featuring: sir fat sidney legal news, daniel cabrera hit batsmen counter, luis matos injury watch, the great pending sosa controversy and much, much more!

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 8 April 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

The O's are now the Dodgers cir. 1999

Jimmy Mod Knows You Eat Your Own Farts (ModJ), Friday, 8 April 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Ouch. So would Ponson be Carlos Perez or Darren Dreifort? (Also, I phear the O's would KILL to have the D's '99 staff, and that includes CP.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 8 April 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

all i can say to that is, who the fuck is jeff shaw? i mean...that's a lot of saves for a dude i've never heard of.

how 'bout that?

and i will say that sir fat sidney is both darren dreifort AND carlos perez! in size, if not alternate personalities.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 8 April 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

rodrigo lopez no-hitter through four!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Sunday, 10 April 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

very good outing by lopez today. is mel mental starting to wake up? raffy sure has had it dialed in the last couple games.

but i gotta say: all those hard shots comin back up the middle...it was like 'nam out there, man!

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Sunday, 10 April 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Is Albert Belle still under contract?

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Monday, 11 April 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

"[He had] nothing. Probably the worst stuff I've ever seen. The guy throws 83-84 mph. Come on! He was like [Baltimore's] Rodrigo [Lopez] -- very mediocre stuff. You think that we could get 20 hits off a guy like that. That's the way it is in baseball. Sometimes it's hard to explain."
--A’s third baseman Eric Chavez, on opposing pitcher Hideo Nomo, who defeated the A’s this week (Contra Costa Times)

didn't know whether to put this in a's or o's, but...

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 11 April 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Eric Chavez sounds like he's describing every 6th-7th-8th inning guy on the A's for the past 4 years.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 April 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

PS: search I Love Baseball and I Love Everything Fantasy Baseball threads for my Rodrigo Lopez love.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 April 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

thing is, it's not like rodrigo lopez is a completely unknown quantity. looking at his 2002 & 2004 numbers, you can't help but be at least a little impressed. i noticed in the yanks game yesterday that it looked like he was starting to lose it the 3rd time through the order, but regained his composure. i think he's 5-3 against the yanks w/ a sub 3 era and that even figures in his injury-riddled 2003.

it'll be interesting to see if he can go deeper in to games a little more consistently this year as he didn't pitch winter ball in mexico.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 11 April 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Exactly, I think you and I discussed at length last season his tendency to run out of gas after the 5th inning.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 April 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Washington haven't played at home yet (I mean wtf, NINE road games to start the season? Truly, the former Spos are still the redheaded stepchild of MLB), but Camden Yards attendance looked low for the season opening series (besides opening day).

Soon, we'll get actual answers about whether or not Washington leeches fans from Baltimore.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

ha!

i'd characterize it as how many washingtonians angelos has alienated, but, hey...reasonable people can disagree.

given the growth of the region since 1954 (when the griffith family welcomed baseball up the road), there is no reason b'more should not be able to support itself w/o getting big $ from washington.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Exactly, although of course Angelos has been saying the opposite for years. I'm pretty sure that Angelos will end up eating crow here, it would teach him (and Selig, who frequently caves to the whims of individual owners) right.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

is it just that i've actually seen more would be homers off the foul pole ruled foul this year, or is there higher incident of this in the early going this season?

looked like sammy was feeling it last night.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

beasts of the east! best record in al east play.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Saturday, 16 April 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

...and sammy sosa is on pace for 80 Ks.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Saturday, 16 April 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

...and it looks like last night just made the o's angry. 6-nil bottom of 4.

sir fat sidney has only walked one and allowed 4 hits through 4 ip. a season low, i reckon.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

per my earlier comments on o's prospects, see #2 & #19 on attached...

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

walter young boosted his average to .500 after 12 games. 6 Ks in 48 ab & .750 slg.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

brian roberts, back on the horse w/ a leadoff hr against toronto.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Saturday, 23 April 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

BOOOOO - should be a tie game right now.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 23 April 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

was it a controversial play?

you know zaun is rick dempsey's nephew, right?

it's not on tv in de today...which doesn't exactly matter b/c i'm at the library.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Saturday, 23 April 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

I did not know that!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 23 April 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

blue jays implosion.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Saturday, 23 April 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Fat Sidney needed special permission from the Canadian govt to enter the country, stemming from his DUI charge. They issued him a three-day visa and he arrived in the 8th inning of Friday's game.

