gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

I would like to officially register my interest.

I think triples and all the fielding categories possible would be the best way to go!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

This will be my 3rd (!!!) season as Commissioner. One change I would like to propose would be the addition of one more disabled list position, ideally one spot for a position player and one spot for a pitcher... but I'm not sure if that option is available.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

Consider my interest registered.

I haven't done fantasy baseball in years (and never on ILB). Please don't haze the rookie!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to beat you all, except for a couple of you.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

Can we include sacrifice bunts?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm in, but I won a rotisserie league last year so I'm guaranteed to finish dead last. I'll draft Barry Bonds and watch him get arrested that night.

What about stat-geek heavy categories, if Yahoo has them for their cheap leagues? I can't convince any of the old people in my local rotisserie leagues to give them a try, but this crowd seems more hip. (daddy-o)

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

Outfield assists - fuck yeah!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Count me in! Last year was a bummer - my modem died halfway through last season, which is why my team was neglected. I also couldn't get into the draft. This year will be different, as I have a new laptop & high-speed connection, so I'll have more time to devote to it. -KK

Yr3k (dymaxia), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

FIELDING PERCENTAGE SUCKS FREEZE POPS, AS DO MOST FIELDING STATS

That said, I'm probably not going to participate this year. Also, you knew I was going to say that anyway.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

About the fielding percentage, that is.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

yes, outfield assists. i am in. maybe k digging chick too.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha- fistpumps! I would seriously love a league based on the most arbitrary/ridiculous stats possible.

FANTASY NEWS
Names, league marks will be sublicensed

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Darren Rovell
ESPN.com

Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association awarded exclusive rights to the league's fantasy games to Major League Baseball Advanced Media, the league-owned arm that controls MLB.com, for the next five years.

The deal, valued by the league at more than $50 million, would not result in MLB.com being the sole holder of fantasy rights in the future, according to Bob Bowman, chief executive of MLB Advanced Media. The organization, he said, will sublicense the league marks and players names to other organizations, as the MLBPA has done in the past.

Bowman said it was too early to tell if fantasy fees for games on MLB.com will increase as a result of the deal.

"Our goal is to increase the number of people who can play fantasy, increase the number of games that we consider fantasy and just get more people spending time on fantasy than we currently have," Bowman said. "That could be more licensees. It could be fewer licensees. It's really going to depend on what the potential licensees want to do in terms of trying to augment and enhance what is already a great product."

Bowman said he was seeking proposals from the organizations that previously have held fantasy rights with the MLBPA.

"If they are going to license fantasy games to those that had the license before this deal was struck, it will be business as usual and the industry will continue to grow," said Greg Ambrosius, president of the Fantasy Sports Trade Association (FSTA), which is made up of 182 companies who work in the industry. "If only a couple companies are involved, they will stymie the business."

How much an interested company is willing to pay could be dependent on the legal foundation concerning the rights of companies to use the players' names without the license.

Judy Heeter, director of business affairs and licensing for the MLBPA, said these rights belong to the union.

"Publicity rights of the players have been recognized as belonging to the Players Association for something over 40 years in a whole series of reported decisions and anything, including statistics that makes those players personalities recognizable or identifiable to the public, is legally protected," Heeter said.

But those in the industry maintain that this is a huge gray area. Using stats for fantasy purposes could constitute First Amendment rights that are no different from a boxscore in a newspaper.

One court case, NBA v. Motorola and STATS Inc., backs up this opinion. In 1997, a U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that the federal copyright statute prohibits the ownership of factual data. There has been no rulings to the contrary over the past eight years, said Paul Levy, who was co-counsel to STATS Inc. in the case.

"There are a line of cases that suggest that any personality is protected from an implied endorsement or suggested affiliation without their permission," Levy said. "But that is different from the recitation of a statistic that has no meaning unless that statistic is tied to the name of the player who generated that statistic."

The fantasy rights that MLB Advanced Media awards to licensees will not include the rights to San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds, who could break the all-time home run record this upcoming year. MLB.com is the only licensed fantasy product that has included Bonds' name and that will continue to be the case going forward, according to Bonds' marketing agent Jeff Bernstein.

