The Rolling 2005 FIRST PLACE BLUE JAYS thread

Hey -- the title is correct as of today.

In a 5-2 shellacking of the mighty Devil Rays, Halladay was sharp (2ER, 0BB, that's my boy), Wells, Hinske and Hudson all hit jacks, and the defense sparkled.

I'm sure this thread will just be six months of me and Thermo complaining about crappy bullpens, but who cares, I wanted an ILBB Blue Jays thread to call our own.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 4 April 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

David Bush's fine instincts should be congratulated, at least.

scrimshaw (scrimshaw1837), Monday, 4 April 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure this thread will just be six months of me and Thermo complaining about crappy bullpens
Oh - I'm sure it'll be much more than that. Like us complaining about our lack of a real clean-up hitter or the fact that almost our entire starting rotation is barely out of high school. I'm sure we'll have lots of fun!
I picked up our tickets for Friday, btw.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

And the quest for a perfect season continues...

My interest in the Jays (and baseball in general) usually decreases quite a bit by the end of June until the playoffs begin but maybe this season will be different. Maybe the lack of NHL playoffs will cause me to be bored of baseball by May.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

Why isn't the game on TV?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

btw...josh towers just LOOKS like he's in high school.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

Bloody craptastic bullpen.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

Ah yes, it begins again.

The line on Schoeneweis:

IP H R ER BB K HR PC-ST ERA
(L, 0-1; H, 3) 0.0 3 4 4 1 0 0 12-5 27.00

Way to pick up the hold, though!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

How the fuck do you blow a game and still get a hold?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

Better question - how do you get a hold w/out recording an out!?!?!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 7 April 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

They're still in first -- tied with the Yanks -- but New York's pythagorean record is a little better, so I think they might be a better team this year.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 7 April 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Jays almost pulled it out tonight against Foulke, scoring two runs off him and loading the bases with two outs. However, Hudson grounded out and it ended 6-5.

This was the most lively games I've seen in a while, a combination of opening day madness, Red Sox fans making the pilgimage to Toronto and Leafs fans letting off drunken steam in the absence of hockey.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 9 April 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

glad I don't have League anywhere.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 9 April 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

But it was mostly the Leafs fans armed to the teeth with free stuff!
But a great game - even tho WE MISSED SLASH!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 9 April 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

What was with the people throwing magnets (?) onto the field? Was that a combination of the previously mentioned drunken steam and being armed to the teeth with free stuff?
Even Geddy Lee was in attendance. He got alot of TV time too, sitting behind homeplate.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Saturday, 9 April 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Yup. They gave away these abnormally large fridge magnets that had the J's schedule on them - they flew like you wouldn't believe! I still can't get over how completely insane the crowd was.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 9 April 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

okay, so apparently mlb extra inning is doing a free weekend or somesuch and b/w watching the o's whup the yankees, i watched bits and pieces of bos-tor, cle-det, tb-oak & others. my question: what's w/ all the funky eyewear pitchers are sporting these days? league looked like he'd been plucked off the world series of poker or something.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Saturday, 9 April 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Thermo you bastard, Ortiz hit a three run shot off Halladay today. You'd better not cost me the W.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 9 April 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Never mind, they tied it up in the 7th. No W for me.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 9 April 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Hey hey, back to #1!

I kind of had a laugh after our conversation today I come home to see the stellar performance of you starters!

I've got just two words for you: Steve Reed.

AND IT'S YOUR FAULT! My team ERA nearly doubled yesterday thanks to Ortiz and Suppan.

My SP's are still a bit of a concern (relievers have been excellent) but half of my hitters haven't really picked it up yet. I'm not too concerned though -- Mike Lowell and Jose Vidro aren't going to hit .200 this season.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 10 April 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

AL RBI leaders:

1. H. Matsui, NYY 8
2. G. Motherfucking Zaun, Tor 8
3. J. Cantu, TB 6
4. D. Young, Det 6
5. P. Konerko, CWS 6

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 10 April 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Again with the fucking bullpen ... but they pulled it out in the 9th. I can't take an entire season of this.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 10 April 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Crazy - Greg Zaun and i have the same middle name.

A friend of mine showed up this morning with tickets for the game. And what a game it was! Quite the 9th inning but the end result is we're alone at #1. Plus Lilly and Walker pitched well so I'd say today wasn't total bad news from the bullpen.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 10 April 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't have guessed that the title of this thread would still be correct after a week of play. It should be interesting to see how they do on the upcoming 9 game road trip.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Sunday, 10 April 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Who are they playing?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 10 April 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

3 in Oakland, 4 in Texas, 2 in Boston. Then they get the Yankees for a couple in Toronto...

