i bet there's something wrong with putz. i love the guy, but he wasn't right last year. i sort of think the mariners knew something and that's why they wanted to move him before the start of the season. i bet they figured that his value wasn't going to go up as he played games.

i was thinking that too.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 15 December 2008 18:33 (seventeen years ago)

i bet they figured that his value wasn't going to go up as he played games.

I was thinking that their new GM probably understands that it makes no sense to have an all-star closer on a rebuilding team, so might as well trade him and replenish the farm, especially in the wake of the Bedard trade.

btw, Mets are not offering any ticket packs of less than 15 games to former buyers like myself this year. Not biting for that many; I will probably see fewer Mets games this year than I have since the George Bamberger Era.

Mets Will Give García Chance to Join Rotation
By TYLER KEPNER
The last two years have been sobering for Freddy García, whose shoulder has kept him from being the premier starter he was for eight seasons. He has bounced to the Philadelphia Phillies and the Detroit Tigers, and now he will try with the Mets.

The Mets agreed to a minor league contract with García, according to a person with knowledge of the deal who was granted anonymity because the move had not been announced. García will have a chance to compete for a spot in the rotation.

García, 33, will go to spring training with more career victories than the Mets’ ace, Johan Santana, but also with significant physical questions. In 14 starts over the last two seasons, he is 2-6 with a 5.55 earned run average.

García was among the top starters in the American League from 1999 through 2006. In that eight-year span, he ranked first in the A.L. in innings pitched, with 1,643 2/3, and second to Mike Mussina in victories, with 116.

García also starred in the postseason, with a 6-2 record and 3.16 E.R.A., including two victories for Seattle in the 2000 A.L. Championship Series. He also won the decisive game of the 2005 World Series for the Chicago White Sox.

But García has not been the same since the White Sox traded him to the Phillies for Gavin Floyd before the 2007 season. García made 11 starts before labrum surgery that August. He was out of the majors for more than a year and made three starts for Detroit last September.

García was 1-1 with a 4.20 E.R.A. for the Tigers, going five innings in each of his starts, and, in November, he was shut down with shoulder soreness while pitching in Venezuela. That problem was said to be muscular, not structural, and the Mets, the Yankees and others were interested in signing him.

The Mets remain hopeful of signing a prominent free agent.

The Mets’ top choice is to retain Oliver Pérez, 27, who could command a four-year deal. Their fallback options include Randy Wolf or Ben Sheets, whose injury history has made teams wary.

Jeff Wilpon, the Mets’ chief operating officer, told Bloomberg News on Thursday that General Manager Omar Minaya had payroll flexibility to add another starter. Wilpon also said Minaya had not approached him about Manny Ramírez, the premier position player still available in free agency.

“I know the perception out there again is that ownership said no,” Wilpon said. “I don’t have the opportunity to say no because Omar hasn’t brought it to me as an option. Omar and the baseball staff aren’t interested.”

Will Manny and Perez sign with anyone before spring training?

The Mets are trying to trade reserve catcher Ramon Castro; they feel Robinson Cancel would be a more cost-effective backup for Brian Schneider.

JtM Is Ruled By A Black Man (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 13 February 2009 03:16 (seventeen years ago)

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/baseball/mlb/02/14/mets.reyes.leadoff.ap/

New York Mets manager Jerry Manuel is pondering the idea of dropping his speedy shortstop from the leadoff spot, one of several tweaks that could be on tap for a team coming off consecutive September collapses.

Luis Castillo might get a shot at the top of the lineup, perhaps with Carlos Beltran batting second and Reyes No. 3. Reyes could also be handed more leadership responsibilities on defense, such as aligning other infielders and visiting the mound.

Andy K, Sunday, 15 February 2009 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

"This is not about statistical success. This is about winning as a team, and you have to put people in positions that you feel is best to win as a team," Manuel said during a 40-minute news conference.

(*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 15 February 2009 16:33 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, i'm on record in thinking Manuel might be an idiot. and SS, I really really wish you would beat up equally on some other big-payroll teams this year.

as for Livan, he's Plan G, or N.

