For those of us with hometown teams in the gutter.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

The Rangers fired John Hart (er, Hart 'resigned,' honest) today, replacing him with some 28-year old unknown. This one offseason after they let go of the highly-regarded Beane protege Grady Fuson.

Brilliant work as always, Mr. Hicks - you evil fucker.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

the list of free agents available this year is pretty thin, especially with starting pitching. there's gonna be alot of teams going after some highly mediocre players.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

How much is Burnett going to make? Mid-point between Pavano money and Pedro money?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

Im more interested in how much money Jeff Weaver is going to catch in the FA market. I hope he finds a nice home with a team thats looking to increase their HBP stats next year.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

Why would anyone want to be the Pirate or Devil Ray manager? Those jobs seem like resume killers. Maybe they figure they can white out that part of the resume..."oh no, I was never a manager of the Devil Rays, I was working at Red Lobster during that period of time."

I hate to diss on Pittsburgh, but that club is run by a bunch of no fun bums.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah...big props to the Brewers finishing 81-81 this year! It may not sound like much, but this is their first .500 season since 1992, which was Phil Garner's first year as a manager and Paul Molitor's last season as a player in Milwaukee. I'd like to think their management won't screw it up and they could turn into a contender.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

Pirate or Devil Ray manager has some upside. You don't have to actually be competitive, just be better. A little. Make it to .500 and you're a hero. Then parlay that into a job with a real team.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

That could happen, but what usually happens is that the manager sticks for one season too long and then he finds himself eating Denny's three meals a day back in AA.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

Is Hideki Matsui an unrestricted FA after this season?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

Yes. Gammons (or someone on ESPN Insider) predicted that it was back to the Yankees or he'd go home to Japan.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

I don't know why he wouldn't listen to offers from a team on the West Coast (esp. the Mariners) with strong Japanese ties, if his problem is comfort.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

If his problem is money, I'm sure he can pull in JD Drew-sized cash.

How exactly does it work that he can become a free agent after three years, instead of six? Yeah, I know that he signed a contract for x years, but is there a non-Japanese precedent where a player was poached from another pro league and could circumvent the normal rules in this way?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

How many first-round draft picks do you think Barry Zito will command?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

I guess as a Padre fan, I should probably post in this thread since their season is already over, really. I hear Kevin Towers is probably moving on to Arizona. I'd like to see the Pads give Grady Fuson a shot at the GM spot. I like Towers, but the minors seem pretty depleted despite not actually trading much of anyone. Khalil Greene is the first good hitting prospect we've developed in ages, and he went through the minors really fast (as is often the case with college grads). I'd like to see them re-sign Giles if it's affordable, and sign someone with some actual pop to play 1B and let Klesko move along to some other team.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

I'd be shocked if the A's trade Zito.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

How long's he signed for?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

2006 will be the final year of his contract. If the free agent market is indeed as weak as mentioned and he could command a few dazzling rookies/overlooked players, then I 100% believe he will go the way of the Big Three.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Even though I like Zito more than Mulder (and about as much as Hudson) I don't think he'll command as much as either one (not the least because many GMs will be wary considering how Mulder and Hudson continued to "underperform" this year, but also because Cy Young aside Zito never seems to get much respect.) If the deal that 'gax! is talking about is there (like the Cardinal deal last year) I'm sure that Beane'll jump on it, but somehow I doubt that people'll be offering it. I think they'll keep him like they did Tejada and Giambi and let him walk at the end of next year for draft picks or try to sign him to a 3 or 4 year deal over this off-season (which isn't as unlikely as it sounds.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

For fun fun: according to BP, the pitchers most comparable to BZ (prior to this year) are:

Steve Carlton - 1972
Jim Palmer - 1972
Frank Viola - 1987
Vida Blue - 1976
Wilson Alvarez - 1997 (wheeeeee!)

Alex's scenarios make sense: trade him if a killer deal comes along, keep him otherwise. IF Harden gets 25 stars, AND Crosby plays 130-140 games, AND Swisher finds a happy medium between sucking and streaking, AND they can stop Kendall from sucking, the A's are gonna be hawt.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

Just remember that all the tell-tale signs of Mulder's 2005 inconsistency were there in the tail-end of 2004.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Mets' best catching option:

Jacobs/Castro or Castro/Piazza?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Door #1! It's cheaper! What're Jacobs' supposed problem behind the plate - rag arm? stiff as board? walking sieve? Anyway, even at a discount, Pizzaface probably isn't work the money - better to keep the C in-house and try fixing the right side of the infield (and Willie Randolph).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Yes, as someone on BP said they can get a stud 1B with Jacobs catching (pls God not Sean Casey).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

What big market team is crazy enough to take Piazza on as a DH? Yankees? Angels?

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Sean Casey is the albatross around the Reds neck and they went ahead and signed him to an extension. Criminy they have Dunn and Griffey who both could benefit from being moved at least part of the time to 1b, as they have so many outfielders, but they still resigned Casey. Nuts...

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

What big market team is crazy enough to take Piazza on as a DH? Yankees? Angels?

THE A'S! They should totally take an inexpensive flier on Pizzaface! Slap Hatty's ass on the bench where it & its low SLG ass belong! Maybe even get a nice "3rd catcher" in the bargain, too!

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Another player with a solid back ground facing an uncertain future is Jim Thome. With Ryan Howard emergence this year the Phils will undoubtably try to unload Thome to someone in this off season. The two questions for Philly is how much of that big contract will they have to eat to push Thome off and is Thome too old and beatup to be worth much after this past season's debacle. If Thome can return to form, he would be the kind of addition the Angels need in their lineup.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

I saw someone speculate the Phils may have to pay 2/3 of Thome's $ to move him. If the Mets go for 1b rather than catcher, they could be a taker if Philly is willing to send him within the division.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

Does Thome have any sort of no-trade clause? Considering how damn teary-eyed he got leaving Cleveland, I'd be surprised if he accepted a trade to just any old team.

And have the Delgado out of Florida rumors died down?

Garrett Martin (Garrett Martin), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

"The Sox are bound to undergo a major makeover before they next meet in Fort Myers, Fla.; well-known characters such as Johnny Damon, Kevin Millar, Bill Mueller, Mike Timlin, and maybe even Manny Ramirez are likely to be gone. Manager Terry Francona and Epstein are among others no longer under contract, and several in the Sox locker room viewed this defeat as the last roundup for the raggedy men who made hardball history in the Hub."

From Dan Shaunnessey's column...

So is Boston going to completely blow up this team and start from scratch?

Earl Nash (earlnash), Saturday, 8 October 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

They may overpay Damon just cuz there are no better CF options.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 9 October 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Mueller and Millar are gone though, I wager. Timlin depends on the money. I don't see Ramirez going anywhere though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 9 October 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

NY? I got a feeling there will be less changes than advertised as the payroll budget is probably about at its limits. What high priced losers come off the payroll now that the year is over: Kevin Brown, Bernie, Matsui and who else? How much do they pony up to keep Chacon around? I was noticing he is a six year player and is most likely a free agent.

Does Torre get "promoted"? I figure if Donny Baseball is going to be the manager, Torre will not be fired and he will not resign, instead Joe will be promoted to President of Yankee Greatness next Gene Michael's VP of Concerned Looks. Brian Cashman needs to quit if the Boss doesn't fire him, every year at playoff time he looks a bit more sickly and pale.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

by the end of next season Cashman will be pushed around in a wheelchair, grey moustache in full bloom, wearing a heavy cardigan and a winter hat, blanket covering his legs.

Mueller and Millar are gone though, I wager.

My Sox friend says Mueller wants to go to a west coast team, and one team that could really use a third baseman after Randa returns to Kansas City is my San Diego Padres. I'm not sure if it's a good fit or what kind of prospect I'd give them, but he's a hell of a lot better than Sean Burroughs.

Oh, this is rich:

Despite [Blue Jays GM] Ricciardi's pessimism on meaningful trades, one deal that he will try to complete, sooner rather than later, is the reassignment of third baseman Corey Koskie to Minnesota for first baseman Justin Morneau.

The Koskie three-year contract for $17 million (all figures U.S.) seemed necessary last winter, but with the emergence of Aaron Hill and with the Jays insisting they want to keep Orlando Hudson, the Anola, Man., native is an impediment to the Jays' progression. Ricciardi was asked about Koskie's future.

"I don't know," he replied. "If Hill's on our club he's going to have to play every day. I don't think it would do him any good to be a reserve. It will play itself out.

...

The Twins were upset when they lost Koskie to the Jays. Many in Minnesota blamed the Twins missing the playoffs on the absence of Koskie in the clubhouse. [ED NOTE: Yeah, it was Koskie's moxie that caused the Twinkies to miss the playoffs, not their woefully inept offense.] The Jays might be willing to pay the difference in what the Twins had offered last winter and then throw in a mid-level prospect to get Morneau for first base.

The Twins left a two-year, $8.25 million deal on the table. Koskie will earn $11 million over the next two seasons. The Jays would have to make up $2.75 million, which is the difference.

No doubt JP had this long-game in mind when he signed Koskie in the first place. Cough cough. Cough.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Confusing ... keep in mind that Richard Griffin was a prominent villian in the postscript of "Moneyball" (paperback edition). He's old school and he doesn't like JP (you can practically picture Griffin smirking as he writes the article).

Hinske had a good year excepting one AWFUL stretch in May-June, and his strong 2nd half should give him some trade value. I think that's how Jays management sees it too. Trading him + resigning Hillenbrand and/or trading for Morneau would be OK.

Justin Speier was the setup guy last year and was easily their best reliever (0.95 WHIP). He and Batista should switch jobs.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

What's all this crazy talk about the Marlins being unhappy with Delgado and wanting to dump his contract? Compared to the other free agent hitters who signed for similar money (Drew, Beltre, etc.) the Marlins got crazy value for their $$$. What, having one of the top five hitters in the league isn't good enough for them? As if Paul Konerko isn't going to get 13mil/yr this offseason despite being far less productive! Are the Marlins getting visions of Thome or something?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

His defense at 1B was apparently terrible, but yeah his contract was a ridiculous value compared to almost every comparable free agent slugger signing of last year.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Koskie + prospects + Jays picking up the tab for Morneau sounds good for Minnesota but given our luck Corey will hit .250 and the prospects will all be starting pitching (which we are not exactly hurting for) and Morneau will turn into Toronto's answer to Papi.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 4 November 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Lawrence's success seems to be predicated on either the infield defense not sucking or his BABIP getting some pixie dust. His best year = 206 hits in 210 IP (2003). Every other year = at least 20 more hits than IP. Frank's gonna have fun yanking him after 2 IP, no doubt.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 4 November 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

As for the Manny trade, the Hartford Courant (hometown pride awoo) sez: "The deal would send Diamondbacks third baseman Troy Glaus and Angels first baseman Darin Erstad to the Red Sox. Arizona would receive additional players and prospects."

