Who'd have thunk it?

Awesome. This matchup will be great.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

nelly should sing the national anthem for the cards!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Wakefield starting game 1!!!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Cards x factor = Carpenter. I am not thinking about this tonight though!!!!!!

bnw (bnw), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

My roommate is a diehard Boston fan, and I've been a Cardinals fan since birth (grew up right outside St. Louis) so this is going to be a great series.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still a Carpenter fan from his days with the J's.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

there is no reason to think this won't be a fantastic series.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

One more time: W00T!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

who are we (besides bnw) rooting for? i am torn.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i am rooting for the cardinals (a) for scott rolen; and (b) because they aren't the red sox.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

's gonna be a Dominican shootout!

bnw (bnw), Friday, 22 October 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Boo on gun jokes!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 22 October 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, just to kill this possible gag, too - blah blah LAUGH RIOT blah blah.

Where's your Bob Gibson now, huh? HUH?

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Friday, 22 October 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, anyone here familiar with the "EA Curse"? Guess who's on the cover of MVP Baseball 2004?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 22 October 2004 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm also a fan of Carpenter from his time with the Jays.
But I'm mainly cheering for the Sox because that was my pre-postseason prediction.

Six games.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 22 October 2004 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I sort of like the fact that it's two teams that have been around and in the same cities since 1901. Last time that happened, if I'm not misreading, was 1976 (Cincinnati Reds vs. NY Yankees).

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 October 2004 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, a classic matchup. I'm torn in this series because I really want to see the Bosox finally break through. On the other hand, I have such tremendous respect for what the Cardinals have done this year that I don't think I can root against them. Except that I don't really like TLR much, and I hate Julian Tavarez.

Sox in 7.

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 22 October 2004 06:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Ho-lee crap, that's a big thread. And I'm up way too late.

I've just realized how pro-Cardinal partisan Buck and McCarver are going to be. I am going to mute them and play LPs by the Modern Lovers instead.

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Friday, 22 October 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

You have to figure that McCarver will probably pull a Ray Knight and bring up the 1967 series every fifteen minutes.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 22 October 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah McCarver will be on his high dumb fucking horse. This is the matchup I've wanted all along. Cards are the better team on paper, but lets see how the Sox hold up. Hell... St. Louis is my distant second favorite team.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 22 October 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Neil Diamond better make a Fenway appearance ... now is the time!!!

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 22 October 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I still "hate" the Cards from the '80s, and I want a bonfire of "1918" shirts. Plus I want the homefield "advantage" team to lose every WS as long as the All-Star Game gimmick lives.

Still, I like Edmonds, Pujols, Rolen. I won't be crushed by any outcome.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 22 October 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

rooting for the sox here, i spent an hour working two phones at once to try to get sox tickets yesterday. didn't happen. anyone know if any tickets will be going on sale for the games in st. louis? and does anyone have a couch upon which i can crash if i score said tix?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 22 October 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

My apologies to all those cheering for the Sox, but the curse™ is just too cool for me to want it to go away. It's one of the best things going in professional sports. Go Cards!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 22 October 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

the curse is a device created by dan shaughnessey to send his daughters to college. until he wrote that rediculous book it didn't exist. no one in boston ever spoke of it until it was rammed down their throats in the '90's. f' the curse. in the words of curt schilling, "we got babe ruth's ghost a hooker and now everything’s cool".

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

As long as The Curse came up ... someone on the SABR list this summer maintained that the Babe being sold by Frazee to finance "No No Nanette" is utter bullshit. NNN wasn't staged til 1925, I think, and Broadway didn't have 4-5 years' pre-production back then.

I seem to recall some NY Times writer from '86 getting the blame for creating The Curse in a column.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

My first big laugh of the day:

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I was under the impression that Shaugnessy was the culprit - he probably didn't invent the curse, but he sure as hell created The Nation. He wrote the bloody book, he touts the power & wrath & malaise of the Nation in every bloody column, and he won't hesitate to hop in front of a TV camera & offer the rest of the sports world a brief glimpse into the supposed beleagured, tortured, cynical life of a Boston Red Sox fan. Every time I see Danny Boy & his sad sack convertible fro on the screen, I'm torn between buying him a beer and hitting him with a Baseball Encyclopedia.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

This is, on paper anyway--up and down both lineups and including fielding, pitching and general moxy, the best Series matchup since AT LEAST '95 and maybe all the way back to '91 (and I think it's probably better than both of those so we may really have to go back.) I can't believe this isn't going to go 7 games and be an absolute wing-ding of a series. I really can't pick and I have little to no rooting interest in either team, but I'm gonna say that the Cards are just a LITTLE more together (until the Sox REALLY win it all and despite the ALCS win, I still think of them as the Sox who blew Game 7 last year.) Also this is one of those years where the NL home field advantage is huge. Forcing Ortiz to play a position and potentially losing Millar. Ouch! So Cardinals in 7, but with absolutely zero confidence.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 22 October 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the nation has been around since the 80's, i'm not sure but i *think* he may have boosted it from "celtic nation" which is what celtics hall of famer (and former [current?]) color commentator tommy heinsohn would call the fans in every city who sat behind the c's bench wearing green. they were in every nba city. that was in the early '80's, not sure if bosox nation came before or after but i'm almost certain it's been around longer than the curse.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 22 October 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Forcing Ortiz to play a position and potentially losing Millar.

i wonder if it will be forcing ortiz to play a position and potentially losing nixon? probably not seeing as there's no southpaw in the cards rotation but if nixon continues to struggle who knows...

