i love lindor and even tho he's a met i still have a hard time rooting for him to fail, but his slash numbers have been pretty concerning for a bit now even dating back to last season. his SLG percentage has fallen off a cliff and if he's not providing elite power at that position he's kinda just... a high AVG/low OBP shortstop getting into his 30s... it feels pretty dicey to me longterm. they really need him to be an MVP level player for the next 4-5 years because the back half of that contract is gonna be ugly given the type of player he is

It was a great first half! But back to cold hard reality now. Offense has dissolved and can’t seem to buy a hit with RISP all month. I’m so used to them dramatically collapsing, but each year comes with a different flavor of what-ifs. This year you really wanted to see what Degrom could have done had he stayed healthy. And Lindor was finally hitting consistently well before being injured.

everyone has injuries, and they've had -- as ever -- perhaps more important ones than most. but . . . also cohen is kind of right?

conforto and dom smith and mcneil have had terrible years, but at least they're not making what lindor is

stroman has been fantastic, walker merely average but easily above expectations. may and diaz (again) have been major disappointments. if degrom had been healthy they'd be right in it but also: fucking hit better!

Morbs would have done his traditional SEASON OVER post about a week or two ago.

Villar and Pillar, despite not putting up impressive numbers, have had a lot of clutch hits this year. Jose Peraza too. But pretty much every other batter aside from Alonso and Nimmo has underperformed, especially with runners in scoring position.

Surprisingly the bullpen (including Diaz) has been mostly good this year, throughout all the turmoil. Although anything would be better than 2019.

These guys need a thicker skin. Mets fans are pretty lax given the level of futility the last 60 years.

for those not catching this game, so far the home plate ump called a pitch thrown near the middle of the zone a ball, the third base umpire called a ball that was at least 6-7 feet fair a foul ball, and the first base umpire's right cheek was smashed by an errant through by SS edmundo sosa. the umpire's attention was completely focused on first base, so he didn't see it coming at all.

I think for at least the 7th year in a row, Mets may have had the greatest potential for both incredible feats and incredible failure. get ready for some jordan hicks. a guy who throws 100 mph sinkers, 91 mph sliders, doesn't strike out as many as you'd think, and is now trying to become a starting pitcher with only two pitches. note: he was a starter in the minors before getting promoted very quickly, and upon reaching the majors as a reliever he dropped from 4 pitches down to his current TWO (2). a "deep cut" storyline of the cardinals this year is whether he can bring back a 3rd pitch and get the game into the 5th or 6th inning (at some point this year - his goal for today should be a solid 4 innings), or if the ship has sailed

I feel I am already familiar with the Hicks saga due to you KM! I remember when he first came up. Turning him into a starter is an interesting angle, considering his past injury / closer issues. If Flaherty is still around, do you think they still try this out? LGM.

If Flaherty is still healthy, this doesn't happen. It's interesting, though, what would have happened when the inevitable injuries occurred later in the season - if Flaherty goes down in mid-May, does Hicks suddenly get the 5th rotation spot after being in the late-bullpen the previous 2 months? i don't think so, but not sure. i'm glad he's getting the opportunity - both hicks and reyes were once thought of as starting pitchers before injuries and circumstances led them to the bullpen. they're both so injury prone, it's hard to imagine a long-term future for either one. but i'm loving this opportunity to see what hicks can do while his arms is still mythical

I think it was 30 For 30 that did an episode about him and Gooden that I thought was really good. Explored their personalities and upbringings - and exposed a lot of the faults in the way teams treated their players (mentally/socially) at the time.

It’s impressive. This is the first time he’s really had any sort of consistent playing time since he came up in 2018. He could be a late bloomer offensively a la McNeil. He does fit well in this new look Mets offense which seems to focus on putting the ball into play as opposed to launch angle / power.

His 2020 was pretty incredible. They retroactively said he was playing with an injury in 2021, but his 2022 has been worse. JD Davis, who is in a similar season-long malaise, has had some great moments/clutch hits this season, where Dom has just looked lost. A trade may actually help him out in that he would get regular playing time and start fresh.

