Dodgers in 7; I'll take some tension

H.P, Tuesday, 21 October 2025 04:37 (two weeks ago)

Honestly, I'd be surprised if the Dodgers were to win in fewer than six games; I suspect the Jays will be playing as loose as a team can in the WS. I'll vote Jays in seven, the only vote that would really make sense for a Toronto fan.

clemenza, Tuesday, 21 October 2025 04:38 (two weeks ago)

I'm voting for the Blue Jays to sweep (A's vs Reds, never forget).

OK, they won't seeep but I'm voting for ir anyway.

Andy K, Tuesday, 21 October 2025 13:08 (two weeks ago)

hoping for Dodgers in 5 so they can celebrate the win on their home field this time

(•̪●) (carne asada), Tuesday, 21 October 2025 13:22 (two weeks ago)

to me this feels like a classic goliath/underdog 5 game series (jays win game 1 then lose 4) but very happy to be proven wrong

, Tuesday, 21 October 2025 13:50 (two weeks ago)

reading the playoffs threads has made wonder if jays fans are actual more negative/paranoid/sadist than mets fans. y’all are working through a lot of feelings in real time.

A lot of PTSD from the leafs. The non-hockey crossover fans tend to be much more optimistic

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 21 October 2025 16:37 (two weeks ago)

I was wondering if that was part of it

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 21 October 2025 17:36 (two weeks ago)

I'm trying to be optimistic so am going with Jays in 6, seems technically possible.

silverfish, Tuesday, 21 October 2025 17:49 (two weeks ago)

Even with the Jays' back-to-backs, they too have had some crushing defeats: '85, '87 (especially), and back-to-back ALCS losses in '15/16. I honestly believe that those first three teams there (not '16, which was the Cubs' year all the way) were the best teams in baseball that year. And lots of time spent in the wilderness, too.

The Leafs are a huge part of it, though, yes. Jeff Blair was making a big deal about Vladdy toying with karma by showing up to the stadium yesterday afternoon in an Auston Matthews jersey, causing Kevin Barker (from Virginia) to roll his eyes. "You just don't understand," Blair said. He was right.

I'm not sure that a six or seven game series will be good for my sanity. I kind of want it to be over in four or five games, for either team.

Yesavage to start for the Jays.
just wild. started the season in single-A. threw a total of 98 innings between A, A+, AA & AAA before making the bigs. just three regular season starts followed by three playoff starts. and is now the blue jays world series game one starter.

wow, lol, wow

Noob Layman (WmC), Thursday, 23 October 2025 20:23 (two weeks ago)

why do the Blue Jays have home field advantage in this WS?

No it's not because of any "This time it counts" All Star game shenanigans, it's because TOR's regular season record (94-68) was one game better than LAD's (93-69).

Flashback to 8/10/25, when Toronto was on the verge of being swept in Chavez Ravine.

The Blue Jays had a 5-4 one run lead when they called on Mason Fluharty to close out the game...
with the bases loaded...
with only one out...
and Shohei Ohtani at bat, and Mookie Betts on-deck.

Between losing Gimenez's glove and putting Springer in the field, I'm happy they've gone this way. I just hope Springer's up to it--I thought he'd be in left, and assume he will be when it's Lukes instead of Schneider.

This is great. I'm having to scream silently so the cat doesn't attack me, but wow, this team never stops amazing me.

One more at least (oops for George...).

Tell us more about the cat

colonic interrogation (gyac), Saturday, 25 October 2025 05:14 (one week ago)

I've always been a little skittish around cats, but John and Marie's cat is very friendly and was sound asleep on the couch near me for part of the game. I yelled out when Varsho got hit, woke the cat up, and he was clearly not very happy--started making "who are you to come here and do that?" noises. I was still comfortable but made sure not to startle him again.

Only Jays fans will know this, but Vladdy's Gatorade-dump during the post-game interviews on the field (Barger and Varsh) was noticably absent tonight. I'm wondering if that was the team's decision or if they were ordered to refrain by the league. (Did they do it in the playoffs? I didn't take notice for some reason.)

clemenza, Saturday, 25 October 2025 05:46 (one week ago)

Varsho, not Varsh--I haven't turned into John Schneider yet.

Re: Geddy Lee, there was an interview with him on CBC, talking about the Jays and the upcoming Rush tour. They showed pictures of him in the crowd at the ALCS, Game 7, sitting behind home plate. Great reaction shot for the Springer HR.

In Dave Stieb's autobiography (published in the late 80's, I read it a million times as a kid), he wrote about being good friends with Geddy Lee. Here's a picture of Stieb and his wife jamming with Lee:

after sleeping on it... doesn't get any better than 'pinch hit grand slam' huh

, Saturday, 25 October 2025 11:29 (one week ago)

Kevin Pillar was talking after the game about how important he thought the first inning was for the Jays. Snell got the first two outs on five pitches; the Jays then loaded the bases and pushed him to 29 pitches. Snell was so well known during his first Cy Young year for rarely going deep into a game; I know he had that great 100-pitch game recently, but clearly Roberts left him in a little too long last night. Toronto, meanwhile, got what they could out of an erratic Yesavage and quickly moved on.