IF this means that Glaus goes to 1B and Erstad goes to CF (assuming Damon walks as well, & he probably will, esp. w/ his boy Millar going buh-bye), then maybe it's an OK trade. Of course, that leaves a Manny-sized hole in LF that can't be filled via free agency - the only OF worth a damn out there is Giles, and it makes no sense @ all to sign Giles when you just traded away someone that's the same age and about a thousand katrillion times better. Never mind that acquiring Glaus & Erstad will up the Gimp Quotient in the Fen by about 5000% percent.

Maybe they do a one-year-deal with Reggie Sanders or Jeromy Burnitz or Matt Stairs (or Bernie!) as a stopgap measure, but a stopgap for what? The one notable (i.e. the guy w/ the press luv) OF prospect the Sox have (Brandon Moss, age 22) just made it to AA for a total of 23 ABs, and the 2K6 free agent OF crop (Dye? Lee? BARRY?) doesn't look so promising.

They should hang a mondo-sized UNDER CONSTRUCTION sign over the Green Monster. And raise ticket prices again.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 4 November 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

If Glaus can stay healthy, the Red Sox should be able to find someone to fill out the outfield and score plenty of runs. Unless they get lucky with finding someone and the walking wounded come back to form, I don't see how they can fix their poor pitching staff. That pitching staff is the biggest problem.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 4 November 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

IF Glaus can stay healthy.

Starting pitchers right now = Wells being Manny, Clement wiping his ass after shitting himself for the last 6 weeks of the season, Wade Miller pitching like Sox-era David Cone, Brandon Arroyo's not-so-even flow, and the Schill taking baby steps back from his sucking-it-up 2K4 post-season. And Wakefield bathing in the blood of virgins (that throw like a girl). Bullpen = waiting for the wheels to re-attach to Foulke and fall off Timlin. And trying to forget about Jeremi Gonzalez.

I'm guessing the Papelbonbon & one / two of the other wunderKs will get a chance to fill the rotation, while I REALLY HOPE the front office goes the cheap route (or, um, the Hansen route) re: bullpen solutions - fuck giving Wags or Hoff $7-$9M per to pad their IRAs. And let the Yankees overpay for BJ. I wouldn't mind the Sox throwing down some cash for Millwood, though, while going the Dierker-Astro route re: weaning starting prospects on MLB hitters via the bullpen.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 4 November 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

I'd think Mazzone's sway is more apparent among pundits than pitchers. The only PC that I can recall having any clout was Rick Peterson, and that mystique, for the most part, went to poof after the Kazmir debacle.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 4 November 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if Leo will do a JoePa style living room sitdown with Byrd or Millwood trying to recruit them. If their first hand knowledge of Mazzone is favorable, it couldn't hurt the O's chances of signing them.

This is just a hunch, but I figure Byrd will stay in LA of Anaheim.

The thing I could see the O's doing is taking a couple of affordable picks on guys Mazzone has scouted and perhaps thinks he could work with like many of the retreads he brought back from the scrap heap in Atlanta.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Last I read Sori talks have cooled.

Assorted Mets sites suggest the trade was a salary dump, and Nady will be either all-purpose UT/PH or platoon 1b ... or a chip in a Huff-Baez or Manny deal.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

The Giants announced that they are no longer in the running for retaining lefty relief ace Scott Eyre. He's reportedly rounded his options down to several East Coast clubs.

While this isn't along the lines of dealing Joe Nathan, I have a feeling this could come back to bite the Giants hard.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 November 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

I have a feeling Felipe wrung the last juices out of Eyre's arm.

i mean, that's juan pablo escobar money!

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 18 November 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

It's the 7 years that are insane though. Does anyone seriously believe that Damon will be a $12m+ player at 39?!?! Four years is pushing it, frankly, but 7 is just bonkers.

Chris Kahrl on Eyre:

Now, I know and you know that Eyre was a top-20 reliever in Expected Wins Added, but really, what does this kind of money for a situational lefty achieve? Besides possibly cutting into Pepto use in the dugout, but even then, that sweet pink relief is just going to be repurposed by the beancounters who will have to fret that much more about how to maximize the Cubs' legalized scalping profits. More basically, though, it's as if the decision to give up on Mike Remlinger served no didactic purpose whatsoever. Skip avian flu, there's a creeping case of Wade-ry in the Windy City, as Jim Hendry feverishly tries to give his manager a pitcher he's comfortable using, at whatever absurd price, just to avoid further confrontations on whether or not the organization might want to trust any of the homegrown kids Dusty hasn't heard of. Just as it didn't work with Remlinger in '03-'05, I guess I'm just not wild about how this is going to turn out.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 18 November 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

I think I may have been too quick to dismiss Scott Eyre's valuebleness.

Sonneywolferinecastleee (Leee), Saturday, 19 November 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

So who will win the race to overpay for Blistery McPus-sack and Mike "Million Bucks a Homer" Lowell? Both the Blalock / Danks or Diamond and Hanley Ramirez / Jon Lester deals seem pretty damn stupid for each respective non-Marlin organization. Moving Hanley's no big deal, but throwing in Lester could be fairly idiotic. But is that what we should expect in the post-Theo era?

Garrett Martin (Garrett Martin), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

I thought the Hanley / Lester deal was for Blalock!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

That would make more sense, and be a better deal, than the same package for Beckett/Lowell. Is that what the Herald or Globe are saying? I've only heard Hanley and Lester or Anibel Sanchez for Beckett and Lowell. A three-way involving Blalock would make that far less shitty.

Garrett Martin (Garrett Martin), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

"Blistery McPus-sac"!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

well, y'know...id mlb is going to place a luxury tax on teams that have payrolls that are too high, they ought to levy an idiot tax on the marlins. is it just me or does their acquisition strategy seem to be to pay well-over for market multiyear deals which they, in actuality, have no intention of honoring? i mean, delgado's on the block, tying lowell to beckett is a bullshit move...am i missing something?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 21 November 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

In no way is Hanley/Sanchez for Beckett/Lowell a shitty trade. Hanley/Lester, maybe, but this is probably the most the Sox could ever get for Hanley. I'd pull the trigger in a heartbeat. (If they could somehow get Blalock instead of Lowell, all the better, though either one of them would end up playing 1B anyway.)

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Monday, 21 November 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Kenji Jojima reportedly just signed with Seattle for $16.5M over 3 years.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 21 November 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

is it just me or does their acquisition strategy seem to be to pay well-over for market multiyear deals which they, in actuality, have no intention of honoring?

I don't Lowell's deal (4Y, $32M ?) was outrageous, since there are very few 3B'men who put up 30HR with a near-900 OPS every year. But Lowell inexplicably stunk last year, and who knows whether it was a one-year abherration or a sudden decline in skills. Now's the time to trade him while several teams would still be willing to take a chance, because after another season like 2005 the Marlins would likely have no choice but to cut him and eat the contract.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 21 November 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

huh. is his deal weighted funny, then, b/c i seem to recall whatever portion of the k the marlins were asking folks to take on last year came out to more than 8mill a year?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 21 November 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

But what if last year was an aberration? Rushing out to dump him at wholesale price is going to look real silly if he bounces back.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 21 November 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Lowell's contract might very well be weighted funny -- I know Delgado's deal is heavily backloaded.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 21 November 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

BTW - can someone explain to me why they want to get rid of Delgado after just one year?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 21 November 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

Some things I read suggest that the ridiculous backloading of Delgado's contract - he only got $4M last year? - meant they planned to do a bait & switch w/ him from the start. I've also read reports that the Fish are wary of paying Blalock the $5M per year he's owed during the next 2-3 years. Because, yeah, paying that much for one of the better 3B in the game entering his prime is stupid.

Jeffrey Loria is cruising for a cockpunch.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 21 November 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

If the bait-and-switch thing is true, then it's an asinine plan because other teams would be *less* likely to want to pick up a heavily backloaded contract.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 21 November 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

"BTW - can someone explain to me why they want to get rid of Delgado after just one year?"

It is the same story with the Marlins, their attendence never took off liked they hoped after winning it all and they struck out in getting a corporate welfare stadium built just for them with tax dollars. So in response, they are trying to cut payroll like mad.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 21 November 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

I thought Blalock and either Danks or Diamond for Beckett/Lowell would be a damn fine deal for the Rangers.

Blalock's gotten more and more mediocre each year as his home/road splits get worse (a mild bounceback Lowell would be just as good, maybe better than Blalock) and neither prospect is in any way a proven commodity. Beckett is reasonably cheap (entering arbitration), Lowell's contract is fairly short.

Hanley+prospect sounds much worse to me - I was under the impression that Ramirez could be a top-shelf SS in a couple of years.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Monday, 21 November 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

According to Gammons: Beckett/Lowell to the Sox for Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez and a player to be named.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Pretty nice pickup for the Sox.. Sounds like the kiddies they gave up arent TOP SHELF talent and Beckett is entering his prime..

Unless his blistered fingers fall off.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

I love this trade. Ramirez is going to be a good shortstop someday, but it won't be on the Sox in the next three years, and he certainly isn't going to start in CF next year or anything. Sanchez is a nice prospect with a high ceiling, but by no means the Sox' best.

I am firmly aboard the Blistery McPus-sack bandwagon. If Lowell can return to something approaching his 2000-2004 form, this trade is a huge steal.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

Or, better yet, if the Sox can pawn Lowell off on the unsuspecting Twins for more pitching (as the SoSH hivemind seems to think they might).

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

I just looked at Ramirez's stats for the last two seasons, I remove my previous objections. I thought he was lighting up Double-A, but not so much.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

Much as I hate Tom Hicks, I wish the Rangers had landed this deal just so their fans could have some hope for the immediate future. Betting the future on two (struggling) AA pitching prospects is risky.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure a few of those 36 doubles Mike Lowell hit last year in that cavern in Miami would have ended up over the fence in Boston. I think Lowell has a decent chance to get it together. With Manny (who I doubt can be traded) and Ortiz, it isn't like Lowell has to carry the club.

That trade is worth it if nothing else to get Beckett. He will still only be 26 when the season starts.

