League has been renewed along with everyone's teams (I think we are all returning).
Since the season starts March 20th – I've set our draft for Sunday March 17, 4pm (EST)
That is a weirdly early date, so if it's unworkable for too many people I'm open to moving to a later weekend after that first series in Japan.
Let's post our keeper picks here by the Monday before (11th).

There is also a petition to change add/drop transactions to same day – I'm fine with either, give your yay or nays below!

As always, the rules:

• total of 5 keepers
• 2 of which must be 27, 28 or 29 yrs old
• another 2 players 26 or under
• one final keeper that can be either (basically anyone under the age of 30)
• age is based on that year's opening date (May 29, this year)
• for a player to be keep-eligible he must have been drafted on draft day by your team or traded to you by a team that drafted him. that means:
• free agent/waiver pick-ups cannot be kept
• if you have less than 5 keepers, you will get an extra draft pick at the end of the draft
• have fun

by the way – last years' champ, BNW, ran away with it by a 14 point margin by the end of the season. can he do it again? (checks keepers)... not likely!

So – i went through all the changes this year with yahoo – and there's not much.
However, yahoo has gone and added all the top 30 prospects for every fucking team! so if you want to go ahead and add, i dunno, Bryson Brigman (the #28 prospect for the Miami Marlins) and stash him for a year or more – there is now nothing stopping you.

keeper decisions i struggled with
- not keeping willson contreras - probably not going to improve on him for catcher in the draft but i'd have to lose devers or torres to keep him (since he doesn't turn 27 until may) and they both seem potentially more valuable over the long term, especially since they're both so young
- not keeping jon gray - i keep expecting him to have a breakout season and his strikeout numbers can be gaudy when he's hot but he just hasn't been consistently good on the level of clevinger so i went with him instead

no probably not -- the IRL one is usually around 1pm Eastern. but then we usually hang out for a while and possibly do dinner (we even have ppl drive in from out of town usually). iiiiiif it were possible to do the draft later that day, like 7pm instead of 4pm, awesome, but honestly, i'll have my laptop and my cheatsheets and shit, i might just take a chill 45m break from being super-social and be only semi-social while drafting. no need to move the day/time unless it doesn't work for others!

we also have so many keepers/so few picks in that league, i just checked the timestamps for last year's draft, and it took... 45 minutes, lol. the league is only batters and team pitching (like team defense in football, kinda?) so it's 16 rounds, and 4 keepers, so really only 12 rounds (w/ 10 teams, and some teams have too few picks, so it ends up being... 115 total?)

we use fantrax btw, and it RULES, i'd almost recommend migrating but then we'd lose league history :(

took me a few years, but i finally found a trustworthy list of players birthdates (vs. just a "list of ages" that is never accurate) so hopefully my keeper sheets will never have an opening day age issue again! but do double-check and let me know if there are any mistakes!

If I had the time, I would scrape the baseball-reference site for their entire birthdate database and then use that as a master to run a SQL query against (or vlookup if in a spreadsheet).

this is something i'd definitely be interested in talking abt more! always made sense to me as the strongest teams will typically have the strongest keepers, so reverse order (and no snake) made the most sense for the next year's draft. is this something we could consider in the future? (i'm not just saying this because i finished in the basement for what feels like the first time ever!)

ya - we are all pretty awesome, but i would prefer to eliminate temptations wherever i can.
maybe what i might propose doing is going half way between random and standings-based draft order.
basically what i've been doing is putting team names into an online random list generator. what i could do is make it a weighted draft lottery – giving 13 entries to the 13th place team, 12 to 12th place and so on until 1st place getting one entry and then draw for the first pick using the rondo generator, then 2nd round etc.
a bit more work for me, but more fun and wouldn't 100% guarantee the first pick to tanky mcsitstrout.

i'm also thinking of a daily transaction limit of 3, to prevent anyone from going crazy with the same-day FA adds. that seem reasonable?

can't imagine needing more than 3, although i know yahoo has a safeguard against "churning" free agents, so like i can't pick up and drop 20 guys to put em all on WW. anyone you pick up and drop same day just goes back in the FA pool, iirc? but yeah still 3 per day seems fine!

My other league is AL only, 10 team auction and whenever a team auto drafts, it’s a train wreck. Seems to have no awareness of how to properly fill out a team.

The good:

I didn't draft too many pitchers like I do every year.
I'm set for 2021-2023 with a core of Bichette, Vlad, and Bregman.
The SS/3B controversy between Bregman and Chapman (Bregman had to make the switch to SS when I drafted Chapman) should push them both to excel, much like with Jeter and A-Rod.
I've been alternating three bad years with three good ones for a decade in this league which means I'm due this year.

The bad:

Relief core is weak.

My starters are fragile and/or might get eaten by Coors Field.

