I'd pick either Nick Johnson or Vlad, seeing as they should be productive DH's for several more years. If Vlad can have a few more good years and cinch his HOF status, it'd be nice to see him enter the hall as an Expo (~ 15 years after the team ceased to exist).

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 11 June 2010 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

Either Lilly or someone totally random like Carroll or Harris or Downs.

I'd bet money on Vlad going into the HOF as an Angel.

Some of the reasons in that article (e.g. social media, revenue sharing, TV money) would apply to any potential new baseball city, not just Montreal. Also this --

Right now I’d put the chances that Montreal will get another major-league team somewhere between bandicoot battery and the likelihood that the ex-Expos (a.k.a. the Washington Nationals — will win the World Series.

-- seems to show that the reporter hasn't actually watched baseball or the Nationals in past five years or so.

Cromartie said they've also sold about 28,000 tickets for next March's gala celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 1994 Expos.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 23:26 (eleven years ago)

One of my first elementary school field trips after arriving in North America involved an Expos game at Jarry Park. It was a cold, windy day, and sitting in those bleachers through nine innings didn't let you forget it. Jarry struck me as a desolate and forlorn place, though in hindsight it was much more lovable than the Big O.

I became more of a hockey fan in those years, but the Expos were a part of the landscape, and there was something about that logo...

The first month of grade seven in '79 coincided with the epic pennant race against the Pirates. I had a classmate who'd bring in a radio to class and turn it on during class breaks to catch us up on the games. Raines made his debut that September, all of 19 years old.

I think this must make me one of ilx's resident geezers.

never have i been a blue calm sea (collardio gelatinous), Saturday, 2 November 2013 02:41 (eleven years ago)

I remember my Grade 2 class in a non-Quebec French immersion school being interrupted to watch game 5 of the Expos-Dodgers NLCS on a TV they wheeled into the auditorium. Rick Monday hit the winning home run right around the time classes were scheduled to end, IIRC, and they kicked us out. I ran home (2 blocks, unaccompanied age 7) dreaming of the Expos rallying to win in the bottom of the ninth. Dawson was due up, at least. Got home, ran to the TV and found the game: they'd gotten 2 quick outs, then 2 walks, forcing a pitching change. I sat down just as the first pitch was delivered, ground ball up the middle, easy out, game over.

The next year we took a Via train through the Rockies and I spent most of the time in the dome car carefully drawing baseball players (out of overlapping ovals) and then colouring the numbers, stripes and "elb" logo of the Expos home uniform.

Followed them as closely as I could from afar for years after that, listened to Dave Van Horne do the radio broadcasts, watched them on French CBC, bought a Rotisserie baseball stats guide with Andres Galarraga on the cover.

Haven't watched a regular season baseball game since 1994.

Plasmon, Saturday, 2 November 2013 03:51 (eleven years ago)

Cool story, Plasmon.

God I loved that VIA dome car. Did the transcontinental trip a few times, on way to various summer jobs out West. I remember one time, on my way to Prince Rupert and the Queen Charlotte Islands, I had my eyes glued on the massive Skeena River --half a mile across, boiling and swirling emerald currents marching towards the Pacific-- when this enormous thing erupted from the water, missile-like, and then fell back into it, a creature so large that in the first instant I took it to be some sort of a marine mammal, a member of the whale family, maybe... but as we rolled onward and I processed the image in my mind I realized, no, that was a fish. Sure enough, as a local sitting near me confirmed, the Chinook salmon were running. He figured the one we saw was easily sixty pounds.

What's normally the year's most exciting live baseball in Montreal? Or does one have to go to Quebec City?

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 27 March 2014 00:10 (eleven years ago)

The Quebec City team played one game here last year and something over a thousand people showed up, I think... other than that, not really any live baseball. Just wish everyone would get their head out of the clouds re: an MLB team and just get a minor league team. Vancouver has one, Ottawa is getting one, ugh.

If you're in Montreal and for some reason really hurting for live baseball I can send you my beer league's schedule, I guess!

I just discovered that an acquaintance of mine (someone I met at parties a few times and played online games with) is the son of Joel Youngblood. He's the first player to hit with two different cities, in two games, with two different teams ON THE SAME DAY, the pitchers were Jenkins and Carlton. JENKINS AND CARLTON. He did for it for the Mets and Expos. You guys must know this story by heart already. I am going to try to meet him and report back to ILB.

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/aug/11/1994-major-league-baseball-strike-montreal-expos

Wetteland, who would go on to close for the 1996 World Series champion Yankees, told the Guardian:

It’s never been reconciled in my heart. It’s never been reconciled. In 1994 we had a product on the field that would win a World Series … we understood that that was the beginning of the end in ‘94, and that was tough. I just can’t get over it, we could have had many world championships here because we were all young. But that’s life.

