Rolling NYY - BOS 2004 ALCS thread part 2: The Magic Shoe

[MOD: Continued from here: Rolling NYY - BOS 2004 ALCS thread]

This is basically a new series now, so I'm starting a new thread, even though it could all be over tonight. With a combined 7 hours sleep over the last two nights I unfortunately can't see this one, which I'm actually not too bothered about, since if the Yanks win I will have spared myself that agaony, and if the Sox win I'll be "rested" for Game 7 which, if it gets that far, somehow you just know will go on for a week.

Talk about the magic shoe, or other talismans of interest (like Pokey Reese)

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I just hope they get to play tonight.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope so, too.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I also wish that Schilling was pitching game 7 cuz that would really make the MAGIC SHOE storyline the return of muthafuckin' Willis Reed!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

A slick field might give the Yanks a fielding advantage, and maybe Schilling could use the extra day of rest. But I feel like we got to keep the Big Mo rolling.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

If Schilling makes his Frankensteinian return from the dead and wins tonight, then this is the greatest series ever no matter what happens in Game 7.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a good feeling about tonights game...knock on wood. I think I would have to go with Dave Roberts tonight though rather than Captain Caveman. Whats the worse that can happen, Roberts goes 1-4? Better than 1-24 or whatever pop up beardo bunt boy is hitting these days. I love Damon but Francona needs a kick in the ass.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

No team in baseball has even TIED the series from 0-3, correct?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Only TWO teams have ever gotten it to a Game 6 in baseball. One team has gotten it Game 7 in basketball though (the Knicks?)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a pokey reese bobblehead from when he was a pirate in '02

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm suprised Pokey hasn't started in place of Bellhorn yet.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd say there's a 5% chance they actually play tonight. it's still raining here.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I would rather have Bellhorn's patience & pop potential going 1-24 (or whatever he did) in the 9th spot than have Pokey's Willie Mays Hayes impersonation anywhere near the batting rack. This is one place where I respectfully disagree with The Hand That Traces.

The Red Sox largest problem w/ regards to scoring (as if it isn't totally obvious) is that both Damon & Bellhorn have gone 0-for-life in the series. Both Manny & Ortiz have (UNDERSTATEMENT ALERT) hit well in this series, but it don't mean slap if they're doing it with bases empty. Moving OC up to #2 didn't seem like a great idea @ first (because of his tendency to swing 1st & ask the ump where the pitch was later), but it's worked out great so far. I hadn't realized he was hitting .400 in the first 3 games of the series at the time, which fed my trepidation. Watching him work out that walk off of Sturtze in the 7th (in front of Manny's DP) after flailing on the first two pitches of the AB was astonishing.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

So...the rain delay benefits which team more? Both bullpens are probably trashed, and an extra day for Schilling probably tips it in Boston's favor.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Definitely benefits the Bosox more. Pokey's intangibles become that much more intangible with an extra day.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's the hourly forecast, looks like rain until 6pm EST and then a slight chance of rain around 8pm EST.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Even if they have to play stop start with this weather, Fox and MLB are going to DO everything they can to play this game tonight. I don't think the delay particularly benefits either team (Yankees get to let Rivera recover, the rest probably can't hurt Schilling, both team's hitters could probably use a rest too, the Sox have the momentum while the Yankees probably want to get this over with rather than have another day to dwell on their two "meltdowns" and how this series came back to NY after being up 3-0.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Sheehan of BP once again on Joe Torre, Bench Mishandler:

"Seriously, when are they going to announce the death of Kenny Lofton? The Yankees don't have a deep or effective bench, but Lofton has value as a left-handed bat and pinch-runner. Over the past two nights, there have been countless points at which he should have been inserted into the game for Jorge Posada, for the execrable Tony Clark, or for Ruben Sierra. Torre hasn't taken advantage of any of these, and it's cost the Yankees dearly..."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

A postponement probably benefits Varitek & Posada the most, even more than the bullpens. Catching 29 innings of baseball in the span of 27 hours undoubtedly puts a strain on the knees & the gluts (&, in Posada's case, his free hand).

Fuck them (FOX / MLB / The Stonecutters) if they allow this game to start only to see an interminable rain delay force both teams to go to their bullpens AGAIN.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ladies and gentlemen, here to tide you over through this lengthy rain delay, Fox presents SCOOTER singing the Gin Blossoms back catalog..." < / joebuck>

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Weather.com claims it is currently hazy in the Bronx. What does that mean exactly?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Now it is back to cloudy.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

You know who wouldn't benefit from a rain delay? ME, because I'm stoked for this game so much I've had difficulty concentrating on other things all day.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

wtf is up w/:

1. ortiz mvp talk - the postseason doesn't count for the mvp award, and he didn't deserve it for his regular season.

2. schilling's "return from the dead" - the ankle has been bothering him all year and the 'killing blow' occured in september from what i've read. it was aggravated against anaheim, he pitched ok anyway, and it finally substantially effected his performace in game 1 of the alcs. they needed to brace it. they braced it. he's fine. i mean did anyone honestly suspect he wasn't going to pitch again in the first place?? there is nothing 'miraculaous' or 'heroic' about it, please let's stop affecting/being conned by pathetically fanciful journalists who don't think this series has enough natural drama to make game 6 interesting as is.

