We know that if these games stay close and turn into bullpen battles (like 75% of the games in the playoffs this year), then the Phillies will lose. The Phillies will have to pound on the Yanks starters early, but their offense is up to the job and Pettitte and Burnett are hittable. Lee and Pedro will start twice, Hamels at least once. If Hamels stops sucking then I can see the Phillies winning four of those five starts.

Phillies in six, ARod hits ten homers but strikes out in the ninth inning of game six, gets blamed for everything.

Jay-Z to perform at World Series

By MESFIN FEKADU Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP)—The New York Yankees have been blasting Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” during their playoff run. Now, the team is having the rap king perform the song live to kick off Game 1 of the World Series.

Jay-Z and fellow New Yorker Alicia Keys are set to perform the hit on Wednesday, as the Yankees take on defending World Series champs, the Philadelphia Phillies.

In an interview Monday, Jay-Z was excited about the performance, and said: “Thank the good Lord for making me a Yankee.”

He calls the opportunity a “once in a lifetime experience.”

Yankees pitching coach Dave Eiland said Tuesday that the Yankees are "stretching out" Chad Gaudin to potentially start Game 5 of the World Series.

New York could go with a three-man rotation of CC Sabathia, A.J. great thread so far--can't wait for the series to start tonight

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 14:10 (sixteen years ago)

Kinda off-topic, but in retrospect, all the Eckstein worship is the most hilarious shit ever, in five years, even the Kruks of the world will be saying "why did we make such a big deal about this guy???" ... it all came about only because the drama all happened earlier in the postseason (A's win a series under Beane, Yanks get humiliated by Tigers, ARod bats eighth, Cards upset Mets) and so what do you do when the WS is played between two mediocre teams who played horrible baseball over the last quarter of the regular season and nearly choked away their postseason spots? And when the key plays of the WS itself involve multiple throwing errors by pitchers and players falling down in the outfield? You invent DAVID ECKSTEIN, baseball superhero? WTF???

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:07 (sixteen years ago)

It was pretty hilarious at the time too, but somehow seemed to fit into the narrative of the '06 postseason, does that make sense? I mean, I didn't do a massive double-take at the time when Eckstein was hailed as the new Ty Cobb.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:10 (sixteen years ago)

when Eckstein was hailed as the new Ty Cobb

pretty sure this nvr happened

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:18 (sixteen years ago)

he's just an archetype of the popcorn munchers' ((c) morbs) vision of the perfect baseball player - he does all the little things, is "clutch", is a team player, etc. same shit happens with, say, jeter except jeter's actually a very good player and eckstein was an average leadoff guy at his peak

k3vin k., Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:20 (sixteen years ago)

guys it is the fact that he doesn't look or move like a professional athlete--he validates ppl's dreams that if they hadn't blown out their knee senior year of hs they could be in the big leagues too

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

otm, that too

k3vin k., Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

Eckstein winning WS MVP put the cap on some slight aggravation, yeah. Tigers won 95 games (lost division pennant on last day of season despite leading for so long, but whatever), basically steamrolled through the ALDS and ALCS, then had a full week off (three times the length of an all-star break) and (unsurprisingly) fell flat against an 83-win team. It would have been easier to stomach with Pujols domination i/o Eckstein's scrappy array of bleeders and gorks and whatnot somehow adding up to POSTSEASON HEROICS.

Andy K, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:47 (sixteen years ago)

All I can say is that after watching Eckstein play for my team for a year, I really like the way he approaches at-bats. I think he might make a better coach than a player, although maybe he's a little too reserved for that.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 18:14 (sixteen years ago)

you like the way he walks to the plate? i dont follow

k3vin k., Wednesday, 28 October 2009 18:21 (sixteen years ago)

He fouls off a lot of pitches, basically. I don't know if the stats back it up, but it seems like he sees a lot of pitches.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 18:23 (sixteen years ago)

the mo vaughn theory actually makes a lot of sense...

jØrdån (omar little), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 18:25 (sixteen years ago)

He tends to be above average at reaching base, but in '09 four Padres w/ 400+ PAs beat him at that.

Andy K, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

he's right about at the league average for pitches per plate appearance - eckstein: 3.80, league: 3.83

he's got a above-average on-base percentage, which is why he's a serviceable leadoff guy i guess

k3vin k., Wednesday, 28 October 2009 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

his OBP this past year was .323, which kinda sucks

jØrdån (omar little), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that's awful no doubt, i was looking at career tho

k3vin k., Wednesday, 28 October 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

i would not like to have him on my team b/c he's one of those dudes whose constant hustle masks his incredible deficiencies imo

jØrdån (omar little), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

You can tell by the way he grits his teeth and shakes his arms in the box that he's thinking, "Not so fast, Mr. Mean Pitcher Man! You might be taller than me but I am going to run out this forthcoming dribbler!" It will inspire Everth Cabrera to produce beyond his ability. That's just one of the many things we do not see in the box score.

