As Spock quoted that Vulcan maxim to Kirk, "It took Steinbrenner to go to China."

Seeking Edge in China, Yankees Put Baseball First
By TYLER KEPNER

The Yankees consider themselves the most driven team in a competitive sport, so their push to boost baseball in China is not purely altruistic. They believe there is talent to be cultivated in China, and when future prospects have a choice of where to sign, the Yankees want their brand and reputation to stand out.

“It’s like Latin America,” General Manager Brian Cashman said yesterday, after a news briefing to disclose the Yankees’ plans. “Everyone has equal access; you just try to do it better.”

The Yankees have been working with the Chinese Baseball Association for more than six months to forge a relationship that would allow the Yankees to send coaches, scouts and trainers to China. Cashman and three other executives — Randy Levine, the team president; Jean Afterman, the assistant general manager; and Michael Tusiani, the vice president for corporate sales and sponsorships — accepted an invitation to travel to Beijing next week.“They’re dedicated to this,” Levine said. “They like the game. As you can see from their history, they’re great athletes, and there’s no doubt in my mind there will be a lot of great baseball players coming out of there in the future.”

While they are in Asia, the Yankees will also meet with officials from the Yomiuri Giants and the Hanshin Tigers, both Japanese teams. The Yankees signed Hideki Matsui, a former Giant, before the 2003 season, and signed the former Hanshin pitcher Kei Igawa last month.

The Yankees have a working agreement with Yomiuri, a partnership in which the teams share ideas and strategies, if not actual players. The relationship has also helped the Yankees economically; The Yomiuri Shinbun, a daily newspaper, has a giant billboard across the left-field wall at Yankee Stadium.

The purpose of meeting with the Tigers, Levine said, was to thank them for facilitating the deal with Igawa. Hanshin accepted the Yankees’ bid of $26 million to negotiate with him, and Afterman said the visit would help the Yankees learn more about Igawa’s background.

But the overriding purpose of the trip is to build a foundation in China, which has produced no major leaguers and lost all three of its games in the World Baseball Classic last March by the combined score of 40-6.

Levine said the Yankees could eventually sponsor an academy in China, on their own or with Major League Baseball. He added that it was “not out of the question” that baseball could eventually stage games in China.

Chinese baseball officials will also visit the Yankees’ facilities in New York and Tampa, Fla., for guidance.

“I want to make it clear: This is paving the way for all teams,” Levine said. “I think the power of the Yankee brand all over the world is what’s been driving this.”

The Yankees’ presence in China will give more exposure to their well-known brand, but yesterday’s briefing offered few details of the business aspects of the trip. The primary motivation is baseball, Levine said. To Cashman, the venture made sense for the long term.

“It’s a country of roughly a billion people that has expressed an interest in the sport of baseball,” Cashman said. “As we’ve all seen over the years, when China has an interest in a particular sport — and they invest time, effort and money — they typically become very good at that sport.

“So on behalf of the industry, as we bring the passion of the great game of baseball to that country to speed up that process, it’s in everybody’s best interests.”

Well, missed the B&N signing yesterday! nice Boras quote:

Rodriguez Avoids a High-and-Tight Pitch
By MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT
NY Times

It seemed like a harmless enough event for Alex Rodriguez — a book signing for his new children’s book at a Barnes & Noble store in Midtown Manhattan.

But the distractions began shortly after Rodriguez, the Yankees’ third baseman, arrived around 1:30 p.m. yesterday.

As Rodriguez posed for photographers holding a copy of the book, “Out of the Ballpark” (HarperCollins), a middle-aged man holding a camera tossed a baseball at Rodriguez, apparently because he wanted an autograph. The ball hit the ceiling — if thrown more accurately it could have hit Rodriguez — and then bounced on the floor. The man then scooted out of the store.

Later, as reporters spoke with Rodriguez, a publicist from HarperCollins quickly tried to end the questions. Rodriguez kept talking and a reporter from Newsday was grabbed by a police officer and pushed away. In his brief conversation with reporters, Rodriguez skirted a question about opting out of his 10-year, $252 million contract at the end of this season, saying, “My situation and my only goal is to win a world championship, and I am going to take it day to day.”

Rodriguez is going into the seventh year of his deal, and his fourth season with the Yankees. Under the terms of the contract, he has the right to walk away from the final three years of the deal and sign a new contract with the Yankees or any other team.

Rodriguez’s agent, Scott Boras, told The Associated Press yesterday that Rodriguez was happy in New York, and that he and Rodriguez would probably not talk about the contract until after the season.

“Obviously, when Alex’s contract was done, the revenues of the game were around $3 billion,” Boras said. “Now they are around $6 billion. The elite position player has not been really graded in this new revenue stream we’ve seen.” Translation: Rodriguez, in Boras’s opinion, can probably make more money with a new deal after this season.

Rodriguez, meanwhile, said that he did not believe he had anything to repair with Manager Joe Torre, who, in frustration, dropped Rodriguez to eighth in the batting order for Game 4 of last season’s playoff series against Detroit. Rodriguez had only one hit through the first three games of that series.

“I am an employee,” Rodriguez said. “If Joe says take out the garbage, I take out the garbage.”