(Posting very much out of character here, I know.)

clemenza, Saturday, 25 October 2025 13:01 (one week ago)

Interesting managing by Roberts last night:

He went to his bench zero times, even leaving in Andy Pages who makes Juan Castro look like Barry Bonds.

For a team that played 10 games across 18 days, only to rest with 6 days off prior to the WS... could it be that rest = rust?

Why would you not go to your bench at all if your starters aren't getting the job done? Or after the game went out of reach, why leave in the guys who are obviously struggling?

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 25 October 2025 20:42 (one week ago)

I thought we were shouting down the “rest = rust” school of thinking?! I made sure not to bring it up last night!

Bo not starting tonight--no surprise. And, not a big deal, Scherzer (G3) and Bieber (G4) have been flip-flopped; they're both a roll of the dice these days.

Weird connection I thought of between '93 and '25...Probably the three most famous garage-band staples are "Louie, Louie," "Wild Thing," and "Gloria." "Wild Thing" was played often on the radio in Toronto for the fews days after Carter's HR off Williams; "Louie, Louie" as used as bumper music on Sportsnet when Varland retires the side.

Is there a Gloria somehow connected with the team?

Watched the game in a restaurant in the north part of the GTA (Vaughn) with a friend. This is something like 20-25 km north of downtown, but we had to try four restaurant/bars before we were able to find a table.

No insights on the game, except that it seemed important when the Jays didn't score at least one run (and preferably two) in that first inning. In 55 years of watching baseball, I'm convinced that the most reliable indicator you're going to lose would be squandered opportunities in the first two innings.

Hanging my hopes on home-field advantage--win one in L.A. and get it back to Toronto. Even if that means we have to face Yamamoto again.

The first two games vs Seattle were horrible, they were outplayed in every fairy of the game. They lost tonight, but it was close most of the way, and Gausman looked really good until giving up those HR's. The bullpen didn't have to work hard, which is good because I expect they'll be throwing a lot of innings in LA.

Glasgow lifetime vs Jays: 1-4 5.82 ERA in 11 starts.

I'm kinda wishing that this series doesn't come to a G6 because we are hosting this elaborate party on Friday and I don't want to be glued to my phone.

Alternatively: the Rogers Centre roof gets stuck open and the game rains out.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 28 October 2025 16:23 (one week ago)

I think the only good thing I came out of yesterday with--we'll see--is that I'm in London right now to buy two Brad Paisley CDs that are in stock used. I liked his anthem last night; heard a trace of Hendrix in the guitar.

clemenza, Tuesday, 28 October 2025 16:27 (one week ago)

I'm trying to figure out who benefits most from both teams having equally shredded pitching staffs (staves?) and I'm thinking it slightly favours the Dodgers who pen sucks anyway - this maybe evens it up a little

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 28 October 2025 16:47 (one week ago)

Also, the Dodgers starters are much better...I've been thinking a lot the last few days about the limitations of Toronto's starters: outside Yesavage, who's still an unknown, we're a staff of good #2 and #3 starters. Gausman gives us a QS (or close) more often than not, but he's just not a guy who's going to do what Yamamoto did the other night (the noticeable exception being the game I was at this summer).

clemenza, Tuesday, 28 October 2025 16:50 (one week ago)

Yeah it's not particularly close in the starter department

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 28 October 2025 16:51 (one week ago)

The only way the Jays win is to get to the starters early. In that respect Yamamoto might have single-handedly done more damage to their chances than anybody

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 28 October 2025 16:52 (one week ago)

(I mean... I say the Dodgers pen sucks but they pitched 13 innings of shutout ball last night)

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 28 October 2025 16:58 (one week ago)

Good question re tonight's availability.

Ohtani's last 3 outings' pitch count: 91, 89*, 100

*this was his worst outing yet still a QS with 3 ERs in 6IP

I think you can count on ~90 pitches from him.

But in terms of sheer pitchcounts across the whole staff, the Blue Jays threw 267 pitches vs. Dodgers 312 pitches.

Toronto had guys like Bassit appearing for 8 pitches and Fluharty for 14. Those guys, especially Bassitt, could step in to eat innings as Fluharty's more of a LOOGY (LO3GY?). I could also see Seranthony looking for redemption.

LA wisely only used Banda & Kershaw for spot matchups, also Dreyer who I've never heard of.

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 28 October 2025 17:02 (one week ago)

I'd imagine Roberts will want Shohei to stay in the game as deep as he can.

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 28 October 2025 17:03 (one week ago)

Shohei likes to sleep about 13-14 hours before a start/in general?? iirc so I’m interested to see what he can pull out tonight.

