Dexter Fowler. Are people following his season? 5 stolen bases last night, 2-4, 2 walks, and he's easily the brightest spot in an underwhelming season so far (Ianetta batting about .100, Tulo benched, Hawpe taking a ball to the neck, Cookie 0-3, etc. etc).
― Mark C, Tuesday, 28 April 2009 15:23 (seventeen years ago)
Fowler was on base four times for the Rockies, lining two singles and drawing two walks. He stole second and third on twice and scored three runs. His five thefts for the game tied Willy Taveras for second-most in Rockies history. The team record is six by Eric Young on the same day the team mark was set. Fowler had no idea he was closing in on the team record until a fan screamed at him. "Heard a guy say, 'Almost got the record, one more,'" Fowler said.

― mona je twit (Andy K), Tuesday, 28 April 2009 15:28 (seventeen years ago)
For what it's worth, Chris Young is one of the worst pitchers in baseball at holding runners, and the Padres catcher (Hundley last night, I think) was fucking up like crazy. But that doesn't take away from the fact that Fowler is fast as hell.

They do. Vin Scully always rambles about Youngs horrible numbers with the SB. I think in 06 or 07 runners were successful 100% against him.

While Recovering, Rockies’ Francis Revels in Physics of Pitching

“I think about this stuff a lot,” Francis, 28, said during his workout Wednesday. “Watching the way the sun moves and the stars move — people look up and see the moon, but I’ll see the phase it’s in and think what time of year it is, and the time since the last eclipse. You see it spinning around in a chair, the angular momentum of when you pull your legs in, you spin faster. The forces that when you’re riding a bike and lean, you don’t fall over because of the forces and vectors through the wheels. I can’t help it.”

Before Cook went down they had arguably the best rotation in the west, stat nerd wise. They also shored up their bullpen pretty well after the beginning of the season. Their pen had something like 8 ERA in those 10 games they lost to the Dodgers, which is essentially the difference in the division (for now at least.. ugh).
― mayor jingleberries, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 18:54 (sixteen years ago)
national media covering the rockies the past 10 days is kinda hilarious. and great.
also great, ubaldo.
however, the teams they've won series against over the past month or so: cubs, nats, dbacks, padres, reds, pirates, giants. teams they've lost series against: marlins, phillies, mets.
not doing very well against better offensive teams. also, they can't seem to get a hit in the first 3 innings against any pitcher north of just okay.
it's starting to feel like they're winning games on luck alone (and good pitching). and while that's certainly better than losing, it's not exactly the best place to be as a team.

As a Dodgers fan I feel the same way. We beat up on shitty teams but when a good team comes to town we get our asses kicked. See: St. Louis. Rockies extend Helton for 2 more years. uh, wtf?
― mayor jingleberries, Thursday, 11 March 2010 18:31 (sixteen years ago)
They deferred $10m of his salary to be paid around $1m a year until 2023.
This way they get two more years of Helton for basically free, letting him finish his career at the club, while freeing up a big chunk of change to re-sign De La Rosa/Hawpe/Francis or go after a strong FA. He gets to be a one-club demigod, the club is less hamstrung by his salary, and no-one has to worry about free agency.
To be honest as a newer Rockies supporter, I'm slightly more objective than the average Helton fan, but it's hard to see this as a bad move. He had one bad season, because of injury, and as his power has gone and he was never fast his skills are likely to fade less quickly than most. And ear in mind he was top 5 in OBP in the NL last season. This is a borderline Hall of Famer we're talking about, even taking LOLCORZ into consideration.

But he should have been pulled at the end of the 7th (he was well over 100 pitches by then), or at the very least after the lead-off double in the 8th. In the Rockies forum where I was watching the game EVERYONE wanted him out after the 7th. Except the manager, it seems.

Yeah, they're mental splits. Before last night I think it was .301 team average at Coors, .219 on the road. I'd normally say "no, it's just statistical noise", and it might be, but there is something about Coors that our power hitters just can't get enough of. I wonder how much is psychological? Those big green gaps must look awfully inviting - and their absence must feel pretty oppressive...

Wow, they just straight up released Brad Hawpe? He's having a bad year but this is a guy who had been really solid for the last few years. It's not like he's a Coors guy ... he hit .275/.372/.518 on the road last year. Is he too banged up to help someone?

― my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Thursday, 19 August 2010 17:07 (fifteen years ago)
he was like...historically bad at fielding the past 2 years, by all the defensive metrics. bbref has his 2008 defense being so bad that he was below replacement level despite hitting .283/.381/.498. he's a DH in the same way that david ortiz and jim thome are DH, he just literally can't play the field.
since no one wants a DH on their bench, his future would be with an AL team who can DH him full time. maybe the white sox?

― oreo speed wiggum (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 19 August 2010 19:08 (fifteen years ago)
yeah he was for a bit before they released him
i'd be surprised if he's completely fallen off a cliff hitting-wise, i think a smart AL team could try to fix him for a cheap DH next year
― ciderpress, Thursday, 19 August 2010 19:15 (fifteen years ago)
I think he'll be fine. I think we wouldn't have been able to bring him back for next season (he had a $10m option I think?), but I am more than a little surprised he's been released. Jim Tracy told him he wouldn't be playing much more this season (again, I'm not sure this is wise - by all accounts he seemed to be doing well at 1B and I don't know if Helton's going to be productive for the next 6 weeks) so, unsurprisingly, he asked to be released to allow him to play the rest of the season and earn a job for 2011.
He's always been a streaky player, and it's likely he's on the downward slope. But he's far from a Garrett Atkins - a superficially similar story from last season - and I believe and hope he'll be an above average pick-up for a contending team.

^^^ they are very hungry as well, each game at home is so intense it's like a playoff game each and every day. plus Major is a Dodger fan so they are going to hate. Rockies are not that good this year, the last two yes but this year they don't have enough.

Watching the NL West this year has been interesting. I just don't think the Rockies are that good, they are a third place team,(even if everyone is jumping on that bandwagon again). Loved how they played these last two years and even though they won 10 in a row recently they just don't seem to have the "it" factor. San Diego and San Francisco should finish ahead of this team this year. Plus both of those teams have better players, more spirit.
― Bee OK, Friday, 17 September 2010 04:07 (fifteen years ago)

That was so so horrible. Oh god, Rockies. How many ways can a team throw away a game gifted to them? From the Rockie's forum I post on:
There are plenty of blame to go around here. Jason Hammel is not proving to be the #3 starter the Rockies need him to be. After being walked intentionally in the first, Troy Tulowitzki started pressing, striking out three times and chasing bad pitches, made one official error and one costly unofficial error. Carlos Gonzalez stranded six base-runners, none more painful than the three in the 11th. Huston Street continues to struggle with location as he blew a save. Manny Delcarmen couldn't get three outs. Jim Tracy continues to push Matt Belisle too far and wouldn't bunt Young in the 11th. The offense was shut out for nine innings after the second inning. The staff threw four wild pitches, and [back-up catcher] Paul Phillips didn't do much to stop it.
Misery. There you go, Giants, it's yours to lose now!

In 75 games at Coors Field, the Rockies have hit .304 with 102 homers and 790 hits. Opponents have hit .258 with 67 homers and 698 hits. The Rockies have outscored visitors 452-345.