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Sunday, 10 April 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Everytime I see Greg Zaun's name I think of Superman II, his knickname should be "General Zod".

Still in first place, WITH THE BEST RECORD IN BASEBALL!!

Hinske is hitting out of his mind.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 04:04 (twenty years ago)

Dude's gonna fall on his keister if he doesn't improve his walk rate, tho.

Hinske & Zaun are (or were) 1-2 in RBIs. God bless April baseball.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

Indeed, that's but one reason why he is OUT OF HIS MIND.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

I really hope he's not taking plate discipline pointers from the Shea Hey kid. Back when Shea was a bigot w/ the Red Sox, there was a 2-month period where he was working counts, taking walks, and KILLING the ball whenever it got near his wheelhouse. And then he did what he usually does - swing swing swing, make contact wahey, ground into a good number of DPs but mitigate that w/ some 9th inning heroics against sub-standard relievers (or Mariano) and end up w/ a sexxy .280 AVG and a .310 OBP to abet those 70-80 RBIs. Founding Member of the John Kruk Clutch Hitter Brigade! Still not upset he was flipped for the Break Heart Kid. Say Hey!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

Hinske/Zaun 2005 = Wells/Delgado 2003! ha ha!

I'm shocked at how well Hinske is doing. I'm wondering if he's back in his ROY form or if he's going to settle back into his more recent .240 caliber hitting.

xpost bigot?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

After he was traded from Boston, he made some gay-bashing comment on a talk-radio show. I forget if it was directed at the team, or just the general demographic he was slagging off, & I don't remember the actual word choice, but, yeah, wahey.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

He must have mixed feelings about being up here if that's the case!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

Hinske & Zaun are (or were) 1-2 in RBIs.

Still are.

More fun April baseball facts:
Batista leads the league in saves
Jays are first in MLB in runs scored
... but only 13th in OBP.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Thursday, 21 April 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

They're a mess right now, doing everything wrong in a nightmarish 8th, turning a 5-4 lead into a 9-5 deficit (and the inning is still going).

Jays: about to be 9-9 on the season.

Negatives:
- Shea Hillenbrand doesn't walk, & he can't hit .390 forever
- Miguel Batista making like a low-rent Danny Kolb
- the bullpen making like, um, a crappy team's bullpen (from what I recall)

But, y'know, there's a chance they can flip Catalonotto & Batista to a contender for some prospects / MLB-ready talent (pitchers, ideally), & go forward w/ that.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 25 April 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

low rent danny kolb? ouch.

subsidized housing?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 25 April 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Shea Hillenbrand doesn't walk, & he can't hit .390 forever

And Corey Koskie can't hit .192, nor will Wells .234 forever (or I should hope not)!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

hillenbrand's a tried and true april/may guy, i'm not expecting him to have a breakout season. i'd be happy if he finished with a .300 ba and a .330 obp.

koskie looks wooden out there, but i don't nec. fault him for it -- he's solid a sixth hitter, NOT a cleanup guy. the jays never explicitly said he was carlos' replacement but they're clearly trying to sell him as a superstar type (witness sunday's pathetic corey koskie bat day promotion) and he's just not that kind of player. i think he's buckling under the weight of expectation and he'd probably do better with a little less responsibility when it comes to cashing guys in.

unfortunately there's no obvious take-charge power guy in the lineup to replace him. hinske's speedy start was a bit of a mirage and i am starting to seriously worry about wells. he's yielded diminishing returns for the last three years now, and nothing in his most recent plate appearances inspires confidence - he's hacking at any old shit up there. if he was hitting .233 with a .300 obp i wouldn't be worried but dude's walked three times in 80 pas so far this year, and his obp is .258. while he's hit a LOT better in the last week, i'm still not convinced that it comprises any meaningful return to form.

batista should be starting, period. the decision to turn him into a closer was ridiculous from the getgo. he doesnt have the makeup for a closer, he's better suffered as a #4/5 starter until his contract expires. overall i don't think the team is as bad as they've been in the last week or as good as they were in the beginning. if they can find a way to scrape out a .500 record until july, i'll be interested to see how they handle the trade deadline, esp. given the oodles and oodles of extra money they've suddenly got in the coffer.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

one of the reasons i'm legitimately worried about wells is that his best years came under delgado's protection. a lot of vernon's playing time coincided with carlos' injury time last year, and look at his numbers! his average dipped by 40 points, his obp by 12, his slugging by 70 and he struck out way more. this year isn't proving much better.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

also i'm starting to wonder if halladay is more hentgen than clemens.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

hold me, jp.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

one of the reasons i'm legitimately worried about wells is that his best years came under delgado's protection

Thermo and I have talked about this at length ... as you say, without protection he's not seeing as many good pitches and he's hacking away at crap. Even when the Jays scored 850 runs in 2003, the only guy in the lineup who knew how to take a walk was Delgado. Today, it remains a team-wide problem. And guys like Wells, who never had to worry about being patient because of Delgado's prescence, are now having to learn it two years later than they should have. I can excuse his lowered production last year, because of his DL stint, and also because I'm not convinced he was 100% healthy even when he was playing. But his start this season is definitely troubling.

