Free agency begins five days after the last out of the World Series. Notable free agents:

- Blake Snell (again)
- Max Fried
- Corbin Burnes
- some other guy, John Sewtoe? Idk, maybe he plays for the Brewers or something

Interesting to see how Boras approaches this winter given he got fired by Monty last year.

It feels like a gamble right? But I guess they view - or viewed at the time he signed this - him as the kind of pitcher who ages well and is still giving you something in his late thirties like Verlander. Wasn’t this year his first real injury?

Brian Cashman says there are no contract extension talks going on with Gerrit Cole, per @martinonyc

Cashman says the Yankees were not comfortable adding another year to Cole’s contract, and he agreed to remain on his current deal with four years, $144 million remaining pic.twitter.com/Iqvh4Q4eQh

— Talkin' Yanks (@TalkinYanks) November 5, 2024

Cashman: Gerrit, Yankees are a family firm. A happy family. Maybe Anaheim gives you that fifth year; we don’t know. Frankly we don’t want to know.

gyac, Tuesday, 5 November 2024 00:30 (ten months ago)

yeah that's a blink! nice try tho

mookieproof, Tuesday, 5 November 2024 00:40 (ten months ago)

in a sense it's still a W for cole because the yankees are basically admitting that his deal is an overpay at 4/144 bcuz they don't need to use the opt out cancellation as leverage to get him to return. confirmation for gerrit that he has an above market contract

that said, the opt out is an effective cancellation of the contract so the yankees could have in theory not offered him the same deal, which means they must have talked all this out beforehand and cole knew the yankees would still put the same offer back on the table, so it's not clear to me why both sides went thru the process just to remain back in the same place. there must be some contractual fine print or luxury tax loopholing or something going on

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 5 November 2024 01:00 (ten months ago)

I feel like Alonso is perfect for the Yankees

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 5 November 2024 01:01 (ten months ago)

they must have talked all this out beforehand and cole knew the yankees would still put the same offer back on the table, so it's not clear to me why both sides went thru the process just to remain back in the same place

oh, i doubt it! i think cole, recognizing the yankees desperately need him for them compete over the next four years, tried to pressure the yankees, who recognized that cole already had an overvalued contract and was famously a 12yo kid holding up a GO YANKEES sign and didn't actually want to go elsewhere. and that the yankees mostly won that standoff

almost counts as the incredibly rare instance of a mutual option being accepted by both sides

mookieproof, Tuesday, 5 November 2024 01:27 (ten months ago)

i think it was a "standoff" insofar as cole didn't get the option year added, but i think it was clearly all prearranged. because if they were playing hardball w/ each other, and cole was genuinely trying to leverage the yankees, then it follows that the yankees wouldn't come back to the table and say "hey, no harm no foul on that opt out, here's the same exact deal you just threw in the trash"

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 5 November 2024 01:37 (ten months ago)

you have to assume boras knew long before today that there wasn't a better deal than 4/144 out there for him, and so i find it extremely hard to believe that cole would have opted out w/o knowing that the 4/144 offer would still be on the table, which leads me to believe this was all hashed out ahead of time, and also that there is some explanation be it luxury tax or whatever for why this whole charade went down just for him to end up on the same deal

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 5 November 2024 01:40 (ten months ago)

i remain skeptical but am looking forward to jack curry blasting cole for being greedy and disloyal!

mookieproof, Tuesday, 5 November 2024 02:00 (ten months ago)

idk, if this was all prearranged why leak it to the media?

occam's razor - mookie's theory is the more convincing one to me. i'm betting cole didn't get any whispers from other teams after the opt out went public, hence his willingness to basically mutually cancel the opt out.

don't think the yankees could have offered a lower contract than 4/144 even if it was within their prerogative because of all the press that would have generated and the psychic damage it would have caused cole.

, Tuesday, 5 November 2024 04:02 (ten months ago)

This wasn't one of those deals where the player opts out and becomes a free agent, the Yankees had veto power. There's always the risk of opting out and sitting at home without getting any good offers, that wasn't what happened here. The Yankees said "nah, we'd rather not pay the extra $36M if you don't mind" and Cole said, "OK, I'm not dumb enough to walk away from $144M guaranteed" and that was that.

I'm not sure why Cole tried pulling this stunt after a year where he was injured. Maybe he thought he could get a deal like deGrom's?

gyac, Monday, 25 November 2024 14:43 (nine months ago)

Kikuchi has great stuff and when he pitched for the Jays I often thought that he was better than his stats. The Astros got him to mix up his pitch selection and he rode a lucky win streak to a 9th place finish in CY voting. His contract will either be the steal of the offseason or a running joke for years to come, I think there's no inbetween on this one.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 25 November 2024 15:53 (nine months ago)

I don't know...I think he's the kind of pitcher who can thrive as a third or fourth starter on a good team. Houston was ideal for him; I don't think the Angels will be.

clemenza, Monday, 25 November 2024 16:39 (nine months ago)

he has impressive stuff; but still gets knocked around sometimes even when he doesn't look off. i think those last 10 games for the Astros were just a streak of good games and nothing more. it's not going to ruin the Angels finances or anything - the guy can still be an ok back of the rotation arm for the next few years.

xpost

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 25 November 2024 16:46 (nine months ago)