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

I think the elite position player has been graded in the new revenue stream by the assload of huge contracts handed out to even the shittiest of major leaguers.

Carl Pavano apparently begged off some workouts (Sunday). If it was any other pitcher, we wouldn't make a big deal out of it, so we'll just note it in passing for now. Carl Pavano. Felt a little weak. Needed a breather. Did not, as far as we know, drive his sports car into a tree after. He was too tired.

Also, it's pretty easy to do this in April. Let's see what he does in the clutchier months of August and September.

lol @ fantasy advice on yahoo:

Apr 7 Rodriguez hit a grand slam off Chris Ray with two outs in the ninth inning, giving the Yankees a memorable 10-7 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday. Rodriguez homered twice, doubled and drove in six runs.

Advice: Two days earlier, he popped out with the bases loaded to end the eighth in a 7-6 loss to Tampa Bay.

sanskrit, Thursday, 19 April 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

Why were they cheering another meaningless Slap-Rod HR?

Jack Curry NY Times hilarity:

...But, as athletic as Jeter is, he has flaws, too. Jeter does not have as much range to his left as he does to his right, and he can be streaky.

“As I say, he may not be as fluid as other people when they make plays,” Torre said. “But Derek has a presence out there and, again, he seems to be in control all the time.”

Almost on cue after Torre’s remarks, Jeter was in total control on one stylish play in the third. Víctor Martínez hit a grounder to the left of the pitcher’s mound. Jeter scooted over and grabbed the ball before it slithered into the outfield. He pivoted, did a 360-degree turn, jumped and made a nifty one-bounce throw to first. The lumbering Martínez was easily nabbed.

So, on Martínez’s ball, Jeter’s range to his left was not suspect. On other plays, Jeter has doubters. In the 2007 “Bill James Handbook,” there is a statistic called range factor. It is defined as the number of successful chances (putouts plus assists) times nine and divided by the number of innings played. Jeter’s range factor was 4.14 in 2006, which was 25th among the 30 regular shortstops in the major leagues. Not surprisingly, Jeter dismissed that analysis.

“They think they have a mathematical equation that figures everything out,” Jeter said. “Like every single person is out there with the same runner and the same pitcher and the ball is hit in the same exact place. It seems like once somebody says one thing about you, people tend to run with it and we never hear the end of it.”

Torre said he was not concerned with Jeter’s defense and instead lauded the intangibles he offers.

“There was a little bit of a pop,” Hughes said. “But there was no sharp pain or anything like that.”

Still, Hughes will be placed on the disabled list with a hamstring injury that Manager Joe Torre described as significant. Torre guessed that Hughes would miss four to six weeks, making him the Yankees’ fifth starting pitcher to land on the disabled list this season.

Abreu is in a slump for hits over the past couple of weeks, but the guy draws walks like crazy.

I think the Yanks are crazy to spend that kind of cash to get Clemens. They need another starter, but if they would have just spent that money stocking up on a couple of mid-level pitchers in the off season, they would not be in the mess they are in now.

Or just ride out the slump, because slumps happen? Unless you want to indulge in the same sort of thinking that shoved A-Rod in the 8th slot, and Abreu out the door in Philly?

David R., Monday, 7 May 2007 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

David R., Monday, 7 May 2007 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

Haha point taken, but given how Abreu has hit over the course of the last year I'm thinking this is less a slump and more just the kind of no slugging hitter that he is.

Alex in SF, Monday, 7 May 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

It's a slump! He slugged over .500 when he came to NY (yes, after 339 ABs of a .437 thing)! If this nonsense was happening in mid-July, folks wouldn't be saying Word One about this, because it'd be hidden amidst his expected awesomeness.

Unless he was on the juice. That'd explain a lot.

I blame A-Rod.

David R., Monday, 7 May 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

Any word on what they're paying Clemens for his services?

Clemens will earn $28 000 022 (pro-rated). IOW, about $18M from the time he joins the team through the end of the season (although it will cost the Yanks another 7M in luxury tax on top of that).

I like that players still do fun things with their contracts, like tacking on an extra $22 to match their uniform numbers.

At the Stadium, Stay Put When the Music Plays
By MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT
The most patriotic moments at Yankee Stadium can also be the most confining.

Seconds before “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America” are played, police officers, security guards and ushers turn their backs to the American flag in center field, stare at fans moving through the stands and ask them to stop. Across the stadium’s lower section, ushers stand every 20 feet to block the main aisle with chains.

As the songs are played or sung, the crowd appears motionless.

The national anthem has long been a pregame staple at sporting events. But after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Major League Baseball directed teams to play “God Bless America” before the bottom of the seventh inning at every game. Baseball scaled back the next season, telling teams they needed to play the song only on Sundays and holidays, which is still the case.

Only the Yankees continue to play “God Bless America” at every home game. They are also the only ones to use chains to prevent fans from moving during both songs, which concerns some civil liberties advocates.

Howard J. Rubenstein, the spokesman for the Yankees’ principal owner, George Steinbrenner, said the policy was an expression of patriotism.

“Mr. Steinbrenner wanted to do all games to remind the fans about how important it is to honor our nation, our service members, those that died on Sept. 11 and those fighting for our nation,” Rubenstein said in a telephone interview.

