Hi guiz. Are we doing a league or not y/n.
― Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 7 February 2009 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

I think I will claim Koyaanis Kotsay as team name after all.

― JtM Is Ruled By A Black Man (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 7 February 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)
who wants to commish this after last year's KRAZINESSSS?
― Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:01 (sixteen years ago)
y - i'm down for commissn'n again.
don't expect much until i get back from Spain in early march tho.i liked the stats we used last year (except for the cycle and no-hitters) (maybe replace them with hbp or something for our lolstat)!
hmm xpost - remind me what craziness we had last year?!
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:04 (sixteen years ago)
wow - i had sort of blocked out how brutal my draft was last year... Ortiz, Pedro, Posada - Rafael Soriano! ugh!
maybe if a few people have different ideas for stats we can do a poll?
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:17 (sixteen years ago)
i wasnt in the league last year but wasnt there like huge controversies about something, okay maybe not who cares
― Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:23 (sixteen years ago)
maybe you're thinking two years ago when shasta backed out of running the thing the day of the draft?!
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:32 (sixteen years ago)
i'm totally in again.
― j.q higgins, Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, "say it ain't so, Shasta" was two years ago. Last year had to be the most drama-free season we've ever had! The low level of trade talk had a lot to do with that, though.
Count me in.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 7 February 2009 18:30 (sixteen years ago)
I would love a "positive drug test" LOLstat, which would include names from the super secret 2003 list, as long as the entire list doesn't leak before draft day.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 7 February 2009 18:31 (sixteen years ago)
I didn't back out of running the thing... I deleted my team from the league but I guess if you do that before assigning a co-commisioner it deletes the league. i'm not travelling nearly as much these days so I am up for a ILBB fantasy team... if you guys let me... u_u

i'm in again!
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 8 February 2009 18:47 (sixteen years ago)
shutouts, C/D?
I like having lots of stat categories, but I def. agree about CYC and NH.
― WmC, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago)
Shutouts are better than cycles and no-hitters, but they're a pretty empty category.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)
what date is yahoo! opening up the leagues to registration?
seems a little tardy this year...
― (*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 18:50 (sixteen years ago)
ya, i can't find much about it aside from a vague mention that maybe it should be sometime this week?
no rush tho - since i'm not gonna be setting anything up until i'm back from Spain the first week of March. maybe set the draft up for the last weekend of March. 28 or 29th i think.
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:11 (sixteen years ago)
Yahoo registration is open now, but what does peoples thinks about ESPN's advantage of free live scoring and fantasycast? I'd like to save that ten bucks.
― WmC, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 04:04 (sixteen years ago)
It wasn't a rhetorical question -- opinions plz!
― WmC, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 04:01 (sixteen years ago)
I have had bad experiences with ESPN.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 05:18 (sixteen years ago)
Such as?
― WmC, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 18:24 (sixteen years ago)
For one thing, I think most fantasy players I know tend to use Yahoo for most of their leagues, and an ESPN league requires them to make the extra effort to go to a different website, and that leads to a lot of players dropping out early or not trying as hard or whatever.
We did ESPN for the ILX fantasy football league this season, and I found the system incredibly inflexible and weird, but that not be a problem for baseball.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I was in the fantasy football league -- I don't remember anything weird or inflexible, except maybe not being able to make roster moves during the weekend, but like you say, that's n/a for baseball.
I'm just trying to save a few bucks everywhere I can this year. Economy's going to take a big chunk out of me.
― WmC, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)
Yahoo doesn't cost anything unless you get stat tracker, which I have never bothered to purchase in 10+ years of using the site.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 19:07 (sixteen years ago)
you can just click the little link to the box score and get your live stats there rather than pay $10 for them to appear on the same page as your roster
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 19:18 (sixteen years ago)
the free stats are nice. and stat tracker is my lifeblood during night classes! but yahoo does have familiarity plus lol trophy case and can keep track of carryover leagues. I would still vote yahoo b/c thats where are all my other fantasy action is.
― bnw, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 22:37 (sixteen years ago)