San Diego should try to get Kevin Youkilis from Boston to fill that gaping void at 3b. Youkilis has hit pretty good in the limited playing time he has had and it is appearant that the Sox are never going to give him a full time shake. As much as he has been called up and down, Youkilis has to be nearly out of options, so I think Boston would deal him pretty easy. Besides that, he is a cheap bet that might work out OK.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

Monday's TENTATIVE deal?

Make it so, Manny!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 07:43 (twenty years ago)

Oh, it's only physicals.

Keep those hands gloved, Josh!

Gammo sez that Youk! might slide over to first, which is cool, too, tho I do like the notion of flipping Lowell somewhere else and letting Youk! get a shot at the hot corner. There was also some talk of bringing back Dave Roberts as a stopgap CF guy - maybe the Youk! deal would involve that? (Don't trade Youk!) Gammo's vision of a Beckett / Papelbon / Lester rotation is dreamy in a totally unsubstantiated way.

PS - For whatever ridiculous reason, I totally love having former proto-Eckstein Craig Shipley as part of the Red Sox front office.

bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that deal is just silly. lowell is regarded pretty highly at 3rd, no? i'd still think unless he's markedly better in the field than youkilis, you'd move him to first.

are BOTH millar and mueller FAs?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, both Millar and Mueller are basically gone. And without Lester getting involved, that trade's pretty good for the Sox. With the money they'll save on Lowell, I guess the Marlins will be able to pay for all the moving trucks they'll need when they get run out of town.

Garrett Martin (Garrett Martin), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Actually, there's still the schwag to be gotten for booting David Wells cross-country.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if 2005 defensive statistics are available anywhere yet, but Lowell's generally viewed to be pretty good in the field; using FP alone he actually improved from .982 to .983 from 04-05.

Lowell's BP ratings:

2002 +13
2003 +2
2004 +10

Youkilis:

2003 (Portland): +7
2003 (Pawtucket): -2
2004 (Pawtucket): +3
2004 (Boston): +6

Whether or not Lowell can still hit is another story, obviously.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Papi Sez:

SANTO DOMINGO (AP) - One of baseball's most fearsome offensive duos in 2005 — Red Sox's David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez — appears to be history.

According to Ortiz, "Manny is not returning to Boston."
"Manny is living through a difficult situation (in Boston) that only he and his family know and he no longer wants to play there," said Ortiz after arriving early Monday in the Dominican Republic.

Ramirez has asked for a trade in each of his five seasons with the Red Sox, but apparently this one is definite.
"I spoke with him last week before he left for Brazil and he told me that he wants to go to a team in the West," Ortiz, the Red Sox's designated hitter, said.

Ramirez has three years left on his $160 million contract. Because of his status as a player with 10 seasons in the major leagues and five with the same team, he is allowed to approve any trade.

"I found out that that they are doing everything possible to trade him," Ortiz said.
The Los Angeles Angeles of Anaheim have been named as a possible destination for Ramirez, as well as the New York Mets.

"Upon learning of the Blue Jays' five-year, $50 million offer to free-agent righthander A.J. Burnett, one executive said, "If Billy (Beane) was hesitating on trading (Barry) Zito, I would think this would have him placing billboards saying, 'Former Cy Young winner for sale, lightly used,' outside every team's stadium." Zito, a free agent after next season, is owed a mere $8.25 million in 2006. ..."

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Great trade for the Mets in terms of who they gave up, although Delgado's contract is really back-loaded:

2005: $4,000,000
2006: $13,500,000
2007: $14,500,000
2008: $16,000,000
2009: $12,000,000 (team option, or $4,000,000 buyout)

There are a bunch of incentives, mostly tied into MVP balloting, that could guarantee that fourth year.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Not a bad trade for the mets. I hope the NY fans aren't too hard on Delgado.

The most important thing mentioned in that article:
Unable to build a new baseball-only stadium in Miami, the Marlins announced yesterday that they would seek to move the franchise as soon as 2008.
Which was news to me. Where do the Marlins go?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Buy the Royals next, you pussy bastard!

More supposed wheeling & dealing in Boston, this time involving Los Rangeros (from the Globe via thee source for sports gnus, G3rard C0s10y Got Herpes From Carlos D Dot Com):

"According to two major league sources, the Sox have spoken with the Texas Rangers about trading for first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 draft. The 23-year-old Gonzalez, who hits lefthanded, split last season between Triple A Oklahoma and Texas. He hit .338 with 18 homers and 65 RBIs in 326 at-bats with Oklahoma, .227 with 6 homers and 17 RBIs in 150 at-bats with Texas.

"While the Rangers are believed to be interested in acquiring an outfield prospect, possibly Double A outfielder Brandon Moss, the Sox are likelier to offer up Triple A catcher Kelly Shoppach (above). Shoppach is a native of Fort Worth."

If this happens (whee!), I can still see Youk getting 400 PAs - the article suggests a 1B platoon between AG-L & Youk-R, & I imagine Youk could give Lowell a breather against the occasional rightie. Here's hoping Gonzalez didn't dip into the Carlos Pena PEDs.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Also Portland taxpayers won't pay for a stadium either. The Marlins may actually have nowhere to go.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

As much as the players union does not want it to happen, I think it would be good for baseball to contract a few clubs.

They should merge Tampa and Miami into one team and have a reverse draft with the leftover players.

With the right owners and marketing, I think Indianapolis could support a major league club, but the two Chicago teams and especially Cincinnatti would never let it happen. It would also be sticky as the long running minor league Indianapolis Indians franchise (founded in 1902) would be deep sixed and it does draw very well.

Indy tried to get a club back when the Rockies and Marlins came into the game and had a pretty good name "Indianapolis Arrows" and some sharp looking uniforms drawn up playing off of the Indianapolis Indians colors and style.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

The Sacramento Rivercats (Oakland's AAA affiliate) led the minors in attendance last year, actually for like the 5th or 6th year in a row with between 750k - 800k/yr. over that period. That's roughly 2/3rds of Tampa's 2005 paid attendance (not to mention higher than Montreal's avg.).

Not that California needs another ballclub, but hey how about that Billy Beane!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Garrett Martin (Garrett Martin), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

No idea how practical it is, but a team settling down in the Triangle area of North Carolina would be pretty awesome. Might unsettle a ton of minor league teams, though.

ESPN reports Thome for Rowand imminent...

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Indy also draws pretty well, they have had over 600,000 per year since they opened the new Victory Field in 1999. Their ballpark is great.

I wonder how much cash the Phils are going to eat out of Thome's contract. With that trade, it looks like the Sox must be giving up on Konerko. Is the Big Hurt done? He obviously cannot stay healthy, but I would hate to see him hanging on someplace else.

Carolina has their own league, which is a bit different than some places.

Another possibility I have heard is moving the Marlins to NJ, which I cannot see the Mets, Phils or Yanks wanting to happen.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

I was wondering about NJ.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

With that trade, it looks like the Sox must be giving up on Konerko.

If this is the Sox's "strategy", then it makes no sense. Why give up on Konerko (presumably because they feel he will be too expensive) for a guy who makes MORE money, is worse defensively at the same position, has had major injury problems, and won't be much more productive than Konerko even if he IS healthy?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, maybe they are going to surgically put together one healthy player out between Thome and The Big Hurt. I don't get it either, even if they resign Konerko, they will still have to find a center fielder and Rowand is pretty good with the glove, so whatever they get will probably be a down grade in that instance.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

I thought Posednik (sp?) was in Cf?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

I'd think this means goodbye to Frank, unless they can't resign Konerko. Thome's about ready to be a full-time DH, anyway.

So, now that Thome's in Chicago, where does the Hurt go? Minnesota? Can Morneau play the field, or is he strictly a DH?

Garrett Martin (Garrett Martin), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

If Frank came cheap enough, you'd think Beane would maybe be thrilled to have him in the middle of the line-up.

Garrett Martin (Garrett Martin), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't be shocked if the A's take a gamble on Thomas.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

And obv Podsednik will be the CF if Rowand leaves. Left field isn't that hard to replace.

if true, great deal for phils. howard is definitely where they're at at first and rowand would slot in nicely in their outfield. i wonder whether the chitchat about dealing abreu and/or burrell is still valid?

I don't think it's a bad idea for the White Sox to take this gamble, because they really did need more offense and Thome could give it and maybe stay healthy at DH, but giving up Rowand to do Philadelphia a favor is pure insanity.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 24 November 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

I just think if they wanted to gamble, they could have resigned Konerko for 4Y for less money than they'll pay Thome. Or try to resign Thomas at DH for another year or two, rather than be committed to Thome for another four.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 24 November 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

So is Juan Pierre a cub?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 24 November 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Hang on, Thome only has three years left on his contract (not four), and the Phillies are going to pay $22M of the remaining $43.5M. That changes things quite a bit. If the White Sox can get two good, relatively injury-free years from Thome then it's almost worth it -- particularly compared to the risks of resigning Thomas for the same time period.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 24 November 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

"worth it" = "worth $7M/yr" (what they lose in defense with trading Rowand + loss of offense or defense from whoever ends up playing first is another matter).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 24 November 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to see Minnesota beat that!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 25 November 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

I somehow don't think Thome is as much of a party hound as Mo Vaughn.

From many things I have read, Rowand is great fielding centerfielder and there have been some questions about Posednik's arm strength. I'm sure Posednik has the speed to get the job done, but it is still probably a step down.

At this point, I don't think you can count on much from The Big Hurt. Like Juan Gone and Bagwell, he seems to be too far beat up physically to hold up for a whole season. Thome might get this way, but other than last season, he has not missed that much time.

You never can count on how good a bullpen will be year to year, but adding Mota to the group has to make it the deepest in the AL.

Would Philly really deal away Bobby Abreu? He is going to be 32 next year and might be near the end of a contract, so maybe they are trying to get what they can for them.

I read something that the Yanks have expressed interest in getting Ichiro from Seattle. I don't see what NY really has to offer and I doubt the M's would really want to let go of such a solid and popular player.

Beckett deal finalized. Red Sox threw in somebody named Harvey Garcia and got back...Guillermo Mota?!

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Friday, 25 November 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

!?!?!?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 25 November 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

By the sounds of things, the Red Sox questioned Beckett's health and threatened to pull out of the deal unless the Marlins dealt Mota (a likely arbitration case who made $2.6 million in 2005).

