Two on, two out, one-run lead, eighth inning.Jim Thome batting. You have Joakim Soria. You use Kyle Farnsworth.Gone.I know it happens all the time, but it’s really freaking stupid every single time. This is what the creation of the closer position has wrought: teams losing games, frequently, without using their best reliever, for no reason other than the misguided notion that getting three outs is their role, and getting four isn’t.(For that matter, you also have Ron Mahay. Why did you acquire him if not to have him face Jim Thome in the eighth inning of a one-run game? Ron Gardenhire lost the division last year for want of a similar clue and Jose Mijares.)Some people deserve to lose.

Goobs, have you had issues downloading NexDef and/or getting it to work? I can watch the four-bar broadcast fine but can't up the quality from there at all - it keeps telling me to install NexDef which I must have now done half a dozen times.
Also, I have to use IE to watch mlb.tv - Firefox won't work. Do you have any suggestions?
― Mark C, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 09:59 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah I've downloaded NexDef, and the HD 'works', it's just jittery as hell, pretty much unwatchable, so I switch it down to 3 or 4 bars and it's fine. I'm pretty sure it's my connection and not the NexDef that's the problem (for me, at least). I'm using Firefox, so no idea--do you have the most recent version?
Apparently tons of people are having problems (Yesterday, the MLB.tv support blog admitted lots of issues--definitely some with NexDef--and basically said they were getting to them; now they seem to have abandoned the whole 'support blog' concept.)
― otm in new york (G00blar), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 10:23 (seventeen years ago)
Thanks for that, I'll make do with what I've got at the moment and hopefully jump back in when mlb.tv have sorted it all out. I also only have 2mps broadband at the moment which might be a problem - that should change in a few weeks.
― Mark C, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 10:33 (seventeen years ago)
NexDef worked perfectly for me.
My setup: a Macbook, connected to the Futureweb via A WIRE (this cannot be stressed enough), Airport turned off, rebooted, no applications running besides Safari.
NexDef will never work on older machines because the new Flash-based player is too processor intensive.

My laptop is one week old and fairly high specced (though it's not a Mac) so I'd hope I can make it work okay with Vista.

Zito would have gotten through the first inning in 32 pitches, but Edgar Renteria did not bother to cover second base when Luis Rodriguez hit a grounder to Emmanuel Burriss, who flipped to Renteria trying to get the third out.
Did this look as hilarious as it reads?
― Andy K, Saturday, 11 April 2009 16:12 (seventeen years ago)
i like how it makes it sound like zito getting through the first in 32 pitches would have been an accomplishment.
― call all destroyer, Saturday, 11 April 2009 17:00 (seventeen years ago)
Not really. Renteria did bother to cover 2nd, he just waited way too long to get moving because he assumed Burriss would go for the easy out at first base. It was a relatively close play at 2nd, but if Renteria had covered 2nd immediately the guy would've been out by a mile.

i don't think this is necessarily otm. a very late time call was granted to him as beckett started his motion; the pitch slipped and sailed up by abreu's head. since beckett was looking back at second he didn't see the time call until it was too late. torii hunter came in yapping, as did sciosa. the angels are punks imo.

Asked if those words were spoken by the umpires since there were only Angels, Red Sox and umpires on the field, Hunter balked.
"I didn't say that," he answered. "It might have been the voices in my head."

MLB is averaging 4.96 runs per game so far in 2009, up from a league average 4.65 runs per game in 2008. It's pretty rare to see run scoring in April higher than the league average from the previous season.
The main culprit appears to be a rise in home run rate. Last April, there was ahome run hit every 43 plate appearances. That number ended the season at one per 38 PA, as the ball flew better in warmer weather. So far this year, we're at one home run per 34 plate appearances, accounting for 311 total home runs to date. At last year's pace, we'd only have 248 home runs.

Is there a way to listen to baseball radio broadcasts on the internet, except through MLB.com, which makes you pay for it? I don't have cable tv and I'm sick of "watching" Cardinal games on ESPN gamecast.