He's taking out his frustration on us right now.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 24 April 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

from what i can tell, he's really pitched a hell of a game. 3 hits, 3 bb, 0 er & 7 k in 8 innings is okay by me.

kind of funny that a dude w/ a 6 + era is looking to lead the starters in wins, though.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

You know, maybe I'm completely nuts, but I think there's a realistic (albeit not likely) chance that the O's could finish ahead of the Yanks and BoSox. Their offense is comparable, and if things go wrong(er) for NY and Boston, their pitching might also be on the same level.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

not so much the dui charge but the assaulting th' judge thing but yeah both are bad

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

If the O's can, on a consistent basis, get Erik Bedard to pitch even close to the way he pitched in that game against Danny Haren a few weeks back, I like Baltimore's chances very much.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

i'll definitely be curious to see how things stand at the end of the boston series. everything i read at the outset of the season said 11 of the first 22 against boston & new york could be the nail in mazzilli's coffin. if they come out of this series w/ the best overall record in the east, and the best record against east opponents...i wonder.

the o's have a pretty soft run after this series.

there ought to be some adjustments w/ the rotation. i think bedard can pitch near the level he pitched in that a's game, cabrera and ponson will settle down and chen will probably get figured out. i don't think it's unrealistic that rodrigo lopez could win more than 15.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

cabrera and ponson will settle down

If wishes were horses, I'd be starring in Equus.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

perhaps...but maybe you didn't see ponson pitch at all second half last year where he was 8-3 w/ a 3 something era? only schilling, randy johnson and livan hernandez have more complete games that aruba fats going back to 1999.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

from the sun:

"No team can make a case like the Orioles'. Through 21 games, they lead the AL in batting average (.303), slugging percentage (.489) and runs scored (125). They are second in the AL with 29 home runs, but as a result of their versatile lineup, they also are second in the league with 22 steals."

also #5 in the mlb in obp.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

it's certainly tough to question their offense. roberts has to come back to earth, but palmeiro is starting to perk up a bit.

rodrigo didn't look too hot the other night, but the sox and yankee staffs seem worse off these days. the o's are in a nice spot as underdogs who don't have the insane expectations to face, either.

and good lord does ray miller have some gargantuan ears.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

well, i heard something to the effect that since he's been w/ the o's, rodrigo has the best record against the sox among active pitchers (8-3), but has averaged 8 er in his losses.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

okay, so miggy tejada is one shy of the o's record for april rbi set by, who, you ask?

mike bordick. i guess that was that season he played well and the o's traded him to the mets for mel mental.

another fun fact: the o's have no 'murikans in their starting rotation.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Saturday, 30 April 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

btw...outside of his shellacking in detroit, bedard has looked incredible this year. apparently, he's done a lot of work w/ miller in getting his pitch counts down. averaged 21.1 per inning last year...thinks it's in the 11-15 range this year. is that possible?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Saturday, 30 April 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

crank up your truth machines, kids...o's have the resurgent (again) jays this week, minnesota and chicago next week.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 2 May 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

i kind of love miguel tejada

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Get in line!

I'd love to know what happened to turn Miggy from the .260 strugglebunny folks saw leaving Oakland to the world-beating god he's become in CrabCakeVille.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Miggy's greatness as a player is the ONE PLACE where I see eye-to-eye w/ Joe Morgan.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

gotta love the miggy AND mel mental. they just seem like swell guys. it is kind of funny, at his current contract, mora is one of the best bargains in baseball, and the man has quintuplets!

and it seems to me that tejada was a mvp before he left oaktown w/ numbers.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Well, yeah, but that last year was subpar (by his standards), so for him to do even BETTER than he ever did as AL MVP is shocking. In a good way. Except when he's playing the Red Sox. Dammit.

