Inspired by this, it has been suggested that we start a blog written by the Baseball Tonight crew. I've created baseballtonight.blogspot.com, and if you are interested in contributing, I can send you an invite to join.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yanc3, I'd most definitely like an invite (but send it to dav3r@popsh0ts.0rg, as that's the addy for my Blogger account).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

ignore that invite, david. i wanna create one where i can post under something other than my real name. or is there a way to change the "posted by" for each member?

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG. Greatest. Idea. Ever.
Invite. Please.

(problem: I don't get ESPN. I get the Sunday night game, and I do read the internet columns by Krukkie et al. Fortunately, R0D BL4CK is handling the PBP for Blue Jays games on Rogers Sportsnet, so he might crash the ESPN party -- youneverknow)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure if this falls into Beyond Parody. Like when Mystery Science Theater added their japes to an Ed Wood film...

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

well i sent you an invite regardless, morbs

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, thanks. If I can bear to watch the show any more, I'll work on my "Ravvy." Gammons was on for the full hour at 10 (saying his share of palaver too -- did you know Tejada makes his teammates better?); I wonder how often he suppresses vomit next to Krunk & HR.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I was a dumbass and accepted the invite to my regular blogger account. Once I figure out which name I'll post under, I'll probably need another invite.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yanc3, I think you can modify the template to remove the user's Blogger name, and we can just post pics of who we be before the post.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, that would work. Then we can manually add the html for the poster's name at the end of our posts.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yep, i'm fixing it

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

how's this look?

http://baseballtonight.blogspot.com/

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

hang on, i'm gonna kill it and start over one more time. this is annoying to have two different blogger accounts going, and i've finally figured out a fix. apologies.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, Yanc3 - are you directly linking the pics from ESPIN? If so, I can copy & paste the pertinent portraits into a directory on my site, so we don't have to worry about ESPIN getting cheesed off.

Also, what was that 1st post supposed to be? I don't see it.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm downloading the pics and uploading them to flickr. and you don't see that pic in the first post? it works for me...

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh! I can't see flickr pics from my w0rk PC, that's why. S'all good.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't wait to start writing gammons columns quoting pearl jam and dropkick murphys!

I don't know if he's ever on BBTN, but I'm only qualified to impersonate Steve Stone. Annoyingly predictive but surprisingly prescient, never hesitates to pull out the photo of Santo with a plate of spaghetti and a baseball.

Oh, come on Theo, WHY THE HAT?

I'm thinking JIM THOM might have to make an appearance or 20. Hell - he can do his Sandbergian POWER RANK INDEX every week! How's about it?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

that would be AWESOME, dave!

and once anyone joins, start posting!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

and the phils should be #1 every week, of course

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

LARRY BOWA MADE ME CRY

I'm thinking JIM might have to tone down the CAPS LOCK, tho, as it'd get really annoying over the course of an entire post.

ITS REALLY FUN TO TYPE LIKE THAT THO

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this thing gonna need a disclaimer, or is it hoping too much that the need for a disclaimer would be necessary?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Did BBTN have Rob Dibble shot?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

He was canned! He's on XM Radio now, I think.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmmm, radio ... where conveniently there are no visuals. I'm seeing potential for running veiled references to Dibble murder plot ... xpost

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The speedy Reynolds was a defensive stalwart with excellent range. In 1987 he led AL second basemen in games started, total chances, putouts, assists, and double plays. The switch-hitter steadily improved his batting average and, until 1996, held the Mariner record for fewest strikeouts (34) by a batter with at least 530 plate appearances...Book Harold Reynolds for Your Event

Reynolds stole a club-record 60 bases in 1987, becoming the first Mariner to lead the AL in a major offensive category and the first player ever to lead the league in steals while batting ninth in the order. But in 1988, he lost his stolen-base touch, getting caught 29 times while stealing 35.

That year Reynolds became the first player to represent the Mariners in the All-Star Game more than once. He also won a Gold Glove, despite leading AL second basemen in errors, because he also led in assists and double plays. Perennial honoree Frank White was livid at the selection, putting Reynolds in an uncomfortable position. "I was totally shocked to win the Gold Glove," Reynolds admitted. "But what am I supposed to do? Give it back?"