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 28 October 2025 17:51 (one week ago)

Tempted to say that the Dodgers are teaching teams one way to approach the post-season--above all else, make sure your top four starters are healthy and ready to go just in time for the playoffs--but, uh, that only works if you have the payroll to assemble these four starters.

clemenza, Tuesday, 28 October 2025 17:54 (one week ago)

clemenza, Tuesday, 28 October 2025 17:59 (one week ago)

yeah I'm not convinced there's a lesson there, kind of reminds me of when Miami assembled the Heatles and the whole league was like "we'll just put together our own Big 3 and fill in the blanks" - turns out one major major piece of the puzzle was having LeBron James

frogbs, Tuesday, 28 October 2025 17:59 (one week ago)

clemenza, Tuesday, 28 October 2025 18:00 (one week ago)

Out and about today...Wanted to add one more thing to my earlier post about the Jays starters. The numerous 10-run outbursts the Jays have had in the post-season made their bullpen problems moot for those games, that was very noticeable. But they also papered over the limitations of our starters, that the most we can usually hope for is two-to-four runs over six innings if things go well. Ten-run outbursts paper over a lot.

I guess now is a good time to tell my Freddy Freeman story...well, it's not mine, but a friend of mine. He grew up in Orange County and played Little League with him for a few years. maybe a decade ago we get some good seats next to the opposing dugout during a Braves/Brewers game, which it turns out is because he wants to yell at him before the game and see if he remembers him. and he did! he got the guy's full name correct! I am guessing this was his 1st or 2nd year in the league, when it was clear that he was a pretty decent prospect but his career could've gone either way. so it's been wild for him to see everything that's happened since.

in case you were wondering, little Freddy was apparently very good, I think he was so good that he was 'skipped ahead' - my friend said he was younger than all the other players

My memories of the newspaper world in 1992 and '93 are admittedly sketchy--maybe a 3:00 a.m. finish then would have produced exactly the same front page.

not only does it take a lot of fun out of the game it's also pretty stupid to boot. even with those two games factored in his postseason numbers as a whole aren't particularly good. he's struck out a ton. also he can steal bases which seems like a good argument for trying to keep him off the basepaths in the first place. and its not like the Dodgers lineup is full of scrubs.

frogbs, Tuesday, 28 October 2025 21:46 (one week ago)

Vlad striking out on 3 pitches outside of the zone is setting the tone!

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 29 October 2025 00:14 (one week ago)

I kind of like the idea of Ohtani as SP drawing walks from a strategic level, he's out there focused on the pitcher and the count and the infield fly rule etc., he's not able to relax whereas the other pitchers are chomping down protein chips, piling in zyn pouches, slugging down redbulls and other far more relaxing activities.

Shohei's 4th Earned Run scores. His World Series WPA is still negative despite that game yesterday if you can believe that.

Not sure where you're seeing these numbers. On BR he has 0.47 WPA, 18.43% CPA for his batting, -0.07 WPA and -2.56% for his pitching. His batting WPA is tops in the WS, for both teams, by far. (2nd is Kirk, 3rd is Bichette, surprisingly).

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 29 October 2025 08:20 (one week ago)

That's for the WS only. Maybe your numbers are for the entire playoff run?

That was the ideal win for the Jays, coming off the G3 loss. They got a good start from Bieber and didn't tax their bullpen. They neutralized Ohtani at the plate. Got big hits when they needed them. Bichette looks better with every game.

Remember how mid Yamatoto looked in the first 4 innings of his last start and then turned into Pedro Martinez after the 5th? Yeah, avoid that.

Blue Jays need to do what the Phillies did a couple starts ago with Yamamoto: sit fastball and avoid the offspeed junk. Knock him out early and get to that crippled bullpen: Treinen, Sheehan, Banda, even Kershaw... the sooner you can get to those 9+ ERA postseason guys, the better.

The Dalton Pompey inning...it's going to be rough if they don't win. For what it's worth, I not sure the ball getting lodged in the wall made a big difference (unless it bounced off and rolled away). Second and third, none out, vs. one run in and runner on second...I don't know; I guess they would have tried to sacrifice him to third. All moot now.

Putting aside all my usual nervous chatter, the truth is I was about 97% sure they'd win tonight. Maybe down to 90% as they stepped up in the 9th, but still confident.

Glasnow threw three pitches. I know he warmed up in the bullpen too, but I can't imagine that changes plans.

timellison, Saturday, 1 November 2025 04:38 (six days ago)

Ohtani will start tomorrow, I'm sure of it.

Speaking of 2015...I said how much I like Kevin Pillar in the booth. Before the game tonight, someone asked him what a Blue Jay win would mean for him personally. He talked for three e minutes about how he never really got over 2015, the feeling that the Jays were the best team in baseball that year and that they let the city down in the end; winning this year would finally close the book on that. I know athletes turn it on and off for the camera, but--anyone in Toronto who saw it, back me up on this--I found him to be 100% sincere, and it was actually kind of moving.

clemenza, Saturday, 1 November 2025 05:02 (six days ago)

I was confident too. When Joe Davis said that no team had staged a ninth inning comeback in the playoffs this year, I thought "perfect, this is it".

On the positive side, if I hadn't seen the game and somebody just told me "Yamamoto beat them again, Game 7 tomorrow", I would have shrugged and said "all right, no big surprise there".

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 1 November 2025 05:06 (six days ago)

H.P, Saturday, 1 November 2025 14:58 (six days ago)

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 1 November 2025 17:08 (six days ago)

really pullin for the Blue Jays tonight though, if they lose it's gonna hurt for a while

frogbs, Saturday, 1 November 2025 17:24 (six days ago)

Very different contexts and details, but I've been walking around in a daze today with the words "Branca, Buckner, Barger" echoing in my mind. (Even more different: Bartman.)