& actually, his "struggles" his last year in Oaktown weren't as bad as I had thought. Please strike my "strugglebunny" comment from the official record, plz.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

He was not the best choice the year he won the MVP tho ... peaking in September will do that for you. But yeah, he might have his best season.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

it all comes out in the wash, though...i think you can make a pretty strong case for tejada over vlad last year.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Tejada finished strong in his last year in Oakland. He was horrible for the first couple of months and caught a lot of bad publicity for that as the reigning MVP. That's probably why you remember him having a bad year.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

rodrigo lopez going for the cycle: 3 singles, a k, a hit batsman...wild pitch? balk?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 2 May 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

Lopez never does well vs the J's

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 2 May 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

nice outing for young daniel cabrera this evening (8IP/4H/1ER/8K) to no avail. four walks, though, and the two in the 8th led to his demise. really awful baserunning by the o's, who had 3 hits and had 3 runners tagged out between first and second (roberts picked off first, matos caught in a rundown after a "delayed" steal, bigbie caught in a rundown after a botched hit-and-run). the o's never got a runner to second!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

weak, dude.

i blame society! and the hype!

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

bedard throws another masterpiece. 4H, 2BB, 1ER, 12K, 8IP.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

unbelievable, sosa actually came thru.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

so: lee mazilli, c/d? right now i have to give ray miller all kinds of credit, but mazilli is still kind of a cypher to me. after all, it's not all that hard to run out that lineup every day. it'll be interesting how the o's handle fitting gibbons/bigbie/newhan/palmeiro/surhoff etc into the lineup without people getting pissed off (and getting javier some dh time).

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

Those last two you list should be the pine jockeys of the 5.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 5 May 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

hmmm. i am not a jay gibbons believer--and palmeiro's a better defensive first baseman (ouch)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 5 May 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

i drink the gibbons "if he's healthy" kool aid.

never understood the hatred of b.j.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 5 May 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

Not hating, just saying that, y'know, he's kinda past his prime, he's taking time away from players that might be around in the next couple of years, so, y'know, step aside, Grampa.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 5 May 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

baseball america's latest prospect hot sheet lists walter young's position as "gigantor."

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

how about that daniel cabrera? 1ER, 6BB, 19K in his last 16IP.

btw, i was at the kc game the other night and ponson looked pretty good, too. granted, it's against kc...but still.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

SCHMORIOLES

According to some well-known numba crunchas, Palmeiro's lackluster performance will cost the O's a couple of games.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

FREE WALTER YOUNG!

yeah, i mean raffy's signing was clearly an attempt at atonement for letting him go in the first place...but dammit, dave, your number crunchers can't measure raffy's heart!

...you need a sonogram to do that.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Dude pops enough Viagra, it'll be REAL easy to measure his heart.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

re: the sunday balk

[the ump who called the balk on sunday] was known in the 1990s as the hair-trigger enforcer of the balk rule ... to the point where his crew was credited by one publication with about a third of all the balks called in the National League over a five-year period from 1993 to 1997.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

Once Raffy gets #3k he'll be grabbing pine. Of course, that might not be til August at this rate!

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Soon, we'll get actual answers about whether or not Washington leeches fans from Baltimore.

2004 Orioles
avg: 34 300 pct capacity : 70.3

2005 Orioles
avg: 29 143 pct capacity : 60.5

2005 Nationals
avg: 30 672 pct capacity : 54.1

Of course, the low pct capacity for the Nats is misleading because they play in a football stadium. Also, the 2004 number is for the full season, and avg attendance should rise during the summer. This could help explain the lower Orioles attendance. Overall, it certainly helps that both teams are competitive, but for all intents and purposes, baseball attendance in Baltimore-Washington has doubled.

Fuck one Angelos.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

damn, cabrera looked good. he was still hitting 97 in the seventh, too.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

apparently, he was hitting one hunnit earlier in the game.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

But by those numbers, if they stay steady, Angelos has an argument - with a better team and good weather he's drawing fewer fans now that the Expos are in term. Whether that's a good reason for the MLB to buy him off or not is another question, but he does have an argument about attendance woes.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

The O's attendance, like the Blue Jays attendance, has dwindled over the years due to a) the novelty of the new ballpark wearing off, b) the team slipping from perennial contenders into mediocity and in certain years, downright crappiness. It took a long time for the team's woes to reflect in the O's attendance -- even the 98-loss team from 2001 drew 38K a game, 7th in the majors. That is, the O's were "overdrawing" based on the talent they had and their committment to winning (=zero, because they were rebuilding). Thus, the small decrease in avg. attendance thus far in 2005 is partly a natural progression -- the fan base has been decaying over a period of many years, which has nothing to do with the Nats, and that fan base isn't going to come running back just because they've been playing well for a month (not to mention that the core of the team is the same as last year).