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Yankee's fans who whine like little bitches about a little hyperbole about other players and other teams: C/D?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha... *ahem* let's refrain from any deregatory statements now, okee?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

1. They're not talking about the regular season, are they? I think the support is for ALCS MVP regardless of the outcome of the series.
2. I know you're shitting bricks right now John, and are posting such things to downplay Boston's efforts and boost the sagging confidence of yourself and your team, but come on. There's a world of difference between "the ankle has been bothering him for some time" and "the injury has been aggravated to the point of the tendon snapping over the bone and the guy should have had surgery two weeks ago, he should be on crutches instead of pitching, not to mention that he risks messing up his delivery which could hurt his arm and fuck up the rest of his career in the process".
(xpost, sorry gygax, I just typed all this, I'm done now)

He's not coming back from a blister, geez.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha, sorry, Yankee anger is hard to control.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Pre-game groop hug!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

oh christ, shitting bricks "right now"?? i've been saying this since game 1. and again from what i read "the tendon was snapping over the bone" since anaheim at least, if not september. (what you think his ankle went kablooey during his walk around the mound between warmups and first pitch or something??) the sox knew this would be a problem for him, they did what they could to alleviate it, that didn't work, and now they've figured out something that does. this is only a story because they initially failed and so did schilling, and we all want to see a magical "rebirth" esp. when it means defeating the yankees. but there's nothing magical about it, it's just a matter of mechanics, dope, and schilling doing what he's done all year, which is pitch on a shoddy ankle that will require surgery.

the sox said if they couldn't get schilling to the point that they could ensure his health (remember that they have a 30 million dollar investment in it) & effectiveness (also pretty important) they would not pitch him. period. they now say he's fine. period. but we'll pretend they're lying about all this cuz it's convenient for ratings and our own gluttonous goddamn sentiments.

i mean i can understand interest in it from a technical aspect or something but jesus, HE IS FINE.

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you watch sports? Any sports at all? Injuries are always downplayed. If a guy is playing hurt, nobody will admit it. Injuries only get announced when they are truly serious.

And if Schilling was that fine, he would have pitched last night and Pedro would have gone tonight, since that's how the rotation was set up.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I must have been wrong about the # of pitches in the three Boston games (posted on the other thread). From MLB.com:
A total of 1,864 pitches were thrown during the 15-plus hours those three games lasted -- 893 by the Yankees, 971 by the Red Sox -- about double the usual number.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

weather.com
Tonight: Mostly cloudy with occasional drizzle or sprinkles. Partial clearing late. Areas of dense fog. Low 49F. Winds NE at 20 to 30 mph.

accuwx.com says 0.06 inches of drizzle tonight.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

of course he wouldn't start over pedro on full rest. the ankle itself is worse than it was pre-alds but braced so that he could/should be effective/fully so anyway. that's not a GIVEN, there are obviously SOME risks. i never said he was 100 percent, just that the red sox (who know quite a bit better than any of us) think he's going to pitch well, and i don't consider this much of an issue. as for this being "downplayed" by anyone, are you kidding me? the whole of what i'm saying rests on what the sox said after game 1, which is that his ankle is in really bad shape, he might not pitch again this postseason, and they would not let him pitch again unless they could fix the problem.

anyway i'm not going to argue about this any more cuz we'll find out who's right in an hour. (maybe)

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

You misunderstood my "downplayed" comment ... downplaying = all but the most serious injuries are kept secret or made to appear less serious than they actually are. Therefore, when they DO announce that a guy is injured (e.g. an ace pitcher who might need season-ending surgery) then you can be sure that it is quite serious.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW I was trying to figure out how to insert the Magic Shoe into "Magic Stick" but I couldn't do it, BUT someone needs to!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I got tha magic shoe
I can pitch for hours
From the rubber
On the mound
To the plate
To the showers

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha PERFECT!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

ok MIR, then we should all be able to agree that the real "heroes" here are the red sox medical staff who took a quite serious problem and made it not so.

(as for alex in sf (et al), i love this idea you guys have that because i'm a yankees fan/because my team is losing everything i say is inherently abominably defective)(despite everything i've said so far being abominably accurate)

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

John, what about Reebok? Huh? The real unknown heroes here who created "THE MAGIC SHOE"?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

John, yes, your opinion is worthless precisely because you are a Yankee fan. I don't even pay attention to what you say, actually. I'd be more likely to listen to an entire Alan Keyes speech, etc.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Schill:
1) Not pitching with the high-top.
2) Is that blood?

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

There's no way he could be out there if he was bleeding through his industrial strength magic socks and boots.

He looks good so far ... relying almost exclusively on his fastball in the first ... velocity was OK.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Please elaborate for those of us on gameday.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It looks like my feet do after a long run, sometimes.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Great bunt by Varitek there...A-rod was stunned.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

As were we, I'm sure.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Suddenly "Red Sox" has taken on a rather gruesome new meaning.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Attaboy fellas, get in there. Let me go to sleep.

(Thanks for the rename, m0dz!)

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Time for Captain K to strut his stuff!

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

They drop Bellhorn in the order, only to have him come up with the bases loaded ... schadenfreude, my friends.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Bellhorn's going to choke.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"Bell-end" I mean.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm surprised Jeter didn't dive the 8 rows needed to catch that...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

You called it, Trace!

