when i first moved to chicago, i didn't really feel like i could choose because between the cubs and the white sox because i don't have that native chicago authenticity, so i just casually root for both teams. but maybe now that i've been here 6 years i should just pick a side and stick with it.

Polyphonic OTM. What was your local team before you moved? Might be nice to keep a bit of home with you in that way.

Or, answer b) anything but Cubs.

I've lived in the Chicago area for 30 years, and the only time I've really been fiercely partial to one team over the other was in 1989, when I decided to be a Cubs fan (and lucky for me since they won the NL East that year). But then 1991 rolled around, and the Sox had bad-ass black uniforms and a hot-shit semi-rookie named Frank Thomas, and so I got on board that train instead (which paid off nicely when they won their division two years later). Now I just root for both. I rooted for the Cubs in 2003 and the Sox in 2005. If I'm honest, I maybe slightly prefer the Cubs, just because I know more people who are ardent Cubs fans (I shared an office a few years ago with a guy who'd put on Hughes/Santo radio broadcasts on game days), but I bear no ill will toward the Sox, even when they're facing the Cubs in interleague games.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

This should settle things:

White Sox / Cubs divide = Cubs fans are racist, jockish, classict, yuppie, drunken, gang-raping, bandwagoning, ignorant, front-running, and largely rich and monied pricks and bimbos who didn't give one good god damn about the stupid baseball team until it was force-fed to them by the Tribune media monopoly, and until the neighborhood got gentrified (a gentrification process that will admittedly eventually happen to the South Side neighborhood in which the Sox reside; just has not quite yet). It's a class of fans largely made up of boorish white immigrants from various lame state schools around the midwest, who came to Chicago for their first "big job" in a "big city" and just looove hanging out at Cubs games because it's a glorified beer garden.

These dolts are continually raped by the Tribune corporation for the sheep that they are. The recent ticket-scalping scandal (the "world's greatest newspaper" basically operates its own licensed ticket scalping operation in which it allocates tickets to be resold at exorbitant prices to the sheep) is just another in a long line of "grab yer ankles" practices orchestrated by the "trib".

White Sox fans are decent, hard-working, multi-ethnic, blue-collar people who have lived in the city of Chicago for generations, with a real respect for the history of the game and their team.

That's about it.

Following the Cubs really only ends in misery or drunkenness. I will give Dusty Baker some credit, I think he was the one that kind of led to the Cubs lovable losing being fun coming to an end. Cubs fans seem to take the losing a bit more personal these days.

All that and that recent World Series Pennant flying on the south side probably does change the schadenfreude of your average Sox fan, but those folk seem to have a chip on their shoulder about not getting much credit or love.

I grew up watching a ton of baseball on WGN on cable in the 80s, so I have saw hundreds of games by both teams and have been to see both teams twice (including a trip to Old Commiskey which to me looked like some MLB park being run by county park's rec).

Now you want to talk about some baseball fans that have some freaking angst these days, talk to some die-hard Reds fans. That is a miserable lot who hate their situation and can only pine for something that is LONG LONG gone and their favorite uncle did a stint in the joint.

perhaps a different angle on this is to view the teams through their home stadiums:
wrigley field is historic (1914), romantic, surrounded by roof seating, and falling apart. there is no parking lot in which to tailgate so that portion must be done at a bar of which there are many within spitting distance.
us cellular field is newish (2003), has a rain room and other stuff for kids (batting, fielding, base running), has a ample parking lot in which to tailgate and shockingly few bars (though many traintracks) nearby.
i am not sure if that helps to draw any conclusions

Voted 'Cubs' - we need all the help we can get (and no, not all of us are bad). I enjoy attending one or two Sox games a season, but dang if the designated hitter AL rule not piss me off to no end. All people on field should bat - plain and simple.

BlackIronPrison, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 18:49 (fifteen years ago)

the immediate wrigley field area (1-2 block radius) isn't for everyone, but i like it ok enough. the area beyond that is pretty cool, lots of good shit to check out. comiskey is a decent park but also suffers from being the worst of the new wave of ballparks. iirc it was the first new stadium in some time when it was built, and everyone was pretty excited about it, but then shortly thereafter the orioles opened up camden yards and i think folks were wondering why the sox couldn't have built a really nice park like that instead of something that now appeared to be generic.

('_') (omar little), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

Skydome came a couple of years before New Comiskey, NC was the last of the non-retro parks.

Konerko's bare-handed catch is pretty impressive too since I could easily see being "what the fuck why is the ball coming from there"?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Monday, 5 April 2010 21:10 (fifteen years ago)

great play but let's be honest:

doesn't buerhle's path to ball interfere with the batter slightly?

only in yr mind imo. basically the same psychological effect as a 2b bluffing the runner @ 2nd.

prob not a plus for you n/a, but sox park has the BEST. CORNDOGS. EVER. trying to get my co-worker to switch over to the dark side, because she doesn't "seem" like a "cubs fan" y'know?

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Monday, 5 April 2010 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

They also have veggie dogs. Wrigley only has shitty veggie burgers.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 5 April 2010 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

both teams sweeped their weekend series against pretty good teams! (cubs vs. brewers, white sox vs. mariners)

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 26 April 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)

for cubs fans, that was essentially winning the world series

i would not consider the mariners "pretty good"!

I know they haven't been doing that great so far but weren't they expected to do well this season? Anyways, I think the White Sox will take their wins where they can get them at this point.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

they were. but not not by me.

the W Sox tho - i was (and am) expecting a good year.

"chicago baseball sucks, be a fan of some other team" was obviously the correct answer (at least for this season)

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 11 June 2010 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

be a fan of the kane county cougars

mookieproof, Friday, 11 June 2010 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

cubs vs. white sox this weekend in the battle for who sucks slightly less

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 11 June 2010 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

Heckuva job, Peavy.

cubs making the 2010 white sox look like the 2005 white sox

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 11 June 2010 21:02 (fifteen years ago)

so regional sports difference are nothing native to chicago. but when i realized that hockey loving cubs and white sox fans might come together to celebrate the blackhawks.. that kind of threw me.

i think i'm going to try just venomously despising the cubs this season, just for a change of pace

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 25 February 2011 00:39 (fourteen years ago)

Despise them both. Both worthless. Just ignore them.

Funye West! (u s steel), Sunday, 6 March 2011 17:22 (fourteen years ago)

Now you want to talk about some baseball fans that have some freaking angst these days, talk to some die-hard Reds fans. That is a miserable lot who hate their situation and can only pine for something that is LONG LONG gone and their favorite uncle did a stint in the joint.

so otm

Have you been to any games this year?

Jeff, Thursday, 30 August 2012 19:17 (thirteen years ago)

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 30 August 2012 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

I've only been to 1 cubs and 2 sox games. Pretty much only go when I get free tickets.

Damn straight! Love seeing Cubs sweep the Sox last night. Only hope Garza stays (it seems like he will - his family likes it here).

I'd figure considering how Chris Sale has handled some club house issues, he's probably not a student of the enlightenment. Dude probably knows how to setup a wicked compound bow.