According to FSTA estimates, more than 15 million Americans play fantasy sports. Baseball has the highest cost per consumer. In 2003, the average player of fantasy baseball games spent $179 to participate compared to the $161 that players spent on fantasy football games and the $118 spent on fantasy basketball games.

Fantasy baseball is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month. The concept was born in January 1980 when a group of media members convened at a restaurant in Manhattan called La Rotisserie Francaise. It was for this reason that the fantasy game was originally called "rotisserie."

"I'm staggered how big this industry has become," said Steve Wulf, executive editor of ESPN The Magazine, who joined the league in the second year when he was writing for Sports Illustrated. "The seminal moment came in 1982, when I was at Shea Stadium. This big shadow approached from behind me and asked me how my rotisserie team was doing. It was (Atlanta Braves outfielder) Dale Murphy. He said he read the book I wrote about it."

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

i'm in again, unless it gets way too crowded and people who really want in get pissed off. i kinda sucked last year, but i blame a lot of that on several factors:
1. it was my first time playing rotisserie
2. i couldn't make the draft, as i was on a plane to denmark
3. richie sexson
4. a lot of you guys are pretty on-the-ball about picking up waivers and free agents

i actually won my other league, based on straight point accumulation. so i guess it evens out. (i won mostly cause' i got mad hits [like rod carew], thanks to guys like ichiro, juan pierre, melvin mora and miggie tejada). also, it didn't hurt that my on-the-ball-ness was helped by copping moves from the especially attentative on ilb.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 20 January 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

Hey Thermo, I'm on to your trick, you'd better not enter two teams
Ha ha! No, MIR, I wasn't planning on it. But you shouldn't be giving me ideas!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 20 January 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

sorry leglo, i added you to the list.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 20 January 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Actually, why don't you count me in for sure? I don't want to be a pussy about it again -- I kinda regret not doing it last year.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

I have signed k-red to my coaching staff. The contract includes designating several roster spots for mediocre middle relivers deemed HOTTT and/or Cubbies.

Also there have been whispers about how the commish is going to enforce the new drug testing policies.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

We have smart folk here - it shouldn't be a problem to put together a formula that'll calculate a fair player-balance ratio based on A) a hitter's / pitcher's previous performance, B) current performance, C) weight gained over the offseason, and D) hat size.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

if you mean "hat" size, dave, i'm way ahead of you

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

We have to get Doc Morbius involved to have a team, so he can check his SABR theories in our fantasy league. Besides that being a NY Met fan he could come up with a funny team name dealing with Pedro and Anna Benson.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 20 January 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

SABR modes of thought don't mean fantasy dookie in light of employing stats like BA & THE ACURSED FIELDING PERCENTAGE.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

haha, as commissioner, i've always welcomed a blend of traditional and SABR-friendly stats. in my other league last year, we even had HBP (+ for hitters/- for pitchers).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

how about an "excellent name" bonus, with a "boring name" penalty? these are categories everyone could get behind. it'd also make draft day more fun!

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

morbs won't do it. i've tried convincing him to fantasy freeball it before, and he wouldn't have it. "following the mets is stressful enough," sez he.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

though i would consent to letting him field the mets as his fantasy team. i doubt ANYONE would object to that!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

and also if morbs joined i would agree to cede up my longtime fantasy team name to him: my bobby valentine

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

I have NEVER understood the rotisserie phenomenon. I'd rather allocate my baseball-related leisure to reality.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh Morbsies...

You really are something else. I want to go to a Mets game on my next NYC trip, I will look you up.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 21 January 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Dude, if you do, look me up, too - I'll totally hop on MetroNorth & meet y'all @ Shea!

Team Name #3: The Anna Benson Experience T-Shirts

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Super, maybe hstencil & Jams could be the Met-hatin' contingent.

Actually, I DO understand the rotisserie phenomenon, and shun it accordingly!

John (jdahlem), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm really hoping for a buttload of teams so the bottom half of the draft determines who snoozes and who gets a great team but still won't finish in first because of FIELDING PERCENTAGE.

OK, I'm done.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Hi, my proposed defensive stats:

fielding %
zone rating
range factor

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

i'll add an "intangibles" and i'm down.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

another experimental category being bandied about on the boards is named "Jeter"... No word yet as to what exactly it means.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

gygax!, please don't take my caps-lock bitchery as anything more than good-natured goofin'. I don't doubt that you do, but I just want to make sure. (That said, Melvin Mora sure ain't getting a Valentine's Day card from me.)