Andy K, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 15:18 (eleven years ago)

Kinda confused by expos fan (and expos themselves) talking of that championship like a sure thing, how many times the best record in baseball translated into actual championships? The White Sox were also very good, many other teams were. The narrative of 'we should have won the World Series and then things would have been okay' is ridiculous wishful thinking at worst, a romantic story at best. I am not denying the strike had no effect on the expos whatsoever, but there was plenty of factors and one of them was the pure apathy Montreal public towards the sport of baseball.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 23:01 (eleven years ago)

Agree, and thought so at the time. I'm not convinced they would have even won their division. They were six games up on Atlanta when the strike shut down the season; the Braves were four years into their dynasty, playing .600 baseball, and it was only the year before when they staged one of the great divisional comebacks ever. On the other hand, the Expos had been getting better as the year went on: .565 in April, then .556/.704/.692/.818.

They had about 50 games to play--I wouldn't have been shocked if the Braves had caught them. But at worst, I think they had a (brand-new) wild card locked up, especially as they only had to stay ahead of Cincinnati or Houston, and Bagwell had just gone down for the season.

clemenza, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 23:26 (eleven years ago)

Got a cheap used copy of the Keri book over the weekend--will probably read that next after Perlstein's book.

clemenza, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 00:26 (eleven years ago)

Tim Koewn wrote an article about the '94 season being romanticized as whatever you wanted it to be. The Expos would have won the WS, Gwynn would have hit .400, somebody would have hit 62 homers -- as time passes, each of these becomes more of a certainty in the eyes of many people, and you can't really disagree because the season was never finished.

But yeah, winning the WS obviously wasn't a sure thing, but they would have made the playoffs and possibly kicked off a successful run not unlike the '90's Indians or the post '08 Brewers (i.e. two "smaller market" franchises that were transformed by finally getting over the hump and making the playoffs after two decades of losing). Maybe more guys would have stayed with the Expos in '95 and '96 if they'd had a deep playoff run in '94.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 08:44 (eleven years ago)

And I really need to get the Keri book.

I finally started reading "Up Up and Away" as a spring training present to myself (I bought it a few months ago and finally started reading it this week). I'm about sixty pages in and it's perfect pre-season reading, full of amusing stories and cool factoids (like the English to Quebecois French translation of baseball terms). No bitterness, just a "this was fun while it lasted" vibe throughout (maybe the bitterness comes later though).

I had no idea that MLB awarded a franchise to MTL before there was an ownership group in place! The business of baseball has really changed since the late 60's ...

pop-up/line drive/grounder = candle/arrow/roller
a shutout = laundry!!!
pitch hitter = emergency hitter (but a pinch runner is just a substitute runner, lol)

and then there's the ones that are just fun to say... moyen du puissance! balle glissante!

fly ball is ballon, which is the name we give to bigger balls like a basketball or a soccer ball.

I'm up to the chapter about 1994 (it gets its own chapter). I've been kind of dreading this part of the book, since it's nothing but a series of crushing disappointments from here until the end, but OTOH Keri's been keeping the negativity to a minimum so maybe I'm in for a surprise.

I'd almost forgotten how bad Expos ownership was in the pre-Loria days. Keri tries to be neutral on most things, and in many ways Charles Bronfman comes across as a visionary who helped bring the Expos to Montreal and led them through their late 70's/early '80's heyday. But to me he also comes across as a greedy asshole, even more so than your usual scummy baseball owner. He was arguably the most enthusiastic supporter of collusion in the 80's, and interviewees in the book say that he was personally crushed to discover that players wanted to be paid better and would sometimes sign with the highest bidder. He saw the Expos as a family business (where only he was allowed to make money of course) and couldn't understand why the ungrateful players didn't share in that loyalty, they just wanted more money.

The Expos also tried to squeeze the Jays out of their own markets in the 80's, which I hadn't heard about before. People partly blamed the Expos' downfall on the Jays, claiming that the Spos couldn't possibly survive unless they had nearly exclusive rights to broadcast anywhere in Canada, but particularly in Southern Ontario. Last I checked, the Canadiens do just fine despite the Leafs, and the population of Montreal is still larger than most MLB cities. And where exactly were the Jays supposed to broadcast their games??