Was it really the right call? They didn’t even try to pick it up. It’s supposed to be “lodged” iirc

I was fine in the moment--second and third, none out, and no one got thrown out trying to advance--but if they lose tonight, that question will linger.

The last four G7s have been won by the road team.

clemenza, Saturday, 1 November 2025 17:34 (six days ago)

Posnanski doesn't blame Barger (upon consideration):

At first, I blamed Barger for going Magellan out there — you CANNOT get thrown out on the bases when you are the tying run, for crying out loud — but having watched the play a million times since then, I now believe the play was much more about Kiké’s brilliance than Barger’s baserunning. It looked like a hit off the bat — Statcast™ gave it a 70% hit probability.

Hernández is not fast. But he seemed to move toward the ball before it was even hit. It’s a funny thing about baseball defense — we cherish the diving, sprawling, sliding catches, even if they are prompted by late jumps or bad routes. This one didn’t look spectacular, but it might have been the defensive best play of the World Series. Hernández knew the stakes, he understood every element of the situation, he anticipated the bloop, he made the immediate throw, and even if it didn’t take your breath away, you will never see a better play than that.

Then again, the only reason Barger was even on second base in the first place is that the blast he had hit a minute earlier had somehow wedged at the base of the outfield wall. That turned a possible run-scoring triple into a no-run ground-rule double. Baseball is a game of skill. Baseball is also a game of fortune.

And now, it’s Game Seven.

Not unreasonable, but that "CANNOT" is still non-negotiable.

clemenza, Saturday, 1 November 2025 17:37 (six days ago)

Rule 5.06(c)(7):
“The ball becomes dead and runners advance one base, without liability to be put out, when—
A pitched ball lodges in the umpire’s or catcher’s mask or paraphernalia, and remains out of play.”

Really doesn’t say anything about digging the ball out or how lodged the ball has to be.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Saturday, 1 November 2025 17:45 (six days ago)

Although there is no direct reference to a wall or fence being involved that I could find.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Saturday, 1 November 2025 17:48 (six days ago)

I think that's not the relevant rule, that's the dead ball after a pitch. This one covers a fair ball being stuck in a fence:

Rule 5.05(a)(7)

(7) Any fair ball which, either before or after touching the ground, passes through or under a fence, or through or under a scoreboard, or through any opening in the fence or scoreboard, or through or under shrubbery, or vines on the fence, or which sticks in a fence or scoreboard, in which case the batter and the runners shall be entitled to two bases;

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 1 November 2025 18:24 (six days ago)

Barger had to be aggressive there. He’s the tying run. I think Kiké just made a sensational play.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 1 November 2025 18:41 (six days ago)

It was a ground rule double, not in the rule book per se. As I understand it, the Jays themselves wrote rule as it pertains to their park. Anything stuck in the padding, between the turf and the padding, or between pads, is a ground rule double. I think the rule is clear.

Barger had to be aggressive there. He’s the tying run. I think Kiké just made a sensational play.

kiké did make a good play (his post-game interview on this was interesting) however with 1 out and a runner in front of you *and* the ball being hit in front of you, you should not get caught out like that. i sympathize with his jumpiness given the situation but everything you’re taught about how to run the bases in that situation would tell you to be cautious and let the play develop in front of you

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 1 November 2025 19:22 (six days ago)

Before I disappear for a few hours... (Why? Because it worked against Seattle. I’m juggling a dozen different superstitions at the moment. I may message Thermo if I need to be talked down from the ledge tonight--that’s also a carry-over from G7 of the ALCS.)

Can’t remember my exact frame of mind in ‘92 and ‘93, but I do know that those two seasons finished off a decade (11 years, to be precise) of unbroken success: lots of disappointment, yes, but Toronto won between 86 and 95 games every season, won the division five times, and finished first or second eight times. The biggest free agents wanted to come here, the Yankees were just another baseball team, and we had the highest payroll and best organization in baseball. I wasn’t all that young (30 and 31) at the time, but young enough to never dream that it would take 32 years to get back to the WS. I assumed everything would be that way for a while, with one or two more WS with the next decade a certainty.

Been trying to figure out if it’s harder or easier to win a WS now than it was in ‘93. There are two competing probabilities: it’s easier to make the playoffs now--4/28 teams qualified in ‘93; this year it was 12/30--but harder to win once you’re there. The ‘93 Jays had to win eight postseason games; if the Dodgers win tonight, they’ll have won 13 (it would be the Jays’ 11th win tonight). Either way, and not to get melodramatic, but I don’t think they’ll be back in my lifetime. This year was a perfect storm; Vlad will be around for years, maybe Yesavage too, but I don’t see anything even close to the outline of a dynasty here. Our starting pitcher tonight is 41 years old. I said early on that getting in this year was everything, that I wasn’t too stressed about the result, and that was true when the series started. But the way things have unfolded--and especially after last night--winning seems important now.

is your position that the ball did not make any contact with padding?