OTOH, Halladay is the real deal. You can relax.

The defense was HORRIBLE in the Baltimore series, worse than in any series in recent memory.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Has VW ever been much of a walker, though? Answer: nope! Career high of 52 walks last year, about 1 every 10-11 plate appearances, which is still better than 3 in 80 PAs. What injury is he coming back from, tho - he still might be getting over it. And he's 26 right now (27 in December), so I wouldn't worry about it.

Fun fact: Koskie had a career high SLG last year (.495), but in his lowest AB total since 2001 (only 422). Mark's OTM - he's a solid hitter, but NOT in the 4-slot; 6 would be his best space.

For giggles, Hinske's walk rate (total BBs / BB per AB)
2002: 77 BBs / 1 every 7.3 ABs
2003: 59 BBs / 1 every 7.5 ABs
2004: 54 BBs / 1 every 10.5 ABs
2005: 7 BBs / 1 every 9.8 ABs

What was he waylaid w/ in 2K3? It almost looks like he overcompensated for not living up to expectations in 2003 by being overly aggressive in 2004.

[xpost]

Mark also w/ the good point re: Delgado - Wells w/out Delgado in the hole = less good pitches (for fear of walking VW & giving CD more rib-eyes). Couple that w/ spotty patience (& the pressure to perform, maybe), & wango dango, production decline?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

the jays' patience at the plate was one of the main reasons they got off to such a good start. for the first ten games it seemed like nearly everyone was grinding up there, especially hinske, hillenbrand, catallanato and (going going) zaun. in the last week they've settled back into their familiar patterns - lotsa guys are getting behind in the count or hacking away at first pitches. thats a slightly more defensible strategy if you're a three run homer factory, but as we've established, these guys aren't exactly bashers.

(xpost)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

wow, those hinske stats are so telling. he's not the kind of hitter who can go get a low and outside pitch or turn on something inside. he's got his wheelhouse but he doesn't see those kinds of balls until he gets deeper in the count. in other words, he NEEDS to be more patient at the plate in order to be successful. and its funny b/c you could sense him talking himself through his at bats in those first few weeks, it was so obvious that he was doing the mental work to break away from his hacky tendencies and get ahead in the count. i think what we've seen from him over the last couple of weeks is just a break away from that pattern, it's like 2003 -> 2004 in the span of a month, its like he enjoys a certain level of success and stops doing the work. it's gonna take longer than that to unlearn all those bad habits, eric!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

(don't look at me like that -- he's a lurker.)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

also, re: wells

Couple that w/ spotty patience (& the pressure to perform, maybe), & wango dango, production decline?

i hate to say it, but i think the 5-year, $15 million contract might've had something to do with it too.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

It's funny you mention Hillenbrand as a "grinder" - he might've been seeing a lot of pitches by virtue of the foul ball, but he's definitely not a "patient" hitter. He's a total slapper - doesn't K a lot, doesn't walk a lot, puts the ball in play. It's really a matter of where the ball ends up. No doubt pitchers that try to sneak by a 1st ball get-me-over strike get burned, but pitchers that nibble & tease & hit their spots (which, I think, w/ his swing, is anywhere except middle-in and low) will get his goat. I'm still surprised that Riccardi traded for him.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

but jp basically got him for free! can someone please explain to me why hillenbrand is so maligned?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

(btw dave, you're otm about shea and the foul ball. i consider a guy who seems to get 7-8 pitches per ab a grinder, even if he doesn't take a lot of walks in the end...)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Hillenbrand's rep = his value is primarily in his average, and as a player's average is subject to random fluctuations (mostly because you can, for instance, flip a fastball to right field, but where it ends up is really a matter of defensive positioning & the skill of the defense & good old luck), he's a catch as catch can guy. Average gap power, not much speed, average defender - if he's either missing the ball OR putting the ball into fielder's gloves, he's pretty much a lump.

