Indie-Rock Icon Stephen Malkmus on Fantasy Baseball:

When discussing his beloved fantasy sports teams, Stephen Malkmus might as well be talking about his music persona: "If I have a winning team, I act really cocky, and if I have a losing team, I act sort of indignant."

...

"That [dramatics at final Pavement show] was stupid," he remembers now, regretfully. Though there was obviously some tension in the breakup, it appears to have been largely amicable — many of the Pavement guys are in Malkmus' fantasy baseball league, after all.

More here.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 3 June 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

I betcha Malkmus doesn't track FIELDING PERCENTAGE in his league!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 3 June 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

Hi, I'm bitter because I want Burrell & Johnson back, and Dotel is DOA.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 3 June 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm going to be forever cemented in 11th place. 11th isn't bad... it's like being #1 twice!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 3 June 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Last night, for the first time this season, I benched one of my starting pitchers on the day of his start ... not starting Jeff Suppan @ Coors ended up being a good move.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 3 June 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I have this one team that looks like the 2004 All Star Team (Mauer, Thome, MGiles, Renteria, Lowell, Pierre, Berkman, VWells, VGuerrero, Sexson on the bench) and I am in 11th out of 12th. The team is near the bottom in almost every offensive category. Meanwhile, in a league where I decided to take pitching with 6 out of my first 8 picks, I am near the top of the league in every offensive category. What the hell.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 3 June 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Some of the recent trades have confused me. What's the deal with Farnsworth for Gonzalez? They're practically the same pitcher!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 4 June 2005 05:14 (twenty years ago)

fuck this crap. Injuries are killing me. oh well. My own damn fault for drafting ol' man SCHILL numero UNO. fuck it, i hate life. I will still win. It's a wide-open ballgame.

We're a mere 1/3 of the way through, my friends...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 4 June 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

hilarious post from my other league:

how can I have derrek lee and suck such gigantic cock? It's a mystery to me. The fucking beltway busts of beltre and beltran.

it's like being a virtual cub fan. MVP for nothing!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 4 June 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

[BTW: Thanks for the sweet admin sweetness!]

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 4 June 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

MIR: I'm forecasting a bit w/ that trade. Also, Farnsworth gives me the heebie-jeebies.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 4 June 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Also: I suspect the managers of the other team are basing their trades on a couple intangibles (cheekbones, uniform flair, etc.).

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 4 June 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

I feel a bit silly for asking this question 1/3 of the way into the season, but better late than never:

IP is a statistical category this year, as opposed to last year when it wasn't figured into the standings BUT there was a 1200 inning limit (is this correct?).

This year, IP counts toward the standings but there is still a 1400 inning limit. However, only four or five teams are currently projected to reach that limit. For everybody else, IP is effectively a counting stat just like any other.

Yes?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 4 June 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

You are absolutely correct, it's to balance out the phenomenon of abandoning starters and only pitching relievers down the stretch to preserve/build the K/BB K/9 non-counting stats.

so should i just like give up now or what?

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

So should I just cut Jason Schmidt? Worthless POS.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 6 June 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

My season is tanked. Chipper Jones is going on the DL for his bruised "not" bruised heel. Clint Barmes is also gone for two months with a broken collar bone from trying to carry grocerys up some stairs. Add this in with my gimpy 1b duo of Thome and Morneau and I have no power at all.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

well, i've got a bunch of outfielders and 3 ss eligible dudes. some of them are even okay, too.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

Earl, I'll hit you w/ another trade offer this evening. If you want to be pre-emptive, make me an offer - I've plenty of OF / 1B / IF depth for ya.

Note to team: HIT THE DAMN BALL.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

I could use a SS and either a 3b or OF. I've got four players that can play the 1b position, so it isn't quite much a need as some other positions. I figure Thome will eventually get it together and Morneau hasn't had a big injury as much as a bunch of little ones.