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 20 March 2016 10:14 (nine years ago)

I agree with Kerri, reading between the lines I think he admits that Montrealers don't care about baseball. You have some niches groups here and there, enough to get the O filled up for those two meaningless spring training games, but if you ask random montrealers they would struggle to name all 30 MLB teams. I keep asking about Mike Trout and 9 times out of ten they have no idea. It gets worse outside of the city, although Quebec City has a solid core of baseball fanatics for whatever reason. I don't have numbers to back that claim but I'm certain soccer and football are way more popular, and way more part of the collective consciousness. Jays and Jays' ownership were within their rights to solidify their own markets, it's just that it exposed the ugly truth that Montreal does not care about baseball like say lots of american cities do. Also, comparatively to other NA markets, Montreal was financially poor and struggling up until quite recently.

Also, Habs have fans all across Canada and are tied to a nationalist sentiment unlike any other club in the major leagues, I don't think you can compare both situations.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 20 March 2016 16:35 (nine years ago)

I mean, you have one of the most beloved players of his generation reaching the eternal 3000 hits plateau and the attendance was of 13,540.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 20 March 2016 16:40 (nine years ago)

You could say a lot of the same things about Jays fans though. Baseball always comes second to hockey. Both Torontonians and Montrealers will support a winning baseball team, but when the team is playing badly that support collapsed. With the hockey teams, fan support is much more constant, particularly in Toronto (that's not necessarily a compliment -- Toronto hockey fans will tolerate way too much mediocrity, whereas Montreal fans are smart enough not to tolerate that shit).

At the time (late '90's) I thought a new stadium in Montreal wasn't the solution, but now I'm not so sure after seeing what it's done for other teams in recent years after moving from suburban multipurpose stadiums into downtown baseball only parks (e.g. Pittsburgh, SF).

Finished it ... it was about what I expected -- an easy read that brought back a lot of memories. It feels like he barely scratched the surface on a lot of things, he interviewed about one hundred people and could probably fill up another book just with stories and oral histories if he wanted.

Now, just because a group of investors have met MLB’s conditions, it does not mean baseball’s return to Montreal is imminent. Hardly. Commissioner Rob Manfred has said he wants the Rays and Athletics to get new ballparks before considering expansion, plus MLB would surely open up the bidding to multiple cities.

Bleh, we already have enough taxes and debt like it is, and no way a stadium is built without some government funding. I love baseball, of course, and would welcome an expansion team, but that scam has been going for too long.

qualx, Friday, 14 July 2017 22:15 (eight years ago)

i'm sure that's part of it, but . . . the rockies paid a $95m expansion fee in 1992. the new las vegas team in the nhl just paid $500m. a new baseball team would be $1b at least, i would think, of straight-up free money? even split 30 ways that's a lot

mookieproof, Friday, 14 July 2017 23:27 (eight years ago)

i don't think it'll happen before those two teams get their parks though. really, they need to be relocated before anyone even thinks about expansion, but that isn't coming from a $$ standpoint.

i agree with AGon though, if the goal of mexico expansion is to open up the entire country's market and/or diplomatic baseball reasons, it doesn't need to be a logistical nightmare like mexico city. monterrey is at least a hell of a lot closer to the rest of the league and shorter than denver by several thousand feet.

My guess would be he had a hand in getting Montreal a team--he was PM up till '68? I think there are a bunch of non-Canadian Jays and Expos in there.

"Canada’s 14th Prime Minister, Lester B. Pearson, was a fine all-around athlete who participated in a variety of sports, including hockey, football, rugby, basketball and lacrosse. But baseball was Pearson’s true passion. He suited up alongside his brother, Vaughan, with the Guelph Maple Leafs of the Ontario Intercounty Baseball League and attended games at Toronto’s famed Hanlan’s Point stadium as a youngster.

Later in life, the Nobel Peace Prize winner served as an honorary board member with the Montreal Expos. After his death, the Pearson Cup, named in his honour, was presented to the winner of an annual exhibition game between the Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos from 1978 to 1986."

So...he liked baseball seems to be the reason.

(As I mentioned when I moved to St. Mary's, a five-minute walk from my house.) I was scanning old Expos photos this morning, as they digitize their collections. Chris Nabholz, Bob Natal, Graig Nettles (had to check the spelling), Al Newman, Reid Nichols, Steve Nicosia, Otis Nixon; I'll have to mention that they need a file for Tom Nieto.

Bought a dozen pocket schedules at the Toronto card show today, 1989-2004, $1 each (missing '91/93/00/01, but already found pretty cheap on eBay). The guy had early ones going back to the '70s, but they were more expensive. Also cards for Bobby Wine, Mack ("the Knife") Jones, and John Boc-a-BELL-a from the '70 Topps set. They were mint and only $1--must be reprints.

On the Jays front, a couple of Syracuse Chiefs media guides from the mid-'80s for $5 each.
