Neyer:
"Purely in terms of value, the Mets have given up something for nothing.
Brian Stokes is nobody's idea of a star, but he's cheap and he's got a 3.82 ERA in the National League.
Gary Matthews essentially forced Bill James to invent Loss Shares.
Yes, that's a joke. Bill started thinking about Loss Shares long before Matthews signed his $50 million contract with the Angels. But according to Wins Above Replacement, in the first three years of that five-year deal, Matthews has been worth negative $5.2 million.
Perhaps I was too kind. One might argue that the Mets just gave up something for less than nothing."

In one instance, the Mets were a player’s first choice, an agent said, but he was one or two down on the Mets’ pecking order – a phrase used by another agent – and the player and the agent weren’t going to wait for the Mets to deal with them. They went elsewhere.
Another agent said that Omar Minaya, the Mets’ general manager, told him at the winter meetings in December that the Mets would address their catching need in January. “How can they wait and be sure what will be there?” the agent asked.

I'm graspin' at straws, like this month-old C Kahrl item:
Claimed LHP Jay Marshall on waivers from the Athletics. [1/8]
As things stand at present, Pat Misch is the leading candidate to get the second lefty's slot in the pen, which is another way of saying that you can be absolutely sure that they're going to take a look at ground-pounding submariner who totally subdued southpaws for Sacramento last season, limiting them to .179/.207/.226. He also generated a GB/FB ratio of 2.7, not that he has cause to fear flying things in Investment Banking Bandits Ballpark. For situational fun and some upside, this was a nifty little waivers snag by Omar Minaya, one that might buy back the roster spot at the end of camp if Marshall outduels Misch for the job.

Jose Reyes linked to Canadian doctor nailed in HGH trafficking bust:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/more/02/27/hgh.investigation/index.html?cnn=yes&hpt=T2
― ✌.✰|ʘ‿ʘ|✰.✌ (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 28 February 2010 03:44 (fifteen years ago)
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Mets shortstop Jose Reyes said Sunday he met with federal investigators last week regarding a Canadian doctor accused of selling an unapproved drug.
Dr. Anthony Galea is facing four charges in his country related to the unapproved drug known as Actovegin, which is extracted from calf's blood and used for healing. His assistant also has been charged in the U.S. for having HGH and another drug while crossing the border in September.
Galea is known for using a blood-spinning technique -- platelet-rich plasma therapy -- that is designed to speed recovery from injuries. Besides Reyes, he has also treated Tiger Woods and several other professional athletes.
"They just asked me basically how I met the guy and stuff like that and what he put in my body," Reyes said. "I explained to them what he was doing. ... I don't worry about anything because I didn't do anything wrong."
SI.com reported Saturday night that federal officials have told several athletes to expect grand jury subpoenas in the case. The Web site cited three anonymous sources familiar with the investigation.
The New York Times reported in December, citing anonymous sources, that the FBI opened an investigation into Galea based in part on medical records found on his computer relating to several professional athletes.
Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said the team was aware of the situation, and manager Jerry Manuel said he isn't worried about it becoming a distraction.
Reyes said he met with investigators for about 45 minutes at the Mets' spring facility after they contacted him Thursday morning. One of his agents, Chris Leible, also was present.
The Daily News of New York was the first to report Reyes had met with investigators.
Reyes, who missed much of last season with right leg problems, said he spent five days in Toronto in September and was treated by Galea three times. The shortstop was asked by investigators if he used HGH.
"They asked me if he injected me with that. I say 'No,' " Reyes said. "What we do there, basically, he took my blood out, put it in some machines, spin it out and put it back in my leg. So I explained to them that."
Reyes said he felt better for a while after the treatment but his leg still didn't respond when he tried to push it. He had surgery in October to clean up some scar tissue remaining from a torn hamstring tendon behind his right knee.
Galea was arrested Oct. 15 after a search warrant was executed at the Institute of Sports Medicine Health and Wellness Centre near Toronto. He is charged with selling Actovegin, conspiracy to import an unapproved drug, conspiracy to export a drug and smuggling goods into Canada.