ok. i killed triples, hitter strikeouts, cycles and replaced obp and slg with obps. and for pitching took away shutouts, walks, and no-no's. and then, just to make things interesting, added save%, an extra roster spot for one more pitcher and upped the max ip. (from last years stats)

oh. i'll own up so you don't think the fix is in.i was in a mock draft and shared the pwd with h2h drafters who wanted to try roto. commissioner can boot them out as he sees fit.but it would be great if we could get to 20. l murda is def one of them but i don't see r murda. if this is strictly ilxors then we might want to googleproof this thread.
― ✈ ▌▌ (sanskrit), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 13:02 (sixteen years ago)
i'mma have to have a think about it. seems strange. and you don't know this second person, you say?

― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:10 (sixteen years ago)
I don't see the appeal of a big league, myself. That's just more people to get bored with it after the first month passes and most managers realize they can't win.
L Murda is one of the team names, and R Murda is the name of the manager of a different team.
― WmC, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:12 (sixteen years ago)
i could care less about the size as long as there's at least 10. but what i like about our league is we can come here and trash talk, have fits of self-pity, or discuss trades. it's always nicer to deal with people you at least "internet know", you know?!
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:21 (sixteen years ago)
yeah at the very least i think they would need to be recruited to post on ilbb so they can be sonned in future save %age beefs
― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:48 (sixteen years ago)
hahahha! btw - how awesomes is my new team name: "The Vottobots"?!
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:51 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i guess boot them. they were shit talking a lot in the chat window and seemed to know their stuff but have no connection here. could we extend the invite to baseball prospectus people or friends of ilb?
the reason why i'd like it to get to 20 is because it makes every little strategic move count a whole lot more. taking a risk on wieters and seeing him turn into the next longoria makes a huge difference, where in an 8 man league every team is already like a mini all star team.
― ✈ ▌▌ (sanskrit), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:52 (sixteen years ago)
well we're well past 8 already. and i think we still have a few more locals who've yet to sign up (i made a list but it's at home). so i think we'll land somewhere between 12-15. which is fine in my books. (20 can be a little much since the people at the bottom have quite literally no hope of ever even getting close to the top)
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:59 (sixteen years ago)
also: i was thinking next year maybe we might want to start us up a keeper league? usually the same lot of us every year, so why not?! (never done the keeper thing before but would love to be in one)
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 15:04 (sixteen years ago)

― VAG... NI... HITLER (Leee), Thursday, 26 March 2009 16:55 (sixteen years ago)
ade your pitching staff leaves a lot to be desired, imo. Might want to think about trading some of your depth for better starting pitching. I mean, obviously Timmy is great but I don't think he'll win 20 games, and then after that I see innings eaters, rookies, and gambles.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 26 March 2009 16:56 (sixteen years ago)
the stat setup is really weird in this league tho, allow me 2 elucidate:
hitting: R, H, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, CS, BB, IBB, K, TB, Epitching: W, L, SHO, SV, HR, BB, HBP, K, WP, BLK, RL, NH, PG, BSV
all counting stats, and a bunch of them are nonpredictive (relief losses, no hitters, wild pitches, perfect games???) so i basically just concentrated on guys who will get high K's and low walks/tacos

it's not that hard to pick up, i did fantasy for the first time last year, went into it knowing basically nothing since i hadn't followed baseball since 2004, and had never followed it on a sabermetrics level, and i ended up doing fine.
the main thing i did wrong was dropping josh hamilton before opening day because i had drafted too many OFs and not enough SPs. whoops.

I put some guys in the draft I want to root for (all Indians obv) and then let the computer work its magic. This is a recipe for fantasy league tears btw.

