Exactly. This team played over its head last year and isn't an AL East winner in its current form. But this team plus a #1 starter and one more effective starter is a really different team equipped to make a run.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 1 February 2024 15:21 (ten months ago) link

there's just sooooo much talent on the current 40 man roster and just on the cusp. it's almost silly. hard to imagine they're not in the mix even without a big signing or trade. curious what they do w/ hall and wells (bullpen or rotation?) and how they divvy up high leverage appearances b/w cano, kimbrel and tate...or if tate is able to regin his 2022 form.

j.q higgins, Thursday, 1 February 2024 17:42 (ten months ago) link

Wouldn't last year's Pythagorean luck be offset by a great young team getting another year of experience? When does Bautista return?

Corbin Burnes had a 2.94 ERA in ’22, 2.43 in ’21 and 2.11 in ’20

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 2 February 2024 02:33 (ten months ago) link

At first glance seems like a pretty great move for both teams. Ortiz is a legit prospect who is going to struggle to find a place in Baltimore's infield. The Brewers get him and DL Hall, who still has real upside, and the Orioles add the one thing they need most, frontline starting pitching; sure he may leave in free agency but the window is the window and this is what you do when you have a chance to win.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 2 February 2024 02:34 (ten months ago) link

welllllll, shit...

So what we've found out in the last five minutes in summary is...

Bradish - right UCL sprain, open the season on IL
Means - month behind, might miss OD
Henderson - oblique aggravation, likely for OD
Basallo- stress fracture, won't catch till April

i try not to complain about bad calls too much but this is pretty egregious, like at least 3 runs are down to this umpire in the last inning.

JoeStork, Thursday, 11 April 2024 00:50 (eight months ago) link

Curious as to when all this generational-player hysteria began. I remember a lot of hype for David Clyde's first start in 1973--cover of Sports Illustrated--because he came out of high school. (Hype then not being what hype is today.) After that, I really don't remember anybody until Griffey Jr. came along.

clemenza, Thursday, 11 April 2024 01:06 (eight months ago) link

And the SI cover came after his first start, not before.

clemenza, Thursday, 11 April 2024 01:06 (eight months ago) link

I feel like there might have been extra hype when the baseball card market started to take off, I just remember everybody getting kinda hyped the same year Griffey was coming up about other guys like Gregg jefferies, Steve Avery, Ty Griffin (lol), etc. Before griffey, there was definitely hype around Bo Jackson but that obviously was of a different nature entirely. Post-griffey, you had other guys but they were a bit less hyped, they had to start to prove themselves in the majors before people fully committed to it. Even someone like Frank Thomas who in retrospect was definitely a can't miss kind of guy.

omar little, Thursday, 11 April 2024 01:16 (eight months ago) link

But I do feel like once you hit 1989, every several years you started to see one or two guys everyone would start to flip out over. Now it's multiple guys per year.

omar little, Thursday, 11 April 2024 01:18 (eight months ago) link

Yeah, of course--rookie-card mania, timed perfectly with Upper Deck's launch and Griffey's arrival.

clemenza, Thursday, 11 April 2024 01:18 (eight months ago) link

You can't forget Todd Van poppel or Brien Taylor, I mean the donruss rated rookie cards are probably a good place to look for guys you forgot existed 2 years after their hype was at its peak.

omar little, Thursday, 11 April 2024 01:21 (eight months ago) link

You could have made a fortune on the baseball card stock market investing in and then 3 months later selling off all your jefferies cards.

omar little, Thursday, 11 April 2024 01:22 (eight months ago) link

To state the obvious, it really does put a lot of pressure on someone. Mike Schmidt hit .200 for two seasons without, I'm guessing, drawing a lot of attention. Robin Yount was pretty ordinary for three or four seasons. (As someone who's all over Vlad all the time, I'm being hypocritical.)

clemenza, Thursday, 11 April 2024 01:27 (eight months ago) link

I see a parallel between that and the pressure for new-release films to make huge amounts of money immediately.

clemenza, Thursday, 11 April 2024 01:28 (eight months ago) link

In more recent times, Joe Mauer was touted as THE REAL DEAL (USA Today HS-POY for both football and baseball but NOT for basketball), iirc he only struck out in one AB in his 4 year HS career, was drafted straight out of HS as #1 pick 2001 and is heading to Cooperstown.