Now, with a competitive team for the first time since 1997, they should slowly bring back the fans they lost. The 29K number will go up over the summer, regardless of the quality of the team, because baseball is a summer game. When all is said and done, Angelos can *maybe* claim a 5-10% reduction in attendance.

But all this number crunching is a bit dubious because Angelos is a fuckwit who is infamously trying to monopolize the broadcasting rights in the area, so who knows what affect that is having on frustrated fans, advertising, public opinion of the Orioles, etc. (jqh, comments?)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

When all is said and done, Angelos can *maybe* claim a 5-10% reduction in attendance.

And even so, if the Nats attendance figures hold up over the season, then overall interest and attendance in the Balt-Wash area will have skyrocketed. So it will be abundantly clear that they can support two teams, contrary to what Angelos wants/thinks, which was my central point.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

anti-angelos sentiment is HUGE in dc. there are a lot of people that while they still love the o's refuse to spend another dime on merch or tix as long as angelos owns the club. boswell has been a constant thorn in angelos's side to the point that he took out a full page ad in the sunday post a few weeks back whining that the post was distorting the true picture of things and he is really just an innocent party. to say that this strategy would be a mild understatement.

besides, i don't think that anyone has ever claimed that the nats would have NO impact on o's attendance and what irks me most is petey-pete's unfounded claim on TWO multi-state market areas.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

there's already talk emanating from b'more that the o's may try and make a move for cameron given the injuries to matos & sosa.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

That would be a great move for the O's, in every possible way - hopefully, Minaya's experience in getting bilked by other teams (hello Bartolo Colon trade!) has taught him how to bilk back. Honestly, tho, I don't know if the Mets should make that move (unless the Cam / Mets relationship is toxic on the level of Nomah / Sox) unless they get a REALLY good offer.

JQ - what's the consensus in Crabtown on Mazilli? He strikes me as an unimaginative by-the-book received-knowledge type of guy (w/ more than a hint of Torre's scorched-earth bullpen usage tendencies).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

end of last year and beginning of this year have a gone a long way in cleaning up his tarnished image, but that only goes so far. especially b/c he's not only an outsider, but a yank!

i definitely have questions on how the bullpen is being used...where's john parrish? rick bauer? steve reed? the b'more press has been pretty complimentary on his lineup tinkering, though.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Well, you really can't go wrong w/ the folks he's got in there. It goes something like this, right?

2B Roberts
3B Mora
SS Tejada
RF Sosa
C Lopez
1B Viagkra
DH TK
LF TK
CF Matos

Or is Lopez hitting 4th? He probably should, esp. since he's a better hitter (right now) that Sammy is. Esp. now that Sammy's on the DL (ho ho ho).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

yeah, even role players are stroking it. geronimo gil has done admirably in limited appearances and chris gomez has done well, too.

i am definitely curious to see what they do w/ sammy & matos dl'd.

keith reed is coming up and he's kind of "eh", but i think now would be a great time to FREE WALTER YOUNG!

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

They're spotstarting Newhan, too, I hope!

To FREE WALTER YOUNG, they need to FREE RAFAEL PALMEIRO AND HIS WILLY.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

i would imagine the outfield will be newhan, bigbie & gibbons w/ newhan probably rotating to rf and gibbons keeping up some dh duties.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

wow, so in addition to jobbers keith reed and sal fasano, the o's brought up jeff fiorentino.

(rick bauer was also sent down to AAA)

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

wow (pt. ii)

ponson has only thrown 95 pitches through 8IP.

johan santana 98 through 6IP + 9H/4ER, but only 1BB and 8K.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

splitsville w/ the sox, eh? i can deal w/ that result and also now that the lead in every game streak is broken, we have one less thing for the bbtn crew to harp on.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Sunday, 15 May 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

And even so, if the Nats attendance figures hold up over the season, then overall interest and attendance in the Balt-Wash area will have skyrocketed. So it will be abundantly clear that they can support two teams, contrary to what Angelos wants/thinks, which was my central point.