Wait, $21M/yr only gets you an OK back of the rotation arm? I don't think that's what the Angels are paying for.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 25 November 2024 19:03 (nine months ago)

here are the SP salaries from last year in this range

robbie ray -- $23m
chris bassitt -- $22m
charlie morton -- $20m
joe musgrove -- $20m
nathan eovaldi -- $20m
marcus stroman -- $18m
jameson taillon -- $18m
lucas giolito -- $18m

fangraphs WAR would tell you that kikuchi has been better over the last two years than many of these pitchers. i haven't watched him pitch much so i don't have an opinion personally. to what extent these pitchers are "OK back of the rotation arms" or more than that is up for discussion, but i think the angels would argue that kikuchi is in this range of pitcher performance wise (if not better!) and so they paid market value (if not less!) on the contract. whether this theory actually plays out as he hits age 34, or whether it makes sense for the angels to be spending on this kind of pitcher, are separate discussions. but in terms of "this" being what ~$20m gets you in the SP FA market.... yeah

prob worth considering, if you're the angels, that pretty much every pitcher on the above list has underperformed what i think their teams expected of them. or, at the very least, none of them are providing any sort of excess value on their contracts. these seem like steady high floor low ceiling deals, except the floor can actually be pretty low too, and the ceilings are definitely low based on how these guys have pitched over the last few seasons. overall prob not a great way to spend money but you can see why teams w/ holes in their rotations are still suckered into these deals. chris bassitt has given the blue jays 2.5 and 2.2 WAR the last two seasons... i think that steadiness matters? the team would prob defend it. but he is basically an above average innings eater, in my eyes. blue jays fans feel free to chime in on how that deal feels because it's prob the "success story" of this list

$52m signing bonus + $60mil deferred.

H.P, Wednesday, 27 November 2024 10:42 (nine months ago)

I'm not sure I get the logic behind the Snell deal. In 2023, he won the Cy Young, became a FA, and couldn't get signed because teams weren't buying into his long term health and effectiveness.

This year, he had a horrible first month, got injured, but came back and finished strong. Now his long term health and effectiveness isn't a worry? He pitched 100 innings this year.

Is this the going rate for a pitcher with upside now? Or does "LOLDodgers have money to spend" explain everything? deGrom's deal with the Rangers (which was ridiculed at the time) is looking better by the day.

gyac, Wednesday, 27 November 2024 11:27 (nine months ago)

Or does "LOLDodgers have money to spend" explain everything?

Saw it mentioned on Twitter that the $52m signing bonus:
- is tax free as Snell lives in Washington State where there is no income tax
- is partly possible because of the cash flow freed up by only paying Ohtani $2m in actual money (the cap hit is ofc $46m).

Didn’t the league slap down Steve Cohen for blowing money on washed Scherzer, Eduardo Escobar and Starling Marte?

gyac, Wednesday, 27 November 2024 11:30 (nine months ago)

This is also washed Verlander erasure, sorry

gyac, Wednesday, 27 November 2024 11:31 (nine months ago)

deferrals are interesting because they are slowly losing value - that is, interest rates are slowly going back down which means the present day cap hits are slowly going up. although tbf we're probably not going back to a ZIRP environment barring another COVID event but deferrals probably have more value this offseason than they will in the 2025-26 offseason

, Wednesday, 27 November 2024 14:11 (nine months ago)

altho hmm i guess the huge signing bonus didn't really lower the CBT value that much

For CBT purposes, 20% of Snell's signing bonus count toward each year of the deal, so it doesn't impact the average annual value. The key is how much money (bonus & salary) is deferred, though @FabianArdaya reports that the Dodgers' CBT figure is expected to be $32-33M per year.

z_tbd, Sunday, 1 December 2024 22:35 (nine months ago)

he's waaaaaay above average at shortstop, center field, and second base, plenty of speed as well. when he manages to bat at a league average level, he's a 4+ WAR player. on the dodgers, he'll probably be the perfect utility player

seattle seems like a pretty chill environment to play in, good for bohm maybe

, Thursday, 5 December 2024 15:33 (nine months ago)

I do not much care for Bohm the player. Seattle has pitching but I think they ask for a pitcher back in return cos they’re one injury away from chasing the market like everyone else and they’re not spending.

Anyway, John Fisher found his wallet.

BREAKING: Right-hander Luis Severino and the A’s are in agreement on a three-year, $67 million contract, sources tell ESPN. It is the largest guarantee in the history of the A’s franchise. And even with the qualifying offer attached, Severino got well over market expectations.

— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) December 5, 2024

gyac, Thursday, 5 December 2024 17:52 (nine months ago)

Passan says the A’s are going to spend more this offseason. For context:

Free agents have been loath to sign with the A's, who will play in a minor league stadium in Sacramento for the next three seasons before a planned move to Las Vegas. By stretching themselves financially -- their previous high deal was a six-year, $66 million extension for Eric Chavez in 2004, and their biggest free agent outlay was three years and $30 million for Billy Butler -- the A's convinced Severino to anchor their rotation.

wow i thought sevy’s whole deal was he “likes living in new york city”

, Thursday, 5 December 2024 17:54 (nine months ago)

Bohm is a guy who doesn't really impress me (much?), his similarity scores are guys like Mike Blowers and Lonnie Chisenhall, i.e. not a crew of Mr Excitements. I figure his ceiling might be a Kelly Gruber type but who knows.

omar little, Thursday, 5 December 2024 18:12 (nine months ago)

i read the Phillies were asking for Logan Gilbert or George Kirby in exchange for Bohm...that would potentially be a bit like if the Orioles gave up Mike Mussina in the mid '90s for Jeff Blauser or something imo.

omar little, Thursday, 5 December 2024 18:19 (nine months ago)

He’s kind of a bloop merchant, right? He was a third overall pick so I assume they want to get something for him. Honestly don’t think Mariners would trade Kirby or Gilbert for almost anyone until their last years of control.