, Saturday, 1 November 2025 23:31 (six days ago)

also i dont think the outfielders get to decide, the umps make the final call. the outfielders do so at their peril, if the ump says it’s a live ball obv the baserunners just keep on running. but if the outfielder touches it then it definitely becomes live. so you understand why they are trained to throw their hands up!

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 2 November 2025 00:29 (five days ago)

Ohtani struggling with his command and velo? Hmm, best to hand him some outs then...

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 2 November 2025 00:29 (five days ago)

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 2 November 2025 00:29 (five days ago)

i think vlad thought it was a ball but it wasnt and the hit and run was on, but it wasnt even that close to being a ball

thank u for your service lagoon but it’s the same as anywhere else - i’m on mac/duckduckpro and mac/safari laptop, clicking those links and getting so many waves of porn and ads and home cleaning products and vibrators and mostly just porn! it’s crazy! i’ve closed over 1000 windows tonight, easily. i had the game going for a few seconds and then a pop-up ad appeared over it with 4 X’s - i clicked X many dozens of times trying to get back to the underlying game, but it was one of those tricks

this is bonkers! it’s harder to watch anything for free (like you could…with a tv? technology going wrong direction thread connections) but this is just bonkers

Bee OK, Sunday, 2 November 2025 01:36 (five days ago)

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 2 November 2025 01:37 (five days ago)

Didn't think I'd see the benches clear during a game 7.

The bigger story is that the Jays missed another opportunity to ice the series.

Sam Weller, Sunday, 2 November 2025 10:41 (five days ago)

You can’t say the Jays beat themselves, because the Dodgers are so good. But you can say they didn’t help themselves plenty of times in game 7. Can’t strand guys in scoring position that many times in a close game.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 2 November 2025 12:38 (five days ago)

You couldn’t have scripted a more painful loss--worse than ‘85, ‘87, or ‘15. The thing that links the four together is that--and I know this invites ridicule--I strongly believe the Jays were the best team out there, even with the one glaring weakness that finally caught up to us in the 9th inning, after miraculously dodging it most of the way. We got beat by two players (one of them contained for most of the series), some freakish bad luck, and, most of all, by ourselves.

Don’t feel like revisiting much, except to say that Vlad did something I didn’t think possible: as a first baseman, he had a huge defensive impact time and time again. The first Series I ever watched was the Brooks Robinson 1970 Series, and probably half a dozen times during this one, Vlad was Brooks Robinson out there. I’ll try to remember that, remember Yesavage and the big home runs, and forget the rest.

clemenza, Sunday, 2 November 2025 13:07 (five days ago)

i was so sure that Varsho was going to have a big moment at the plate. the script was written for it, both in G6 and G7.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 2 November 2025 13:54 (five days ago)

The Jays were the better team if you forget baserunning. Bo not being able to score due to his injury + Kirk's lack of wheels. IKF with no lead in the 9th sliding into a force play. Springer thrown out for ? reason in the first. The pitching was more consistent, the bats were definitely more active, even the defense was better (Vladdy omg). But none net-negative baserunning and a sprinkle of all-time goated world series pitching by Yama and you end up here

H.P, Sunday, 2 November 2025 14:00 (five days ago)

the Dodgers were perfect defensively when they needed to be afaict. one little slipup anywhere in G7 and it would likely have swung the other way. G7 MVP is Rojas imo

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 2 November 2025 14:02 (five days ago)

-8 run differential; mostly chalked up to a dastardley pen which everyone and their dog was aware of going into this series. One crazy 18th inning game excluded, were the dodgers could lean on their starters they could make up for slumping bats. Jays were definitely the more well rounded team. But in a world series you get a bit more wiggle room to play to your strengths and filter out your weaknesses (what if we just string together 4 starters for game 7 and forget we have a bullpen???)

H.P, Sunday, 2 November 2025 14:03 (five days ago)

Xp you're forgetting about teoscar hernandez

H.P, Sunday, 2 November 2025 14:04 (five days ago)

But yeah dodgers defense was not bad and obviously there were some clutch plays. Just most of those plays (pick offs, caught at the plate, caught out running back to 2nd) i attribute more to jays baserunning than dodgers defence. Maybe unfairly. Jays, particularly Vladdy and Varsho had some spectacular plays throughout the seried though which didn't have anything to do with sloppy dodgers baserunning

H.P, Sunday, 2 November 2025 14:06 (five days ago)

i feel like IKF's no-lead at third was a direct result of barger getting doubled up to end game 6. kinda crazy

, Sunday, 2 November 2025 14:46 (five days ago)

The lack of a lead by IKF was not a great thing to see when I woke up today. I guess with the 3b being so close to the bag, he didn’t want to risk get doubled up? Still scratching my head about the springer throw out with Vlad at the plate. Lousy base running killer them in 2024, and they had completely turned that around this year only to relapse in the World Series.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 2 November 2025 14:48 (five days ago)

There were probably weird 20 plays in this series that I've never seen the likes of before and might never again. Just off the top of my head: the Springer and Bichette CS/pickoffs, Barger's hit getting stuck in the fence, Smith just *barely* lifting his foot off home plate and re-touching the plate to beat IKF with the series-winning run by about one inch, the double plays to end Game 6 AND Game 7 ... we also saw improbable individual performances: a pinch-hit grand slam, a game tying HR in G7 by a guy who hadn't had a hit in a month, Yamamoto's dominance, Shohei reaching base nine times in a game, Clement becoming a hit machine, Yesavage setting records, Klein getting the win in the 18-inning game. It was a well-played series *and* one of the greatest series ever. Those aren't always the same -- the 2001 and 2011 WS were exciting, but in no small part due to a managerial comedy of errors. And in the case of the 2011 WS, with all due respect, neither team was really all that great.