SABR should gather a group of respected (& smart!) psychologists to try & discover some calculable way to measure "intangibles" - you know, develop stats like "leadership ability index" and "clubhouse cancer quotient" and "happy fun time %age" and "dress code variance".

"Jeter" = "fist-pump / cooler-tip ratio"!!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Jeter Factor = (# of fist pumps + # of public criticisms from the team owner + avg number of times Joe Buck mentions your name during TV broadcasts per 9 innings) / Range Factor

Jeter's JF last year was 794.3. His reputation as a fielder increased (leading to more fistpumps -- and fistfucks from TV commentators) despite a decrease in range factor. Quite the combination there, but Jeter did it.

Most AL shorstops have JF's between 0.1 and 2, mainly due to the relative scarcity of their fist pumping.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

xpost

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

jeter (as used in the modern english maccarver & buck dictionary) is synonymous w/ awesome.

as a stat are you askin? i guess that would be one's awesomeness quotient.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

i like jeter, ok, but i guess the bashing is mostly tolerable and probably sort of deserved. i do kinda hate gleeman though.

btw jeter had like pretty much his best fielding year ever by any non-complete shit metric.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

actually now that i check his rf was his highest ever anyway, what are you talking about

John (jdahlem), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

yes, we need Jeterface ratings. a-rod has increased his exponentially since sporting the stripes.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

actually now that i check his rf was his highest ever anyway
Hey, you're right, I didn't even bother to check. For some reason I thought his RF had been yo-yo'ing over the years.

So it probably was his best fielding year ever. Maybe next year he'll be one of the top six fielding shortstops in the AL!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 21 January 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

He's a shoe-in for the top 13!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Super, maybe hstencil & Jams could be the Met-hatin' contingent.

but Morbs, I bought a Mets hat and a Matsui fridge magnet! and I'm actually excited about 2005.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

If someone could just replace the Mets TV broadcast team w/ a Speak & Spell, a looped copy of the Heaven's Gate tape, and a Teddy Ruxpin playing Chant, I would be even more excited about the Mets!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 21 January 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
oi, commish!

where do things stand at the moment?

thanks.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 7 February 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

I believe February 17th will be the first day to register leagues.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

i would really like to be in this year but i will be without a computer except at work for at least a month. i may have access before opening day but there's an equal chance i may not. as i said, i would really like to participate once again (if for no other reason than to take derek lowe and watch him firebomb my pitching stats for the 4th straight year) but i think it would be unfair to take a spot of someone who may be more participatory.

if you wind up with only 19 interested parties i will surely take that last spot and do what i can from work until i'm back on line, otherwise i wish ilbfbb a great season.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

As of right now, yeah. Definitely send me a line if you come up.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

i'll let you know, if i have the cake i'm going to try to score some tix to the cubs/bosox series at wrigley but it's going to be such a hot ticket i seriously doubt i'll be able to get one. i've been lax in checking the chisox schedule to see when the dark hose come to town, last year circumstances conspired against me and i wound up not seeing a red sox game live and in person for the first time since the 1977 season. i must atone.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 11 February 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

Registration for the 2005 season will begin shortly after midnight (ET) on Thursday, February 17.

expect a full league sometime on the morning of the 18th... can we get a good day of the week/time for draft slots? draft usually takes about 90 minutes.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

March 20th then?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Okay here are some changes:

Trade Reviewer Details
You must choose from amongst the options below to determine how your league will handle the reviewing of all pending trades between teams.

League Votes
When you select the League Votes option, accepted trades can be overturned by a vote of at least 1/3 of the members of your league. All league member votes, including the one cast by the commissioner, count equally. Even if no protests are made, the trade will not be processed until the time allotted to protest pending trades in your league has elapsed.

Commissioner
When you select the Commissioner option, accepted trades can only be overturned by the league commissioner.

Yahoo! Sports
When you select the Yahoo! Sports option, all league managers have the opportunity to lodge a protest against a given trade with the Fantasy Baseball PLUS League Office. All protests will be reviewed by the Yahoo! Sports staff and a final decision will be rendered within 48 hours. All decisions on trade protests are final, and no approved trade will ever be reversed. Additionally, the League Office will never re-examine and approve a previously vetoed trade.