Francouer has encouraged Wright to play more golf this spring training. Francouer also can take away some of the massive media responsibilities from Wright and get him away from thinking baseball 24-7.
When the two are hitting in the cage, Francouer keeps it fun. The outgoing Francouer is good at seeing the big picture and wants to help Wright to be more relaxed.
“Let’s have fun, let’s play golf, let’s enjoy ourselves,” Francouer explained. Francouer then told the story about how he took Wright golfing last year during the season on an off-day. Wright complained, saying that he does not like to play golf during the season. Francouer guaranteed that Wright would get some hits the next game if only he went out for a little golf therapy. The next game, Wright got three hits.

One for Crabbypants, one for me:
The Mets won seven straight May 4-10 last year. 1B Carlos Delgado went on the DL May 11 and was lost for the season.

they're 4 games over .500 but in the next 30 days they have 12 games against PHI, NYY and SF (along with games vs. typical NLEast tripe so there's that) but I'm thinking they will be .500 by this point next month.

My first thought was, who's the managerial genius who left his starter in the game after he gave up a bases loaded walk to a 170-year old pitcher? Although I guess they still had the lead at that point and bringing in a fresh pitcher to face the top of the lineup with the bases loaded is a tough assignment.
This is really just an excuse to tell the story about how Cito Gaston let Pat Hentgen give up 12 runs in 8 innings in 1997 (when he was the reigning Cy Young winner) and said after the game that he didn't take him out because he thought he owed it to him. Santana's outing reminded me of that and I never get tired of bagging on Cito.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 3 May 2010 18:53 (fifteen years ago)
iirc santana got similarly pwned by the Philz and the Yanx in back to back starts last season.... well not exactly walking the #9 guy with the bases jacked but more like giving up HRs like free samples at CostCo.

Welp this is kind of a perverted take on his last season where he couldn't hit a HR to save his life... I'm not sure if he's hated so much as people were like wtf happened to this guy; why has his power dwindled to Neifi-like levels and to add insult to injury his whiff-rate spiked. But good to know that he is back and ready to hit some bombs.

Owen (Berkeley)
After being stunned when he signed that 4-year contract and grumbling through the first two years and praying someone would take him off our hands... I've kind of come around on Luis Castillo. He does seem to have an actual talent for blooping little singles. And for some reason he gets walks, which, given his non-existent power, seems tantamount to walking the pitcher, but somehow it happens. Am I delusional or just glass half full?
Rob Neyer (12:24 PM)
The ill-advisedness of Castillo's deal was greatly exaggerated. He's not a bad little player and it's not an immense amount of money.

I perused being a Mets fan for a while, being that Virginia doesn't have a baseball team, and the Mets are an iconic baseball team despite having only two World Series wins. I'm kind of glad I didn't after the late 2000's chokefest.
Do I think they are for real this year? Who knows, it is too early in the season. Besides, the Mets demons are too young to exorcise. Would someone please let the Cubs exorcise this this season if only for the fact that I'm tired of hearing woe-is-me Cubs fans whining about their pathetic existence and drinking themselves to death over it while their spouses stand by, teary-eyed and helpless and wondering why they married such a loser.

Follie Perez was a bigger obstacle to victory today than Lincecum -- who looked decidedly mortal after about 105-110 pitches.
As I've said, kets to Mets' October berth is add Beltran and subtract Perez. (And find some pinch hitters to replace Matthews, Cat and Tatis, good Christ.)

Folly:
He threw only 44 of 98 pitches for strikes Sunday. Only three other pitchers in the last half-century have reached that pitch count while throwing 44 or fewer strikes: Kansas City's Jorge De La Rosa (44 strikes in 98 pitches in 2007), Philadelphia's Scott Ruffcorn (43/99, 1997) and Seattle's Chris Bosio (39/98 in 1995).

