Webb has been unable to throw his sinker with accuracy and he's been getting smashed on it, though this could be injury related. However, the dude was leading the majors in balls called strikes, and with ABS his advantage there (coupled with league leading frame jobs from Bailey) is gone as well. He might be cooked.

Honestly - this team needs to sell, tank, and start drafting and farming. If they're going to suck, just suck properly instead of this .500 ball nonsense and go for it. Bring up some new talent and build some organic chemistry.

early returns on having someone in the catcher slot that can get a hit sometimes seems to be good.

buster does not seem long for that job for obvious reasons however i do support the bailey trade. i just think regardless of how good you are on defense, even if you're unanimously the best at your position, being like a .600 OPS hitter just isn't tenable. now, if the guards figure out how to get him to hit, then buster has a big problem (to add to his other big problems) but i support this trade. i just don't think you should employ a hitter that bad

Posey is a member of the ownership group it’s not quite the usual hired bozo situation.

Posey's also the guy who "signed" Chapman (supposedly involved in negotiations before he was hired), Adames, and traded for Devers. Adames hit 30 home runs last year! Devers also had a decent year last year and played well as a Giant.

It's way too early to quit on these dudes, they're capable and not exactly in multi-year slumps/declines, it's May.

The Vitello hire, Webb losing his mojo (possibly in part due to ABS) and the team not upgrading their bullpen and rotation along with the continued lack of a single star to emerge from the minors is the real concern in my book.

All these articles are 1000% OTM. Especially the last one, Doug's substack, and how it ended. I have actually started looking at my own Giants gear with an eye to box it up due to this shit; certainly not going to wear it any time soon. For any Knicks fans reading this, imagine they win two more titles as underdogs, with players literally representing the vibe of your city. Then 10 years later JB becomes the GM/President and oversees the Knicks return to being the worst team in the league and a number of players decide to pull similar shit on a pride night in MSG or do something else to insult a minority community of NYC. That's what is happening here. 2010 for us was like what the Knicks did for NY just now. And that team felt like it represented us with all its kink (remember The Machine?), weirdness, eccentricity, charm and tenacity, just like this Knicks team represents the grit, intensity and heart of NYC.

Maybe it's why I've been loving this win for the Knicks - it's amazing to not only see your team win but also be a representation of your community win. Most sports teams are not like that, players come and go, many from other countries, let alone cities. But that's what 2010 felt like for us and no doubt what Knicks fans are feeling.

Wow. gyac won't like this, but you just can't do that--pinch-running in the late innings is a fact of life, and looking at Devers' career box (didn't know anything about his speed), he's not exactly Rickey Henderson. Even if he were, that wouldn't look good.

I mean, I guess you could draw a parallel with Scherzer chasing away Schneider last year, but I'd say that 1) pitchers are different, and 2) that whole episode was orchestrated anyway--Schneider got exactly the response he wanted.

It's a horrible look but tracks with Rafael Devers. He threw a temper tantrum over the logical move.

I was open minded before, willing to give Vitello rope of at least a full season and then some. Now I think it's extremely clear he needs to be gone by the end of this year, if not sooner. He really should have declined the offer last fall. No doubt he's probably thinking that every night lately (though I'm sure he's appreciating whatever guaranteed money is coming his way)

Caught the tail end of Jeff Blair interviewing Jayson Stark about the Devers episode. Stark clearly is no fan of Vitello--told a story about some completely irrelevant answer Vitello gave him to a straightforward question. But he was dead-set against what Devers did: "You can do a lot of things, but you can't do that" (sounding very Meatloaf-ish there). He also dismissed any comparison to Scherzer last year.

I know it was a completely different player-manager dynamic in 1977, but I might compare it to Martin pulling Reggie mid-game on national TV. Conceding the different context, 1) in that case, Martin's move was purely a matter of impetuous anger--it was clearly unfair, and 2) Reggie was almost bigger than the sport itself at that point. And while he was obviously baffled when Paul Blair ran out to replace him, he didn't resist on the field. In the dugout, for sure--he and Martin almost fought--but not on the field; you can't do that.

