i tried to fix that table, but i think that tables aren't really telling the story about johan, he's just mowing down team after team with reckless abandon. if he doesn't win the Cy i will stage an international protest. As I pointed out on the MVP thread, he could win the MVP at this point.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 19 September 2004 22:01 (twenty years ago)

His stats this season are almost in line with Big Unit's, right down the line, but poor Randy just doesn't have those gosh darn intangibles that you need to get the wins!

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 19 September 2004 22:31 (twenty years ago)

Yesterday, I was thinking about all the "Shannon Stewart for MVP" blowhards from last year. Santana's performance really makes them all look like even bigger morons than they were twelve months ago. Like last year, it's Minnesota's pitching that has excelled in the second half, causing their division to go from a close race to a runaway.

Stewart, despite being injured for part of the year, is putting up more or less the same numbers that he did last year, which were more or less the same numbers he put up every year with the Blue Jays (AND the same numbers he put up during the first half of last season with the Jays). He's played more games for the Twins this year than last, and he obviously wasn't getting any MVP consideration for contributions with the Blue Jays in the first part of the year.

So, according to the people who voted for him last year, Shannon Stewart should be the MVP again, right?

Oh wait, I guess he didn't "ignite the offense" this year like he did last year. He must have forgotten to brush up on that skill during the offseason.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 19 September 2004 22:51 (twenty years ago)

I just noticed that he hasn't given up a run in his last four starts, or 29 consecutive scoreless innings (plus more from the start before that?).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 20 September 2004 01:02 (twenty years ago)

30 scoreless innings + 12 straight wins

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 01:03 (twenty years ago)

... and wins in 11 straight starts. What's the record for winning consecutive starts? I think it's 15 or 16? Halladay won 11 straight starts last year too -- and won the Cy.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 20 September 2004 01:08 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i haven't read gleeman's blog in awhile (like before the season)(just haven't had the time) but i figured 'god he must just be wetting himself over santana this year' and 'god he's gonna have a stroke if schilling wins the cy young'.

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Saturday, 25 September 2004 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Due to the rain-forced twinbill today, Santana-Mussina is supposed to be the 4pm game, no ESPN as far as I know...

One of my fave BP writers, Derek Zumsteg, gives his (nonexistent) MVP vote to Santana. Vlad looks like he's nailing it down this week, even if (big if) the A's prevail.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 13:52 (twenty years ago)

He just stepped onto the mound at Yankee stadium right now... I suggest you tune in if you like baseball.

i meant "tune in" as in: MLB.com, sporto.

more pressing: why is Santana out after 5?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:51 (twenty years ago)

what do the twins gain by kepping him in?

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:53 (twenty years ago)

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Mental domination: this is the ALCS in my opinion.

except it's not, and therein lies the answer.

i'm boycotting mlb.com gameday until maura implements those features i told her to.

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:05 (twenty years ago)

I'd rather see Mow-han do his mowing of the Evil Empire in the playoffs. The less AB's the Yanks get before that, the better.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:17 (twenty years ago)

See you dorks. Now the Twinkies bullpen is scarred by this... If Santana would have pitched 100 pitches (instead of 70) and handed off the baton to Nathan, the Twinkies would have a psychological advantage over the Yankees come the playoffs.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:37 (twenty years ago)

ALSO: There goes his Cy. 3 days ago, Schilling pitched 7 innings and gave up 2 against the very same team.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:42 (twenty years ago)

first sporto, now dork...i'm putting my foot down and drawing a big fucking line in the dirt, buddy. cross it if you dare.

re the cy race w/ schill, the only thing santana could possibly do, as far as i can tell, is pitch a couple complete games (to make up the diff b/w the two). obv that's not going to happen, but he must have it 99% in the bag, right?

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:53 (twenty years ago)

bearing typical voter logic:

#1: if Santana would have got the win, it would have pulled his record to even with Schilling (21-6).

#2: Santana finishing the last week of the season by beating the Yankees would have been too much for the NY Media to ignore. the schilling victory is more resonating as is.

#3: w/r/t: complete games.... Santana has 242 innings pitched to Schillings 227.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:02 (twenty years ago)

yeah i thought schilling was a win or two ahead but a second ago when i looked at their repsective stat pages i could've sworn they showed identical records...i suppose you might have a point about a media boost from beating NYY (in what is probably a meaningless game) but come on, he's made it all the way up the 20 win mountain (easily the most important voter-stat, surely) and is besting schilling in virtually every pitching statistic in existence...i refuse to believe the voters are as ignant as many like to think.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:53 (twenty years ago)

I assume you're joking, Gear. Welch had one of the flukiest seasons ever and 27 wins is eye-popping (so was Eck's 0.70 ERA that season, or whatever it was, which obviously helped Welch a ton).
There's no way the voters would value Schilling's one extra win over Santana's dominance in almost every other category. Particularly when he's the ace of a division-winning team.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:06 (twenty years ago)

that's also a big factor (much less so in Cy than MVP but still) - santana's indisputably the best player on his team; the same cannot be said of schilling.

