  • degrom hit 102 last night
  • meet the new bullpen
  • jeff mcneil also thinks the vax is a personal decision; talk to him, alonso
  • guillorme's throw was bad, but mccann still should have caught it
  • missed keith going 'mmm'
  • wish i didn't have to watch them on my computer using a vpn

been making me a tinge sad that morbs will never get to see lindor in a mets jersey, but i appreciate them remaining a continued source of amusement. keep it up boys

Painfully familiar indeed. Only the Mets would lose to a very depleted Phillies lineup by way of a wild pitch strikeout of the pitcher that ending up scoring the 2 decisive runs.

Michael F Gill, Saturday, 1 May 2021 02:46 (four years ago)

Alvarado and Hoskins trying to start brawls with Smith and Castro was the insult on top of the cake, even had Ron Darling wishing the Mets would have given to the rage.

i love lindor and even tho he's a met i still have a hard time rooting for him to fail, but his slash numbers have been pretty concerning for a bit now even dating back to last season. his SLG percentage has fallen off a cliff and if he's not providing elite power at that position he's kinda just... a high AVG/low OBP shortstop getting into his 30s... it feels pretty dicey to me longterm. they really need him to be an MVP level player for the next 4-5 years because the back half of that contract is gonna be ugly given the type of player he is

deGrom needs his own thread:

ERA 0.71 IP 51.0 SO 82 WHIP 0.57

He is 9-for-20 at the plate this season, and he’s allowed only 22 hits in 51 innings on the mound. Put it another way:

Jacob deGrom's season:
4 runs, 3 RBI as a hitter (9-for-20, .450)
4 runs allowed in 51 innings as a pitcher.

— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) June 1, 2021

Vin Jawn (PBKR), Tuesday, 1 June 2021 11:25 (four years ago)

deGrom is going to do what Kluber and Donaldson looked like they might do (but almost certainly won't now): get into the HOF on an astounding peak value after the age of 27.

clemenza, Tuesday, 1 June 2021 15:23 (four years ago)

He still needs to play 3 more years to be eligible, and may need a Cy young / no hitter / post season heroics along the way to really seal the deal. But he is definitely on the path.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 1 June 2021 15:50 (four years ago)

You think he needs another cy young?! He could tread water the next three years and I think he’d skate into the hall no problem.

mookieproof, Thursday, 1 July 2021 14:13 (three years ago)

does bonilla celebrate? i kind of imagine him throwing a party on this day every year'

of course, each year the party gets just a little bit less valuable, in comparison to what that same party would have been like in the early 2000s

Karl Malone, Thursday, 1 July 2021 15:32 (three years ago)

Despite the injuries, this team seems pretty tight-knit. I don’t think I’ve seen teammates tagging and cheering each other on through social media as much as this year. Would love to see some more consistent hitting, but otherwise this year has been better than expected so far.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 1 July 2021 16:19 (three years ago)

The rumor they were talking on sports talk news this afternoon was that the Mets were considering just paying Bobby Bo off, which to that I "BOOOOOO...".

Mets just need to embrace it and no matter what happens, 7/1 will ALWAYS be Bobby Bo day.

earlnash, Friday, 2 July 2021 03:18 (three years ago)

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 1 August 2021 22:10 (three years ago)

That last hit by Schrock it was like less than 2 steps to Baez' right. Not exactly Ozzie Smith range. He muffed an easy double play ball hit right at him the inning before.

Reds commentators were saying the Mets looked like they were playing a get away game today.

earlnash, Sunday, 1 August 2021 22:46 (three years ago)

Reds owed the Mets a series win, as they had not won one in NY since 2013. They only play them 2 series a year and seem to lose them all no matter how good or bad the Mets seem to be.

I know I saw twice in person Homer Bailey get shellacked by the Mets. That huge first basemen the Mets used to have hit a couple of homers in one game and it was like 100 degrees.

It was a great first half! But back to cold hard reality now. Offense has dissolved and can’t seem to buy a hit with RISP all month. I’m so used to them dramatically collapsing, but each year comes with a different flavor of what-ifs. This year you really wanted to see what Degrom could have done had he stayed healthy. And Lindor was finally hitting consistently well before being injured.

Michael F Gill, Saturday, 21 August 2021 23:34 (three years ago)

everyone has injuries, and they've had -- as ever -- perhaps more important ones than most. but . . . also cohen is kind of right?

conforto and dom smith and mcneil have had terrible years, but at least they're not making what lindor is

stroman has been fantastic, walker merely average but easily above expectations. may and diaz (again) have been major disappointments. if degrom had been healthy they'd be right in it but also: fucking hit better!