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm a fucking genius.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

With Bellhorn up, that double-play was pre-ordained.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

that's what I call MONEYBALL right there.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, the wind must be kicking tonight...that RF fence ain't very far.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Whew! So what's the fastest Schilling has thrown tonight? He seems to be hovering around 90, but I missed the first inning or so.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

He threw 93 or 94 to ARod.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Thee fastballs mainly seem to be coming in around 88 or 89, but he's puttign some sauce on a few, the first time through the order, just to keep em honest.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Varitek is my co-pilot.

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

What will Bellhorn do?
1) K
2) BB
3) K
vote now

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

That was a home run. WTF?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm glad my tough love is working on Bellhorn.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

If the umps blow this call...crimony.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank god. I was getting a little worried.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, siddown Joey T.

BELLHORN FOR PREZ!

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean WTF Matsui's reaction said it all.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Bellhorn is my co-pilot. (I'm easy.)

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't understand how they can possibly mess up these calls when they have umps playing the lines in the postseason who are there specifically to make these kinds of calls.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Next year, a 9-man crew: three umps in the outfield stands.

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to have a million of Mark Bellhorn's babies.

I'm going to bed now. If they blow this, or if Curt's ankle starts spraying blood at people, I certainly don't want to see it.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Good thing you went to bed, Tracer, two on nobody out for Matsui.

Whoa, he popped up!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha, on that foul ball the umps looked at each other to get their stories straight...

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Schilling's hurting now. He's generally looking less comfortable than usual out there, and that was before he had to cover first on those two plays. His velocity is OK, but his control is excellent. He's throwing lots of strikes, and the Yankees have gotten some good swings in, but they're not stringing any hits together.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ankles are overrated equipment.

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Schilling is pitching amazing for a guy who looks like he can barely fucking walk.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank god this isn't an NL game.

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, haven't seen Ronan Tynan in ages...at least a few days.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i had to mute the tv in the 6th and i'm not going to be watching any more.

schilling is throwing what he wants, where he wants, as hard as he wants it. the major reason his velocity is down is because he's conserving strength to pitch a full 9 innings, what w/ boston's pen being shot. he is NOT limping (he sprinted off the mound w/ imperfect fluency; this is not a difficult thing to do in the best of health), he doesn't even need a "magic shoe", his ankle is fine, he is in no pain and in a condition little-to-no different from every other start he made this year, and i was right, you ignorant bastards.

(i probably have to say something about a smiley face here so gygax doesn't ban me or something)

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

If only Schill had his Magic Shoe a couple days ago...they'd be opening Champagne bottles in 45 minutes or so.

Yeah he's totally 100%. That's why they are pulling him in inning 8 with only 99 pitches for Arroyo. It was all a sham.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

TERRY FRANCONA SIKE MASTER.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Not to mention that any sensible team facing elimination wouldn't bother to pitch their AOK-100%fineandhealthy ace in his normally scheduled Game 5 start. Or a Game 4 start on his usual four days of rest. Because facing elimination is no big deal, and the Sox knew that Games 4 and 5 were in the bag so they opted to save their ace for the inevitable Game 6.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never seen something like that before.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

A-Rod swatted the ball out of Arroyo's glove as he tagged him down the 1B line, Jeter scored, ball got knocked away.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

HOLY SHIT!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

ALL YANKEES AND THEIR FANS MUST BE EXECUTED NOW, KTHXBYE

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael's right, Jeter's fist pumps are making my blood boil.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

they just reversed the call! all the fans are throwing shit on the field!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF! Umpires did a fantastic job! I am amazed!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man I wish I could see this!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

TWO FANTASTIC JOBS! They got the BELLHORN call right, too!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha look at a-rod's bitch slap. now we get to watch those classy yankee fans

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

great "Bullshit" chant by the fans, though.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

this proves the yankees are black in their hearts

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHA GAYROD WAY 2 GO

experimental grandma (deangulberry), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Esp. since A-Rod tried to lie like a muthafucker there.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeez, some seriously bad umpiring quickly followed up by the right calls, eventually, tonight.

My heart can't take much more o' this.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

YES!!!!

3 MORE OUTS.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, go Aroyo!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

T/S: Umps conferences vs. instant replay.

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

9th inning, fuck yeah

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha! I love a farce!

k3rry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

(But, yeah, Arroyo really should've just tagged A-Rod with a better grip on the ball.)

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

1978 WS REGGIE JACKSON'S BIG ASS INTERFERENCE ALL OVER AGAIN! FUCK YOU YANKEES!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Why wasn't Jeter awarded second base on that play, though? He would've advanced even if they got the call right on A-Rod, or even if he had not knocked the ball out of Arroyo's glove.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post

Alex, that was one of my first World Series memories. I was a big Reggie fan back in the day.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a penalty for the interference apparently. It's like A-Rod never made contact.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It would have been an awkward play to tag ARod with his bare hand instead of his glove hand. And considering that ARod nearly knocked the glove completely off of Arroyo's hand, I can't fault Arroyo's grip on the ball.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

So much debris on the field....

Yankee fans in kneejerk anger shockah

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yankee fans as "victims" = complete ridiculousness.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

This game has gone from normal to completely fuckin' surreal.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Cowboy up!