I am leaning towards League Votes (status quo).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Another change is changing the all-encompassing 3 OF slots to individual OF positions (CF, LF, RF)... what do you guys think?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

i am lean towards the status quo on both counts.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

no to individual of positions. that'll make things much more difficult.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Well, I got to the end of the sign-up...

The league costs $125.00 ($6.25/20, $8.33/15, $12.50/10)

which opens another huge can of worms... Do you want to stay with Yahoo! or are there any other free leagues available?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

I thought the Yahoo site worked pretty well.

The only thing that threw me off was the maximum amount of innings, as I ran out of innings with a month to go. If this is optional, I would vote to get rid of this part of the setup.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

I would definitely vote AGAINST removing the Innings Pitched limit - part of managing your team is managing games played & innings pitched (in a roto league - different situation in head-to-head leagues, natch). Otherwise, the person that wins is most likely the person that just goes and accumulates counting stats all willy-nilly. As far as pitching goes, w/out inning limits, stats like Ks and Ws can be won by just picking up pitchers left & right near the end of the season and just accumulating bulk, and that's hogwash. Don't blame the system because you decided to pitch 10 starters every week for 4 months, Earl.

Speaking OF limits, though - I think, w/ Games Played & Innings Pitched limits in place (which I like), I'm not sure that there's a need for the Moves Made limit as well. Those game-related limits are, in essence, caps that would prohibit trying to play the waiver wire like a geetar - having only 162 games per position, for instance, diminishes the validity of kooky shenanigans like, for instance, getting fly-by-night stats from guys visiting Coors Field. Also, if someone's wickedly snakebit by injuries, having the Moves Made caps puts them @ a disadvantage, as they might have to waste moves just trying to bandage their team while other teams have these moves in their pocket just because of sheer luck. If someone wants to gut their team by fishing in the waiver wire every single day, so be it - I can't remember playing in a fantasy league where that type of manager finished better than middle-of-the-pack.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

If someone wants to gut their team by fishing in the waiver wire every single day, so be it - I can't remember playing in a fantasy league where that type of manager finished better than middle-of-the-pack.

And I (equally guilty) was hot on his tails (about 10 places back)!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

So this isn't free with yahoo any more?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

But how many moves did he make? & were these moves fueled by injury problems, or his itchy mouse finger? Also, please to submit a spreadsheet detailing A) who he picked up, B) their contribution to his team, C) their contribution vs. the contribution of who they replaced, D) their contribution vs. the average contribution of someone from that position, E) whether he ate tacos or sushi the day of these transactions.

[xpost] - yeah, I meant to ask that, too! Is Yahoo! totally pay now? If they are, I really hope they upgraded their Stattracker app.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

So this isn't free with yahoo any more?

It is no longer free. If you want to register a league it will cost $125. If you want to register your own team and join a public league it will cost $25.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

THAT BLOWS.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that does suck, UNLESS (like I said) they offer something better than what they've done in the past - I'm guessing they didn't offer a "virtual tour" touting "all we've done to justify making a play at your fun money" when you were registering the league, G?

FWIW, I'm fine w/ dropping $10-$15 for a chance to SCHOOL YOU ALL BWAH HAH HAH.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i'll certainly pay. but how much is espn or cbs instead of yahoo? i know both of those leagues have better interfaces...

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

I'd like ideally a free league, but I have paypal if there's no chance of a free league and we have enough interested parties remaining.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

yeah I'd send ya $10 or $20 or whatever, sure, why the hell not. as long as you don't spend it on cheap rotgut. (actually, change "as long as" to "especially if")

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

If 19 other people are in, I suppose I can spare $6.25 to show you the MUELLER MAGIC.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha! Knee injury magic!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 17 February 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

And despite the schooling I received last year I wouldn't mind paying a little.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 17 February 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

I can't remember what the innings number exactly was, but it was seemed to be less than 9 innings x 162 games. It probably was just the last two weeks of the season as I was in second when my staff locked up and then I ended up in third place. I didn't really use that many starters, but these four made most of their starts last year: Zito, Pavano, Glavine, and Maddux. I also finished WAY in the bottom for giving up dingers, so there are a couple of stats that balence out having a full starting staff. I'll go with the flow, as I've definitely got to get some closers not named Hawkins this year!