In the month after the attacks, baseball and patriotism seemed to be intertwined, and the idea to restrict the movement of fans was born. Lonn A. Trost, the team’s chief operating officer, said fans sent the Yankees’ front office hundreds of e-mail messages and letters and made phone calls to complain about how other fans were not paying respect.

“The fans were telling us it was a disgrace that when the song was being sung people were not observing it with a moment of silence,” Trost said.

Trost said Steinbrenner was presented with the fan complaints and agreed to a plan to restrict movement. By mid-October 2001, he said, the Yankees’ implemented a system using off-duty uniformed police officers, ushers, stadium security personnel and the aisle chains to restrict movement. The Yankees pay the city to use police officers as part of the security detail.

Trost said the ushers were instructed to allow fans with emergencies to move through the stands. Because one end of each chain is held by a person, instead of secured in place, the system is not considered a fire hazard, a spokeswoman for the New York Fire Department said.

Trost said the Yankees have not heard any complaints about either the continued playing of “God Bless America” or the restrictions on movement.

“Before 9/11, we recognized the spirit and importance of the way of life we live in this country,” he said. “We have always been a major supporter of everything that relates on a patriotic basis. Men and women are serving, and we believe as an organization we should remember them and how they are out there on the forefront.”

The Mets, meanwhile, have not heard complaints from fans about behavior during the songs and have not implemented similar restrictions, a team spokesman said.

Patrick Courtney, a spokesman for Major League Baseball, said teams determine what is appropriate at their stadiums. The Yankees are the only major league team to use chains, according to a survey of teams. But at least eight others — the Marlins, the Phillies, the Padres, the Rangers, the Twins, the Astros, the Athletics and the Red Sox — instruct ushers to prevent fans from moving through the aisles when the songs are played.

Some civil liberties advocates worry that the Yankees may be restricting freedom in the name of freedom.

“Yankee management is free to promote its brand of musical patriotism,” Arthur Eisenberg, the legal director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said in a written statement. “But we need to be wary of enforced cultural conformity and the use of a ballgame to impose political correctness on a captive audience.”

The organization said it would consider legal action only if a fan were arrested for disobeying the measure.

Michael C. Dorf, a constitutional law professor at Columbia Law School, said the Yankees had the right to restrict movement.

“It doesn’t violate the Constitution, because the Yankees are not the government,” Dorf said. “If they were a municipally owned team, you could have an issue because the team would be a state actor.”

Dorf said that he would be at today’s game and that the use of chains did not bother him and probably would not upset most fans.

“But at the same time, it could for people who have a different view of their patriotism,” he said. “It will be compelled speech or compelled silence.”

Joe Morgan Presents THE MONITORING OF THE 2007 YANKEES' MAJESTIC JOURNEY TO 1000 RUNS

"Going into tonight, through 34 games, the New York Yankees -- who possess what is perhaps the most powerful lineup ever assembled in the history of professional baseball -- have scored 192 runs, putting them on pace to score 914 runs by the end of the year. You have to remember: this is the Yankees we're talking about, a team with a circular offense, and it would be no surprise at all if they really poured it on at any given moment for an extended period of time, such as months. The fact that Alex Rodriguez currently has twice as many RBIs as Derek Jeter tells you all you really need to know. It's just a matter of time before the rest of the offense catches up and begins to produce the way the way it is expected. And if the figure I just gave you isn't convincing enough, consider that Rodriguez has more home runs than the combined total from Jeter, Johnny Damon, Robby Abreu, Robinson Cano, Melky Cabrera, Mickey Rivers, Jorge Posada, and the underrated Doug Mientkiewicz. And while it is true that both the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers have 194 runs after their games today and are currently competing with the Yankees for most runs scored, you have to consider that the Red Sox offense simply isn't as good as you've been led to believe. And the Tigers, well, you're talking about a team that struggled to hit .200 during the World Series, and the entire offense is now a year older, which could only have a negative impact down the stretch. You also have to factor that, right now, the Red Sox and Tigers have played one more game than the Yankees, because some games are played during the daytime and others are at night, or on the West Coast. So that's nine whole innings that both the Red Sox and Tigers have over the Yankees. In other words, I do believe the Yankees will surpass 1000 runs this season."

francisF, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

Ask Joe Morgan!

David R., Wednesday, 16 May 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

"First of all, it was the Division Series that the Yankees and Tigers played. As I said before, you have to remember that the Tigers knew going into the series that each and every one of them would have to play the best baseball of their lives to advance. That's how good the Yankees were, and they're even better now, even without Gary Sheffield. I probably discounted the luck factor as well, because that certainly played a part in the Tigers winning the series. Jim Leyland, the Tigers' manager, was so afraid to use his bench that he never went to it. You have to wonder what that says. In game one, Nate Robertson gave up 12 hits and five runs in just short of six innings, but it was still the best pitching performance he could've possibly mustered. I had only seen him pitch once before but I can guarantee beyond all doubt that he pitched the game of his life. As for whether or not you were insinuating that I insinuated that the Yankees' aren't older this year, well, it doesn't matter because I won't qualify it with an answer."