Maine has rotator cuff tendinitis.
David Waldstein, NYT, on K-Rod usage issues:
After a tense plane ride back to New York, Manuel crammed all 25 players into his office on Friday afternoon before the beginning of their weekend series against the Yankees and told them to relax and enjoy playing baseball.
But two days after that meeting, the team’s closer, Francisco Rodriguez, and its bullpen coach, Randy Niemann, had to be separated by other relievers in the bullpen on Sunday night during an apparent dispute over how Rodriguez is being used. The confrontation occurred in full view of some of the fans sitting in right field.
Order was quickly restored, and Rodriguez later went into the game and after some dicey moments struck out Alex Rodriguez to earn his eighth save of the season, and his second in two nights, as the Mets held off the Yankees, 6-4, and took the series, two games to one.
Afterward, Francisco Rodriguez said the tussle in the bullpen was just an instance of Mets relievers engaging in some roughhousing.
“We were just fooling around,” he said. “We were just kidding with each other.”
But two people in the Mets organization confirmed that the confrontation between Rodriguez and Niemann was indeed a heated one and might have escalated if other pitchers had not intervened. A third member of the organization said that Rodriguez and Niemann met after the game and apparently patched things up.
At the heart of Sunday night’s incident is the Mets’ heavy reliance on Rodriguez to bail them out of one dangerous situation after another. With his own job on the line, Manuel has felt pressure to win every game he possibly can, even it means stretching Rodriguez’s normal limitations. He has had Rodriguez warm up more than once in the same game in case he is needed before the ninth inning; he has had Rodriguez come into the games where the Mets are still comfortably ahead.

"Once he had doubled, fought through the eighth, I didn't think it would be a good move," Manuel said about Santana continuing. "And Fielder, I think, was seeing him pretty good anyway. I didn't want to chance him to lose that ballgame out there after the way he had performed."
Laboring through an 11-pitch inning and running 180 feet can really take a lot out of a pitcher.

Before the Mets’ 10-4 victory over the Brewers, manager Jerry Manuel was hard-pressed to name a scenario in which he would consider using Perez.“That’s really a tough question,” Manuel said. “(Maybe) extra innings or something like that, but it’s going to be tough to find spots for him.”When told that Manuel’s plan is to save Perez for extra-inning games, one of the Mets players laughed.“What, we need another 20-inning game and then use him after we’ve used all our pitchers and if a position player’s sinker isn’t biting?” the player said.

Original thinker JMan perpetrates ninth walk-off loss by refusing to go to K-Rod; NYT:
When the Nationals loaded the bases with one out in the ninth off Pedro Feliciano, Manuel brought in Igarashi to face the right-handed Zimmerman. Manuel dismissed the idea of using closer Francisco Rodriguez instead of Igarashi in that tense situation.
“Again, that’s not what a closer does,” he said. “That’s not his role. What that is indicative of, all the walk-off losses on the road, that’s indicative of an eighth-inning guy.”

If the Mets are unable to work out a trade for Cliff Lee, they will consider staying with their current rotation and instead try to shore up the bullpen. The Mets will not make a play for Oswalt because they do not want to commit to any player signed beyond this season due to their financial difficulties.

other than krod spectacularly blowing the save (what else is new), home plate ump calls a pitch a ball that looked like a strike, catcher turns around and sez somethin, ump throws a mini temper tantrum which almost looks like hes tossin krod/castro out of the game; ump blows what would have been the winning run by calling the runner tagged out at the plate; ump allows himself 2 be overruled by the 3b ump on a dribbler hit an inch in front of the plate

One night a man had a dream, He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scene he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, One belonging to him and the other to the LORD.
When the last scene flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He notice many times in his life there was only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it happened to be at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it.
"LORD, you said once I decided to follow You, You'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only ONE set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed You the most You would leave me."
The LORD replied: "My son, my precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, When you see only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you."
and take consolation that they couldn't possibly outdo the 1992 team

The New York Mets' annual slide into obscurity (and/or fourth place in the National League East) is already well under way, so it's a bit of a surprise that the Strokes' Julian Casablancas has decided that now is the perfect time to announce his plans to pen a theme song for the team.
Then again, Casablancas has been rather busy as of late, so maybe he hasn't caught the last month of, uh, action.
Anyway, in the new issue of Rolling Stone, Casablancas expressed his desire to write a new TV theme for the Mets, saying that he's overflowing with ideas to spice up their broadcasts.
"I'm totally serious," he says. "I have some ideas, I have to see if they like it. I've got a jar stuffed with songs, all these ideas that are just me humming into a recording device."
Funny, that's exactly how Giuseppe Franco began his partnership with the team too. A spokesperson for the Mets did not respond to MTV News' request for comment on the issue — it's been a pretty busy season for their press department — but Rolling Stone did reach out to SNY broadcaster (and Mets legend) Keith Hernandez to get his take on the situation. And as it turns out, he loves the idea. After all, he's a fan of Casablancas' work (more proof that Keith Hernandez is awesome.)
"As a Strokes fan, I would get a kick out of hearing what Julian can do with the song," Hernandez told the mag. "It could be interesting and I am sure baseball fans, and especially Mets fans, would enjoy hearing it."