Serves those asshats right. I wonder if similar stuff can be said about someone like Justin Morneau (who probably spent at least 1.5 years more in the minors than he needed). Or, like, most of the Twins prospects from the past 2-3 years.

Wife of Twins Pitcher Santana Has Baby

MINNEAPOLIS - The wife of Minnesota Twins pitcher Johan Santana gave birth to the couple's second child just 45 minutes before her husband stepped on the mound Wednesday night against the Kansas City Royals.

Yasmile Santana gave birth to an 8-pound, 6-ounce girl, Jasmine Alejandra, at 6:18 p.m. at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina. She is the couple's second child.

Johan Santana, the 2004 AL Cy Young Award winner, was not present for the birth.

Gina Rivas, the wife of Twins second baseman Luis Rivas, called the Twins clubhouse from the hospital and gave the news to Santana just before he headed to the field for his pregame warmup. Yasmile was scheduled to be induced Thursday morning.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 21 April 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

He gave up 4 straight hits today:

2 bloop singles
then a shot up the middle which scored the runner from 2nd leaving runners at first and third
then a homerun to Sweeney

other than that he looked pretty much untouchable (only 1 other bloop hit, no walks, 10 Ks in 7 innings).

He lost today! -- beaten by Bartolo Colon and the Angels.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 1 May 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

He won yesterday -- 1 ER in a complete game. And zero walks. His total number of walks for the year: 5. ONE PER TEN INNINGS. That is fucking mind-boggling.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Saturday, 7 May 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

have you seen what teammate Brad Radke is doing? 50 IP, ONE WALK

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Saturday, 7 May 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

WTF, that is BANANAS. Silva only has one in 29 innings, too (though the 39 hits kind of cancels that out). Even suckass Kyle Lohse has only given up 3 in 21 innings.

Dig this: Radke, Silva and Lohse have given up more home runs than walks. Santana's at a 1:1 ratio. That is scary.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Saturday, 7 May 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Came home from work to check out the box of this afternoon's start and got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach when I saw the Brewers scored 5. I figured that last start was the beginning of some downard slide into the Fidrych Abyss.

Turns out he gave up only 2 runs in 7 innings and struck out 11 in a no-decision. With one walk. His ERA's an ugly 3.82, but still... whew, I guess. (And Shannon Stewart = MR. CLUTCH!!1 Hot damn.)

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Monday, 23 May 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

As of yesterday:

Johan Santana - Slugging % allowed:

2002 .311
2003 .367
2004 .315
2005 .426

Today he gives up 4 hits (2 HRs) across 8 innings (14 Ks + 1 BB). He's still dominant but that susceptibility to HRs seems more of an issue this year.

Well, it was a good run, wasn't it? It doesn't look like he'll ever be the same force he was last year.

It's odd how his biggest cheerleader has been pretty quiet about his fall from grace. Maybe tomorrow we'll see something different.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

"It doesn't look like he'll ever be the same force he was last year."

Woah ever is a pretty extreme comment.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

Last year he finished 14-0, 1.50 or whatever during the last four months, so yeah, it's not so audacious to think that he won't do that again.

The "fall from grace" talk is premature. We're talking Kenny Rogers on the red carpet levels of premature.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder if he's going through what Halladay went through last year? Whatever that was! Overworked a little, maybe? He's still young, this isn't anything. If there's any pitcher in the majors I have confidence in as far as getting back on track and fast, it's Johan. This isn't Kerry Wood here (as much as it pains me to say that as a Cubs fan).

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

Halladay definitely seems to have sorted his "problems" out.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

Admittedly a lot of those problems were injury related, no?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

very true

I'm looking at Santana's stats and it seems like while he's not having a monster season in many ways, he's still got a K to BB ratio of 140-23 and a WHIP of 1.01 (both prior to today's game). His ERA is now a shade under 4 and his BAA is up a fair amount from last season, but not enough for me to think this is a meltdown or anything close to a bad season. He's having a good season, not a great one. I haven't checked his stats that closely, and I'm sure someone else could reference some more comprehensive stats to prove this, but I've gotta believe a lot of it is bad luck. Not sure about the HR thing, since he's probably on pace to give up 30, while last year he gave up 24.

