There’s this interesting piece in The Athletic regarding pitcher injuries. This leaped out:
Meister said an analyst with one club told him the average major-league career is now under three years for all players and just under 2.7 for pitchers.“It’s like NFL running-back numbers,” Meister said. “Cynically from the ownership side of things, they’re never going to have to pay big bucks to any of these players. Forget about them becoming free agents. They’re never even going to become arb-eligible.”Meister said for a time, he believed the league was comfortable with a “next man up” mentality. That disturbed him; only so many arms, he said, are capable of throwing at the major-league level. But lately, he is encouraged by the league’s effort to find solutions.
Throwing a baseball is an act of violence that has been graphically defined by Dr. James Andrews, Dr. Glenn Fleisig and the other doctors and clinicians at the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) in Birmingham. From the loaded position, the shoulder, at its peak speed, rotates forward at 7,000 degrees per second. "That," Fleisig says, "is the fastest measured human motion of any human activity."While in the loaded position, the shoulder and elbow bear the equivalent of about 40 pounds of force pushing down. When the ASMI biomechanists wanted to know how much more force an arm could take, they brought cadavers into the lab and pulled and pushed upon the elbow joint to find the breaking point. The cadavers's ligaments blew apart just after 40 pounds of force. "So a pitcher is just about at the maximum," Fleisig says. From the loaded position, when the ball has come to a stop, it is accelerated from zero mph to 90 mph in 3/10 of a second. Rick Peterson, the former New York Mets pitching coach who has worked with ASMI since 1993 and is the acknowledged expert on pitching biomechanics among his peers, once referred to that measurement in a speech he gave to college coaches. A doctor of physics who was in the audience approached him after the talk."Rick, do you know what that means in g-forces?" the doctor asked."I have no idea.""If your entire body was accelerated at that rate of speed for over 60 seconds you would die."No wonder pitchers break down. Pitching, unlike most athletic activities, has reached the limit of what is humanly possible. So while we are accustomed to increasingly swifter sprinters, faster swimmers, longer drivers of the golf ball and bigger football players, you will not see a pitcher throwing 110 mph. The arm and shoulder are maxed out. Pushed any further, the shoulder would blow, like an engine in a race car."People run faster and jump farther because we have figured out ways to make your muscles bigger and stronger," Fleisig says. "The baseball pitcher, every time he pitches, his muscles are pushing his ligaments and tendons to the limit. In the future, I can't anticipate making the muscles bigger and stronger because you can't strengthen the ligaments and tendons that much. That's why the role of research in baseball is not to get the pitcher to throw faster but to lower the risk of injury."

I saw that, do not wish that on Cole. Some reports seem to indicate that it sounds like a dead arm, but apparently they’re getting multiple opinions, and I feel like you don’t get an MRI for no reason? He’s probably not going to be Opening Day ready even if he doesn’t need surgery.

Why can’t his awful former college teammate get injured?
Cole's the best pitcher in the game and about 80% into a HOF career, so I very much hope he's okay.

― Roman Anthony gets on his horse (gyac), Wednesday, 13 March 2024 19:44 (one year ago)
That's lousy how much time deGrom and Scherzer and Kershaw and Verlander and now Cole have lost the last few years (you can throw in Sale, too). It cost Sale a HOF career and will probably cost deGrom one; Cole should come through okay, but who knows. Just in general, though, it's bad for the game.
― clemenza, Thursday, 14 March 2024 03:58 (one year ago)
Cole's situation sounds bad.
Maybe this is a silly question, but should we be surprised that these injuries develop in spring training? During the season, they pitch at maximum effort every five days and it's reasonable that accumulated wear and tear will lead to injuries. But during spring training, when pitchers are still ramping up to maximum effort? Or is it more likely because of something from his offseason training regimen?
Or is "ramping up to maximum effort" just as risky as pitching at maximum effort?
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 14 March 2024 08:37 (one year ago)
Cole throws fast and has never been injured. It’s unfortunate but I doubt it’s remotely related to spring training, ligaments only have so much in them

Conclusion: This is the first empirical study examining injury trends and pitching characteristics between MLB and NPB athletes.MLB-affiliated pitchers threw faster and relied more on breaking pitches in comparison with NPB-affiliated pitchers. From injurydata, MLB players were younger, taller, and heavier with a higher percentage of throwing-related injuries, contact injuries, andinjuries sustained outside of competition. Overall, the MLB team indicated a 3.7-fold higher rate of reported injuries with fewer daysmissed per injury than did the NPB team. Competitive conditions are distinctly different between MLB and NPB, and thus, moreextensive research collaborations in the future can identify best practices to advance health and performance for both leagues.

Tyler Glasnow said that using a mixture of sunscreen and rosin on the baseball helped him grip it better and other pitchers have said similarly.
― Roman Anthony gets on his horse (gyac), Tuesday, 9 April 2024 20:43 (one year ago)
Glasnow also attributed some blame for injuries to the rule changes for sticky stuff. He said when it was implemented, he had to start gripping the ball tighter which led to an arm feeling far worse after a start.