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 22 October 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Either way you are weakening either your right-side defense or your offense considerably.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 22 October 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

no doubt about that but i'd still rather take the chance that the good from papi's bat will outweigh the bad from his glove (this sentence was typed with crossed fingers).

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 22 October 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha wait I'm not suggesting benching Ortiz (that's crazy talk, he's their best offensive player.) I'm just saying that the this time being forced to play the DH as a position player is a pretty big deal.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 22 October 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Neat angle: the Cards (known as the Gashouse Gang in the 40s) going up against the modern-day Gashouse Gang. CREDIT ME IF YOU NIP THIS IDEA FOX SPORTS!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 22 October 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

That even has a '46 Series role-reversal aspect to it.

I'm sticking with my playoff prediction from a couple of weeks ago. Sox over Cards in 6.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 22 October 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

the cardinals were always my second favorite team. willie mcgee is my favorite player of all time. and as a matter of principle, i root for the nl. but i live with a yankees fan and have therefore seen a lot more of the sox (and secretly rooted for them) than the cardinals. i steadfastly pulled for the sox in '86 (my parents were out of town so i had to watch games 6-7 at the house of a friend who was a mets fan). i don't like trl. i love the baseball fans of st louis. pujols is a fucking star, although i don't like the porn face he displays while batting. the only sox player i actively dislike is pedro (who increasingly looks like a witch!). i love larry walker. i don't know what to do.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 22 October 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm rootin' for the Sox. I think they'll win in 6, maybe 7.

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Friday, 22 October 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I like both teams, so I'll be happy no matter what. But I do want Red Sox fans to stop whining about their fucking curse, so I'll guess I'm a Red Sox backer. Prediction: Cardinals in 7.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 22 October 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

the gashouse gang thing is ridiculous. and its going to be cards in 7.

this series has: a future-legends faceoff in pedro vs. pujols, primeval picturesque pinball park vs. corporate cookie-cutter colisseum (blessedly ablaze and bleeding with benevolence), neurosis (lowe) vs. psychosis (tavarez), swift, splashy centerfielders, adroit columbian shortstops, two of the dullest, most efficient closers in baseball, incapacitated aces, a knuckleballer starting game 1 and a scrapheap staff opposing him, hope: the malignant, and the benign; the non-confrontational, congenial captain vs. the arrogant, affrontive asshole, humble homespuns at the hotcorner, two heavyweights: one gritty, unconscious, left for dead but never ko'd, well-rounded, a patient, perfect swinging machine with the most devastating 1-2 punch on the planet to boot, in the finish, unyielding, unrelenting and unassailable; one suave, unpredictable, a drunken streetbrawler on the attack, spectacular yet coldly fundamental yet always precarious on the defense, a cooly confident head, legs that move with surprising quickness, and a torso made of solid steel; two journeymen second baseman, both of whom suck, and yet don't, history, tradition, and folklore: its repitition, its guardian, and its preservation, vs. its making, its assailant, and its destruction. (and that's just off the top of my head!)

John (jdahlem), Friday, 22 October 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

that was beautiful.

(sox in 6.)

maura (maura), Saturday, 23 October 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

the non-confrontational, congenial captain vs. the arrogant, affrontive asshole,

???

Cards in howevermanyIdon'tcare.

bnw (bnw), Saturday, 23 October 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be St. Francis of Assisi v. Pedro?

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 23 October 2004 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

????

c'mon guys, captain=skipper=manager=francona y la russa. francona (while no torre) has a rep as a low-key "player's manager" who often lets his players get the best of him, while la russa is just that (imo)

(not that pedro isn't as well, and i prolly should've dealt w/ him some more, though in my doubtlessly soon-to-be-regretted opinion he just isn't That Important anymore)

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 23 October 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

No Carpenter, no Kline. We have one lefty in the bullpen, but he's as big as two.

bnw (bnw), Saturday, 23 October 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW - Sox in 7. Dance knuckler dance!

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 23 October 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Pedro will have at least one completely dominating start in this series. He's overdue.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 23 October 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure if any of you read up on what exactly Schilling's medical treatment was (I know I didn't) but check this article out. That's a pretty intense risk. I'm glad it paid off but wow, if it didn't... yuck.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 23 October 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The YES Network site has an article (from BP's Will Carroll) that goes into GREAT detail explaining what was done by the Red Sox medical staff & all ancillary concerns regarding Schilling's start (the bloody sock, running to cover the bag @ 1st in the 4th inning, any possible cascading effects, etc).

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 23 October 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ortiz with some AMAZING woodwork there...Williams looks like garbage tonight so far.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Saturday, 23 October 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Fantastic John! Although I don't really get the thing about the 2 heavyweights (v possibly bcz I know approximately 0 about the Cards) it may have been my favorite part.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Sunday, 24 October 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, this is already a super fun game. (Dig Edmonds fantastic bunt single in the 2nd! I always wonder hitters don't do that more.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 24 October 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cards could be winning if Pujols was himself.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 24 October 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

That bunt really was amazing, I've never seen that before.

Why did the Cards not tag Manny out there, he was dead to rights!?

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Sunday, 24 October 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Tony Womack: ouch.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 24 October 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice one Manny

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 24 October 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the worst pinch-running I ever seen. [/Moesyzlak]

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 24 October 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy shit! Marquis scores after the S-L-O-W-E-S-T path around third base I've ever seen.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 24 October 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Manny is absolutely FUCKING. UP. That's 2 ugly plays in a row.