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

also Castillo has about as much chance lasting as Mets' leadoff hitter as i do.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 02:15 (seventeen years ago)

JtM Is Ruled By A Black Man (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

No player on the New York Mets was booed more than Shea Stadium fans than second baseman Luis Castillo last year. This season, Castillo has every intention of making amends for his worst season as a big leaguer.

Castillo and his agents visited Omar Minaya's office after last season, to express remorse for the second baseman's subpar performance in the first season of a four-year, $25 million deal. And to request not to be traded.

Castillo then went to work in the Dominican Republic this winter, traveling 70 minutes each way to the Mets' academy for 4½-hour workouts with former major-leaguer Rafael Landestoy. The result: a slimmer Castillo reported to camp weighing in at 193 pounds, down from the 210 of last spring training.

glad you asked Dr. Morbseuss:

see he gave up 6 runs but at least World Series MVP Hamels had the decency to spread them out over 5 innings. Also, he struck out some dudes and didn't walk in a bunch of runs... so there's that.

really weird play

beltran tagged from second to third on a fly ball to right, ankiel threw it to third and when thurston went to swipe the tag the ball flew out of his glove as he did it and it rolled out to the pitcher's mound. motte was behind third so thurston had to run up to get it because beltran was running home and he threw beltran out at home because beltran didn't slide

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 30 April 2009 00:14 (sixteen years ago)

yeah idk, i mean i guess santos is faster than castro but fast enough to get an infield hit? plus castro had 2 or 3 hits already? also a rookie in a pressure situation. all told i'm sure they had a relatively equal chance of getting a hit, but it was weird that it seemed like manuel was completely unprepared for the possibility of castro coming up w/ bases loaded

GOON carter cash (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 April 2009 00:17 (sixteen years ago)

no, I don't watch every game. I do take the Fangraphs take on JJ seriously.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 30 April 2009 00:43 (sixteen years ago)

putz will be fine - today he threw a ball on 3-2 to cantu and one to hermida on 3-2 after he had fouled off a few pitches and then ross knew he was getting a fastball and he got one that was up around the letters. was kind of a flukey inning and if he had thrown a few more strikes it would've been alright.

green was grooving pitches otoh

GOON carter cash (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 April 2009 00:46 (sixteen years ago)

santos might be a rookie in a pressure sitch, but he has some cause for confidence, no? supposedly his hitting got noticed in spring training, while castro was sub-200 before today. has green looked good in any game thus far?

if you're gonna go to a game with gabbneb, you better be prepared to see a Tatis homer and a tight loss spend most of your time eating. i like el verano's tomatillo-chipotle, carnitas and mole, and catch of the day's ginger limeade (though i'm guessing that the blue moon on offer - or a hoegaarden, eg, from the meyerland beer island - might pair better with the lobster roll, and imagine el verano's brooklyn 'sabrosa' is nice (but no brooklyn pilsner in the ballpark? boo)). of course i also like carvel chocolate with rainbow sprinkles, so ymmv XD. place is awesome, at least when it's below capacity.

“I think Santos has a little shorter swing,” Manuel said later, explaining why he pinch-hit one right-handed hitter for another, catcher Ramon Castro, who had gone 2 for 4. “And when you have a little shorter swing, it’s easier to get to a guy that’s throwing in the upper 90s. If it had been, let’s say, a sinker-slider guy, then Ramon would have continued to hit.”

AL East is far and away the best league in MLB.

Tried to figure out the best way to display this quickly and dirtily, took the average rank by division of the BP Power Rankings (3rd order W/L, Adjusted EQR/EQRA, etc.):

AL East = 10.0
NL East = 15.8
AL Central = 16.7
NL Central = 17.4
AL West = 18.0
NL West = 18.8

NL East is the 2nd best league in MLB, but the distance from #2 to #6 is much closer than #1 to #2.

Newsday via CSTB:

A resident of Liberty became ill last Wednesday, three days after attending a Mets game at Citi Field on Mother’s Day, said Sullivan County manager David Fanslau. The unidentified victim became the county’s first confirmed victim of the H1N1 virus Monday afternoon, he said.

Because the woman’s trip to the game was her only known foray out of Sullivan County lately, Fanslau said, local officials officials suspect there may be a link.