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet in the bottom of the 9th there is going to be some weird call due to the cops. The ball bounces of a riot shield and into the stands for a ground rule double.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

No, Tim McCarver, a walk is NOT as bad as a home run. You ever heard of "double plays" or "force outs"?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

a leadoff walk = as bad a home-run = mccarver is a dumb ass

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I can't believe he just said that. Then again, I can believe it, since McCarver is senile.

1 out.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

2 outs to go!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Mets had that 16 inning game in houston, plus the infamous Buckner inning. Both were last inning comebacks. But yeah, there wasn't as much hatred.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Red Sox comeback, I'd say. We really haven't seen any totally shit plays from NY when it counted, save a bit of shaky relief pitching by Gordon.

and then you get mccarver and "ding dong" in the booth saying how it was a good idea for a-rod to try and pull that off

followed soon after by mccarver suggesting that a boston batter (forget who it was) might have done well to try and push (with his foot) a foul ball in the batters box into play to gain an advantage

now if these aren't a couple of great ideas to promote fair play to all the kids out there

what bothered me the most about the fox coverage was how they insisted on so many jump cuts of fans between pitches during games 4&5 in Boston. it was as if the fans were more important than the game and it made it very difficult to get "into" the game. the true suspense of a baseball game comes from the pitcher and the batter and fox just kept showing fans until the pitcher was already in his delivery to homeplate.

this bugged me to no end.

metfigga (metfigga), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope the NY media has the balls to vilify the classlessness of such low-down flagrant display of desperate impotence on A-Rod's part.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have a problem with A-Rod doing that -- the onus is on the umpires to get the calls correct. Which they did. It's not like he was planning it out or something -- two guys are converging in his basepath and he throws an arm at one. No big deal, the umps eventually got the call right.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i couldn't believe that bullshit that a-fraud pulled last night. he was acting like some slapdick in a tuesday night beer-league game, not like a future hall of famer in a league championship game. i am so glad he didn't become a red sox this year. his play and attitude this series reminds me of all the poisonous red sox teams of my youth, the 25 cabs for 25 players teams with the surly stars like yaz and rice and torrez. a-fraud is as talented a player as i've ever seen but that bush-leauge attitude of his makes it hard to enjoy watching him. sure does make watching him fail extra sweet though.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

what bothered me the most about the fox coverage was how they insisted on so many jump cuts of fans between pitches during games 4&5 in Boston.

didn't bother me, i saw my friend john in the stands. he's had season tickets since 85 (intherited them from his dad) and until last year you could see him over the batters left shoulder whenever the tv cameras showed a right handed batter in the batters box. but he upgraded his seats to the redsox side (read: sunny side) of the field so i hadn't seen him. it was a pleasant surprise.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

1) Fox should not hire film school drop-outs as directors & camera operators.

2) Trying to squeeze in TWO crowd shots between every pitch of the late innings is not only annoying; it is also tempting fate re: missing the damn pitch (WHICH HAS HAPPENED).

3) The Olde English Tim puts in his hair is obviously killing whatever brain cells were left after Deion dumped the champagne on his head.

4) Piazza & Leiter in the booth in the near future = a thing of beauty, perhaps?

5) Perhaps I'm biased (gee, you think?), but the Fox dolts ("ding dong" especially) seemed to talk about the Yankees the same way Fox News schills big up Pres. Bush.

5a) Fuck that WebMD "Red Sox fans are suffering from a broken heart" booshit.

6) Could someone PLEASE save Jeannie Zelasko from her wardrobe & makeup people?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I gotta admit I find Jeannie Zelasko to be very funny. That women will READ any CLICHES they put in front of her! SHE HAS NO SHAME!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM on Slap-Rod. Great player, Bush supporter, punk-ass. He and his fellow smoothie Jeets sure have "class," if that's marked by boring interviews and smug marketability.

Cheating? Atleast be subtle about it. The Yanks and their fans revel in it (Reggie's hip in '78 WS, the bleacher brat, etc).

If the Sox DON'T pull it off people will hear Boston fans screaming on the West Coast.

e-mojo, most of those called-strike-3s on BB -- aren't. I've never seen him pull crap like a slap.

"Somewhere along the line, Derek Lowe, try to suppress the laughter, will be a hero"

i have never hoped my dad was right about anything more than i hope he is right about this. my pop's in his 60's now, this is it. i'm half afraid this team will kill him if they lose OR if they win.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Why be nervous, we're going with the most erratic and emotional starter since Oil Can Boyd! Francona just better be like fucking lightning with the hook. This bullpen is solid and Mendoza hasn't even been used ONCE! (is this actually correct??? is he even on the roster?)

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Aye right. You know what I may ultiamtely remember most from last night's most memorable of games, is the fact that Alex Rodriguez was called "unprofessional" by Kevin Millar. Ya can't make this stuff up, people.

October 17, 2004
BOSTON
Maybe it wasn't Grady Little's fault, after all. And maybe it's not even all Terry Francona's fault, either. Maybe the Yankees are too deep and strong and the Red Sox too weak and jinxed, and maybe it's not ever going to change. Not in our lifetimes, anyway. Maybe the Red Sox will always come up a run or 10 runs short.

Maybe they'll always suffer the wrong injury at the wrong time. Or the wrong bad break. Maybe they'll always have a Dale Sveum sending baserunners home from third to their inevitable demise.