Reynolds retired after the 1994 season and later became an analyst for ESPN. His brother Don played briefly for San Diego in 1978 and 1979.

Jimmy Mod Knows You Eat Your Own Farts (ModJ), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The Kornheiser should start with a lead in about baseball and then just be a review of some stupid TV show. I sometimes wonder if Kornheiser even likes sports.

btw, the numbers today are pretty great! 700 visitors, 1500 page loads. (most of em prolly us, but hey!)

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 28 April 2005 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

who should be the fantasy advice columnist?

They should get somebody from outside the BBTN family ... like ROB NEYER.

Imagine the intra-blog schoolyard bullying from Krukker and HR! The rebuttal columns! Not to mention that we'd all be lining up to be the first one to post as Neyer.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 28 April 2005 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You gots it. Channeling BV with Vin Scully in one ear and the usual newsroom clusterfuck in the other is no easy task. Good fun, though. Who's going to do one of those mechanics lessons with Harold Reynolds? That's one segment of the show I always enjoy.

Oh wow, I had a bad thought - Larry Bowa doing an "Ask Isadora" column. Godspeed if you embark on this quest.

[xpost]

Yanc3, you are the Frank Sinatra to my Joey Bishop. Praise be to you. (though, really, ball burning is so gauche.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

my final suggestion for the day is that indie-guilt berman makes an appearance.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha holy shit who wrote that Rickey Henderson piece?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Rickey did!

(I have no idea - I think it was The Muses.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I did Rickey. My Jason Varitek-like sleep patterns in action, clearly.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

George Will, delayed one day by the Bush press conference, has arrived to opine on the nation's passtime.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

George Will is just GOLD. Well done.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks man; and i gotta say the Dave Roberts bit had me rolling.

who did THE PUD?

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I started a Fantasy Baseball piece with Pedro and Glavine as the guest advice columnists, but the creative muse isn't hitting me right now. My angle is Pedro="I AM BETTER THAN ALL THESE PLAYERS" and Glavine="I work HARDER than everyone and we are ALL underpaid by the MAN and I like to use BIG words". If anyone wants to continue the piece, go ahead, otherwise, I will try to finish it at a later time.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

congrats all, this is still rising in hilarity.

scrimshaw (scrimshaw1837), Friday, 29 April 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 29 April 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, a comment for Joe Morgan's RBI analysis (filed under "Fiction Is Like Truth, Only Fake"):

"Joe, the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote is "Foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds." It's a derogatory comment implying that being consistent for the sake of consistency is stupid. Here's another quote "There are lies, damned lies, and statistics." Simply changing context of A-Rod's RBI count to suit your argument is a strawman. Maybe the blame should be laid to the batters in front of A-Rod for those ten games. If they simply got on base more often (as in the two games you are choosing to exclude) then his RBI total would be higher yet. I commend your efforts to think outside the box and offer analysis beyond conventional thinking but distorting statistical context to support a weak position does not cut it."

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 29 April 2005 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, TOO SUBTLE

Lemme just say that that Larry Bowa column made me eat my own liver in order to keep from L'ing OL. As a vegan, that pisses me off. As a human, da da da da da I'm lovin' it.

Holy shit, BLEEP BLEEP.

Read this and then read, like, Page 2. There's no contest. Some of the funniest baseball writing I've ever seen has been posted in the last three days.

This is so obviously the takeover that it isn't even funny. We need to keep this going.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Friday, 29 April 2005 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

7,000 visitors, 15,000 page loads today. the phrase? holy shit.

Yeah, getting linked by Baseball Musings will definitely up the visitor total. & holy shit - that last link has the PERFECT LB question (or perfect question for anyone willing to take it awn): "MY WIFE'S GIRLFRIEND: This chick has the perfect ass. Good Grief.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 2 May 2005 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I have an idea but no time today. It involves The Kruk or Joe Morgan breaking down what it takes to stop Brian Roberts and Derrek Lee. He concludes that the only way to stop them is to bean them until they cool down, as is written in the unwritten code of baseball rules.