I have bunches of starting pitching for trade.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

i could maybe trade jose reyes.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Woot! Since I complained about being stuck at 11th I've shot up to 4th place!
Although with 4 teams only 4 points behind me I shouldn't get too excited.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Note to team: HIT THE DAMN BALL.

once again, my fortunes in my other league are directly proportional to my failures in this league. (i've in 4th place in the other one.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 June 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

it's an immutable law my teams have been following as well.

the leglo (the leglo), Thursday, 9 June 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

I've been bitten by the DL bug -- Matt Holliday is going on the DL, and Jamey Carroll (replacement for Jose Vidro, who is also on the DL) has a bum ankle and might miss a week. If Carroll can't play, then I'll have four guys out and won't be able to field a full team unless I dump some pitching to clear up new roster spots. Just as my guys were starting to hit, too!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 10 June 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

I have proposed a trade to Leeeeeee involving Johnny Damon, but haven't heard back yet about it. If one of you can offer me some pitching (wins, saves) that is comparable to Mongo's career year stats, hit me up quick two times.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

SPROING!

Nym, pitch me some woo! I got yr pitching right here!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't mind swaping and outfielder for a starter, myself.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Where were you guys three weeks ago when I was shopping my starters for outfielders? Oh that's right, I made those offers *to both of you*!

The winds of trade at Chez Namesakes are always blowing (if you are reconsidering) ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 11 June 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

"those offers"...dude, seriously, you coulda come more correct with that, you know it.

but i got you all in mind. i just think it's not very sporting of me to retract my trade offer to leeeeeeeeee. i do that too much anyway.

You don't think it was a fair offer? My guy is presently ranked higher than your guy on Yahoo's rankings. Also, I figured that you were in the ideal "sell high" situation.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 11 June 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

wow, did I just blow that? I thought there were like no comparisons there. try again?

and leee, no, it's Hee Hate Me that i have an offer in with. grr. I'm cancelling, and announcing:

JOHNNY DAMON IS ON THE TRADING BLOCK. FIRST ONE THAT OFFERS ME GREAT RELIEF OR STARTING PITCHING WILL BE AMPLY REWARDED.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Saturday, 11 June 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

wow, did I just blow that?

Sorry! I typed that comment this morning before I saw your offer (which has now been accepted).

Anyway, this exchange has confused me a bit, but the end result is the same -- CAN/US CROSS-BORDER TRADING HAS BEEN RESUMED.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 13 June 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

I don't think trading hitting for pitching at equal value is all that sensible in the ILBB league.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 13 June 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

You think the guy getting the hitter gets the upper hand?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 13 June 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

you don't have the pitching "lineup" that is Z. Greinke, D. Cabrera, S. Kazmir, C. Wang, and B. Sheets. Look at their stats for the last week, especially this weekend. I dropped seven slots in two days!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 13 June 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

That happens, though - I dropped from 3rd to 12th last week because my hitting REALLY went south. Wang is as Wang does (WANG), and DC has been spotty all year. (Have you seen the guy? Dude's all leg!) Grienke's lack of success, though (aside from wins, which he ain't getting any time soon, unfortuantely), is troubling. I did see him break off a silly breaking ball against Troy Glaus this weekend, though - the thing was 50 MPH if it was any speed, and it traveled like a perfect sine wave, starting eye high and then dropping right into the strike zone. Glaus didn't even move his bat.

I don't think it (FG for JD) was a bad trade at all, though Freddy G gives me the willies, as I don't trust him (or the ChiSox) much. (Yes, the ChiSox will need to win 120 games this year to convince me they are For Real.)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 13 June 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

You think the guy getting the hitter gets the upper hand?
Pretty much.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 13 June 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Just wanted to update you guys that Shea Hillenbrand just earned his MLB-leading 11th HBP tonight. Now you know the secret to my team's success.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 13 June 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Fantasy-wise, Halladay's usual brilliance tonight was completely cancelled by Brandon Backe's brutality, the latter being the worst start by any of my pitchers this season.