With apologies to Pedro Martinez, whose quotes are even better than his pitches now, maybe the Yankees will always be their daddies.

They are today, that's for sure.

The Olde Towne is a depressed town now. The faithful fans were hoping for a hometown turnaround when the evening began, but Fenway Park was as quiet as a library by the time reality set in. Later, there were boos, followed by sarcastic cheers.

This was supposed to finally be the year of the Red Sox now that they had the best one-two pitching combination in the American League.

But Curt Schilling came down with a bum ankle and Martinez was made to eat his own words.

One positive side effect to the Yankees' 3-0 lead in games is that maybe we can stop hearing about Schilling's ankle sheath and his subluxation. He pitched like hell in Game 1 and now he is done, why not just leave it at that?
Speculation about whether he can pitch Game 7 is about as worthwhile as a Francona news conference today because there's more chance we'll see the return of the unfairly maligned Little to manage here again than a Game 7 in this series. Little may have left Martinez in a batter or two too long in last year's ALCS but Francona set a bad tone by acting panicky and prickly. What's worse?

Over the years, the Yankees have always found some inventive, surprising and heartbreaking ways to torture the Red Sox. This time, it appears they're going with an old staple, the old-fashioned bludgeoning. The Yankees have put themselves within one inevitable victory of their 40th American League title, and after burning Tim Wakefield last night, Francona will use Derek Lowe tonight, which is like placing a filet mignon in Mo Vaughn's locker.

Dead meat.

Every important game and every big deal seems to go the Yankees' way. The Red Sox have been feeling comfortable lately with their inability to acquire Alex Rodriguez last winter since Manny Ramirez posted MVP-worthy stats. But today, they can regret that, too, because all the folks who questioned A-Rod's abilities now know how off-base they were. Rodriguez almost did enough to single-handedly wreck the Red Sox. But he had help, oh man did he ever.

Rodriguez sent one baseball onto Lansdowne Street (which was miraculously tossed all the way back over the Green Monster - the best throw by a Bostonian all night), lined two run-scoring doubles and scored five times, and nearly everyone else did a heap of damage, as well.

Gary Sheffield, who was jumping out of his size-11s to swing, also homered over the Green Monster and hit it twice and added a fourth hit, raising his ALCS batting average to .692. Hideki Matsui raised his series average to .600 with five hits, including two homers and two doubles. Like Rodriguez, Matsui scored five runs. Bernie Williams batted and hit enough to get the career LCS record for everything by the end of the game (well, at least hits, extra-base hits and RBI).

Maybe Boston's smug club president Larry Lucchino will finally regret not going the extra dollar or two for A-Rod today (OK, it was more like $15 mil). And maybe we all overrated the Red Sox. They certainly looked a lot better from afar.

They had every chance in the world to win this game, with cocky young Bronson Arroyo going against an obviously ailing Kevin Brown, who moves like an elderly man nowadays. But though Boston knocked Brown around, it couldn't quite do enough against makeshift reliever Javier Vazquez, who hadn't beaten any team of note since Joe Torre generously selected him for the All-Star team.

Vazquez had a little margin for error as Red Sox pitchers served up an embarrassing array of BP fastballs, nothing curves and hit-me knucklers. The Yankees didn't need luck, a break or anything else intangible. They didn't need the usual heroics from a role player. No Aaron Boone or Bucky Dent.
They didn't need an unfortunate strategical move by Boston or any sort of extra help. Rodriguez, Sheffield and Co. basically beat the reviled Red Sox over the head with their sticks, and maybe Boston's too woozy today to get up off the turf.

YANKS' BATS DO THEIR BIDDING
Kevin Kernan
New York Post

BOSTON — The biggest bats finally shut up the biggest baseball mouths as the quietest professional, Hideki Matsui, helped lead the Yankees.

The Bronx Bombers annihilated the Red Sox last night at Fenway Park, and believe it, this one was personal. The final score was 19-8, but it was much more impressive than that.

Godzilla homered twice, produced five hits and scored five runs, and is going to be the ALCS MVP with 10 RBI after three games.

The 19 runs were the most ever scored by the Yankees in the postseason. The Yankees buried their undisciplined arch-rivals, putting them in their place and shutting up the Red Sox and the full house of tortured Boston faithful.

"We wanted to make a statement and we did," said Gary Sheffield, who was 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs. "We're not here to win a war of words. We're here to win the games."

Said Joe Torre, "Our players have a lot of determination. You saw it. You can't teach that."

No, you can't. Remember, it was Curt Schilling who talked about shutting up 55,000 Yankee fans in Game 1 and barked all year about coming here to break the Curse, but the Curse of the Bambino continues. Exactly one year after Aaron Boone finished off the Red Sox with his 11th-inning home run, the Yankees hammered the 2004 Sawx into submission on this Oct. 16.

This was baseball brutality and when Bernie Williams doubled home Sheffield and Matsui in the seventh off Alan Embree, the fans began to flood the exits. It was Embree who came into the clubhouse chanting "1918" on Thursday. These Sox will never learn to stop mocking the Curse.

At one point the Yankees scored 11 unanswered runs. Five innings into this game, the Yankees produced 10 extra-base hits, behind the bashing of Matsui — who has become the Yankees' Iron Horse — Sheffield and another monster game from Alex Rodriguez.

