Too late. I already voted multiple times in both, a great Chicago tradition that nobody better take away from me.

Voted Yankees in 7 in both. I made an early prediction in the playoff thread that Cole would win MVP, but I realized that's much harder now for a starting pitcher. I saw that starting pitchers used to dominate, winning about half the time--you won two starts, sometimes even three, you were MVP.

I voted Dodgers in 6 in one poll, and Yankees in 6 in the other. Whatever happens, I picked a winner.

I'm heavily leaning Dodgers though, because a) their relief corps is on a magic carpet ride, belying the fact that their starting pitching is a big question mark in October yet again, b) Betts and Ohtani are too good, Muncy and Kike morph into superstars in the playoffs, c) I will always hate the Yankees more than any other team.

I'm verrrry curious to see what the Soto/Judge/Mike Stanton stack will unleash on Flaherty/Buehler/Knack/Yamamoto/whomever else LAD has who couldn't hold SD/NYM under 6+ ERA.

These are gonna be some high scoring affairs if I were a gambling man prone to taking the over... #freeippei #draftkings

I voted quickly, so I didn't really consciously think it through--probably expecting Cole's two starts to be Yankee wins. I'm hoping it goes seven and that Judge, Stanton, and Ohtani hit 10+ HR between them, and that Soto has an OPS of 1.500.

Well on his way: Soto (can't say more than that, though, at 25).
Back on track: Stanton, but he has to stay healthy enough for 500.

The two managers are barely 50 and have both done a lot already--career winning percentages of .627 for Roberts and .584 for Boone to start. They'll have two WS wins after this year. I bet one of them ends up there.

Really hard to come up with anyone else. ("In this WS"--not counting Kershaw.) So I'd say a good chance at seven, maybe eight.

Boone hasn't won a WS (at least as a manager).

i agree on paper this reads like a slugfest, the dodgers bullpen magic could run out but i don't know if i trust any of the yankees pitchers 100% either, beyond possibly cole. i do think the dodgers hitters after their big three have more potential to contribute in major ways than the yankees hitters beyond their big three.

Disagree there. The Yankees got out of the inning--it worked. Cole had just finished a what, seven- or eight-pitch AB with Teoscar? He wasn't going to finish the inning and end up throwing over 100 pitches.

With the exception of a game against Oakland on the 20th September where he only needed 99 pitches to go 9 innings, Cole hasn’t pitched more than 6.2 innings all season. Last year he routinely went deep into games but the way they’re handling him this year and the way he looks makes me think they are trying to protect him. I think if it’s 2023 Cole Boone sends him back out there for more, but this isn’t that guy.

This circles back to the point clemenza made about Cole - I’m sure Ohtani will want to play through anything, but if there’s a risk of further damage to his shoulder would they let him? In must win games?

Trevor Story also had a subluxation right at the beginning of the season, also on a bad landing, but he fractured a bone in his shoulder too. Hopefully Ohtani avoids the worst outcome & testing doesn’t flag anything up.

If there's a risk of further damage, I can't imagine they'd play him. They have way too much invested in him to take that kind of chance.

I don't know about this specific injury, but the swelling after a dislocation is really bad. Could he swing a bat without serious pain? If so, could he generate any power from the shoulder, enough to make it worthwhile playing?

The NFL players didn't agree to a cap, it was forced on them by the owners. After the 1987 strike, when the owners used replacement players and basically crushed the players union, the players didn't have much leverage.

The MLB players union has always been stronger, and has refused to even entertain the thought of a cap. In response, the owners say screw you, you can't have it both ways (i.e. a floor but no cap) so we refuse to consider having a floor.

Nope, they're different things. Curt Flood challenged the reserve clause by trying to overturn the antitrust exemption in his case before the SCOTUS, but he lost. The antitrust exemption is still very much in effect.

i think the antitrust exemption effectively means nobody can start a league that can attempt to compete with major league baseball. but i think that also means indy ball can exists and in fact does exist since indy ball is minor league at best. i don't think mlb would care too much about a second team in toronto so long as that team didn't market itself as a competitor to the jays. i'm betting felicity knows a lot more about this than i do.

Yes to all of this. In the real world, if you want to move your business into a new market, you can do it -- you're the business owner and can do what you like. But in baseball you can't. The Giants blocked the A's from moving to a better location, the Orioles blocked a team in Washington for years, and the Mets and Yankees completely control a huge NY market that could easily support additional teams (there were three NY teams until the 50's, the Metropolitan population is much larger now).