Another woman from the county has a probable case of swine flu, Fanslau said. She showed flu-like symptoms over the weekend, Fanslau said. Sullivan officials believe she contracted the illness from the first woman, he said.

“Obviously, we don’t know for a fact, but it’s the first case we have in Sullivan County and we talked to her and the only travel she made was to New York City for the Mets game,” Fanslau said.

BOSTON -- New York Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez was back with the club on Sunday and feeling better after being hospitalized for back spasms following Saturday night's game.

Mets manager Jerry Manuel was unsure when Rodriguez would be available, but expects shortstop Jose Reyes to play Monday at home against the Nationals. Reyes has been sidelined with tendinitis in his right calf.

Manuel said after Saturday night's game that Rodriguez couldn't walk following batting practice. The right-hander said "his legs locked up," prompting medical personnel to take him to an ambulance on a stretcher.

"That was scary," Rodriguez said on Sunday, talking to the media with his back wrapped while the Mets took batting practice before their game against the Red Sox. "I've never felt anything like that.

"They gave me some medicine and it feels better."

The New York Mets have traded backup catcher Ramon Castro(notes) and cash to the Chicago White Sox for right-hander Lance Broadway(notes).

Castro hit .253 with three homers and 13 RBIs in 26 games this season with New York. Castro was made expendable by the play of rookie Omir Santos(notes), who drove in both runs in the Mets’ 2-1 victory over the Florida Marlins in 11 innings on Friday night.

Broadway is 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA in eight games with the White Sox this season. Mets general manager Omar Minaya says he will be assigned to Triple-A Buffalo and work as a starter.

Mets facing swine flu scare
An SNY employee who travels with the Mets has been stricken by an unidentified strain of the flu, prompting concerns about swine flu in a clubhouse that has had two players come down with a stomach virus in the past several days. The Mets would not identify the person, but a source close to the situation said it is a member of the network's technical staff. The employee has been isolated from the team since coming down with the flu Monday, and -- as with everyone who has the flu these days -- is being tested for swine flu. However, it could take up to a week before test results reveal whether it is swine flu. In the meantime, the Mets are taking every precaution possible.

Putz admits to feeling sharp pain in his right elbow. Worse:

Reyes Tears Tendon in Right Hamstring
By Ben Shpigel, NY Times

PITTSBURGH — An M.R.I. exam in New York revealed a “small” tear in Jose Reyes’s right hamstring tendon — a new injury, not a re-aggravation of the calf problems that have kept him out of the lineup for most of the last three weeks. He is scheduled to rest for two days before resuming treatment, but then what?

Will he be out for another week? Two more weeks? A month? More? The Mets did not offer a timetable, but two to three weeks is a conservative estimate. Even though this tear is new, apparently sustained Wednesday morning during his second at-bat in an extended spring training game, the problem is old.

http://deadspin.com/5288255/mets-fans-are-a-bunch-of-decrepit-old-dudes-poll-finds

Over all, the Yankees have more fans than the Mets citywide by a 9-point margin, with 34 percent of New Yorkers in the city supporting the Yankees, 25 percent favoring the Mets, 34 percent saying they do not have an allegiance to either team, and 6 percent considering themselves fans of both teams.

Demographically, the poll found some differences between Mets and Yankees fans. Women are more likely than men to say they do not support either New York team, but over all, women who are fans are significantly less likely than men to back the Mets.

City baseball fans under the age of 45 favor the Yankees over the Mets by a 2 to 1 margin, but those 45 years of age and older are evenly divided in their support.

Francisco Rodriguez ripped by Yankees reliever

That didn't take long. Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez has been in New York for little more than two months, and already he has been ripped for the theatrics that accompany his saves, theatrics more than familiar to Angels fans.

Rodriguez blew his first save of the season on Friday, but only because Mets second baseman Luis Castillo dropped a pop fly. Rodriguez got no sympathy from a fellow reliever, Brian Bruney of the New York Yankees. Here's what Bruney said to the Hunterdon County (N.J) Democrat today , while on a rehabilitation assignment at double-A Trenton:

"Couldn't have happened to a better guy on the mound, either. He's got a tired act. I think that's bad, but two years ago, when he lost the game ... He was in Oakland and he was pitching for Anaheim, didn't get a call, and so he was, like, complaining. The catcher threw it back and ... (it) hit off his glove and bounced behind and the guy from third scored and they won the game.