Uh, Angelos' argument isn't "DC/Baltimore can't support two teams." It's "DC/Baltimore can't support two teams without hurting my attendance and bottom line." Which is true, as the attendance figures thus far bear out.

You're reading his argument literally - an attempt to be logical and reasoned and taking the best interests of baseball and both franchises into account. When we read it purely in terms of self-interest, everything he's argued has been self-evident - the Nationals were going to hurt his bottom line by their existence. Whether they were going to make a meaningful impact is another question (as is whether baseball should have caved), but one that a good capitalist like Angelos didn't care about - fact was, they were going to hurt and he had to say and do anything he could to blunt the impact.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 15 May 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Bedard with 7 IP, 0 ER, 5 hits and 7 K. His ERA is down to 2.08.
I really want to beleive he can keep this up all season - but I really don't think it possible.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 22 May 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Milo -- you didn't pay attention to anything I said.

First of all, if Angelos is trying to monopolize the TV rights in his favour then he's going to make more money (not to mention the fact that he owns 1/29th of the Nats).

Second, you're assuming that the (very small) drop in Orioles attendance is solely due to the Nats, and not due to dwindling interest in the team.

Third, the Orioles attendance will go up as the year goes on, as it does for nearly all teams as the weather improves.

Fourth, you're assuming that "attendance" = "the bottom line" and that attendance is an accurate indicator of how well a team is faring financially. Obv. money from TV, merch, liscencing >> money from ticket sales.

Fifth, the pool of baseball fans is not finite. More people in the Bmore/Wash area are interested in the game. Total interest in baseball (judging from ticket sales, although I don't know what the TV ratings are, but if you do, feel free to make a counterargument based on that) has doubled in the area -- how can that not be good for the long-term health of the Nats AND the O's?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 22 May 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

First of all, if Angelos is trying to monopolize the TV rights in his favour then he's going to make more money (not to mention the fact that he owns 1/29th of the Nats).
The ability to monopolize the rights is a big reason he made an issue out of this.

Second, you're assuming that the (very small) drop in Orioles attendance is solely due to the Nats, and not due to dwindling interest in the team.
Yes, I'm assuming that the drop in attendance of ~5,000 per night - with a better, more competitive team and decent weather - might have something to do with the Nats. If the O's had been in last place all season, you'd have an argument here - but they haven't been.

Third, the Orioles attendance will go up as the year goes on, as it does for nearly all teams as the weather improves.
That's an assumption that we have no evidence for thus far. As I've said all along, if the numbers hold steady, Angelos' argument was correct.

Fourth, you're assuming that "attendance" = "the bottom line" and that attendance is an accurate indicator of how well a team is faring financially. Obv. money from TV, merch, liscencing >> money from ticket sales
"Money from ticket sales" still equals "money" which equals "a team's bottom line."

Again, quoting my last sentence: "Whether they were going to make a meaningful impact is another question (as is whether baseball should have caved), but one that a good capitalist like Angelos didn't care about - fact was, they were going to hurt and he had to say and do anything he could to blunt the impact."

As to the last - it's not about the 'long-term health' of anything (as I said). You keep trying to view Angelos's arguments as rational and balanced and whatever. They aren't. They're purely self-serving in the short-term. "Nats hurt attendance, that's going to lose me money, I need something to help out."

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 22 May 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Notice that you (and/or Angelos) also arguing that teams located near *any other* team are hurting each others' bottom line. By that logic, if the Mets weren't in New York, then the Yankees would be making more money without the competition. So the next time Yankee Stadium isn't full, and 30 000 people are in Shea to watch the Mets, I guess we know who to blame.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 22 May 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Actually, the argument would be 'new teams moving into an established franchise's market hurt the established team's bottom line.'

Which is one of the reasons you don't see new expansion teams going to an established market most of the time. You don't get a new NL team in Detroit, for instance.

