Yeah, "say it ain't so, Shasta" was two years ago. Last year had to be the most drama-free season we've ever had! The low level of trade talk had a lot to do with that, though.

Shutouts are better than cycles and no-hitters, but they're a pretty empty category.

I have had bad experiences with ESPN.

Such as?

For one thing, I think most fantasy players I know tend to use Yahoo for most of their leagues, and an ESPN league requires them to make the extra effort to go to a different website, and that leads to a lot of players dropping out early or not trying as hard or whatever.

We did ESPN for the ILX fantasy football league this season, and I found the system incredibly inflexible and weird, but that not be a problem for baseball.

Yeah, I was in the fantasy football league -- I don't remember anything weird or inflexible, except maybe not being able to make roster moves during the weekend, but like you say, that's n/a for baseball.

I'm just trying to save a few bucks everywhere I can this year. Economy's going to take a big chunk out of me.

Yahoo doesn't cost anything unless you get stat tracker, which I have never bothered to purchase in 10+ years of using the site.

you can just click the little link to the box score and get your live stats there rather than pay $10 for them to appear on the same page as your roster

the free stats are nice. and stat tracker is my lifeblood during night classes! but yahoo does have familiarity plus lol trophy case and can keep track of carryover leagues. I would still vote yahoo b/c thats where are all my other fantasy action is.

I don't see the appeal of a big league, myself. That's just more people to get bored with it after the first month passes and most managers realize they can't win.

i could care less about the size as long as there's at least 10. but what i like about our league is we can come here and trash talk, have fits of self-pity, or discuss trades. it's always nicer to deal with people you at least "internet know", you know?!

the reason why i'd like it to get to 20 is because it makes every little strategic move count a whole lot more. taking a risk on wieters and seeing him turn into the next longoria makes a huge difference, where in an 8 man league every team is already like a mini all star team.

well we're well past 8 already. and i think we still have a few more locals who've yet to sign up (i made a list but it's at home). so i think we'll land somewhere between 12-15. which is fine in my books. (20 can be a little much since the people at the bottom have quite literally no hope of ever even getting close to the top)

also: i was thinking next year maybe we might want to start us up a keeper league? usually the same lot of us every year, so why not?! (never done the keeper thing before but would love to be in one)

World Baseball Classic as a way of forcing health/injury problems out into the open pre-draft (classic) vs. WBC as a cause of those health/injury problems (dud)...classic and/or dud?

ade your pitching staff leaves a lot to be desired, imo. Might want to think about trading some of your depth for better starting pitching. I mean, obviously Timmy is great but I don't think he'll win 20 games, and then after that I see innings eaters, rookies, and gambles.

the stat setup is really weird in this league tho, allow me 2 elucidate:

The nonpredictive stuff I just ignore. I've routinely been in the position of having great K/BB ERA WHIP but no wins, and it's something that just drives me crazy.

it's not that hard to pick up, i did fantasy for the first time last year, went into it knowing basically nothing since i hadn't followed baseball since 2004, and had never followed it on a sabermetrics level, and i ended up doing fine.

the main thing i did wrong was dropping josh hamilton before opening day because i had drafted too many OFs and not enough SPs. whoops.

i won my first year, but that's mostly cuz i traded for pujols (06 season) at a key juncture

You rank your players and if they're available the computer will choose them in that order. After all your players are chosen (by you or someone else) and you still have open slots the computer will begin to select what it thinks is the best player to fill your positions.

he, he. i can't be there for the draft tomorrow but i'm in a few other leagues and plugged in a bunch of favorites and sleepers into the autopicker.

re: the yankees, as a fan, it's not surprising when you run projections into an index and compare against yahoo adp (popular perception) to see just how terrible declining assets like jeter are. texiera and sabathia come out clean, but o wait, they're buying at the top of the market. what's really depressing is seeing all these stealth value players pop up again and the again on the red sox' roster. i'll tell you who they are after the draft ;)

i have prince fielder in two leagues now. in a money work league 12 team basic 5x5 stats i ended up getting him yet again. so for this league the highest ranked undrafted player was jason giambi. i found these two 2008 lines fascinating:

difference being they're on opposite sides of the age/performance curve and prince is only 1 season removed from a 50hr season which he could forseeably replicate

autodraft is so stupid about pitchers and W's ><

After the draft, I realized that middle relievers (i.e. holds guys) tend to get tagged with a bunch of blown saves for coming in with runners on in the seventh and giving up the tying run. So unless you sacrifice the holds category and stock your bullpen with pure closers, it's hard to do all that well in save %age. Gotta think about this one some more.

Good point. If I had the relievers I have (or am still hoping to get via drop/add) this year LAST YEAR, I would have been down a total of 11 BS, but at least they would have helped out in more than a couple other categories (not that I've compared my bullpen to the others). Hm.

Anyone play before in a league w/ save %? How did you do? Who won and with what percentage?

never seen it before. another league i'm in this year has quality starts which, while sort of a subjective, mickey mouse stat is still sort of an interesting limiting factor.

ya - looking at my roster i think that little "make things interesting" stat may come back to haunt me.

And I'm probably going to be making a bunch more changes since my draft was a combination of snap-judgment/non-thorough rearranging (w/ no PECOTA consultation), awful auto-picking, and distracted/semi-frantic self-picking (like wtf did I take new AL East pitcher Saito when, say, Okajima was available?).