No doubt hitting at Bank One Ballpark (one of the best non-Coors hitter-friendly park in the NL) the past 1.5 years helped patch over the rough spots. But look @ these road / home splits from last year:

HOME: .347 / .381 / .540 (265 ABs)
ROAD: .276 / .318 / .397 (297 ABs)

And look what he's doing this year (albeit in a ridiculously small sample):

HOME: .258 / .303 / .387 (31 ABs)
ROAD: .440 / .472 / .600 (50 ABs)

Never mind his first half-year in Arizona, where he managed a .316 OBP at home w/ a .280 BA, while still slugging .481! JOE CARTER LIVES!

i think a lot of jays fans operate under the assumption that bell was significantly more productive than he actually was

A lot of 1980's Jays are lionized because a) they were there when the club started winning division pennants, b) almost all of them were homegrown talent. This puts them in a significantly different category than the Molitors and Alomars, who were better players and WS winners.

That said, Stieb is by far the best pitcher the Jays ever developed, and was instrumental in changing the club's rep from that of an expansion joke to a young contender. His number is deservedly retired. And Delgado is by the best hitter they've developed, and should have his number retired one day, no question.

Fuck Cito Gaston, though.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 25 April 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Delgado is by *far* the best hitter ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 25 April 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

dude, if you're going to retire george bell, you GOTS to be retiring tony fernandez.

i think you can also make pretty solid cases for olerud and mallomar, too.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 25 April 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Fuck Cito Gaston, though.

:(

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 April 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

(co-sign on fernandez, alomar, delgado retirement sentiments)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 April 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

how bout jimmy key? i can also totally see retirement of clemens number...

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Wait, I think Fernandez' number is retired. He's on the Wall of Fame, or whatever it's called, in the Dome. Is that the same thing?

Clemens might be the best player to ever wear a Jays uniform, but he was only here for two years and bolted as soon as he could (the former being far more significant to the issue at hand). He doesn't deserve to have his number retired here.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

not saying whether or not he deserves it, but everyone loves a winner and when a winner call it a day, everyone w/ a conceivable claim to a piece of the winner's legacy cashes in their chips.

so, journey w/ me, if you will, to that day in the not-too-distant future when the rocket is on his farewell tour...you think ny, boston, toronto & houston won't all retire his number? i'd be surprised if they didn't.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 25 April 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

and just like that!

jays can their hitting coach...

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 25 April 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

iiiiiiiiiiinteresting.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 April 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

when a winner call it a day, everyone w/ a conceivable claim to a piece of the winner's legacy cashes in their chips

Is there any precedent for this, in any sport? Will SD, Cleveland, and Baltimore retire Alomar's number? Are the clubs lining up to retire Boggs' number? etc.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 25 April 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

well, i was specifically thinking of the wizards retiring jordan's number and he was nothing pretty to watch in his time there. harmon killebrew is on the wall of fame at rfk and he played one or two seasons in dc before the senators became the twins. i would be willing to bet that nolan ryan has multiple retired numbers, though admittedly, probably not w/ the mets.

and i think you know that the boggs comparison doesn't hold water and although alomar might, i think the revered status of the cy young award and all associated w/ winning a couple makes a difference...but what do i know?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 25 April 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

ha! apparently, there is ample baseball precedent (besides the fact that everybody retired #42)

http://www.answers.com/topic/list-of-major-league-baseball-retired-numbers

nolan ryan: angels, astros, rangers
rollie fingers: a's, brewers
reggie jackson: a's, yanks
frank robinson: o's, reds

there a few more, and for what it's worth...the devil rays DID retire wade boggs number!

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 25 April 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Boggs wasn't a good example.

Fingers, Reggie, and Frank Robinson all spent many of their prime years with each of those clubs, and won pennants with them (except for Robinson with the Reds, IIRC).

Ryan finished his career with the Rangers, but it was his hometown. Ditto Boggs.

Hank Aaron spent only two years with the Brewers and had his number retired, but a) he's HANK FUCKING AARON, and b) he played in Milwaukee for a few years when the Braves moved there from Boston (and won the WS).

OTOH, Clemens didn't win with the Jays, didn't particularly like playing here, and was only here for two years.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 25 April 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

He wasn't exactly pleasant either.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 25 April 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

i mean, i guess it ultimately comes down to how the player is viewed by the franchise & the fans.

i'll actually be curious to see what the nats do w/ pedro and the unit when the time comes.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 25 April 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

Agreed. Right now, I can't see Clemens' number being retired by the Jays. Also, how many casual fans even remember that he played here?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 25 April 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

thats probably not a good benchmark. the jays' casual fans cheer an infield popup off the bat like its got a shot at windows.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

I meant casual fans in general, not just ones in Toronto (although your comment does help illustrate that Clemens is hardly an icon around these parts).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

The J's casual fans cheer?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

the jays fans are casual.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

They also bear a striking resemblance to empty seats.

(oh ha)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

Torontonians... for the Aug 5 game vs the Yankees during the SABR convention, I have a choice of Club 200 Infield seats (Sections 221-222; first base side of home plate) or Field Level Box Tickets (Section 130A; lower bowl along the left field line). Any reason not to do the former? I like first base.