gyac, Thursday, 5 December 2024 18:58 (nine months ago)

bloop merchant otm, and he strikes me as someone who is near enough to replacement level that i don't know why you'd bother giving up useful assets for him. you could find a similar bloop merchant who doesn't have the same flashy resume for a lot cheaper.

omar little, Thursday, 5 December 2024 19:33 (nine months ago)

Case in point: the Royals are also in on Bohm (they have their own bloop merchant in Maikel Garcia).

gyac, Thursday, 5 December 2024 19:38 (nine months ago)

I think you should try to get bloop merchant into the lexicon as a replacement for banjo hitter.

clemenza, Thursday, 5 December 2024 22:10 (nine months ago)

Players who are really good bloop merchants, like Arráez or Ichiro, they're the Bloop Merchants of Venice.

clemenza, Thursday, 5 December 2024 22:11 (nine months ago)

I didn’t invent the term “bloop merchant” but I love it all the same. Ichiro & Tony Gwynn obviously the kings of the tendency

gyac, Thursday, 5 December 2024 22:42 (nine months ago)

Personally, I put Gwynn/Carew/Boggs slightly ahead of Ichiro--they're the Bloop Merchants of the Galaxy, I guess.

clemenza, Thursday, 5 December 2024 22:47 (nine months ago)

Getting back to the guy who started this, Bohm might have a little too much power to fit the bill--16 HR/162 games--but he definitely looks like a dubious investment. His career OPS+ is 107, and not a great fielder. He's 28. Basically, he had a great couple of months in 2024.

clemenza, Thursday, 5 December 2024 22:55 (nine months ago)

he's very much in the Shea Hillenbrand mold imo, the most superficially impressive profile based on a bit of pop which masks the tendency to bloop, a guy who might beef up into a Francoeur type if the wind blows out a few extra times during the season, but otherwise will be a net zero.

omar little, Thursday, 5 December 2024 23:01 (nine months ago)

rob thompson randomly benching bohm in the nlds because of his 'attitude' can't help bohm's trade value either

, Thursday, 5 December 2024 23:28 (nine months ago)

We discussed this back in the Luis Arraez thread but there’s great value in a bloop merchant in your lineup if you know how to use them. I think the contract hitting profile actually would work well in Seattle because there’s plenty of places to drop in hits and the lineup is not good.

On the subject of unloved bloop merchants who’d benefit from a change of scene, I really like Yoshida but his trade value is basically zero because they perma DHed him (do not do this with a bloop merchant) and it’s a shame cos he’s a guy I could easily see hitting .300 but his 2024 was toast due to a labrum injury and then his thumb or something. Now he would work well in Seattle, would be so cool to see him blossom with Ichiro.

gyac, Friday, 6 December 2024 00:05 (nine months ago)

Right-hander Clay Holmes and the New York Mets are in agreement on a three-year, $38 million contract with an opt-out after the second year, sources confirmed to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

The Mets plan to turn Holmes, who has spent his big league career as a reliever, into a starter. He has not started a game since his rookie season in 2018.

mets fanbase copium is that stearns' philosophy is to not overspend on pitchers, he's great at picking rusted parts off the scrap heap and rehabbing them into solid starters

but then i look at how we ran out of pitching against the dodgers and also how the padres were able to bring out cease, king, darvish against the dodgers

can't help but wonder if we'll ever have more than 1 ace on the staff

, Saturday, 7 December 2024 14:42 (nine months ago)

or, i guess, to put it more broadly - stearns showed last year that he's pretty good at making cheap acquisitions with high upside, which was effective when working with the budget of a smaller market team like the brewers

can he spend steve cohen's pocketbook? it may pull against every fiber of his being to do so

are they simply saving their dry powder until the soto sweepstakes are concluded?

― mookieproof

The one most similar case to at least Smoltz I can think of is Ryan Dempster, who was a pretty mediocre starter, then went to the Cubs and became a fairly average reliever, then was converted back to a starter and became shockingly very good.

But for this case, maybe CJ Wilson? Was a reliever for a few years entering MLB, then Texas turned him into the poor man’s Barry Zito (Oakland era).

The A's didn't give pitcher Luis Severino a club record $67 million contract solely because they want to impress the fans in their new locale, Sacramento. The A's need to add significant payroll this winter or else they risk a grievance from the Major League Baseball Players Association — and they have to spend perhaps another $25 million or more on next year's roster before they're in the clear.

Baseball's collective bargaining agreement requires teams to carry a payroll more than 1 1/2 times the amount they receive from local revenue sharing. A club in violation doesn't automatically receive punishment, but puts itself at greater risk of penalty if the union brings a grievance.

sorta interesting to see the red sox and yankees invest so much in pitching in a division that typically really hits the crap out of the baseball, but the only team in the AL east that looks to have a formidable offense is baltimore, perhaps toronto if they make some big splash here soon. both yankees & red sox rotations are looking pretty good, boston less starry but if they get a decent giolito year they have some good depth w/ the younger guys behind them

Santander is coming off a career year; Before 2024 he had a respectable career 109 OPS+ (113 as a full time player). assuming he's going to return closer to his norm in 2025, i feel like that is well replaced in the outfield by O'Neill and Kjerstad coming into his own and also in the lineup by Mayo (if he pans out) and hopefully Holliday improving.

i was surprised they didn't play him more, but i'd imagine there will be more opportunity for him to prove himself in '25 - since '24 was his debut. i think they can justify giving him more at bats at the cost of Cowser, O'Neil and Ohearn more than they could Santander.

That's a lot of money and I am always wary of signing 30+ pitchers to multi-year deals based on them supposedly figuring something out, but the starting pitching market is crazy and he fit well with the team. Presumably it will not inhibit Mets ability to do something else if things don't work out.