Yeah, turns out that's true with all MLB games carried on any internet stream. I didn't know that until last night. There are hundreds of little radio station affiliates that carry cardinal games, and last night I went through dozens of them, figuring that at least ONE of them would somehow ignore the ban, but nope.
Yeah, I guess I should just pony up the $15. One question though - who are the announcers on the mlb.com radio broadcasts? I mean, when I listen to a Cardinals game do I get Mike Shannon or some mlb.com schmuck?

Alomar scores legal victory
By Mike FishESPN.com
Former All-Star second baseman Roberto Alomar scored a legal victory Wednesday when an ex-girlfriend withdrew a $15 million civil suit, alleging that he had insisted upon unprotected sex during their relationship despite his having AIDS.
Ilya Dall, 31, who got divorced in 2007 and has two children, filed the bombshell lawsuit last January, claiming that the retired big-leaguer tested HIV-positive in February 2006. Alomar has insisted he's in good health and suggested Dall raised the accusations in a bid to "hurt" him. At the time, he characterized the lawsuit as "filled with lies."
Alomar and Dall, a competitive arm wrestler and spa owner, broke up last October. Dall reportedly lives in a $5 million, Queens, N.Y., home purchased by a trust set up by Alomar.
The settlement was reached as attorneys for Alomar, a 12-time All-Star, and Dall were scheduled to appear Friday for an initial conference in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn. Dall could not be reached, and her attorney Anthony Piacentini declined comment when reached by ESPN.com.
"The complaint was withdrawn, which means the lawsuit was withdrawn with prejudice," Charles Bach, who represents Alomar, told ESPN.com. "That speaks for itself. It is over."
Alomar, who splits his time between Florida and Puerto Rico, could not be reached for comment.
A career .300 hitter with 10 Gold Gloves, Alomar tops the list of first-time players up for election to the Hall of Fame next year. Alomar spent 17 seasons in the major leagues and was part of two World Series championships with the Toronto Blue Jays.

“Now, one of the main things I do after a game is the crossing of the arms. That’s on a T-shirt I wear underneath my jersey when I pitch. (He wore that T-shirt in an ESPN interview last month.) That’s just respecting the fighters and their commitment and determination and the hard work they put in.“And also it’s taking into consideration my own walks in life. For instance, when I cross my arms, I have my left hand in the fist and my right hand goes underneath pointing with my (index) finger. What I’ve taken into my own belief is that this finger represents one man. I’m that one person. And I can only go so far in life leaning on my own understandings and my own strength. The fist represents the power of the Holy Trinity: the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. The fist is symbolic of a circle. It’s never-ending. This strength will only continue to grow. So here’s the strength of God and the strength of man. And without him, I am nothing. I can only go so far in this life. But when I cross, I now have this one person with the strength of Christ, and I can do anything through Christ who strengthens me. I can get over any battles in life.“So I basically give respect to the ultimate fighting world and I also give respect to Christ, the audience of one that I play for. I don’t play for anything else. I play to impress Him and only Him and I must honor Him through defeat and also successes because I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for the strength that He gives me. Talent only goes so far. But faith gets you a little farther. So that’s what it is. It just represents my faith and trust in him, and letting him know and the world know that any believer that walks with Christ, or any walk of life you have, no matter where you are, I’m showing respect to you for your hard work, too. Because it’s not easy living in this world.”

9 hrs at 1/3 through the season is not bad in post 'roid era. The 'rats are right to be pissed off.
― bnw, Friday, 5 June 2009 19:46 (sixteen years ago)
given that the pirates have sucked for a long time and are barely threatening .500, let alone a playoff spot, they don't have a lot of standing to complain.
but mclouth was young, relatively cheap and well-liked (and once babysat by a certain ilx0r). good glove, willing to take a walk... you've got to give something to get something, but it does seem like there's other fat that would be more usefully trimmed.
― mookieproof, Friday, 5 June 2009 20:02 (sixteen years ago)
it's funny how divergent opinions on this deal are. seems fair to both sides tbh; braves hand got forced by having a shitty outfield so they had to give up some talent, but in return they get a solid, not amazing OF dude who should play every day through 2011. pirates make room for their best prospect and continue to stockpile pieces.

they've given up 9 runs this inning, which is STILL GOING.
Including two runs from walks with the bases loaded.