I don't mind paying to be in the league, I enjoyed it last year.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 17 February 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

162 * 9 = 1448

League limit was 1250, I think. That is an interesting point, actually. YO COMMISH!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

we addressed it last year. because we don't carry a full 25 man team roster the 86% of total MLB season innings pitched works well (not to mention less away losses w/ only 8 innings pitches ~ 1400 IP).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

i'd drop the 6.25, fwiw.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Ah, gotcha. I don't remember hearing that explanation, but it makes sense. THANKS COMMISH!!!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

That's a drop in the bucket - I don't mind paying it. Although, it would be nice if they had the live updating and whatever else they gave you last year if you paid. I doubt that, though.

Yr3k (dymaxia), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

Unless they think we're dopey enough to pay for the pleasure of their forgetfulness re: adding new players to the waiver wire, there'd best be live stats included!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

oh hell yes, if we're gonna pay, I'd certainly better get to know my place in the standings PITCH-BY-PITCH.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 17 February 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Unless they think we're dopey enough to pay for the pleasure of their forgetfulness re: adding new players to the waiver wire

*which also counts for new positions as well.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

if you rearrange the letters of "some0ne", it comes up "rap0sa" -- OH DUDE THAT IS FREAKY

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Hey, now - I only plan to flake out when it comes to ignoring your trade offers, OS!! *winky-kins*

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

if you ever say *winky-kins* again I shall have to beat you with Felipe Alou's adult undergarments

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Then I will be forced to fnap you w/ Don Zimmer's jock, and then we'll both stink of Ben Gay & Prep H, and that will totally FUBAR our chance w/ the longball-diggin' chixors!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

OH IT'S ON NOW

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

STOP IT! DON'T YOU SEE WHAT GYGAX IS DOING? HE'S TURNING US AGAINST OURSELVES!!!11

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

This is just part of his master plan to keep us distracted so we won't notice he drafted Pedro Feliz in the 2nd round.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

i might be doing two drafts simultaneously!! my other league's draft is either on the 19th or 20th. i will make it work, though.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

haha Jeff Cirillo's coming to Brewers' camp!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Is he bringing Coors Field or a time machine?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

he's bringing your mother

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

OH NO YOU DIDN'T!

(Why didn't she tell me?!?!)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

we might have to have a !!!en-fight!

bnw (bnw), Friday, 25 February 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Aw man, I didn't even notice, bnw!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 25 February 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Also, it's looking 99% sure that I won't be able to participate in the draft. So I'm gonna autopick that shit. Which is actually not a bad idea, since I don't know what I'm doing anyway!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 25 February 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

last year i had to autopick, because i was in denmark.
i ended up with my top two picks being beltran (who worked out well) and sexson (hmmph).

beyond that, it was a lot of players that i had barely ever heard of, and certainly wouldn't have picked. i still prefer to blame a lot of my sucking last year on autodrafting, and not my managerial ineptitude (even though i had only done straight counting stat leagues before, and didn't really understand rotisserie for pretty much the first month of the league). oh well...

the leglo (the leglo), Friday, 25 February 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 25 February 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

I am going to send my family to the inlaws and get RIPROARING DRUNK on draft night.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 26 February 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

So I decided to sort my PECOTA spreadsheet by Collapse rate while I was ranking my players.

Brandon Watson 61.0%
Eric Reed 60.9%
Dustin Smith 59.1%
Treni Hubbard 59.0%
Willy Taveras 59.0%
Chin-Lung Hu 58.0%
Ichiro Suzuki 56.5%
Joey Gathright 56.2%
Ross Gload 56.0%
Billy Hall 56.0%
Andres Galarraga 55.8%
Jamie Burke 55.1%
Benito Santiago 55.1%
Charles Gipson 54.8%
Robinzon Diaz 54.5%
Jose Reyes 54.2%

"Collapse" defined as "the percent chance that a hitter's EQR/PA will decrease by at least 20% relative to the weighted average of his ERA/PA in his three previous seasons of performance."

