Damn, two teams I really like facing off in the first round. Even after playing .700 ball for 2/3rds of the season, I'm still hesitant to trust any of Minnesota's non-Santana starters, and Oakland HAS to win a postseason series one of these years, so I'll pick:

Oakland in 4.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 2 October 2006 06:28 (nineteen years ago)

The first three games in the Oakland-Minnesota division series are day games. The A's were an AL-best 40-21 in day games and the Twins were 27-20. "We're used to playing during the day -- we have the second-most day games in baseball," Macha said. "I don't think it's going to matter." ...

Will it? Probably not for the INDOOR games ...

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 2 October 2006 06:38 (nineteen years ago)

Won't be much to say about this one on the East Coast, since we'll all be at work for the first 3 games.

A's in 4

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 October 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

ELEPHANTS IN FOUR. Because, you know, Santana. Twins hitting will go pffft. A's hitting will go wheeeee. I will stop being glib. Series MVP = Eric Chavez (OH YEAH).

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 October 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

Oh man but what if they start the Twins-A's game at like 5 and then people watch its final innings instead of the Yankees? I can't go for that (no can do)

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

Time of day has just as much to do with this as natural daylight, I think.

Wow, two runs already.

MARCO SCUTARO HAVE MY BABIES!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

I dint know Alex was so easy...

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

S'true. Barry looks good so far although baserunning blundering always helps.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

I really don't like where this is headed.

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

Barry looks like shit... like 50% pitches thrown for strikes. The Twins have no patience and are swinging at first pitch balls. That's not how you "get" to Zito.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

And the Twinkies gave him an out! After 4 Zito is right @ 50% (46 pitches, 23 strikes).

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

Rondelle breaks up the no-no.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

Castillo seems to be the only batter that really has his shit together. Bartlett and Punto getting outs on the first pitch they see is nauseating.

Boo hoo.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

"Santana" = Spanish for "Houdini"

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

"Rondell" = English for "fuck yes"

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

Ron-DL comes through.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

Keith Law: Rondell White "can't hit a lick"
Rondell White: Lick these, chump

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

so the Twins are swinging like the Tigers!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

that was a jeterific catch holy shit

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

ESPN Radio here... say Zito "losing zip"

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Bartlett just remembered he spent most of the year hitting .330

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Bring a dude in already, Macha. Don't Grady this.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Last time Mauer went 0-3: 9/3

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

Shit, never mind

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

Morneau 2-run walkoff pls

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

Bartlett is either nervous or braindead because he almost ran them out of the inning twice.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

Great unsolved mysteries of our times:

1) D.B. Cooper
2) The Zodiac Killer
3) Twins not intentionally walking Frank Thomas to get to Eric Chavez

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

HURT

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

Aaaaaaaaaand fuck.

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

Thomas goes long again!

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, how do you not walk him.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

They're gonna do it now!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

crain has the worst facial hair ever. good for frank.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

Gardenhire is going to blow this series with his bullpen just like he did against the Yanks in 2004 ... why isn't Nathan pitching? What are you saving your closer for when it's the ninth inning and you're at home, PARTICULARLY when the opposition's best hitter is coming up?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

That ball Chavez just hit would have been GIDP; way to go Tardenhire

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

big hurt = awesome

gear (gear), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

Nate, do not fall prey to the Fallacy of the Inevitable Grounder. The entire situation would've been different.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

IT WAS ERIC CHAVEZ! C'mon!

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

But Macha would've pinch-run w/ Melhuse! speeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

But, yeah, put in yr damn closer, Gardy.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

Now I remember what there is to hate about the Twins: that Mickey Mouse ballpark.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

did it hit the cieling?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

FUCK

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

That was only 2.5 hours, wasn't it?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

More like 15 hours

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

OF lost it in roof, yes?

Can you imagine if Zito has the equivalent of a Beltran '04 October? $ KA-CHING $

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

Watched the last two innings at a pizza joint. Frank is fearsome. Don't get not using Nathan. That be stupid.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

"Can you imagine if Zito has the equivalent of a Beltran '04 October? $ KA-CHING $"

Scott Boras is a happy man.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

Why is someone in SF cheering for the A's?