Hey you guys - does anyone want to do my draft for me? I know that kind of defeats the purpose but I've just found out I have obligatory choir practice before the concert that night and the timings just don't work.
If anyone's up for repping me let me know - basically you can choose whoever you like but with a slight prefernce for Rockies players :)
― Mark C, Friday, 27 March 2009 12:19 (sixteen years ago)
you can set your draft up beforehand I believe

― Mark C, Friday, 27 March 2009 15:09 (sixteen years ago)
You rank your players and if they're available the computer will choose them in that order. After all your players are chosen (by you or someone else) and you still have open slots the computer will begin to select what it thinks is the best player to fill your positions.

he, he. i can't be there for the draft tomorrow but i'm in a few other leagues and plugged in a bunch of favorites and sleepers into the autopicker.
re: the yankees, as a fan, it's not surprising when you run projections into an index and compare against yahoo adp (popular perception) to see just how terrible declining assets like jeter are. texiera and sabathia come out clean, but o wait, they're buying at the top of the market. what's really depressing is seeing all these stealth value players pop up again and the again on the red sox' roster. i'll tell you who they are after the draft ;)
i have prince fielder in two leagues now. in a money work league 12 team basic 5x5 stats i ended up getting him yet again. so for this league the highest ranked undrafted player was jason giambi. i found these two 2008 lines fascinating:
Fielder (25th pick)Player Action O-Rank Owned H/AB R HR RBI SB AVG OPS (Mil - 1B) 19 99% 162/588 86 34 102 3 .276 .879
Giambi (undrafted)Player Action O-Rank Owned H/AB R HR RBI SB AVG OPS (Oak - 1B) 226 55% 113/458 68 32 96 2 .247 .875
from 2008 stats they're essentially the same player save for 30 points of batting average and a couple more runs. i realize the 2009 projections tell a different tale but i kind of found this interesting.
― sanskrit, Saturday, 28 March 2009 23:33 (sixteen years ago)
difference being they're on opposite sides of the age/performance curve and prince is only 1 season removed from a 50hr season which he could forseeably replicate

autodraft is so stupid about pitchers and W's ><
― bnw, Monday, 30 March 2009 02:54 (sixteen years ago)
After the draft, I realized that middle relievers (i.e. holds guys) tend to get tagged with a bunch of blown saves for coming in with runners on in the seventh and giving up the tying run. So unless you sacrifice the holds category and stock your bullpen with pure closers, it's hard to do all that well in save %age. Gotta think about this one some more.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 30 March 2009 11:17 (sixteen years ago)
Good point. If I had the relievers I have (or am still hoping to get via drop/add) this year LAST YEAR, I would have been down a total of 11 BS, but at least they would have helped out in more than a couple other categories (not that I've compared my bullpen to the others). Hm.
Anyone play before in a league w/ save %? How did you do? Who won and with what percentage?
― Andy K, Monday, 30 March 2009 13:10 (sixteen years ago)
never seen it before. another league i'm in this year has quality starts which, while sort of a subjective, mickey mouse stat is still sort of an interesting limiting factor.

― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 30 March 2009 13:41 (sixteen years ago)
And I'm probably going to be making a bunch more changes since my draft was a combination of snap-judgment/non-thorough rearranging (w/ no PECOTA consultation), awful auto-picking, and distracted/semi-frantic self-picking (like wtf did I take new AL East pitcher Saito when, say, Okajima was available?).
― Andy K, Monday, 30 March 2009 13:55 (sixteen years ago)