"He gets what he deserves, man. I just don't like watching the guy pitch. I think it's embarrassing."

The game to which Bruney referred, since known to Oakland fans as the Rodriguez "sulk-off," took place on Aug. 11, 2005.

Rodriguez had this response to Bruney, according to the Westchester (N.Y.) Journal News: "I don't even know who that guy is."

sanskrit, Sunday, 14 June 2009 17:52 (sixteen years ago)

He actually said quite a bit more:

"Instead of sending a message in the paper, next time when he sees me at Citi Field, come up to me and say it. Don't be sending a message to the media. I don't even know who that guy is, somewhere in Double-A and not even pitching one full season.

"He's always been on the DL, that's all I really know right now. He'd better keep his mouth shut and do his job, and not worry about somebody else. If it was somebody big, I might pay attention to it. But somebody like that? It doesn't bother me.

"If somebody comes out with that, somebody big like Mariano [Rivera], somebody who has been around and is good at what he does, I would respect that. But for some guy that I don't even know who it is, that hasn't even played a full year in the big leagues, that's always been hurt? It doesn't bother me."

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 14 June 2009 18:07 (sixteen years ago)

NEW YORK -- The Subway Series is getting awfully testy.

Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez shouted at Yankees reliever Brian Bruney during batting practice Sunday and the two were separated by teammates. That came one day after they exchanged barbs through the media.

In video footage on YES Network, an angry Rodriguez could be seen pointing at Bruney from a few feet away before Yankees reliever Jose Veras stepped between them in left field.

Bruney held his ground and appeared to say little, if anything. Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey got in front of Rodriguez and escorted him away.

Bruney criticized Rodriguez on Saturday, calling the closer's exuberant celebrations on the mound a "tired act." Rodriguez said Bruney "better keep his mouth shut."

Dr Morbius, Saturday, 20 June 2009 20:07 (sixteen years ago)

Ken Belson, NYT:

Perhaps it’s the opposition, perhaps it’s the economy, perhaps it’s the Mets mediocre record. Whatever the reason, the Mets are discounting tickets to their upcoming home games.

Select tickets for the three games against the Tampa Bay Rays are going for half off, while tickets for the four-game set against the St. Louis Cardinals, who will play at Citi Field starting Monday, are being discounted by one-third.

Baseline box seats that cost $90 this weekend can be had for $45. Metropolitan box seats that have a $180 price tag can be bought for $90. Tickets are cheaper for the games against the Cardinals because they are “bronze” games instead of the “gold” games being played this weekend.

hey morbs

ive heard two diff visiting announcing teams talk about how the atmosphere at citi is drastically worse than at old shea and i was wondering if it's true or not? are the "real" fans being priced out or is the thing just too cavernous or what?

whiney g. gordon liddy (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 04:35 (sixteen years ago)

meh, I dunno. My last 2 visits were in the first row of the upper deck near home, and the main problem was people going up and down the stairs near my sightline during the game. Plus the Wave. Same shit everywhere, right?

I don't know how it's "cavernous." The seats are closer to the field and there's more room on the concourses.

glad that "Meet the Mets" is the new 8th-inning singalong, but just since Monday they dropped the bridge:

Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the streets,
Where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
Oh, they're hollerin' and cheerin' and they're jumpin' in their seats,
Where did they go? To MEET THE METS!

call all destroyer, Monday, 29 June 2009 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

well the song is from '62, they used to play it when there was a live stadium organist the first 20 years of the franchise... Then it vanished, and there was ac rappy '80s synth-driven version that changed the lyrics. Now they've resurrected the original the last couple years (since the redo mentioned "Shea").

Bernazard, already notorious for his alleged influence in the firing of Willie Randolph and Rick Peterson a year ago, apparently was so incensed on a trip to observe the Mets' Double-A Binghamton team that he ripped off his shirt in the clubhouse after a game and challenged the players to a fight.