The team defense is so solid, especially compared to recent years.

Deadline pickups have been very good so far. Edwin Diaz has had a magical last two months. It feels like Showalter and Scherzer have shifted the clubhouse culture this year way more than anyone expected. There is a lot of chemistry on this team.

well the knock against vientos is that his defense at 3B isn't good cause he's not as rangy as baty is and his reaction time is pretty slow (just using my eyes). batwise he's definitely been raking and has earned a spot in the lineup, otoh it's a small sample size so far and there were stretches last year when baty was batting .300

defense, i don't really know what the current baseball orthodoxy is as i missed the sabrmetrics revolution but i gotta think vientos can better hide his fielding deficiencies at 1B vs. 3B

(ofc baty had 2HR in his first game back in AAA. hearing everybody hope that he doesn't end up like kelenic as an AAAA guy)

in reading about him and watching him play a bit, i think his value will lie in being a corner utility player. neither prospect people or projection systems seem to think he's an elite enough bat to be a 1B star but it doesn't seem like his defense at third is bad enough for him to not be able to play there either, even if he prob isn't the ideal player at that position. zips right now has him projected as a 2 win player over each of the next 3 years, alonso has been a 3-4 win player (per fangraphs) in his career. i think a lot will depend on how his body fills out. i feel like most teams are piecing together at least one of 1B/3B these days and if he progresses along he'd fit pretty easily into a situation like that. as a 3B only proposition it will all just rest on his defense but maybe w/ the DH spot they could still get him enough days at 1B/DH to make it make sense

Need to get to .500 first. Currently that would get you a playoff spot. Not sure you need to make a deal then if you can get good momentum going into the playoffs.

I would still sell because I don't think the current core is enough to get you there consistently in the next few years. Not to say they shouldn't be a wild card team a couple of times, but they just lack dynamism.

It’s not that bad? People will be much happier with a winning record and a chance for the playoffs. Put together another solid week or two and the ship is mostly righted. the overwhelming sentiment 3-4 weeks ago to completely do a massive selloff to the "we're looking pretty good playoff-wise, maybe we're buyers" now has been something to see esp. for long-time die hards like me, i admit i was all-in on the "blow the core up" team but i do think alvarez is the most important factor here, i buy into him having some sort of vibe x-factor (along with game calling skillz)

I agree with 龜 that the hitting has been the big change, which seems mostly down to (1) reverting to the mean (they were so bad before), (2) Martinez starting to mash, and (3) Vientos giving them another power bat that was previously a zero.

How does Vientos look at 3B? I know he was terrible last year but his savant page currently has him at -1 OAA which the Mets can certainly live with if he stays hitting.

just feels like mark mashing means there's less pressure to offer alonso a big contract

also:
-pete recently was 'demoted' to the 5 hole in the order for the first time in a couple of years. he's back in clean-up but who knows how long that'll last. meanwhile mark was moved up to 2 and has responded very positively.
-mark has improved at 3B but is still not great there. moving him to 1B hides a lot of those flaws.

i guess if JDM walks next year that relieves some pressure. could move mark to DH. but i think he likes being out on the field with a glove on, catching some rays, throwing it hard.

I know Lindor helped Vientos with his fielding before spring training (he trained with him in Florida i think?) so if he’s improved it’s due to his own effort? Wonder if they try to trade Baty.

i was thinking since pete's having a bad walk year he might have been counting on the mets to give him an OK extension since he is a fan favorite. but now that vientos has arrived the mets have less incentive to coddle pete with a big contract.

i think they keep baty until they see how mauricio's rehab turns out. baty's been getting reps in at 2B

i'm also liking stearns decision to stock up on replacement-level relievers for cheap at the trade deadline. our (mediocre-to-good) bullpen made all the difference compared to the o's bone-on-bone grinding bullpen in that series. seems savvy given how many arms have exploded across the league this year.

If Baty and Vientos both keep hitting, I like Baty at 3B and Vientos the DH (with Acuna at 2B). Very strong defensive lineup. Marte, McNeil, and Winker a nice veteran bench.