I was a little surprised to see both Ichiro and Reyes up there with Trenidad Hubbard and Andres Gallaraga.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

PECOTA may be treating Ichiro's record-breaking season as an outlier rather than trend-positive.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Hey, Gear!, I started a little league for family and friends; if you want a team, you can have one!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

pecota is also hard on players who rely on speed, as speed is often affected by injuries, etc.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

we still have one open spot in our league... is hstencil gonna play or what? who has more hunger for "the" "game"?!?!?!?!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

yeah, this league is the one I'm taking seriously, the other one is so my kids can use their awesome team names: The Nosferatu Tutus and the Vesuviuses. (My team is Beibu Rusu.)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Is the draft day going to be the 20th or 27th?

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 14 March 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

• Your live online draft is set for Sun Mar 20 4:45pm PST/5:45pm MST/6:45pm CST/7:45pm EST. Please arrive at least 10 minutes early since your draft will start promptly at the assigned time. You can pre-rank your players at any time.

• The draft order will be randomly determined approximately 30 minutes before the draft begins.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 14 March 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Jeez, I haven't even done my homework yet - it snuck up on me.

Shatterproof Glass (dymaxia), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Earl, don't pay attention to him! He's only the league commissioner! The draft is on the 27th! Pass it on! (Tee hee hee.)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Homework bah! I have a draft TOMORROW that I'm woefully unprepared for. Methinks I'll use that draft as the PSAT for the hard-knock scuffle that'll be the ILBB draft.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

my big draft is saturday. hopefully i get back in nyc in time for this one.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 14 March 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

oh wait, gygax! did you bounce me from the league? I still wanna play!

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Do you? I think it's a battle between you and Gear! over who is less interested in joining the league at this point.

But yes, there is one space available.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

yes i do wanna play! hrm, i just never checked this thread until now, i figured it was mostly full of pre-season shittalk. sorry.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh good this is a week before my first money league, I was afraid it was going to be the same night.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

Okay, the big question is: Which awesome players will I select this year and then dump because of a rocky start or a slump, only to see them go on to huge success? Last year's list: Johan Santana, Johnny Estrada, Michael Young....

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

hstencil and gygax, I thought of you when I read this.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

wow! i'd be horrible at that tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Ha, thanks MW... that sounds eerily like my friend's job (assistant to the assistant GM).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

what's the word gygax!?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

dude, read the lead post!!!

NO HAY ORQUESTA

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

i can't go to the league despite being logged into yahoo!.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

There was a problem:
• You are not allowed to view this page because you are not in this league. (Error #152)

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

You have to join the league before you can get into the league page, I think.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

Assuming you haven't joined the league.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

uh, i don't know how to do that. i tried joining and it didn't work.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Go to this URL:

http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/

You should have the option to join a league or create a team somewhere on that page (probably in BIG BOLD LETTERS as part of some picture). From there, use the League ID # (43955) & password (rickey) when prompted, and you should be good to go.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

it's hard to find, damn yahoo!, but i got in.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm so doing this.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Except I'm lazy and stupid. Does anyone want to tell me the answers?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

1. Felipe Alou's nickname is "Ol' Rough'n'Ready."
2. It is exactly 207 feet to the stands in right field, and another 47 feet into McCovey Cove.
3. Bobby Thomson = syphilis; Sal Maglie = chlymidia; Eddie Stanky = auto-erotic asphyxiation.
4. A.J. Pierszczyzkinski, last year, in the locker room before the game; 13 feet, 3 1/2 inches.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

For the essay question ("Which two MLB teams (not including the San Francisco Giants) made the most favorable moves for their team in the off-season this year? Explain why. (150 words or less)"), I'm going to say the Expos!

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

dude if you say "The Brewers" you'll get indie cred!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

but you'll probably not win, so don't say it

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Expos' most favorable move this year = ending their existance as the Expos = THEY WIN!

Matt loses points for mispelling Ksychewsksyski on #4.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

why can't i find cubbie ramirez in the pre-draft rankings? Also, is there anyone retired/severely injured I need to exclude from the auto-draft? last year i drafted nolan ryan or someone like that.