ISO* - Isometric. Basically a measurement of how similar their height is to their width and depth. Bartolo Colon has a high ISO; Billy Hamilton, not so much.
CT%* - Chrono Trigger% - how many endings they have completed of Squaresoft's seminal 1995 Japanese RPG Chrono Trigger.
wOBA* - Short for Wobble. Basically, how awkward their running looks. Good for telling if they are likely to attempt to steal second.
wRAA* - How many near-homers they hit, only to get caught at the warning track and make you yell WRAAAAAA.
RC* - Royal Crown - How much non-Pepsi, non-Coke cola they drink.
TOB* - Time on base - how many hours, minutes, and seconds they spend either safe on a base, or defending a base. Tends to be higher for infielders.
GB* - Good Boys - how many good boys they know.
GB%* - Good Boy Percentage - how many good boys they know, divided by how many good and bad boys they know.
FB* - Future Bank - how much money they have yet to earn.
FB%* - Future Bank % - how much money they have yet to earn, dividing by past bank + future bank. Good indicator of how satisfied vs. hungry they are
OPS+* - Occurences playing Sheeran's "+" - how many times the player has spun the triple platinum Ed Sheeran album from 2011.
P/PA* - Pen-Pineapple-Apple. A measure of how many second pens they are missing.
GDPR* - God Damn Power Rifles. A measure of their Lootscore in popular video game Destiny 2.
SL* - Sleazy lines. You know when you see a guy get a single and talk to the first basemen? Sometimes they're gross about it.
WAR* - what is it good for? Absolutely nothing.

i think it's supposed to be double-dipping for power hitters (triple-dipping if you count homers), kinda like QS and W for SP?

Ah but QS and W are not correlated, as evidenced by Jake DeGrom last year (and my team, I was towards the top in QS but only midpack in W). QS is kind of an equalizer for good pitchers on low-scoring teams or with bad luck (or both, eg: DeGrom). Kind of a way to hack advanced stats using traditional stats.

I'll do a regression on SLG & XBH just to make my point. It seems to be pretty much double-counting power, with a little bit of a correlation with NSB.

Yeah, having HR and SLG and XBH seems way too power-shifted, this isn't 1996-2002 anymore. Perhaps chicks dig WAR these days.

slightly, wins and QS only correlate 63% of the time. Not a dutiful correlation imho.

with two outliers (kersh and degrom, who any other year wd probably have more), all of the 20+ QS guys have at least 12 and up to 20 wins. Of all of the 15+ wins guys, only one didn't post double-digit QS (yarborough, because rays). it might have a leaguewide correlation of 63% (which still seems... pretty high to me!), but don't we only care about the most valuable players? (i use "most" loosely here, like, top 100 pitchers or something)

if WAR is available next season i would definitely be open to replacing Wins and XBH with it. however – i'm not sure it will be. right now they have it viewable with a bunch of other advanced stats - but i don't see it as an option for actual scoring stats.

Right, and reminder it's Will that's hung up on QS/W correlation, it is I who thinks XBH+HR+SLG seems superfluous towards power.

1) i have tim anderson and paul dejong, i don't need both. would trade one for a 2B, or maybe 1B, or maybe pitcher of some variety.
2) my potential keepers for 2020 include four 27-29 studs (arenado, judge, castillo, betts -- all 27 next year except arenado who will be 28) but my under 27 crop is (comparatively) weak (buxton, robles, wander franco, mcmahon). i'm definitely listening if someone finds themselves in the opposite situation, looking to shore up their mid-age keepers.

it's getting tight at the top again. i've got one of my clumps of starting pitching tonight but any or all of them could blow up badly (darvish at philly, stroman at atlanta, aaron sanchez at oakland ... not feeling super confident about any of those)

Now I know why I did better last year (ignored keepers) versus this year (keepers, most of them on the IL): it's a lot easier to ride the FA/waiver wire when you have open slots that aren't cock-blocked by dudes with ruptured testicles, etc.

i also enjoyed making a big, season-impacting trade! trades are fun! losing rafael devers and (to a lesser extent) franmil reyes is probably going to hurt me in future seasons but verlander (plus darvish rebounding) really helped my pitching stats improve enough to push me into that top spot.

so there will be changes next season and also I have a suggestion I'd like to run by everyone.

new for next year:
• 3rd DL slot. with the shortened IL, there's just too many dudes inured at any given time.
• static age cut-off date to be April 1. this is instead of basing off the official opening day, which is just creating too much work/confusion since it changes yearly.
• weighted lottery draft order. basically i use a random list generator to decide the draft order every year – next year I will weight the teams so that last place gets 13 chances at first pick, 12th place gets 12 - all the way to first place getting just one entry.

bigger change I'm contemplating and might poll managers on:
adding a 6th keeper. this will be a minor leager with no MLB experience. I would add a 2nd NA slot as well for this. this would not count as an under 27 player – the only condition to being kept is that they have never played in the majors and are (obviously) available in yahoo. since they added the top 30 prospects for every team last year, this should not be a problem.
what do we think?!