(The Rogers Centre map on the site is hideously fuzzy.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Oops -- I just noticed the LF field box will set me back $25, the Club seat $47! Decision made. Sorry. (that's bizarre, I think all the game seats have been equivalently priced at previous conventions)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

You're closer to the field there anyhow.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Wow, LF field level seats for $25? You guys are obviously getting the group rate.

Sections 221-2 might the sweetest seats in the whole stadium, fantastic view, cushy seats, right behind home plate, plus swanky bars and concessions on the 200 Level. But on a relative scale, there's no way they're worth twice as much as Section 130A, unless you really really like sitting in a comfy chair at the game. So you definitely made a good decision.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:51 (twenty years ago)

Any more questions about whether Halladay is 4Real this season?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

Looks like i missed quite the matchup.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 30 April 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

Would you say Vinny chulked on Saturday?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 1 May 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

It took you 24 hours to come up with that one?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 1 May 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Today's game is a corker. With the way they've been battling, you'd think that the Jays were contenders.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 1 May 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Sadder still, MIR, I found it necessary to go to the library on Sunday to post that one (I'm surely the only member of this board who doesn't own a puter?).

I gotta read that Prospectus annual cover to cover -- Chulk threw 56 innings last year and he never registered in my brain...

This week provides an excellent opportunity for the Jays to cool off the AL's two biggest illusions (tho I have more faith in the O's playing well into summer than the Ozzsox).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 May 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

man, this team has been so much fun to watch this year.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

Even when you're reduced to listening on the radio it's still pretty good.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

reduced!! i was practically weaned on tom and jerry.

and now we've taken the lead.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

fucking RIGHT. not only did we snap baltimore's win streak on the road, but a committee of five pitchers held their lineup to seven hits over twelve innings. after years and years of suffering, it's nice to get a small reminder of what it feels like to be competitive.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

So was I!
And now Batista's just ended the game. Nice.
xpost

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

Tom and Jerry. Grew up on that shit. Used to know all the silly radio commercials and jingles by heart. Etc.

But I'm not going to stick my neck out yet and predict that the Jays will finish higher than fourth.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

oh don't get me wrong, i still think the absolute best we can hope for is 81-81, but it's just nice to be winning here and there.

we should totally see how many of those jingles we can remember.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

perhaps a little o's nostalgia, but zaun is definitely one of my favorite stories in the early going. chacin seems to have the o's number...think he blanked them in his mlb debut.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

4. "If there was a hall of fame for refrigerators ... " (Amana? I think)

5. There was an ad where they sung "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" with new lyrics, it started "TMOTTB, buy me pizza and beer". Not only do I not remember the rest of the lyrics, but I can't remember what they were advertising (this ran in 1988-9).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Zaun had a really hot start last year too. I suppose he's getting more attention now because a) the Jays are competitive, b) the big team stories last year were nothing but injuries, injuries, injuries, whereas now everybody is healthy (cross fingers, etc.) so everyone is talking about performance instead. There's also the Ewing theory aspect with the team playing better without Delgado (although you could certainly argue that Halladay is, and was, their best player).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

and halladay goes tomorrow!!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

fun fact 1: the yankees are paying kevin brown more than the entire jays rotation

fun fact 2: rick dempsey is gregg zaun's uncle

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

I'm getting more enjoyment out of Fact 2 than I am out of Fact 1.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

Towers vs Santana ... what a mismatch ... FOR TOWERS, THAT IS.

OK, Towers hasn't been all that great and had to escape two bases loaded situations. But our boys rocked Santana for seven runs, including two tacos. GO JAYS.

"I like that aggressive play," [manager John] Gibbons said.

Talk about a silver lining.

I assume this means that Hillenbrand will take over at third? Or maybe he and Hinske will take turns playing 1B-3B?

I wish I had TV.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 21 May 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Halladay was a machine today.

And how about that Aaron Hill??! He's been getting trained up at third, you know.

Ha ha, what a division to be in. The Jays are 3rd.. 3rd 3rd 3rd behind the Red Sox. They're playing okay, playing okay few games out of second, playing okay; and then they sweep the Sox. So.. who winds up the second place team in the Al east? Why the Yankees you dumb fuck, who else.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 28 May 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

Halladay just finished dismantling the Twins, throwing a 95-pitch shutout while striking out ten, walking none, and allowing just two hits (a bunt single and an infield single). Injury, what injury?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 29 May 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

im psyched to see chad gaudin!

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 29 May 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

Gaudin's slider was nasty. He had guys swinging at pitches in the dirt all night.

MIR etc - did that story i read awhile ago about ricciardi loosening the reins a bit hold true? ie are the jays maybe occasionally bunting/stealing this year? or is the old billy beane manager-as-figurehead model still in full swing?