LMFAO.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 24 October 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I curse Manny and his next seven generations.

the apex of nadirs (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 24 October 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never seen a guy jam his leg into the earth like that and then go tumbling. Tres bizarre.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 24 October 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, that was certainly a generous called third strike on Edmonds.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 24 October 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ladies and gentlemen, DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR TELEPHONES ARE TONIGHT?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 24 October 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Foulke will blow it

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 24 October 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Not with that strike zone being called tonight.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 24 October 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Rob, who are you rooting for this series?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Cards. Just to inflict that much more pain upon teh Cubfans. Also Pujols is probably my favorite non-White Sox player. I can't think of any Red Sox I actually *like* outside of Varitek. Also if the Red Sox win, we'll never hear the end of it. Their fans are already annoying enough as it is...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, it's a midwest thing. Fuck the east coast, you know? I know more Cardinals fans personally, too, so there's that. I have a few reasons to root for them.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

OH GOD, BENNIFER PART 2!

the apex of nadirs (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I like both teams, pretty much, but I wouldn't mind hearing about the end of the curse -- let the Red Sox leave the Cubs (and White Sox) standing alone as far as being pathetic losers.

That said, if the Cards win, yeah, that'd be allreet.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to see the BoSox win so those "1918!" chants can turn into "2000!"

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Tavarez = Loser. Haw!

the apex of nadirs (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Manny should buy Bellhorn a car from saving him from being a goat.

It was a fun game to watch.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the record for runs scored in a World Series?

the apex of nadirs (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah, I forgot -- other reasons to root for Cards-

1. NY Yankees 183,335,513
2. Boston 125,208,542
3. Anaheim 101,909,667
4. NY Mets 95,754,304
5. Philadelphia 93,219,167
6. Chicago Cubs 91,101,667
7. Los Angeles 89,694,343
8. Atlanta 88,507,788
9. San Francisco 82,019,166
10. St. Louis 81,008,517

Also, if they win, the sabreheads and Moneyball zealots will never shut up, etc etc

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

but don't forget that mr. SABR himself (William James) is also on that Boston payroll...

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Also...what do you think the odds of hitting two homeruns in consecutive games that hit the foul pole? Bellhorn is a freak. The Fenway foul pole at least didn't make that weird clank that the one in the Bronx did.

Quite odd.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

LOL -- on ESPN they just cut to a live shot of Peter Gammons and all the Red Sox fans lingering at the park drowned out his report with a chant of 'Pee - ter Gamm - ons *clap* *clap* *clap clap clap*'

too funny!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

what are the odds of winning a game where you commit FOUR errors? that's just wrong, man

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

haha the Mets

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Please note that Bellhorn's Pesky Pole jab hit the foul pole netting, which made a nice CHAWOOMPH sound, as opposed to his Yankee Stadium homer, which hit the pole flush, procuding that jarring CLASHANG.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Has Fox been doing that godawful heartbeat sound for all the series? I didn't notice it before tonight.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

and where is our buddy Al Leiter anyway?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I was at a gig, and then caught the last four innings in a bar (no sound though). My question: they've ditched the ticker at the top of the screen in favour of a graphic that shows up in the bottom right corner of the screeen *only when the pitch is thrown*. Why? What was wrong with the screen-top ticker? And if you're going to change things, why not show the game info between pitches, and leave the screen free of garbage when the pitch is on its way? This really annoyed me.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 24 October 2004 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, i will ask it again:

why exactly is Rolen hitting cleanup? lordy.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep expecting the announcers to go this full count brought to you by Allstate. Grounder to second by Michelin, throw to first and a McDonalds out number two of the inning. That brings up Johnny Damon, the First Federal hairy player of the day. He is a Playtex 1 for 3 tonight with a Hush Puppies walk, a Pepto Bismo run scored in the KFC 2nd inning.

Goddamn...

Earl Nash (earlnash), Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Better question, g! - what is Rolen doing swinging at THE FIRST PITCH with the bases loaded in the 8th inning?

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 24 October 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Cards gotta feel pretty good about staying as close as they did given that the middle of their lineup basically did squat.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 24 October 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Hopefully, though, they won't be the beneficiaries of 4 errors and 5 walks tonight.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 24 October 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

>I want to see the BoSox win so those "1918!" chants can turn into "2000!"

ok, unsympathetic yanks-fan melodrama time, you've been warned: shortly after the 2001 series, my family and i went down to st louis to see my grandparents. and my grandpa (who is now, thanks to alzheimer's and a crushing back operation, fading), weary, said: i hope the yankees never win a world series again. that instant (one of those undesignedly momentous utterances, the will of the multitude poignantly expressed by my father's father) has (for me) become a constricting knot in the celebrated body of yankee lore, and i've been waiting for the yankees to defy this yearned-for doom since. so though i know i stand completely alone in this (and a lot of it surely has to do w/ my arriving very late on the scene - the 2000 postseason), it's always felt to me like, in spite of it all, we have a lot against us, that there are no easy rides, that we're NOT a team of destiny, or at least not of a favorable one, and i think that separates me from those who lived the three-peat, or '98, or dimaggio-mantle, or '27, or '78, etc., etc., etc.

i don't think "2000" would work very well as a chant, though.

best part of game 1: manny's back-to-back errors, esp. the second one. i laughed, i screamed, i cried. god that was great! (i exclaimed at the time, i think). sad though it is to say, the highpoint of the postseason thus far, for me.