And the Federal League lawsuit that led to the antitrust exemption made it essentially impossible for anyone to start up a rival league.

The structure of the minor leagues is also a direct consequence of the antitrust exemption. This is what allows MLB to engage in blatantly anti-competitive practices such as unilaterally dropping a bunch of minor league affiliates during the pandemic, and retaining the rights to players through what is essentially a reserve clause. Other sports don't have minor leagues -- this is no accident.

I think they figure if you could be "out" of the inning then none of the runs are ER...like if there's an error on out 3 you can give up 10 straight HRs and still have a clean sheet

Any run scored after what should have been the third out is unearned. Over the course of a season, there can be a real difference among starters in the number of unearned runs they give up--sometimes it's better to just look at runs per game instead of ERA. (Tonight, though, I think Cole should legitimately be spared any earned runs.)

He was trying to move on from the question, but the reporter kept pressing until they got his honest opinion. He's right though, it was entirely Cole's fault.

Speaking of nosy reporters, I watched the start of Ohtani's Q&A, first question (paraphrased): "how did it feel to win and could you please say a few words in English" (Shohei shot that down and decided to speak Japanese), second question: "the season had a rocky start, Ippei, gambling, etc." at which point I shut it off. I'm sick of journalists angling for soundbites and gotcha moments, just ask normal questions.

I mean, maybe, but that’s part of the game, answering those questions. Asking them is trying to get an explanation for the inexplicable and Rizzo gave them an honest response so they got what they wanted (and what they inferred he felt). Rizzo I think is a free agent now so he clearly has no bridges left & I don’t think they were going to bring him back anyway.

Cole himself is always a fascinating postgame cos he’s pretty candid and honest about his own mistakes. I thought his interview earlier in the season where he intentionally walked Devers and then had a meltdown on the mound was great; he totally owned that it was a terrible decision. He did say that he misread the spin on the ball and he should have covered.

Judge looked devastated. The playoff choke narrative looked like it finally might have shifted when he hit that go ahead home run and then he lets that ball drop in the outfield. Hard not to feel for the player, it’s clearly mental.

I'm cutting a little more slack for Cole, just because he'd already been rattled by the two previous errors. I didn't know what the hell had happened when it happened (again, watching in a pub with no sound), but I've looked at it again, and it was kind of Bermuda Triangle freak play. Not 100% sure either Cole or Rizzo gets him. Anyway, the Yankees did re-take the lead; they still should have won. For a series that didn't feel close, it was surprisingly close: an extra-inning win, a one-run comeback win, and two wins where (I think) the Yankees had at least the tying run at the plate in the 9th. Runs, 25-24; games, the way they actually measure these things, 4-1.

One thing this series accomplished was separating the Dodgers from those '90s Braves teams as the great underachievers of the past 30 years. There's probably some online math already, but for a period of sustained dominance--which you can mark from either 2017 or 2013--with at least two WS wins in the mix, they've got to rank on the shortlist of baseball dynasties. I'm very title-oriented. To me, the Giants' three championships in five years stand above what the Dodgers have done even though they didn't even make the playoffs in the years in between!

There are different ways to look at it. For me, it'd be a 10 year period at least, no losing seasons, divisional/league championships, and a minimum of one WS win. (If you go back in time, probably more than one when you went straight to the WS). That's all just gut-feeling, and I'm not at all saying that's right, or that your way or anyone else's is wrong. James had some kind of point system that went up or down each season.

The Dodgers starting in 2013 (12 seasons):

1,129-708 = .615
Five 100-win seasons
Eleven divisional titles
Four league titles
Two World Series wins

(They had winning seasons in 2011 and 2012, too, but just barely.)

Winning two puts them on equal footing with the Big Red Machine, who are always mentioned on the short list of greatest teams ever. Downgrading the Dodgers because in the years they didn't win the WS they only won a division or only won a 100 games--which the Reds didn't many years--just doesn't make sense to me. It's like saying we're going to treat Ernie Banks the same as this other okay shortstop who also played for the same number of years and didn't win a WS. Haven't read it yet, but that Fangraphs piece reminded me that the Earl Weaver Orioles of the '70s--surely a dynasty if there ever was one, and always mentioned as one of the greatest sustained runs ever--won only one WS, at a time when you only had to win eight postseason games to win one. They lost in '69, '71, and '79, with the first two of those teams clear favourites--overwhelming favourites in '69. (They also won in '66, with a different manager but with some of their core '70s players in place.)