So in other words:

Red Sox get:

Josh Beckett, p
Mike Lowell, 3b
Guillermo Mota, p

Marlins get:

Hanley Ramirez, ss
Anibal Sanchez, p
Jesus Delgado, p
Harvey Garcia, p

Delgado is a decent righty power prospect who had Tommy John surgery when he was 18 and hasn't really ever put up overpowering numbers in rookie ball or the Sally league.

Garcia throws hard and put up good K/9 numbers in Greenville last year, but is lightly regarded within the organization.

Yowza.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Friday, 25 November 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

I think the Marlins are doing the right thing... they never should have signed Delgado or resigned Lowell in the first place. But they're not getting enough value back for Beckett. I think the Delgado deal is a steal.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 25 November 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Joe Girardi must wonder why he took the Marlin's manager job. You have to wonder if Girardi knew they were going to get rid of everyone before he was hired. If he didn't know they were going to cut everyone, I'd imagine he would be pretty pissed.

For some reason I was thinking Mota was going to the White Sox. That Red Sox trade might end up one of those really lopsided trades down the line that ends up in alltime bad trade lists. Boston needs pitching of all types, so I suppose Mota couldn't hurt.

Cabrera can be a nightmare in right, so I would imagine he will be boot central at third. I'm sure he will be real motivated now.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 27 November 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't JP Riccardi supposed to be one of the smart ones?

In fact, the Prospectus annual's Blue Jays article last spring was about some dumb moves they had made (eg Koskie) and how there should be no such thing as a "sabermetrically approved franchise." Few teams adhere to such principles consistently enough to get near such a category.

Nate Silver made a numbers-oriented case on BP last week that this Marlins teardown can be justified by the numbers, ie they would likely not win anything by retaining the core they had.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

The Rangers are after Juan Pierre now. Hahahahahaha

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

"Nate Silver made a numbers-oriented case on BP last week that this Marlins teardown can be justified by the numbers, ie they would likely not win anything by retaining the core they had."

Baseball-wise this is probably true, but it's still not exactly good business sense to be seen (esp. in Florida) as having a huge fire sale where every player must go.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

Silver's article *was* very business-based ... it basically looked at the upside and downside in wins that they might expect based on their 2005 talent, versus the same for their post-fire sale talent. Then he estimates their expected $M/win they would expect to spend by retaining their 2005 core, and concludes that it isn't worth the extra cash.

The problem with his reasoning is that the expected win distributions are probably broad enough to justify a fire sale by almost any team. The other problem, like Alex said, is that it demoralises the fan base (incl. season ticket holders and possible sponsors), particularly only two years removed from a World Series win (and it's not like the 2003 club cost megabucks). But Loria wants out of Florida anyway so he can get to work on ruining baseball in a third city, so fuck him.

Sheehan argues vs Marlins at BP:

I am absolutely certain that the Florida Marlins will not exist in 2009. What I do not yet know is whether they will be the Las Vegas Nouns, or whether this is the first step towards contraction in 2007. It is very easy for me to see a scenario where the Marlins and the Kansas City Royals cease to exist, and quite frankly, few people care. The Royals have little to no hope of being competitive in the next five years, and are being administered in a way that calls to mind the phrase "make them as comfortable as you can."

I have to think that Barry Zito is going to be traded.

I doubt that Juan Cruz ever gets out of the bullpen. Cruz would look good for the first inning or two as a starter, but then would be completely out of gas after three when he was with the Cubs.

It happened a couple of days ago, but the Cubs also added a 31 year old ROOGY named Bobby Howry for a three year deal. I've never seen this guy pitch, but his numbers for the past two years in Cleveland look OK. Howry doesn't strike out very many people. Ho hum...we will see. LaTroy Hawkins looked like a good signing at the time and he had better numbers than either of these new guys.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

First baseman Paul Konerko and the White Sox have agreed to a five-year, $60 million deal, the team announced Wednesday. The deal also includes a limited no-trade clause, sources told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark.

The Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday night that Konerko rejected a five-year, $65 million deal offered by the Orioles.

The other team after Konerko, Los Angeles Angels, reportedly offered a five-year, $60 million contract. The Los Angeles Times reported that Konerko met with Angels officials, including manager Mike Scioscia and general manager Bill Stoneman, in Anaheim on Tuesday.

A source told Stark that the White Sox had recently jumped back into active negotiations with Konerko. And according to another source who has been in frequent contact with the White Sox, the team was simply laying back to let someone else establish Konerko's market value -- with the understanding that if Chicago matched the years and came reasonably close on the dollars, Konerko would re-sign with the White Sox. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Lo Duca and his GIANT HEART to Mets. Kee-ripe, can't throw and with about a third of Piazza's current power.

I hope they trade Izzy and keep Hee Seop. Maybe Im still jaded because of Jim Tracy's insistence in batting Izzy 1st instead of 8th. I also wouldnt be upset if they traded Kent. I mean, whatever team they throw together wont be a CONTENDER and Kent's value isnt going to get any higher. I also hope they keep Bradley. Our OF is fucking terrible.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Monday, 5 December 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

I think this will be the second time Lo Duca has replaced Piazza. Didn't Lo Duca become the starter in LA after the Dodgers shipped Piazza to the Mets?

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 5 December 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

And this is WHO they dealt for LoDuca... From MLB.com's Kevin Czerwinki:

Hard-throwing right-hander Gaby Hernandez was one of the precious few arms New York had in its system. New York chose the Miami native in the third round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft out of Belen Jesuit High School and he has, for the most part, looked impressive.

Hernandez split this season between Class A Hagerstown of the South Atlantic League (6-1, 2.43 ERA in 18 starts) and Class A St. Lucie of the Florida State League (2-5, 5.74 ERA in 10 starts). He tossed a no-hitter to clinch the first-half title for Hagerstown but the more experienced opposition in the Florida State League didn't have as much trouble with his lively, low-to-mid 90s fastball as did the free swingers in the Sally League, hitting 100 points higher against him (.298-.197). But he allowed only one earned run over eight innings in his last two starts, giving the indication that he was beginning to make the necessary adjustments. His strikeout-to-walk ratio (132-40) was indicative of his desire to attack hitters on the mound.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 5 December 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Someone tell Omar he doesn't have to sell off the farm system of the team he's GMing in order to be successful. Unless, of course, the plan is to play LoDuca from April to August, and then get someone else behind the plate to close out the season.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 5 December 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

CLEVELAND Dec 5, 2005 — Free-agent pitcher Paul Byrd signed a two-year, $14.25 million contract Monday with the Cleveland Indians, the club's first move in what could be a busy few days at the winter meetings in Dallas.

Byrd will make $7 million in 2006 and 2007, and the deal includes a club option for 2008 that could raise the value to $22 million over three seasons.

The 35-year-old Byrd went 12-11 with a 3.74 ERA in 31 starts for the Los Angeles Angels last season. He turned down a new deal with the Angels and offers from Baltimore, Kansas City and Texas to rejoin the Indians, who drafted him in 1991.

"We are excited to add an experienced starting pitcher to our rotation, one that represents the team we are trying to build both on and off the field," general manager Mark Shapiro said.

The Furcal deal pales in comparison to this one. Did Shapiro have a gun to his head when he said that?

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Monday, 5 December 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

FFS I was kidding about Plaschke!

Once again, the Dodgers got scooped.

They had a chance to rectify their worst player evaluation mistake in the past 25 years by regaining catcher Paul Lo Duca, whose clutch hitting and clubhouse leadership meant more than any other player in leading the Dodgers to the division title in 2004, as the team proved by shutting down in the playoffs after Lo Duca was exiled to Florida.

The Dodgers have had a gaping hole at catcher ever since Lo Duca's departure, and the real deal would have filled it more ably than free agent catchers Ramon Hernandez or Bengie Molina.

Dioner Navarro is the team's future behind the plate, but at 21, he's too raw for the team to afford to play him every day and hope to catch the Padres next year.

What's worse is that the New York Mets gave up only a minor league pitcher and another player to be named later to acquire Lo Duca, a package the Dodgers could easily have matched.

While they were at it, they could have seen if the Marlins would be willing to take on clubhouse malcontent Jeff Kent, rendered expendable with the signing of Rafael Furcal, a player who brings much-needed leadoff speed and unimpeachable character to the Dodgers' clubhouse.

so these rumors of the zito trades make ZERO sense. zito for milton bradley? zito for kevin mench? according to espn, the a's are considering both. WTF? in no way do they need an outfielder! they need a dh/1b more than anything...

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

in terms of the lo duca deal, the mets were DUMBDUMBDUMB not to sign hernandez. dude is a great catcher. minaya needs to learn that they don't need a name at every position a la los steinbrenners, they need DEPTH. my fave move of the mets this offseason was signing tike redman. tho i like delgado i think they'll regret that next season. same with wagner. and i actually thought cameron was worth keeping. and even if yr gonna deal him, pls get someone w/ some upside ie NOT xavier fucking nady. and why the fuck do you deal benson out of that pitching rotation? is hanging onto victor zambrano some way of trying to validate the kazmir trade?

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

There are Kent-to-Mets rumors!

Pardon me, Jams, while I revive the Anna Benson thread...

A's let Hatteberg go, right?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of Ms. Anna, these quotes (via BP) are pure gold:

"We would never, ever have signed with New York if they had said they were going to trade us. I was Miss [Politically Correct] for the Mets the entire time I was there."
--Anna Benson, wife of Mets pitcher Kris Benson (New York Daily News)

"I have no deal with Playboy."
--Benson, responding to the allegation that the Mets are trying to trade her husband because she has a deal to pose in Playboy

"How are they going to sit there and say it's so controversial when they sign someone like Delgado, who turns his back on our flag?"
--Benson

"Playboy is all-American. Everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Cindy Crawford has posed. They didn't turn their back on the flag."
--Benson

The Furcal deal pales in comparison to this one. Did Shapiro have a gun to his head when he said that?

I'm not sure Byrd's deal is any sillier than the one the A's gave to Esteban Loiaza. Both of those guys have had about 2.4 decent seasons (cumulatively) throughout their careers and were signed for about the same amount of money.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Well, that's all the Anna gold thar! Presumably dumping Benson could be a prelude for Mets getting Javier Vasquez.

"A's let Hatteberg go, right?"

I also like the Furcal deal! Mainly cuz it is short. Sure $13 million is a lot of money, but it's probably better than a 4 or 5 year deal for slightly less money.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

The A's need a powerful righty DH more than a 1B actually. Johnson's respectable at 1st and Swisher can platoon there occassionally.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Mike Piazza could be a good pick up for either the A's or Angels. They could let him DH most of the time and catch once or twice a week, which I think is a pretty handy combo to have.