worst part of game 1: the rest of the game. i mean i guess it delivered, but before and after rolen's bases loaded popup, it never really felt like st louis had a chance.

oh, and thanks maura and you've got to pick up every stitch! (i'm not sure what threw you about the heavyweights part (though the boston bit is clunky as fuck but i didn't feel like honing it and i left it in there cuz i liked the cardinals bit (if i do say so myself)), but you just transfer the attibutes of the 'boxers' to those of the teams, or vice versa - most of it's pretty straightforward but for instance "steel torso" = superstrength in the middle, on both O and D, "killer 1-2" = manny-ortiz/schilling-pedro, "precarious d" = shaky rotation, "drunken o" = la russa's 'interesting' tactics when on the offensive (see womack's 2nd inning bunt or (hehe) marquis pinchrunning), etc)

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 24 October 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Womack's bunt was of his own stupidity.

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 24 October 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed! Giving a pitcher a free out after said pitcher lets the first two hitters of the inning reach base = there's a reason the Red Sox LET YOU GO, spunky.

I was at a gig, and then caught the last four innings in a bar (no sound though). My question: they've ditched the ticker at the top of the screen
Unless you live in Canada, ignore my post. The FOX feed is different from the one on Rogers Sportsnet, but during the rest of the playoffs they were the same.

Matt Morris
Jeff Suppan
Woody Williams

with Marquis filling in at long relief.

Buck and McCarver weren't ruling out the possibility of Marquis still starting Game 4, but I don't know if I'd trust them.

That's 2 in the bag!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 25 October 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea why Tony pulled Morris so early. He didn't look that bad and did he really think Cal "mop up duty" Eldred would be any better? Maybe he was planning on pinch hitting for him next inning? I also have no idea why he pitched Marquis... and still expect him to pitch game 4. The only other option would be Haren. Is it too late to pick up some starting pitching?

bnw (bnw), Monday, 25 October 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

This is an amazing stat:
Of the 354 pitches thrown by Cardinals pitchers in the first two games of the series, Red Sox hitters have swung and missed only 18 times, with 60 foul balls.
(for context, Boston hitters have outwalked St. Louis 14-8, and have struck out only 5 times to their 18)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 25 October 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Life is good.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 25 October 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be shocked if Marquis starts game 4. LaRussa seems to have it in for him, now relegating him to mop-up duties. I bet they start Haren instead. LaRussa's mad at Marquis for running through a stop sign at 1st in the Houston series and because he thinks he's tipping his pitches.

Otis Wheeler (Otis Wheeler), Monday, 25 October 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Did John Mabry go into the Witness Protection Program prior to the start of Game 1? This isn't to say there was much of a spot for him to do a damn thing last night (except to pinch-hit for Matheny in the 9th), but leaving him on the bench for Game 1 was inexplicable.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just jealous that Tim's hair color matches the veneer of my entertainment center. Granted, when TIM does stuff that other color guys do, it's going to be accentuated by the fact that TIM is doing it. And it'll be offered by TIM in the lugubrious, awkward, pseudo-erudite fashion that's made him the media darling he is today. Last night, for instance, he briefly (for about 3 minutes) held court on pitch counts - specifically, folks holding starters to strict pitch counts. After some verbal wrangling, he came to the conclusion that 100 pitches for Wiry Stringbean and 100 pitches for Barrel-Chested Manly Man can't be given the same weight, which I thought was common knowledge. I was under the impression that most major league teams are still coming around to using pitch counts as the barometer to measure a pitcher's fatigue, so for TIM to offer his thoughts on this non-issue struck me as a bit of unnecessarily silly bluster.

OK, to be totally honest, I lost track of his point 5 words in - that says more about me than him, clearly.

Tracer, two things:
1) Very nice write-up.
2) Get off of Pokey's jock & show Bellhawn some love dammit.

What was up with the co-Tom Hanks/Jimmy Fallon interview where Fallon gets about 45 seconds of airtime and Hanks gets 15 seconds? Hanks had this "are you serious?" look like he was in Big again. I hate em both, but still.

What a boring, boring game last night. Ugh.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I assumed it was because Fallon is from the area, and that the Drew Barrymore film he was flacking will flush his career. Can't you see Stephen King going on a bloody rampage if the Cards rebound?
He's lookin' very Kathy Bates in those shots.

How long have they been playing the Standells after a win? "Paranoid" for a visitors' pitching change is cute.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

TH,

Is that your real name? What a fantastic name!!!!

Morbs,

Why not flip Rolen/Edmonds? I always thought you should put speed before power anyway (ie, Edmonds could score easily from 1st on a Rolen double whereas in the reverse, it would be a lot closer of a play).

'gax!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The Sox don't have a LOOGy in their pen, do they?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 25 October 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

They have Mike Myers. He was used to make Garrett Anderson look silly in the ALDS, & he was semi-effective against the Yankees (I remember a key K of Matsui during Game 4?), but I don't know if he'll see any time this post-season unless the bullpen's getting run ragged - I forsee Timlin / Embree / Foulke every single game if the Sox are close or ahead.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 25 October 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Mabry would be the DH from game 1.

Cards pitchers (minus Carpenter) are not big on strikeouts. They've gotten outs all year by "letting the guys behind them make some plays" and "keeping the ball down". Marquis initially embraced this philosophy but seems to be rejecting it lately (either b/c he wants to strike some mofos out or b/c he simply can't keep his fastball or slider down) thus pissing off the Duncan-LaRussa monster.