For people wondering why the Dodgers are dragging their feet signing Teoscar Hernández.. They’re in the luxury tax bracket where they pay 110% tax on any signing from here on out. The Red Sox just signed Walker Buehler for 1-yr $21M. That same contract would have been 1-yr, $44.2M for the Dodgers.

nb they can absolutely still afford that, and as half the luxury tax penalty goes to revenue sharing that poor teams' owners will simply pocket, much of the league is rooting for them

I don’t think anyone expected Teo to get 5-6 years. He was very good last year, average the year before, and good-but-that-glove-is-awful before that.

Christian Walker is two years older and got more money from the Astros. Offensively they are similar, although Walker is the better defender (from what I read about the deal -- I haven't seen him play enough).

The FA market for hitters is weak this offseason, I think there was more money to be made.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 29 December 2024 09:15 (eight months ago)

Teams don’t want to sign older guys to longer term deals. There’s plenty of statistical info backing up that performance can fall off a cliff after 30. Teo, Justin Turner, Christian Walker, Freddie Freeman - they are the obvious exceptions, but age still comes for any player and I would guess that teams are terrified of being left with an expensive player they can’t move if they show up to spring training and their bat speed has fallen off a cliff.

gyac, Sunday, 29 December 2024 09:50 (eight months ago)

A lot of players have signed long terms deals at 30-31 recently. Bregman is 30 and is looking for a long term deal now. I'm not saying that Walker or Teoscar are superstars but there aren't a lot of premium offensive players available in FA. That's why when a great player does hit the market (Ohtani, Soto), the market goes nuts. But it seems like teams just don't want to shell out serious coin unless it's a superstar level player ... but then again, how many so-so pitchers have gotten multi-year deals this offseason. IDGI, really.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 29 December 2024 13:04 (eight months ago)

if the only real tool is the hit tool, that’s a problem for guys over 30. pitchers are so good now that just the tiniest falloff in bat speed, reaction time etc is the difference between genuinely great and mediocre. now, if you can walk, steal, field… all those things can mitigate somewhat

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 29 December 2024 14:28 (eight months ago)

>Christian Walker is two years older and got more money from the Astros.

Teo got more money. $66MM vs $60MM... tho a chuck is deferred, there was another large amount up front.
in terms of value – Walker was worth an avg of 0.7 wins per season more over the last 3 years; the difference coming from defence, as Teo is a slightly better hitter. if that holds steady, the Astros will have gotten two extra wins for a few million less!

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 29 December 2024 17:43 (eight months ago)

You're right Thermo, thanks for the fact check.

I get what you guys are saying about aging patterns and multi-tool players ... still though, last year at this time, no team wanted to sign Matt Chapman and none of those arguments seemed to apply. The risk factors for these 30-year old 30 HR, low-BA, poor fielding hitters are real, but so are the risks of signing 30-year old starting pitchers, but the market for them is exploding. It's weird. Let's see what Santander and Alonso end up signing for.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 30 December 2024 10:28 (eight months ago)

Matt Chapman was coming off a down year offensively and signed a pilot contract, it helps that his floor is high due to his glove. If he hadn’t extended this year he’d be getting some very lucrative offers right now.

Pitching is always at a premium. It’s a completely different market.

gyac, Monday, 30 December 2024 11:16 (eight months ago)

Pillow not pilot

gyac, Monday, 30 December 2024 11:17 (eight months ago)

The pitching market is different ... except when it's not, such as last year when nobody wanted to sign Snell (reigning Cy Young winner), Montgomery, Stroman, etc. I just don't see any real pattern to it. Maybe there isn't a pattern (i.e. logical market forces at work), sometimes it's as simple as one team making a point of closing a deal early in the offseason, and that tips over the dominoes, sets the market, and forces other teams into making moves they might not have otherwise made.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 30 December 2024 12:15 (eight months ago)

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Monday, 30 December 2024 19:08 (eight months ago)

from calcaterra on the burnes signing:

As were tax rates, though that's often a lot more complicated than the non-accountants among us try to make it out to be given that players pay taxes in every state in which they appear. As an NL West player Burnes will still be spending a lot of time in California ballparks, after all.

i had no idea! also this is insane and i wonder how it gets tabulated! game days? can't be actual game appearances, right??

the yankees open at home vs milwaukee this year with the standard thursday-saturday-sunday series; does everyone get charged state taxes for three days or four? iirc players aren't paid for spring training; does that mean they pay no state taxes in the grapefruit/cactus leagues? (tbf florida and arizona may not actually have state income taxes -- not sure)

does this also hold true for minor leaguers? because hiring an accountant to figure this stuff out would hit a little harder on a minor-league salary

mookieproof, Monday, 30 December 2024 21:33 (eight months ago)

I believe it would be true for minor leaguers as well. This is based on state tax rules involving the employees' nexus to each state, not anything to do with MLB. For instance, I believe touring musicians have to pay taxes to each state in which they hold a concert. Not sure of the trigger for players; I would presume it is being on the roster for the game rather than an actual appearance, but I have no direct knowledge.

I'm not going to say it is cheap or not complicated, but any reasonably experienced accounting firm can figure this out for maybe a couple of thousand dollars. I would assume the clubs have an obligation to provide the players with the tax reporting documents that the players need showing their income by state.

https://arizonasports.com/story/3568822/corbin-burnes-contract-details/

The deal includes a $10 million signing bonus, has significant deferred money and an opt-out after the first two years, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.