Report: Giambi failed amphetamines test
May 23, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- Jason Giambi failed an amphetamines test within the last year, the Daily News reported Wednesday.

The newspaper reported that after the failed amphetamines test, Giambi is subjected to six additional tests for one year. The newspaper did not cite any sources in its report.

Giambi declined comment to the newspaper before the New York Yankees' 7-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.

The Yankees slugger recently said in a USA Today interview that he was "probably tested more than anybody else."

On Tuesday, lawyers for the commissioner's office and the players' association held more conversations about a possible meeting with Giambi but it remained uncertain when or if such a gathering would take place.

Lawyers for Major League Baseball would like to talk to Giambi about comments in last Friday's editions of USA Today.

"I was wrong for doing that stuff," the New York Yankees designated hitter was quoted as saying, remarks some have interpreted as an admission of steroids use.

Management lawyers would like to hold the meeting as soon as is practicable. The failed amphetamines test most likely wouldn't be discussed at a meeting since MLB policy is to keep a first positive test secret.

Hall of Famer Frank Robinson took issue with one of Giambi's comments.

"What we should have done a long time ago was stand up -- players, ownership, everybody -- and said: 'We made a mistake,"' Giambi was quoted as saying. "We should have apologized back then and made sure we had a rule in place and gone forward. ... Steroids and all of that was a part of history. But it was a topic that everybody wanted to avoid. Nobody wanted to talk about it."

Robinson said Giambi should speak for himself.

"If Jason wants to confess, then he should come out and say: `I'm guilty. I apologize. I apologize to baseball. I apologize to all the fans that have supported me and supported baseball over the years. And I will clean up my act and promise you I will not do anything like this again,"' Robinson said during an interview on ESPN. "He should not drag others into (it), because when he says baseball, that includes everybody in baseball."

Before the Yankees played Boston on Tuesday night, Giambi was asked about a report in the New York Post that said the Los Angeles Angels had an interest in acquiring him. Giambi has a full no-trade clause.

"This is all news to me. I'm a Yankee," he said. "It's kind of fun to read. I never asked for it."

hstencil, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

boldbury, i hope you forced stenc to sing God Bless America good & loud.

No such luck. Actually, I was pretty disappointed with the canned renditions of "God Bless America" and "The Star Spangled Banner" that they trotted out at Yankee Stadium. I can think of only a couple of times in all my years of seeing games at the Astrodome/Minute Maid Park that they didn't have some minor local celebrity or at least a church group lined up to perform the National Anthem live. Seems kinda lazy on the part of the Yankees to only present a recorded version of it.

I did do a little funky dance to Outkast's "Hey Ya!", which directly followed "Take Me Out to the Ball Game."

boldbury, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

Theory one: Giambi knew his positive amphetamine test was about to go public, so he figures it's a good time to (sort of) make an apology for 'doing that stuff'.

Theory two: Because the powers that be are unhappy with Giambi for going to the press and, uh, I guess dragging MLB through the mud, they leaked the positive result to punish him.

G00blar, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

A-Rod pulling some little league bullshit:

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070531&content_id=1996569&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 31 May 2007 07:04 (eighteen years ago)

Haha fuck what's wrong with that guy?

Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

Part of me wants to kind of like A-Rod because I love rooting for the underdog on some level and everyone is so hard on the guy and then he gets that hurt puppy look, but jeez he's such a dick.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 May 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

the $250 million dollar underdog...

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 31 May 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

i used to kinda feel bad for all the booing he got too.
this is no longer the case, however.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 31 May 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

i mean - what a douche - in that article he compaired his yelling into Howie's ear to Hill stealing home the night before.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 31 May 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

"the $250 million dollar underdog..."

Yeah I mean obv. it's pretty weird, but to hear people talk about A-Rod sometimes you'd swear the guy and that contract was Mike Hampton or Don Dreifort or something as opposed to one of the best infielders ever.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 May 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

I'll be rooting for him (to be drilled in the gullet).

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 31 May 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

How is this different from the hidden ball trick?

milo z, Thursday, 31 May 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

Because trying to catch the ball and someone runs up behind you and yells "MINE" or "I GOT IT" is different than getting caught not paying attention to who has the ball?

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 31 May 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

The yelling move was bush, sure, but ultimately, it's up to the fielder to make the play regardless of distractions (cf. intracompany softball games where one team is full of Pete Rose wanna-bes & the other is the Washington Generals), just as it's up to the baserunner to pay attention to where the ball is & what the game situation is (cf. hidden ball trick victims, Lonnie Smith).

Doesn't mean his Rodness doesn't deserve a high hard one, tho. Also, John McDonald needs to STFU & save the grizzled gritty no-hit infielder schtick for an NL team.

David R., Thursday, 31 May 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

The reaction to this would be much different if he hadn't already set a precedent for beer league infield etiquette.

mattbot, Thursday, 31 May 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

Next time, he's gonna pull hair.

David R., Thursday, 31 May 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

"How is this different from the hidden ball trick?"

Um because it's potentially illegal.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 May 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

ANYWAY: I, being a Red Sox dork, have taken perverse pleasure in watching the Yankees flail haplessly over these past 2 months, mostly because of the combination of woe-is-me sadsackery (cf. Morbs quoting Sterling) & it's-like-1978 cockeyed optimism. I'm totally flirting with bad karma by doing this, but WHATEVER.