hey playas, i got a message from cankles for y'all:
hey guys, I'm reviving my league from last year cuz I wanted to play a roto league w/SABR-ish stats (i don't think yahoo does LD percentage or GB/FB ratio yet unfortunately ;_ - i sent invites out to everyone from last year. here's the league info:
League ID#: 324415 League Name: buttcrazy bird Password: satana Custom League URL: http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/urrr
now, one thing i should note is that it's a MINIMUM MAINTENANCE LEAGUE, ie. there's no bench spots which means you won't have to set your rosters every day!!! i think it'll make it a lot more appealing for a lot of us who tend to lose interest as the season wears on. it's a LIVE DRAFT, and I currently have the drafting time set for FRIDAY APRIL 17th @ 10:15 pm, but I can change this around depending on what's best for yall. I'm sure not all of you will be returning but I'm cool with just picking up random pps off yahoo or whatever to fill the ranks. here's the roster/stat setup (25-man roster, 13x13 scoring):
Roster Positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, CI, MI, LF, CF, RF, OF, Util, Util, SP, SP, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, RP, RP, RP, RP, RP, DL, DL, DL, DL, DL Stat Categories: R, H, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, BB, GIDP, AVG, OBP, SLG, XBH, NSB, W, OUT, BB, K, HLD, ERA, WHIP, K/BB, K/9, H/9, BB/9, QS, NSV
i'll probably stick with this for now. having 7 RPs seems weird, but i think it'll be funny to see everyone fighting over middle reliever scraps
― fucken cumlord (omar little), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 19:28 (sixteen years ago)
hey got a question, mostly because i'm probably confusing roto with h2h. in the ilxor league i have beltran and dan murphy in the outfield. while happy with them this becomes a problem on mets travel days when i have only one active outfielder.
should i diversify my outfielders teams or does it not matter? it just occurred to me a sec ago that you're limited to 3x162 outfielder games, so maybe there's no problem here.
― sanskrit, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 19:35 (sixteen years ago)
its not a huge problem when you're limited to 3x162 OF games but if there's a decent OF available you might want to have one on the bench anyway
― ۞_۞ (ciderpress), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 19:47 (sixteen years ago)
Beltran I wouldn't worry about, but if Murphy ever loses playing time to Sheffield or etc., then you will start to run a deficit. If Beltran is playing every day, then he will get 162 starts and that's that.
If I have four outfielders who are all playing well, I try to play them as much as possible, because you never know when someone will get hurt. As the season continues, making up a deficit can be difficult.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 20:06 (sixteen years ago)
The other day, when it was announced that my starting catcher would be sitting, my backup had already started his game, so I was sorta screwed. Luckily my backup went hitless -- a good deficit.

It's amazing these chuckleheads are in fourth. STILL waiting for the first decent 6/6+ inning start. Good thing we can't/aren't using QS.
― Meli'sma Morgan (Andy K), Thursday, 16 April 2009 19:11 (sixteen years ago)
I'm looking forward to seeing how my knee-jerk reaction to trade Howard for Sabathia will look after the season's over.
― WmC, Friday, 17 April 2009 20:07 (sixteen years ago)
Howard ain't doing much
― bnw, Friday, 17 April 2009 20:09 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, and he had just GIDP'd three times in one game for me. Still, it's a long season, etc etc etc
― WmC, Friday, 17 April 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)
its a bit early to give up on sabathia but it will probably wind up being an even trade so long neither gets hurt.
― sanskrit, Friday, 17 April 2009 20:42 (sixteen years ago)
Oh! I didn't mean to imply I'm giving up on Sabathia at all. I'm still happy at having made the trade -- I needed pitching, already had Loney to step in at 1B. Just idly wondering how it's going to turn out.
― WmC, Friday, 17 April 2009 20:46 (sixteen years ago)
I forgot how much fantasy baseball stresses me out at times.

To all of you with any decent pitching at all... I HATE YOU.

― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Saturday, 18 April 2009 16:05 (sixteen years ago)
die.
The Eric Stults Experiment aka Operation Zito Opponent has given my team its only not-bad start ("not bad" in this case means a win AND one decent rate OR counting stat, OH BOY). There have been maybe two or three bad starts and the rest have been horrible.
― Meli'sma Morgan (Andy K), Saturday, 18 April 2009 16:11 (sixteen years ago)
none of u bustas can complain abt pitching when i ran wang & dice-k out there their 1st 2 starts
― johnny crunch, Saturday, 18 April 2009 19:08 (sixteen years ago)
o & i fully expect wang 2 pitch well 2day now that ive benched him
― johnny crunch, Saturday, 18 April 2009 19:09 (sixteen years ago)
Oh I can complain about pitching. The starter I've gotten the most production out of so far is Kenshin Kawakami.
― WmC, Saturday, 18 April 2009 19:20 (sixteen years ago)
BE VERY GLAD YOU SAT WANG, SIR!
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Saturday, 18 April 2009 21:43 (sixteen years ago)
Today I checked my mail and noticed my friend traded a couple players with his brother (in our league). I drove over to my friend's house when he wasn't home and asked his brother about our fantasy baseball league. He had no idea he was in one.
I caught my friend cheating, I think our whole league of friends is messed up now. What a doosh.