Gambadoro reported Burnes will make $20 million per year over the first two seasons of the deal before the opt-out.

so, arizona has a flat state income tax rate of 2.5% while california, like the federal code, has a progressive state tax income rate. every dollar above $721,315 is taxed at 12.3% per nerdwallet... let's not get into what the blended tax rate on the first $721,315 is, i'm just gonna assume it's also taxed at 12.3%.

right off the bat burnes is saving $980,000 in taxes on the $10M signing bonus over signing with the giants because of the difference in tax rates (again, ignoring how the first $721,315 would be taxed in california)

how much will he save on the season?

according to baseball tax experts jackson hewitt:

While a baseball player has an annual or multi-year contract, his salary is actually calculated by each game he plays. This helps in tracking his income by state.

and also:

The jock tax
A baseball player pays income taxes not only in the state where he lives but in every state where he plays. But, since he doesn’t pay taxes twice on the same money, he’ll file a non-resident return for all those states and claim a credit from each state, to reduce the amount he owes to the state where he lives. This so-called “jock tax” has been around since the 1960s and, as you might guess, has never been very popular with players.

so that means 81 games on the road, 81 games at home. if burnes is making $20M per year for his first two years, then that means $10M on the road, $10M on home. that $10M at home, he's saving $980,000 a year on per our calculation above. so over two years he's saving a little under $2 million.

what i want to know more about is (i) what happens when a player hits the IL, (ii) what happens when a player is sent to the minors and (iii) how this works out for pitchers, who play in every 5th or 6th game, not every game.

sooo... if a player only plays in 100 games a season, then is his annual salary calculated on a 100 game basis? or still 162 games? and how does time spent in the minors count against that? and are pitchers annual salaries divided by the number of games actually pitched, or are they also taxed on a 162 game basis? if the former, could a pitcher strategically organize his pitching schedule to avoid pitching in states with high tax rates like california or new york?

, Monday, 30 December 2024 22:54 (eight months ago)

this is also very interesting:

No credits
If a player lives in one of the nine states without income taxes (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming), they won’t get a credit for taxes paid to another state because there aren’t any income taxes in his home state.

if arizona allows unlimited credits for taxes paid to other states, then it could be the case that the amount of taxes he pays in the other 16 states + DC + toronto is more than what he needs to pay under arizona and he gets credited for that in his arizona state tax return. if so, credit burnes another $250k a year for being an arizona resident...

As the guy who was on here as recently as a year ago saying I thought he was still a decent longshot for 300 wins--as long as he was still pitching well, which he was--well, he disabused me of that notion last season. This seems like a very iffy signing, although I assume he'll cost next to nothing (and maybe other teams are mostly footing the bill).

clemenza, Wednesday, 8 January 2025 03:59 (eight months ago)

I had forgotten he was a FA, I don't think I heard his name once this offseason. Looks like a can't lose deal for the Giants both on the field and at the box office, there aren't many bad one year deals, he's a HOFer, he'll be playing in a pitcher's park, he hasn't played for an NL team except for that cup of coffee with the Mets.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 8 January 2025 06:51 (eight months ago)

I was also down on the Sale signing last year, so my track record on aging starters isn't great.

clemenza, Wednesday, 8 January 2025 11:56 (eight months ago)

As I've said many times, I have no idea how to gauge these deals:

https://www.sportsnet.ca/mlb/article/blue-jays-vladimir-guerrero-jr-avoid-arbitration-with-one-year-28-5m-deal/

So it drags out for another year. I've been all over the place, so anything I say will contradict some other thing I said three or six or 15 months ago. Right now, I guess I hope a) he has a phenomenal year, and then b) says "Fuck you, you could have signed me three years ago" and then some other team pays him four or five hundred million. I'd be okay with that.

clemenza, Friday, 10 January 2025 05:40 (eight months ago)

I have idea how to gauge it either, because in these situations any normal team would either trade him or sign him to extension. I guess the Jays feel good about themselves that they're hedging their bets and keeping their options open. At the same time they might think they're doing great things for players by avoiding arbitration and paying out record high one year deals.

None of this masks the fact that they have no real strategy for winning next year or in the long term. I haven't the slightest clue what their plan is.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 10 January 2025 13:53 (eight months ago)

What are the ripple effects of this (Bo, etc.)? Are they still trying to add Arenado or Alonso or somebody?

clemenza, Friday, 10 January 2025 14:23 (eight months ago)

It was reported the Jays are going to offer Vlad a new extension offer much closer to his asking price after the arb number was reached

gyac, Friday, 10 January 2025 15:10 (eight months ago)

i think it's understood Bo wants to test free agency, so Vlad is their only hope. their "plan" for next year feel a lot how they approached things when they took the team over and it was obvious Bautista was gassed and their rotation was not up to the job... pretend they still have a competitive team and then fire sale any asset that has any value when the fans get fed up. tho they did do a solid job getting some promising young guys with last season' mini sell off.
that said, i think they still could have a shot at a wild card spot, they just need a bat to give Vlad some support. as nice a pick-up as Gimenez was, they've been overly focused on defence/run-prevention. a bat, hope someone like Clase, Loperfido, Barger, Orelvis or Roden step up and pray the bullpen can keep their shit together. i'm not entirely gloomy about their '25 season.

xpost: after last off seasons debacle, i am not going to put much faith in any reporting (i honestly really came away fucking hating most baseball journos who aren't Jeff Passan)

With regards to Verlander vs Sale as a signing, I certainly did not think the latter would do what he did in 2024 but while his stats in 2023 were superficially less than completely impressive, he put together a lot of really dominant performances with a ton of Ks, and I think his overall line was a bit corrupted by his really rough early season struggles. Verlander this past season simply was a disaster down the stretch and unlike Sale it seemed pretty clear from his statistical line that his skill set has abandoned him.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 11 January 2025 18:46 (eight months ago)