David R., Thursday, 31 May 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

Alex (MINE), how is it (MINE) almost (HAH) illegal?

Leee, Thursday, 31 May 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

John McDonald needs to STFU & save the grizzled gritty no-hit infielder schtick for an NL team.

ehh?

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 31 May 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

"Alex (MINE), how is it (MINE) almost (HAH) illegal?"

I'm not sure on the rule exactly, but there was some inference by Keith Law in his ESPN chat this morning that A-Rod yelling "it's mine" in the fielder's ear could reasonably be construed as interference or hinderence by the base-runner of the fielder's ability to make a play on a batted ball. Now whether A-Rod did that or how that rule is interpreted might make that inapplicable in this case, but it certainly more of a legal grey area than the "hidden ball trick" which is definitely an established legal part of the game.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 May 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

If Eckstein would have pulled the trick that A-Rod did last night, they would be calling it gamer genius. That hard slide Rodriquez had against the Red Sox a few games back was a bit much, but I like tricks like the one he pulled last night.

earlnash, Thursday, 31 May 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

sanskrit, Friday, 1 June 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

Thermo: "Toronto shortstop John McDonald and Gibbons both addressed Rodriguez's actions as the All-Star stood at third base, trying to stifle a grin, but A-Rod said he wasn't able to hear what the comments referred to."

David R., Friday, 1 June 2007 02:00 (eighteen years ago)

The yelling move sounds totally kosher to me, and I'd totally fuck him if he wasn't a Republican.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 1 June 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

if an ILB sacred cow like Julio Franco had pulled this off on A-Rod, you people would have your own thread gloating about it

totally shady move, love it

sanskrit, Friday, 1 June 2007 03:09 (eighteen years ago)

julio franco just sticks his butt out, don't act like you don't like it.

hstencil, Friday, 1 June 2007 08:01 (eighteen years ago)

"Illegal yelling" my ass, I've never heard of a verbal (i.e. non-physical) action on the field being called "interference". Maybe the next time an infielder yells "c'mon let's get the next guy, let's throw strikes" after a base hit then someone should invoke the ARod precedent and claim that the noise constitutes verbal intent to distract the runner or hitter and should be called a balk or interference or whatever. And anyone who claims this is more bush league than the hidden ball trick or infielders pretending to turn a double play with a runner on first after a clean single to right is simply kidding themselves.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 1 June 2007 13:05 (eighteen years ago)

Leee, Friday, 1 June 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

I was more wondering why MacD should "save his shtick" for a nl team.

Because I can't stands no-hit Eckstein clones in the run-scoring paradise that is the AL, & only folks like LaRussa & Hurdle (what covet such gritty intangibles to such a degree that a non-Bengie Molina & Jamey Carroll get regular playing time) should be allowed to play such things.

--Giants shortstop Omar Vizquel

"I don't blame him. I would have done it, too. I don't care what people say. Why not do it? You have to do everything to win games."
--Ozzie Guillen, White Sox manager.

"Sometimes it happens in the heat of the moment. It's not like pimpin' a home run. You don't stand there and watch them. Obviously, Alex Rodriguez has been around the game a long time. That play, it's not as firm as the other unwritten rules."

Damon hits liner down LF line, kid with glove in first row (the prick) leans over and scoops it up. As Jeter comes up, cut to kid being escorted upstairs and out by US Cellular security for interfering with play.

Paul O'Neill: "That kid lasted one batter, and paid a lotta money for that ticket... At least in New York, they rough him up a little then put him back in the seats."

(Joe Girardi cooncurs that interfering is "a natural instinct").

Michael Kay: "I wouldn't reach over, as a fan... They make the announcement before every game. I follow orders."

O'Neill: "I'd rather take a beating then miss the rest of the game."

Because he's a douchenozzle.

See also: proclaiming Shields' start a failure after 10+ pitches ("he just doesn't look comfortable out there") (I GUESS HE SAW SOMETHING); proclaiming that a 380-390 OBP is "average" (& deflecting Al's follow-up re: Melky's 330 OBP leading off); trying to use his Centerstage skills to get Al to say something interesting re: the supposed Leiter / Kazmir controversy.

WTF:

[Jeter and Posada] decided they wanted to take a steam, which was very unusual for the two of them to take a steam because I had never seen them go in the steam room. When they went into the steam room, I was cleaning up things around the bathroom area, which is inside where the steam room and everything is. I opened the door not knowing they were in there and caught them interacting with one another. They in turn screamed at me to close the “F-ing” door and then later on came over to me and said, “You didn't see what you saw.” So I said, fine. I left it at that.

OK don't mind me killing time while pokering online but Ken Singleton needs to lay off the Pinstripe Punch. He made a point of noting that tonight's Yankee lineup features six homegrown players tonight (seven yesterday), & that it's evidence that the Yankees aren't actually buying their lineup. Of course:

- he's counting Matsui as homegrown LOL
- starting Andy Phillips & Melky Cabrera (& Slam-Dunc) isn't exactly a sign of organizational strength (but why let that get in the way of an off-the-mark point)

David R., Wednesday, 25 July 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

I don't get why they traded Proctor for a utility infielder.

earlnash, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

Betemit is pretty decent. He's not having his best year, though.