(there is literally no one in MLB i want to see succeed more than jeff mcneil, just because keith law was such an incredible asshole about him 'not being a prospect')

Very much in the spirit of morbs:

Javier Báez said the "thumbs down" sign Mets players have made on the field is a response to fans that have booed him and others. Báez said the players disapprove of how often they've been booed.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 29 August 2021 23:19 (three years ago)

Morbs would have done his traditional SEASON OVER post about a week or two ago.

Villar and Pillar, despite not putting up impressive numbers, have had a lot of clutch hits this year. Jose Peraza too. But pretty much every other batter aside from Alonso and Nimmo has underperformed, especially with runners in scoring position.

Surprisingly the bullpen (including Diaz) has been mostly good this year, throughout all the turmoil. Although anything would be better than 2019.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 30 August 2021 00:06 (three years ago)

Morbs was anti-booing?

These guys need a thicker skin. Mets fans are pretty lax given the level of futility the last 60 years.

Taliban! (PBKR), Monday, 30 August 2021 00:17 (three years ago)

Don’t think Morbs would be anti booing, probably would be as disgruntled as the rest of the fans, although with a sense of futility that most Mets carry the past few decades.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 30 August 2021 00:33 (three years ago)

Michael F Gill, Monday, 30 August 2021 00:34 (three years ago)

Looked like it was on its way to happening, but they got 5 runs in the 9th inning to walk it off, with Baez scoring the winning run. Gary Cohen's voice cracked/jumped an octave during the final call. Apparently their first four-run ninth inning comeback in 10 years. Ya gotta believe?

Michael F Gill, Monday, 13 September 2021 21:05 (three years ago)

i'm very excited to listen to the mets broadcast crew today for a couple reasons. first, they're great, and i'm keith hernandez. but more importantly, i figure they will either not talk much at all about the thumbs down stuff, or talk about it briefly or in passing or something. the cardinals announcing team, whoever it is, will talk about it at length and find a way to spend an inning or two on it during each game of the series. somehow, they will have terrible opinions about it, and if jim edmonds is on, he'll have a just bonkers opinions of some sort and will then dan mclaughlin will start to apologize to him for disagreeing but stress that the facts are facts. at this, edmonds will double down and assert his opinion as the truth.

meanwhile over in the mets broadcast they appear to be enjoying a baseball game

"HYYOOOOOOONK!" is the sound I make (Karl Malone), Monday, 13 September 2021 23:42 (three years ago)

for those not catching this game, so far the home plate ump called a pitch thrown near the middle of the zone a ball, the third base umpire called a ball that was at least 6-7 feet fair a foul ball, and the first base umpire's right cheek was smashed by an errant through by SS edmundo sosa. the umpire's attention was completely focused on first base, so he didn't see it coming at all.

i am worried about the final umpire at 2B.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 5 October 2021 04:03 (three years ago)

I feel like he could stand to do a bit less. All he needs to do is shut up, hire Epstein, and open his wallet.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 19 October 2021 12:13 (three years ago)

The Boyland rumor may have actually been made up, but as long as someone can get a lolmets out of it, it’s worth it.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 19 October 2021 14:17 (three years ago)

The Mets have already been turned down by a handful of targets in their search for a new baseball operations head. Each of Theo Epstein, Billy Beane, David Stearns, Matt Arnold, Scott Harris and Brandon Gomes had been raised as potential candidates only to later be ruled out of consideration.

Cardinals general manager Michael Girsch can be added to that list, as Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports (Twitter link) that New York reached out to the Cards for permission to speak with him last week. Girsch, however, declined to pursue the opportunity, electing to remain in St. Louis instead.

girsch is pretty much a no name in st louis, for what it's worth. so good move to be turned down by him?

is this press (mlb trade rumors) right that the dynamic is these various candidates turning them down? if so, yikes

I think for at least the 7th year in a row, Mets may have had the greatest potential for both incredible feats and incredible failure. There has been a lot of failure to say the least, and even the good years (‘15, ‘16, ‘19) have been filled with so many rip-your-hair-out-of-your-head moments. Michael F Gill, Monday, 25 April 2022 22:53 (three years ago)

get ready for some jordan hicks. a guy who throws 100 mph sinkers, 91 mph sliders, doesn't strike out as many as you'd think, and is now trying to become a starting pitcher with only two pitches. note: he was a starter in the minors before getting promoted very quickly, and upon reaching the majors as a reliever he dropped from 4 pitches down to his current TWO (2). a "deep cut" storyline of the cardinals this year is whether he can bring back a 3rd pitch and get the game into the 5th or 6th inning (at some point this year - his goal for today should be a solid 4 innings), or if the ship has sailed