I think Santana's average season from here on out will settle at about the halfway mark between last year and this, ERA-wise. Or he could still be the next Randy Johnson, who knows?

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

After today his ERA is 3.80. Last year at this date it was 3.89.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:19 (nineteen years ago)

Well the stat which gygax! cited above was slugging which is definitely going through the roof this year. But that doesn't really = HE WILL NEVER PITCH NEAR LAST YEARS LEVEL AGAIN, ahem.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:19 (nineteen years ago)

ah ha! I sense a streak of 20 consecutive shutouts coming soon.

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

Halladay was injured last year, and it wasn't related to overwork from prior seasons (he's one of the most efficient pitchers in MLB, with Madduxian P/IP ratios). That's why I was fairly confident that he'd bounce back this year, as opposed to Prior and Wood with all their arm surgeries.

Like Gear said, there's nothing in Santana's record that would lead to to believe that he's hurt/overworked/has a sore arm/etc. At the start of '04, Halladay's K/BB and BB numbers were all out of whack so it was obvious that something was wrong.

Also, we've noted on other threads that Santana has had a lot of dominant starts this year, but his more bad starts (more frequent than last year) are disguising that.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

b-b-but my fantasy team!!! guys? GUYS??!??!?!?!?! JOHAN!?!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

Santana (7-5), who hasn't won since June 8, lost his third straight decision.

the game recap mentions that molina's bases loaded single was off an 0-2 pitch so maybe he's trying to hard for 3-pitch strikeouts and not finessing enough? Also do you think the musical-catcher game the Twinkies play messes with the starters?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

I remain pessimistic. The Twins can't have anything nice, ever. Not a decent stadium, not a Cy Young-caliber pitcher maintaining a consistent run (see also: Frank Viola; Scott Erickson), not a power hitter (though maybe if we dump Morneau on the Red Sox he'll hit 40 HRs, too). Maybe I should move to Chicago; they have two popular teams to glom off.

You neglected to mention that Garcia had a no-hitter through seven, only to lose it (and the lead) due to Jones' homer in the eighth.

Santana stands to win his 13th game, and if his next six starts are anything like his last six, then are we looking at YOUR AL Cy Young winner for the second straight year?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 01:15 (nineteen years ago)

Why is this conversation occuring on the Santana thread as opposed to the White Sox thread? Freddy only gave up one hit. And he had to throw more pitches because his piece of shit rook gave up yet another error. Oh well, still one of the top-five greatest baseball games I have EVER witnessed. And yeah, that is not drink talking or anything like that, I just sat there watching the thing unfold, slack-jawed. What an amazing game. Shannon's catch, Dye's catch, Ozuna's error ... tons of drama ... just totally, totally unbelievable. Hey, hats off to off Santana. He was absolutley unbelievable, as always. but fuck a Jacque Jones.

Seriously, my favorite games that i actually watched all the way through as I sit here right now:

2. jack morris twinkie beats braves.

3. josh beckett beats Cubs on two days rest. fucking amazing performance.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

Re Santana and the Cy, Joe Sheehan thinks so:

Four of the five best pitchers in the league on a per-inning basis [Halladay, Harden, Bedard, Rogers] aren't likely to approach the kind of counting stats that win awards.

Santana is the one active pitcher in the top five in both categories, and as such, is probably the favorite for the award. He's third in the AL in ERA, leads the league in strikeouts and the only pitchers ahead of him in wins (Jon Garland, Bartolo Colon and Jeremy Bonderman) are pretty clearly inferior by most other measures, sabermetric and traditional. Santana, for what it's worth, is pitching nearly as well in 2005's second half as he was in 2004's, when he buried the league and ran away with the award.

Is there anyone we're missing? Well, Garland and Colon share the league lead in wins with 16. Garland's success, like that of Rogers, comes with a strikeout rate so low that it is unlikely that even the BBWAA would vote him an award. His best chance is to be the only pitcher in the league wth 20 wins; it could very well happen. Colon, 16-6 to Garland's 16-7, is a darkhorse candidate who could steal the award if he gets to 20 wins, especially if the Angels finish strong and draw attention to him. Kevin Millwood is fourth in the league in ERA, but at 7-10, has no chance of garnering support.

Unless Santana wins, though, the AL Cy Young Award for 2005 is likely to go to a compromise candidate in a fractured vote. There just aren't enough pitchers in the league who have combined durability and performance this year, certainly nothing along the lines of what the top contenders in the NL have done.