Mets New York Mets All-Star closer Frankie Rodriguez confirmed this afternoon that he exchanged words on the team bus last week in Atlanta with Bernazard, the club's embattled vice president of player development.

"Yeah [it happened], but I'm not going to talk about that," Rodriguez told The Post before tonight's game here with the Nationals. "Not going to get into it."

Another player, who asked to remain anonymous, told The Post today: "That guy [Bernazard] is crazy. No one likes him."

the frenchy trade is pretty A+ imo - would any mets fan even have cared if they had just str8 up released church? - pretty low risk - i mean i guess the downside is that you're forced to actually play francouer but he's certainly no worse than frankie martinez

max, Friday, 24 July 2009 17:27 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, losing church is whatevs but making a move in the midst of a complete team meltdown that consists of taking the #1 stiff off the hands of division rival is the kind of tonedeaf bs minaya has been pulling the last couple of years. i avoided the fire minaya cry up until recently, and i still don't think they should fire manuel tho he is kinda clueless, but when things go this badly after 2 epic chokes, something's gotta give. it's pretty clear to me at this point that minaya has absolutely no idea about how to run a baseball team. on the plus side, we won't have to endure a sept. choke, so maybe omar did us a favor

velko, Friday, 24 July 2009 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

yeah the francoeur trade was absolutely terrible without question, since the dude will not help in any way and in fact this helps ATL. if minaya was smart he could have traded church for a more useful utility player maybe.

Howard Johnson has experienced the high of winning a World Series with the '86 Mets. As for lows, the Mets' current plight tops the hitting coach's list.

As the Mets try to regroup Friday night against the Astros after an off-day, HoJo has watched his hitters get shut out five times this month and nine times this season. In July, the Mets have scored an MLB-low 49 runs and also rank last in homers with four. The longball total through Wednesday was a full seven behind the teams ranked second-to-last: Kansas City, San Diego and Washington.

Nationals rookie Craig Stammen - yes, Craig Stammen - limited the Mets to one run and four hits in 7 1/3 innings in their 3-1 rubber-game loss Wednesday in Washington. One Met called Stammen among the least-impressive pitchers he had seen this season.

"I'm trying to stay positive every day," Johnson said. "Guys come and get their work in. We try to prepare them as best we can. I know the guys are out there giving their best effort. We're just not good enough."

The news conference took a strange twist when Minaya said he “scuffled” with the first published reports, by Adam Rubin, the beat writer for The Daily News, because, he said, Rubin had lobbied him and others in the Mets organization for a job in player development.

Rubin said later that he was flabbergasted by the remark, saying he thought Minaya was accusing him of “taking down” Bernazard because he wanted his job. “I asked, How do you go about getting a job in baseball? That’s the extent of it,” Rubin said in a televised interview after the news conference.

“I don’t know how I can cover the team now,” he added.

After the news conference, Minaya discussed what had transpired with chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon. The pair visited the Citi Field press box about two hours later, before the start of the Mets’ game against the Colorado Rockies.

Minaya said he stood by his comments about Rubin but acknowledged that it “was not the proper forum to raise those issues.” Asked if he would reach out to Rubin, who left the ballpark shortly after the news conference, Minaya said, “Possibly.”

Wilpon said Rubin had also consulted him about career advice.

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that,” Wilpon said. “I believe Adam was just doing what anybody else does. I probably get a call a week from someone asking for career advice.”

like my mets fans friends loved this trade not because of francoeur's "potential" (which is still fucked, if he never learns to walk idc if he hits 40 HR) but because they legitimately think he's a good player. i get the feeling this is the perception most ppl have of him

Mr. Sb, n r u? (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 02:38 (sixteen years ago)

most mets fans follow what happens with the braves and know francoeur has stunk up the league the last 2-3 years. but they would love for him to turn it around, so far he's been more than decent but small sample size etc

velko, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 02:41 (sixteen years ago)

i mean i don't have to "root against" frenchy cause even if he has a good run or a hot streak or something, i know that he is a bad baseball player and will ultimately fail. i also got pretty tired of lol ignorant baseball fans a couple years ago--life's too short to turn into joe sheehan.

from Faith & Fear in Flushing:

Was I so drowsy that I think the Mets were robbed of a 2-1 win by a lazy umpire who couldn't be bothered to open his eyes or move his feet? Not exactly. Putting aside the Mets' standard-issue pacifistic hitting attack after the first (with no hits after the fifth), K-Rod's definitely going through another Bramando Fragner phase wherein the Mets closer of record can't be counted on to shut the door of a dollhouse. He did walk Blanks and did he allow a very long hit to Will Venable as prelude to Marvin's misjudgment — but instead of it being 2-2, runner on third, nobody out, it should have been 2-1, runner on third, one out. Big honking difference, I'd say. Without Hudson's river of carelessness, we're not semi-intentionally walking one batter and then handing out four purposeful balls to the next guy. We're not loading the bases and playing five infielders and two short-centerfielders and that whole desperation thing that generally never works.

Guess what — it didn't work. Everth Cabrera, whom Gary and Ron were talking about Thursday as one of those Padres who couldn't possibly be ready for the majors, lofted a grand slam to right as you or I might toss a crumpled up piece of paper into a wastebasket. Game over, a good nap spoiled, Marvin Hudson a disgrace, Ollie's unexpected effectiveness nothing but a gauzy memory and K-Rod's S-Lump yet one more Met concern to throw on the teeming pile of them.

Everth Cabrera, whom Gary and Ron were talking about Thursday as one of those Padres who couldn't possibly be ready for the majors

Fifth-place San Diego can't afford to have Cabrera end up like Jose Reyes (with fewer hits, better plate discipline).

Reyes (first 54 games): .304/.321/.416, 11 SB/2 CS
Cabrera (first 54 games): .263/.341/.414, 15 SB/2 CS

Team is cursed.

NEW YORK -- David Wright has left the New York Mets game against San Francisco after being hit squarely in the helmet by a 94 mph fastball from Giants starter Matt Cain.

Cain's 0-2 pitch with none out in the fourth inning of a scoreless game Saturday hit Wright just above the brim of the helmet, sending it flying as Wright fell to the ground in the right-handed batter's box.

Wright lay motionless on his stomach for over a minute before trainers helped turn him over onto his back. One trainer leaned in close as Wright was on his stomach, talking to the third baseman. After Wright was turned over, he sat up and a trainer shone a light in his eyes.

Wright was helped to his feet and walked off the field with limited help. Fans gave him a loud ovation.

Cain, who had thrown just seven balls in the first three innings, walked halfway in toward the plate and sat in a crouch as trainers attended to Wright. Bochy visited the mound at the end of the 3-minute delay.

Fernando Tatis ran for the All-Star starter and stayed in the game at third.

When asked if Wright could miss the rest of the season, New York manager Jerry Manuel said it's "a possibility" depending on how further tests come out. The club had not decided whether to put him on the disabled list before Sunday's game against the Giants.

Time for fun w/ Sheffield

Andy K, Thursday, 20 August 2009 23:22 (sixteen years ago)

Gary Sheffield has asked the Mets for a contract extension, and the club was unwilling to meet the request.

In other news, outfielder Gary Sheffield was listed on the lineup posted about four hours before the first pitch Thursday night. His name was replaced by youngster Cory Sullivan about 30 minutes later.

"He asked for a day off to kind of clear some thoughts and things," Manuel said. "I think it would do him good both physically and mentally to get a day."

"Just for the best today," Sheffield said when asked why he wasn't starting. "It's just the best thing to allow somebody else to play. I'm 100 percent healthy."

Upon returning to the clubhouse after batting practice, Sheffield joked, "I'm still here."

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=lukas/090831&sportCat=mlb

Valuable content:

"• The S100 has a raised ridge in the back that seems to lend itself to a two-tone color design. So will we see more teams dabbling with color combinations, like the Rangers' failed experiment from last winter? "Our primary focus is on making the helmet available to players in the original design," says Bourne, the MLB spokesman. "If the club wants to ask for a change, they can." Translation: The Mets will do something embarrassing, like they always do, but most of the other teams will play it straight."

A Patch on Blazing Saddles (Dr Morbius), Friday, 4 September 2009 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

Two weeks ago, Jerry Koosman was cheered in Queens with other legendary members of the 1969 "Miracle Mets" lineup.

