CentreSportsCenter had a bit yesterday about how the Yanqui pitching was already in trouble. I didn't bother to watch because, yes, Moose and Unit are older than dirtt.

From a Prospectus live roundtable of last night's stomp in Oakland:

Steven Goldman (7:17:08 PM PST): Bernie Williams hasn't batted yet, but I just want to say... He's KILLING the Yankees!

Steven Goldman (7:17:19 PM PST): ...With his guitar playing!

Steven Goldman (7:32:30 PM PST): If George Steinbrenner had owned the Yankees in 1951, Joe DiMaggio would have played over Mickey Mantle in 1952, 1953, and 1954.

Jay Jaffe (7:40:33 PM PST): if there's one thing I want to see this season, more than a World Series for either the Dodgers or Yanks, it's Larry Bowa creamed by a Sheffield foul ball.

The Daily News, at the bottom of the article, asks, "Why?"

Observers were befuddled that Johnson would file a lawsuit over what amounts to chump change for the millionaire - all while risking unwanted publicity on an intensely private matter.

Because he's a highly competitive athlete. It's not about the money, it's about winning something that Randy feels he should win. That's why he's a great pitcher. It's the same thing that drives players to cheat with drugs and corked bats and spitballs. These athletes have an intense desire to win, so intense that it often clouds their judgement. They put down others do they appears even greater. If you want to win, you want this kind of player on your team. But you need to accept all the baggage that goes with it.

Oh, Pinto...

awww, SS (I hope of Huston Street as well).

That was worth staying up for -- or rather, I slept early and woke up in time to see most of the 2:00-4:30 am replay. (YES skips innings on the rerun -- they probably had some Yankeeography of Luis Sojo to get to -- and they cut it off about 10 seconds after Scutaro's hit, w/o a replay). The YESbots were amazed the A's would bunt the winning run to 2nd with no outs cuz, y'know, they're a Moneyball team.

This thread is less fun with no Dahlem telling us to fuck off.

felicity, be careful with that cell phone, i have a buddy at espn who took me to the company seats first row on camera last year, the yankee staff will threaten to remove you if you so much as hold your phone while the game is in play.

i thought the enforcement was over the top until I noticed asshats on cellphone waving to friends during telecasts of midwest NL games, apparently Steinbrenner hates it too.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

Jim Baker at BP:

In spite of their loss to the Devil Rays Wednesday night, New York's 14 walks in the game remind us that the Yankees are once again asserting themselves as the biggest bunch of bat droppers in the land. In 1931, the Yankees became the first team ever to draw 700 walks in a season. The next year, they became the second, setting the team record in the process. By the end of the decade, they had done it eight times without any other team having done it. In the late '40s, there occurred in the American League a walk explosion the likes of which we have not seen since and the '32 Yankees team walk records fell. The three highest walks-per-game totals ever came in the three-year period of 1948-1950. In those seasons, A.L. batters drew 4.3, 4.6 and 4.4 walks on a per-game basis.

These years are significant to the 2006 Yankees because, after their walkfest on Wednesday night, they have an outside shot at reclaiming the team record set by a club in that period. Putting aside length of season, here are the most team walks ever drawn:

835: 1949 Boston Red Sox
823: 1948 Boston Red Sox
783: 1949 Philadelphia A's
775: 2000 Seattle Mariners
770: 1999 Oakland A's
766: 1932 New York Yankees
765: 1993 Detroit Tigers
762: 1947 Detroit Tigers
751: 1949 Detroit Tigers
751: 1951 Boston Red Sox

With 103 walks in their first 20 games, the Yankees are at a pace to draw 834 in 2006...

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 28 April 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

i remember those '93 tigers. tettleton and fielder and tony phillips and whitaker and fryman, those guys walked a ton.

******asterisk******

154-game season

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 29 April 2006 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

Tony Phillips was a great player to have considering how many positions he could play. Phillips also peaked as a player much later than most, as his best seasons were well into his 30s.

Mickey Tettleton had a real awkward batting stance and swing. They seemed to make a big deal out of how often Tettleton struck out, but I don't think it would be noticed as much today compared to some guys like Dunn, Bellhorn and others.