Burnett with the Jays for 5 years and $55 million. Absurd.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

I might have been happy about that if they hadn't already given a similar contract to BJ Fucking Ryan (although the Burnett deal isn't official yet).

I'm surprised that Burnett's agent didn't up his price after a bunch of closers were given 10M. If Loiaza is worth 7M/yr, then Burnett is worth more than 11M/yr.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't be shocked if Loiaza outperforms Burnett considerably this year at the very least, but I suppose for pure $$$ vs. potential you are probably correct. Burnett's not Carl Pavano, but he's also not Curt Schilling. NL pitchers don't always adjust to the AL that well.

A's get 22y/o Chad Gaudin from the Jays (who Toronto released to make room for BJ) for a PTBNL. Gaudin put up some intriguing minor league #s over the last few years (although his September call-up #s are getting increasingly worse):

Minor league totals:
ERA: 2.83
WHIP: 1.15
K/9: 7.86
K/BB: 3.16

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

Yep, here's his 2005 minor league season recap:

2005 Syracuse SkyChiefs (TOR AAA-aff.)
23 Games Started
150.1 IP (6.5 IP/start, 2 CG SHO)
9W - 8L
ERA: 3.35
WHIP: 1.16
K: 113
BB: 35
K/9: 6.77
K/BB: 3.23

I believe that Oakland will have rights to Gaudin until 2010 (unless I don't understand this completely, feel free to correct me).

On top of all this, the A's are reportedly pursuing both Milton Bradley and Frank Thomas "very aggressively", whatever that means.

It's been a great offseason for trades and trade rumours though!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

A damaged-goods rumor from Will Carroll:

"The other interesting rumor of the day involved the Red Sox and their recent acquisition, Josh Beckett. As the rumor circulated, the Red Sox had found something in Beckett’s MRI that forced a recision. According to several sources, this was not only not true but not even possible. Trades follow certain rules and procedures and while there are mechanisms for returning damaged goods, they usually take place during the trade. One where outside physicians were consulted hardly seems one where something could sneak by and MRIs are as reliable as the boozy blonde wandering between Common Ground and Gossip, the aptly named bar in the Anatole."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

I do not understand that analogy.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

I think it loses something outta context.

Here's Joe Sheehan with hemlock for Jays fans:

you look a little deeper and you realize that the Blue Jays aren’t even getting the guy you see in the stat lines. Burnett has a significant and persistent home/road split, one that cuts across his entire performance record. His career ERA at Dolphins Stadium and its aliases is 3.20; everywhere else in the world, it’s 4.26. ...His strikeout-to-walk ratio, home-run rate and IP/start all show similar trends.

... We’ve made a lot of progress in player projection, but there aren’t 20 players in all of organized baseball I can point to and say, “they’re going to be good for the next five years.” There certainly aren’t five pitchers about whom I can make that claim. The Jays have made a $100-million bet that they’ve identified two, and given that this is an organization that has shown a persistent inability to identify its problems or acquire reasonable solutions, I have no reason to think that they know something about Ryan and Burnett that no one else does. The likelihood, the strong likelihood, is that the Jays are going to be paying these two guys $24 million or so in 2010 for something like 88 innings of 5.12 ball.

...It’s really not a matter of whether the Devil Rays will pass the Blue Jays in the AL East, just a question of when. To look at how these two franchises, each caught in a difficult competitive environment, have chosen to tackle the problem, is to see the difference between the game’s past and its present, between money as a panacea and money as a tool.

Between getting it and not.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

The Jays have gone from stathead princes to stathead pariahs in a very short time!

Sheehan's being needlessly pessimistic. Did he throw a shitfit when the A's signed Danny Haren to a long term deal? Isn't Blanton also locked up for a few more years? Sure, they're not getting as much money, but teams take 5-6 year gambles with pitchers all the time. If they're young, then it's a defensible move. OTOH, if you're going to be paying $15M to Kevin Brown when he's 40, then it's not.

The Jays DID need to spend money to get a good starter. They did NOT need to spend money to get a good closer.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Oh come on the Haren or Harden (or Blanton when it comes) signings are completely different than the Burnett signing. These guys are all five years younger, first of all. And Haren and Harden's TOTAL four/five year deals are both for about $20+/- million a piece (there are some option years tagged on at the ends, I think.) The difference between $20 or so million and $55 million is pretty big, esp. taking into account Burnett's age, injuries, park factors and the NL/AL switch. Sure the Blue Jays needed a good starter, but they way overpaid for a guy who may not even be that.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

[x-post!]

Sheehan's caveat seems to imply that Burnett's established lack of durability makes a 5-year commitment the sort of gamble a mid-level team can't afford to make. Never mind the cost! In comparison:

Haren - 4 years, $12.65 M
Harden - 4 years, $9 M

BIG difference.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

You are right, I completely overestimated how much those two deals were worth. Basically one year of AJ Burnett is the SAME as four years of Haren AND Harden!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

All I'm saying is that Sheehan's argument boils down to "never commit to any pitcher for five years, EVER." At some point, you have to commit to somebody. I'm not saying that Burnett is worth $55M, but he is the best free agent pitcher out there, and during the regular season the general consensus was that if he's finally healthy (a big if, but he's now reaching the age when they shouldn't have to baby his arm so much -- again, if he's healthy) the team that lands him could very well have a perennial Cy Young contender on their hands.

Dr. Morbius cut out the more pertinent part of Sheehan's mini-rant, namely, that the Jays haven't done anything to improve their offense this offseason. They're a team without a lot of power and a streaky offense (= impatient, low OBP) that plays in a homer-friendly park. Their top four starters (Halladay, Burnett, Chacin, Towers) might be the best front four in the league next year, but if the team can't hit ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

What was Halladay sidelined w/ last year? Ain't much of a front four if the top two could Kerry Wood the season.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Halladay had his leg broken by a comebacker. His arm is fine.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Damn. And I was all set to start calling him the Canadian JD Drew.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

The Canadian JD Drew was, is, and always will be Larry Walker.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

"All I'm saying is that Sheehan's argument boils down to "never commit to any pitcher for five years, EVER.""

But it doesn't! What it boils down to is that gambling $100 million dollars that you have identified TWO pitchers who are going to be good for the next five years is a POOR gamble. Those Haren and Harden deals are gambles, too, but compare what Beane is risking to what Ricciardi is. These guys are playing with completely different stakes.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

I forgot about Millwood. Their career ERA's are nearly identical, but considering the ballparks each guys has played in, advantage Millwood. Millwood is two years older, and has had an inconsistent career (with injuries, same as Burnett), but was better than Burnett in 2005.

Millwood's asking price just went up, that's for sure (who is chasing Millwood now, anyway?)

good question on javy. it's hard to guess how dealable he might be. compared to what's available on the open market if the o's get hernandez, he's better offensively than ausmus and is still a viable option behind the plate, so that would give him a leg up on piazza, but i'd imagine the health issues might be a concern and age would be, but i think there's only year (two max) left on his current contract.

Yeah, I guess the deal would be:

Renteria to Hotlanta
Andy Marte to the D-Rays
Julio Lugo to the Beanpot

Lugo'd be a great off-day utility guy, too. Maybe they can bring back Nomah and pay him a couple million to get 300+ ABs.

I'll believe the Atlanta/Boston/Sucktown three-way when I read about it here. I think it's more likely we see a straight-up Marte for Renteria and dollars swap. What the hell is Tampa thinking, demanding more than just Marte for Lugo? That's just silly talk. I thought Chuck Lamar was panhandling out on Dale Mabry, not still running a genuine baseball club.

Perusing the Sam Horn message board leads me to believe that Boston fans don't realize the dangers in dealing with Schuerholz. Other than Schmidt and Dye, none of the top prospects dealt away by Atlanta these last 15 years have amounted to much of anything. There's still time with Wainwright, Capellan, and Meyer, but none of them have advanced from where they were when they were traded. If the Braves are so big on shopping Marte, there must be something we don't know about him.

Atlanta's other options in left are Kelly Johnson and Ryan Langerhans. Johnson takes a walk, Langerhans is a good defender, but neither would be anybody's first choice. Rosenthal reports that the Braves are talking to Nomar, probably to play left or first base, but who knows what the hell is going on. Sanders would make sense, but he blew it his one previous year in Atlanta. There's some speculation they might try Betemit out there if they trade for a shortstop.

Garrett Martin (Garrett Martin), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Gammons was freestyling on ESPN news a couple of days ago on possibilities for trading Manny and said it was unlikely, as it would take some huge multiteam trade to make it happen because of the money. Sneaky Pete G then freestyled big deals with Richie Sexton going to Boston, Manny to NY and Cliff Floyd and prospects from both teams going to Seattle or putting Troy Glaus in for Sexton and the prospects going to Arizona.

PG said he figures Ortiz will talk him into another season in Boston and Manny will be Manny in the end.

DALLAS -- The Tigers worked to finalize a $16 million, two-year agreement with Kenny Rogers on Thursday in a deal that will give Detroit a 41-year-old All-Star left-hander it hopes can provide veteran leadership to a young rotation.

Rogers' decision to sign with the Tigers was first reported by the Detroit Free Press on its Web site.

A person involved in the negotiations, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced, said the sides were in the process of completing an agreement that would pay Rogers $8 million each season. After the deal is put on paper, Rogers will have to pass a physical.

"We've made some progress," Tigers president Dave Dombrowski said Thursday, refusing to confirm the deal.

We're pretty happy about this trade, except for my son, who is gutted because the Brewers traded both his favorite players this year (Overbay and Junior Spivey); brings us a potential starter, a good utility infielder, and a maybe bullpen guy. I hope Lyle gets mad paid by yr Birds, BB; it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy, but we got Prince Fielder just WAITING to bust some shots out the park.

Also, we don't mind getting Danny Kolb back, considering we got Jose Capellan for him last year and only had to give up stinky Wes Obermueller. Kolb is a Milwaukee guy and he will return to form. CLOSER BATTLE PERHAPS with him and Turnbow, but right now he'll be a great set-up mang.

Brett (Elderon, WI): Joe, what's your thoughts on the Brewers headed into 2006? Heard you call them a sleeper on MLB Radio - are they a bonafide contender for the Wild Card if the Astros plummet because of run-scoring woes? Thanks.

Joe Sheehan: The Brewers would be better served by not getting caught up in the hype and planning for 2007 and beyond. They are likely a .500 team right now, and pushing too hard in '06 could hurt their chances to have a real run atop the Central.

