Angels in six

Andy K, Monday, 12 October 2009 06:52 (fifteen years ago)

after this div series i am confronted with that familiar feeling of having my enemies subtly transformed into heroes - where aybar and abreu once struck fear into my heart now they can do no wrong. it's sort of like when the bucks would beat the celtics in the 80s.

on the other hand it might be as simple as that old new england t-shirt that reads "i have two favorite teams: the red sox and whoever's playing the yankees"

Tracer Hand, Monday, 12 October 2009 11:07 (fifteen years ago)

i have to admit the angels are very, very entertaining. it starts with torii hunter but keeps on going with aybar and chone figgins. these guys get FIRED UP.

an LAD-LAA series would be so sweet, for so many reasons. can you guys imagine abreu and manny going head to head?? there's something so similar about their brand of laid-back danger. abreu gets to the plate and always looks like he's just thought of something wry and funny.

I remember this series being really exciting at the time:

Kind of amusing that the Yanks pitching staff has turned over completely since then, with the exception of Rivera.

Your Favorite Saturday Night Thing (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 18 October 2009 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I was checking out a bunch of postseason stats today ...

ARod, 43 G, .294/.384/.519
Clutchy McClutcherson, 127 G .312/.380/.476

That's through Game 1 of this ALCS. So ARod leads in OBP and SLG, but if you look closer, Captain Fistpump has done most of his damage in the ALDS (980 OPS, 10 of his 18 postseason HR) and has been significantly worse in the ALCS and WS. IOW, he put up his biggest numbers against weaker competition.

OTOH, ARod has raked in the ALCS (1025 OPS) and not against weak opposing teams either.

mike (cherry hill)
Rob, why would pitchers stop throwing spit balls. Are the umpires watching watching more closely or are there better ways of doctoring a ball?

Rob Neyer (12:50 PM)
Well, I have two theories. One is that with all the TV cameras it's a lot harder to get away with anything. Two is that splitters and circle changeups have mostly obviated the "need" for a spitballs. (Hey, idea for new pitch: SPLITball. Discuss amongst yourselves.)

BJ (CT)
Even if Rivera does throw a spitball, there would have to be a more discreet way to do it than by holding the ball at his waist and hocking a loogy on it, right? I'm not sure he actually spit on the ball at all, but rather just spit while holding it, and the angle made it hard to see where the spit went.

Rob Neyer (12:52 PM)
That was actually my immediate reaction, too. Thanks for reminding me.

Dave (NY)
Girardi's been managing those kinds of games in 'win it right now' mode all year. I kinda like the fact that he's never seemed afraid of losing the DH; it's not the end of the world. I can't recall for sure, but I would bet that he lost the DH at least once just from Gardner running for Molina and then Posada coming out of the DH spot to catch.

Rob Neyer (12:43 PM)
Thanks, Dave. I kinda like it, too. Most games don't actually last forever, so most of the time the manager should try to win now.

one good example is in the fifth inning or so, posada gets on, STEALS SECOND, advances to third on a cano DOUBLE off the wall, then gets caught between third and home on a slow chopper. both cano and posada stand a few feet from third base, not knowing what the hell theyre doing. napoli tags both of them, mclellan decides to only call posada out

I was waiting for two players to be on the base, and when there was never the situation where both of them were on the base at the same time. When he tagged Cano, I thought Cano was on the base, and when Jorge touched the base and continued and tagged Posada out, I thought Posada was out.

After looking at replays, I'm not sure I believe the replay of the first one. I said in my heart I thought he left too soon. But the replay showed that he didn't. We go in and watch replays regularly after every game, even during the regular season. That's part of our procedures.

Then the second one it showed that Cano was off the bag when he was tagged. I did not see that for whatever reason. So obviously there were two missed calls. Obviously, or not obviously, but there were two missed calls. And I'm just out there trying to do my job and do it the best I can. And unfortunately there was by instant replay, there were two missed calls.

McClelland was up-front about everything after the game. My problem is that nobody corrected him. OK, so maybe McClelland was screened by Jorge Posada and couldn't see Mike Napoli tagging Robinson Cano. What about plate umpire Jerry Layne? What about left-field umpire Laz Diaz? Nobody saw it ... except everyone else watching? Major League Baseball should use that play in their training program ... Oh, except they don't really have training program. For such an interesting and entertaining night, we learned nothing new:

•Alex Rodriguez is a very good baseball player.

•Playing baseball well in the postseason is not a skill above and beyond playing baseball well.

It didn't have an impact on the game thanks to Rivera, but why is Chamberlain pitching ahead of Robertson, or Urban Shocker for that matter? It's depressing, but sending Joba back to the bullpen has not magically turned the clock back to 2007. There are still the makings of a fine pitcher here --- the guy just turned 24, which means he's about 2.5 years younger than Tampa's Jeff Niemann, who is going to get some Rookie of the Year votes. There is still time for him, but his moment might not be now.