So in time, I hope I'll appreciate that the Jays participated in this nearly indescribable run of great baseball culminating in a WS that couldn't possibly have been any closer. Maybe they'll be like the 2014 Royals and come back next year on a revenge tour that'll take them back to the WS. But considering how hard it is to make the playoffs now and to advance compared to even ten years ago, I wouldn't bet on it.

frogbs, Monday, 3 November 2025 03:26 (four days ago)

You couldn’t have scripted a more painful loss--worse than ‘85, ‘87, or ‘15.

More positive thoughts from me ... I disagree with you here. Losing this year was horrible, but I am more proud of this team and the way they played than even the WS winning teams in '92 and '93. Maybe that's recency bias, but whatever. 2015 was bad but they delivered all-time great game and moment vs Texas, and nearly forced G7 in the ALCS, again, plenty to be proud of. In 1985 they were as good as anybody and had everything going their way vs KC until George Brett went into beast mode and they had basically ran out of steam by G7.

The 1987 Jays were probably the best Jays team ever but pulled off an all-team horrible final week collapse and didn't even make the playoffs. No joy and no redeeming qualities whatsoever. So 1987 is the "winner", now, and forever more.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 3 November 2025 09:19 (four days ago)

People sharing that great Giamatti quote but the whole essay concludes like this. Very much what I imagine being a Jays fan feels like right now.

Rice the Hammer of God sent to scourge the Yankees, the sound was overwhelming, fathers pounded their sons on the back, cars pulled off the road, households froze, New England exulted in its blessedness, and roared its thanks for all good things, for Rice and for a summer stretching halfway through October. Briles threw, Rice swung, and it was over. One pitch, a fly to center, and it stopped. Summer died in New England and like rain sliding off a roof, the crowd slipped out of Fenway, quickly, with only a steady murmur of concern for the drive ahead remaining of the roar. Mutability had turned the seasons and translated hope to memory once again. And, once again, she had used baseball, our best invention to stay change, to bring change on.

That is why it breaks my heart, that game--not because in New York they could win because Boston lost; in that, there is a rough justice, and a reminder to the Yankees of how slight and fragile are the circumstances that exalt one group of human beings over another. It breaks my heart because it was meant to, because it was meant to foster in me again the illusion that there was something abiding, some pattern and some impulse that could come together to make a reality that would resist the corrosion; and because, after it had fostered again that most hungered-for illusion, the game was meant to stop, and betray precisely what it promised.

Of course, there are those who learn after the first few times. They grow out of sports. And there are others who were born with the wisdom to know that nothing lasts. These are the truly tough among us, the ones who can live without illusion, or without even the hope of illusion. I am not that grown-up or up-to-date. I am a simpler creature, tied to more primitive patterns and cycles. I need to think something lasts forever, and it might as well be that state of being that is a game; it might as well be that, in a green field, in the sun.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 November 2025 09:34 (four days ago)

An exercise in masochism, I know, but I do disagree, NoTime. I sincerely hope my head is where yours is in a few days, but right now, not even close.

I'll flip my argument for Bautista/Springer over Carter on their head here; for me, it's all about proximity to winning everything, how agonizingly close we were. Those other teams still had a ways to go--one of them didn't even make the playoffs, the other two fell short of the WS. They hurt, and I think every one of them was better than the WS winner that year, but there was a ways to go each time.

We were two outs away this year--ideally, two pitches, even. Offensively, we were a freakish catch away from walking it off. We were a normal lead-off away from walking it off. (Admittedly, I wasn't aware of that till the next day.) We were a routine fly ball away from walking it off. There was, as you point out, more than enough good memories to counteract all that, and almost certainly the most lovable Jays team ever. Right now, the crushing disappointment overwhelms that for me.

No one will agree, but I'd even say that, as objectively as possible (i.e., for anyone without a rooting interest), this was worse than the '85 Cardinals, '86 Mets, or 2011 Rangers. Denkinger, Buckner, and Freese aside, those teams all had a chance to come back for a G7. None of them won, so the G6 traumas are what everyone remembers. But sometimes teams do come back, like the '75 Reds. It wasn't a G6 we lost--it was G7.