You can't just walk them, you've got to let them know you know they're hot and bean them to disrupt their rhythm and chemistry at the plate.

Yeah, Ravech is tough. On the same note, I was thinking of doing Pedro Gomez, before I realized that writing 800 words of Pedro Gomez would involve a lot of thoughts like "Barry Bonds ate a turkey sandwich today; our sources say that the high levels of niacin and phosphorus in dark meat can contribute favorably to joint health. No word on how this affects the timetable for his comeback, Kenny."

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i think a funny commentary for one of the bbtn talking heads would be a "what's ailing new york?" piece on how the yankees are a team w/ no heart and the mets a team w/ no soul (i.e. the yanks have a lot of character guys, but no will to win & the mets have a good mix of youngsters and gamers, but no chemistry).

Metropolitans versus the Atlanta Native Americans. 1st inning: Jose Reyes walks. (Yes, I know.) Kaz Matsui singles to left field, with Young Reyes going to second. Carlos Beltran is up. The chances of scoring a run with runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs are 85%. Carlos Beltran is one of the 10 best hitters in the ... IT'S A BUNT! Beltran squares around on the first pitch, and bunts the ball straight to the pitcher. Runners advance, Beltran out at first, one out. Cliff Floyd swings at the first pitch and pops up to the shortstop. Doug Mientkiewitz fights off a few two-strike pitches, but grounds meekly to the 1st basemen to end the inning. 1 hit, 1 miracle, 2 left on base, 0 runs.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Monday, 2 May 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Was my post really that hard to follow? :(

Organized Crime (Leee), Monday, 2 May 2005 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i was just having a hard time discerning the race component, leeee, other than barry bonds being proud of being black.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 2 May 2005 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

That Williams picture ... damn.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG, "HAUNCHES"

Curious George (Bat Chain Puller) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

SERENA HAUNCHES V. BARRY'S KNEE V. TO'S ANKLE ROUNDTABLE

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

TO = Terrell Owens, not Saguchi, right?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, yeah

also NOMAR'S GROIN

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

No doubt Nomar's groin would have a lot to talk about w/ Serena's meaty shanks. And then Barry's knee can intervene.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

for matters of editorial clarity, it's marat safin...or is that part of the joke and if so, i don't get it.

who's writing a post on how moneyball is to blame for the spate of groin injuries in the league this year?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the yanks analysis should be by the around the horn crew.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

How appropriate. There's no NY beat reporter on ATH, tho, is there?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

no. it should be woody paige, that douchebag from the sun-times, bob ryan and maybe a stephen a smith curveball.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

HOLY SHIT - I just G00gled "sun-times douchebag" for guffaws & the FIRST RESULT was Jay Mariotti's Sun-Times page!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahaha!

does anyone know anybody at the dugout? they should be invited to contribute.

and someone from the red sox has been reading our blog.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

WE LOVE YOU CURT GET WELL SOON

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Mariotti would be easy enough ... just insert lots of "heres", as in "What you got here Tony is the fact that Randy Johnson here just can't get a handle on his fastball here. I TOLD YOU THIS WOULD HAPPEN HERE BACK IN 2002."

Paige: "You guuuys don't know WHAT you're talking about, look at the schedule ..." etc

Ryan: "Remember that whole Boston busing race-riot business? This is like that, but I'M probably the only person OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER"

x-post HI DERE THEO

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

All right, it's a slow day at work. I'm going to do TMQ, if nobody else has started working on it. It might take a while, but I have a fucking great haiku ready.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Go w/ Brookings, my son. And, hey, if you can get "Gregg" to give his friend & colleague Bill Simmons a long-overdue shout-out, make it so!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

do it daniel! i've been trying to come up with clever nicknames for teams (a la squared 7s, etc) but have struck out. STOP ME BEFORE I BUNT AGAIN is genius, of course.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i've been considering writing a column about the l word as simmons.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, funny names might have to come later tonight once I have a little more research time. Arizona (CAUTION: MAY CONTAIN BASEBALL-LIKE SUBSTANCE) Diamondbacks is an obvious must-have, though.

i also tried to make this one a header:

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Was my post really that hard to follow? :(

Wasn't it Barry's fault for running his mouth and turning Bonds vs Ruth into a race issue? Leeee's post is making fun of that, or at least that's what I thought.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG the new header is amazing

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

TMQ is in the house. I got really productive today, largely shunning my actual job along the way.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks! i'm trying to change the color scheme on the rest of the page. basically, i want it to be all white, i think. are yall okay with how it is now?