Proctor wasn't exactly lights out this year. Replacing him with Joba (hypothetically) can only improve their chances.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

Proctor's never really been lights out - last year was his one truly effective year, and Joe's been beating him silly (to the point that he's been about as effective of late as your run of the mill mop-up dude). Proctor is the fungible reliever poster boy.

Meanwhile, Betemit's now the best Yankee bench guy by far (sorry Shelley), is having a fine year aside from his average, and he's only 27 - he could potentially take over for A-Rod next year, if Steinbrenner doesn't make w/ the cash.

Of course, what's probably going to happen is Torre's going to give Betemit one or two chances (barring an injury), & if he takes a really bad 0fer, or makes a key error, he'll get buried & the Miguel Cairo Experience will steal his ABs.

David R., Wednesday, 1 August 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

Considering how flaky the Yank pitching was early this year, I don't get why they didn't bring up these other arms. I suppose if you are looking long term, the Betemit could work out, but I thought this was the Yankees who live and die for now. Betemit's pinch hitting looks pretty good.

"Betemit provides manager Joe Torre with the solid offensive option off the bench that he has talked longingly about at times this season. He also is batting .320 (8-for-25) as a pinch hitter this season. He had pinch-hit homers in consecutive games at Atlanta in May."

Clemens booed off mound after allowing 8 runs in 1 2-3 inning vs. White Sox

August 2, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- Roger Clemens was booed off the mound Thursday after he allowed eight runs and nine hits in the second inning of the Yankees' game against the Chicago White Sox.

Only three of the runs were earned. Second baseman Robinson Cano mishandled Jerry Owens' grounder near the bag with one out, and Clemens threw out Darin Erstad at the plate on Alex Cintron's dribbler, but the next four batters all got hits off Clemens before manager Joe Torre replaced him.

It was the shortest outing for Clemens since June 2000, when he lasted just one inning against Boston. He hadn't allowed this many runs since a game in August 2003, when all nine runs he gave up were earned.

Making his last start before turning 45, Clemens pitched a perfect first inning before the White Sox got to him with a series of singles and doubles that eluded Yankees fielders. When Torre replaced him with left-hander Mike Myers, the fans at Yankee Stadium booed loudly, but the boos faded to polite applause by the time the Rocket had trudged to the dugout.

The Yankees trailed 8-0 when Clemens left, putting him in line for his sixth loss in 11 starts.

johnny crunch, Monday, 6 August 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

Times:

Before yesterday’s game, Alex Rodriguez said he had not spoken to the fan who caught his 500th home run Saturday, identified as 29-year-old Walter Kowalczyk. “It’s his ball,” Rodriguez said. “Obviously I would love to have the ball.” The Yankees’ director for media relations, Jason Zillo, said the Yankees offered Kowalczyk a cornucopia of autographed equipment from Yankees past and present. “He said, ‘I need to sleep on this,’ ” Zillo said. Zillo added that the Yankees planned to give the helmet Rodriguez wore during the at-bat to the Hall of Fame. Rodriguez said he kept his uniform (unwashed) and the lineup card. He joked that if his 500th homer had come last season, when his statistics were down, the fan would have thrown it back. When Rodriguez was stuck on 499 home runs, the home fans embraced him, standing and cheering during his at-bats. Asked if their response might affect his decision on whether to opt out of his contract after the season, he said, “That’s two different things.”

The car bringing Cynthia Rodriguez, Alex’s wife, to Yankee Stadium was just parking when she heard the radio call of home run No. 500.

“I ran out of the car and saw him cross home plate,” said Mrs. Rodriguez before begging off any further interviews. “It’s typical of me, I miss all the good home runs.”