Thursday, he went to prison.

Forty years after he helped boost a laughingstock team to World Series glory, the retired pitcher was slapped with a six-month sentence for failing to pay taxes. Koosman, 66, a two-time All-Star lefty, apologized as he was read his fate, saying he got suckered by the anti-tax fringe movement.

"Like most people in their sixties, I've made some bad decisions in my life," he said.

"I tend to trust people more than I should," he said.

"I shouldn't have listened to those people about the tax returns, but I did, and I take full responsibility."

Koosman failed to file federal tax returns between 2002 and 2004, defrauding the government out of as much as $80,000.

The IRS testified he made $754,950 over those years, including $130,000 from his Major League Baseball pension.

In 2002, he made $25,000 from autographs and personal appearances and sold $551,881 worth of stock.

Koosman pleaded guilty to tax evasion in May, saying his research led him to conclude that only federal workers and District of Columbia residents had to pay federal taxes.

IRS agents who confronted him in 2006 said he showed them three binders of documents challenging the government's right to levy taxes.

Koosman's lawyer, Robert Bernhoft, described the former pitcher as an honest, reliable - but naive - farm boy.

"He has a reputation for being too trusting and naive," Bernhoft said, arguing for probation.

U.S. District Court Judge Barbara Crabb called his crime "a serious blemish on an otherwise outstanding life."

She could have sentenced him to a full year in prison but cut the penalty in half, adding a year of supervised release.

She said he would have to work out his debts with the IRS.

Prosecutors say he still owes the government about $65,000.

Koosman, who lives in Wisconsin, played 19 seasons in the majors, including his first 12 with the Mets.

Along with pitchers Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan, he made the Mets Amazin' - and even landed on the cover of Life magazine in 1969.

He had 222 wins and 209 losses and a 3.36 earned run average during his career, which spanned from 1967 to 1985.

Koosman is also known for giving up Pete Rose's landmark 4,000th career hit in 1984, and retiring the following year.

Sometime in the 1990s, he sold the series-winning ball caught for the final out of Game5 of the 1969 World Series.

He said he can't remember who bought it, or how much they paid.

The Mets believe Francoeur will look sharp in their 2010 uni, so much so that they are inclined to approach him about signing him to a three-year contract that would allow him to become a big league Beau Brummel, if he so chose. They like what they have seen of him in and out of uniform — from his spirited demeanor to his nuclear arm to the two doubles he produced Saturday afternoon in their victory against the Nationals.

Jerry Manuel said something I’ve been saying since the day he first became a Met. He talked about Francoeur’s intangibles – you know, those things that don’t show up in the box scores.

Ken Belson, NYT:

Lawyers for Sterling Equities, the investment firm controlled by Fred Wilpon, the principal owner of the Mets, said it lost money as a result of the Ponzi scheme orchestrated by Bernard L. Madoff, according to a filing Thursday in the United States Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan.

The trustee recouping money on behalf of victims of the fraud has disqualified claims from investors who took out more money than they put into accounts with Madoff’s firm, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities. Sterling Equities was among those disqualified on those grounds.

But Sterling Equities’ lawyers argued that losses should be based on how much money was in its account on Nov. 30, 2008, and that the trustee, Irving H. Picard, has no right to recover money from investors who took money out of their account before the Ponzi scheme collapsed.

The filing on Thursday echoed the complaints of other investors who withdrew their original capital from accounts with Madoff as opposed to those who touched little of their money and lost everything.

A hearing on the matter was scheduled for Feb. 2.

Fernando Martinez, the Mets' highly regarded but oft-injured outfield prospect, returned from summer knee surgery two weeks ago in the Dominican Winter League - only to have another problem.

Martinez, who was hitting .167 with two RBI in six games with Escogido, has been sidelined since last Saturday with blisters. Martinez believes the trouble surfaced during an aggressive batting practice session. He officially is day-to-day, but the blisters reportedly haven't substantially improved.

The continued trouble has led to advice from ex-Met Moises Alou, who is GM of Martinez's winter-ball team. Alou, who used to urinate on his hands to increase the skin's toughness, has recommended Martinez do the same thing.