― sanskrit, Monday, 20 April 2009 11:59 (sixteen years ago)
Your league commish should expel both teams, if possible. It seems like the only fair thing to do.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 20 April 2009 12:42 (sixteen years ago)
that would be the appropriate thing.
a friend of mine had that happen in some random league - only the guy doing it *was* the commish!!

hahaha, somehow Yahoo has translated Mike Gonzalez' 0.1 inning win into a perfect game for me in my other league.
― WmC, Thursday, 23 April 2009 02:03 (sixteen years ago)
ha I got a W from him and a save from Franklin = .2 innings b/n them

― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 23 April 2009 19:49 (sixteen years ago)
so in my other league i picked up ellsbury in a trade just before he started to heat up.and have now flipped him for Nelson Cruz.i'm already fine for sb so i figured i'd be better off with a more well-rounded outfielder, stats-wise.
thoughts?
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 27 April 2009 02:32 (sixteen years ago)
It depends on the stats for your league!

I can't spare any offense, sorry.
I have room for three of these five losers today -- what do y'all recommend?David AardsmaBrian WilsonKevin GreggBobby SeayArthur Rhodes
It's gotten so bad that I'm even asking the competition for advice.
― WmC, Monday, 27 April 2009 18:11 (sixteen years ago)
I think I should herd all of them into a small shed and light it on fire.
I'd probably keep Aardsma, Wilson, and Gregg.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Monday, 27 April 2009 18:12 (sixteen years ago)
i like wilson and gregg more than the other 3
― ۞_۞ (ciderpress), Monday, 27 April 2009 18:20 (sixteen years ago)
Sit 'em/start 'em decisions are very much like playing poker, I've decided. "Hmm, maybe I better not play suited king-rag under the gun..." and then you see a flop that would have given you the nuts, including the ace that pairs some other dong with more chips than sense...in other words, Clint Barmes goes 2/4 with a homer yesterday from my bench while Stephen Drew goes on the DL.
― WmC, Monday, 27 April 2009 18:24 (sixteen years ago)
Here's a question. Is it possible to get a hold in a game that doesn't qualify for a save?
― WmC, Monday, 27 April 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)
ya - if the save gets blown the hold will still count.
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 27 April 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

― ~*GAME 2 SNYPA*~ (omar little), Monday, 27 April 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)
cool -- what about games where the lead is too big for a save? Like if the Cubs are up 6-1 and Gregg or Marmol pitch a scoreless 9th just to get some work in? Is that a hold?
― WmC, Monday, 27 April 2009 19:04 (sixteen years ago)
don't think so
a hold is the same thing as a save but not at the end of the game, as far as i know
so a save is a game-ending hold
― ۞_۞ (ciderpress), Monday, 27 April 2009 19:17 (sixteen years ago)
okay here's a goofy oneCubs take 8-0 lead into the 8th; Gregg gives up 6 earned runs, Marmol pitches the 9th and gets the save in an 8-6 final. Does Gregg get a hold?
― WmC, Monday, 27 April 2009 20:25 (sixteen years ago)
no, because he entered the game with a lead of more than 3 runs

nolasco pitched well in 3 innings against the d-backs on mon night before it got rained out - it was the d-backs i know but he looked good + having watched basically all of his starts, his stuff is still there but he's just having like one bad inning a game - i'd keep him if you think the ppl in your league are discernible to the point where you won't be able to get him back if you drop him and he turns it on - not to mention that he was a borderline fantasy player until the second half last year when he dominated, so you never know

indeed - ok thx
― oj da hoosman (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 21 May 2009 19:50 (sixteen years ago)
Meche has a 4.60 ERA. You'd be trading Ethier while he's slumping for a guy who isn't pitching well on a team that is possibly overperforming. On the other hand, Ethier is possibly not as good as some of the dudes who are available on waivers.
Short version, I don't think this decision will make or break your season.

― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Friday, 22 May 2009 00:14 (sixteen years ago)

― Tito Linndrum (Andy K), Friday, 22 May 2009 00:44 (sixteen years ago)
i picked up nick johnson cuz i have second lowest average in the league and he's hitting .330 - i counter proposed ethier straight up for matt cain. i think it's a pretty fair deal, if anything im on the wrong end of the buy low/sell high deal. will report back
basically i figure that if i can unload ethier and pick up dye i'll be trading etheir for two players

I figured that sitting Brett Myers against the Yankees was a no-brainer (nine game win streak, Yankee Stadium is a launching pad), but he pitched eight innings for the win. Pitching against A.J. Burnett must be the factor that trumps everything else.

RHP Ricky Nolasco, a 15-game winner in 2008, was optioned to Class AAA New Orleans after allowing eight runs in two innings Friday night. "That's not the Ricky Nolasco we saw last year," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Before it gets any worse, let's try and get it better." Nolasco's record fell to 2-5 with a 9.07 ERA after Florida's 15-2 loss to the Rays. He was the team's ace last season at 15-8 with a 3.52 ERA.(Yahoo! Sports)

i trust your opinion re the tigers. is owning dontrelle worth it? my pitching is pretty dire compared to the rest of my league so i'm looking for any type of boost i can get. other ppl i could pick up include rick porcello, ross ohlendorf, jason marquis, umbaldo etc etc
basically does it seem like he's going to be consistent enough to warrant any type of ownership?
thankin u
― some people wait a lifetime for a momus like this (J0rdan S.), Monday, 25 May 2009 05:28 (sixteen years ago)
I'd pick up just about any one of those before Dontrelle, unless you want to make things interesting (like me, though my staff has been decimated by injuries and various degrees of somewhat unexpected shittiness). He looks much improved, but he's high risk/minimal reward at best right now, especially when it comes to K, K/BB, WHIP.
Porcello has given up three runs in four starts this month...
― Tito Linndrum (Andy K), Monday, 25 May 2009 13:10 (sixteen years ago)
In Dontrelle's defense, Leyland left him in too long yesterday. He should have had one earned run in six innings instead of three in 6.2.

that's not entirely right.. and i don't to sound like a dick, but just as much of it if not more is the relative performance of the other teams.
which is why a pretty great pitching\hitting combo on sunday sent me back 4 points and yesterday's ted lilly disaster put me up 2.5 points..

Yeah, of course it also depends on what the other teams are doing, but more often than not, hitting .536 will earn you something.
The FPCT is all bunched up right now, so three errors in a day can drop you four or five points in the standings (I think this is what happened with me).

dealwithkhalil's former all-star OF Alfonso Soriano voiced his approval of management returning for another season. He is batting .240 and continues too see ample playing time in spite of protests from fans.

I can't beat that, but:
Round 2: Manny Ramírez -- his suspension basically was the final death gasp of my team.Round 3: Brandon Webb -- at least you got to have Santana for most of the season!Round 5: David Ortiz, which was a profoundly bad decision even before he regressed from his 2008 numbers.Round 6: Carlos Mármol, who lost his job to Kevin Gregg like two days after I drafted him, and sucked anyway.Round 10: Carlos DegadlolRound 11: Pablo Sandoval, who I promptly DROPPED during his only rough period so far in his career.Round 12: Jose Arredondo, who didn't get hurt or anything but LOL @me for drafting that dude.

5. (62) Rafael Furcal6. (79) Dan Uggla
my downfall right there, knew how hard it was to find good fantasy middle infielders and overpaid for these slugs.