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

I always have. I was raised to hate the Giants (although I mellowed over the years.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

Oakland is probably closer to SF than St. Paul is to Minneapolis.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

The Lake St. Bridge is less than 1,500 feet, so no.

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are probably closer to Los Angeles (just plain old Los Angeles) than St. Paul is to Minneapolis.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

The thing is that the Twin Cities only have one baseball team. If St. Paul had the Saints and I rooted for the Minneapolis Millers then I'd expect people to WTF at me, too.

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

My dad was born and raised in the Bronx and he rooted for the Dodgers aka there is no rhyme or reason to this shit.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

(Also, Anaheim and L.A. are like 27 miles apart, M/SP are 10 capitol to capitol; get one Mapquest)

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

I will concede the local-loyalty argument but if someone displays any sort of ignorance towards the geographic makeup of the Twin Cities then we are mortal enemies forever

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

Oakland/SF is like White Sox/Cubs. It's as much a class thing as it is a geography thing.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

Well, yeah, that makes a lot more sense now; I was too angry at various Alex hooraying to think of a better comeback.

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

I predicted Twins, but am rooting for A's*, so, uh, yay team!

(*Mainly because I finally read Moneyball last week.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

New Twins motto is "Don't Let Frank Thomas Beat Us" which seems sensible.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

Was Thomas always a Twins-killer?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

Thomas was always an everyone killer.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

Thomas' splits show that his numbers vs Minnesota are basically in line with his career numbers.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

His metrodome splits are about 15% below career avg though... interesting.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

Get the idea that Frank is a little locked in, don't you?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

No if only Chavez can stop looking quite so feeble.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

Chavez is gonna get a new arm as soon as the seasons over. Have they officially diagnosed him yet?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

Between innings, Bradley accidentally spilled a pot of coffee on Loaiza and the latter had to quickly change into a clean uniform + find a new glove. It looks like he's still locked in though.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

So how over-analyzed was the coffee incident? The A's board makes it seem as though the ESPN folx wouldn't shut up about it, but they are over-sensitive types.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

If it makes Nate feel any better, I feel only marginally more comfortable now than I did before the series began. The A's have been here before recently and I didn't like how that ended.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, I had a "work meeting" too, but I made sure there was a TV in sight.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

did they ever take the first 2 on the road tho?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

That would shock me. He's still cheaper and better than any other option. But maybe.

Bold clam: Johan will be a Giant. In 2017.

I was at the game and was sitting in the best seat of my life (right behind home plate, third row), so I got a real good view of what misery looks like.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

Where do you see that? I still see that his status will be reviewed tomorrow.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 22:58 (nineteen years ago)

he was out 30 days earlier this season with a broken thumb.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

I still don't see where it sez he's out for the series. Is that just de riguer for these kinds of breaks though?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 5 October 2006 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

Forget Joe Nathan and Francisco Liriano, even Boof Bonser's performance this year is enough to turn Giants fans' stomachs.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 5 October 2006 04:05 (nineteen years ago)

I know I shouldn't write this series off as an automatic Twins loss, except that somewhere between yesterday and a comeback Game 5 victory lies Carlos Silva.

Dear Frank Thomas: please to be murdering the Yankees.

nate p. (natepatrin), Thursday, 5 October 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

The thought of a Santana/Liriano/Bonser rotation = way scary, though. The Tigers and ChiSox should pray that Morneau and Mauer had fluke years and Garza doesn't get his shit together.

Athletics' Ellis out for rest of postseason with broken finger

By JOSH DUBOW, AP Sports Writer
October 5, 2006

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Oakland Athletics second baseman Mark Ellis will miss the rest of the postseason after breaking his right index finger when he swung at a pitch and it hit his hand.

"I'm crushed," Ellis said. "You play the whole season to get to this point and now I can't play because of this. ... I'll be the best cheerleader we have."