Its so easy to second guess once you get dropped 0-2. Right now I wish we'd thrown Carpenter and Ankiel out there instead of Williams and Matty Slo Mo.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 25 October 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

'Gax -- I'm not getting the Rolen-Edmonds lineup flop theory, especially when Jim outslugged Scott by 45 points this year, and in a longer career trails him in steals 91-54. And also, IT DON'T MATTER! I think you're making a crisis out of 0-for-8 the way the Damon and Bellhorn worrywarts were in the first 3 games of the ALCS.

Re the Fox duo, just compare what you're getting from McCarver to Sutcliffe, Gwynn, Kruk, "HR" et al. And I'm not hearing any of the predicted Cardinal bias from him or Buck either.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 October 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim McCarver is Fox's answer to Beano Cook.

the apex of nadirs (Rock Hardy), Monday, 25 October 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's face it -- The Curse *and its possible demise* is The Hook for this Series employed by the entire national media, and the reason it's getting better-than-average attention from non-fans.

Good stuff from Joe Sheehan at Prospectus today, basically wondering if the Joe Morgans are paying attention: "The myth that postseason games are all close and low-scoring, won by the team that does the best job with productive outs, has persisted even after the last few years of barnburner after barnburner. The Sox are up 2-0 in games despite having made eight errors in the two contests, errors that could well have cost them both games if not for their bats on Saturday and some good pitching out of jams on Sunday. That's not small ball; that's big ball."

He also points out that last night's sloppiness can at least partly be attributed to weather that could reasonably have justified a postponement. (And apparently the St Louis midweek forecast ain't looking too hot.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 October 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

morbius i don't even need to tell you this is totally untrue.

also "pitching out of jams" = LUCK

John (jdahlem), Monday, 25 October 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What's untrue? That the media attributed the Red Sox' stretch run to "improved defense" when it was primarily powered by their hitting the shit outta the ball?

Pitching CONSISTENTLY out of jams, as in a superior bullpen bailing out mediocre starters, is not primarily luck.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The only really egregious error of the Series was Millar's throw.

Sox haven't done anything remotely as boneheaded as not covering a base in a run-down.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Arroyo's throw was even worse actually.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, so far, there's been:

- the Mueller / Varitek miscommunication in foul territory
- Mueller taking a bad hop & not getting control of the ball
- Mueller with a case of the clanks
- Bellhorn with a case of the clanks
- Manny forgetting to pick up the ball
- Manny's divot
- Millar's javelin to the 3rd base dugout
- Arroyo's yip into the 1st base dugout

What's left? Nixon dropping a fly ball? Damon airmailing a throw into Bennifer's seats? Cabrera short-hopping Big Papi? Varitek spontaneously combusting?

I'm surprised I haven't seen this brought up in one of the other rolling threads during the playoffs, but you're OTM, I like the angle much better too.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there a different angle that they usually show? The center field zoom camera has always been the angle I've seen since...forever.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

They usually show the straight-on from CF shot on replays (they just did it for Manny's swing and miss). The normal CF camera is slightly off center, so on close pitches it's tough to get a good sense of where the ball crossed the plate.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The higher angle shows more of a behind-the-pitcher view (slightly skewed to the third base side of the pitcher), while the other angle is lower and even further to the third base side. I find the former angle to be very pleasing to watch -- the distance to the plate seems longer, and as I said before you can see where the ball crosses the plate better.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

man, between the shot of Tkachuk and those crazy Canuck accents on the Walker clan I'm bummed about hockey.

Anyway, the Cardinales lack of starting pitching is finally catching up with them. They just have no stopper, no guy they can count on to get 'em back on track. They really needed Woody to get game one for them. Oh well.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF is McCarver talking about? Try to take third and get thrown out (to make it two out in the inning) for what?

I kind of agree with him on that one. His point was with the 3-0 lead, a speedy runner on base and the outfield in bad condition, it would be worth the risk to run. Astros had almost the exact situation in Game 7 with Beltran on second. With the ball hit to nearly the same spot, Beltran ran. Edmonds made a good throw, but the runner screened Rolen a bit and the ball rolled into the dugout, giving the Astros a run.

The Red Sox ended up getting that run anyway on a hit later in the inning, so it was a moot point in this case.

Boston is just the fifth team not to trail in the first three games of the World Series. The only teams to do it were the 1963 Los Angeles Dodgers, 1966 Baltimore Orioles, 1976 Cincinnati Reds and 1989 Oakland Athletics -- all went on to sweeps.

This may be the ultimate blow to the secret egotism camouflaged by all the poor-me moaning of the Red Sox fan - we finally win it but no one cares.

This really hasn't been baseball played to its highest level. There have been a few innings of really taut ball (the first inning of game 2, for instance) but that's it.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought the Sox played incredibly well tonight. The Cardinals certainly helped Pedro out of a jam or two, but the biggest difference is everyone on the sox is hitting right now. Is there a lineup in the National League that compares? I really don't know.
This postseason has certainly had enough drama already to avoid being a dud.

It is amazing watching the Sox bats come alive. Everybody contributing. It makes me wish they had more games to play (aargh I know but still, I really do!) One more win. It is astonishing how much we are stomping all over the oppo at this point, we're just having our way with them. We can even fuck up and it's okay ?!!!?

