It'd be nice, but pretty expensive, plus you have to do what Thermo's girlfriend did (I believe they're seeing two of the games), which is to treat it like a Taylor Swift concert--and I haven't got the patience to sit there hitting refresh for 30 minutes.

This is the first Jays-Yankees postseason series ever; Seattle and NY have faced each other a number of times, I think, so there are a few backstories there (led by this, of course):

DUDE
Not sure what you're referring to, outside of the mini-slump when they lost six of seven, they played fine. 15-10 in September, most of the losses to good teams (Boston, NY), won out on the final weekend when they had to, bullpen started showing signs of coming together. Even with the offense "crashing" after Bichette got injured, they still scored the second-most runs in the league.

Following is my liveblog of the bottom of the 2nd because I was riveted by the constant CounsellCam™️, I didn’t know it would last that long. Hopefully they put someone in who can get some outs, my arm might fall off by the 5th.
Contreras base hit.Yelich base hit.Craig Counsell cam. Displeasure.Andrew Vaughn at plate; Counsell cam. Vaughn base hit. Bases loaded no outs. Sal Frelick at plate. “His former manager Craig Counsell once called him the hit collector”.Frelick f7. Shot of Civale warming up in bullpen. “You know they (Brew crew) traded Civale to get Andrew Vaughn.”Durbin bloop scores two. Shot of Counsell going down the steps of the dugout taking his cap off and scratching his head. Cut to Pat Murphy looking pink and pleased. Counsell in the dugout staring into space.“The break doesn’t seem to have hurt the Brewers. Maybe the Cubs needed more time.”Perkins grounds out to first. Shot of Counsell leaning up at the bottom of the dugout with one knee up on the steps. Hat still off.Joey Ortiz walks. Bases loaded again.Counsell comes out to the mound to finally pull Soroka. Boos ring around him, falling like a barrel of upended cheese curds.
Civale in game. Churio up. Bases loaded two outs. Churio grounds to third, runs out the infield single from Matt Shaw’s noodle arm. Another run scores.
Wait, is Churio injured? They’re pulling him, presumably as a preventative. They don’t need his bat to win this one. Isaac Collins in.
“Churio has driven in three of the Milwaukee nine.”
Message from my friend in our baseball chat group. “You could be having the worst day of your life and Craig Counsell is having a worse one.”
Turang up. Bases loaded two outs. Civale finally strikes him out. This inning has lasted ten years. Children have reached the age of majority. Craig Counsell’s soul left the building years ago.

he was out a month last time with that, the look on his face seemed like maybe he knew it was bad, but that's just reading between the lines. we def need him so I really hope he's not out long.
nice outing for Civale at least, if the Cubs are looking for a silver lining :)

Dodgers fans are bellyaching about "cheap hits and shitty defense" but both Schwarbs & Bader narrowly missed homeruns, deep warning track flies. That's the one thing anyone will have to face against Detroit if they advance: you'll get Skubal twice in a 7-game series. So if he's on his game--he did have one poor start down the stretch--you've got to win four out of the other five.

Should I start venting now, or save it...It's almost like Schneider decided he'd do an experiment: let's take out the guy pitching a no-hitter after 78 pitches, and we'll throw out the back end of our bullpen and see what happens.

To be fair, you, me, and a drunk Tyler Heineman should be able to house a twelve run lead in the sixth.

True enough, I just think he could've let him finish the sixth and at least have a shot at the rookie strikeout record. But I agree, it they were to blow this, it wouldn't fall on Schneider.

I can't be the only Jays fan who, mixed in with all the amazement and whooping, is just a little queasy about the fact that we just scored 36 runs in three games. The Jays scored 798 runs this year, fourth most in baseball (helped by that ridiculous Colorado series where we scored 45/3), so they do have some punch, but the '27 Yankees or '75 Reds we're not. And when this team goes cold, they go ice cold and stay there for a week. So hoping this doesn't set the stage for that, either in this series or, potentially, the next one.

Santander got a big hit tonight, but was just a matter of time till that happened--he has no business playing the field, outfield defense being one the Jays' biggest strengths.

I was in transit for five minutes earlier, so I missed that play Barger flubbed before the Judge HR--yuck...I'd be very surprised if the Jays won tomorrow. I am deeply relieved that, if all else fails, we'll have home field for a G5. I still remember the Jays basically conceding that in 2015 when they gave Buehrle game 162 to try to get his 200 innings. They ended up going down 2-0 on the road in the ALCS, then they lost G6 on the road. So that may--may--save them in the end this time. But tonight will be hard to shake off.

― FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 8 October 2025 03:58 (three weeks ago)
The Jays hadn't lost a game all year that they led by four or more runs? Somehow I was unaware of that bit of trivia. Time up update the Hoffman rule? Or time to count to count down the hours until Hoffman coughs up six runs? He didn't pitch in games 2 and 3, clearly he'll be pitching multiple innings tonight. Twice the chances for a blow-up outing, I guess...
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 8 October 2025 06:47 (three weeks ago)
Time *to* update the rule, that is
Jays are going with Varland tonight: 4-3, 2.97 vs. (Schlittler) 4-3, 2.96.