Re: pitching vs hitting in the league this year, I do think that more teams are in need of hitting than pitching right now. Stated differently: Yanc3y, gygax, and milo's teams are dominating the major hitting categories, whereas everybody else's teams have major holes in their offense. And whaddaya know, Yanc3y, gygax, and milo's teams are placed 1-2-3, and have been for a while now.

However, as far as availability goes, I believe good pitching is just as difficult to find as good hitting. During the first 6-8 weeks of the season, a lot of us revamped our pitching staffs by picking up undrafted free agents. Now, there are *no* good starters available. If you're in need of a replacement player, it's definitely easier to find a decent hitter than a decent starter.

Even when Garcia isn't at his best (like yesterday), he still goes 6-7 innings, keeps the ball in the park, doesn't walk people, etc.; which is more than I can say for any of my other starters who aren't former Cy Young winners. Now I've got to sweat through Backe and Webb's starts that much more. But of course, I'm excited about this trade. My team needed a big change.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

On one hand, I beg to differ, as my hitting stats are easily as good as any of theirs (my rank-line: 18 20 16 17 14 6.5 12 16 6 12 19 14.5 17 16) but I'm in 11th place, as my pitching is ten tons of ass in one pair of pants.

On the other hand, I welcome the change, and this allows me to keep Wily Mo in the lineup and maybe give the suddenly-hot David DeJesus a shot. Plus I have another shocking trade in the works that will ROCK ALL Y'ALL'S WORLD.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

I might have overstated my case a bit ... Sons of Joe Orsulak and $800 Boys are also dominating in hitting. In comparison, the pitching wealth is spread amongst more teams, and therefore fewer teams can boast pitching lines like the hitting lines of the five aforementioned teams. But it's still telling that three of those five teams are ranked 1-2-3.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

I agree. It's also telling that I was #4 about 5 days ago, and then my pitchers turned on me. I have six starters; these are their ERAs for the last week:

Sheets: 1.29, one win
Greinke: 22.85, no wins
Robertson: 8.71, no wins
Kazmir: 17.36, no wins
Wang: 9.00, no wins
Cabrera: 31.50, no wins

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

Starting pitching is harder to find - I'll give you that. But when it comes down to the stats you earn points with in the ILBB league, unless you're totally pitching desperate, a good hitter will have more impact than a good pitcher every time.

xpost - looking at those numbers - Haikunym would def. fall into the "pitching desperate" category

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

hence my quest to find
a good pitcher on a team
THAT CAN F*CKING WIN

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

It's also telling that I was #4 about 5 days ago, and then my pitchers turned on me.

I wake up each morning and it's like somebody has ranked the top twelve teams (except for the top three) by picking names out of a hat overnight. For the previous three weeks it seemed as though I was 7th almost every day, so I'm finding things a lot more exciting these days.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

i measure the overall sketchiness of this year's pitching based on how long y'alls have held on to fat sidney and daniel cabrera.

shit, for most of the first quarter of the season, my team era was significantly higher than my k/9. it's not even that much lower now.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

hey, cabrera's shown
flashes of brilliance this year.
also, he has sucked.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

I am very grateful for some of yours inclusion of my team in the "dominant offense" category. Like I mentioned way upthread, I only have 2 players in the top 100 for offense YTD: Delgado and Tejada. I truly mean that Hillenbrand's HBP is keeping me afloat in this forsaken league.

I only have ONE pitcher in the top 100 and that's Jason Isringhausen who I traded Jimmy Rollins for about a month ago.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

My sole 2nd baseman (Brett Boone, a top 50 player last year) might be released.

My best OF sat out 2 weeks for being on the juice and as chronicled on that other thread, was released yesterday despite batting .346/.373/.466... making people ask "What exactly was the big deal about Victor Diaz?"

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

My utility slugger guy (Pedro "OH NO A BREAKING BALL WHAT DO I DO!?!?!?!111" Feliz) has a OBP of .233 over the last month, and is only outslugging Boone over the same time period.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, and my other top OF is contemplating retirement after finally spending a season outside of Coors.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if that's the best way to look at it ... for instance, Yanc3y only has three hitters in the top 100 (six in top 100 offense).