(can't make the live draft since I will be at spring training *brag* *brag*)

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

My fancy Earth 2 roster (in a 10-team 5x5 roto head-to-head league) includes Johan Santana, Curt Schilling, Bobby Abreu, Eric Chavez, Justin Morneau, Brad Lidge, & a bunch of other fun stuff. (Of course, it being a 10-team league, there's still plenty of people left on waivers - I think Barry Bonds is available.)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Also, in case you were wondering - yes, in a league where AVG and RBIs and Ws are king, I was using BP's PECOTA projections to draft in the later rounds.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

My starting roster (off the top of my head):

C: Jason Kendall
1B: Mark Teixera / Justin Morneau
2B: Jose Vidro
SS: Bobby Crosby / Khalil Greene
3B: Eric Chavez
OF: Bobby Abreu
OF: Jason Bay
OF: Richard Hidalgo / Mike Cameron / Teixeira (if he's eligible!)
UTIL: Justin Morneau / someone else

SP: Curt Schilling
SP: Johan Santana
RP: Brad Lidge
RP: Braden Looper
P: Miguel Batista (for SVs) / someone else (for Ws)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Batista is going to be in the J's starting rotation.
Or at least that's where he's beginning the season at.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

I heard Batista's gonna be the closer! The fudge!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Was there a thread to discuss which stats we're going to track?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

You're looking at it dude!

Same stats as last year + wild pitches I think.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

gonna miss the draft but i did my pre-ranking.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Same stats as last year + wild pitches I think.

OK, that's what I figured.
So these are the stats that are listed right now on the rosters (just to clarify, since I wasn't in the league last year)?

No JETER FACTOR :( ?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

Gonna miss the draft, too (for SLINT!), but I think I'll let Yahoo! job me & see if my awesome managerial skillz can overcome getting rogered by a crap algorithm.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I mitigated the chance of being jobbed by removing any no-hit catcher / crap pitcher / Yankee from my rankings.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 19 March 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

can somebody list the statistical categories here so that there's no confusion? (i.e. mine)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 19 March 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

R H HR RBI SB CS BB HBP K FPCT AVG OBP SLG OPS

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Saturday, 19 March 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

OK, I found them now. And the pitching stats are:

IP W SV HR BB HBP K HLD ERA WHIP K/BB K/9 (+WP, supposedly?)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 19 March 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Oh, hooray! Fielding percentage, my favorite stat!!

See some of youz tonight.

Shatterproof Glass (dymaxia), Sunday, 20 March 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Oh, fickle fuckery. Becuase I'm all hack wheeze cough, I WILL be available for the draft, NOT for the Slint (boo hiss!), which means A) I'll be spewing all sorts of woe-is-me bitterness in the chat room and B) I'll be making really bad draft decisions.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

amen, brother. i had the nice double whammy last year of not being able to be present AND getting the last draft pick. pretty sweet. oh, that and my best players were all injured to start the season (nomah, trot nixon & jason schmidt).

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

our family draft yesterday ended with my daughter all psyched because she got to make the last pick of the draft: COCO CRISP!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm picking Sean "Franken" Berry first. If that fails, Roberto Alomar.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 21 March 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

Oh, so Yahoo! is having the fun w/ me. There's a message on the front page, saying "YOUR LEAGUE IS DRAFTING NOW!" So I'm thinking it was actually 6:45 EST, not 7:45. So I click on the link, & there's the timer ticking down. 43+ minutes and counting. EFF YOU, YAHOO!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 21 March 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

Also, whoever changed their name to "Slint = Overrated" - you'd better be right.

I'll be quoting Slint throughout the night, BTW. Well, I'll probably just type "I MISS YOUUUUUUUU!" 76 times.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 21 March 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

damn, glad I'll be here for the draft. Soriano at 6?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 21 March 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

Aiyo, someone trade me a closer!

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Monday, 21 March 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

grrr. i think everything that could have gone wrong did. The java window went totally mental on me! I was drafting blind until i get the roomate's computer connected!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 21 March 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

I need a closer too!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 21 March 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

I NEED A SHORTSTOP! (Maybe.) (Jose Valentin can't hit .216 again, can he?)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 21 March 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

I can't take any more Jose, sorry. You have my sympathy.

Shatterproof Glass (dymaxia), Monday, 21 March 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

We don't need no stinking closer.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 21 March 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm not asking folks to take Jose - I'm just saying that I (might) NEED A SHORTSTOP!