GREAT JOB ON TMQ. I'm gonna make a few edits, though -- Byrnes for Chavez, etc. What are those ? marks before the haiku?

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I just have to say again, Daniel, that is AMAZING. Best post so far, no question.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, Byrnes, duh. Sorry; I'm running out the door to catch a train, and I was alt-tabbing back and forth all day.

No idea how that's formatted in other browsers. It looks okay in Safari, but Blogger can be finicky about converting line breaks. Thanks for fixing whatever's broken.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

meanwhile, we have had 10 posts today! well done everyone! and nice job on the morgan, barry.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I cried all over the inside of my glasses reading the Thome post.

Curious George (Bat Chain Puller) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

the other thing i want to do -- and might do tonight -- is use the sidebar to create an author archive of sorts for each personality. i.e. the bowa posts grouped together, etc. as more and more posts go up, it'll be harder to look through the old ones, and i think that could counteract that.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I also edited the name of *Marat* Safin in the second Wilbon post.

The brilliance of that post (part of it, anyhow) is that, IIRC, that's the same pic of Serena that they use when talking about her hottttness on PTI. I couldn't find the corresponding pic of Safin's GF, although the ones I found are still pretty good.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

alright, masthead is made. looks good i think. other order of business: redoing the links. i took em down cuz i thought they were dull, but i'd like to come up a clever list. nominate away!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 2 May 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

wrt author archives - fantastic idea, yance. what does blogger/blogspot offer in the way of contextual metadata? it seems like the easiest way to do it with a movable type/drupal/wordpress-style cms would be to tag each post with author-specific keywords and set up category-based archives. i don't know a whole lot about managing blogspot blogs, although it doesn't seem very hard.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 2 May 2005 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

unfortunately i don't believe blogger offers that. so i'll just keep up with it.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 2 May 2005 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why, but "Barry Bonds," "Barry Bonds' Knee Fluid" in the author list has me giggling.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 2 May 2005 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Alright gang, Jose Canseco has stopped by with some thoughts on keeping your financial affairs in order.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Monday, 2 May 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll check in with HR teaching everyone how to properly chew seeds, in light of the recent seed shortage.

scrimshaw (scrimshaw1837), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW, that TMQ is OTM as fuck.

scrimshaw (scrimshaw1837), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, i just came to by to say again that after re-reading the tmq post i am completely in awe. so fucking good.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, bless - my Mets anecdote made it into TMQ intact! Tho, really, I was lying when I mentioned that Reyes walked - he hasn't done it yet!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I'm gonna post here every couple days to egg you motherfuckers on, b/c this is all amazing. And that TMQ is absoultely perfect.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed re: TMQ's brilliance, and the paragraph about Byrnes managed to be not only hysterically funny but also totally OTM.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

daniel I hate you,
way to wreck my Ravech "post"
with yr brilliance

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

You need the little insider graphic next to Neyer's articles in the masthead

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

true dat! someone with Internets skillz get on that! cause there are gonna be a lot of those. I'm thinking Neyer porn....

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Ravech, Canseco, and Morgan have me rolling. Fantastic work.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I have no idea who/what TMQ is. And I assume the Wilbon guy is Kornheiser's Alan Colmes?

I think I won't be able to do this stuff because ESPN bloviating just makes me blindly contemptuous rather than bemused.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

TMQ = Gregg Easterbook, former E$PN (& current NFL.com) columnist, famous for A) beigng "a senior editor of The New Republic, a contributing editor of The Atlantic Monthly and a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution", B) loving the haikus, C) loving the cheerleaders and, most importantly, D) hating the blitzes.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

TMQ = Tuesday Morning Quarterback, BTW.