John (jdahlem), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

I haven't noticed anything like that. The Jays offense is fairly fragile this year, I can't think of a better way to put it. They've scored their fair share of runs, but they don't walk much, don't hit for a lot of power (better than last year, though), aren't particularly speedy, etc. When a team doesn't excel at any one thing, it doesn't take much for them to fall in a slump -- when one area of their hitting game falters, there's nothing to fall back on.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

They were running a fair amount up untill a month ago. Not sure why they stopped.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Going into the Houston series, the Blue Jays were 0-24 when trailing after six innings ... holy fuck.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 13 June 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 9 July 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

Update: worst series of the season.

Game 1: cruising with a big lead and Halladay on the mound. The next thing you know, Halladay is out for a month with a broken leg, and the bullpen blows the lead in the 9th.

Game 2: cruising with a 3-0 lead, then a blown HR call changes that and breaks the game wide open, but the Jays still almost come back from nine down in the ninth, falling short with the tying run at the plate.

Game 3: 5-5 in the eighth, followed by the Rangers' 748th and 749th HR's of the weekend, opening up a four-run lead. The Jays come back yet again, and get the tying run on third with one out and fail to score -- WHY DIDN'T THEY PINCH-RUN FOR ZAUN??

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 10 July 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 10 July 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

me too.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 10 July 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Why did Gibbons yank Lilly in favour of Gaudin, of all people?

The Jays need a eight-game winning streak like nobody's business. This was their chance, with Halladay out and a string of sub-.500 teams on the schedule.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 24 July 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

i don't understand this baseball team.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

They're saying Halladay might be ready in a week? I'm praying it's for the SABR game I'll be seeing a week from Friday.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

He threw off the mound yesterday, threw all of his pitches, and said that everything felt fine. I'm not sure if he threw at full velocity, but regardless, it's only been 2.5 weeks -- his recovery is amazing. I think he was off crutches in about 10 days, too.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

ROIDS

CHECK HIM FOR ROIDS

AND VITAMIN C PILLS

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

these last two weeks have been absolutely maddening. we lost 3 out of 4 to tampa bay and 2 out of 3 to kansas while boston and new york spun their wheels. just when i'm ready to give up on this team, we beat the los angeles angels of anaheim from the american state of california 8-0?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

also, call me crazy, but a month seemed like way too long for someone of halladay's composition to be out with a mere leg injury.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Hey, Mark! Did you & your pal get to see the Cubs while in Chitown?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

One thing which might have sped up his recovery is the fact that his left leg was broken -- that is, not the leg he uses to push off the mound. It's less crucial for him to have full strength and mobility in that leg, so he can wear a brace for some extra support and still pitch virtually at 100%.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

oh man, did we ever. we found an old guy whose son had cancelled on him an hour before gametime standing at the will call booth, looking to unload his $100 pair of tickets for... $100.

our seast were nine rows up, right between home and first base. lee, burnitz and ramirez hit homers, zambrano picked someone off and hit a bases-loaded double, vince vaughan sang, i tripled my cholesterol and the cubs won 8-2. s'awesome.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit, that's awesome! On the downside, you did miss seeing the lead singer of Les Savy Fav get wood and use a Slip 'n' Slide in the middle of the crowd, but I think that's something you can live w/.

Mark, you were in Chi town? Weird - I was at the Sox-Sox game on Sunday!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

mmm, sox on sox.

i was there for 1nt0n@t10n.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

The Jays expected W-L record is 57-42, which is 2nd best in the AL and 4th best in the majors (trailing Atlanta, St. Louis and the White Sox). They're underperforming by seven games.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 28 July 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

The culprit -- their 5-15 record in one-run games is by far the worst in the majors.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 28 July 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

And just like that, they win a one-run game in 10 innings! The reverse jinx was in effect!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 28 July 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

keep talking, barry!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 28 July 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

back to the jays: what do we think of the rumored hillenbrand for lohse deal?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

It looked like the Jays were going to be shut out for about the 8th time this season (incredible for a team that scores so much) but then we got lucky with a walk and two broken bat singles off of K-Rod to tie the game at 1. I was all set to brag about how the breaks are finally coming our way.

This game is now in the 17th inning, tied 1-1. One more inning and it's the longest in Jays history.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 29 July 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

Jays win in the bottom of the 18th on a single, SB, passed ball, and a single through a drawn-in five-man infield!

Them's the breaks.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 29 July 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

i don't understand this baseball team.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 29 July 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

18 inning!!!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 29 July 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

Natcherly, they decide to start Halladay next Sunday, when I'll be waiting to board my plane back to NY. :p

I hope with the patchwork rotation this means Chacin goes on Friday (vs Johnson, maybe).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm feeling better about my All-Star prediction about Garland not winning 20 this year.

