"Leyland, comparing the Tigers' $83 million payroll to the Yankees (over $200 million): 'You go to the clothing store with $500 and I go with $100, you should come out with better stuff. You get a cashmere, and I get one of those itchy tweed things.'"

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 October 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

TIGGERS IN FIVE. Why? Because A) getting shellacked by the Royals is bound to light a fire, B) Mussina can't pitch every game, and C) Neifi Perez. Wang gets hosed. Kenny Rogers does not see the mound @ all. I-Rod singles (fuck), and goes goofy throwing out Jetes and Damon on the basepaths. A-Rod will "choke". Series MVP = Justin Verlander.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 October 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

I guess nobody has paid attention to Justin Verlander's 4.54ERA/1.55WHIP/.300BAA post-AS stats.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 2 October 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

Verlander is well-rested

Andy_K (Andy_K), Monday, 2 October 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

If that's what you want to call missing his last start due to fatigue in his throwing arm, I'm not gonna argue with you. But I will point out that he is at a career high in innings pitched (cf: Dontrelle Willis' in the 2003 playoffs).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 2 October 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sort of joking.

Poor post-AS stats are pretty widespread with the Tigers. Attention has been paid.

Haven't the slightest clue what to expect. Baseball --> baseball PLAYOFFS --> ???

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 2 October 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

I hate him because polyphonic is probably right -- he'll hit .500 in this series and the Yanks will win. Then we'll all have to pray to our respective gods that Minnesota or Oakland can eliminate them because the NL teams likely don't stand a chance of winning the WS.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 2 October 2006 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

Rany Jazayerli (free article) on how the Tigers CAN win:

"One of their right-handed hitters needs to shock the world by touching Mariano Rivera for a key hit somewhere along the line.

"They must keep Neifi Perez away from the field at all times. I recommend the Grand Hyatt on 42nd St. myself."

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 00:15 (nineteen years ago)

I still think Buck's got one of the finest pure broadcasting voices in the history of sports television. It's just a shame what he does with it (i.e. nothing). Him and McCarver's Yankee knobslobbing is just embarrassing. (I guess that's ONE thing he does with his voice.)

It was funny hearing McCarver get all excited for Tigers small-ball, correctly predicting the hit-and-run/double steal, and then seeing it not work out at ALL. And now the Yanks go up with nothin but sluggin.

I also have a hard time taking a 95-win team seriously.

The Blog Albom (Andy_K), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

one game = sss

Let's see if they can get a 96th.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

That trade for Casey was just pointless. He wasn't all that to begin with, he sucked when he came to Detroit, and his Veteran Omoxycilin is going to do more damage than good. Use the OTHER guy from the Pirates to play 1B, you shitwits.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

Tiggs are likely an 85-win team that got lucky.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

But the other guy's so fwagile.

When was the last time someone spent the entirety of August in AAA, only to be replaced by someone more volatile, after playing every day with a .270 average?

xp

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

SOMEONE's feeling lucky.

Tiggs are likely an 85-win team that got lucky.

Or they're a 105-win team that got unlucky (which would be just as bizarre since baseball is as straightforward as tic-tac-toe).

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, don't go and paraphrase John Sterling now.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

105-win teams do not hack like that.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

It would probably take a pitching staff with the best ERA in the league.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

That 5-run third was painful.

My wife, seeing the dejected me, said, "The Tigers aren't supposed to win anyways".

GRRRRRRR.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

Is this game going to be rained out?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

Pre-emptive rain delay, apparently.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

10:00 start is likely

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

Or 9:45

Or tomorrow afternoon

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

The new term is "weather delay"? They don't want to discriminate against snow or unexpected swarms of gnats brought on by fluctuations in humidity?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

What was Leyland thinking leaving Robertson in to face Abreu with second and third with two outs in the sixth? I keep hearing that the Tigers have such hard throwing and great relievers, I would think that being down two with runners on second and third would be a good point to give one a shot. Most likely you are going to pull Robertson after the inning is done anyway, so why not get with it and try to keep it tight and bring someone in to get the last out. Robertson had done his job after getting clobbered in that one inning and got them an out away from the seventh, I just think that is pretty greedy to leave him in and hope for the best against Abreu.

By the same count, what the heck is Torre doing pulling Wang at 93 pitches and sailing with two outs and no one on? It worked out OK, mostly because Leyland let the lead slip and the tension was lessened, but it did not make sense to me. The Tigers need to get Kerosene Farnsworth in the game with a one run lead, that is when things will get fun.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

Long lunch tomorrow

Late rainout ticks off Tigers

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 5 October 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

What was Leyland thinking leaving Robertson in to face Abreu with second and third with two outs in the sixth?

My guess is that the numbers lined up.