Yeah it sucks for sure. Andrew Baggarly picked a terrible time to go on holiday. I would be shocked if Buster hasn’t read Devers the riot act but my sympathy for Vitello only goes so far seeing as he allowed several of his players to pull that stunt for Pride Night. Or did he? Maybe he has no control over any part of the team.

He also could have read the rules out to each pitcher looking to protest and say "you're not hitting the field unless you take that off and just wear a regular hat" which is in the CBA. Hentges did this at least. But he could have taken it one step further and said you're staying in the dugout if you go through with it.

Stronger leadership would have also furthered real discussion on the issue behind closed doors. Maybe get Krukow involved to offer real examples of how their decision would cause harm. All of this rests on Vitello at a minimum

I was even thinking - there's a real world example with a past Giants player (and relief pitcher) Jeremy Affeldt. He's an outspoken Christian who originally was very uncomfortable coming to SF and probably felt very similarly to the protesting pitchers upon arrival. However, he listened and grew from his experiences here, and was able to embrace community love and what Pride night is actually for and now openly supports it and the queer community. This is another in-house opportunity, bring in Affeldt and have him talk to the clubhouse.

At this point I'm not even sure. The ownership probably see more value in the real estate they now own that's quite close to the AI big boys over in China Basin and Dogpatch. Looking at their recent actions: dumping Renel, switching to Aramark, hiring Vitello, putting Chick-fil-A ads on the left field foul pole, rising prices, there's clear signs of enshittification and not really caring about the fans, like at all. Then you have Kushner money coming in - It's as if they are putting a baseball team on the field to "go through the motions". There's guaranteed revenue through sharing and TV contracts. Posey represents a "face", a connection to the glory years, maybe he's a convenient figurehead.

It might have been the case last Saturday when Vitello sent Bericoto to pinch hit while representing the tying run with two outs in the ninth inning. It was the rookie’s first at-bat in 10 days and he flied out to right field. On the long flight back to San Francisco Sunday night, after Devers took a seat next to Vitello to apologize for initially refusing to be removed for a pinch runner, the conversation shifted to several aspects of the team. The Bericoto pinch at-bat was among them. Devers told Vitello that it was a difficult assignment for a young player.

Vitello agreed with Devers but also said, “The only way you get at-bats is if you get at-bats. So I’m hopeful that Miami at-bat, even though it didn’t work out the way he wanted, helped him today.”

Buster no-showed the KNBR spot and sent Larry Baer instead for some additional hot air about concerning stances/achieving their potential instead of why nobody in the front office wants to own up to why this team is so bad.

Recently inducted Hall of Famer Jeff Kent said what he always appreciated most about Krukow is his ability to provide the players' side sensitively.

"His loyalty to being a player and how he was able to translate that to the fans is special," the former Giants second baseman said. "He and Kuiper do a great job of almost being one of us - that's why the players like him so much. He's delivering something is real - that's the biggest talent that he has. he makes it real, gives you the players' perspective, how they're feeling, a player's visual on what happened. He was loyal to us and I think the players gave that back to him. That's why we all like him so much."

That’s not to put ol’ Pops down — he was a very hands-on father who spent a lot of time with me. It’s just a mathematical reality. My father didn’t talk at me for three hours a day, 150 days out of the year, over the past several decades. And if he had tried to, I would have hit him with a mallet.

There’s no easy way to describe the symbiotic relationship between a fan and a favorite announcer, then, because you can’t reasonably grapple with just how much time you’ve spent with this person in your life, in your home, in your danged head. It’s a lot. It’s so much more than you might have ever contemplated until this moment. This isn’t just a retirement of a single person in an entertainment-related business, but a foundational shift in how you interact with the world...

Krukow’s broadcasting career will always remain a gift, though, and it’s the kind that doesn’t have to show up for every organization or fan base just because it’s their turn. The Giants got lucky. So did their fans. So did Krukow himself. Everybody knew it the entire time it was happening, and nobody will forget about it when it’s over.

Kruk can make even a shitty game semi-enjoyable. He has so much knowledge. He could definitely have been a pitching coach. <3