Pretty sure at least 40 of my 52 moves are DL-related, though no real crushing long-term blows, unless you count Volquez/Dusty.

nah i've had people tell me in person whose on their team all kid on christmas day excited "ryan braun, and joe mauer, and derr and derr derr derr". but take your top three picks and there's probably 500 other teams with those same guys.
it's your last eight picks that really determine your season
― sanskrit, Friday, 18 September 2009 20:35 (sixteen years ago)
only one of my last eight panned out at all for me:
14. (186) Heath Bell15. (207) Dan Wheeler16. (214) Hiroki Kuroda17. (235) Orlando Cabrera18. (242) Adam LaRoche19. (263) Chris Snyder20. (270) Ty Wigginton21. (291) Randy Winn

14. (194) Scot Shields 15. (199) Takashi Saito16. (222) Leo Núñez17. (227) Denard Span 18. (250) Fausto Carmona 19. (255) Ramón Hernández 20. (278) Gary Sheffield 21. (283) David DeJesús
Best undrafted pickup was probably Randy Wolf.

(225) Fred Lewis - dumped for Span18. (252) Jed Lowrie - ugh19. (253) J.J. Putz - UGH20. (280) Aaron Hill - BOOSH21. (281) Kendry Morales - i should not have dropped this man
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Friday, 18 September 2009 22:43 (sixteen years ago)
my best waiver pick-up would be Sandoval, without a doubt. sort of makes up for the Kendry bone-head move.
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Friday, 18 September 2009 22:45 (sixteen years ago)
i always feel pretty good about one "reach" pick and this year it was heath bell but looking back i have no idea wtf i was thinking with half of those guys.
my best waiver pick-ups were zobrist, upton, and montero. ortiz was ok but i'm not sure he really helped my team.
― omar little, Friday, 18 September 2009 22:48 (sixteen years ago)
well of course the wire is crucial. don't forget your grab of j.p. howell. one night i went hmm howell would be a great pickup, but i need holds.. how about bruney instead?
i didnt think i abandoned my team but now i realize i forgot to start arroyo today. in the spirit of this:
i have prince fielder in two leagues now. in a money work league 12 team basic 5x5 stats i ended up getting him yet again. so for this league the highest ranked undrafted player was jason giambi. i found these two 2008 lines fascinating:Fielder (25th pick)Player Action O-Rank Owned H/AB R HR RBI SB AVG OPS(Mil - 1B) 19 99% 162/588 86 34 102 3 .276 .879Giambi (undrafted)Player Action O-Rank Owned H/AB R HR RBI SB AVG OPS(Oak - 1B) 226 55% 113/458 68 32 96 2 .247 .875from 2008 stats they're essentially the same player save for 30 points of batting average and a couple more runs. i realize the 2009 projections tell a different tale but i kind of found this interesting.― sanskrit, Saturday, March 28, 2009 7:33 PM (5 months ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalinkdifference being they're on opposite sides of the age/performance curve and prince is only 1 season removed from a 50hr season which he could forseeably replicate― ۞_۞ (ciderpress), Sunday, March 29, 2009 12:55 AM (5 months ago) Bookmark

yeah no shit about the 27 peak curve, but this season has been a perfect illustration of it. of course there are counter examples like ibanez but it's kind of fascinating how it played out just as we expected.
anyway, my point was, i took ellsbury first pick of the 6th round in the ilxor league (71st overall). i got a deal on his adp and he even exceeded my projections, he's having a great season. now, hindsight is 20/20 but i kind of found this CF best worlds wire pickup frankenstein interesting:
if you took michael bourn off the wire to start to season (bland start) then dropped him for juan pierre after manny's ban, then nyjer morgan after manny's return w/ pierre's playtime cut, then rajai davis after morgan's snapped finger, it would look like this (stats through today):
ellsburyHR RBI R BA NETSB OPS7 52 81 0.302 52 0.769
fast as shit CF composite wire pickups HR RBI R BA NETSB OPS3 57 101 0.336 45 0.835
again, it's a little unfair to line up three white hot runs, but there wasn't a ton of competition for these guys in our league until they really started to go nuts. plus i was able snag 3/4 of this run in another league.
― sanskrit, Sunday, 20 September 2009 00:17 (sixteen years ago)
11. (147) Pablo Sandoval (dropped, unwisely)12. (162) Jose Arredondo (dropped)13. (175) Cameron Maybin (dropped)14. (190) Xavier Nady (dropped)15. (203) Hank Blalock (dropped)16. (218) Ian Stewart (dropped)17. (231) Chris Volstad (should've dropped)18. (246) Armando Galarraga (dropped)19. (259) Elvis Andrus (decent steals guy, I guess)20. (274) Jeff Clement (dropped)21. (287) Manuel Corpas (dropped)
Probably my worst fantasy baseball draft ever.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Sunday, 20 September 2009 00:25 (sixteen years ago)
i always try to keep big trades to a minimum and try to plug in weak spots with waiver work. i really don't try to panic on the big dudes i've got and prefer to hold onto them (i got burned on an erik bedard drop a couple seasons back.) my two trades this year were cutting bait on offensive players for pitchers. aaron harang for pat burrell was pretty useless for both sides and i got lucky on matt cain for milton bradley.