Or:

Roberston is a BULLDOG, a GAMER, a MILITARY brat with GREAT COMPOSURE and TENACITY.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 5 October 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

Tigers pissed about the uneven distribution of rain delay information:

"They definitely got information that I didn't have, that our team didn't have," Tigers starter Justin Verlander said. "Half of our team was out there. Not one of their guys was. I don't know what happened."

"At 9:35 they said, '10 o'clock start,' " closer Todd Jones said. "Then Justin goes out there and starts throwing and not one Yankee was out there. They went from we're going at (10) o'clock to six minutes later, the game is canceled. And it hasn't really rained hard out there? Is that what I'm hearing?"

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 5 October 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 5 October 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

It was an errant throw with a purpose. Jeiter, ever the guiding leader, wants to give Sheffield some valuable situational experience at first and figured it would make the most sense to do so early in the game.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 5 October 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

Good thing the Tigers have decided to be selective against a 70%-first-pitch-strike pitcher.

What's the contract status of A-Rod, anyways? Is he stuck in NY for a while? Because it seems like he could use a change of scenery. (I find it telling that the only players the Yanks have left from their '95-'96/'98-'00 championship run are all homegrowns.)

nate p. (natepatrin), Thursday, 5 October 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

the yanquis are paying him less than some of their other players (after the rangers agreed to pick up some of the tab), but he might be too expensive to move and he's got a no trade clause. but if i were him, i'd be outta there when captain clutch is all but playing politics in the press and captain balco is calling him out in public.

Forgot to mention Morgan's defense of normal-motion playback versus slow-motion playback when determining the difference between a check swing and a swing. Miller, baffled: "Oh... I thought slow-motion was the best possible way to determine a check swing." (Just after the slow-motion replay reveals a bat that looks as straight as... a bat) Morgan: "Slow-motion is misleading because it makes the bat look bent and further out than it actually is."

I'm sure there are just as many Met fans who don't like The Gambler as Yankee fans, as the Doc probably remembers well Rogers walking in the winning run sending the Braves to become victim of Jete's fist pump back in the 99 World Series.

It is kind of interesting that both Taco Weaver and Rogers come up with big playoff starts within a day of each other as the Yanks lose two in a row. Wells didn't pitch that bad either for the Padres, but it could have be even better if Kevin Brown could pick up a win tommorrow to complete the busted ex-Yank perfecta. Baseball does have some odd symmetry that shows up some times.

POV - 1984 Tigers

1. Darrell Evans
2. Chet Lemon
3. Howard Johnson (HOJO! Boy letting him go was not a good move.)
4. Rusty Kuntz (Perhaps the most lurid baseball name ever?)
5. Doug Bair (Palmball represent!)

I remember watching Jack Morris pitch a no-hitter that season as it was the Saturday Game of the week on NBC. I remember my Dad saying wouldn't be funny if the Tigers kept it up and win it all, as they had gotten off to such a good start. That club had more utility players than about any World Champ that I can remember. Sparky had platoons going all over the place.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Saturday, 7 October 2006 04:59 (nineteen years ago)

Those Tiger teams were part of Boston's weird rivalry with the Rust Belt in those days; they were usually too much for the Red Sox; very pesky. In basketball it always seemed like the Bucks who gave Boston its biggest headaches.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Saturday, 7 October 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.nypost.com/seven/10072006/sports/yankees/offense_is_not_all_a_rods_fault_yankees_joel_sherman.htm

In today's Post, Joel Sherman writes, "Yet here are the Yankees facing an elimination that would be every bit as embarrassing as blowing a three-games-to-none lead to Boston in the 2004 ALCS."

I don't know if that's the exaggeration of the year or an accurate reflection of the current state of Yankee fan entitlement, but I'm deeply looking forward to what might happen if New York loses. Maybe Steinbrenner invests in an all-cyborg bullpen or something.

govern yourself accordingly (dayan), Saturday, 7 October 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

timmy tannin (pompous), Saturday, 7 October 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

I think most of the chuckleheads (with the very possible exception of Morgan) realize (AT THIS POINT) the Tigers are legit, but I think they're finding it embarrassing that the Yankees aren't doing well with a payroll that is well over double that of their opponents. I'd be pretty pissed if I were a fan as well, but I'd at least be understanding. The Tigers are obviously capable, and they are a lot more hungry.

ARod is batting behind Cano (batting 7th, hitting .091 in the series) and Sheffield (hitting 4th, benched against the Gambler, hitting .125 in the series).

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 8 October 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

Andy_K (Andy_K), Sunday, 8 October 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

OK, this has gone from funny to bewildering/kinda sad.

nate p. (natepatrin), Sunday, 8 October 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, the Yanks need to be crushed under the heel of fate for another ten, twelve years to be kinda sad.