The Melvin-led front office really knows what it's doing, though. They draft well, they develop pretty well, and they haven't made mistakes at the major-league level. It's a well-run franchise right now.

ElAngelo (NY, NY): I don't think the swag the Brewers got for Overbay was awful, but was that really the best they could have done?

Joe Sheehan: Think about what Overbay is: a first baseman without a ton of upside, without great secondary skills. He's 29, about to get expensive, and may not age well due to his size and lack of speed.

Don't underrate the package, either. David Bush should have made 32 starts for the Jays this year. He's kind of a Jeff Suppan, league-average innings-eater, if left alone. Given that the Brewers had to deal Overbay, that alone is good return.

Jim (TB): How could you allude that the rays will soon be better than the Jays when you know nothing about how a rookie GM is going to do. Plus the rookie GM is taking over from the worst GM in history and their 2nd starter is Mark Hendrickson.

Joe Sheehan: Actually, I do. See, the Rays are putting together a team of smart guys, from Gerry Hunsicker and Andrew Friedman down through the support staff. It's not about one guy making the calls, but using everyone's skill set to make the right decisions over time.

Given that approach, plus the talent in the system already in place from years of drafting in the top five, and there's a whole lot of upside here. The money will be there as well, when it's needed, as Stuart Sternberg is capitalized well enough to make the investments, as he's going now with Tropicana Field.

The Brewers and Devil Rays are bookworthy teams, the ones we'll be talking about in the latter half of this decade.

So is Corey Hart no longer in Milwaukee's 3B plans at all? I know they moved him to the outfield a couple years ago, but I thought he was back at third at AAA this year.

A couple seasons ago I had Hardy and Hart on my fantasy team's minor league squad, and dreamed of getting the entire future Milwaukee infield. Unfortunately Fielder and Weeks were impossible to acquire.

Garrett Martin (Garrett Martin), Friday, 9 December 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Corey Hart might play some 1B this year, and get some time at 3rd, but mostly he's a utility OF. Bill Hall proved a lot last year, and Hart didn't exactly light it up in his limited action.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 9 December 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

More from Sheehan on the Jays:

I'm going to be surprised if the Jays identify and play their best infield, while also getting some value for the guys who aren't in that group.

The Jays still need at least two bats. They're trying very hard.

Completely OTM. I'm a bit shocked that he can have them pegged so well, yet still trot out BS lines like "it's not a matter of if the DRays will pass the Jays in the standings, but when ... some teams get it, some don't ..."

Whatever. BP has had a lingering distaste for the Jays ever since the Koskie signing, and recent events have sent emotions running a little high. The problems with the Koskie signing were:

1) overpaying for an average player
2) signing a player at a position where they already had some depth

They may have overpaid for Ryan and Burnett, but they did fill two gaping holes in their pitching staff and didn't trade away their future in order to do it (yeah yeah, draft pick compensation, but they didn't give up any *current* prospects in their system). You read Sheehan's comments and you'd think they'd been doing this for years and had completely emptied their farm system, like the Yankees.

just so you know, miguel tejada has done to my outlook on the upcoming season what it usually takes about 3.5 months of futile orioles baseball to do.

thanks a lot, asshole.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Saturday, 10 December 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

i would think the fact that the orioles have made like zero pitching moves would have done that already. (Kline for Hawkins doesn't count.)

not that you're entirely wrong, but i enjoy the dance of self delusion.

if the o's were having trouble signing dudes before, though, having your star player ask for a trade certainly isn't going to help things.

When I saw the headline, I figured the Mets signed John Franco again for two more years.

I thought the same thing.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 11 December 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

(actually i'm pretty sure john franco is retiring, or retired.)

a few franco factoids courtesy of mlb.com's marty noble:

• His new manager has been retired as a player for 13 years -- yet Franco's first 11 seasons in the Majors (1982-1992) were Willie Randolph's last 11 seasons.

• Franco's first All-Star Game -- 1989 in Anaheim -- was Randolph's last. Franco was the Most Valuable Player in the All-Star Game 16 years ago.

• Franco made his Major League debut on April 23, 1982, before David Wright (born Dec. 20, 1982) and Jose Reyes (June 11, 1983) were born. Playing for a Phillies team that included Pete Rose, he faced a Cardinals team that included Keith Hernandez and Ken Oberkfell, now the manager of the Mets' Norfolk affiliate.

• He broke into the big leagues two years before Dwight Gooden, and he still is playing now that Gooden is eligible for Hall of Fame consideration (following the mandatory five-year waiting period for inclusion on the ballot).

• When Franco played his first game in the Minor Leagues -- for Butte in 1978 -- Pedro Martinez was six years old, Carlos Delgado and Cliff Floyd were five, and Carlos Beltran was one. And John Franco couldn't vote.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 December 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

Peter King way OTM:

Manny Ramirez for Miguel Tejada makes so much sense it'll never happen. Manny can go hit 53 homers in a place where the games don't matter, which is just what he wants. Tejada can play in a place where all 617 at-bats feel like playoff at-bats, which is just what he wants.

Tangentially related: four-game Sox Pax went on sale this weekend. All of the weekend and Mets/Yankees packs sold out before I could get into the website (the worst-kept secret in Boston is how many ticket packages wind up in the hands of brokers and scalpers, despite the team's earnest efforts to ensure otherwise), but I managed to grab two seats way the hell back in section 4 for the following games:

April 19 (Devil Rays)
May 23 (Yankees)
June 19 (Nationals)
September 29 (Orioles)

Total cost: $241. Still, if anybody finds themselves in Boston one of these days this summer, let's catch a game.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

The Yanks are also interested in trading for Miguel Tejada to play centerfield and talking to the White Sox about Juan Uribe to play second. The new mandate from The Boss is that they want a "Jeter" at every position. The Yankees were interested in signing Julio Franco, but called off negotiations as it was discovered he had not played SS since Reagan was President.

BOFFO LAFFS!

MINNEAPOLIS - The Twins are bringing Tony Batista back to the States.

After searching for a third baseman since the season ended back in October, the Twins finally found their man. The club signed Batista to a one-year deal on Thursday, though the terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Yay! Bring on the career .298 on-base percentage!

disco violence (disco violence), Friday, 16 December 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Haha whoops, quoted the Twins page. The comedy comes via the Strib, who sez:

Batista might provide power, but he also has some head-scratching traits. His career on-base percentage is .298. And he doesn't have a lot of range at third, although he has good hands and a good arm.

"He's got the most unique set of stats," Ryan said. "He keeps driving in runs and keeps hitting the ball over the fence, but there are some things that don't equate. It's not ideal, but you're getting a tradeoff here."

UNIQUE

Johnny Damon and the Yankees have agreed to a four-year, $52 million deal, Newsday has learned.

Damon, who played the last four season with the Boston Red Sox, will replace Yankees veteran Bernie Williams in centerfield. He also gives the Yankees a natural leadoff hitter and allows Derek Jeter to hit in the No. 2 spot.

The left-handed hitting Damon turned down the salary arbitration offer from the Red Sox earlier in the day, thus freeing him to negotiate with any team, including the Red Sox.

Damon hit .316 with 10 home runs and 75 RBIs last season and stole 18 bases.

Free-agent right-hander Sidney Ponson, who last week served a five-day jail sentence for drunken driving, has agreed to a one-year contract with the Cardinals, FOXSports.com has learned.

Ponson, 29, will give the Cardinals additional depth in their starting rotation, increasing the chances that the team will trade a starting pitcher for a second baseman or corner outfielder.

Joe Sheehan:

"The Red Sox could actually end up huge winners here. There’s a rumor making the rounds that they’re trying to deal Matt Clement to the Mariners for Jeremy Reed. If they can do that, they will have replaced Damon with, essentially, a Damon Starter Kit, complete with functional arm and 25-year-old legs, and saved $20 million a year in the process. The Sox may feel they don’t have the rotation depth to make a deal like this, but the available pool of pitchers is deeper than the available pool of center fielders, and the cost savings could go a long way come midseason. If they get Reed, they’ll never miss Damon."

I can't blame Millwood for asking for a contract similar to Burnett's (even if both guys will end up being overpaid). It's a seller's market for free agent pitching, that's for sure.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

I have never understood why Hudson was the subject of so many trade rumours. He's a decent hitter and the best defensive second basemen in the league. You'd think that combination was easy to come by.

OTOH, overpaid players making $10M per season are very easy to come by for the Blue Jays. They've got this down to a science.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

On the bright side, BUH BYE BATISTA. Too bad we couldn't get them to take Hillenbrand as part of this deal, then we could have bragged that we got Arizona to accept *two* players back to Arizona not two years after dealing them the first time.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/features/freeagents

I got wondering who was left on the free agent market and found this site at ESPN charting who signed where and who was left.

Considering how much Millwood, Burnett and starting pitchers are getting, I have to think Jeff Weaver is going to get way overpaid by someone. I am suprised Weaver is only 29.

I'm also suprised Preston Wilson wasn't coming up in discussion for the Yank centerfield job or other teams needing someone out in center. He is not great, but you could do worse. I would rather have Wilson than Encarnacion, which the Cards just signed.

Richard Hidalgo and Jeromy Burnitz are both still available. I figure if Hidalgo has another decent season at the plate left, it will be next year. That guy is one of the most up and down players of recent years and I am sure drove Astro fans batty going from good to terrible in consecutive years. Burnitz wasn't as bad as I figured he would be for the Cubs, but he is getting old.

What team is going to sign Julian "Yeah I'm Nuts" Tavarez. I'm sure there are some people looking for bullpen help considering making a deal with that looney. I think it would be fun if he pitched in NY or Boston, so that is where I hope he ends up.

Is it just me or everytime I see veteran reliever Jay Powell's name listed, I keep thinking he is Jay Howell and think "Damn, that guy is still pitching".

Haikunym (Haikunym), Saturday, 7 January 2006 19:58 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, I kind of expected more.

But Koskie's trade value was virtually nil due to a combination of injury, inflated contract, and massive on-field suckage. The fact the Jays ditched over half his salary and cleared the roster spot (he was arguably their worst regular last year, so giving his AB's so somebody else this year will improve the club) is a boost to the team.

Orioles agree to deal with Millar

BALTIMORE (AP) -- First baseman Kevin Millar agreed to a $2.1 million, one-year contract Thursday with the Baltimore Orioles, who hope the former Boston Red Sox star can provide leadership and some punch in the lineup.