I know that Toronto's bullpen was horrible last year but I think the team has much bigger problems than short relief. This is all too typical of their front office, they try too hard to make "clever" deals that will look like a steal in a couple of years if they happen to work out. As opposed to putting together the pieces for a winning ballclub.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 13 January 2025 09:21 (seven months ago)

I mean, they've had a big FA signing ("big" as in a 2nd tier) every year for the last 4 years now, plus smaller FA deals and trading for Chapman, Varsho and Berrios then extending Berrios. they've made a legit effort to build the club and their "clever" deals seem to work out ok. i think there's two issues here: the young talent we pinned our hopes on didn't pan out so hot (Vlad has been up and down value-wise, Manoah Pearson and Biggio were busts and Bo runs way too hot/cold and should be a 2b) and management seems to get over focused on things like defence or bullpen and then over correct. like trading away Teo, for example, on paper it might have been a fair value deal - but there might have been better ways to improve our pen and corner OF defence other than trading away an essential bat from our lineup.

I basically agree with all that, but these things didn't all happen at the same time. In 2020-2021 they had a young offensive core that looked like it would dominate for years, but by 2024 it was clear that ship had sailed. They needed to shift gears, but Plan B was to wait for the offense to bounce back while shoring up the pitching and defense. That didn't work either. Expecting the best case outcome isn't much of a strategy -- either rebuild or retool. They don't want to commit to either.

well, san diego and toronto are not big sports media markets in the grand scheme of things

not sure i fully agree with this. Toronto is the media centre for an entire country (about the population of California) and the 4th largest city in North America. that said, if he was signing with the Maple Leafs the media attention would be insane - but baseball will always be second fiddle to hockey here. and sometime the Raps. but the volume can really get turned up if you're making headlines here – just think about all the attention that Ohtani nonsense got. and Bautista is still getting local endorsement deals!
what someone pointed out tho, is that the team is owned by Rogers, who also own their own sports network and a Canadian metric fuckload of other media outlets; so he could rely on a fair amount of soft/friendly media coverage, outside of their rival TSN and the howler monkeys at the Sun.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 14 January 2025 23:47 (seven months ago)

i can't attest to the media scrutiny in toronto/canada and i'm sure he would command as much of it as any blue jay, but we don't associate toronto and san diego w/ the "pressure" of playing in new york, boston, philly, LA etc. dallas is a top 5 media market but nobody thinks corey seager was jumping into the shark tank by signing w/ the rangers. if he was dak prescott however...

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 15 January 2025 00:04 (seven months ago)

I assume its like that for the Maple Leafs.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Wednesday, 15 January 2025 02:14 (seven months ago)

Toronto is a big media market in the Canadian scheme of things. But across MLB as a whole, where does Toronto rank in terms of (inter)national coverage? Definitely in the lower third of MLB teams.

Part of that is straight up business sense -- ESPN isn't in Canada, so they never broadcast Jays games and don't really cover the team because their fans won't see it.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 15 January 2025 09:23 (seven months ago)

i was referring to what his agent said in december:

Roki Sasaki's agent Joel Wolfe says that Sasaki signing with a small- to mid-market team could be "more beneficial for him as a soft landing":

"Might be, I'm not saying it will be - but I really don't know how he looks at it yet" pic.twitter.com/ML1JGgkpOn

— SNY (@SNYtv) December 10, 2024

if that were true, padres would be a very odd choice as i think they have the second biggest media coverage in japan following the dodgers due to darvish. and of course you don't go to the dodgers to escape japanese press.

re: the US, i've always just assumed the padres are a relatively big market in the US due to proximity to LA but *shrug*

no idea about toronto but population-wise it's a top 5 city in us/canada although i bet it lags vancouver as far as asian/japanese expats go

in retrospect sasaki's agent playing up the market size seems just like good bait to get teams interested, but in the end just seems silly. the difference in signing money is marginal, couple of million at best which isn't significant at all compared to what he would have commanded if he had stayed in NPB for a couple more years. what was the point of all this if sasaki's gonna get the same sized contract wherever he goes. in fact if he goes to the dodgers his arm's gonna fall off before he gets that $$$ free agent contract. best of luck to sasaki.

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 15 January 2025 14:27 (seven months ago)

Ok what the FUCK is going on with Pete Alonso

The Mets made what they perceived as a last-ditch effort to sign Pete Alonso by offering him a three-year contract in the $68 million to $70 million range and, when that was rejected, began their pivot away from their slugging first baseman, The Post has learned.

I mean, cmon they are surely not doing this for 3B

The current plan is to shift Mark Vientos to first base and have Luisangel Acuña, Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio vie for third base.

gyac, Friday, 17 January 2025 00:22 (seven months ago)

ronny mauricio does not have a functioning knee

, Friday, 17 January 2025 01:50 (seven months ago)

it feels like just bargaining to me. the only thing thats actually changed is the +$8M in salary they’re taking on but it also sends a clear message that any remaining salary capacity could be very quickly allocated to tanner scott et al if alonso/boras don’t come down a little.

if alonso is willing to meet the mets at $23M AAV then i’m sure cohen wouldn’t mind eating whatever the luxury tax implications of winker’s $8M are

, Friday, 17 January 2025 01:53 (seven months ago)

mookieproof, Friday, 17 January 2025 03:11 (seven months ago)

Absolutely! I was reacting more to the Mets proposed pivot at 3B than the prospect of not having Alonso.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Friday, 17 January 2025 12:29 (seven months ago)

