Here's the rules:
• total of 5 keepers
• 2 of which must be 27, 28 or 29 yrs old
• another 2 players 26 or under
• one final keeper that can be either (basically anyone under the age of 30)
• age is based on that year's opening date (May 29, this year)
• for a player to be keep-eligible he must have been drafted on draft day by your team or traded to you by a team that drafted him. that means:
• free agent/waiver pick-ups cannot be kept
• if you have less than 5 keepers, you will get an extra draft pick at the end of the draft.

oh yeah that reminds me! the ages on my spreadsheet are not always 100% accurate! they were originally based on opening day of whatever year i started it, and players added later are based on THAT year's opening day, so since it changes slightly every year, they might not be 100% accurate. if you're unsure, google your own players. i'll actually unfilter the players marked as "old".

or maybe just unfilter everyone 30 or less, if they're marked 30 and too old jsut google thme to confirm it's true

I just blasted thru the whole keeper-eligible list and made some changes, mostly players born in march/april had messed up birthdates. ages across the board went down, and a few players became "keeper eligible" once i fixed it. have a look again if you only looked once! omar you can keep degrom too!

just putting this out there – if anyone with a young arm (Martinez, Syndergaard, etc) are interested in making a swap once the season starts, let me know. i'm going to try to address my keeper pitching issues in the draft, but i'm not crazy about my options (or the competition for young guys i'll think i might be facing).

i don't get it - why join the league if you don't like the whole keeper thing??

I've never done a keeper league to be honest. I just started playing fantasy again after a very long break! Trade me a <26 keeper and I'll promise not to stage a coup to regain league commissioner powerz.

I was losing it when Aaron Judge nearly got to me in the first round (picking 11th!). He seemed like a clear top three pick, taking keeper eligibility into account.

Yeah knowing that, I'd have taken him over Kluber but Kluber was ranked #1 of all eligible players.

TBF Kershaw, Kluber, Scherzer & Votto were the only four guy I was going to target above a young SP.

and guess i should have made extra sure the rules/settings were understood by the new teams before we got to the draft.
when we first went to a keeper format (which i love), i didn't like that someone might be able to keep a Trout or Kershaw for their entire career. didn't seem fair to keep so many elite players out of reach. and since irl most players hit free agency by the time they've hit 30, i thought the age cut-off was a good way to go. and also 30 is a nice, round, easy to remember number. as far as the age brackets go, i like it because it A) prevents people from bunching up a crew of similar aged guys and B) it forces teams to plan for the career progression of it's younger picks – i wanted more thought to go into team than just having a bucket of under-30 guys you can hang onto. almost like when a guy hits 27, you have to decide if that he's good enough to extend. an interesting side effects as well, seems to be that it has inspired some incredibly interesting trades over the years.
the only thing i'm not crazy about is when we calculate someone's age. we go by our leagues draft date, which can be a moving target. iirc only one guy has been effected by the phenomenon of their official age shifting due to this, so it hasn't really been a major problem.

Yeah, please don't mind me, I'm just trolling mostly.

I also have no idea who all the hot young prospects are so it's almost better I luckily backed into a few under 30 guys rather than intentionally chased a flash in the pan with an upper round pick.

if i'm in the running for first place, we can talk in a few months... i have at least two too many *young* young guys. and i probably am not the only one.

you're really going the long haul for Vlad, huh?

I picked him towards the end of the draft, so it was low risk. I figured I might as well stick him in the NA spot and see if they bring him up this year.

Years ago I drafted Strasburg before his debut, hung onto him all season long until he was called up, then kept him all throughout the year he was recovering from TJ surgery. If you've got the roster spot to burn (and NA isn't an active roster spot) and if the upside is high enough then why not?

in my case, because i lack the required patience.

sometimes i get the existential fear, like knowing how Ian Happ will age out of being a keeper just before i turn 50.

i think about how old my daughter will be when Albies gets there. (almost high school age) :`(

when you have players on your fantasy team who are playing against the team you're a fan of that day, do you bench them bc you want them to perform poorly against "your team," or do you play them to mitigate the negative feelings if they do well against "your team"?

i was going through my team to start mass-adding/dropping players (my team is a fuckin' mess and april's over, seems like the right time to panic) and I was looking at my keep-eligible players... all of a sudden I was like, where did this one guy go? I didn't drop him, but he isn't on my team... turns out Felipe Rivero is now Felipe Vazquez.

Anyway the point is I'm blowing up a bunch of my team (mostly pitching) and the upthread keeper spreadsheet is updated.

i had never heard of jakob junis before this year and now he's the savior of my pitching staff. same deal with matthew boyd, to a slightly lesser extent. thank goodness for those random pick-ups that pay off.

everyone on my pitching staff is finding their way to the DL. I have to admit i had a grim lol at the phrasing on CarMart's most recent update:

Note - the dropped players kinda gets updated when i have time/feel like it so it may not be 100% up to date at all times. i usually try to do it 1-2 times a month, it's only correct up to apr 30 right now (have some time today tho, might fix it later). yahoo doesn't have any handy way of getting the dropped players/dates/times so there's a lot of copy and paste and super annoying text editing.

i kind of get why same-day adds aren't allowed (though they were in my previous league), but the lack of same-day drops is cramping my style. jake lamb got taken off the DL today but i can't activate him because the player i dropped to make room for him won't leave my lineup until tomorrow. and i also apparently can't do any other transactions because i have a healthy player on the DL.

Yeah, this is annoying. This happened to me twice this week, with Edwin Encarnación and Justin Turner getting activated on a few hours notice before their games. Turner did nothing that night, but Edwin hit one out!

well... I've got Machado under 27, so I'll need 27/28 year-old or a young guy that's gonna be better than éloy jimenez (or more likely both). It's gonna have to be an unrefuseable deal at this point, so not a Chris "Sale", more of a Chris "Fair Deal". maybe i'm being premature, but i'm anticipating a sell-off as i don't think this team as it stands will break the top 3.

ugh, despite my solid keepers my season is lost. went in with a bunch of promising options for my 4th/5th slot (mookie/arenado/judge being the big 3)... and they're dropping like flies due to injury or sucking. Alex Reyes, probably Shohei Ohtani, Ken Giles, Rougned Odor... worst part is, now would be when I start dismantling my team for next year, but I don't really have anyone worth offering up. Not looking for for the ol' Trap.

Well anyway if you're making a run for it and anyone not named Aaron, Mookie or Nolan interests you, I could probably stand to upgrade Hosmer & Robles I guess? as my 2019 keepers at each age bracket, so get at me!

With only 13 teams in the league there are a lot of good unclaimed FA's and less incentive to make trades.

I think all of us are really protective of our keeper eligible guys and don't want to trade them away unless there's a really good chance of winning the league. These kinds of trades happened in the past when the top three teams were more closely bunched.

Yeah, the realy parity is in the middle... I just went from like 10th to 3rd in ~3 days.

I had the best ERA in the league coming into this game and Glasnow's 0.2 IP outing was enough to move my season ERA a full quarter of a run.

Frustrating year for me (every SP was injured at some point, etc.) but congrats bnw for dominating for most of the year and a well deserved win.