You have two in top 100, four in top 100 offense. But those top two are fucking awesome: Tejada is the best at his position, Delgado is arguably the best at his position (er, if he was still in the AL). And the rest of your offense is fairly balanced (or has been to this point, Pedro Felix's return to earth notwithstanding) -- no stinkers, from where I sit.

Also, if we're judging things just by the # of guys we have in the top 100, then even I have two guys in the top 100 (not including Damon, who hasn't played for me yet) (four in the top 102 in offense) but my hitting sucks because there's no balance -- my outfield is excellent, but Vidro has been out for six weeks (and at least two more), while Helton and Lowell are hitting like their dead-ball era equivalents.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and MIR my team might need a sub tonight (I hurt my ankle) if you're free give me a call.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it doesn't matter how many Top 100 players Yahoo! or whomever says you have, as long as you're getting production top-to-bottom. Too many fantasy teams blow their load picking one or two top-tier superstars, and then just fill in the remaining gaps with wood putty.

Also, hi, Gygax, if you're going to rely on shiny turds like Pedro Feliz for consistent production, then I have some bridges you might want to purchase.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Pedro Feliz's (eligible at 3B/1B/SS/OF) turd was about to get real shiny... until Alfonzo had to fuck it up and pull a hammy trying to beat out (yet another) double-play.

Edgardo Alfonzo + PTBNL for the Kaz's (Matsui/Ishii).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Who's "top 100" (and top 102) rankings are we talking aboot here?

Yahoo's (although I'm still not sure how they're compiled).

Thermo, I would sub-in for you, but I hurt my back over the weekend so my flexibility is nearly nil. I won't be participating in any non-biking sports for a couple of days. Listen to us, we sound like pathetic old men "OH MY LEG!!" "OH MY BACK!!".

Baldelli injured his right elbow while working out on the field at the Raymond Naimoli complex this week and will fly to Birmingham, Ala., where Rays team physician James Andrews will examine the elbow to determine the extent of the injury, the Tampa Tribune reports. The report indicates it's likely that Baldelli will need Tommy John surgery which would put his timetable for recovery at a 12 month minimum.

Views: Those fantasy owners with Damon Hollins on their roster can expect him to continue to get regular playing time during any extended absence by Baldelli. This also means a possible call up of one of the franchise's promising young outfielders like Jonny Gomes, Delmon Young, or Joey Gathright could happen in the near future. Then again, we're talking about a team that recalls players like Reggie Taylor over three players with star potential.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 16 June 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Leeeee, did you trade for Morneau just to have him fit with your new team name? Shit, does this mean that I have to actually trade for Barry Zito now?

Getting Morneau and Bellhorn for Renteria sounds like a steal to me (but then again, I've never been sold on Renteria's star potential).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 16 June 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Morneau AND Bellhorn for Renteria? Holy crap!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

I almost picked up Woody when I was the Brueters!

Leeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

damn you, $800 Boys!

you just snagged the estimable emil brown away from me right as i was making my move!

foiled again.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 17 June 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

mwah hah hah hah

you should pick up ryan wagner though! i had to drop him to get emil, maybe his 11 holds will do someone some good. but I'm last in ERA and he ain't doin' me nothing.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 17 June 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

Who the fudge is closing for the Reds if Wagner's not closing?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 17 June 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

READ ONE YARD WORK, it's David Weathers!

Although it doesn't matter, they don't win enough to know who their closer should be.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 17 June 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

anyone looking for a 1b or mound fodder? i have 3 1b & 8 starters, looking for an outfielder.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 17 June 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Sexson is my first baseman so there's NO WAY I'd be interested.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I'm now in first place despite having Lowe and Mays get shelled last night and getting one strikeout between the both of them. What on earth is going on?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Your hitters raked last night, including three hits from Feliz who continues to defy logic with his above-average production. Meanwhile, Yanc3y's hitters have been slumping somewhat. Even I'm trailing him by about 15 RBI's these days.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 June 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Nym, I read that and though, "well, THAT makes no sense! David Weathers is nutty poop personified! it must be part of the funnies!" That says it all for me right there.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 17 June 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

including three hits from Feliz who continues to defy logic with his above-average production.