"I see him playing a lot of first base, designated hitter and in the outfield," Orioles first-year manager Sam Perlozzo said. "We get a guy with playoff experience, someone who was part of a World Series team. We can use that kind of player in our clubhouse. It gives us a little chemistry."

The 34-year-old Millar, who can make an additional $2.6 million in performance bonuses, hit .276 with 25 home runs and 96 RBIs with the Red Sox in 2003. It was during that season that he coined the phrase, "Cowboy Up!" -- which became Boston's battle cry in September and into the playoffs.

Millar also fell in love with the with the intense competition of the AL East, and the opportunity to stay in the division made Baltimore his first choice among the teams that tried to sign him.

"This division is where you want to be as a baseball player. There's nothing like it," Millar said. "It's like 162 playoff games."

Millar batted .297 with 18 homers and 74 RBIs for the World Series champions in 2004, but his production dropped last year, when he hit .272 with nine homers and 50 RBIs. He did, however, remain a leader in the Boston clubhouse, and he hopes to do the same in Baltimore.

"I like people. I like my teammates. I can't stand cliques," Millar said. "I'm not a very good player, but I will bring a presence (where) there's not many cliques. If there's an intangible, I bring that intangible."

"Kevin will be missed," Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield said. "He was the guy that always kept things light and humorous and funny. Baltimore is getting a pretty good hitter and a great teammate, a guy that makes things fun."

Most of all, the Orioles want Millar's right-handed swing to bolster a lineup that struggled to score in 2005.

"It's certainly a piece that helps us along the way," Perlozzo said. "We're starting to fill some holes."

Millar is a career .289 batter over 932 games and exactly 3,000 at-bats. He has 111 homers and 471 RBIs.

In six full major league seasons, he has averaged 17 home runs and 67 RBIs. He is a career .302 hitter with runners in scoring position, and has a career on-base percentage of .365. He hopes to see a return to those sorts of numbers in 2006.

"I expect myself to have a way better year, statistically," Millar said. "I think Fenway, to an extent, got me pull-happy. I started trying to pull every solitary pitch possible."

Primarily a first baseman during his three years in Boston -- he made 102 starts at first base last year, with 12 starts each in left and right field -- Millar has played 425 games at first and 352 in the outfield. He also has appeared in 28 games at third base.

Orioles executive vice president Mike Flanagan conceded that Millar and Jeff Conine -- also signed by Baltimore this offseason -- are similar players, but he said their presence would improve a clubhouse that became tense and fractious in the second half of 2005, when Rafael Palmeiro was suspended for using steroids and the team plummeted in the standings.

"It was an extroverted ballclub that became just the opposite the second half of the season, so it's been a conscious effort to make sure we can try to maintain that energy," Flanagan said.

Sheehan, Prospectus:

Jeff Weaver should get the kind of money that’s been doled out to Jarrod Washburn and Matt Morris, because he’s been just as good a pitcher. If a team can bring him into the fold for less, and especially if they can limit their commitment to two years, they will have picked up a significant edge on the teams that have paid mid-rotation starters like aces all winter long. Look for Weaver to be the 2006 version of Millwood or Loaiza, the late signing, the forgotten one, who has a significant impact on the season and makes big money next winter.

All winter long, the Orioles have talked about adding an arm to their starting rotation. That talk turned into action Saturday, when Baltimore dealt Jorge Julio and John Maine to the New York Mets in exchange for Kris Benson.

The trade has been confirmed by sources in both clubs and a formal announcement is expected later this afternoon.

maura (maura), Saturday, 21 January 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

i'm not sure how i feel about this. maine's progress had seemed to have stalled and julio is a bit of an enigma. i guess benson has experience and is probably a modest upgrade over what the o's had in the rotation last year, but the dropoff in k and spike in tacos is a bit of a concern. i mean...that's getting 1/2 his starts in shea. yikes.

With the return of Theo Epstein all but formalized, the Red Sox now appear on the verge of concluding a heretofore tumultuous offseason by acquiring both center fielder Coco Crisp and shortstop Alex Gonzalez.

And not a moment too soon.

According to baseball sources, the Red Sox and Cleveland Indians have agreed in principle on a deal that will bring outfielder Crisp to the Sox in a multi-player trade. The deal was agreed upon several days ago under the condition that Cleveland be able to acquire another outfielder to replace Crisp, presumably Jason Michaels from the Philadelphia Phillies.

There was some indication that the Phillies and Indians were hoping to complete the deal for Michaels as soon as last night. Cleveland was believed to be sending one of two relievers - left-hander Arthur Rhodes or right-hander Rafael Betancourt - to the Phillies in exchange for Michaels.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 23 January 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

One thing about Coco is that he has lost a lot of speed in the past 2 years, so much that he's really should not be considered a true CF (as opposed to LF).

With the loss of speed has been a bit more power, not sure if Boston needs that trade off though just yet.

Jimmy Mod (I myself am lethal at 100 -110dB) (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Monday, 23 January 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

Coco played LF most of last year for the Indians - was Sizemore CF or RF? Also, I don't see this supposed speed-for-power trade-off in his batting lines. In almost 3 full years w/ the Tribe, he's stolen 50 bases (w/ 28 CS!), and his SLG went from .446 in 2004 to .465 in 2005. Also, a lot of his on-base value is tied up in his average. And he just turned 26 in November.

Trading Edgar Renteria & cash for Coco Crisp doesn't have the same flair, I have to say.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 23 January 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

if i were the sox i'd be looking at curtis granderson (i dunno how high the tigers are on him) or craig monroe (who seems extremely attainable).

let's look at the trade this way: essentially the sox will be dealing edgar renteria and mota for crisp and his very average 287/332/424. factor in that marte will almost certainly start for the tribe and they get jason michaels' 291/380/442 to replace him and it's an absolute STEAL for cleveland. they get better at TWO positions through this.

rf michaels/blake

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 23 January 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

Also, I don't see this supposed speed-for-power trade-off in his batting lines.

Coco Crisp:

2003 pre-AS SB/PA: 5%
2003 post-AS SB/PA: 3%
2004 pre-AS SB/PA: 5%
2004 post-AS SB/PA: 3%
2005 pre-AS SB/PA: 3%
2005 post-AS SB/PA: 1%

That is what I would call a steep decline trend, basing "speed" on stolen bases per plate appearances.

2003 pre-AS SLG: .349
2003 post-AS SLG: .354
2004 pre-AS SLG: .415
2004 post-AS SLG: .472
2005 pre-AS SLG: .459

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 23 January 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

Anna Benson on Michael Moore:

"I honestly have to tell you...I hate your fucking guts. Forget about how un-American you are, how politically retarded you are, or how fat you look while slobbering your political garbage all over everyone, mainly, I despise you for the fact that you make money off of influencing the young minds of America to be Bush-haters.

You are a pariah to our nation...a fat kid that got beat up by the jocks at school, and this has formulated your hatred of America. If I didn't know any better, I would thing George W. himself went to school with you and kicked the shit out of your pie-hole everyday for being such a candy-ass. If you are so passionate about politics, use some of your blood-making money to make it a better place instead of making movies that only benefit your fat-ass fanny-pack. No one likes to see Hollywood try to engage our minds with their ridiculous and one-sided political rants during award ceremonies. Your "movies" are just a façade for your own political agenda, which, by the way, is fucking warped.

You are a selfish, pathetic excuse for an American, and you can take your big fat ass over to Iraq and get your pig head cut off and stuck on a pig pole. Then, you can have your equally as fat wife make a documentary about how loudly you squealed while terrorists were cutting through all the blubber and chins to get that 40 pound head off of you. I dare you to go to Iraq and diarrhea all over our soldiers; they would love to strip you naked in the streets and leave you so that the terrorists can pick you up and dispose of you the way terrorists do. If you believe that Iraq and Al-Queda were not together, go over there and see for yourself. "

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 23 January 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

Are those your real boobs?

"No, actually, these are not my real fun-bags. After breastfeeding three kids, I was constantly tripping over my jugs whenever I tried to walk anywhere. So, I got a much deserved boobie job. If anyone has a problem with it, they just might get slapped in the face with one of my ripe melons."

Weren’t you a stripper?

"Yes. After divorcing my ex-husband, I was a single mom who had no education. So, instead of sitting on my fat ass and collecting welfare, I decided to lie in the bed that I had made for myself and do whatever it took to take care of myself and my child. It is not something that I like to brag about, but it is definitely something that I am proud of."

defensively, that might be the best outfield in baseball!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Swisher was a bit of a stiff in the OF! That starting nine is looking pretty sweet, though, especially if their line-up looks like:

cf kotsay (S)
ss crosby (R)
lf bradley (S)
dh thomas (R)
3b chavez (L)
rf swisher (S)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

xpost: Agreed, except with Jay Payton in the OF instead of Swisher (who will be at 1B with Johnson), you get 3 true CFs out there (but perhaps the odds of a repeat of the Beltran/Cameron fiasco increase).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

I don't see Payton being remotely as productive as he was for the A's last year. I could see him getting plenty of PT, tho, if the Hurt gets hurt, or if Milton's being Milton. Hopefully, JP will hold off on the "I shd be playing full-time garbage" until he either gets his chance to play or the team gets off to such a great start that him pitching a fit will sound ridiculous.

Balance and flexibility! WIN A PLAYOFF SERIES THIS YEAR YOU BASTARDS!

Mark Ellis, who led the A's in 2005 in BA/OBP/SLG with the line of .316/.385/.477, has yet to reach an agreement with the front office. He wants $2.8M/2 years and the A's are only offering $2.2M.

Meanwhile Jason Kendall is making a zillion dollars a year.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry to play devil's advocate, but that's a hell of an injury-prone lineup. If everyone stays healthy they'll be fantastic though.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

I hope the lineup looks more like this though.

2b ellis (R)

Word on the street is that this will go to arbitration, which the A's front office has never lost.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

Ohmigod I didn't realize how little the A's are paying Thomas! 500k! Up to $2.6m of incentives! That's crazy! Why are the A's the only one willing to take a flyer on him?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

barry is right about the injury-prone thing, but there is a lot of depth there. i think it was sheehan last week who wrote something about the a's having by far the best team in baseball in terms of players 21-45 (or however many are on the regular season roster). unfortunately they will probably have to use 'em.

Actually Morbsy, Thomas' 3 past years of SLG are .562, .563, .590. Why you'd want so much SLG in the bottom of a lineup bereft of SLG doesn't make sense to me.