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It was astonishing to hear, from many quarters, that the Sox won despite Pedro not being "at his best." What, because he threw a lot of balls early? Three hits. Shutout. Shut up.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, yeah, Tracer, that's exactly why. The Cards should've scored at least one run off of Pedro - it's questionable whether the first inning would've garnered any scoreboard love (given how Pedro manhandled Reggie Sanders), but Suppan should've been on home plate eating a ham sandwich by the time Ortiz took his foot off the first base bag. But, of course, as is Pedro's wont of late, he uses the first time through the line-up to loosen his arm & gague his stuff, and then starts pitching from then on.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

How many 4-game losing streaks did the Cards have this year?

I'd kinda like St Loo to take the next 2 so the Nation can raze Fenway when they win Saturday -- but not if the Schill can pitch. I can't listen to "the Lord is my trainer" one more time. Billy Mueller was going all fundie in his interviews too.

The St Louis background organ music in the intros nearly drove me to violence ... an old Budweiser jingle.

Hell Freezes Over: listened to ESPN Radio for a couple innings and heard Morgan complain about a small sample size! (in ref to swinging strikes by the Sox I think) He was silent on Boston's need to "manufacture runs" too.

Bevare: full moon around 10 pm Central tonight.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Boston's runs come red-e-bilt in an Ortiz-sized package delivered thru your fuckin window. SHAZAM. Sutcliffe and Joe Morgan can see if run-manufacturing keeps them warm over the winter. Boston's moved to a service economy.. "St. Louis McCardinals - NINE MEN SURVD"

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm really not hung up about having a "good" World Series. I'm too emotionally invested in Boston winning to care about how they do it. If I was less of a fan, I'd probably want better ballgames. As it is, the Yankees series provided enough drama to last me a long time. I don't know if I could handle a 7-game series (especially at this point, since it would mean sitting through 3 losses in a row, and all the raging insecurity of the Red Sox fan would come roaring back). I just want 'em to win. Tonight, tomorrow, whenever, but the sooner the better.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

that whole "Who the Red Sox should win it for" thing got me. Im posting mine.

The Red Sox should win it for my grandfather who died when I was twelve and was the man who bought me my first baseball glove and my first Red Sox hat. He died in 1986 one week into the dreaded 86 season. I know he's looking down today with a great big smile on his face. The weird thing is my grandmother always said to me "when you see a bluejay outside your window thats your grandfather looking in on you". Well, for the past week theres been a bluejay landing on my porch on regular intervals....

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

That "win it for..." part got me thinking that it's probably for the best that the Cubs and Sox didn't meet in the series last year.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The New York Times sports section today has a super anti-Boston bug up their ass - one article about Francona's mishandling of / kowtowing to Pedro, one article about the Red Sox's defensive deficiencies in the first 2 games (and starting David Ortiz @ first base) (DID YOU KNOW he made a pivotal error against THE YANKEES this year?), and William C. Rhoden praising the Cardinal's fan base at the expense of the Red Sox Nation's post-ALCS shenanigans (& the cop-related death of a fan).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Not to say Rhoden's off-base in drawing the parallel, but at the same time, step away from the holier-than-thou pulpit when you start spouting vitriol about the thuggish tendencies of a small cross-section of Red Sox (& Yankee) fans.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Will we see a drastically re-arranged Cards lineup tonight? The problem is that so many guys are cold right now, so there's aren't a lot of decent-looking alternatives. They should move Walker to Rolen's spot, at least. Maybe drop Rolen to fifth and bump Womack or Sanders to second (not great choices for the #2 hitter, but who else is there)?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

If it's Rolen's calf that's impairing him that much, why not bench him altogether? C'mon Gax, 3 BLOODY GAMES, and the guy homered vs the Astros. He's either gonna turn it around, or not. You sound like a WFAN caller before the 2000 Series begging for Todd Pratt to start over Piazza...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I would think that the time to move Rolen (to 6th? 5th?) would've been @ the beginning of the series, @ the same time that Renteria & Womack did the switcheroo.

THE POOPCHUTES OPTIMIZED CARDINAL DESPERATION LINEUP:

- Renteria (SS)
- Mabry (LF)
- Pujols (1B)
- Walker (RF)
- Rolen (3B)
- Edmonds (CF)
- Whoa-mack or a RenteriaBot (2B)
- anyone besides Matheny (or Ausmus) (C)
- Belly Itcher (P)

Am I wrong? Sure I am! Could this be worse than what the Cardinals are currently fielding? I doubt it. Both Rolen AND Sanders have been hitless in the WS to this point, and Edmonds has one single in 12 ABs.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Who the Red Sox should win it for"

Being a Cubs fan and remembering how he played in Chicago, I'd like to see Boston win it all for Bill Buckner.

Don't get me wrong, the Sox winning it all this year won't change what happened in 86, but at least Buckner is not going to have to live with quite as much guilt as before. He will just be another World Series goat, instead of a complete pariah.

Bob Stanley, Calvin Schiraldi and especially John McNamara (both for pinchhitting for Clemens and leaving Buckner in the game) have just as much blame for them blowing game six as Buckner, but they get off the hook (probably outside of Boston and people who saw the game) because they don't have the replay playing over and over.

Letterman had the best joke about Buckner something like he tried to commit suicide after the game and threw himself in front of a bus, but luckilly it went underneath his legs.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

So I was chuckling the other night because many people have made a big to-do about Reggie Sanders being a postseason veteran having played in the 3 of the last 4 world series.

Here is his World Series line:
.226/.305/.358

and here is his career postseason line:
.188/.276/.298

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Sportscentre (on TSN in Canada) said that Buckner had been asked about the series, and said he honestly had no interest or the slightest care about who won and just wanted to be left alone.