Andy K, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 18:44 (sixteen years ago)

Hopefully Luis Durango can start at 2b next year, but Eckstein was the best option the Padres had in 2009.

So anyway, the Yankees and the Phillies.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

Veteran Fox analyst Tim McCarver used to be a catcher. But, he suggests, his mike presents more challenges than foul tips. "It's a lot tougher to announce a World Series that it is to play in one," he says. "Playing in it, you can do something about it."

Andy K, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 19:19 (sixteen years ago)

Haha, I don't follow the logic (which pretty much sums up my take on McCarver as a colour analyst too).

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

I realized this aft that this is the first WS I'm genuinely excited about since '04. Two good teams (that you have to love/hate, with no inbetween), definitely not one of those sad mismatches like '07, last year's champs coming back to defend ...

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 20:37 (sixteen years ago)

a goon boy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 29 October 2009 01:39 (sixteen years ago)

not a blown call - judging by the delayed safe sign, the ump prob knew he missed the plate, there was just no appeal

idk if there is any such rule ... there is no call until the runner either touches the plate or is tagged out. Neither one of those things happened.

so what was the "blown call"?

k3vin k., Monday, 2 November 2009 02:57 (sixteen years ago)

There was no play at the plate (runner never touched the plate and was never tagged), so the ump had no business making a call.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 2 November 2009 03:00 (sixteen years ago)

dude you're not making a point here. the "safe" could have just as easily been regarding the tag (posada dropped the ball).

k3vin k., Monday, 2 November 2009 03:02 (sixteen years ago)

no k3v, you don't understand the rule.

Your Favorite Saturday Night Thing (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 November 2009 03:03 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think it's the same as e.g. appealing to third base if the defense thinks the runner tagged up and left too soon ... in that case there is a ruling at the plate (safe) and the ruling is appealed. With Howard, I don't think he automatically becomes safe after a minimum time lapse.

7.08 Any runner is out when—
(k) In running or sliding for home base, he fails to touch home base and makes no attempt to return to the base, when a fielder holds the ball in his hand, while touching home base, and appeals to the umpire for the decision.

k3vin k., Monday, 2 November 2009 03:24 (sixteen years ago)

yes, but he's not safe if he doesn't touch the base.

Your Favorite Saturday Night Thing (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 November 2009 03:27 (sixteen years ago)

sure he is. he's not out, surely?

k3vin k., Monday, 2 November 2009 03:28 (sixteen years ago)

the point is the run counts, as it should if there's no appeal. the ump didnt miss any call, since there was no call to be made. if he made a delayed safe sign, it was to indicate that there was no tag

k3vin k., Monday, 2 November 2009 03:30 (sixteen years ago)

unless i'm totally overlooking something

also yeah, their team's about to fall behind 3-1, i'd be a lil bummed too

k3vin k., Monday, 2 November 2009 03:38 (sixteen years ago)

The point is that there shouldn't be a "delayed safe" call, like if a runner tries to steal 2nd but misses the bag (and the fielder drops the ball) then he doesn't stand up and take a lead off of 2nd. The play isn't over until he's on the bag or is tagged.

These sorts of plays at home aren't so uncommon, normally, the ump just stands there until the catcher or runner realizes that no call was made.

One thing that's not clear from 7.08 k, is what happens if the ump makes no call and neither team notices it, the runner goes back to the dugout, etc. At that point I guess it functions like a normal appeal play ... i.e. the defense can still appeal until they make a play on another batter/runner, e.g. until the next pitch is thrown.

yeah and not to belabor this but that's exactly the way i interpret it...i still don't see anything wrong with a little "safe" signal (safe in scarequotes b/c he's not actually calling him "safe", he's saying "not out") saying there's no tag. same as a second base umpire signaling "safe" when a charging second baseman tries to tag an advancing runner b/w frist & second before throwing to first (wasn't that knoblauch years ago in the WS?)

o really shittily.

i basically ran with the teams being almost evenly matched..

so 50/50 chance for each team each night, but with yanks needing one and phils needing two puts us at
yanks 75% phils 25%

then +5% for phils pedro fully rested in elimination game, pettite on 3 days rest
canceled out by a potential game 7 sabathia +5% against a dogshit hamels or remaining phils staff flavor rainbow
with an additional +5% for return to AL, Matsui back at DH, whatever ephemeral home crowd advantage muted by phils success on the road

if this scenario went down every november ad infinitum we would be morbsless and phils would snatch ~two titles every decade.