This wasn't just about the Yankees taking a 3-0 lead in the ALCS and most certainly punching their ticket to their 40th World Series. This was about driving a stake through the heart of Red Sox Nation.

No team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit. In ALCS history, no team has even won the fourth game after falling behind 3-zip.

All season, the Yankees let their play speak for themselves. The Red Sox talk turned out to be so much bigger than their walk.

Before this series started, Sheffield told friends how much he wanted to take care of business against Boston. He was not alone. The Yankees were tired of hearing comments from the likes of Kevin Millar and Johnny Damon, tired of hearing that the Red Sox were going to run the table this postseason, winning 11 straight.

After their three-game sweep of the ailing and sloppy Anaheim Angels, the Red Sox bravado became even bolder. All along, the Yankees were taking mental notes. The Yankees came into this series looking to make a statement: This is how you play the game and always respect the game.

In the first two games, the Yankees beat Red Sox aces, Schilling and Pedro Martinez, but last night, on a cool New England evening, they just beat the cocky Red Sox silly, starting off by corn-rolling starter Bronson Arroyo, who did not make it out of the third inning.

The Red Sox led 4-3 after three innings, marking their first lead of the series. A-Rod then immediately tied it with a home run as the Yankees kept bashing away, teaching the Red Sox a lesson they will never forget.

A-ROD HOMER GETS SLAUGHTER STARTED
Mike Vaccaro
New York post
Oct 17

BOSTON — This time, the Red Sox didn't even give their fans the familiar tease — the usual angst, suspense, agony.

For the second straight year, the Yankees and the Red Sox began a game on Oct. 16 and ended it on Oct. 17. The last time, it took an Aaron Boone home run at 12:16 in the morning to kill off the Red Sox, to send their Nation off into a quiet, dreadful winter, and if you'd have asked them, they would never believe they could feel an ache worse than that.

Except last night, when Bill Mueller's lazy fly ball settled into Bernie Williams' mitt at exactly 12:30 in the morning, what you saw at Fenway Park was the worst kind of emotion:

Complete capitulation.

They know they are through embracing this team, enjoying it, believing in it. Those who stayed to the bitter end saw one of the worst thumpings in postseason annals, one of the worst bludgeonings in the long, colorful history of Red Sox-Yankees. It ended 19-8, but it felt even worse than that, because at the end of that score was another one.

This one 3-0.

This one spelling the end of this chapter of the greatest feud in all of professional sports. The Red Sox knew it, even if they couldn't say it. The Yankees knew it, even if they wouldn't. Anyway, the empty eyes and vapid stares of the last Fenway stragglers said all anyone needed to hear.

On a night the Sox could still have fought their way back into the series, still kept a grip on this dream season of theirs, they had the misfortune to have the best seats in the house for the hour when the Yankees we'd expected to see all season finally reported for work.

In the earliest version of this Yankee blueprint, there was going to be an endless string of nights like this one, nights when they were going to treat major-league pitchers like Iron Mike machines, denting fences when they weren't clearing them. And conducting the whole thing was going to be Alex Rodriguez, the best player bringing the most dangerous bat to the best lineup.

Somehow, the Yankees won 106 games before we saw this all explode for real.

But win No. 107 was something else, something to see.

"It's hard to describe when it happens like that," Joe Torre said. "You saw it. You almost can't explain it."

Instead, if you are a Yankee fan, you enjoy it. You especially enjoy the moment in the top of the third inning, right after the Red Sox had stormed back from an 0-3 hole to grab their first lead of this series, 4-3. It lasted exactly four pitches. The fourth was a slider from Bronson Arroyo that seemed to screech to a halt in mid-flight, just high enough for A-Rod to belt it over The Wall, over the Monster Seats, over the screen and out onto Lansdowne Street.

With one swat, he'd shaken this game like a snow bubble. He'd filched the Red Sox' lead. And he'd taken a Hoover to all the excitement, all the life, all the energy that had electrified Fenway Park from the moment they'd opened the gates. One swing is all it took.

"The only way an inning you score runs in [as the Red Sox did] is going to be validated is if you can shut down the other club in the following inning," said Torre. "It's like football. You score a touchdown and get the ball right back."

The Red Sox never got the ball back. Rodriguez, the old high-school quarterback, wouldn't let them. The rest of the night was a blur of bad Red Sox pitching and Yankees crossing the plate. But it took A-Rod to make the rest of it happen. One swing is all it took.

One swing, on another Red Sox-Yankees night that would bridge the 16th and 17th days of October, and A-Rod had delivered another death knell to a city that knows the melody all too well. And had already begun accepting their fate.

this is such a beautiful thing. somewhere dave popshots is weeping tears of joy.

I'm not weeping, but I am ultrasuperhappy. For one, my stomach wasn't churning as much as during the last 3 games. For two, grabbing a sizable lead early allowed me to comfortably leave my seat on the couch & do some stationary biking w/out suffering the wrath of the Superstitious Curse Boogeyman Feng Shui Gods.

As for Lowe - it would've been nice to see him start the 7th (especially since he only threw 69 pitches!), but on 3 days' rest (& having warmed up in Game 5, & maybe Game 6?), w/ a cushy lead, you don't want (or need) to take chances. Not that putting in Pedro Goo-Goo wasn't chancey, of course, but I'm fine w/ that.

