J.P. Ricciardi didn't say he'll trade Roy Halladay. He also didn't say he wouldn't.In fact, as the Blue Jays' general manager looked ahead to the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline, what he said Sunday was, "We have to be open to anything." Anything means anybody. And anybody means a certain All-Star right-hander who might just be the best starting pitcher in baseball. And while that doesn't mean Ricciardi is ready to sell Halladay off to the highest bidder, it sure does sound like he's willing to listen."We have to see what makes us better," he said. "Obviously, if people have interest in Roy Halladay, they'd better realize there's a steep price that's going to come with it."
He also didn't say he wouldn't.

fuck all sox fans for their inevitable fixation on halladay while the thing that is going to cost the team a playoff spot is an overachieving util guy at ss and a guy whose aaa stint resulted in a fabulous 182/273/295 at first.

The Rockies blog I post on has several serious discussions about what the team should give up to get hometwon boy Halladay. Am I being harsh when I tell them I think there's zero chance of this happening no matter who we trade?

Red Sox look to be in pretty good shape to me. Not sure where this costing them a playoff spot stuff is coming from.

it would be sad to see him pitch in that stadium tho
personally i think the giants should trade 8 players for him and try and win 3 of every 5 games 2-1 - if they made the playoffs they would win the world series

any phillie phanatics want to tell me who they have that they would trade for doc?
alex, the sox need infield help imo. lowrie should be back kind of soon but i'm not bullish on his 2009 potential, and lowell is a serious concern both because of his injury and how he was playing before it.

Since coming off the DL in early June, Church's line is .290/.336/.402 ... far from good for a corner outfielder, but decent enough compared to most of the Mets' other outfielders ... and of course a far sight prettier than Francoeur's .250/.282/.352 line for the season.

the Jays countered the Angels offer by asking for a four player package that included Joe Saunders, Brandon Wood, Erick Aybar, and one prospect from the group of Trevor Reckling, Peter Bourjos, and Sean O'Sullivan.
If I'm running the Angels, I'd do this deal.

Top club officials from both teams strongly denied a FOXSports.com report saying that the teams were in serious discussions about a blockbuster that would send left-hander Cliff Lee and catcher Victor Martinez to Los Angeles for first baseman James Loney, one of the Dodgers' young rotation members and prospects.

personally i think they should unload him - at this point i'm sure most of the fanbase has made peace with it and they really should get something for him because they likely aren't going to make the playoffs and then he's gone

i agree w/u completely that philly is completely retarded if they dont make this happen btw
if they got halladay with that lineup they would honestly mow down every team including the dodgers imo who secretly can't score runs - like this weekend they absolutely murdered the cardinals in 2 out of 3 games and the cards probably have the second or third best lineup in the majors at this point (granted they saw the back end of the cards rotation but even still that lineup is just insane)
― meme-first attitude (J0rdan S.), Monday, 27 July 2009 04:59 (sixteen years ago)
i still have to think philly is gonna do it. jays wanted happ, drabek, brown, philly countered w/happ plus a couple random dudes. plenty of room in the middle there.

If they're just going to play Martinez at 1b, he doesn't seem like that big of an upgrade on Loney.
Also, Cliff Lee is great and everything, but what makes him more tested than Billingsley or Kershaw? He has no playoff experience.

it seems like a zero-sum deal strictly based on talent, except the dodgers would be giving away players with a potentially high ceiling in favor of guys who may have already peaked.

However, the $8.1-million option for next season that triggers if Sanchez reaches 600 plate appearances this season remains a stumbling block for many teams. It is one of the reasons why San Francisco has backed off, particularly after acquiring first baseman/outfielder Ryan Garko from Cleveland in a trade on Monday night.Multiple executives say they believe the Pirates have little chance of getting much in return for Sanchez without being willing [to pay] part of the option.

1:57pm: Yahoo's Gordon Edes reports that the Red Sox offered "at least" Clay Buchholz, Michael Bowden and Ryan Westmoreland to the Blue Jays for Halladay. In my opinion, that is a very strong offer. Edes says the Jays would like to acquire a shortstop since they are "vigorously shopping" Marco Scutaro. That means the Sox might need to get creative.
Edes says Daniel Bard and Casey Kelly "have been declared off-limits by the Red Sox." And while the Dodgers deem Clayton Kershaw untouchable, they've at least discussed internally the possibility of moving Chad Billingsley. Billingsley might be the best name we've heard yet in connection with Halladay, though remember that Edes labeled that an internal discussion.