It’s got to be a bluff calling move. The Mets beat writer Mark Healey just said “no other team has offered Alonso a contract”. But according to the Athletic the Blue Jays are very interested in acquiring Alonso for their lineup with the possibility of keeping and moving Vlad Jr to 3B (!) so I guess if that’s real then we might see what they offer?

gyac, Friday, 17 January 2025 12:40 (seven months ago)

I do not believe the Atlantic. Not one bit. Vlad was so horrible at 3b. I would not be able to watch the blue jays play baseball anymore if they moved Vlad to 3rd

idgi

the posting process meant that there was only so much money sasaki could be offered (and the dodgers were at the high end of that small scale, so it's not like anyone else could significantly out-bid them). they already have ohtani and translation processes in place; it's not like going to cincinnati or pittsburgh where he'd be the only japanese guy in hundreds of miles. they're the best team in baseball and they play in a city that people find appealing. their manager is half-japanese! why *wouldn't* he go there?

i mean i too find it disappointing, but i don't see why this would require tampering -- sounds like sour grapes simply because the dodgers had more to offer this particular guy

You also must have missed his agent’s repeated insistence that “He might prefer a small market team…he prioritises development”. It’s very boring to have this circus if the player already knows where he wants to go.

Unrelated but this is a good writeup re early posting:

The Roki Sasaki situation is complicated. It’s the giant elephant of the offseason.

gyac, Saturday, 18 January 2025 02:38 (seven months ago)

The only tampering that led to this deal is 680mil deffered. I just don't buy the Dodgers being boneheaded enough to jeopardise a signing like this with any legally questionable movements. Did ohtani and yamamoto hit up his phone and have a all too friendly dinner? Maybe. Rose-coloured glasses and all, but I see this the same way I saw the Ohtani deal: there's no way this gets signed if there's any evidence that could void it. The dodgers just seem too competent for that (sorry to say everyone)

H.P, Saturday, 18 January 2025 02:50 (seven months ago)

4real tho, the ohtani differed contract is the real point of interest for every dodgers signing since then. They've been a different FO since. I might be backtracking on some posts from last year by saying this: but if you're going to get pissed at the dodgers here, you should give 50% of that sentiment to ohtani (if it is true that he's the one that floated the bonkers deal).

H.P, Saturday, 18 January 2025 02:52 (seven months ago)

Not to play the room or anything but I feel it's worth me saying as the big doyer bad guy round these parts: yeah the song and dance was ridiculous given the circumstances. Don't know what Roki or his agent could have gained through it? I'll give him credit that maybe he *genuinely* was undecided, but just... you can keep that to yourself you know?

H.P, Saturday, 18 January 2025 02:56 (seven months ago)

i'm not sure if there was anything suspicious with the Roki signing or not – but i will say that the reasoning that the Dodgers are too big/successful to do something as stupid as that, don't hold water for me. i would feel like the bigger the club, the more arrogant they would likely feel; in a "too big to fail" sense – punishing a huge market club like that would be "bad for baseball".
anyways, again, before someone jumps down my throat, not saying i think there was anything suspicious going on at all.

triste et cassé (gyac), Thursday, 6 February 2025 12:23 (seven months ago)

I wish that were true, but I bet this deal was the most AAV anyone was offering him for two years.

Pete chose the wrong time to have a down year + the market shifted a little + Stearns too smart to overpay.

It remains to be seen whether Pete should have taken the 7/$158M they offered a little over a year ago. If Pete has a monster year he can opt out and might get paid. Otherwise, I'm not sure of his chances exceeding $104M the five years after this deal is over.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Thursday, 6 February 2025 12:31 (seven months ago)

Market didn’t value first basemen at all. I’m not sure he was worth more to any team than the Mets but the Blue Jays apparently offered him more. Definitely that 7 years extension is the best offer he was ever going to get, but it likely works out better for the Mets that he didn’t.

triste et cassé (gyac), Thursday, 6 February 2025 12:47 (seven months ago)

maybe i'm too much of a homer but i do think pete was pressing last year because of his bet on himself. abysmal with RISP and most of his stats came from really low leverage situations.

it did feel like the homer off devin really unlocked something. like when he hit the 3 run shot off flaherty in the bottom of the first in game 5, that absolutely did not feel like something pete would have done during the season.

maybe now that he's got this behind him he'll be a little more free and easy this year. plus batting behind soto can't hurt

z_tbd, Tuesday, 11 February 2025 21:46 (seven months ago)

I had a nightmare he joined the dodgers last night

H.P, Tuesday, 11 February 2025 22:35 (seven months ago)

You do have to mark it down as the funniest possible option though

H.P, Tuesday, 11 February 2025 22:36 (seven months ago)

On a related note: Kenley Jansen to the Angels, 10M one year

H.P, Tuesday, 11 February 2025 22:38 (seven months ago)

And Kershaw back too! (Though no surprise there)

triste et cassé (gyac), Thursday, 13 February 2025 05:19 (six months ago)

Also good for Pivetta landing in SD. He’s going to get some protection from his HR problem in that park. Bregman and Pivetta were both QO guys, because they both signed within hours of each other they can afford to sign Bregman for essentially a year if he opts out. Once the news came out that he was going to think of short term deals, Fenway made the most sense for his swing. He can statpad for a year and go back to the market in a year if he wishes.

Underrated is how much Devers did not want to move off 3B. Passan confirmed the reports out of Boston all winter, that they wanted him for 2B but I still think they’ll play him at 3B some and DH Devers more.

But Jesus, I did not think Craig had it in him.

triste et cassé (gyac), Thursday, 13 February 2025 05:30 (six months ago)

Bregman has some balls to take that offer, didn't he have 6Y, 150M offers from at least one other team?