And to repeat myself, again, I'm not arguing the impact is meaningful, or that Angelos deserves to get his concessions or that the market can't support two teams or that any franchise deserves monopoly rights: simply that Angelos's arguments, phrasing them the way he has, are correct. Rather than trying to argue that a new team down the road won't impact Angelos financially, a more sound reasoning is to attack the degree to which he'll be hurt.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 22 May 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

well, i'm no fnacy big city lawyer, but i've read plenty of articles on the matter from the post and the sun, and from what i gather, it's never really been an argument about no imact v. some impact, but some impact v. vastly overstated impact. angelos/the o's franchise NEVER had explicit territorial or broadcast rights over two distinct markets.

All this talk re: "oh the O's only need one more starter" is hogwash. They need to ease off the MUST CONTEND NOW gas, keep on developing their pitching staff, cut it out w/ the ineffectual bullpen headcases (cf. Senor Kline), let the old parts slough off, and keep on keeping on.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

well, i don't think they need JUST one more starter, but i think they could contend this year w/ minimal improvement, but i agree, the question is at what cost?

i still don't like the bautista trade and talk of dealing penn or maine is disturbing.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

Exactly! It's not worth mortgaging the future success of the franchise for making a damn-the-torpedoes run at the division this year, especially when the team they currently have is the reason they're making the run. Tejada & Mora & Roberts (regardless of this year's wacky performance) are the team's core, and they're going to be around for a few more years. Javy (either as catcher, or maybe DH if he keeps on getting donged) is fine as long as he keeps in shape, Matos is solid (when healthy) esp. in light of their IF production, and the quality / hi-upside guys on their pitching staff (Bedard, Bautista, Ryan?) are so damn young. If they do a little Sox-like scrounging to pick up their Millar or their Mueller or their Bellhorn to replace the aging birds (Surhoff, Palmeiro, Sosa, etc.), then they're good to make a legit run. (Obviously, if I'm forgetting something, ding me.)

It hasn't been SAID outright, but I'm assuming that the talk about the Orioles making moves NOW has plenty to do w/ the superb performance (at the time) of the pitching staff, and w/ Bedard (still?) on the DL, a lot of that wuv was (rightfully) Chen's for the taking. SiPo has been Alpo (har har), Cabrera is all over the place, Lopez is solid, but the fact that Chen's the staff ERA leader even after his last start says volumes about his performance to date (on many levels). http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2114944

The Baltimore Orioles on Saturday have agreed to trade right-handed pitcher Sidney Ponson to San Diego for first baseman Phil Nevin.

Buster Olney reports that Nevin has a limited no-trade clause and he hasn't approved the deal yet. The Orioles are on the list of teams he does not want to be traded to.

With Ponson moving to the Padres, the Orioles deal to acquire Florida Marlins right-hander A.J. Burnett has been shelved.

A three-way deal with the Orioles and Texas Rangers, which would have sent Burnett to Baltimore, was "killed" by the Orioles this weekend, according to a baseball man familiar with the deal, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reported. So the Marlins are believed to have broken off talks with Baltimore, at least for now, and are back to focusing on offers by the Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Saturday, 23 July 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

um, don't the orioles already have too many first basemen?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 23 July 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

No, they really just have too much Ponson.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 23 July 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Ponson has too much Ponson.

And that, my friends, concludes the "fat jokes" portion of this thread for 2005.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 23 July 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Nevin is real good for like 20 games a year, when he isn't on the DL. I won't miss him.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 24 July 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

i think this is classic addition by subtraction. palmeiro is probably going to retire before next year, this is probably all she wrote on surhoff, too.

wapo is reporting that nevin actually seems pretty amenable to the deal and could be in uni tomorrow night.

i predict that the o's will acquire los angeles's favorite taco merchant/consumer.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

So the word is Palmeiro is going to sign off at the end of this year? I figured they would have to take his bat out of his cold dead hands.