Noone else on the A's comes close to Thomas' power, as Chavez took a big dip last year, Ellis (hitting leadoff) led the team in SLG. I'd stick BigHurt in the #5, #4 if Chavez doesn't bounce back.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 26 January 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

1b johnson (L)
ss crosby (R)
cf kotsay (S)

*treating Kendall's 2005 as an outlier, his lifetime OBP is still massive. drop him to the 7-9 spot if he continues to struggle.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 26 January 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

Considering the A's money situation, The Big Hurt might not be a bad bet for the money. The guy has not been able to stay healthy the past two seasons, but his power has not fell off. Even if Oakland can only get a 100 games out of Thomas, they still might get 20-30 HRs. I doubt there anyone else available for that kind of money that could potentially hit for as much power.

I'd like to see Big Frank have one more good season.

Re: batting Kendall 1st - that would definitely be ideal, given his OBP, but his SLGing has become Womackian, & there are guys w/ comparable OBPs w/ more pop that deserve more ABs than Slappy McBrokenLeg.

BTW, I guess Payton's already tooting the "I plan on playing full-time" horn. Wheeee!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 January 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

heh -

Simmons: My favorite "Manny being Manny" moment happened in the final game of the regular season -- he had just crushed a home run, the cameras caught you guys sitting next to one another in the dugout, he was talking excitedly about what pitch he had hit, and somewhere along the way, you just started staring at him in disbelief, as though he had just said something like, "I knew it was going to be a slider because I started craving a pork sandwich, and that always means a slider's coming!" And you just kept staring at him, and then he walked away to another part of the dugout, and you started shaking your head in shock like, "Wow, I will never, ever, ever figure that guy out." How many of those Manny encounters happen per season?

Schilling: Three to four per day.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 26 January 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

The problem is ... which is the real Payton? The Payton from Oakland/Colorado, or the Payton from San Diego/Boston/etc.? It doesn't matter much to me if Payton is upset about it.

Now you have Swisher, Kotsay, Bradley, Johnson, Thomas, Payton in a six man rotation for five spots, which means that each of these players could theoretically play 135 games if they split the time evenly. Kielty and Charles Thomas are nice depth if someone in the of/1b/dh rotation gets traded or gets injured.

Meanwhile, Matt Watson is on the roster with a pretty sweet .305 .377 .515 at Sacramento last year.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 26 January 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

If the Coco deal goes sour, look for Payton going back to Boston in a 3-way trade.

WARNING SMALL SAMPLE SIZE AHEAD:
FT's K-rate jumped up uncharacteristically in 2005, which coupled with his 12 HRs in 100ABs sort of approaches a Rob Deer-like line... hopefully some sort of middle ground is achieved in 2006.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 27 January 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

It doesn't matter much to me if Payton is upset about it.

it will start to matter if he does what he did in boston, bitching and moaning to the press in the clubhouse then purposefully starting a fight with the manager in the dugout during a nationally televised game in an attempt to get himself in a better situation. nothing says team player like that.

so who talked shit about schilling anyway (i.e. the thing he mentions as the single worst moment of last season)? was it lowe?

lowe was gone last year so it wasn't him. it was someone still on the club. someone back in boston told me it was millar but that seems wildly out of character for him to me.

Updating a previous item:

Russell Branyan: Expected to Latch on with Tampa Bay

RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com
Thursday, January 26, 2006
Update: The Devil Rays are expected to announce Thursday that they've signed Branyan to a minor league contract with a spring training NRI, the St. Petersburg Times reports.

Recommendation: This is a good gamble by the Rays, especially given the price. Branyan posted above-league-average OPS marks of .849 and .868 in the last two seasons, so while he won't be a top-notch fantasy pick due to his relatively low batting average, he has value on a real roster. Branyan also played 59 games at third base last year for Milwaukee, so we'll see if the Rays see him as strictly a DH type or as someone who could compete with Sean Burroughs and Ty Wigginton at third base.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 27 January 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

He'll win that "competition" running away, if the D-Rays have any sense.

Ty's gonna win the positional battle (for THE RAYS) (not THE DEVIL RAYS, because DEVILS ARE EVIL), and he's gonna hit a weakass .260 that's going to make Burroughs look like Hercules, and then Branyan will get hurt in the one game he starts, and then I will die a thousand deaths.

Anna Benson makes bid to become poker impresario

By RICK FREEMAN, AP Sports Writer
January 30, 2006

Anna Benson could find herself getting plenty of face time on ESPN in the coming year. Not during baseball games, but more likely during one of the network's ubiquitous poker broadcasts.

The wife of Orioles pitcher Kris Benson has been polishing her game by playing nearly every day, whether online, on her cell phone or even live and in person. She also recently signed a deal to endorse and promote a fledgling poker Web site.

"I'm still a young little poker player. I've got a long ways to go," Benson said. "It is a thrill to me. They call it a sport now, so it's kind of cool for me to come in and be my own type of an athlete.

"I'm hoping to really amass an empire with this poker. I love to give money away to charities, to change people's lives."

Benson represents a unique kind of endorser -- she appeals to two unique groups of consumers -- those who read magazines like Maxim and FHM, and those who follow professional sports.

Benson signed a multiyear deal with Golden Spirit Poker, a company that renamed itself from Golden Spirit Mining and refocused on online gaming. She will link to the Golden Spirit site from her personal Web site, as well as have a site named for her which redirects to Golden Spirit's main site.

She plans to play her first official hand on the site Thursday night. The site lists other casino games as "coming soon" but sports gambling will not be available.

Rich Levin, spokesman for the commissioner's office, declined to comment on Benson's affiliation with Golden Spirit.

Kris Benson was recently traded to Baltimore by the New York Mets. Anna Benson had made comments critical of her husband's teammate, Carlos Delgado, and upset some in the Mets organization by wearing a racy Santa costume to the team's holiday party.

Several months before the World Series of Poker in July, Benson became interested in the game. She entered the series, was eliminated after a few days, but plans to return to Las Vegas this summer a better player.

"I'm going to get schooled on how to play by some of these big-time pros," Benson said. "I want to play well. I'm not trying to do this as a joke, I'm dead serious about playing. I'm not like some bimbo sitting down at a table."

Is that a declaration or a request, Tracer?

as someone who has heard first-hand accounts of winning lots of money from alex rodriguez at hold em, i can assure you that it is indeed a skill. even more so than running like a homosexual.

w/ the twins having now signed ruben sierra in addition to the tony "the sultan of swat" batista, i almost feel that, as an o's fan, i can laugh at somebody else's offseason.

almost.

Joe Sheehan ALMOST makes me think the Crips / Marte trade was a good idea for Boston. ALMOST. He makes valid points - Sox need a CF a LOT more than a 3B, Crisp has some upside heading into his prime & a more hitter-friendly park - but, damn, Andy Marte. If he's not starting @ third for the Tribe this year, I'm going to challenge AB to a game of horse ASAP.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 February 2006 04:09 (nineteen years ago)

rumored abreu & floyd for dye & contreras...

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 3 February 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

That is the most idiotic lopsided trade ever - if Ken Williams pulls that off, he'll have more than shed the "I'm With Stupid, And He Be Me" rep his early years as GM (and, um, Moneyball) cultivated.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 3 February 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

That can't be real.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 3 February 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

i am talking about gavin floyd, but i can't imagine gillick would do that unless something else were coming his way, too.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 3 February 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

i've heard that the deal was to be abreu for contreras, dye, and ryan sweeney, but that it's off

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 3 February 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

That's less of a good deal.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 3 February 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

Definitely!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 3 February 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

I can't envision a scenario where trading Abreu doesn't screw the Phillies.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 3 February 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

They've been trying SO HARD to trade him though!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 3 February 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

btw, Mets' official emails link to mlb.com stories dicussing 2b as "uncertain," so Kaz is toast, yeah?

Jeff Weaver, call yr agent.

Is the entire Astro front office gonna block the gate like George Wallace when Bagwell tries to enter camp in 3 weeks?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 3 February 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

The J's orgy of spending continues (and hopefully ends) with Benji Molina signing to 1 yr 5 mil. I'll bet money this was not the contract he was hoping for when the off-season started!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

probably not, but i wonder if the jays removing molina from the market and piazza's pads signing will re-ignite javy trade talks. aren't the angels still in need of catching help?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

I was happy with the Molina deal. The Jays got nothing from the catcher position on the days Zaun didn't play.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

Sheehan on BP pointed to Angel catching as one of the obvious gaping holes that remain, yes. (Along with 2b for the Padres?)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

and (i mention this apropos of almost nothing) christina kahrl name checked archie cianfrocco. j.q. laughed.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

Sheehan on BP pointed to Angel catching as one of the obvious gaping holes that remain, yes. (Along with 2b for the Padres?)

In 2004, our current 2b Mark Bellhorn had 17 hr, 82 rbi, and an .817 ops.

He sucked last year, though. I mean, a lot. Here's his stats last year compared to another guy:

Bellhorn: 300 AB, 20 2b, 8 hr, 30 rbi, .681 ops
Other Guy: 404 AB, 16 2b, 3 hr, 38 rbi, .707 ops

The other guy, of course, is Mark Loretta. Loretta had nice seasons in 2003 and 2004. Prior to that, he had been a completely mediocre-to-poor player for the preceding 7 years (he had one decent year in 1998), and is 34 at makes 3 million.

Bellhorn has had two very good seasons and over eight seasons, is 31, and makes 800k. The Padres second best prospect plays 2b and is probably ready to play for the big team in 2006.

And again, Bellhorn sucks, but is he worse than Eric Bruntlett or Marlon Anderson or Junior Spivey or Chris Burke or Adam Kennedy or Craig Counsell? I don't think so.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

Although those guys can probably actually play defense.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

Plus Craig Counsel has that awesomely shitty batting stance.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

Craig Counsel looks like he smells of peanutty farts.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 23:03 (nineteen years ago)

That's a very odd thing to notice about someone.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 00:04 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know the numbers to be sure, but I would think that Adam Kennedy is at least a half notch better than the rest of that group of second basemen.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 02:42 (nineteen years ago)

His OPSs the last three years were 725, 757, 743. Nothing to write home about.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

But:

1) his defense
2) his batting stance
3) his postseason clutchiocity
4) his Dr. Morbius cuteness quotient

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 05:21 (nineteen years ago)

#4 is worth 10.0 in VORP alone!

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 06:27 (nineteen years ago)

I've also noticed that about Matt Damon. It's true. Matt Damon and Craig Counsel both look like they smell of peanutty farts!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

it's b/c counsell is a notre dame grad.