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 22:16 (three years ago)

I feel I am already familiar with the Hicks saga due to you KM! I remember when he first came up. Turning him into a starter is an interesting angle, considering his past injury / closer issues. If Flaherty is still around, do you think they still try this out? LGM.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 23:16 (three years ago)

If Flaherty is still healthy, this doesn't happen. It's interesting, though, what would have happened when the inevitable injuries occurred later in the season - if Flaherty goes down in mid-May, does Hicks suddenly get the 5th rotation spot after being in the late-bullpen the previous 2 months? i don't think so, but not sure. i'm glad he's getting the opportunity - both hicks and reyes were once thought of as starting pitchers before injuries and circumstances led them to the bullpen. they're both so injury prone, it's hard to imagine a long-term future for either one. but i'm loving this opportunity to see what hicks can do while his arms is still mythical

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 23:35 (three years ago)

every time alex reyes comes back it's like obi wan kenobi's ghost version. it's like hey, i see you there for a minute, and i love you, but goodbye

With Marte out, Buck has put Alonso in the two hole when the Mets have been facing lefties lately.

Can’t imagine making your MLB debut in the biggest series of the year when you are 20 years old.

101 wins, a combined no hitter, McNeil wins the MLB batting title, Alonso with a share of the MLB RBI crown, and mostly good vibes throughout the season. Some great comebacks and amazing work by Diaz. Hard to complain but wouldn’t have minded a game 163 tiebreaker since they ended up with same record as the Braves.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 6 October 2022 20:21 (two years ago)

“That’s when we realized the level of stickiness on his hand was much worse than it was even in the initial inspection that had taken place two innings prior,” Bellino said. “So following the proper protocols, Phil immediately recognized it. Phil then asked me to come in to verify that the hand was too sticky. Both Phil and I touched his hand. As far as stickiness, level of stickiness, this was the stickiest that it has been since I’ve been inspecting hands, which now goes back three seasons.

This has been one crazy story.

Bee OK, Friday, 21 April 2023 03:26 (two years ago)

"No one can explain what is too sticky," Boras said. "There are no units of stickiness to quantify. How do you appropriately enforce? MLB attempts to level the playing field by using standards that are not measurable. Further, one umpire has a stickiness standard that is different than all other umpires.

"Under this standard, players are not given due process of how to use an approved substance provided by the league," Boras added. "This reminds me of a local wine taster -- he likes what likes."

, Friday, 21 April 2023 11:25 (two years ago)

Nimmo is batting .536/.578/.756 over the last 9 games. Alonso is also torching the ball.

The pitching injury situation is a bit ominous but they are getting away with it at the moment. Great west coast trip so far.

Despite all the current pitching (and winning) problems, it’s not like the people who left are doing much better. Walker and Bassitt haven’t been good so far, Degrom is on the IL again, and if you wanted to sign Rodon he’d also be on the shelf.

Correa’s current awful start would also not have been tolerated in NYC after all the hoopla surrounding his physical. Brett Baty is looking better and better each day.

, Thursday, 5 October 2023 12:25 (one year ago)

I remember seeing his name trending on Twitter several times when he was in a lineup and people were absolutely raging /blaming Showalter & the thinking was that continuing to play him was Buck’s decision - I’m kind of surprised that it was FO but again I’m not that familiar with the Mets inner workings at all so that was probably obvious to you.

Showalter was told he had to play Vogelbach, the source said.

Part of the manager’s opposition to Vogelbach was philosophical: Showalter viewed the DH spot as one that should be used on a rotation, allowing position players a partial rest while remaining in the lineup.

But Showalter — who was fired last weekend, allowing new president of baseball operations David Stearns the opportunity to pick his own manager following the Mets’ 75-win season — also had an issue with Vogelbach’s limited skill set, according to a source.

i guess the silver lining here is if pete gets traded, can move vientos to first and bring baty back :]

, Monday, 3 June 2024 17:08 (one year ago)

Do you think Vientos is improved enough to be the starting 1B for the Mets if they do trade Pete?