Sure I get they've been in a brief funk for the last week or two, but beating the crap out of the A's and the O's for the next six games'll cure that I'm sure. The chances of them not getting at least the wild card seem pretty slim to me.
― He was only 21 years old when he 16 (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)
it's tough. the two other best teams in the league (and probably baseball) are in their division. it'll be real hard to separate considerably from either one but maybe a good transaction plus some luck will do it.
beating up on the a's and o's is nice but won't mean a gd thing when the rest of the yanks and rays games come up.

the Giants are in third place in a shitty NL division...
BUT
i can see Sabean thinking getting into a best of 3/best of 5 with a healthy Lince, Cain, RJ/Zito and their surprising defense, they could pull off a 2002 Angels, 2005 White Sox or 2006 Cardinals underdog out of nowhere playoff run.
but still, Sabean is in the bottom 3 tier of GMs and I wouldn't expect him to do more good than harm to the Giants.

just fyi:
bowden is a future 3rd starter at best. "jeff suppan" is the name that comes up the most as his ceiling.
westmoreland is a toolsy rhode island kid who was going to vandy unless the sox picked him. i believe he would have to be a ptbnl in any deal. seems kinda shitty that they would trade him anyway.
bard if you haven't seen him yet is a real treat. since he's a reliever it's hard to call him untouchable but he's currently shredding the major leagues and i don't think there's much of a future with papelbon.
buccholz is an enigma at this point and i would trade him in the right deal.
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 23:34 (sixteen years ago)
Bowden throws a bit harder than Suppan doesn't he? Also has four or so good pitches IIRC. His AAA #s this year are just meh, but he'd been pretty good prior to that. Plus he's still only 22.
― He was only 21 years old when he 16 (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 23:43 (sixteen years ago)
well suppan probably threw 92-93 when he was 22 as well. bowden also has a curve and change, tho soxprospects says he's working on a slider fwiw. he has v. good control and a weird delivery which also factor in to his success.
most of his rep. is built on an insane run he put together in double-a as like a 20 year old. to me his current aaa numbers (with the low-ish k rate) are more realistic. which means his ceiling is probably a #3--i don't think he's ever going to overpower dudes in the majors. no shame at all in that, but i think he's tradeable.

i don't think that really matters. i mean, assuming this hypothetical team doesn't score 6 or 7 runs in 5 innings off of lee/utley, the phils lineup should keep them in every game regardless. also lee is pretty good against righties and hamels was pretty dope in the playoffs last year so you can just hope that your lefties are better than their righties. also they have joe blanton who was basically dominant for the whole month of july including the cardinals very right handed stacked lineup.

So is Ricciardi like one of those people on Facebook who updates with something vague like "Yep I'm gonna do it... but it might not go so well :(" just so 20 people can comment with "Oh, no, what's wrong?" and "Well I hope ur OK dude," only to not respond for a couple days and then finally comment with "n/m"?

a starting lineup that never finished over (or particularly near) .500.
a couple of them i'd like to have back based on performance. many were good team guys. but as ugly as it seems, the club's management seems to have much more of a clue today than when it was signing derek bell and jeromy burnitz, or trading for matt morris.

not really up to speed on the Dodgers bullpen situation. how badly did they need another closer?!
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 30 July 2009 20:25 (sixteen years ago)
They didn't. Their bullpen is one of the best in MLB. They have had some injuries due to Torre turning Ronald Bellisario into Scott Proctor but hes coming back this month. We have quite a few guys with sub 3.00 ERAs and plenty of arms in the minors to step in if need be. Ned is just a GM who feels like he has to make moves for the sake of making moves. Like trading for uh, Scott Proctor two years ago.
― mayor jingleberries, Thursday, 30 July 2009 20:28 (sixteen years ago)
I'll bet you some old scout was sitting in the corner of some room and then Coletti mentioned Sherrill's name and then then that old scout just jumped up and said "I know that guy" and then they got him cuz Ned trusts old guys who jump up because they have instinct and grit.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—Craving help for their starting rotation, the Minnesota Twins have turned to Carl Pavano.
The Twins agreed Friday to send the Cleveland Indians a player to be identified later in exchange for Pavano, a one-time All-Star whose career derailed in New York during four injury-ruined seasons with the Yankees.
“He’s certainly had a significant injury history over the last few years, but he has been healthy this year,” Minnesota general manager Bill Smith said from Detroit, where the Twins were scheduled to play the first-place Tigers later Friday. “We’ve had good reports about him on and off the field, and we’re hoping that he can provide some innings for us down the stretch.”
The Twins began the day in third place in the AL Central, 4 1/2 games behind the Tigers.
Francisco Liriano’s starting spot has been in question after another poor performance on Wednesday that led to his 11th loss, tied for the most in the league. Pavano, given Torii Hunter’s old number 48, was expected to join the team in Detroit. With an off day on Monday, the rotation for next week was not yet set.
Whenever he pitches, the 33-year-old Pavano will take the mound still trying to erase the embarrassment of those four infamously bad years in New York.
After an All-Star, 18-win season for Florida in 2004, the right-hander signed a four-year contract worth almost $40 million with the Yankees.
He won nine games during the entire length of that deal, making only 26 starts. Ridiculed often in city tabloids and by the franchise’s proud fans, Pavano drew the ire of Yankees teammates, too. They questioned his desire and work ethic during his time on the disabled list, and he even picked up the derogatory nickname “American Idle.”
Pavano mostly dealt with shoulder, back and elbow problems, but after signing an incentive-laden one-year contract with Cleveland he has at least gotten his durability back. He has gone 9-8 with a 5.37 ERA in 21 starts for the Indians, giving up 150 hits and 23 walks with 88 strikeouts in 125-plus innings.
A handful of rough starts stand out on his game log, but in his most recent outing for Cleveland last Sunday he gave up just one run in eight innings to beat the Tigers. Pavano has pitched six or more innings in two-thirds of his appearances, and he hasn’t thrown this many innings since 2004.
“It’s kind of uncharted territory for him, but we’ll see how it plays out,” Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony said. “It’s no mystery that our starters have struggled. We think this is an opportunity to add a guy who can hopefully help us out.”
The Indians placed Pavano on waivers earlier in the week and the Twins claimed him. To make room for Pavano, knuckleballer R.A. Dickey was optioned to Triple-A. Also, pitcher Boof Bonser was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Dickey did well in his long relief role until July. His ERA has soared from 2.36 to 4.62 over the last five weeks.