Go Jays.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

So they only beat Johnson, whatta letdown. That's karmic payback for HAVING A-ROD ON THE COVER OF THE JAYS PROGRAM!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Losing 9-8 to Detroit in 12 innings -- the toughest loss of the year?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 02:28 (twenty years ago)

it was definitely the most FUN game i've been to all year. it doesn't feel like a tough loss though. maybe that's cause i've stopped thinking we have a chance?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

Was the dome as empty as it looked in the highlights?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

i was switching back and forth between this game and the rangers-bosox one. a good night for baseball! and wtf was up with schoenweis trying to throw away the intentional walk pitch out!!!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Sheehan of BP on last Friday:

The Jays simply didn’t play baseball. They had first and second with one out in the first and didn't score. They then allowed Small--Aaron Small!--to retire 10 straight batters before putting together a rally in the fifth, but after having first and second with no one out, and the bases loaded with one out, they again failed to score. In the sixth, they had first and third with no one out and didn't score. In the seventh, they finally converted a leadoff double for a run, but no more. Two Yankee runs in the eighth would turn a 3-1 game into 5-1 and effectively end the night. The tally for the Jays? Nine hits, three walks, a hit batter, two GIDPs, 3-for-13 with RISP, and a loss, in the middle of a race, to Aaron Small.

He then points out they have to hurt thermselves daily by playing "Corey Koskie's contract."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

As bad as Friday was, yesterday was worse. 20 hits and they lose. After blowing a 9th inning lead and getting a million guys on base in extra innings, but failing to score.

I don't have BP 2005 in front of me, but they did a number on Koskie back in the spring, noting that the Jays could have four or five better 3B-men in the organization by the start of 2006 (Aaron Hill was specifically named, of course). In the view of the Jays' brass, the best case 3B-related scenario would be Hinske staying hot for the rest of the year, and finishing at .275/.350/.450 or thereabouts so that they can trade him for something more than a few rolls of artificial turf.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

yeah, for all of riccardi's talk of more payroll flexibility, etc, he sure hasn't done anything with it!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

The payroll thing wasn't announced until the '05 season was just about to get started. So he won't really be able to do much of anything with it until the next offseason.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

yeah. the thinking is that he's better off banking this year's money while he develops rookies so that he can make an even bigger splash over the next few off-seasons.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

The Tigers catcher just called called back to the batters box after getting hit by a pitch. I don't think I've ever seen that before. He leaned into a pitch last night too, so I guess the umps were looking for it tonight and weren't going to let him get away with it this time.

Downs no less!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 11 August 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

I think 28 000 of those people were under the age of 12 (it was Camp Day at the Rogers Centre today).

Great performance by the Jays though, and particularly Scott Downs, with a 2-hit, 0 BB, 89 pitch performance through 7 IP of work. With outings like that, who needs Halladay?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 11 August 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

BLASPHEMY!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 11 August 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

His return date is now completely uncertain. It could be a week, it could be two, it could be longer. Nobody knows.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 11 August 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

no need to rush him anymore. both the cy young and a wildcard spot are out of reach.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 11 August 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

yeah, we should totally give up.

a Side-walkin' Street Wheeler (aaron ef.), Friday, 12 August 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

hi aaron, how's your reading comp? i said "no need to rush him".

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 12 August 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Still a 5% playoff shot per BP.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

obviously never say never and all that, just trying to think prudently here.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, you don't jeopardize an ace's career for that obv. Same reason Bonds should sit til '06.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

greg zaun, just know that i love you.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 13 August 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

you too, alex rios.

you too.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 13 August 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Jays playoff chances are more than 5%, because BP projects based on actual W-L records instead of Pythagorean W-L records. Yes, they have to make up "actual" games in the standings to make the playoffs, but their excellent Pyth record indicates that they're more likely to get hot and go on a run than their actual W-L record would suggest (and they're still doing all this without Halladay).

But yeah, you don't jeopardize the arm of one of the greatest pitchers in the history of the organization no matter what.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 13 August 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

thanks to tonight's win, they're 5 games above .500 for the first time all season.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 13 August 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Okay, now I'll be the prudent one: 12-0 to baltimore and then lost 0-1 to them?! how are we supposed to expect to...well, you get the picture.

a Side-walkin' Street Wheeler (aaron ef.), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Halladay is still first in VORP among AL pitchers -- by a fair margin. Give him the Cy!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 15 August 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

2-1 Angels in the fifth, and the Jays intentionally walked Vlad with runners on first and second with two out. Molina flew out with the bases juiced to end the inning. Ballsy move.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone been tracking Molina's job of protecting Vlad (because from what I've seen it ain't working)?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

Molina in the #5 slot: 333 / 386 / 538 (in 78 ABs) w/ 4 HR, 4 2B

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 18 August 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

four games back! geeze.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 18 August 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

Earth to Blue Jays: YOU'RE FACING AL FUCKING LEITER. AGAIN. WHY ARE YOU HIS BITCHES??