― 龜, Wednesday, 8 October 2025 14:16 (three weeks ago)
If you're pulling your starter in the third then it's pretty much a bullpen game anyway. I don't think Scherzer with the way he pitched toward the end of the season, would have done better than Bieber.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 8 October 2025 14:19 (three weeks ago)

wow that's an interesting take, i'd frame it more like:
Schlittler is pitching on 5 days rest, following one of the most impressive starts we've seen this postseason.
Varland will be pitching on 12 hours rest, after being charged with the loss last night allowing a 3 run HR to Judge and a solo HR to Jazz during the epic BJs bullpen collapse.

Obviously I'm aware that those numbers were arrived at very differently; the coincidence is still interesting.
― clemenza, Wednesday, 8 October 2025 14:37 (three weeks ago)
Lots of second-guessing on the radio about pulling Bieber too early. I was okay with that--he wasn't pitching well at all--but one guy framed it in a way that has me second-guessing too: you have a better chance of Bieber "navigating" his way through a rough start than handing it over to Toronto's bullpen for the next 15 innings.
― clemenza, Wednesday, 8 October 2025 14:45 (three weeks ago)
the main issue is that Schnider's been managing the team like he has a 4th starter. i get that he didn't want to over use Yesavage and the Bieber didn't look great and that Fluharty gave up some baserunners and so on... but man. the pen has been shaky enough as it is, we can't lean on them to pitch 15 innings in two days. i'd imagine Varland will open and Lauer will throw the bulk (maybe 4 if we're lucky) and then it's back into the churn. also was annoyed from the onset Santander was in the field and not at DH. unless Springer has a malade we're not aware of, he should have been in right last night.
xopst - exactly. i was saying (possibly shouting) it last night as it was happening.
― FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 8 October 2025 14:48 (three weeks ago)
(xposts) Reality caught up to Bowden Francis this year: he was pretty good through his first five starts, then for the next nine he gave up 47 hits and 18 walks in 36 innings and carried a 7.93 ERA. And that was the end of his season.
― clemenza, Wednesday, 8 October 2025 14:52 (three weeks ago)
Completely agree about Bieber, he was OK in the first two innings but they got to him in the third. They pulled him with the tying run coming to the plate and that's usually a good time to pull your starter in a playoff game. But when you know that the next day is a bullpen game, you have to look at the bigger picture. Bieber had only thrown 56 pitches, he could have pulled it together and pitched, say, into the fifth with a 6-3 lead. The game might have turned out differently.
I'm assuming Schneider didn't do that because he didn't want Bieber struggling through 90-100 pitches, which would make him unavailable (most likely) for a potential Game 5. This way, the Game 5 plan could be Gausman for five innings, Bieber for two, and some combination of relievers that don't implode tonight for two. That's a plan I can live with.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 8 October 2025 16:50 (three weeks ago)
More positive thoughts:
1) The Jays have obliterated every Yankee SP.2) I have no idea how Judge homered off an 100 MPH pitch in on his hands, other than the fact that he's Aaron Freaking Judge. That can't possibly happen again.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 8 October 2025 16:53 (three weeks ago)
As they said last night, since the advent of Statcast, no one--not once--has hit a pitch that fast (99 mph) and that inside for a HR.
― clemenza, Wednesday, 8 October 2025 17:06 (three weeks ago)
If it goes to a G5, the Jays will also have the it's-impossible-to-figure-out-sports rule going for them. Everything at the point would strongly suggest the Yankees winning; that's when the complete opposite happens.
All in all, I still think I'd prefer to somehow win G4.
― clemenza, Wednesday, 8 October 2025 17:08 (three weeks ago)
They still put up six runs and knocked out the opposing SP in a losing effort.
You would think that if they can score 6-7 runs again, that should be enough even for the parade of clowns we call a bullpen, with nobody throwing more than one inning other than Lauer and Hoffman.
You would think.

User Sharivari has made me aware of the unusual number of serial killers that come from Washington State and so I’m on Wikipedia and
Linda Laura Hazzard (née Burfield; December 18, 1867 – June 24, 1938), nicknamed the "Starvation Doctor", was an American quack, swindler, and convicted serial killer noted for her promotion of fasting, pummeling and hours-long enemas as treatments. In 1911, Hazzard was found guilty of manslaughter in the state of Washington and was sentenced to 2 to 20 years of hard labor for killing at least 15 people for financial gain at a sanitarium she operated near Seattle in the early 20th century. She was released on parole after only serving two years and later, on the condition that she move to New Zealand, received a full pardon from Governor Ernest Lister in 1916. Hazzard died at 70 after subjecting herself to her treatment methods

i don't have much hope of the cubs winning this series, i never really did - their only real advantage is slugging and that's been a lot quieter as of late, while the brewers are so tough and consistent. but i hope they can win this game today at wrigley. don't want them to get swept.
― na (NA), Wednesday, 8 October 2025 21:59 (three weeks ago)
Haven't been able to watch today, but I know the ideal situation for the Jays, if they can somehow manage to win, was for the Tigers to win in 5 with Skubal going twice.