My best guess, however, is that Johan Santana will win the award over the next six weeks. He's the best pitcher in the league, will face a fairly weak slate of offenses down the stretch, and even with an ERA above 3.00, has superior peripherals.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 25 August 2005 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

I think Colon is uh not a "darkhorse" candidate, but it all really depends on this last month.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 25 August 2005 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

I think he just means 'not the current frontrunner.'

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

He's listed in a VORP chart in the article, but I'd say the BBWAA will have no time for a starter who's second on his team in wins.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

I mean yesterday!

c(''c) (Leee), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

And he still didn't get the W!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

4-hit 92-pitch shutout, didn't strike out a Met til the 9th. I'm glad my tix are for tonight.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

some recent oddness with the strikeouts, lately, between Johan's one-k shut-out and Schilling's first k-less start since '93.

Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

Well Schilling's shoulder is falling off so that's not really that odd.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 17:59 (seventeen years ago)

Baseball Tonight did a side-by-side comparison of Johan Santana's swing on his double and a swing by Justin Morneau. It was identical! Is there anything he can't do?

polyphonic, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 18:01 (seventeen years ago)

he can't make Cy Young voters realize that wins aren't the best indicator of a dude's performance.

Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

whatever the health reasons, a guy going without a strike-out for the first time in fourteen years is kind of odd and/or surprising.

Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

Um he pitched 4.1 innings and gave up 10 hits and 2 walks! He got shelled and he's heading for the DL. That's not surprising at all! It's called being hurt and sucking.

Santana's start OTOH is pretty unusual for him.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

um, hey, FOURTEEN YEARS with recording at least one strike-out in every single start. I'm sure he was banged up some of those times, as well. Shit, he was hurt pretty much every time he took the mound in '05, yet still apparently got at least one guy to strike out every start. so yeah, he's hurt, and that info makes it less surprising, but it's still an anomaly.

but yes, Johan's completely healthy and dominating yet nearly K-free start is the odder, still.

Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 18:32 (seventeen years ago)

idk guys, wang's 8-inning, 10k win was more surprising 2 me

cankles, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

Schilling's lack of K is disconcerting.

Santana's lack of K is interesting.

Wang's non-lack of K is mindboggling.

David R., Wednesday, 20 June 2007 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

THAT'S why some d00d in my fantasy league just picked wang up today, i was wondering.

"I've been here for eight years, and I've seen a lot of those kind of things," he said. "I've seen a lot of those guys [like Castillo] come in and leave. [The decision makers] don't care. They always talk about caring about it; I don't think they care."

Dr Morbius, Monday, 20 August 2007 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

Mike (NY): Should Santana have gone for 20 k's? Unselfish team play, or lack of killer instinct?

Rob Neyer: (12:39 PM ET ) I don't know that it was his decision, Mike. If he'd pitched the ninth, he'd have thrown more than 120 pitches for the first time in his career. The Twins have always babied him, and so far that's working out pretty well for everybody.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

Is this the de facto Twins thread? Because Scott Baker has a THING going on RIGHT NOW.

Leee, Saturday, 1 September 2007 02:58 (seventeen years ago)

well too bad about that thing. he was so close too!

one year passes...

Johan now trails Lincecum by just 1.5 VORP points.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 25 September 2008 21:01 (sixteen years ago)

8-0 in his last SIXTEEN starts (w/ an ERA under 3).

Way to blow, Omar.

David R., Thursday, 25 September 2008 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

if not for the bullpen, he would win 20 games this year, rite?

gabbneb, Thursday, 25 September 2008 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

I heard that the bullpen's blown 10 of his leads -- if they held merely half of them, he would already be @ 20.

David R., Thursday, 25 September 2008 22:13 (sixteen years ago)

NL pitchers, VORP 2008

Santana 73.4
Lincecum 72.5
Dempster 57.5

Webb (10th) 50.8

Dr Morbius, Monday, 29 September 2008 14:08 (sixteen years ago)

Johan had surgery yesterday bcz he pitched Saturday w/ a torn meniscus. :o

Does this improve his STORY for those who prefer Lincecum?

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 2 October 2008 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

He could have been playing baseball in October if he wasn't so greedy.

one month passes...

pretty funny Mets blogger:

Do I think Johan Santana is of sound body? HELL NO! Santana was asked if his problems of late are physical and he said no. When asked a second time he said no, by the fourth or fifth time he finally broke down that he had an issue with his back that Bobby Ojeda said could have forced him to alter his delivery. Then there is the issue of his decrease in velocity and the question of whether Santana has a tired arm or (gulp!!!!!!) the dread DEAD ARM!!!.