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 11 April 2024 01:40 (eight months ago) link

Mauer averaged more than 20 points a game as a point guard for Cretin-Derham Hall.[9] He was also named to the All-State team during his final two years on Cretin-Derham's basketball team.[12]

What an utter disappointment... sheesh.

I honestly think Matt Wieters mania was bigger, at least in Orioles world, than the pre-debut hype around Holliday, Grayson Rodriguez, or Gunnar, with only Rutschman maybe comparable

Orioles thread, I know--last mention I'll make of this. I vaguely recall that Bob Horner arrived with a lot of fanfare too:

Horner was drafted by Atlanta with the first overall pick in the 1978 amateur draft, and he made his Major League Baseball debut the same year. He is one of only a handful of players to go directly from college to the starting lineup in the majors without spending a day in the minor leagues. In his first game, he belted a home run off future Hall of Fame pitcher Bert Blyleven of the Pirates.

Connor Norby has still struck out in every plate appearance of his major league career

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 4 June 2024 00:06 (six months ago) link

Gotta feel good for Austin Hays!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 4 June 2024 00:45 (six months ago) link

you do!

j.q higgins, Tuesday, 4 June 2024 01:04 (six months ago) link

The Jays broadcasters pointed out something about Rutschman tonight: his K/BB ration last season was 101/92 (really good), this year it's 42/13. That's weird...I'm pretty sure that ratio tends to remain relatively stable in most cases. Obvious there's fluctuation, as players concentrate on power or plate discipline or contact or whatever, but that's drastic. Even weirder--it suggests he's more concerned with power this year--his batting average is up 25 points.

clemenza, Tuesday, 4 June 2024 01:15 (six months ago) link

Connor Norby has had a plate appearance in which he has not struck out

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 4 June 2024 01:20 (six months ago) link

xp to clemenza -- the whole team has taken a much more aggressive approach at the plate, they're last in the AL in walks

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 4 June 2024 01:21 (six months ago) link

I checked that--they're 9th with 512 (one below league average). So not last, but on the aggressive side, yes.

clemenza, Tuesday, 4 June 2024 01:27 (six months ago) link

Oops--maybe I should check 2024, not 2023...

clemenza, Tuesday, 4 June 2024 01:28 (six months ago) link

You're right: 4th in runs, 2nd-last in walks. Whatever works, I guess.

clemenza, Tuesday, 4 June 2024 01:29 (six months ago) link

norby's first hit is a homer!

j.q higgins, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 01:25 (six months ago) link

Conor Norby has had a major league plate appearance that was most definitely not a strikeout!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 01:36 (six months ago) link

Love to see a little middle infielder hitting the ball that hard, gives Brian Roberts

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 01:37 (six months ago) link

Vibes?!

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 03:16 (six months ago) link

roberts was more of a speedy spray hitter in the minors, though. norby's power is legit.

j.q higgins, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 11:29 (six months ago) link

roberts hid a billion doubles though and really smacked them off the wall, at least that's how I recall him

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 15:09 (six months ago) link

I'd forgotten about him--geez, 50+ doubles three times.

clemenza, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 17:02 (six months ago) link

re: roberts

for sure. he was a doubles machine! he grew into that, though. i'm just saying norby has shown good power in college and the minors.

j.q higgins, Thursday, 6 June 2024 01:35 (six months ago) link

Love me some Craig Kimbrel drama

H.P, Thursday, 6 June 2024 01:39 (six months ago) link

Ugh

H.P, Thursday, 6 June 2024 01:40 (six months ago) link

We don't deserve Albert Suarez

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 12 June 2024 10:21 (six months ago) link

Anyway I love watching this rendition of this team, delighted that Hays is hitting again (after an insanely godawful start he was normal-bad in May and has OPS 1.471 in 21 PA in June) but y'know it kind of seems like the Yankees are never gonna lose again

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 12 June 2024 10:24 (six months ago) link

bradish. ucl. nuts.

j.q higgins, Saturday, 15 June 2024 17:37 (six months ago) link

...but last night was one of the craziest games i've watched in a while. definite playoff feel.

god, perez, though. just not a guy i trust in high leverage situations.

j.q higgins, Saturday, 15 June 2024 17:39 (six months ago) link

you know who’s good is gunnar henderson

na (NA), Sunday, 16 June 2024 17:51 (six months ago) link

I’ve begun to suspect as much

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 16 June 2024 18:18 (six months ago) link

sucks that half their pitchers are injured but today is pretty cool

JoeStork, Thursday, 20 June 2024 22:53 (six months ago) link

just delightful.

j.q higgins, Friday, 21 June 2024 01:06 (six months ago) link

lmao what is this game?