(For what it's worth, I think you mischaracterize 1985. Brett's epic game was G3, after which the Jays went up 3-1 and Brett was 1-11 the rest of the way, 0-5 in G7.)

clemenza, Monday, 3 November 2025 14:20 (four days ago)

(That should read '86 Red Sox, obviously.)

clemenza, Monday, 3 November 2025 14:32 (four days ago)

yeah I definitely think this was worse than the 2011 Rangers for multiple reasons - that it happened in front of the home crowd (who'd already been subjected to a brutal Game 6!) and the fact that they were pretty big underdogs going against a team with like 3x the payroll of the average MLB team...you can only imagine how sweet it would've been. might actually be the most brutal championship loss I've seen in any sport.

frogbs, Monday, 3 November 2025 14:32 (four days ago)

The other thing I meant to add that mitigates '85 and '87 for me was, as I posted earlier, the certainty we'd be back. With the Killer B's in the outfield and Tony Fernandez, we had the best core of young talent in the game, plus Henke was now in place as one of the best closers in baseball. I can't remember what the long-term feeling was about the 2015 Jays (felt like a go-for-broke year? we did have Bautista/Edwin/Donaldson coming back). This year, I don't see much of anything. Many people will be leaving, Bo most of all, the Yankees and Red Sox will spend zillions and go back to doing what they do, and the Rays will do what they do and right the ship. I don't think we'll be back for many years.

clemenza, Monday, 3 November 2025 15:41 (four days ago)

clemenza, Monday, 3 November 2025 15:50 (four days ago)

I don’t think it’s necessarily a slam dunk that Bo will leave, just like I didn’t see Vlad leaving cos he is so much more valuable to the Jays than any other team. Rogers didn’t refurb that stadium at vast expense just to have a team nobody cares about, yk?

colonic interrogation (gyac), Monday, 3 November 2025 15:53 (four days ago)

Also, the Bill Buckner blaming has always been obscene given there was a game 7… same with that guy who caught the ball in Chicago!

colonic interrogation (gyac), Monday, 3 November 2025 15:54 (four days ago)

I'd be overjoyed if Bo stays--and maybe the postseason might be a factor (although, as we full well know, with 90% of players it's factor till another team offers them one dollar more)--but I'd be very surprised. They were wondering on the radio this morning if moving him to second might be an incentive for him...but maybe that'd be a disincentive, I don't know. Anyway, here's hoping. If he stays, I'd obviously feel more optimistic about the future.

clemenza, Monday, 3 November 2025 16:58 (four days ago)

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 3 November 2025 18:13 (four days ago)

Rogers certainly have the money, probably made a fortune in the postseason too you’d think?

Keith Law ranked Bo second on his list of free agents and said:

Before this postseason, Bichette had never played an inning in the majors anywhere other than shortstop, but it’s time for him to make that move to second base permanently. He hasn’t had a positive Runs Above Average measurement for his defense except for the shortened 2020 season, and was at minus-10 this past year, which means his defense cost the Jays a full win of value. His bat will still make him a star at the keystone, and he might be an above-average defender there.

Bichette’s unusual swing and fringy bat speed haven’t stopped him from posting above-average contact rates, including a career-best 14.5 percent strikeout rate in 2025, and hard-hit rates always above the median with a peak of 50.3 percent in 2022. Put him at second base and even if he’s an average defender he’ll be a 4.5-5 win player for many years. He should get more than Willy Adames did last winter.

Rogers always has the money, and yes, they made a fortune; it's just a case of how much they're willing to part with, and if they're willing to carry two mega-contracts. Not "can they"--they can--but will they? Hopefully the truism hit home once again how truly baseball-crazy the city/country is when things go well.

clemenza, Monday, 3 November 2025 18:26 (four days ago)

And I hope that Bo hasn't already mentally left--there was a time during the season when I think that was true--and if he had, enough money can get him to mentally find his way home.

main concern is if he wants vlad money to be a good-but-inconsistent bat and not-so-great fielder

Bo is only 27 and has been a franchise guy forever. If they were in the running for Soto, and if they were trying to get Ohtani, then both Bo and Vlad shouldn’t be a problem. If anything the Jays showing they can compete and sign franchise players to long term contracts suggests that Rogers should spend more, not less.

(xpost) And if he'd be willing to play second, where I actually think he could do well (was very good in the Series).

Trying to pretend I'm busy while trying to keep this highly annoying grade 7/8 class quiet...Idle weirdness: Ernie Clement had a negative WPA on BRef for the Series and for the postseason. I know that's all tied in with leverage, but still a head-scratcher.

xpost to gyac - Rogers doesn't always operate on the same logic one would expect. there's a reason they are one of the most loathed companies in canada

Yes--and I think they usually have a hard ceiling when it comes to negotiations (they seemed to get backed into such a corner with Vlad that they loosened that some). I hope to be proven wrong, but I think Shapiro and Atkins are born tinkerers, who are happy to work around the edges.

clemenza, Monday, 3 November 2025 21:31 (four days ago)

I.e., they're happy to work within the parameters set by Rogers.

clem -- continuing where we left off ...

First off, you're right about Brett in '85, his numbers for the series were great, and he won G3 almost by himself, but the Jays still came back to take G4. Brett still won ALCS MVP though.

Can't argue with any of that. The 2011 Rangers were one strike away from winning, twice. But they still could have won in G7. The 2025 Jays had more even chances, but couldn't execute.