We had 2 or 3 more roster spots last year, didn't we? Pitching bench. Interesting wrench to throw into the works if it was intentional.

hey got a question, mostly because i'm probably confusing roto with h2h. in the ilxor league i have beltran and dan murphy in the outfield. while happy with them this becomes a problem on mets travel days when i have only one active outfielder.

should i diversify my outfielders teams or does it not matter? it just occurred to me a sec ago that you're limited to 3x162 outfielder games, so maybe there's no problem here.

its not a huge problem when you're limited to 3x162 OF games but if there's a decent OF available you might want to have one on the bench anyway

Beltran I wouldn't worry about, but if Murphy ever loses playing time to Sheffield or etc., then you will start to run a deficit. If Beltran is playing every day, then he will get 162 starts and that's that.

If I have four outfielders who are all playing well, I try to play them as much as possible, because you never know when someone will get hurt. As the season continues, making up a deficit can be difficult.

The other day, when it was announced that my starting catcher would be sitting, my backup had already started his game, so I was sorta screwed. Luckily my backup went hitless -- a good deficit.

Meche has a 4.60 ERA. You'd be trading Ethier while he's slumping for a guy who isn't pitching well on a team that is possibly overperforming. On the other hand, Ethier is possibly not as good as some of the dudes who are available on waivers.

Short version, I don't think this decision will make or break your season.

I'd pick up just about any one of those before Dontrelle, unless you want to make things interesting (like me, though my staff has been decimated by injuries and various degrees of somewhat unexpected shittiness). He looks much improved, but he's high risk/minimal reward at best right now, especially when it comes to K, K/BB, WHIP.

In Dontrelle's defense, Leyland left him in too long yesterday. He should have had one earned run in six innings instead of three in 6.2.

yep. what's odd is that RP and saves are especially scarce in deep H2H leagues. and you would think the save % category would make people here even pickier about who they're getting em from.

Yeah, of course it also depends on what the other teams are doing, but more often than not, hitting .536 will earn you something.

The FPCT is all bunched up right now, so three errors in a day can drop you four or five points in the standings (I think this is what happened with me).

i havent streamed pitchers (yet) in this league, but that's a decent strategy against the nationals. unfortunately it's now becoming a decent strategy against the Mets too.

also having buehrle and starting him yesterday is kind of a great feeling until you realize that one perfect game plus a 0.1 IP matt capps 5 run meltdown equals an era 5.00 complete game.

Running a Fifth-Starter Day Camp this past week has been a bust, pretty much.

well ive gotten that desperate and it's sort of working out. Lannan 1 er in 8 innings, 1 bb, 5 hits. thats better than ive gotten out of johan the last few starts. it's kind of funny to drop the pitcher back to the wire before he''s even tossed that day, in advance of the next piece of meat.. :)

Cueto gets one more start to be not-useless and then it's goodbye for him.

Everth Cabrera is going to be a good sleeper SS pick next year. In 179 ab, he has 6 triples, 15 sb, and a .770 OPS. Pretty good for a guy who had never played above A ball before this season.

i have prince fielder in two leagues now. in a money work league 12 team basic 5x5 stats i ended up getting him yet again. so for this league the highest ranked undrafted player was jason giambi. i found these two 2008 lines fascinating:

yeah no shit about the 27 peak curve, but this season has been a perfect illustration of it. of course there are counter examples like ibanez but it's kind of fascinating how it played out just as we expected.

anyway, my point was, i took ellsbury first pick of the 6th round in the ilxor league (71st overall). i got a deal on his adp and he even exceeded my projections, he's having a great season. now, hindsight is 20/20 but i kind of found this CF best worlds wire pickup frankenstein interesting:

if you took michael bourn off the wire to start to season (bland start) then dropped him for juan pierre after manny's ban, then nyjer morgan after manny's return w/ pierre's playtime cut, then rajai davis after morgan's snapped finger, it would look like this (stats through today):

Probably my worst fantasy baseball draft ever.

i always try to keep big trades to a minimum and try to plug in weak spots with waiver work. i really don't try to panic on the big dudes i've got and prefer to hold onto them (i got burned on an erik bedard drop a couple seasons back.) my two trades this year were cutting bait on offensive players for pitchers. aaron harang for pat burrell was pretty useless for both sides and i got lucky on matt cain for milton bradley.

Yes, congrats! Quite the dominating win.

Me, I spent 874383 consecutive days in 10th place, then briefly climbed up to 9th before settling back in comfortable old 10th spot again. Not a season to write home about. My hitters badly underperformed (except for the first week of the season) and I was scrambling the whole season to plug holes in my offense.

Very happy with second place. Team name will either remain the same next year or change to Colon/King AC (Bartolo Colon/Ray King Athletic Club).

congrats justin, on dominating 1st place this year. your trophy is in the mail (no it is not).

these were the rules my buddy set in a H2H keeper league we just started this year ~ obviously we all knew them at the outset and i gotta say it did affect some of my decisions thru out so there's that..

--you cannot keep for the next year anyone drafted in the first 2 rounds
--for the first player you keep, you give up a pick 1 round ahead of where he was drafted; for the second, it's 2 rounds, etc. (ex: you pick David Ortiz in round 4, you can keep him the next year by giving up your 3rd round pick)
--you can keep as many of your drafted players as you want that remain on your roster all season (and ones acquired by trade)
--you can keep no more than 3 free agents, and they count as being taken in the last round of the draft - which should be round 24 (these are guys you pick up later and did not draft yourself)
--we'll have a consolation bracket playoff, where the winner gets top pick the following year

i know abt the rookie thing youre alluding to also i think...you can have a rule linked to a players mlb status and be allowed to keep guys for free who dont reach the set IP or AB #s. again, it affects a lot how you add/drop esp late in the year. also it might only work in a $-bid type league? thats where ive used it b4

now that i look at things - it seems i might have had the best hitting team in VORPed Minds. led in AVG, OPS, runs - second in RBIs. being dead last in FPCT and GIDP is probably what kept me out of the top 3.

4th place is v. respectable after finishing 10th. we are trending in the right direction.
