Some may call this the real World Series.

Are you trying to tell us that the Go-Go Yankees can't come back from an 8-1 deficit in the eighth inning?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 October 2006 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

Let's see what Jeter does here.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 October 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

I love that nearly all of those ESPN "experts" predicted the Twins and Yankees to win the whole thing and they are gone now. I'm just going to enjoy this series, no matter who wins.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 7 October 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

Anything beyond what just happened is gravy to me.

I have a shitload of respect for the A's (and I have loved Frank Thomas since Auburn), but it would be even more exciting to face the Twins.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Saturday, 7 October 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

Game one: Robertson vs Zito, most likely

Any scenario that doesn't involve the Red Sox, White Sox, Angels, or Yankees in the ALCS is wonderful.

this seriously is so awesome.

Agreed all. My first postseason as a baseball fan, and I think the Tigers have won my heart. With this last game and that fucking celebration alone.

regular roundups (Dave M), Sunday, 8 October 2006 07:35 (nineteen years ago)

Now that the Yankees are out, we are guaranteed a seventh straight year with no repeat champions during those years (Yanks-DBacks-Angels-Marlins-BoSox-ChiSox-?). The record is ten straight years, from 1978-1987.

Potentially the most fun, least watched series ever?

I think both teams should go to a player's house each night and get completely trashed.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Sunday, 8 October 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

Stark, Crasnick, Neyer, Caple, Kurkjian, Neel, Law, Schwarz, Gomez, Karabell, Rojas, Rogers, Shea, McAdam: the ESPN experts who were 0-2 with their ALDS predictions. The other five: 1-1, obviously, since no one picked the Tigers over the Yankees.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Sunday, 8 October 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

Tigers in 6. (I have a bad feeling i might be wrong about this tho)

i'm with ya poly-p. all the padres need a 2 game win streak followed by winning 4 out of 7... while unlikely, stranger things have happened!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 9 October 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

Are the A's gonna open up the top of the Coliseum?

If yes, A's in 5.
If no, A's in 5.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

The consensus, then, is that the Tigers done shot their load. Amirite?

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

The consensus is we'd like to shut up the caveman Beane Haters with a pennant.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

YES.

The Bearnaise-Stain Bears (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

Are the A's gonna open up the top of the Coliseum?

Because of revenue-sharing, all seating capacity during the regular season must be consistent with the postseason.

I don't think the A's ever sold out a playoff game prior to this year for a very long time (ever?).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

That can't be true. Before Mount Davis opened the A's sold out plenty of games.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

Esp. 89-92. A's were #2 or 3 in AL attendance.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

Since then I don't know, but it wouldn't shock me if you are correct. Mount Davis plus the strike plus the A's sucking for 7 or 8 years plus the Giants getting a nice pretty ballpark and getting good put a definite dent in their attendance.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

The consensus is we'd like to shut up the caveman Beane Haters with a pennant.

rooting for the tigers /= being a "caveman Beane Hater"

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

I will root for the Tigers next year. This year I want an Oakland win.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

A's in 7.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

no, of course not stenc, but it's the most irritating bunch rooting vs Oakland, and it'd be fun to shut em up.

(one of whom Jon Heyman, left Newsday for SI, and against all odds Newsday found an even bigger idiot, Wallace Matthews. They're both dumber than ILX "populists.")

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

so don't read newsday, problem solved.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

I like the way the Tigers' batting practice hats have either white or orange beneath the brim. Therefore: Tigers in six.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

Heck, if it's a revenue issue I'd say just take off the tarp and let people sit up there for free!

Reminds me of a late-starting Philly double-header back in 1993, they said attendance doubled after the bars closed at 2am.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

Don't get me wrong Andy, I have much love for Leyland and the Tigers... especially after the first round!

I just think the A's (even with their middle infield woes) have the advantage. I had the A's in the World Series at the beginning of the season, and they've done better than I thought so far.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

I assumed everyone had been making predictions, not wishes -- so when Dr. M made the crack about the anti-Beanes (I'm 100% pro-Beane), I decided to be even sillier. But don't mind me: I've rooted for/against specific teams for pettier reasons.

Whenever I try to figure out who SHOULD win this series, my head begins to hurt. I suppose I might say Tigers in six if I were forced to make some kind of bet. I expect the A's to be steady the whole time. It depends on whether or not the Tigers have anything left, whether or not Leyland keeps the the Tigers from playing on their heels, and about 100 other things.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

The A's have the Secret Sauce (power pitching, defense, relief ace).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

That's not very Secret.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

To be honest the Tigers have all those things too, but unfortunately they have decided to use their relief ace in the 7th and 8th innings.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

As nate p discovered during the Yankees-Tigers thread, Zumaya went something like 1-5 in save opportunities, though I can't recall if he had been left in too long in those cases.