Fucking Yankees, Reports Nation
August 16, 2007 |
BOSTON—Moments after the New York Yankees continued a month-long stretch that has seen them climb from the bottom of the AL East to pull within a once unfathomable four games of the first-place Red Sox by defeating the Baltimore Orioles Monday night, stunned and enraged baseball fans across America took a moment to shake their heads in disbelief and curse dejectedly at the relentless inevitability of Yankee glory.
"Fucking Yankees," said Marshfield, MA resident and longtime Red Sox fan Lawrence Broberg, echoing the sentiments of thousands of men and woman across the nation. "Every year. Every goddamn year."
The Yankees, coming off a decisive three-game sweep of the Central-leading Indians, have won nine out of their last 10 games, catapulting them to the top of the wild-card standings, restoring the team's infuriating confidence, and instilling a sinking sense of impending misery among all non-Yankee fans.
"It's like they can't lose," said Connecticut resident Gerry DiCenzo, who could only watch helplessly as the Yankees overcame a late Orioles rally to win their fourth straight. "They literally cannot lose. Suddenly no one can beat the Yankees. The Red Sox suck. The Orioles suck. Everyone sucks. Everyone suddenly sucks when they play the Yankees."
"Unbelievable," DiCenzo added. "Un-fucking-believable."
Sparked by the recent returns of phenom starter Phil Hughes and slugger Jason Giambi, the Yankees have their full roster healthy and together for the first time since April, which fans around the world have solemnly realized is perfect timing for the stretch run.
"It seems like every time the [sports ticker comes up, they're winning 10-1," said Chicago resident Jeremy k*ll*an. "You knew this was going to happen. You knew. Right when they got Clemens back, you fucking knew."
"Every time," k*ll*an continued. "Every time with this fucking team. It's the same damn thing every time. You just, they never go away. You can't give them an inch. You cannot give them one inch."
"And Jeter…" k*ll*an added, watching as the Yankee shortstop drove home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth with a softly tapped ball that barely dribbled past the pitcher's mound. "Fucking Jeter."
As the Yankees remain hot in August, the team continues to rely on GM Brian Cashman's strategy of stockpiling cheap, young pitching and assembling a group of talented role players to surround the team's superstars. In recent weeks, rookie reliever Joba Chamberlain and newly acquired utility man Wilson Betemit have stepped up and delivered in clutch situations, much to the frustration of nearly everyone.
"You got fucking Abreu all of a sudden going 3 for 4 every night," Boston citizen Mark Baker said of the Yankees' recent surge. "Fucking Giambi's back. A-Rod's hitting 500 fucking home runs a night. Posada, that bastard. You got Matsui, who's a Red Sox killer. Then there's Shelley Duncan, who no one even heard of till three weeks ago. Guy never hit a home run in his life, he puts on pinstripes and suddenly he's Babe fucking Ruth."
"And this Melky Cabrera guy," Baker added. "Where did this fucking guy come from? Him and Cano. They got guys coming out of the fucking woodwork."
"Fucking Yankee fans must be loving this," said New York resident and avid Mets fan Dave Julian, muting the Yankee broadcast to temporarily silence the grating sound of Yankee cheers. "The smug fucks. And those Yankee announcers. Why don't they root a little harder? They make me sick. Michael Kay. Bet Steinbrenner's laughing it up. Bought himself another fucking championship."
Although the Yankees' schedule becomes tougher in the coming month, with multiple series against the Tigers, Angels, Red Sox, and Mariners, most baseball fans have resigned themselves to the fact that the season is "pretty much fucking over."
"What the fuck can you do?" said Detroit citizen Terry Grey. "Every call. The Yankees get every break, the bounces all go their way. It's luck. They're lucky. They're so fucking lucky."
"Stupid," Grey added. "It's all stupid. Why play the whole fucking season if this is what's always going to happen?"
Despite the mixture of anger, resentment, and disbelief that has surfaced across the country during the Yankees' recent hot streak, most fans have been able to take some solace in the fact that the Yankees will be eliminated by the Angels in the first round of the playoffs.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

Joe Sheehan went to the same "JOBA!" game Thermo & I did:

I’m not sure even the opening chords of “Enter Sandman” inspire what I heard yesterday. Joba Chamberlain has been in the major leagues for two weeks, and he already has heard 50,000 people chant his name on the game’s greatest stage. The energy that ripped through the ballpark during his appearance, the way the crowd embraced and enhanced the moment, the way Chamberlain rose to the occasion with his powerful right arm… a baseball season creates memories along the way, and this is one that I’ll replay for years to come.

Chamberlain is perfectly suited for this role at this point in his career. He has two great pitches, a mid-90s fastball that moves and a slider that’s tighter than, say, K-Rod’s. His command of both has been excellent so far (he’s walked just two men in those seven innings), and he hasn’t had any problems adjusting to a relief role, albeit a well-protected one. It remains to be seen how Chamberlain will react if used in the middle of an inning, or to make three appearances over four days, the kind of usage that high-leverage relievers endure in the postseason. The Yankees are serving two masters right now, the demands of a pennant race and the need to recast their roster for the 2008-2012 seasons. Using Chamberlain in a way that is true to both is arguably Joe Torre’s greatest challenge over the next six—or more—weeks.

"Kelvim Escobar (14-6) earned the win for the Angels, the only AL team with a winning record against the Yankees in the regular season (61-54) since Joe Torre became New York's manager in 1996.
Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia has a 38-22 record against the Yankees. The Angels eliminated the Yankees in the first round of the playoffs in 2002 and 2005."

Sean Henn NEGLECTED

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

The comments Moose made after the game are like the exact reason I hate the Yankees. He was completely right in saying "who is going to replace me" because there likely isn't a good option on the team or in the minors. But Yankees veterans always seem to assume an air of irreplaceableness, that there isn't anyone who could take their jobs. To me, this is the negative side of veteran players, this assumption that they are more valuable than young players by default.

It's the same problem on the Dodgers with guys like Luis Gonzalez, a nice guy with delusions regarding his continued value.

And this is why I think the Steinbrenner model (tons of overpaid vets) doesn't work very well, and why I don't like Joe Torre's management style. When you have a team that has only a few veterans, a manager who over-respects his veterans seems classy: but when your team is almost entirely old, overpaid veterans, deferring to them at the expense of cultivating your young players creates at atmosphere of undue favoritism, I think. I think that's what Sheffield was trying to get at, but incorrectly called it "racism" when it's really just favoritism and cronyism.