I wouldn't be suprised if Phil Nevin ends up killing this deal. He has killed a couple of other mid season trades in the past few years, one to Cinci for the Grif and I think one to maybe the Angels or Rangers.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

well, the article in the post suggested otherwise. his agent even said he was suprised nevin didn't reject it out of hand. apparently chris gomez has a future as a front office operative.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

It may be different this time for Nevin, as I think the Padres have told him if he sticks around he will be riding the pine with Nady getting most of the playing time at first.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Pardon my ignorance, but why have the O's been so desperate for a new third baseman? Is Mora's natural position at third or in the OF?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Are the O's desperate for a 3B? If you're talking about Nevin: I'm guessing he'll be in the OF or 1B - his defense at 3B, from what I remember, is Zeile-esque. Mora came up w/ the Mets as a middle infielder, I thought, and a sure-handed one as well - last year's boot-fest was the exception, not the rule, right?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

well, i don't think they've been so desperate for a new 3rd baseman as much as they've been looking for another big bat. i mean, i think lowell is pretty much the reason they've backed off burnett and i know they've asked about dunn and kearns, but apparently the reds are talking crazy about what they want in return.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Nice to see the Reds are taking negotiation lessons from Chuck LaMar! But at least the high cost can be justified w/ regards to Dunn & Kearns. Note to Reds: RELEASE SEAN CASEY!

they better not take away any ABs from Palmeiro, considering the fact that he's been damn good this year.

gear (gear), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

actually, it looks like gibbons would be the one getting screwed in this deal. the story goes that nevin would play pretty much every day either first or dh. i imagine the same goes for raffy and sosa, as well.

DOUBLE VISION OH NO!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Sean Casey is the albatross of the Reds, if he played second, he would be a decent hitter. They signed him up a millinia ago when he seemed like he could hit for power for an eon and they can't unload him for a pizza and a six pack of cheap brew. The Reds I think are trying to justify keeping him around as veteran leadership or something which is why they extended him to 2006. Why they did this when they could play either Dunn or The Griff at first, I have no idea, just like the Red front office.

Sammy wouldn't be a bad hitter to have going six or seven in a lineup, but the guy pouts like an eight year old with his Gameboy taken away when he feels slighted.

As bad as some of the deals the O's have done in the past ten years, one thing is for sure they did right signing Tejada.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

i will say, if sosa is being a baby about gettign shifted around this year in the lineup and b/w dh & the field, the o's are doing a whale of a job keeping it under wraps. his public comments have been all smiles and sunshine and a lot of folks attribute hsi change in attitude to tejada. we'll see, though.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Sammy can't really pout too much with his numbers, though. I hope he is coming around, because I think he got a bad rap on the way out of Chicago for a couple of relatively minor incidents ('he's gone! now things are gonna be cleaned-up...'), when any "blame" should have fallen on the shoulders of the entire organization, not least of all Dusty and Hendry.

gear (gear), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

"A team source said that the Orioles are not only committed to improving the top of their rotation, they are dissatisfied with both the offensive and defensive production of their outfield. None of their starting outfielders, Larry Bigbie, Luis Matos and Sammy Sosa, is hitting above .271. And the three have combined for 20 home runs and 74 RBIs.

"The infield is carrying the outfield right now, which is ridiculous," the team source said."

Morbs - MARC Camden line drops off at Camden station a block away from Camden Yards. I think it's a $7 one-way fare, although I could be mistaken.

Regular MARC train service is available for weekday Oriole games at Camden Yards. The MTA 701 Express Bus operates 20 minutes after the last out of the ball game to Savage, Greenbelt & Union Station. A valid MARC ticket to the appropriate station is accepted for the return trip. In the absence of a MARC ticket, the cash fare is $10.

On Saturday, Sunday & Holidays, there is no train service. The MTA 703 Bus leaves the Metro Greenbelt Station for Camden Yards 2 hours, 90 minutes & 1 hour before game time. Buses return to Greenbelt 20 minutes after the last out. The fare is $6 each way.

I've gotta believe Palmeiro's gonna just quietly retire at the end of this year, right?

gear (gear), Thursday, 1 September 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

i would imagine.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 2 September 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

from BP's Will Carroll:

Sammy Sosa may have played his last game in Baltimore and, just maybe, his last in the U.S. Multiple sources believe that Sosa will head to Japan next season for a retirement-fund contract and a chance to hit as many home runs as Tuffy Rhodes, his former Cub teammate, did.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 9 September 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

brian roberts just got his arm torn off. bad scene. feel bad for the dude, and it was a really nasty looking injury, to boot. roberts seemed almost in shock...