I remember reading an article about Buckner a couple of years ago (I wish I could could remember where) which talked about how he needed to move to a buttfuck nowhere town where nobody knew who he was or what he did because nobody would let him forget it and it was ruining his life (and his family's life). Now he's happy living in a small town, keeping a low profile and just being an ordinary guy. He has no interest in baseball anymore. It made me both happy and sad for the guy -- happy that he's found peace and quiet, sad that he's so jaded about the game he loved and had a long and quite successful career in.

It's also sad how he's the scapegoat while three or four other guys who are equally culpable for losing that game have gotten away scot free. But that's sports -- sports fans love and need their scapegoats *coughstevebartmancough*.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

That's funny, I could have sworn that he was doing the Sports Collectables circuit doing signings... or at least that he had.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

How many of the 3 games would the Cards have WON with Rolen hitting 5th? Get me?

Since I know Buckner and Mookie Wilson have signed things together in the past, sounds like BB is having ambivalence about his infamy similar to Anthony Perkins' about being Norman Bates (only growing less accepting instead of more).

Sheehan of BP on the mortifying "Leon" chat:

"My inbox lit up after that 'interview,' and I can't even describe to you the level of astonishment and disgust. Just so I'm clear...MLB doesn't want to show celebrations with alcohol in clubhouses, but is OK with its broadcast partner conducting interviews with fake people who are used to sell beer IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INNING?"

A 90-second IN-GAME interview is not a "sighting." Hell, I don't think we need to hear from the managers during the game (maybe cuz they haven't said anything useful so far). My reaction: I flipped the channel for however many pitches that shit took.

And the Busches haven't owned the Cards for years, oui?

Morbius it is much worse for Bill Buckner that it is for any actor playing a bad guy. Soap villains complain about people actually hating them on the street, yelling things. At least they have the comfort of knnowing that it's all a mistake. Buckner was a hitting coach for one of the Southern League teams for awhile, and when they came to play the Smokies (who were then the Knoxville Blue Jays, and the Knoxville White Sox before that, and the Smokies again even before that) people were razzing him. Just on some random minor league night in Tennessee. (I was not one of the razzers, nor anyone I knew.) Before any of that had happened I heard that Mike Stanley's family couldn't even come to the games anymore because of the booing, it just bummed them out too much. And him, I imagine.

I always felt that the fault in the Cubs losing it in Game 6 rested right on Moises Alou, because he was the one who made a huge deal out of it and started having a hissy fit in left field, and that might have thrown Prior off a lot. If Moises just calmly walked away from the left field line, that game ends a lot differently I'm guessing.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 28 October 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm watching the Lunar Eclipse right now!! Almost there in Chicago ... probably 10 minutes to go...

It's pretty fuckin' awesome ... they said earlier today we might not be able to see it due to cloud cover, but the sky is clear right now. Pretty cool. Better than this boring-ass game anyway. Watching Marquis fall behind every batter is just Chinese water torture.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 28 October 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 28 October 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think you understand what being a Red Sox fan actually feels like. They can be ahead 15-0 with 2 outs in the 9th, and I'll still be nervous. That's why I can't sympathize with the "lack of drama" complaints. Objectively, I know it's true. Subjectively, I'm holding my breath on every pitch.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 28 October 2004 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

If "within themselves" = "pathetically inept from an offensive standpoint," I'm right with ya.

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 28 October 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The Sox have pitched well, no slight intended, but the core of the St. Louis bashers has really not shown us anything.

This is gonna be my least favorite (or, more accurately, my most boring) WS since the '99 Yanks sweep of the Braves. At least the Mets drew blood one game in '00.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 28 October 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha Sutcliffe and (the other guy??? he's alright, miles beyond Sut) read a letter on the air from the UK pleading with them to do the between-innings banter as well, so that we wouldn't haev to listen to the two goons back in the Channel Five studio

for some reason it never occurred to me until now that Yankee fans hate to see the Red Sox win (almost?) as much as the reverse

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Thursday, 28 October 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i do but that's not it. more than anything i felt this deserved to be a tremendous, truly epic series. i wanted 7 games. i wanted extra innings. and yeah, i wanted to sox to lose. but that's not it.

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 28 October 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

complete team meltdown by the Cards. Pitching AND hitting. Putrid.

I wonder about Morbs unanswered Q up there: Have the Cards lost 4 straight this year? I hafta believe NO but I'm too lazy to look it up. MAYBE they lost 4 in a row last year.

Terrible series which puts a damper on the wonderful League Championship Series. Such that, overall, this year's playoffs can't hold a CANDLE to last year's unbelievable tournament -- one of the best ever.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cards lost 4 in a row to the Astros the last week of the season, and that was it.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, right -- forgot about that. Well, they were just trying to screw the Cubs so that doesn't really count.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I say that the combined dramatics of last year's NLCS and ALCS still fall shy of this year's ALCS. Last year's world series was boring

and please ignore the last sentence of the first post on this thread thx

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

it's better that it doesn't detract from the drama of the AL pennant. this finale, IF IT HOLDS UP, would ensure that this will always be the year that "boston beat new york and went on to win the world series (against (insert padres here))" (sorry pads and cards fans)

>this finale, IF IT HOLDS UP, would ensure that this will always be the year that "boston beat new york and went on to win the world series

yabut it's not about the sox GOING TO the WS, it's about them WINNING it, yeah beating NYY is huge huge mongous and maybe even the story above the Story but it has happened before and it would've been an integral part of the narrative no matter what happened in the world series, w/out monstrously overshadowing THEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVENT as by all rights it should not (and as you say, it will)(is that really what sox fans want, i dunno maybe it is)

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard some Yankees fans today commiserating and claiming that teams that beat the Yankees in the playoffs always go on to sweep the Series. I don't know if this is true, but I guess it fits in with the Yankee world view that "If you can beat us, you can cream anybody else."