BTW = by the way, BTW.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, so last night i was listening to the phils-mets game, and when beltran came up with matsui and reyes on 1st and 2nd (except i think reyes singles, and matsui walked), all i could think was "it would be really funny if beltran DID bunt in this situation." but then beltran went yard.

the leglo (the leglo), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The Yankee & Red Sox "woes" TOTALLY need to be raked over the coals!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

what would steinbrenner's fantasy team name be?

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The Pussy Toadies? (That's "pussy" as in "full of pus".)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The Yankee Shippers? Vader's Raiders?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

GEORGE STEINBRENNER'S FANTASY TEAM is what he would call it. Or THE WINNERS.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Monument Pork?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

inspired by the "Rock Neck" thread on ILE, Danny Graves talks about "Homer Neck"

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha - I might take MONUMENT PORK as my fantasy team name!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Point taken, Larry!" is my
brand-new fave catchphrase

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

the homer neck post is great.

one thing i've been thinking about: personal diaries by all the bbtn on-air "talent" describing a day preparing for the show, drinks afterwards, etc. could be comedy gold.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

yanc4 -- and everyone -- i have a whole character arc thing for ravvy involving being hazed by the "real" players/managers. feel free to drop stuff in about that. ravvy's gonna go OFF on some mofos...except fail miserably.

also: rally undies.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, the diary idea could be fantastic. nothing like a peek behind the scenes! we could bring in that therapist from the metallica movie to consult on cast chemistry; kruk accidentally using dan patrick's "private" bathroom, etc.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I phear I did Curt a grave disservice. Assuade my phears (& soothe my savage ego)!

BTW - nice Hawk post (yyyyyyyyyyES!), but there's some goofy tag problems going down around the image. I'll go in & fix it! Ahoyhoy!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

For the record, I'm going to refrain from doing much boosterizing on this thread, as it can be safely assumed that I, like Haikunym, & the Timberlake, am lovin' it. Also, it gives me more time to be stoopid on the blog - bonus!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Left column is page views, right is visitors.

We've jumped the shark already. :(

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Today's ideas:

- Aforementioned hyper-analytical Pedro Gomez post
- "Tony Womack, Left Fielder," done in the style of a 1940's radio play ("Who knows what evil lurks behind the Kodak sign?" etc.)
- Political commentary from Mike Piazza (I'm thinking an impassioned critique of the filibuster)
- J0hn D4hlem's Yankee Baseball (a tiny glimmer in my eye, but what a glimmer it is.)

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Also when you guys get bored, people from NBA Shootaround could start trying to infiltrate the blog out of jealousy. Anyway, you've provided both chuckles and tears. As in, I've been in tears reading some of the entries.

Nym, also, those non-Angell pictures - I thank you much.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, David -- I'm embarking on a Stuart Murdoch travelogue, where he follows the Mets around on a road trip and writes it up in full B&S lyrical-style glory, with plenty of fawning bits about Piazza and Stuart struggling with the idea of whether it is time to write a song for Pedro, etc. I got a few bits started last night but got stuck; am going to take it back up again later. Stay tuned.

Sorry, BB - didn't mean to get all edgy; just getting cranky @ work. I can't imagine how annoying the hockey thing is, esp. since I think American news outlets stopped caring once the season was officially cancelled.

Keep it real, Larry!

I was just gonna post that Eric Neel ganked your idea! Douchebag. Maybe when you guys get bored, the NBA Shootaround Gang can start infiltrating the Baseball Tonight blog out of jealousy.... The possibilities of Stephen A and Walton showing up are endless. But this is still the greatest thing ever. I think maybe 10 well-placed "hey baseball tonight has a blog!" messageboard postings could do wonders for the hit-o-meter.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking about e-mailing a couple of the ESPN radio shows with a link. Dan Patrick would probably love it.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Sports Guy's ESPN show reports that he's "on hiatus". I assume that means the Sports Gal had the baby, so congrats to them.