Pedro Feliz OPS:
2003 .793
2004 .790
2005 .739

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 17 June 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

yeah I shouldn't have dropped wagner probably, but screw it. it's my pro-danny-graves moment.

FREE HOMER NECK!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 17 June 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

xpost

I was thinking more of his peripheral numbers:

Games Runs RBI
2004 144 72 84

2005 62 32 40

i.e. ahead of last year's pace even though the Giants are in the bottom five in the NL in runs scored vs 2nd in the league last year.

Also, it's just his power numbers that are down -- OBP and AVG are virtually the same as last year.

Basically, it makes no sense to me that he's having this type of season without Bonds in the lineup.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 June 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

OMG - could Pedro Feliz ... be IMPROVING?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 17 June 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

(Answer: nah.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 17 June 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Are you trying to say he's on the juice?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 17 June 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

or off? huh? huh? HUH?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 17 June 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm also bitter because my hitters can't hit their way out of a paper bag and yet gygax gets production from Pedro Feliz.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 June 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Hell, I'm still upset at the Alex Sanchez windfall.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 17 June 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 17 June 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Watch out! I'm making my run! And I got Joe Blanton riding side-saddle now! WOOHOO!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 June 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

you and me, dude. don't get too excited about blanton.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 20 June 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm banking on his performance over the past couple of starts being a sign that he's turned off Suck Street and on Golden God Circle. Also, 2/5ths of my rotation is on the DL, and my pitching rate stats are still in the top 5 in the league, so what the heck, I can risk it. And it's not like I'm going to trade w/ any of you sneaks (yet) (bwah hah hah).

MIR - sorry about that dopey trade offer. I made it while playing poker (won $70!), and was distracted, and came to my senses about 5 minutes after making the offer.

Note to Carlos Beltran: go on the stupid DL, heal your damn quads, and stop "being a man" about it, because there's nothing manly about a 2-for-22 slide and ONE STOLEN BASE.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 June 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

onTO Golden God Circle. (Yeah, not funny - I save the chuckles for my sexxxy blog work.)

Also - hot damn, that in-hindsight ill-advised Jorge Cantu / Nick Johnson swap is almost not embarrassing! Dude actually WALKED a couple of times this weekend! That's hot!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 June 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

My guys are the new kings of the DL (sorry, Stormy). I've got two guys on the DL (I dropped a third last week), with three others playing day-to-day right now.

I'm not sure what I'll do if Ramon Hernandez ends up on the DL. I don't see the point of picking up another catcher short-term, because catchers can't hit and the replacement would just drag down my stats.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 20 June 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

I just realzied that I have only 3 OFs on my roster now! [Annoyed grunt] And Manny's hurt! So yeah, who wants a 1B or 2B or 3B?

Leeeeee (Leee), Monday, 20 June 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Leee, I'm curious about Durham. Take a look at my OF situation (bear in mind that Sanchez could be traded by the 23rd).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Leee didn't bite. DavidR, I've got 7 OF and you have a couple 2B. Could we talk about something fair and mutually beneficial?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

There's a lot of what-ifs in your outfield, commish! Also, I've been without my computer for the past several days.

Leeeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

The commissioner is [IN]

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

JOHNNY GOMES! And Adam Dunn doing the double ding-dong hitting SEVENTH? SEVENTH?

g!, I think my OF situation is pretty stable right now (cf. JOHNNY GOMES!), but thanks anyhoo!

Zito-Bonds Namesakes Injury Report

C: Hernandez (wrist)
2B: Vidro (ankle)
SS: Cabrera (elbow)
OF: Edmonds (ribs)
OF: Damon (shoulder)
OF: Holliday (hand)

That's five regulars and a semi-regular, all of them are either on the DL or day-to-day (although Edmonds looks like he's back as of today). Damon should be full-time by the weekend, and Vidro could be back this weekend. Surely this is the low point of my season.