The old school Tiger that is really underrated is Lance Parrish. That guy was a good all around catcher.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 4 May 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

of course, i'm not privy to what commentary detroit commentators had to say about tettleton, but his striking out shouldn;t have been as big of a deal compared to, say, rob deer. his frist year in d-town he struck out less than fielder or fryman and deer struck out 175 times! tettleton struck out 131, but also walked 101 times. amazing.

maura (maura), Friday, 12 May 2006 03:57 (nineteen years ago)

The replay of that catch looked insanely ugly; Cashman's being quoted as saying that he might miss the whole year. I wonder what the Yankees are going to do in terms of trading for somebody, since I don't think there's even anything defensively intangible about an outfield of Crosby-Damon-Cabrera.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Friday, 12 May 2006 04:16 (nineteen years ago)

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 12 May 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

I like him too, but as the Prospectus annual pointed out, he's a very good player being paid like a great one (he came up with something like 620 runners on base last year, MLB #1), whose value lies in his durability. I'm sure Big Stein is using the whip on Cashew this morning.

It seems the Yanks made a mistake not re-signing Jon Lieber a couple of years ago, who they could have gotten for less money than either Pavano or Wright. Lieber is not great, but has been steady for the Phils.

To be fair to the Yankees and Cashman, I think they were intending on resigning Lieber when they refused his option, but they didn't quite realize how the free agent pitching market post-Benson was going to shake out. At least that's what Cashman has claimed.

from the b'more sun:

"It was Patterson - and not Rodrigo Lopez , who hit Derek Jeter with a sixth-inning pitch that sent him out of the game with a bruised right thumb - who angered the Yankees. Patterson stole second and third with the Orioles leading by six runs in the seventh inning. Bowa yelled at Patterson from the dugout, telling him to "play the game right."

"That was terrible," Bowa said later. Yankees manager Joe Torre didn't take as strong a stance, saying, "It's up to the manager to decide when enough runs is enough."

After the Yankees had scored four runs in the top of the inning, Patterson said he had gotten the go-ahead from the Orioles' dugout to steal if he got on base.

"I am not a dirty player. I am not a cheap player. ... I thought [we] needed at least an extra run," said Patterson, who has a major league-leading 25 stolen bases and scored on Fahey's single.

Mora discussed the matter with Bowa in the top of the eighth and said he told him, "'Hello, you know what uniform you got on? It's not Philadelphia Phillies. You got Yankees. You got the team with the most runs scored in baseball.'"

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the Mariners "improved" after ARod left. Improvement equals haven't a flukey great season and then not making the playoffs again. With ARod, they won the division once and won the wild card once, but who's counting.

The Rangers "improved" after ARod left. They "improved" by finishing in third place in consecutive years, which admittedly is better than fourth. Perhaps it has something to do with their improved pitching?

Meanwhile, The Yankees have regressed by winning the division in consecutive years, and coming within moments of sweeping the Red Sox out of the playoffs and winning a title.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Derek Jeter cologne is on the way.

Avon Products Inc. has signed the New York Yankees shortstop to a deal in which it will create a men's fragrance called Driven -- "reflecting the unique personality of one of the most driven men in America," according to a news release from the company.

The fragrance, the first in a line of men's grooming products bearing Jeter's name, goes on sale in November.

"I have been very involved with creating this fragrance -- everything from the blend of scents to the design of the bottle and logo," Jeter said in the news release. "I did have some help, however. Because women buy a large percentage of the men's grooming products sold in the U.S., I asked my mother Dot and sister Sharlee to be part of the project.

"I wanted to make sure the final product was something men would like to wear -- and that women would want them to wear."

The fragrance is a blend of chilled grapefruit, clean oak moss and spice.

Just as the Yankees were figuring out where Carl Pavano would fit in their rotation, he broke down again. It's becoming clear that Pavano simply cannot stay healthy under a normal workload. Pavano injured his oblique during his last rehab start, putting his future in question. He's the ultimate sunk cost at this stage, expensive enough that it's hard to cut him. Pavano has now put himself into the discussion of "worst free-agent signing ever."

The Yankees are also watching Jason Giambi more closely. He's having trouble with dehydration, and that's leading to cramping and weakness, though he looks good at the start of games. There's no known cause, though there are legal supplements like creatine that have this type of symptomology. Expect Giambi to miss a couple games next week as they try to get him back to 100%.

NEW YORK -- Yankees pitcher Carl Pavano has a pair of broken ribs, the result of a car accident several weeks ago that he initially didn't tell the team about.