Kirby’s problem is mental, I think. Whole team is imploding rn. He’s not good at getting out of jams. Like if you look at the most recent result, he’s fine up until he balks in the 3rd inning and it all goes to shit from there.
― Roman Anthony gets on his horse (gyac), Wednesday, 10 April 2024 05:42 (one year ago)
Bednar's velo's there, location is way off (only 4 of 23 pitches in the strikezone despite 8 swings), maybe no pulled pork tacos just yet.
Fried is one of 2 of the top 10 (Burnes as well) pitchers from 2021-2023 who is currently not shut down (back/shoulder) or in TJ Recovery. That's kind of wild to think about. His Savant page is v sad... a sea of blue except for GB% and low exit velo. His velo is also not terrible compared to rating. Is he getting BABIP'd? Will put in an order for a small plate of pulled pork tacos.
Kirby's 4SFB started off at 98mph but was gassed out at 92 towards the end when he got the hook. Only 4 swinging strikes on the night so his movement was not happening at all. This might be a full catering order of pulled pork here.

Bobby Miller, LAD's SP3, just hit the IL-15 for shoulder inflammation retroactive to 4/11, not sure if it's legit or just a way to manage his workload.
I had forecasted some workload issues (~23 starts?) this season based on his IP history:

...but this is coming a little faster than expected. LAD are no strangers to IL shenanigans but I sincerely hope Miller is okay.

I don’t know if I’d include Glasnow in the list, it was just a hand cramp and he was pulled after over 90 pitches. I was watching that game and he looked fine when he came out. Both Glasnow & Giolito were recently on Chris Rose Rotation and said pitcher injuries were (no shit) due to guys throwing harder and faster and not resting over the offseason. Glasnow got very frank with it: he said that kids coming up pitching today know that they won’t get drafted throwing control stuff with no velo and from the perspective of someone who wanted to be in the big leagues, he saw surgery and pain as a necessary price to achieve the dream, and said all pitchers felt the same. Giolito agreed on his episode, though not so candidly.

No players have come to rely on surgery as much as pitchers. In the past twenty years, the average major-league fastball has become five miles an hour faster. For the U.C.L., speed destroys. ElAttrache has operated on elbows whose tissue resembled spaghetti.
ElAttrache made an incision in Patiño’s elbow. He removed a calcified piece of bone that had embedded in the ligament. The tissue wasn’t shredded beyond salvaging—a beleaguered rigatoni, maybe, but not spaghetti.

Woke up early to watch Kershaw pitch again and was not dissapointed. Sloppy start of the 3rd but locked it down with 3 strike outs. His curve and slider look like they're going to take him the distance. Around 50 strike outs away from 3000. Wife crying from the stands, big thing for him to be back. Hunter Greene. I was starting to secretly root for him for the Cy, he was getting so little attention next to Sale and Skenes.

― clemenza, Sunday, 18 August 2024 01:06 (eight months ago)
Sale immediately goes out and pitches lights out. (I have something of a proprietary interest in Sale winning; it would increase his HOF chances considerably--more even than the WS he was brought in to secure, something he already has--and rescue the half-dozen rookie cards I have from the dustbin of commons.)
― clemenza, Sunday, 18 August 2024 03:18 (eight months ago)
Sale's sitting on a pitching TC at the moment (wins/ERA/K); pretty hard to beat, even if he's not leading in WAR.
― clemenza, Sunday, 18 August 2024 16:19 (eight months ago)
Sale and Skuby Snacks are way ahead of everyone else in their respective leagues. Pitching has been weird this season obv, among the usual contenders it's not just the injuries but the absolutely disastrous meltdowns.
― omar little, Sunday, 18 August 2024 16:42 (eight months ago)
Pitching clock has an impact on the meltdowns right? Because there’s no real opportunity for the pitcher to leave the mound & clear their head, and the limitation of mound visits means they need to be saved.

― Romy Gonzalez’s utility infusion (gyac), Sunday, 18 August 2024 16:54 (eight months ago)
Probably a moot point now, but even after Sale's start yesterday, bWAR is still:
1. Greene • CIN 5.42. Sale • ATL 4.53. Skenes • PIT 4.0
― clemenza, Sunday, 18 August 2024 16:59 (eight months ago)
fangraphs has Sale way ahead of Greene, 5.2 to 3.7 iirc. Greene is outstanding but it's hard for me to really think of him as performing better than Sale this season esp to the degree b-ref's model believes.
― omar little, Sunday, 18 August 2024 17:06 (eight months ago)
When I look at them side-by-side, BRef's ranking doesn't make much sense to me.
Sale is ahead in: ERA, ERA+, FIP (huge margin), WHIP, BB/9, K/9.Greene is ahead in: IP (2.2 more than Sale), H/9.
― clemenza, Sunday, 18 August 2024 17:14 (eight months ago)
bWAR uses RA9, fWAR uses FIP
― z_tbd, Sunday, 18 August 2024 17:20 (eight months ago)
Sale leads in RA9, too, 2.69 to Greene's 2.89. Anyway, I won't go on about it, I know this is not the thread, and Greene's injury effectively ends his chances anyway.

