is a slightly better hitter in that spot?

k3vin k., Thursday, 2 November 2017 02:19 (seven years ago)

two outs and no one on certainly makes it defensible, but down five runs and with 10 other pitchers available, i'm not sure

probably would have liked to get more than one batter out of morrow, as well

mookieproof, Thursday, 2 November 2017 02:21 (seven years ago)

I thought that was strange too, using Morrow to face one batter with two outs and the bases empty.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 2 November 2017 02:25 (seven years ago)

yeah i highly highly doubt the math supports taking kershaw out there for andre fuckin ethier

So the "bullpen" strategy for the Astros is every starter on the roster plus Devenski. It's a refreshing change from the past few years of playoff strategies, that's for sure.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 2 November 2017 03:27 (seven years ago)

k3vin k., Thursday, 2 November 2017 03:54 (seven years ago)

I'd go back further to the Giants' use of Lincecum in the 2012 playoffs.

Of course the use of starters in relief in the WS goes back forever, but that was the first time I remember a team not trusting one of their starters to actually start and finding him a role in the bullpen instead, rather than leaving him if the roster altogether.

clemenza, Thursday, 2 November 2017 04:12 (seven years ago)

Darvish's starts were the the only games in the series where the Dodgers were never really in it. It almost makes you question the need to add an "ace" starter at the trade deadline, especially when you already have a great bullpen and starter innings are less significant in the playoffs than ever before. Then again, you you have the Astros and Verlander and the fact that they just won the World Series by hoarding starters, so who knows.

yeah and he does weird stuff after catching pop outs or when is just alone in the field, it's worth paying attention too if you are a fan of The Springer's ways.

in tribute of the astros, i will now post a series of gifs from when they were absolutely god-awful like four years ago

this is a great thread

qualx, Thursday, 2 November 2017 04:35 (seven years ago)

they were so bad

qualx, Thursday, 2 November 2017 04:36 (seven years ago)

Darvish’s garbage performance in 3+ innings basically cost them 3 games.

In the end, I think it made a lot of other stuff regarding who-pitches-when moot. The Dodgers need at least one decent start from him.

god i wish the o's would do an astros

qualx, Thursday, 2 November 2017 04:44 (seven years ago)

I mean the O's lost 90 games six years in a row, loaded up with young players, then suddenly become consistent contenders over the 2012-16 span, led by those young stars and canny cheap pickups, so ... they kind of did? And it worked? It just didn't win them a World Series. But that comes down to luck. (And leaving Zach Britton on the bench in a tie game.)

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 2 November 2017 05:00 (seven years ago)

yeah but each one of those 90-loss seasons started with the apparent delusion that they'd randomly turn it around that year. i don't think they actually traded a player when that player had decent value aside from erik bedard? other than that it was just a series of savvy moves from consecutive GMs that turned out as well as they could've, and a committed manager. they never actually started drafting well, they continued to ignore the international market, their minor league development never actually improved. they still signed the hardys of the roster to unreasonable extensions rather than trading them when they had value and getting younger.

the astros very intentionally tanked in order to build a powerful young core. they executed about as well as they could, but they went all in and didn't leave any wiggle room. cubs too.

i think every fan of a non-playoff team is thinking "i wish my team would do that" right now

qualx, Thursday, 2 November 2017 05:18 (seven years ago)

we'll be saying the same thing about the white sox in 2020

2021: white sox vs phillies in the world series.

Yes, I went to sleep in the 7th inning of Game 7, but it worked out; I couldn't get a good stream all night anyway. (Sucks to be old and poor.)

Verlander and Beltran have rings now. That's beautiful.

I suppose so, except I'm not sure I 'like' Verlander, and Beltran was no factor so yay, his teammates got him 'a ring' (you know, pretty randomly in a tournament). I'm sure he'd rather have someone fix Puerto Rico. But yay for Altuve, Correa, Josh Reddick's booty.

otoh: That's the first world series in the history of Texas.

However... I'm happy for Kevin Goldstein, the Astros' director of pro scouting, with whom I once had a nice conversation about Serge Gainsbourg.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 2 November 2017 11:31 (seven years ago)

^^ That's good stuff.

This was underwhelming, though I probably expected too much given the previous six games. Springer was a no brainer for MVP.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 2 November 2017 11:55 (seven years ago)

@TonyPaul1984
And there it is: JV hoisting World Series trophy. Let's not forget, he pledged his entire postseason share (as much as $400K) to charity.

Yeah, I remember Luhnow trying to hire a bunch of BP alumni and other various statheads from anywhere he could when he started in Houston. This really is a huge feather in the cap of the stathead crowd.

qualx, Friday, 3 November 2017 02:24 (seven years ago)

still hard to feel bad for the dodgers i guess

i'm getting very sick of people handwaving away their beyond-00s-yankees level salary with "well most of the value came from cheaper guys" or w/e. money like that means freedom to fail spectacularly. most other teams would've been DEVASTATED by those AGon/kazmir/ethier contracts, for years.

qualx, Friday, 3 November 2017 02:33 (seven years ago)

man, imagine how Darvish feels

well Kevin Goldstein lives in Dekalb, he can take two

(I tot missed that KG was promoted to special assistant to the GM recently)

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 3 November 2017 21:42 (seven years ago)

fun fact: Mike Fiers pitched the most innings for Houston this year; left off the postseason roster.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 5 November 2017 01:49 (seven years ago)

...I'm guessing this is the first time a team whose most frequent regular-season starting pitcher had a 5.22 ERA won the World Series.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 5 November 2017 01:55 (seven years ago)

prob a smart move honestly there was never a moment in the postseason when youd even think of pitching mike fiers but you need to eat innings in the reg

johnny crunch, Sunday, 5 November 2017 01:57 (seven years ago)

By Game 5 (?) Hinch couldn't even think of pitching Ken Giles.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 5 November 2017 02:08 (seven years ago)

i mean that is true also

johnny crunch, Sunday, 5 November 2017 02:12 (seven years ago)

there was a lengthy shot of mike fiers leaning on the dugout railing at some point

(i wonder how many people can recognize mike fiers)

Brewers fans can

"Maybe one of these days we won't fail..."

Says the man that has made 129 million playing baseball with over 100 million more to go on his guaranteed contract.

It will be interesting to see how both the Dodgers and Astros do in the next couple of seasons. Houston has a similar look to Chicago did last year, where you think they 'could' have another step of improvement still to come.