Anyhow, he had the prospective interns surfing the net looking for interesting stuff, and it looks like the runner-up is going to have a column of her own doing just that. Anyhow, Sports Guy + entourage would definitely like our blog.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

is there anyone in the bbtn crew that is an unapologetic, ridiculous yankee apologist? i wanted to write a column by jim kaat (the yankee yes announcer) explaining how this slow start is just a product of circumstance -- how is it their fault that they've had to play the mighty blue jays and devil rays back to back? -- but i also wanna get the blog back on track with more pieces by actual espn employees...

also, i think that we should maybe put the name of the writer in each piece from now on. i'm not sure where, but we should have a byline.

finally, i declare a moratorium on the "the bbtn boys invited me to..." posts. earlier today i skimmed through the whole blog and noticed a lot of that (i have been guilty of it as well).

finally finally, this is still looking great!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

also, some yankee announcer just said that cano "MIGHT HIT 400 FOR THIS BALLCLUB." WTF.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

also more clarifying: by byline i mean the fake author, not our names.

and by "invited me to" i don't mean that we shouldn't have guest posts, i just mean that we shouldn't write that phrase or its ilk.

word.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if there's anyone on BBTN who's a Yankee apologist per se; McCarver and Buck are wildly guilty of this, of course, as are the entire YES crew. Maybe a special guest appearance from BBTN alumnus Charley Steiner?

By byline, I assume you mean "Roger Angell," "Karl Ravech" et al. instead of our actual names, correct?

I sincerely wish I could be watching the Yankee game right now. Not that NESN Widescreen Wednesdays aren't a thing of terrible beauty, but I'm just DYING with Gamecast right now.

Jeff Brantley should do the "Derek Lowe Face"!!!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 5 May 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

Also, is it possible / feasable to "do" Jon Miller? & what other ESPN baseballers are we forgetting?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 5 May 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Are you saying the Cards aren't worth splooging over?

No, no -- the Cards are worth it. It's the unique TK splooging style that I want to take out to its most ridiculous possible extremes. But maybe it would be more fun if he was splooging over the Royals. I'll meditate on this.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Timmeh being the only regular cast member missing from the festivies so far

Website-wise, we haven't done Jayson Stark either. But yeah, after that, I think that's everyone.

I've given some thought to doing a "useless info" column, but I'm not sure whether it requires actual research or if I should just make up a bunch of wacky shit. Top it all off with a paragraph that muses on Shannon Stewart's fall from MVP-calibre grace, and you've got a column.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

TMQers, use this if you so desire -

STOP ME BEFORE I BUNT AGAIN!

Chicago/B versus the Lame Duck Monarchy of Kansas City. Young Zack Grienke (looks 15, pitches 45) enters the bottom of the 8th with a slim 1-0 lead, having thrown under 80 pitches in holding the shockingly successful Chicago/B squad to two hits and no walks. The two hits: an AJ Pierzynksi single in the 3rd (erased on a line-out double play to end the frame), and a Scott Podsednik single in the 4th (erased on a caught stealing, followed by Ks of the next two hitters).

Young Grienke walks Paul Konerko (.194), the Chicago/B clean-up hitter, to start the 8th inning. A pinch runner comes in for Konerko. Aaron Rowand is now at the plate. Rowand, struggling so far this year, was a bright light beaming through the malaise that weighted down Chicago/B last year, hitting 38 doubles and 24 home runs. With a runner on 1st and no out, an average of .783 runs are scored. With a runner on 2nd and one out, that average drops slightly, to .699. Unless the hitter at the plate is underqualified to swing at a major league pitch, statistics show that you should save the out, especially with on 6 left to use. Also, with your 5th place hitter, it would make sense to - IT'S A BUNT!