The Pedro Move is the Pedro Move - maybe it was for some redemption, maybe it was to get Pedro some throwing in before a possible World Series start in Game 1, maybe Francona wanted him in there, maybe Pedro bullied his way onto the mound. Whatevah. With a 7 run lead, all you have to do is throw strikes, and that's what Pedro did, and he got out of the inning juuuust fine. Not to say there wasn't a bit of agita during the 7th, but I was gonna have that shit regardless - it was just as likely for the Yanks to drop a bomb on the Bosox as it was for the Sox to jump on Kevin Brown like pitbulls attacking a fat kid.

Post-game on ESPN, Gammons was interviewing Gabe Kapler, & Kapler was telling him, "C'mon, dude, celebrate! We know you're a fan; have fun! Enjoy it!" That was swell.

Also, I would just like to type this phrase right now because the following statement might not be applicable for much longer, but it sure as fuck applies right now: TERRY FRANCONA IS A MANAGERIAL GENIUS.

These articles from a few days ago are so awesome to read now.
I just got back from watching the game with friends and getting good and liquored up in the process. I still can't believe it ... the whole game, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. When Damon got thrown out at the plate in the first, I figured that lost run would end up being significant later on. But it wasn't. I figured that the missed scoring oppurtunities in the middle innings would come back to haunt them once the Yankees scored five runs off the Boston bullpen and made the game close. But that didn't happen either. The game was a laugher ... it was almost too easy!

What a series.

But what does it mean when your #3 hitter can't drive in any runs? It means he's letting the team down. If you're a run producer, you need to get the job done when your team's struggling. It doesn't mean anything if you're Manny Ramirez and you're hitting .300 with no RBIs. That's not good. That's why the Red Sox were in a 3-0 hole.[/Joe Morgan]

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 21 October 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Walks are for sissies. Manny's supposed to be the leader of that team. His job is to swing the bat and drive in runs. And he didn't do his job this time.

You know who did do his job? Mark Bellhorn. Some people complain about the K's, but again, his job was to set the table for the big RBI men, and you can't do that unless you take some hacks. Bellhorn is a scrappy, competitive player who wants to win badly. His homer in Game 6 convinced both teams that the Sox were capable of winning on the road. In this series, Bellhorn showed why he's one of the most valuable players in the entire American League [/John Kruk]

I will have a lengthy section devoted to this topic in my forthcoming book, The 2004 Boston Red Sox Were God's Gift to The Baseball World, but in the ALCS, with runners in scoring position and 0 outs, Manny had a .0235 OBP and a .0367 OPS; but with 1 or 2 outs, that number jumps up to .0277 OBP and .0389 OPS. Historically, in those situations, Ramirez hits at a .1234 OBP and .2112 OPS clip in the regular season, and at a .1354 OBP and .2323 in the post-season. However, in 387 total post-season plate-appearancezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz [/Rob Neyer]

"BOTTOM SIXTH

Captain Dreamboat begins the inning with a weak grounder to shortstop. Jeter is now 6-for-29 (.207) in this series, giving him a career batting average of .268 in ALCS play. Someone might want to pass that note along to Buck and McCarver if they ever release their lips from Jeter's butt and come up for air."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 21 October 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a shame that the Red Sox's miraculous come back overshadowed a fantastic series by Derek Jeter. When he wasn't driving in runs or scoring runs, he was leading by example, pumping his fist and cheering on his teammates after every tough break went against this scrappy bunch of pinstripes. Even after ground-out after ground-out with runners in scoring position, even after selflessly giving himself up to advance a runner one measley base, you could find him on the top step of the dugout, exhorting his teammates towards this historic climax. He was there for every hard-fought at-bat, every misplaced pitch, every hard-luck hit that fell into the upper deck or left field bleachers for the Red Sox. Clearly Derek Jeter is a man among men, a god among mice, a sun amidst stars, and it's a shame that we won't be seeing more of him during this post-season. He exemplifies the greatness of this all-American pasttime, and he exemplifies the greatness that is New York Yankee baseball. [/John Sterling]

See, the thing with numbers is that they can't be trusted. You can't just sit in an office with a COMPUTER, hit some keys, do some math, and tell people how to play baseball. You gotta get out on the field, get dirty, swing at pitches, take grounders. All this Moneyball stuff about Pythagorean Records & on-base percentage and this OPS, that's not baseball. That's homework. Those numbers, what do they mean? It's just stuff on a piece of graph paper. Championships aren't won on a piece of paper. Games aren't won on a piece of paper. They're won on the field.