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

Fuck the Jays. The dream is over. They let Al Leiter hang around until the eighth, let the Yankees back into the game again and again, and Batista (who has sucked over the past month or so) blew the lead in the ninth. Watching him walk the #9 hitter, fall behind Jeter 2-0 only to be forced to give him a free pass as well, and finally get ahead of a batter (Felix Escalona? WHO????) 0-2 before giving up the game winning hit.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Ha haha! BArry.. "the dream"? Ha haaha.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 03:48 (twenty years ago)

Yuck, that was ugly. Even tho I pegged the Jays for 80 wins and the Yanks for the wildcard, I'm sorry to see things tipping in that direction

Oh what the hell, why did he leave Towers in to face Ortiz with the score 3-3 in the eighth? I know they're not playing for anything, and Towers had only thrown 95 pitches, but it was the obvious move to make. Pat Tabler is on TV saying "it was definitely right to leave him in there -- you have to give Towers the chance to win the game". FCUK THAT macho bullshit, teams win games. in the three game series: 4 HR, 7RBI

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 15 September 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, with two of those homers being late-inning game winners. Still, the Jays are 9-5 vs Boston so far this year -- a massive improvement over their 2-35 record from last year, or something to that effect.

We should try to catch one more game together before the end of the season. Just NYY, SEA, and KC series left to go!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

The record for one game is 5 (and it's a long list).

Shea Hillenbrand has 6 today in 7 ABs.

Can I get this printed on a t-shirt?

I hate the Yankees and would prefer that Boston went to the playoffs, but we should have had this one. A 4-1 lead, bases loaded in the fourth with a chance to break the game open, something like 1-11 with runners in scoring position, about a dozen runners left on, BATISTA, etc.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 30 September 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

What the hell happened to this fucker anyways? He was doing so well for so long! And then so terrible!
Did Kotch take up the Witchcraft or something???

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 30 September 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

now now

A one-out single by Bernie Williams off Scott Schoeneweis was followed by two-out walks to Derek Jeter and Rodriguez, issued by Jason Frasor. Miguel Batista came on and struck out Jason Giambi to keep the Blue Jays on top.

Batista then struck out the side in the ninth to notch his 30th save.

wasnt even a week ago!

of course i've only watched the past few weeks this season and it seems like he's chucked total garbage every other time. plus he's got a 6.06 era with 2 blown so far in my mvp 2005 season, the bum.

freddie freeloler (freddie freeloler), Friday, 30 September 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

That should be Koch in my last post.

Anyhow here's the monthly breakdown for Batista, you be the judge:
April: 2.70 ERA, .302 BAA, 1 BS, 1-0
May: 0.73 ERA, .098 BAA, 0 BS, 2-0
June: 3.46 ERA, .217 BAA, 0 BS, 1-0
July: 4.20 ERA, .357 BAA, 2 BS, 1-3
Aug: 6.08 ERA, .278 BAA, 2 BS, 0-2
Sept: 7.36 ERA, .295 BAA, 3 BS, 0-3

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 30 September 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Acc to SABR's Bruce Brown, no member of the 1992 WS Champion Toronto Blue Jays will appear in the World Series in 2005, the first time since that championship year that no '92 Jay has been a member of the team in the Fall Classic.

Mike Timlin, John Olerud, David Wells, and Al Leiter were this year's best hopes.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 13 October 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

That's a neat stat. I had no idea.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 October 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

However, one could put asterisks next to '95 & '01:

1992 lots
1993 lots
1994 no Series
1995 Dave Winfield, Indians (last career game October 1)
1996 David Cone, Yankees
1997 Al Leiter, Marlins
1998 David Cone, Yankees
1999 David Cone, Yankees
2000 David Cone, Yankees and Al Leiter, Mets
2001 Todd Stottlemyre, Diamondbacks (missed 2001 season through injury)
2002 Jeff Kent, Giants (Kent was traded from Jays on August 27, 1992)
2003 David Wells, Yankees
2004 Mike Timlin, Red Sox

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 14 October 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Al Leiter was hardly an essential component of the '92 Blue Jays tho.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

"Essential" ain't relevant!

Also the list above was missing these:

1996 Jimmy Key and Dave Weathers, Yankees
1997 Devon White, Marlins
1998 David Wells, Yankees - Greg Myers, Padres
2000 Derek Bell, Mets