The athletic has a whole article about how the Brewers are a relatively short team???
The average big-league hitter in 2025 registered at 72.3 inches, just north of 6 feet, according to Elias. With the exception of Christian Yelich, the 6-3 face of the franchise, no Brewers regular exceeds that standard. Among the players, the lack of height does not go unnoticed, especially when watching Frelick, catcher William Contreras (5-10), first baseman Andrew Vaughn (5-10), shortstop Joey Ortiz (5-10), outfielder Isaac Collins (5-8) and third baseman Caleb Durbin (5-7) exit the diamond.

i know that analytics shifted heavily in favor of three true outcomes ball in the 2010s, home runs uber alles, but i hear the stat about the jays as being the best contact hitting team in baseball with lowest strikeout rate and wondering if there's an analytics way to quantify what offensive advantage that might convey
― 龜, Thursday, 9 October 2025 13:25 (two weeks ago)
Contact hitting teams have occasionally done very well (2014-5 Royals, post-2017 Astros) but those teams hit HR's too (the Royals did in the postseason, less so in the regular season).
The Jays outhomered the Yankees 9 to 4, which was just as important as their contact hitting. They're not a small ball team.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 9 October 2025 13:46 (two weeks ago)
Yeah I’m already sick of that myth. The Brew Crew might be the only true small ball team still in there and they still have Yelich and Churio who are slugger types (Churio is still very young and will grow into his power).
― Marsee playground (gyac), Thursday, 9 October 2025 13:52 (two weeks ago)
I was told they didn’t need him to win?
I think the Jays are "small ball" more in the sense that they strike out so little--yesterday against Schlittler (who still pitched really well), all season long--and maybe also that 5-10 HR guys like Clement and Lukes and Straw contribute so much. But they have decent power with Springer, Vlad, Varsho, and Barger.
― clemenza, Thursday, 9 October 2025 14:39 (two weeks ago)

― (•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 9 October 2025 16:11 (two weeks ago)
Out and about today--in Toronto, no less, for a dental appointment--but one follow-up on the Jays and small ball. I was thinking that that's a concept that evolves over time. We're certainly not a small-ball team like the '81 A's, and not even like the '87 Cardinals, who finished second in the NL in runs with only one guy (Jack Clark) hitting more than 12 HR, one guy stealing 100 (Vince Coleman; 250 as a team), and Willie McGee knocking in a 100 with 11 HR. But I think we're a 2025 version of that. The Yankees live and die by the HR; the Jays hit them in bunches sometimes (and that's when we score double-digits), but they don't. Yesterday was a more typical game: five runs on a lot of singles and doubles, taking advantage of a huge error, and production from the bottom half of the order.
― clemenza, Thursday, 9 October 2025 18:01 (two weeks ago)

― Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 9 October 2025 19:48 (two weeks ago)
A true old-school small-ball team would do things like automatically call for a sacrifice bunt in the third or fourth inning if their ace was on the mound; I don't think that kind of thing exists anymore, least of all when your ace will be gone after six or seven innings.

Still trying to get my head around how ugly that play was--it was like three errors in one: 1) mishandles ball; 2) throws to the wrong base; 3) runner's there anyway, but as a finishing touch throws wildly. I suppose I've seen that before, but obviously not in a situation of that magnitude.

Listening to Jayson Stark on Blair & Barker.
1) Barker makes the same point as gyac about Harper and Turner.
2) Stark compared Kerkering's situation to Mitch Williams after the '93 Series (acknowledging the obvious difference between an NLDS and a WS). Williams never threw another pitch for the Phillies; he and Barker both thought the best course is to trade him--not as punishment or anything, but rather to spare him.

Almost unanimity in everything I heard today that I should be rooting for the Tigers, who'd be much easier for the Jays (especially with Skubal pitching tonight and possibly limited to one game in the ALCS). Truth is, I don't much care. I guess I believe that, in the end, you'll win the WS if you were meant to win the WS. If it's the Tigers, I'll be thinking about 1987, if the Mariners, 1977.

Rooting for the Brewers tonight. They're my second choice behind the Jays, and I also think that'd give us the four best teams left standing. (Or at least in the context of two leagues--no idea how the Jays/Mariners stack up against he NL teams that have been eliminated. I kept hearing about how much better the NL was this year, but the AL won interleague play 1,222-1,208.)

belated congrats to the brew crew, tbh they deserved the win after being so consistent in the second half when the cubs went cold. the cubs did better than i expected getting to a game 5, it really seemed like the wrigley vibes threw the brewers off. but i will be rooting for the brewers over the dodgers for sure.