Pavano, who hasn't pitched in the major leagues since June 2005 due to shoulder, back, buttocks and elbow injuries, is still scheduled to make a rehabilitation start Wednesday at Triple-A Columbus.

New York general manager Brian Cashman said Monday that Pavano has made three rehab starts with the rib injury. He disclosed it to the team Saturday after feeling discomfort in his most recent minor league outing.

"Of course I'm angry," Cashman said, adding that "it's extremely frustrating" and "it's extremely disappointing."

Cashman still hopes Pavano would be able to pitch in the major leagues this season. Pavano is to have another medical checkup Tuesday.

"We have had players play with this issue before," he said.

Pavano signed a $39.95 million, four-year contract as a free agent before the 2005 season. He was 4-6 with a 4.77 ERA in 17 starts for New York last year.

JN (GA): It's become a stathead meme that Jeter's improved defensive numbers are a result of having A-Rod at third base. How exactly does that work? How is it different from blaming his past stats on A-Rod's predecessors?

Steven Goldman: I don't necessarily buy any of the discussion, from Jeter's improvement to A-Rod's role in it... The Fielding Bible had Jeter sucking as much as ever last year and I tend to buy into their arguments.

The argument about Jeter, from my point of view, is that his positioning could have corrected many of his problems. He lacks a great first step but there's nothing wrong with his arm. He could have done what Cal Ripken did, back up a bit knowing that his arm could make up for the lost time on grounders. If having A-Rod around gave him the confidence to alter his positioning a little bit then in that sense having A-Rod helped. That doesn't make A-Rod responsible for the improvement necessarily.

I don't remember Ali fishing for sympathy (well maybe a little when they took away his title.)

a-rod reminds me more and more of this guy:

HAHA

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

A-Rod's prettiness is one reason some people hate him though. He's not manly enough, so you get things like the (still-hilarious) purse slap.

WE WILL NOW SEE SHEFFIELD PLAYIN 1B!?!?!?!

Jimmy Mod's Champion Erotic Fantasy Team 2006 (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

My first thought was "Mussina is just as good-looking, punk."

So who is better equipped to knock off the Empire in the LDS, Minn or Det? I'm thinking Twins.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 21 September 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

Assuming Gardy doesn't have any brainfarts like he did the last time the Twinkies faced off w/ the Yanqs, then yeah, Twins.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 21 September 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

Let's see, Minnesota has a better offense, the best pitcher in baseball, one of the top two or three closers in the league (provided Gardy doesn't try to get three inning saves out of him or whatever it was that led to the Game 2 meltdown in 2004), doesn't have Sean Casey and Neifi Perez in its lineup, and is by far the hotter team right now.

I'm thinking Twins as well.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 21 September 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

I would much rather the A's face the Tigers than the Twins in a short series so GO TIGERS!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 21 September 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

of course, Alex, if the A's pass the Yanks for best record (only 3-1/2 behind -- what was the season series result?), you'd still get the Twins if they are the WC.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 21 September 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

A's won the season series with the Yanks. 3 1/2 games is a lot though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 21 September 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

Go Red Sox...?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 21 September 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

2007's been a career year for A-Rod
Career high in GIDP
Career high in Ks
Career high in Errors
Career low in Batting Average

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 21 September 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

You are Mike Lupica, and I will hit you with a 2x4.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 21 September 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

btw, aren't clinching celebrations where you do it AFTER A LOSS supposed to be "subdued"? Not the Yankee Way, I guess!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 21 September 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, according to this damning post-Verducci/A-Purse article, that IS the Yankee Way.

Shaun (shaun), Saturday, 23 September 2006 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

Someone give the Yankee slaphead a JETER SUCKS tee.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 23 September 2006 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

Randy Johnson: "I can win 17 games anywhere." With a 5.00 ERA? Wotta schmuck.

nate p. (natepatrin), Sunday, 1 October 2006 02:45 (nineteen years ago)

It's kind of interesting how Mets Thread 2006 is the new Yankees Thread 2005.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 1 October 2006 06:33 (nineteen years ago)

Morbius is the new Dahlem

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 1 October 2006 08:29 (nineteen years ago)

Jeter came out in the ninth inning of a tie game, presumably because he was 1-5 and Mauer already had two hits, leaving him with virtually no shot at the batting title.

NOT CLUTCH

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 1 October 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)