Jeff Passan wrote about a recent MLB report on arm injuries: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/43024395/mlb-2024-pitching-injury-report-study-takeaways-analysisFindings probably won’t shock you, but some interesting commentary:
Partially at fault, the report posits, is that MLB teams' response to this has not been to change the behaviors antithetical to health but rather work around them. More teams have resigned themselves to arm injuries and instead sought roster depth, taking advantage of rules that allow them to churn their pitching staff. In each of the last four years, teams have averaged more than 32 pitchers used per season. In 2010 that number was 22.8, in 2000 22.5, in 1990 20 and in 1980 15.1.
― gyac, Tuesday, 17 December 2024 20:30 (four months ago)
I'm not sure what the solution is here. Reducing workloads and improved training will help, but the real issue is the obsession with velocity and spin rate, and I don't see that going away soon.

Sorry if you can't access this:
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6048449/2025/02/05/mlb-statistic-stuff-plus-changing-game/
"Aptly named, Stuff+ is a number that evaluates a pitcher by studying his movement, velocity, spin and release points. It’s generally trying to remove the context of how a specific pitch performed on the field by looking at how certain combinations of shapes, velocities and spins usually perform across baseball and then assigning that value back to the pitch itself. What started with a revelation like 'hard sliders that drop a lot are good' has become more complicated, but the analysis comes from the same place."
Which then relates to injuries...in a long and detailed piece, if you're interested.
― clemenza, Thursday, 6 February 2025 04:33 (three months ago)
Kind of got buried, but Ohtani's pitching recovery from his 2nd TJ has been pushed back from September 2024 to the 2024 Playoffs to 2025 Spring Training and now targeting "sometime in May (possibly)". Thought it was interesting that he's being babied even more than previously reported.
I had dinner with a chef who is a huge baseball nerd and he said that everyone in Japan is happy that Roki is out of the league because nobody really liked him.

Iirc he is a shy and quiet guy who had an adversarial relationship with the press (?) But in Japan I’d be inclined to take the latter point with a truckload of salt as their standards for public behaviour for their celebrities etc are quite different. See: numerous stars forced out of their careers in film, music etc for drug use. The only legit criticism of him out there is that him pushing for posting two years early fucked over the Marines, which it undoubtedly did, but again, if they really did sign him on the promise he could be posted when he wanted to go, I’m not sure there’s much to be said there either. There are a few NPB accounts that post in English that might have something on this.
― triste et cassé (gyac), Friday, 7 February 2025 15:29 (three months ago)
the Ohtani pitching saga is kind of intriguing because it strikes me that probably a large part of last season's massive success could be attributed to a singular focus on hitting, which might be overthinking it a bit and doesn't necessarily mean a hitting-only Shohei is more valuable than a "severed" version. But i wonder how long he'll keep the pitching going. I find it hard to believe he'll still be doing it regularly in a few years.
― omar little, Friday, 7 February 2025 17:39 (three months ago)
It definitely is because he was emptying the tank without worrying about conserving energy for a start/recovering from a start. I think he said that’s why he focused so much on stolen bases?
― triste et cassé (gyac), Friday, 7 February 2025 19:37 (three months ago)
i still think the dodgers given their resources are highly incentivized to figure out a way to keep him warm/sharp as a pitcher throughout the season before unleashing him in the playoffs either as a starter or a high leverage reliever/closer. i obv understand after two TJs why people think he should just give up pitching but it's hard for me to think about what he did closing out the WBC, and how much high leverage relieving matters in the playoffs, and say that he/the team should just totally walk away from that. i even see the argument for trying to use him as a madison bumgarner type pitcher in the playoffs, but i don't think they need to tax him at all during the regular season. they're not the angels
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Friday, 7 February 2025 19:45 (three months ago)
With what they paid him, they are going to have to get that value form him in terms of innings. I could see never letting him pitch beyond 4/5 innings per start maybe

Cole to have Tommy John is just a brutal turn of affairs, but otoh underlines how fortunate he’s been with his health to date. He might be the most high profile ace who’s never had it. (Scherzer hasn’t either but I don’t think he still qualifies as a true ace).

I do think Cole will still go on and do enough to get in the HOF, but he's 34, and he's certainly not a sure-thing yet. If his recovery from 2026 on is shaky, I think he'd fall short. 1.5 lost seasons at this point in your career hurts.

It breaks your ulnar collateral ligament. It is designed to break your ulnar collateral ligament. Someone somewhere (not here i hope?) made a good point about the disadvantage of Ohtani being a 2-way player is that if/when he ever pitches again, he won't be able to pitch any rehab games in the minors because the Dodgers need him (and are paying him) to DH everyday.
So he might have to do simulated games on off days to build up his stamina.