Roman Anthony gets on his horse (gyac), Monday, 3 June 2024 17:15 (one year ago)

well the knock against vientos is that his defense at 3B isn't good cause he's not as rangy as baty is and his reaction time is pretty slow (just using my eyes). batwise he's definitely been raking and has earned a spot in the lineup, otoh it's a small sample size so far and there were stretches last year when baty was batting .300

defense, i don't really know what the current baseball orthodoxy is as i missed the sabrmetrics revolution but i gotta think vientos can better hide his fielding deficiencies at 1B vs. 3B

(ofc baty had 2HR in his first game back in AAA. hearing everybody hope that he doesn't end up like kelenic as an AAAA guy)

, Monday, 3 June 2024 17:22 (one year ago)

in reading about him and watching him play a bit, i think his value will lie in being a corner utility player. neither prospect people or projection systems seem to think he's an elite enough bat to be a 1B star but it doesn't seem like his defense at third is bad enough for him to not be able to play there either, even if he prob isn't the ideal player at that position. zips right now has him projected as a 2 win player over each of the next 3 years, alonso has been a 3-4 win player (per fangraphs) in his career. i think a lot will depend on how his body fills out. i feel like most teams are piecing together at least one of 1B/3B these days and if he progresses along he'd fit pretty easily into a situation like that. as a 3B only proposition it will all just rest on his defense but maybe w/ the DH spot they could still get him enough days at 1B/DH to make it make sense

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Monday, 3 June 2024 17:41 (one year ago)

the DH spot is pretty crowded - even if mets move JDM, i'd love to see marte get moved to the DH spot (he's been a black hole in RF), start tyrone taylor in RF with dj stewart to support the two.

either way we're doing so much better than vogelbach (sending my apologies over to the blue jays thread)

, Monday, 3 June 2024 17:50 (one year ago)

Wasn’t Baty pretty bad at 3B last year? But yeah, small sample size applies but I’m sort of pulling for him since I read this very cute article from last year from the Mets series at Fenway last July:

https://www.newsday.com/amp/sports/baseball/mets/mets-red-sox-mark-vientos-triston-casas-ih2ntu1i

But yeah utility guy who can rake is never a bad one to have and it seems he’s got enough pop for Citi

Roman Anthony gets on his horse (gyac), Monday, 3 June 2024 18:43 (one year ago)

i need this grimace thing explained to me

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 26 June 2024 04:17 (eleven months ago)

really nothing more than the mets went 7-0 starting with the game where grimace threw out the first pitch in a city connect uniform

and have been the best team in all of baseball in june (saw some stat like that)

other correlations: return of francisco alvarez (apparently some kind of catching savant who makes all pitchers better), benching mcneil for iglesias, vientos continuing to mash, lindor hitting well after switching to the leadoff spot

, Wednesday, 26 June 2024 04:49 (eleven months ago)

the overwhelming sentiment 3-4 weeks ago to completely do a massive selloff to the "we're looking pretty good playoff-wise, maybe we're buyers" now has been something to see esp. for long-time die hards like me, i admit i was all-in on the "blow the core up" team but i do think alvarez is the most important factor here, i buy into him having some sort of vibe x-factor (along with game calling skillz)

buzza, Wednesday, 26 June 2024 08:06 (eleven months ago)

I agree with 龜 that the hitting has been the big change, which seems mostly down to (1) reverting to the mean (they were so bad before), (2) Martinez starting to mash, and (3) Vientos giving them another power bat that was previously a zero.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Wednesday, 26 June 2024 11:35 (eleven months ago)

How does Vientos look at 3B? I know he was terrible last year but his savant page currently has him at -1 OAA which the Mets can certainly live with if he stays hitting.

Mark Vientos 20 hr

Romy Gonzalez’s utility infusion (gyac), Thursday, 22 August 2024 13:43 (ten months ago)

i wonder what the dynamic between pete and mark is in the clubhouse

, Thursday, 22 August 2024 13:53 (ten months ago)

Mark & JDM are boys, is that why you’re saying that

Romy Gonzalez’s utility infusion (gyac), Thursday, 22 August 2024 13:54 (ten months ago)

just feels like mark mashing means there's less pressure to offer alonso a big contract

, Thursday, 22 August 2024 14:13 (ten months ago)

also:
-pete recently was 'demoted' to the 5 hole in the order for the first time in a couple of years. he's back in clean-up but who knows how long that'll last. meanwhile mark was moved up to 2 and has responded very positively.
-mark has improved at 3B but is still not great there. moving him to 1B hides a lot of those flaws.

i guess if JDM walks next year that relieves some pressure. could move mark to DH. but i think he likes being out on the field with a glove on, catching some rays, throwing it hard.

, Thursday, 22 August 2024 14:46 (ten months ago)

I feel like Vientos might make it easier to let Pete walk but also Pete isn’t having a particularly great walk year?

I know Lindor helped Vientos with his fielding before spring training (he trained with him in Florida i think?) so if he’s improved it’s due to his own effort? Wonder if they try to trade Baty.