I still think the Yankees are a good team, and won't be surprised if they make the playoffs, but they get a lot more energy and passion from guys like Shelly Duncan and Melky Cabrera than they do from guns-for-hire like Moose, Clemens, Damon, Giambino, etc.

I don't know, this is somewhat poorly thought out. Apologies in advance.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

There is something to what you say, but Mussina has not seemed like one of those guys in the past (perhaps because he's never looked this terrible before). Since Hughes is in the rotation and they don't seem inclined to start Joba, who IS going to replace him, esp with a year to go on his deal?

Rob Neyer just said in his chat that they should hope for 4 decent innings from Moose's next start and use the post-Sept 1-callup bullpen.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

Note to NYY: playing the "OMG WE SCORED" music when the run scores in the 1st inning on a groundout is kinda pathetic.

Run-scoring doubles, tho, feel free to play that "theme."

David R., Tuesday, 28 August 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

I have only followed Moose's decline in the stat sheets, but it looks like whatever he used to use to strike out batters is not there this year. Clemens K numbers have also slid this year.

I think Luis Gonzales might be a decent pickup for the right team heading into the playoffs, especially if the Dodgers are going to go with Kemp and Loney down the stretch. Gonzales isn't what he was for a couple of years in Arizona, but he has not been terrible this season. The Dodgers should ship Gonzo across town to the Angels for a player to be named later.

earlnash, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

polyphonic, I agree. I was impressed by the way Torre handled Girardi's transition of duties over to Posada, finding the right mix of playing time and being explicit about what was going on. It doesn't seem like that vibe happens too much these days.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

On Joba's rules:

Does Kennedy in Mussina's spot really give them a better chance than Chamberlain? Rules are made to be broken, and the Joba Rules are just asking to be torn up and thrown out with all the other garbage Torre has had to deal with this season.

"I can't do that, because we're talking about someone who's going to be a starter for this organization," Torre said. "Plus, the rules were made up by someone I have a lot of respect for."

Where "a lot of respect for" == "a lot of paychecks from."

mattbot, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

"Compromise a young man's health": is there really something to that, or is that a weak defense of not starting Joba?

How is starting more stressful than needing to be on from pitch one with no margin of error?

Andy K, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

I don't understand that reasoning either.

As far as workload is concerned, Joba's pitched just under 100 innings so far this year. 118 2/3 at Nebraska in 2005 is his career high.

mattbot, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

What are these rules they're on about?

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

OK - I found something about it (searching "yankee rules" turned up alot of junk to slog through):

In case you don't know the 'Joba Rules,' they are as follows. No appearances on consecutive days, at least one day off for each inning pitched, and no appearances of more than 2 innings.

and no growing mullets, van dykes or styled back hair.

ok I added the last one myself.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

A lot of pitchers must've thrown more innings during high school years. Regular HS season, summer ball, possibly fall ball -- that's up to (or slightly over) seven innings each week for 4.5-7 months. It's odd to hear "This is the first season in which _______ has had to throw over 100 innings, so they need to closely monitor him." _______ might've been throwing that much as early as age 12.

IN MY DAY WE DIDN'T HAVE THESE NAMBYPAMBY PITCHCOUNTS, EITHER.

Andy K, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

but as we know, pitching is harder and more stressful now. (I'm hoping to tell Bob Feller that at next year's SABR convention in Cleveland and watch him keel over.)

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

Daniel (Tampa): The Joba Rules: Personally I think they should be thrown out the window as the season comes to a close. Your thoughts?

Will Carroll: Good lord no. Maybe in the last week if things are THAT close, but they're there because no one trusts Joe Torre not to Quantrill the poor kid.

C'mon. Tek, maybe, but Youks was sure in the box.

Chamberlain's a little punk. Bring it, Yanks.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 31 August 2007 10:10 (eighteen years ago)

sort of? that 5 game sweep last year doesn't totally count as they seemed adrift without an anchor when varitek was injured.

jhøshea, Thursday, 6 September 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

also i am really sick of this "joba"

yes network is sooo gay for him they show him hanging out in the bullpen so many times every game. if he's not pitching that day then they go all retard talking abt the "joba rules". if he might pitch then then theyre all oh just wait til joba gets here then yr so dead. then some times they go oh look at joba talking to roger just soaking it all up you cant have a better teacher than that. they should make him stand around in monument park so everyone can admire and genuflect fulltime ffs

jhøshea, Thursday, 6 September 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

Mike Mussina (Palo Alto, CA): HI Mr. Ma its, good to talk to you. I was wnodering if you had advise to me abuot, how to pitch beter? My contarct says, I have to pitch next year too? YIkes!

Jeff Ma: I think it might be a good idea for you to go the way of Rick Ankiel. I hear you were a good hitter in college. Work your way back up. The Yanks could use someone to play first

Dr Morbius, Friday, 7 September 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

AA Trenton had the best record (83-59) and won the Eastern League championship.

High-A Tampa had the best record overall in the Florida State League (83-56) but missed the playoffs because they didn't win their division in either half-season.

Class A Charleston (South Atlantic League) didn't win anything but were 78-62.

Short-Season Staten Island had the second-best record in the NY-Penn League (47-28).