My only opening day starters who haven't been injured are Helton and Lowell. Ironically, they both have sucked.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 23 June 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

btw, i don't expect my recent run to last, but i credit my best fantasy baseball season ever to billy beane's moneyball.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I credit my abysmal drop and probable failure to crap pitching.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

It's hard to believe I was tied for first 2 weeks ago, but the last few days I've dropped a place each day. I feel like the Orioles!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

dude, they gained last night!

no thanks to your precious miguel tejada!

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

fuck, i left Larry Walker (cortisone shots up the wazoo the past few days) on the bench in favor of Lofton (who I JUST read has a pulled groin) and Walker is has 2 tacos in 2 attempts already tonight.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 30 June 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

yeah, last night I benched wily mo pena, who hit a ball 492 feet. fortunately, my utility guy, dmitri young, went 0 for 5 to make up for it.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 30 June 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Nooooooo... Marte, Betancourt and Drew all going on the DL in the last few days!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 4 July 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 4 July 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 4 July 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

What was that thing called - where which ever of the Canadian baseball teams (J's and Expos) had the better record would win?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 4 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

The Pearson Cup? You're suggesting that we create our own micro-award within the ILBB league? Can we name it after Gordon Lightfoot?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 4 July 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Yes. And it's mine!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 4 July 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

VIDRO IS BACK, BITCHEZZZ.

Honestly, I've gone through about five or six players in his abscence to try and fill the void left by his two months on the DL.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Slump Blusters DL:

Jim Thome
Chipper Jones
Steve Finley
Oliver Perez
Clint Barmes (since dumped -- I have to have someone to play.)

I am totally fuxxored and probably won't finish much better than where I am currently located, unless Brad Hawpe, Jason Lane and Aaron Boone turn into some power hitting machines. I've been making up some ground in hits, OBP and SB, but other than Livan, I've been bleeding some points in my pitching.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

I'm in major damage-control mode, the current free-fall has hit terminal velocity allthewhile my makeshift parachute of Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Tejada and Jason Isringhausen has too many holes to fill.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Nobody I drafted after the 13th round is still on the team! I'm the reverse-Sabean!

Leeeeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

How do you remember your draft order? Is there a way to check this on Yahoo?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

My 4th round pick was cut (Bret Boone) and is currently w/o a team, my #6 pick just got off the DL today after spending a couple months there (Odalis Perez)

Of my #11-20 picks, 7 are no longer on my team.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, I've been trying to figure out how to view the draft results since the season started.

Like you, my 4th round pick is ass (Lowell). I kind of wish he'd get cut, it'd put me out of my misery.

Only four of my #11 - 20 picks are no longer on my team (one left via trade). Like I said upthread, most of my roster moves consisted of cycling through a parade of infielders to fill in for Vidro (and the struggling Lowell).

# of pitchers drafted prior to:

Roy Halladay - 12
Roger Clemens - 17
John Smoltz - 36
Chris Carpenter - 37
Jon Garland - I won't even bother counting

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, cry me a freakin river, you guys complainin boutcher 4th and 6th picks... my god. I've lost my FIRST and THIRD picks for essentially the season so far. And my second pick has turned out to be a bum even when healthy (which hasn't been very often.)(but that doesn't mean I don't want the Sox to try to go out and get him!)

for the record, my DL list before Schmidt came back the other day--

Curt Schilling
Jason Schmidt
Nomar Garciaparra
Corie Koskie
Brandon Lyon (was NL saves leader)
Mike Hampton (was having an outstanding start to the season)

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

can't complain about
my first two picks now that sheets
is off the DL

but my team still sucks
like a mosquito sucking
melons through a straw

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

Hey, Schmidt's turning it around already. He's never pitched well against the Padres, so that last start = hiccup. If you don't believe me, I'll take him off your hands for free.

Leeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

The King is dead, long live the King. Nice work, jqh, and don't forget to send a big ol' present to Travis Hafner.

warning: I think Todd Helton is no longer teh suck -- watch out folx.