In today's game there's a bigger emphasis on playoff performance than in year's past. For the '85 Jays, winning the division was a huge deal. Today, even with the new seedings, division titles don't really matter. It's not what people remember. It's more important to deliver in the playoffs, and to create great playoff moments.

For instance, what do people remember about the 2010's Dodgers teams? They won the division every year from 2013-2019. But I'd argue that people remember them more for choking in the playoffs every year against inferior teams. Look at this thread -- we're still making Clayton Kershaw crash 'n' burn jokes.

OTOH, take the 2016 WS, which also went seven games (and extra innings in G7) and featured two teams with strong historical narratives behind them. One could argue that Cleveland blew the Series, but I think it's remembered as an epic matchup between two deserving teams that culminated in an all-time great G7.

I'm not saying that putting on a "good playoff performance" is more important than winning. Winning is obviously more important. But teams can cement themselves, historically, without winning the WS. With so many more playoff series than ever before, that's just simple math -- there are more important games being played every year than ever before.

The 2015 Jays were great, and if they had won the WS then we'd think better of them. But we don't think less of them because they didn't win, they're defined by the accomplishments that they did manage to achieve. What do people remember about the '87 Jays? Everyone remembers the seven game losing streak to close the season. Nobody says "hey, they won 96 games, that's still a pretty good season". The 2025 Jays are firmly in the former category.

i still don't shut up about that '87 outfield. i have a Barfield jersey!

We'll have to call an impasse, NoTime; sincerely hope I'm where you are in two weeks, but for me, it's still misery and leadoffs-not-taken and Trevor Fucking Hoffman, grandson of Bucky Fucking Dent. (Speaking of whom, there's almost a direct line from the ball Lou Pinella couldn't see in the '78 playoff game--which he somehow caught or knocked down anyway, can't remember which--and the one Kike Hernandez couldn't see and managed to turn into a DP anyway.)

Also, re Toronto's future: whether or not they sign Bo, they absolutely have to hand the closer job to someone else. (If they hadn't tried to get by on the cheap at the deadline this year--ah, we'll just stick with our guy and hope for the best--I do believe they would have won.)

clemenza, Monday, 3 November 2025 23:51 (four days ago)

well, robert suarez opted out. good luck!

, Tuesday, 4 November 2025 14:21 (three days ago)

When I look at Suarez vs. Hoffman, my first reaction is "How much of an upgrade would that be?" Suarez saved 40/45, an 89% save pct.; Hoffman converted 33/40 for 83%...if he'd had the same 45 opportunities, that would have been 37 saves. Three games is a lot, admittedly (although blowing a save doesn't automatically mean the game was lost).

Yet there's a huge difference in their ERAs: 2.97 for Suarez, 4.37 for Hoffman. Maybe that means Hoffman turns a lot of three-run leads into one-run wins, or maybe it means something else. One thing I've been wondering about lately is variance in blown saves: maybe when Suarez blows a save, that usually means giving up the tying run and no more (meaning his team still had a pretty good chance to win), whereas when Hoffman blows a save, he really blows a save--multiple runs and little chance to come back.

Here's what happened in their blown saves (which includes BS that turned into a win or a loss for the pitcher--BRef designates them as "BL" or "BW"--and using only earned runs):

Suarez: 0.1 IP/5 ER, 1.0/0, 0.1/2, 1.0/1, 1.0/1; overall, 3.2 IP/9 ER = 22.09 ERA

Hoffman: 0.1 IP/3 ER, 0.1/5, 1.0/2, 0.1/1, 0.2/0, 1.0/1, 0.2/4: overall, 4.1 IP/16 ER = 32.23 ERA

So there is some truth in that: a Hoffman blown save is usually worse than a Suarez blown save. Three of Suarez’s five BS weren’t that bad; you could only say the same of two of Hoffman’s seven BS.

by at least wRC, Vlad had the best postseason of all-time. doesn't account for park or position though

I'm in Toronto today, so caught some of the FAN. I was shaking my head as they went through all the reasons they believe Bo will stay. Didn't disagree with any of them--of course it makes sense for him to stay, and of course it makes sense for the Jays to keep him here. But it's like they'd never gone through this before: logic, loyalty, friendships, park factors, position, it all goes out the window (or at least it does with the great majority of players). If the Blue Jays offer him more money than anyone else is willing to, he'll stay. If they don't, he won't.

Maybe we should take this discussion to the Hot Stove thread ... IMO, Bo is as good as gone. He's a valuable player but I think he wants Devers/Bogaerts money and starting pitching is a more pressing need. If Santander and Giminez bounce back, and we get a full season from Barger (including some expected improvement), Bo's offense can be replaced rather easily within the current roster. There aren't any premium starting pitchers on the market, which means someone is going to overpay for a Dylan Cease or Ranger Suarez, and that someone probably should be us.

Done. This is more WS relevant...I was in Missassauga today for a cousin-in-law's memorial service (the only kind of thing that gets me inside a church). The priest led with a joke--"My two religions are Tim Hortons and god"--then mentioned being a Leafs fan. "And Blue Jays...(makes a hand gesture of sorts) I'm grieving." As I went to say goodbye to the cousin-in-law's son, he was up talking to the priest, and yes, they were talking about the WS.