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

what happened?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

bubba crosby bunts. surhoff charges and throws to first, where roberts is covering. throw is offline, roberts reaches for it and crosby nails it. replays showed his arm bending backward the wrong way. roberts collapses, not even able to move the live ball sitting right in front of him as bernie williams scores. trainer runs out and roberts is fighting off tears. won't even let the trainer take off his glove. nasty stuff.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

nails HIS ARM that should say

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

Too bad it wasn't A-Rod.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

with the feeble wrist slap that is...

must have been a controversial play:

BALTIMORE'S BRIAN ROBERTS HAS LEFT THE GAME IN THE BOTTOM OF THE SECOND INNING WITH A LEFT ELBOW INJURY.

BALTIMORE MANAGER SAM PERLOZZO HAS BEEN EJECTED BY HOME PLATE UMPIRE SAM HOLBROOK IN THE SECOND INNING FOR ARGUING A PLAY AT FIRST BASE.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

it was unclear what he was arguing. you could read the ump's lips at one point, and he yelled, "what can i do about it?" maybe it was about the wire.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

ugh. 'dislocated elbow', which i don't want to think about too hard

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

Awesome.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 23 September 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

I don't ask for much. Just a respectable effort. Just don't roll over for, say, FOUR STRAIGHT GAMES.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 23 September 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

anyone with times select wanna tell me what this is about?

two weeks pass...
ao, allegedly sam perlozzo and leo mazzone are old buddies from western md and perlozzo is making a big push to bring mazzone to b'more.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 14 October 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

from a new piece in the sun about the great unravelling:

"Standing nearby was Sosa, who, according to one player, had grown tired of Tejada's constant dugout chatter and told the shortstop as much. Both players later denied the rift, but Hendricks and several other players confirmed it. Tejada was much quieter after Sosa rebuked him, the players said.

Palmeiro and Ponson were also in the clubhouse that night in Oakland.

Palmeiro had recently returned from his 10-day suspension to a clubhouse reception more dubious than publicly alleged. Several players did not even get off their cell phones to speak to him when he tried to shake hands upon returning. A clubhouse loner to begin with, he was now an island.

And Ponson, who would soon face his second drunken-driving charge in seven months, had already turned off teammates. On the day after his final arrest weeks later, as word of it filtered through the clubhouse, many players frowned and shook their heads, no longer surprised at any news involving Ponson.

Running the team that night in Oakland was an interim manager, Sam Perlozzo, who had replaced Mazzilli in early August and had no idea if he would be retained for next year. (He was given a three-year contract last week.)

Mazzilli's firing on Aug. 4 delighted many players. They had long before become disenchanted with the second-year manager.

"Pretty much everybody was unhappy with him," one player later said."

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 17 October 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

is this team going to recover? they seem to have the parts for it, if the pitching matures.

the second half of their season was as thorough a collapse, in every way, as any i can recall in sport. about the only plus is that they didn't trade cabrera for a.j. burnett.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

I think they need pitching, but I don't think AJ Burnett is the solution. Burnett is going to get ace money somewhere, which is silly because he's a three at best, so far. I think I might give him 8 million per, four years. Someone is going to give him a lot more than that.

But there are always plenty of lesser light guys that become available, guys who can make a big difference. Last year, it was pitchers like Loiaza, El Duque, Paul Byrd, Glendon Rusch, etc.

This year, guys like Joe Mays, Tomko, Moyer could potentially help give starting pitcher depth, and won't cost nearly as much. I'm not saying this will bring the Orioles to the playoffs, but these are the kind of guys that the Orioles haven't even bothered to acquire in the previous few years. They seem to have been using a pitching-from-within philosophy that I'm not sure can work in a division with Toronto, the Yankees and the Sox in it.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

Leo Mazzone, anyone?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Fuck.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

that's what i'm talking about.

i am a happy camper. the fact that the yanks were gunning for him is icing on the cake.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 20 October 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Fuck is right! As if the division wasn't competitive enough already!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 20 October 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

d'oh!

braves are asking for a prospect in exchange for releasing mazzone prior to the end date of his contract.

bastards!

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 20 October 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Maybe he'll help the O's more than Rick Peterson helped the Mets.