Neyer:

Goat: Charlie Manuel never did figure out his bullpen. Not during the regular season, and not during the postseason. When Pedro Martinez left Game 6 after the fourth inning, the Phillies were down but not out. Three quick runs later, and their chances of winning had dropped below 5 percent. (Also, a number of Manuel's hitters didn't do much hitting in this Series, including -- but not limited to -- Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, and Pedro Feliz.

Costly Move: During the regular season, J.A. Happ went 12-4 with a 2.93 ERA. Somehow, Manuel was able to get Happ only two and one-third innings of work, all in relief, during the World Series.

Your Favorite Saturday Night Thing (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 November 2009 13:14 (sixteen years ago)

Boss: As I said, your qualifications are most impressive.

Centaur: Thank you.

Boss: Now.. would you mind if I asked you a few questions about being a Centaur?

Centaur: Please. Go ahead. Believe me, I've heard them all?

Boss: Can I ride you?

Centaur: [ chuckles ] Only if I can ride you!

Boss: [ chuckles back ] Fair enough. Moving on.. could you enter yourself in the Kentucky Derby?

Centaur: Hmm.. I don't know..

Boss: If you did.. would you have to have a little horse riding on you, like instead of a jockey?

Centaur: I.. I see what you're saying.. but, again, I don't know.

Boss: Because, it seems like you already have a jockey with the person part of you.

Centaur: Right.. uh, are we going to discuss my medical qualifications..?

Boss: The rest of the interview will be Centaur questions. Do you have sex with horses, or with human women?

Centaur: Uh.. neither. I'm really only attracted to other Centaurs.

Boss: Okay. What if were a horse with a mask of a woman on it?

Centaur: No. I mean, would you have sex with a monkey if it had a mask on?

Boss: This interview is not about me. What if you saw a horse, but it was standing so that its head was in a barn, or something. Would you, maybe, be attracted to that horse's rear end?

Centaur: Uh.. I don't.. where is the head, exactly?

Boss: It's in the barn.. or behind a door, or a vase, or something.. so you can't see it.

Centaur: Uh.. I might be attracted to it - briefly.

Boss: Okay. So, let's say, hypothetically, that you could have sex with the back end.. and it's guranteed to be the greatest sex you ever had.. but you'd never know if it was as horse or as Centaur?

Centaur: Hmm.. you know, that's pretty intriguing.. uh.. if I'd really never know, I guess I would.

Boss: It was a horse.

Centaur: Oh, come on!

Boss: It was a horse. Deal with it. Now.. could you make the back half of you into glue, and then could the person part of you use that glue to repair a bird feeder?

Centaur: Yes.

Boss: Do you dump wherever you're standing, or do you use toilets? Or, do you use some magical Centaur toilet?

Centaur: We use regular bathrooms.

Boss: Do you use special Centaur toilet paper?

Centaur: Nope. We use nortmal toilet paper.

Boss: How do you reach back there.. to wipe yourself?

Centaur: Uh.. there is a device we use, it's called an Aubesian - it's a stainless steel telescoping rod, with gripper claws, and a sort of toggle line that allows you to move the paper back and forth.

Boss: So.. there's a company that manufactures Centaur asswipers?

Centaur: Aubesians, yes. Um.. there's a store that's a sort of crate-and-barrel for Centaurs, called Aubesians & Such.. there's one on 57th Street.

Boss: I've seen that establishment. You eat steak.. is that some kind of cannibalism?

Centaur: I'm sorry, could we return to a line of questioning related to my medical qualifications?

Boss: Absolutely. Let me just find the right paperwork.. [ looks through his notes ] Um.. here we go.. Is there Centaur pornography?

Centaur: That is not a medical question!

Boss: Do you want this job?

Centaur: [ sighs ] Yes, there is Centaur porn.

You might have trouble convincing a Cubs fan or a Giants fan or an Indians fan that it has been a long time since the Yankees had themselves a night like this. But it's longer than you think.

The last time they did this, the men squirting champagne all over the Gang of Four were long-lost names like David Justice, and Denny Neagle, and even Jose Canseco. It feels like those guys haven't played in the big leagues in 90 years, not nine. But the last time the Yankees floated down the Canyon of Heroes, those men were riding right along with them.

In between titles, Mike Mussina came and went. Jason Giambi came and went. Even Raul Mondesi, Rondell White and Karim Garcia came and went.

wow that sure is a long time, this cubs fan is amazed at that long wait. p.s. my grandparents were born in 1911, 1916, and 1918 and died in 1994, 1998, and 1999 and guess what never happened during their entire lifetimes....

- thanks to points 1 and 3 they field excellent teams more years than not
- this is obvious to 90% of everyone including yankee fans
- it pisses off a lot of baseball fans; this has bearing on the conversation only insofar as it might result in a reduced fanbase for the sport, though as far as i can tell this isnt really the case