Speaking of winning, my friends at the Elias Sports Bureau have created a new statistic called Choking Percentage. It's a combination of the number of consecutive games lost by the leading team divided by the number of games the team in the lead needed to win to clinch a series. And, once again, with the highest score possible, the 2004 New York Yankees are right on top. [/Jim Kaat]

There sure were plenty of well-scrubbed shiny white faces whooping at up at "the greatest bar" as Fox insisted on showing us. between that and the endless shots of "jillian's" last year, I'm now aware that Boston's white population can drunk and act like idiots with the best of 'em.

boston's fans can act like bigger idiots than anyone, trust me on that one. i've never noticed that fenway was any more white than anyplace else i've seen a game. it was certainly less white than the expos game i went to. cubs games are at least as white and even less latino which is odd for a city with such a huge latino population. actually the games i've gone to at the cell have a more diverse crowd.

where is the greatest bar anyway? jillian's is right across the street from fenway and the cask is just down the road but where the hell is the greatest bar? is it where mama kin used to be by any chance? what IS where mama kin was if it's not?

it's common knowledge that yankee stadium is the most ethnically (and socioeconomically? i hope) diverse stadium in baseball. (this is somewhat surprising in light of the spankees being such white-bread, white collar elitists [cuz their players are clean cut and do not have any crazy antics, and though john henry could buy gs3 eight times over, he is much less the ruthless businessman and his only desire is to bring a championship to the people of boston and he in no way treats his team as a cash machine.].)

- Kevin Millar is a yapper
- I don’t know how to feel about the whole Nomar thing, I totally understand his hurt but I also feel like he didn’t handle it the best AND they threw him under the bus a bit?
- I wish I loved anything as much as Pedro loved plunking
- After Wakefield gives up the walk of home run to Boone in the 2003 ALCS, there’s a bit where he’s in the dressing room after being consoled by teammates and someone says “It’s not your fault, Wake,” and he goes, sounding utterly defeated, “really?”
-Grady Little, my GOD

- on leaving Pedro out too long:
Netflix: did you pay attention to his pitch count?
GL: No

GL: if they would have held an election between me and Osama bin Laden I was not gonna win (on being bad and hated)

GL: I didn’t go by how he looked, I went by the stuff Pedro had

Also crazy to remember that Pedro/Clemens in 2003 was a rerun of the '99 ALCS, when Pedro beat Roger in Boston's only win. Which, incredibly, was just a few days removed from his legendary 6 innings of relief against Cleveland - 6 innings that he said changed his career - for the worse

I’ve never been in more pain once the plane took off. That’s when I knew I was really, really bad. I thought someone was stabbing me in the back. I got really scared, it was like having a knife going slowly through my back. I started screaming. The entire plane got quiet. The medical staff had to jump on me.

...

That was the game that actually developed the rest of the shoulder problems for me. That’s what got the 98 mph lowered to 90-whatever, whatever I was. That injury actually took a big chunk of my career. I did more damage to my shoulder because of that. I don’t regret it at all. I had a beautiful career and I was able to come back. I don’t regret it one bit. I’m extremely proud to have done it. I’d never suggest it to anybody with a bright future, but I’m so proud to have done it.

He can't remember what he said to Pedro after the seventh because it was twenty years ago? He can't remember what happened in the most important game, and most important moments of his career? In the game that completely defines him in the eyes of everybody? The guy had no real rebuttal to anything and comes off like a complete liar.

I finished watching this last night. I really liked the second episode, I'd forgotten about so much of the regular season stuff. I think the third episode didn't quite capture the full-on insanity of the ALCS, but it was good.

Millar was entertaining throughout and is essentially the star of the doc, Schilling managed to stop being crazy for a day and really added a lot, Epstein and Hoyer were funny and honest, Ortiz didn't say a lot but is still fun to listen to. It's interesting that only Torre, Clemens, and Sheffield were there to present the Yankees' side of things, but they said nothing of substance. When did they start to panic? Why couldn't Jeter man up and talk on camera about how it felt to get reverse swept by his biggest rivals?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 27 October 2024 12:30 (one year ago)

Watched the first episode last night. No Manny interviews yet, so I assume he declined to participate. Joe Torre has definitely aged since I last saw him. I could probably do with about 22% less Millar, but maybe I'll warm up to him. I was waiting to hear at least brief mention of one person, but it never came--I probably don't have to say who that is.

I'm about to go where nobody has ever gone before--I'd need to double-check, so please, don't get after me too aggressively here! A very half-hearted defense of Little: like my memories of the inning itself, it felt like the only really hard-hit ball in that infamous sequence was Jeter's double (which was almost caught). Obviously, Pedro should have been taken out immediately after that, and probably shouldn't have even started the inning.

The following people refused to participate:

- Manny
- Nomar
- Arod
- Jeter

Surprising amount of former Yankees though

I have to give you a trigger warning, gyac--are you sure you want me to speak his name?

In 2003, James was hired by a former reader, John Henry, the new owner of the Boston Red Sox.

That should be in quotes--from Wikipedia.

Also kept waiting for the Greek God of Greek Gods, but I see now he didn't join the team till 2004.

lol oh! I guess they had Billy Beane in there more than enough to cover that ground.

I thought it was good they covered so much of the regular series. These WS teams you see become legendary as soon as they win but watching the series they went through dead stretches like literally any other team. And the AL East teams faced each other a lot more than than they do now. Means there was always something happening.

That was one of two good John Henry lines

Interviewer, offscreen: You popped champagne with Billy, did you do that for Theo?
JH: no.

Enjoyed Epstein dropping f-bombs left and right.

Theo was unbelievably young. He’s still not even fifty! I enjoyed the mention of his twin asking him “What the fuck are you doing?” at one point.

(His twin is not identical, or Theo might never have needed the gorilla suit)

Got halfway through E2 yesterday, will finish tonight. I have to admit: I have no recollection at all of all that A-Rod/Nomar drama, or that two trades had actually been completed that were overturned.