CONGRATULATIONS, IN AMBIORIX BURGOS
― Andy K, Monday, 5 October 2009 09:22 (sixteen years ago)
Yes, congrats! Quite the dominating win.
Me, I spent 874383 consecutive days in 10th place, then briefly climbed up to 9th before settling back in comfortable old 10th spot again. Not a season to write home about. My hitters badly underperformed (except for the first week of the season) and I was scrambling the whole season to plug holes in my offense.

Very happy with second place. Team name will either remain the same next year or change to Colon/King AC (Bartolo Colon/Ray King Athletic Club).

congrats justin, on dominating 1st place this year. your trophy is in the mail (no it is not).
so who would be open to turning this into a keeper league next year? i've always wanted to try one and give or take a few - we seem to have the same lot each season. you guys are a great bunch to play against and i think it'd be fun.

to answer WmC's question - it looks like we can make the settings whatever we like. although yahoo's not a huge help with info on the keeper settings.
xpost - i forget who the other canuks are! i finished 6, so between you and me, right now the Lighfoot cup will be parading down young street in my arms this year!

i have visited our beautiful sister to the north and the hockey team i back is the edmonton oilers but thats abt as close as i get!
i would be down for a keeper league. is there some way to weigh who ppl keep (not in a prince fielder sense) to make it fairer?
― johnny crunch, Monday, 5 October 2009 16:20 (sixteen years ago)
i think you can keep whomever you like - we just decide on the number. there might be special consideration for rookies (think i read about a setting for that in some league)?
i wish yahoo had more info on the workings.
also - go Flames!
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 5 October 2009 16:27 (sixteen years ago)
these were the rules my buddy set in a H2H keeper league we just started this year ~ obviously we all knew them at the outset and i gotta say it did affect some of my decisions thru out so there's that..
--you cannot keep for the next year anyone drafted in the first 2 rounds --for the first player you keep, you give up a pick 1 round ahead of where he was drafted; for the second, it's 2 rounds, etc. (ex: you pick David Ortiz in round 4, you can keep him the next year by giving up your 3rd round pick) --you can keep as many of your drafted players as you want that remain on your roster all season (and ones acquired by trade) --you can keep no more than 3 free agents, and they count as being taken in the last round of the draft - which should be round 24 (these are guys you pick up later and did not draft yourself) --we'll have a consolation bracket playoff, where the winner gets top pick the following year
― johnny crunch, Monday, 5 October 2009 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 5 October 2009 16:36 (sixteen years ago)
yup
― johnny crunch, Monday, 5 October 2009 16:36 (sixteen years ago)
i know abt the rookie thing youre alluding to also i think...you can have a rule linked to a players mlb status and be allowed to keep guys for free who dont reach the set IP or AB #s. again, it affects a lot how you add/drop esp late in the year. also it might only work in a $-bid type league? thats where ive used it b4
― johnny crunch, Monday, 5 October 2009 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

does yahoo allow for hacking mass style leagues? i.e. a league with categories like pitcher walks, hitter strikeouts, blown saves, caught stealing, etc
obviously you have to find enough counting stats that work properly for it but it could be fun
― extremely demanding on the hardware (ciderpress), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 02:05 (sixteen years ago)
you could now, i guess - hitter Ks, GIDP, errors, caught stealing - pitchers hr, bb, hbp, runs, balks! not alot, but doable.