Romy Gonzalez’s utility infusion (gyac), Thursday, 22 August 2024 16:18 (ten months ago)

i was thinking since pete's having a bad walk year he might have been counting on the mets to give him an OK extension since he is a fan favorite. but now that vientos has arrived the mets have less incentive to coddle pete with a big contract.

i think they keep baty until they see how mauricio's rehab turns out. baty's been getting reps in at 2B

, Thursday, 22 August 2024 17:57 (ten months ago)

i'm also liking stearns decision to stock up on replacement-level relievers for cheap at the trade deadline. our (mediocre-to-good) bullpen made all the difference compared to the o's bone-on-bone grinding bullpen in that series. seems savvy given how many arms have exploded across the league this year.

kinda disapopinted that megill was left off the playoff roster, he played a big role for the team down the stretch. booth keeps on talking about how he could be good out of the pen, where maybe he could hit 100 on the fastball if he didn't have to worry about pitch count.

mookieproof, Thursday, 5 June 2025 20:49 (two weeks ago)

SNY just said pete has said before he loves playing at dodger stadium and loves LA... getting a sinking feeling of what if the dodgers make a run at pete next year

He waited out free agency and took a contract much smaller than he wanted just to be a Met this season…he’s retiring a Met if he can

I will worry about next year next year with Pete. I just hope the big guy keeps this up.

yeah all the time! he makes good diving plays and he makes good scoops. he gets dinged because he's incapable of throwing a ball to a pitcher covering at first

it's front loaded and got an opt out after this season, it's essentially another 'bet on yourself' contract

, Thursday, 5 June 2025 20:52 (two weeks ago)

Yeah and he’s holding up his end to get the payday he wanted

well he's signed thru 2027 while hitting .363/.429/.616 so unless ohtani is going back to playing the outfield there's not many ABs available for a 1B/DH on their roster

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 5 June 2025 21:05 (two weeks ago)

yeah i recognize that. but his ankles. he says he gets 1.5 hours of treatment on his ankle before every game just to be able to play. this is the play i was talking about where he just falls over:

what good is a hot bat if he can't even run to first in the future? unfortunately they can only pinch run for him once per game.

, Thursday, 5 June 2025 21:16 (two weeks ago)

That's why he just hits home runs in the World Series. Problem solved.

Young Dodgers pitcher is a huge John Mayer fan whose favourite Mayer track is a 2007 deep cut and Mayer is in the crowd today. The deep cut fact might be the most embarrassing thing revealed on a broadcast in a while.

if it seemed like his career was ending this year i could see what you're getting at but he's leading the majors in 1B fWAR by over half a win, is 12th in overall position player fWAR...

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 5 June 2025 21:33 (two weeks ago)

i'm saying his career might end in a year because of his ankle!

Now, each day, the Dodgers begin the process of putting Freeman back together again with an hour and a half of treatment before he sets foot on the field to start his routine. After the game, he undergoes a series of contrasting temperatures (hot to cold and back) and sometimes a boot to preserve the state of the ankle. He wears a heavy wrap under his pants and lifts in his cleats to prevent his ankle from jamming against the top of the shoe.

, Thursday, 5 June 2025 21:34 (two weeks ago)

because he is going to retire or be deemed medically unable to play?

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 5 June 2025 21:40 (two weeks ago)

Why is his ankle so fucked anyway? Because he played through it last autumn?

from…Peru? (gyac), Thursday, 5 June 2025 21:46 (two weeks ago)

well, i think it'll be because his ankle is going to fall off and he'll need to get a prosthetic foot xp

, Thursday, 5 June 2025 21:48 (two weeks ago)

Some keystone cops stuff by the Mets today. Been waiting 10 years for a corner infielder that can throw home.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Thursday, 5 June 2025 23:47 (two weeks ago)

sucks cause they executed an almost identical play to get ohtani out at home earlier in the series (also with reed garrett)

pete's gone from one mental block (not being able to hit in a contract year) to another block (having the yips in throwing home or to first)

Mets might be one of the only teams in the league where its star players even acknowledge Pride

I was at the game today, despite the somewhat miserable weather for June. Mindy needed to take out Megill earlier before the game got away. Megill seems to be doing what he does every year - get off to a promising start, then revert to the back of his baseball card.

Still a fun time and decent crowd given the weather.

honestly we should! i uh, have a bunch of vouchers/discounts from being a flushin degenerate and would happily use them on an ilx outing. only catch would be it has to be a mon-thurs game

I’m down and can do a week night game with a little notice. I will warn you: my record for in-person games is not so good.

You three should go, seeing ball with an ilxor is a great time (even though I have only done this once, though more if you count user ShariVari I guess)

that's kind of crazy, i thought his swing has been looking better lately

but yeah if you completely rework your swing during the offseason i think they'll probably want you to sort that out at AAA first