Consider that just for next year, Carlos Beltran, Jason Bay, Francisco Rodriguez, Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo make $69 million, which will be about the payroll of the Marlins. If the Mets could just snap their fingers and make those contracts disappear, they would. But they can’t. Instead, the Mets have five of the most unmovable contracts in the majors. The only way to trade any of them would be to either eat a large portion of those pacts or to take back a contract, at the least, equally distasteful.
bay & k rod already being considered unmovable months and one year after being signed is true ineptitude

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Police have charged former Mets pitcher pitcher Ambiorix Burgos with kidnapping and attempted murder after his ex-wife said she was forced to eat rat poison.
Judge Freddy Frias ordered Burgos on Saturday to remain in jail for three months while prosecutors prepare the case.
The 26-year-old is suspected of kidnapping Dilenia Reynoso on Thursday from a prosecutor’s home where she was hiding after allegedly receiving death threats from him.
In 2008, authorities dropped charges against Burgos, who was accused in a fatal hit-and-run involving two women.
Last year, a New York jury found Burgos guilty of assaulting his girlfriend in a hotel near Shea Stadium. He was sentenced to nine months in jail.
Burgos pitched for the Royals from 2005-06. The Mets traded Brian Bannister to Kansas City for Burgos in December 2006. He pitched in 17 games in 2007 and was released by the Mets in December 2008.

“This is not an attractive job unless you want the money. The only person with a worse reputation then Jeff Wilpon in the game is David Samson."—anonymous NL executive. (Joel Sherman, New York Post)
What is so bad about Wilpon? Is it that he undermines his GMs or is it more than that?
― no gut busting joke can change history (polyphonic), Monday, 20 September 2010 20:44 (fifteen years ago)
everything i've heard about the mets front office suggests that wilpon basically makes all the big decisions i.e. free agent signings etc, and leaves minaya to be a figurehead and oversee scouting & operations etc.
also the mets' recent draft history suggests that wilpon isn't budgeting much more than the minimum amount of money for that, which is obviously foolish for a team that spends so much on free agency
― ciderpress, Monday, 20 September 2010 21:05 (fifteen years ago)
Right, but is that really a worse job than GM of the Astros or Orioles or etc.? If anything I would imagine that the next GM might be able to say "Hey, this shit didn't work with the last guy, so let me do things a little differently."
― no gut busting joke can change history (polyphonic), Monday, 20 September 2010 21:11 (fifteen years ago)
What is so bad about Wilpon?
Along w/ Mets' apparently underdeveloped international scouting system, buzz has it that it was the Wilpons (Jeff, I think) who encouraged the media to sandbag the 3 players who didn't go to visit the veterans at Walter Reed Hospital a couple weeks ago. (It was Ollie P, Castillo, and Beltran, all of whom the Mets wd prefer to dump if it wasn't allegedly difficult.)

Keith, have you ever interacted with Jerry DiPoto and what do you think of him as a potential future GM either this year or down the road?
Klaw (1:16 PM)
I've met Jerry and talked to him several times. I think he'd be an excellent choice for a team looking to rebuild its farm system through the draft, and I understand from his (former) colleagues in Arizona that he's a very open-minded guy with a strong interest in using data to increase the effectiveness of his team's scouting efforts. And he's a good guy who people would want to work for.

NEW YORK (AP)—The New York Mets fired manager Jerry Manuel and general manager Omar Minaya on Monday, an expected shake-up of the big-spending ballclub after its second straight losing season.
The Mets said a search is under way for a new GM, who will work with the team to hire a new manager.
“We are extremely disappointed in this year’s results and the failures of the past four seasons,” said chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon, the son of owner Fred Wilpon. “We need to hire a new general manager with a fresh perspective who will transform this club into a winner that we want and our fans deserve.”
Manuel is the seventh manager this season to lose his job. The final guaranteed year of Manuel’s contract expired, and the Mets declined to exercise the club’s option on the deal.
The Mets were 79-83 this year, a disappointing 18 games behind Philadelphia in the NL East despite having an opening-day payroll of $133 million that was the fifth-highest in the majors. They have not been to the playoffs since coming within a game of going to the World Series in 2006.
“Changes like these are never easy, especially when you are dealing with people you like and respect,” Wilpon said.