That said, Jones has never not put me on edge.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

jelkino (jergins), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 01:55 (nineteen years ago)

This team reminds of last year's CWS... An out of nowhere darkhorse just completely dominating until a tailspin at the end of August and then barely holding on to make the playoffs.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 05:16 (nineteen years ago)

Athlete Inge with some "significant" RBIs.

All these excellent teams keep finding ways to collapse when playing the Tigers. It's a very peculiar phenomenon.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 06:11 (nineteen years ago)

It's probably for the better that it wasn't possible to relay at least 20 things said by the team of Lyons, Brenneman, and Pinella.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 06:19 (nineteen years ago)

"Zito spent the night like many residents of nearby Berkeley -- high and outside."

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 06:26 (nineteen years ago)

They pulled three of the tarps off the upper deck (the "Oakland" part), though it looked like it was sparsely populated. Maybe they stuck the extra press up there ...

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I am obsessed with the tarps.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

TONIGHT: NEIFI AT SHORT, GUILLEN REMAINING AT FIRST, LEYLAND APPARENTLY DOES NOT REGRET LEAVING SHELTON OFF ROSTER.

WTF.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

Let's see if the Tigs can change their free-swinging stripes for more than one night. Why haven't they tried it before?

I learned before I muted the sound that SEAN CASEY IS CLUTCH NO MATTER WHAT THE STATS SAY!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

He's one of the best guys around apparently. I mean a real class act. Really really a great guy. Great teammate. He's nice to puppies, goes to church on Sundays, and he's doesn't watch scat porn, despite what it says on his MLB bio.

Let's see if the Tigs can change their free-swinging stripes for more than one night. Why haven't they tried it before?

Whenever this plan backfires, they strike out even more than usual.

I think their decision to try this again last night was based almost completely on watching Zito's performance against the Twins.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

Hey did anyone else know they call Sean Casey "The Mayor" because he's so popular?

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

Just like Mayors EVERYWHERE are!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Hey did you know they call Alex Rodriguez "That Dirty Pig Fucking Son Of A Bitch" because he once scuffed Derek Jeter's shoe in the dugout in the 8th inning of a game that the Yankees won 7-4, but which A-Rod was 1-3 with a walk and a bloop single to right field in.

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

do you guys know they call jeter 'captain hero' because one time he booted a ground ball into left field but chased after it and threw it in the general direction of second base, which prevented the hitter from advancing from first?

gear (gear), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

I hate engaging in Game 1 = lost **OH NOES** overreactions, but I think the A's really needed the win last night. They were playing at home, with their best pitcher on the mound, and 50% of their rotation is dicey. Not to mention that the rabid fandom at Comerica Park is turning out to be one hell of a home field advantage for the Tigers.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

According to Steve Phillips, the A's must make Verlander throw the ball over the plate (and some other stuff).

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

I love it. No matter where he plays or how badly he hits, Neifi bats second.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

NEIFI IS BATTING SECOND!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

I have a weird feeling about this game.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

That's just perverse! I wonder if Leyland's just doing it to piss off the stathead contingent.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 12 October 2006 00:33 (nineteen years ago)

Verlander's seriously fatigued, really gutting it out at this point.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 12 October 2006 00:36 (nineteen years ago)

He's labouring -- he really struggled with his control in that last inning but seemed to come up with an unhittable 98 MPH pitch when he needed it.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 12 October 2006 00:44 (nineteen years ago)

Figures he gives up a walk on four very close pitches.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 12 October 2006 00:54 (nineteen years ago)

Nice.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 12 October 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

Hang on a second, Verlander is handing out three-ball counts like free candy, he's obviously tired, he's thrown 90+ pitches through less than five innings, there are two runners on, and the bullpen can't bail him out before the inning is over. You're Frank Thomas. What do you do?

a) chase the first pitch
b) ...
c) ...

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

But really there is no excuse. The Tiger's have played better and the teams are pretty even on paper. A's fans can accept losing when it isn't based completely around a bone-headed defensive play or baserunning error.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

Is he hurt so bad he can't even sit on the bench? Or did they send him back to Detroit for treatment?

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

Alex makes sense.

Although I have noticed that Eric Chavez has made three uncharacteristic misplays this series... all of which Detroit has capitalized on*... not sure if his bat (which has woken up strangely enough) means enough to make up for the gaffes.