JoeStork, Saturday, 22 June 2024 03:20 (six months ago) link

y'know it kind of seems like the Yankees are never gonna lose again

― Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, June 12, 2024 5:24 AM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

it was cool how the Yankees lost and then lost again

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 22 June 2024 13:03 (six months ago) link

Can't figure out whether this thread title does or doesn't suit the way the 2024 season has played out so far

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 2 July 2024 14:34 (five months ago) link

Henderson just his his 28th in the Orioles' 96th game...He'd have to pick up the pace a bit, but he has a decent shot at 50. I think A-Rod's the only SS to have done that.

clemenza, Sunday, 14 July 2024 17:26 (five months ago) link

it was cool when this team was good

JoeStork, Sunday, 14 July 2024 18:39 (five months ago) link

lmao

JoeStork, Sunday, 14 July 2024 18:59 (five months ago) link

big win

mookieproof, Sunday, 14 July 2024 19:51 (five months ago) link

team of destiny

(destiny = shitty yankee defense)

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 15 July 2024 02:46 (five months ago) link

So what package do you offer for Skubal? And who's untouchable?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 20 July 2024 19:24 (five months ago) link

so, they've added eflin, Rogers, Dominguez and pache, cleared hays, norby, stowers...I imagine Holliday's on his way back up? all three pitchers controllable beyond this year isn't awful.

j.q higgins, Tuesday, 30 July 2024 18:10 (four months ago) link

that was a hell of a price tag for a SP who i would describe as average when not being unpredictable.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 30 July 2024 18:17 (four months ago) link

Yeah, I give current management a decent amount of benefit of the doubt but I don't see how to make this one look like a good deal for us -- that's two ready-to-go position players with years of control, you need to get more for that

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 30 July 2024 18:48 (four months ago) link

I imagine Holliday's on his way back up?

aye cap'n

Mrs. Ippei (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 31 July 2024 16:06 (four months ago) link

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 31 July 2024 16:08 (four months ago) link

Grand slam for Holliday! trust the process, friends.

j.q higgins, Wednesday, 31 July 2024 18:11 (four months ago) link

Well, I say, that nice young fella’s got a bit of pop in his swing

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 31 July 2024 18:51 (four months ago) link

...and westburg to DL w/ a broken hand. commence mayo watch?

j.q higgins, Wednesday, 31 July 2024 20:22 (four months ago) link

We are proud to have played our small part in the Jackson Holliday story.

clemenza, Thursday, 1 August 2024 00:35 (four months ago) link

He was my first round pick in our league and I was committed to keeping him into next season no matter what - so this brings me much joy

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 1 August 2024 00:50 (four months ago) link

holliday looks much more comfortable at the plate this time around.

j.q higgins, Sunday, 4 August 2024 20:43 (four months ago) link

Great AB just now, holding on to draw a walk with the Orioles up 4 in the 9th, professional hitting

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 4 August 2024 20:47 (four months ago) link

two weeks pass...

Boy we've kind of just transmuted into a mediocre baseball team for the moment, huh

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 20 August 2024 15:51 (four months ago) link

the moment goes on

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 17 September 2024 04:19 (three months ago) link

Don't see us winning this series if Burnes doesn't win game 1. But I kind of do see Burnes winning game 1. This is it, what we spent the money for. And every indication so far is that Burnes is up for it.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 1 October 2024 19:23 (two months ago) link

He was indeed up for it..... but :\

H.P, Tuesday, 1 October 2024 22:38 (two months ago) link

postseason losing streak at nine. yeesh.

j.q higgins, Tuesday, 1 October 2024 23:17 (two months ago) link

Goddamn, this one hit me right in the guts. I know it's not over but...

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 1 October 2024 23:49 (two months ago) link

Well.