I'll have to paraphrase - essentially, he said this was for the former goats of the franchise (Johnny Pesky, Bob Stanley, Calvin Schiraldi, Buckner) and that he's proud to be on the best team in Boston Red Sox history. Something like that. How he said it & the way he said it was perfect.

Omigod, that MLB allowed one of its most historic moments of this generation to double as a location for a Jimmy Fallon vehicle ... Beelzebud, worst whore ever. But the biggest surprise is that it's an adaptation of Nick Hornby's soccer-themed FEVER PITCH, and it's a Farrellys movie:

http://imdb.com/title/tt0332047/

They sure lucked out, I bet the script didn't originally end this way.

Worst Yankee fans = Ruth Curse Veterans for Truth

The '99 Yanks sweep of the Braves.... man, I hated both those teams so much I tuned out after Game 1.

Now Wrigleyville has the itchiest hairshirts.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait a second - was that super-sweet Jimmy Fallon moment a thing for the MOVIE?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I am going to walk around giving people the Manny Ramirez full-arm-extension double-pistol-point all day

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Morbius! At least maybe now we'll get to see some of those games filmed in super-sweet THIRTY FIVE MIL action, NFL-films style!

xpost:: Nate, I'm double pistol-pointing right back atcha. SHAZAM.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless Drew has tossed out her Stroke in favor of Fallon --who would? -- the confluence of events would suggest it was a movie shot. (Fallon plays a Bosox obsessive, they shot at regular-season games too.) Why else were they the only mindless celebs I saw on the field?

And what WAS the Yadier-Manny hen party about?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard Molina thought Manny was peaking at the pitch signs.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, man - I didn't notice it was DREW. Fuck, and I thought it was so sweet that Fallon managed to get on the field & make out with his wicked hawt girlfriend. Fuck a Hollywood.

I think the Yadier / Manny nonsense had something to do w/ supposed strike-zone squeezing by the umpire in favor of the Sox. Or maybe they were just trading hair tips. That was definitely strange, thought.

xpost - ahhhhh, that makes sense. But whatEVer.

If anyone wants to do the head/hair rub w/ me, gimme a buzz.

The always quotable Curt Schilling on Alex Rodriguez:

Curt Schilling says what he thinks, and what he said to sports talk radio listeners in Boston on Wednesday afternoon is that the Red Sox would not have been in the World Series if Alex Rodriguez was on the team.

"The biggest move, when all was said and done, was the non-move. I think if we get A-Rod, we don't get here [to the World Series]. I don't question that for a second," Schilling said on WEEI's "The Big Show."

As recounted in the Boston Globe, Schilling continued, "He's a Hall of Famer, sure. But after getting to know people who, A, play with him and, B, have played with him, I don't think it would have worked here. I think this clubhouse would have been a much different place, and I don't think it would have been better, given the personalities involved."

The proposed trade with the Rangers to obtain Rodriguez would have sent Manny Ramirez to Texas. Ramirez stayed in Boston and was named World Series MVP"

Alex, I heretofore was not aware of his reputation as "Red Light Curt" 'til this past week, but it was his glowing Lord-inspired press comments that started to raise my hackles.

Schilling backs out of stumping for Bush. Is Kerry/Sox connection behind it?
John Depetro WRKO 680 AM Boston | Today | Brainhose

It is learned that Curt Schilling will not be stumping with the Prez today citing that he needs approval from his doctor before he can travel.
But lo' and behold he was at Disney World yesterday.
Seeing as the Majority of owners are HUGE Kerry supporters, (including Katie Cowlicks now ex-hubby) Is it possible that the Redsox Brass got to Curt?? He now states that it was wrong for him to say that on GMA. I'm guessing that his doctors note will suddenly appear in time for the "Parade" in Boston Saturday.

Yes. The demoCREEPs bullied and intimidated Curt Schilling into, essentially, recanting his endorsement. That's what the demoSCUMBAGs do.

If I were Curt Schilling, I would have told them to F' OFF! There is no clause in his contract that removes his freedom of speech.

Besides, Curt Schilling could sign with any team in MLB, so who cares what some mealy-mouthed liberal douche bag like John Henry thinks or says?

'More than a dozen current and former owners and family members are among the president's top re-election fundraisers, an Associated Press review found. Seven are Bush "Rangers," each raising at least $200,000, and six are "Pioneers" who have brought in $100,000 or more.'

Red Sox first baseman Kevin Millar, joking around on FSN's "Best Damn Sports Show Period," said the team drank shots of Jack Daniels and Crown Royal to keep warm before Game 6 of the American League championship series against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Millar said that since they won that game, they continued taking shots before every game as they swept to their World Series victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

"I'm glad we won in four games," Millar said, "because those Crown Royal shots and Jack Daniels shots started to kill me."

Apropos of nothing:

"Everyone has their own preferences. Some people like skinny women, I like fat women. Some people like young women, I like old women. Some people like poor women, I like rich women. Some people like clean caps, I like dirty caps." --Julian Tavarez