Pavano has pitched extremely well against the Tigers (not terribly difficult, obv) and has done quite well against the White Sox, too.

The San Francisco Giants have been looking for outfield help all season, and just 20 months ago, they mulled a possible swap of eventual Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum for Rios.

Giambi is injecting himself with roast beef drippings, for example.
― Alex in SF, Monday, 24 August 2009 14:46 (sixteen years ago)
so he's going to be a "clutch" bat off the bench or something?
― the moreno you knowshon (omar little), Monday, 24 August 2009 18:17 (sixteen years ago)
I would assume he'll be a lefty pinch hitter since the only position he could conceivably play is occupied by the best player in baseball.

It's been suggested Giambi's primary role is to help Colorado Springs win their (AAA) league.
― Mark C, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 16:53 (sixteen years ago)
what has a giambi ever won tho?

― call all destroyer, Friday, 28 August 2009 22:41 (sixteen years ago)
Wow Angels better have a plan for fixing Kazmir cuz he looks to me like he's toast.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:32 (sixteen years ago)
yeah--i can kind of appreciate it cause it's an aggressive, proactive move, but i would not be psyched about my team picking up this particular guy.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:35 (sixteen years ago)
Even if all the Rays get are parts at least they don't have to pay a guy who looks like he either won't stay off the DL or keep his ERA below 5 $20M for the next three years.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:36 (sixteen years ago)
yeah my sense is that they must have really, really wanted that 20 mil for other things.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:38 (sixteen years ago)
Maybe signing their draft picks next year, heh.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:40 (sixteen years ago)
i wonder if they're trying to make a play to keep crawford actually.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:41 (sixteen years ago)
They've also got a lot of guys coming up for arbitration this year, I think.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:45 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i think you're right.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:47 (sixteen years ago)

― Indiana Morbs and the Curse of the Ivy League Chorister (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 29 August 2009 15:08 (sixteen years ago)
They look okay (3/4 starter material.) I'm not sure you want to bet $20M he's going to be doing that next year or the year after if you are the Rays though.
― Alex in SF, Saturday, 29 August 2009 20:18 (sixteen years ago)
wade davis and jeremy hellickson can probably do much of that for a lot less $
nice move imo
― mookieproof, Saturday, 29 August 2009 22:42 (sixteen years ago)
"i wonder if they're trying to make a play to keep crawford actually."
Apparently Crawford has a $10M option for next year so yeah it looks like they will.

Jon Garland also to the dodgers.
wtf is thome gonna play in LA??? sounds like a cockblock.

Contreras to the Rockies...
some desperate chess moves in the NL West...
― *⁂((✪⥎✪))⁂* (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 06:19 (sixteen years ago)
Seems like Thome is only going to be a lefty power bat off the bench. Also looking to see Doyers go to a 6 man pitching staff in September because they can.
― mayor jingleberries, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 07:35 (sixteen years ago)
loney kinda sucks so it's too bad thome is a defensive liability
― the moreno you knowshon (omar little), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 15:32 (sixteen years ago)
i guess they didn't spend much of anything to get him (justin fuller, a 26 year old infielder in high-a) but thome is quite a luxury, and a roster versatility-destroying one at that.
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)
only thing i can imagine is they're thinking of the world series and putting him in at DH
― the moreno you knowshon (omar little), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 15:42 (sixteen years ago)
it must be pretty odd for a dude to go from being the best hitter on his team to the bench in the light hitting NL West.
― *⁂((✪⥎✪))⁂* (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 15:47 (sixteen years ago)
i'm not a stat person so don't bite my head off, but dude is has like the sixth-best batting average on the white sox:

Yes, but he is a power hitter who also draws a lot of walks. He's quite valuable.

he supposedly even called Coletti yesterday and said he couldn't play first
― jair (jergins), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 17:15 (sixteen years ago)
Supposedly the Dodgers gave up Tony Abreu for Garland because the DBacks picked up most of his salary. Not too sad to see him go. Also management has hated his (injured) guts for the past 2 years and Im surprised he stuck around as long as he did.
― mayor jingleberries, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 17:52 (sixteen years ago)
wtf is an OPS how many game-winning RBIs does Thome have lifetime, that's a real man's stat and you can count it too.