Rowand does his job, sacrificing to the pitcher to advance the pinch runner to 2nd base. The next batter, perrenial underachiever Jermaine Dye (once know as "underrated superstar Jermaine Dye") is hit, thus ending Grienke's day. 85 pitches, 53 strikes. Whatever manager Tony Pena saw in Grienke's performance to make him panic, I cannot say. Nevertheless, Grienke turned the game over to Andy Sisco, a Rule 5 pick-up that has proven to be one of the better Royal relievers this year. Sisco gets a runner-advancing ground-out, then walks Joe Crede (his 5th, in 88 ABs) and Juan Uribe (his 5th, in 69 ABs) to allow the tying run to score. Out comes Manager Pena to replace Sisco with young-closer-in-training (and Vladimir Nabokov protagonist) Ambiorix Burgos.

Burgos, a recent call-up from AA, is faced with a bases loaded, 2 out situation. In such situations, .798 runs are scored on average. The White Sox manage to better that number by 1.202 runs, as Burgos walks Scott Podsednik to drive in what would prove to be the winning run.

Burgos manages to strike out the next hitter, but the damage is done. The White Sox score two runs on zero hits, four walks, and a hit batsmen. Zack Grienke, while sitting in the dugout after throwing his 85 pitches, is tagged with the loss. His ERA rises to 3.38. The ERAs of both Sisco and Burgos decrease. And the productive out comes out from under the bed to scare children that dare believe it doesn't exist.

Jim Rome dropped a pretty good Rickey story yesterday on his TV show. I guess when Henderson ended up on the Mets a few years ago, he went up to Olerud and was saying to him that he played with a 1b that wore a helmet on the field before and Olerud had to remind Rickey that they played together on the Blue Jays. Rome then went on to state that the A's should consider giving Rickey another chance considering how bad their offense is going.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

That story has been denied by Olerud, here and elsewhere (and I am utterly unsurprised Rome would be reviving it):

http://espn.go.com/mlb/columns/caple_jim/1510280.html

"Sadly, that helmet story is a complete fabrication. But as Olerud acknowledged when I asked him about it, it sure sounds like it could be true."

Dahlem, catch up -- someone did Piazza on the filibuster a few weeks ago!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

FWIW - Fluxblog.org is valued at about $200K. Yard Work is only $190K behind OH YEAH!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

dude i am quite clearly referring to the last !!! (?)

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Yardwork should give out free MP3s! It always makes me barf whenever M@tty "El Beebio" P3rp3tua feigns amazement at some news sidebar mentioning the traffic to his site (due to the quality of his writing no doubt). It's like, ever wonder what would happen if you stopped hosting MP3s, Beebs?

ONLY LOVE IN THIS THREAD G!

Unless we're talking about baseball dimwits - then bring out the scissor hands.

Meanwhile - kottke.org is at $1.151 MILLION. Woo doggie.

where is da JAMZ?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 19 October 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

This is also to remind myself to GET BACK ON THE BURRO once I'm done moving.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 19 October 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

Hi Boys! Sorry I haven't been around lately. You might even say that I've been a bit of a ditz over the summer! Between deciding whether or not to divorce my husband and spoiling the kids to get them ready for the start of the school year, there's hardly been any time for watching baseball! But you don't have to worry about me anymore because I couldn't be happier. My sex life couldn't be better these days -- over the past few months, my love canal has been squealing with passionate glee like you wouldn't believe! It's true what they say, make-up sex really is the greatest! Sure, this girl might be out of your league (and I'm not talking about the AL and the NL LOL) but you guys need to remember that the next time your ladies appear unsatisfied. I used to get angry with Kris all the time (most of the spring, in fact) but after he fucks my brains out I love him more than ever. CYA soon! Anna.

"I’m sure he will be a good mentor on the Pirates’ young pitchers, as well as Michael Bay and the other hitter guys. Heck, that’s worth it, even if we end up losing a lot more games. Especially if we end up losing a lot more games."

G00blar, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

Morbs: I'm just nostalgic for the salad days, before we sold out and had Yanc3y killed.

David R., Wednesday, 22 August 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)

where IS Yanc3y? Witness Protection?

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Yanc3y is in Kruk's garage fridge, sliced into easily digestible pieces.

Andy K, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

I sold out and all I got was "Yard Work" bumper sticker and a pint of beer. And memories. Can't forget about those.