I think A's fans would like the Eric Chavez that can hit AND field to show up, esp. this time of the year.

*Is there a defensive "clutch" stat? Like close/late/RISP etc.?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

not sure if his bat (which has woken up strangely enough) means enough to make up for the gaffes.

not if no one can get on base before him. tho granted for his solo shot last night, he had the first ab of the inning.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

Thomas is 0-fer the series so far, ya? That's a pretty big deal, too.

I didn't see him in the dugout.

I saw Chris Shelton several times, though.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 12 October 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

Chavez's missed ball at third that dribbled into the outfield was horrendous, it's like he forgot he was playing baseball at the exact .0035 of a second that he needed to absolutely focus.

I only watched through the fifth last night and I thought it was a great game. A's fans were truly going nuts in the early innings.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 12 October 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

No team that has lost the first two games of the ALCS at home has rallied to win the series.

:-\

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 12 October 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

That's the stupidest factoid ever though. It's happened in the World Series a couple of times. It's far from impossible.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 12 October 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Because it's never happened in the ALCS though, well fuck it the A's should just give up now.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 12 October 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

you don't know what the ":-\" emoticon means i take it?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 12 October 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

Haha I didn't look closely at the emoticon. It mean "ho hum", right?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 12 October 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

actually i don't know what it means exactly either but ho-hum seems about right.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 12 October 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

I suspect the ratings of the ALCS also might be terrible nationally? esp at 2-0?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 12 October 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

This means Gomez should remain in the lineup, being a 5:00 hitter and all.

Christina Kahrl on Leyland, Macha and luck:

Happy circumstance rewarded Jim Leyland's willingness to take a risk with Gomez, but the reason why it paid off was his willingness to take his cue from Casey Stengel, and look something up. Although first baseman Sean Casey isn't really a legitimate lefty power source that was the role he was expected to help fill in the lineup. With Casey out, perhaps for the remainder of the series, Leyland wanted some lefty sock to exploit Loaiza's platoon problems, and decided that he'd be better off playing the percentages than putting regular DH Marcus Thames in. Thames bats righty and was 0–5 against Loaiza on his career — not enough to say Loaiza owned him, but also nothing to discourage the veteran skipper from taking a chance and trying to add some lefty sock to a lineup that suddenly without Casey.

... Tigers' Game 4 starter Jeremy Bonderman has allowed lefties to hit .284/.350/.472, while holding righties to .235/.275/.341 — will Macha continue to concede massive platoon disadvantages, or will he take a risk? At this point, he has little left to lose that isn't already slipping through his fingers.

He hit a soft grounder down the third base line that looked like it might be foul, so he jogged the whole time while watching and was thrown out. You know, Magglio, if you run full speed and aren't able to see what happens to the ball, someone will eventually let you know if it wound up foul or fair. Being the last person to know is not always a bad thing.

Then I forget about him until he's picked up by a better team in July.

FRANK THOMAS: JACKASS

Kenny Rogers had great control in Friday's game, but when he faced Oakland slugger Frank Thomas in the first inning, he hit him in the thigh with a pitch. The count was no balls and two strikes.

Thomas, who has yet to get a hit in the series, told reporters he believes Rogers did it on purpose.

Rogers disagreed. He said if were going to hit Thomas, he would have done it when the count was 0-and-0, not 0-and-2.

"I tried to throw it as hard as I could, which isn't that hard, but I was making sure I got it in," Rogers said. "I overcooked it in there, but I never would try to hit him.

"I surely am not going to hit anybody 0-2, because I'm not putting anybody on base if I have to. I'm sorry he feels that way, but it's not going to be the last one I miss inside. But it's because he's a good hitter, and if you miss over the plate he can hurt you as much as any player in the game."

When Bradley sought out Leyland after the home run, you could tell he was thinking, "WILL YOU BE OUR DADDY?"

Swisher's comments (barely contained excitement) were funny. "Macha's a nice guy. I'm just a ballplayer, so, you know... I just play."

Thought this was an interesting quote from Scott Boras:

"In Detroit, because American players have such a negative view of the city, my advice to Mike Ilitch was, 'Build your core around Latin players who don't have that view,' " Boras said. "They don't look at Detroit as a negative. They like the ballpark and the suburbs."

"I'm a human being. Just treat me like one, OK? My son gets on the Internet, he's 25 years old, he's reading all this stuff, he's looking at what happened and he calls up my wife and says, 'Do you think Daddy's going to be able to learn from this?' How's that for shock factor?"
--former Oakland Athletics manager Ken Macha, fired after signing a three-year contract with the A's last winter.