I suppose he is thinking that he's guaranteed 120M no matter what, but if has two good years he'll make 80M and then opt out for a new 3-4 year deal that will pay him more (over the entire 5-6 year starting next season) than he could have signed for today.

I would be surprised if he opts out after one year, unless he has a monster season and the Red Sox make a playoff run. If he puts up "just" a very good 3-4 WAR, would he really get more money next offseason that what he could have gotten now?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 13 February 2025 11:47 (six months ago)

I think playing at Fenway should pad his numbers enough for him to get the big contract to retire on somewhere next year and he’d sacrifice aav for years. IIRC the free agent market isn’t great next year for bats. He’d be doing the same as Chapman and Snell last season.

Personally, I hope he opts out.

triste et cassé (gyac), Thursday, 13 February 2025 11:58 (six months ago)

Chapman and Snell didn't receive 150M offers last offseason. If they had, they would have taken them.

If he has a good season in 2025, there's no way he's getting a six year deal when he's a year older, when many teams were reluctant to sign him this year for the long term.

I hope he has a great season and finds a way to make more bank, but he's taking a gamble. I assume he's really confident about hitting in Fenway and the team's chances this year.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 13 February 2025 14:40 (six months ago)

Passan says he’ll be playing second base.
Guess I’ll be moving Campbell down on my prospect list

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 13 February 2025 14:56 (six months ago)

think about it this way, he’ll be a top 10 prospect for a whole nother year

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 13 February 2025 14:59 (six months ago)

Campbell will play this year. He’s also capable of playing every position in the outfield. Just means they don’t have him there on day 1 when he’s had barely a month in triple A.

triste et cassé (gyac), Thursday, 13 February 2025 15:15 (six months ago)

I'm actually a little surprised he doesn't have any HOF'ers on his through-age-30 similarity list, just a lot of good players. With 40 WAR, I'd say a bit of rebound puts him back on a HOF course--and he has been 4.0-5.0 the past three seasons.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6134352/2025/02/13/alex-bregman-red-sox-astros-the-windup/

buried in there --

Last May, I wrote about the amount of time that Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon had missed over the previous three-plus seasons. Trout hasn’t played since. Rendon played 38 games in July through September, hitting .191/.297/.244 (.541 OPS) with no home runs in 155 plate appearances.

Perhaps as a result of those numbers, his place in the Angels’ Opening Day lineup was no longer a foregone conclusion — even if he were healthy.

Well, we can put that question to rest. Rendon suffered a setback in his rehab that required hip surgery. He’ll miss the entire 2025 season.

omar little, Thursday, 13 February 2025 17:23 (six months ago)

only $77,142,856 left on his contract!

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 13 February 2025 17:31 (six months ago)

It really takes a lot to be a worse FA signee than Josh Hamilton but congratulations Anthony. It’s crazy how the angels have whiffed on those massive deals almost every single time. Pujols, Mo Vaughn, Justin Upton..

omar little, Thursday, 13 February 2025 18:02 (six months ago)

… taking on the Vernon Wells contract. They love their disaster contract vets

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 13 February 2025 18:24 (six months ago)

Feb. 13: Kershaw is guaranteed $7.5MM on a one-year deal, reports Robert Murray of FanSided. He’ll unlock a $1MM bonus for making his 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th starts of the season. The deal also contains active roster bonuses; he’ll add an additional $2.5MM for 30 days on the active roster, $1MM for 60 days and $1MM for 90 days.

In all, that $7.5MM base can more than double to $16MM so long as Kershaw starts at least 16 games and stays healthy for about half the season.

omar little, Thursday, 13 February 2025 19:51 (six months ago)

Big deferrals in the Bregman contract. Ends up being about 90mil all up.

H.P, Thursday, 13 February 2025 21:26 (six months ago)

of course the one year Rendon was still good was his first with the angels, the shortened 60 game season.

From MLBTR:

Over the past four seasons, Rendon has played 205 of a possible 648 games (31.6%) and posted an anemic .231/.329/.336 batting line. Dating back to 2021 alone, Rendon has had a staggering 12 different IL placements. This hip procedure will account for his 13th. He’s missed time with a near-interminable list of injuries which, in order, reads as follows: knee contusion, hamstring strain, hip impingement, wrist inflammation, wrist surgery, groin strain, wrist contusion, shin contusion, hamstring strain, back inflammation, oblique strain — and now hip surgery.

Amazingly, Bregman is the first position player Craig Breslow has signed to a major league deal since the Red Sox hired him in October 2023. That’s why we keep trying. You never know when lucky number 13 is going to pay off. If you just stick to your guns, keep lowballing free agent after free agent, one of them will eventually be so beaten down by the process that he will accept your terms. It’s truly an uplifting tale of hope in these bleak times.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 14 February 2025 16:53 (six months ago)

red sox had more 'we tried' than the jays? wow!

seems like there's quite a few unsigned players this year, as spring training starts, more than usual? just thinking of guys like lance lynn and kyle gibson, typical 4th starters for mediocre teams, both teamless so far

A piece on mlb.com about the possible availability of the Twins' Joe Ryan (typically, the first awareness I've had of him; didn't pitch against the Jays in the 2023 playoffs, though even if he had, it's not like I would have remembered). Stats are uniformly impressive this year...Toronto wants you.

steve shasta i beg you

In baseball, hot stove league is the sport's off-season. The phrase does not denote an actual league, but instead calls up images of baseball fans gathering around a hot stove during the cold winter months, discussing their favorite baseball teams and players.

you can call this a 'transaction' or even 'deadline deal' -- insofar as anyone actually cares about dane dunning -- but no stoves are involved