The injury is a costly one for the A's, who lead Minnesota 2-0 in their first-round series but must try to close it out without their top three middle infielders.

Shortstop Bobby Crosby, the 2004 AL Rookie of the Year, is sidelined with a back injury, and backup Antonio Perez underwent surgery Thursday on his broken finger. D'Angelo Jimenez will start in Ellis' place Friday in Game 3.

Manager Ken Macha said injuries are part of the game but acknowledged Ellis will be missed for both his bat and glove.

He's "one of the top defenders in the American League at second base," Macha said Thursday. "You know when balls are hit there, the guy's out. He gets the big hit every once in a while."

Ellis made only two errors in 632 regular-season chances, breaking Bret Boone's record for best fielding percentage by a second baseman. Ellis' .99684 percentage narrowly edged the mark of .99671 set by Boone for Cincinnati in 1997.

Ellis went 2-for-4 with two singles in Game 2, injuring himself in the ninth inning swinging at a pitch from Joe Nathan. Ellis waved his hand and appeared to be in pain while trainers looked him over.

He finished the at-bat by striking out looking, and was replaced by D'Angelo Jimenez at second base in the bottom of the ninth.

The bone was broken in three places and will take three-to-six weeks to heal. Trainer Larry Davis said Ellis would be unable to even pinch run the rest of this series.

The A's can replace Ellis on the roster if they advance to the next round, with Mark Kiger and Kevin Melillo the most likely options.

Jimenez, picked up by Oakland in June after being released by Texas, played in just eight games for the A's, going 1-for-14. He batted .183 for the season with one homer and eight RBIs in 71 at-bats and made four errors in 18 games at second base.

He has played parts of seven seasons in the majors, with his best season coming in 2004 when he hit .270 with 12 homers and 67 RBIs for Cincinnati.

"It's not like I've never been there before," Jimenez said. "It will be the same game. I will just go out there and do my best."

Ellis batted .249 with 11 homers and 52 RBIs this season, but finished strong. He hit .308 with six homers and 26 RBIs in his final 49 games.

Oakland has dealt with numerous injuries this season, overcoming DL stints by Frank Thomas, Milton Bradley, Rich Harden, Huston Street, Esteban Loaiza, Joe Kennedy, Ellis and Crosby to win the AL West.

"That's the good thing about this team: We're a good bench," said shortstop Marco Scutaro, who has filled in well for Crosby. "People get hurt and there's always the bench. No matter who's playing second, I have to throw the ball and make double plays. Communication will probably be good. He speaks Spanish and I do, too. D'Angelo's been in this game for a long time. I don't think it's going to be different."

Crosby missed the final 52 games of the regular season with a back injury. He said Thursday that he's not getting any better and doubts he'd be able to play if the A's advance past the first round.

"He has not done any baseball activity," Macha said. "It'll be very difficult for him to get back and play."

Top of the first: runners on 1st and 2nd; one out; nobody scores
Top of the 2nd: leadoff Morneau double; advances to 3rd with one out; nobody scores

Are the Twins 8 years old and playing "don't touch the plate, that's the lava zone"?

Oh goody, we didn't strand anybody in scoring position this inning

nate p. (natepatrin), Friday, 6 October 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

OK, y'know when Willie Mays was stumbling around feebly in the outfield for the '73 Mets during their postseason? Radke's all "oh yeah, you want to go out on a bad note? Top this." This is just brutal. Brutal and sad.

Wow, Torii Hunter is like the 3M of costing us potential leads.

nathan hasn't pitched in the playoffs since he blew sf's chances in 2003. I wonder if that will change.

Hmmm, only two other teams have ever completed a sweep in the postseason without ever trailing in the series: 2004 Red Sox (vs Cards) and 2005 Cards (vs Padres).

nate p. (natepatrin), Friday, 6 October 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

He pitched in 2004 against the Yankees too. Gardy tried to get three innings out of him in Game 2 and blew the series in the process!
