Okay, I love read Schilling's blog:

In late January we spoke at length and both decided that if the good Lord found it in himself to keep me healthy I would not retire following the 2007 season. After a short discussion with the kids, who were ecstatic (though a bit put off since we promised them puppies when I retired) it became clear to me that this was the right thing to do.

G00blar, Friday, 23 March 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha, from Rany Jazayerli on BP today:

I have a new favorite candidate for title of “worst contract signed by a player.” This one has no mitigating circumstances. It was signed less than two years ago, on April 19th, 2005, by a veteran pitcher who had already made his millions, and who was a free agent at the time. This pitcher, who was about to complete a three-year deal that paid him a little north of $13 million, agreed to a one-year extension worth 4 million dollars--a one-year deal, and a pay-cut, even though said pitcher had just gone 12-10 with a league-average ERA the year before. At the time he signed the extension, he had started the new season 2-0 with a 1.37 ERA; he would finish 16-12 with a 4.15 ERA.

That information alone is enough to place this contract among the worst ever. Then keep in mind that this pitcher had gone 22-12 the two years before that, with ERAs of 4.09 and 2.81 (the latter was 4th-best in the league). This pitcher was in his 13th major-league season and had never suffered a significant arm injury.

So let’s see…an above-average major league starting pitcher, showing no signs of decline, with a stellar health record, signs a one-year, $4 million deal. About the only good thing we can say is that he only had to wait another year to sign a better contract.

Oh, but if only Tim Wakefield's contract were that. If he had signed a one-year extension in 2005, he would have hit the market again this winter, and even though he went 7-11 with a 4.63 ERA, and suffered an oblique injury that limited him to 140 innings, he undoubtedly would have taken advantage of the wacky market for pitchers this winter, possibly even doubling his salary. Who would you rather have over the next three years: Wakefield or Miguel Batista?

(Wakefield is 40 years old, but in non-knuckleballer years that’s about 35. Charlie Hough threw over 200 innings of league-average ball when he was 45; Phil Niekro was an All-Star at age 45.)

But Wakefield not only signed a 1-year, $4 million deal (with a little over $1 million in incentives), he gave the Red Sox a perpetual option on the contract. I can’t overemphasize how astonishing that is. The Red Sox can keep renewing Wakefield’s contract, one year at a time, for the same salary, from now until forever. In return, Wakefield gets…um, absolutely nothing. The moment he loses it, the Red Sox can cut him, with no buyout and no future contract obligations.

In effect, Wakefield has bonded himself to the Red Sox franchise for the remainder of his career, without being compensated one iota for his allegiance. We used to have a term for this type of contract in the annals of baseball history. What was it…oh yeah, we called it the Reserve Clause.

Wakefield has essentially turned back 35 years of bitterly-fought labor victories by the players’ union. He has signed a one-year contract with a perpetual option to renew. To the best of my knowledge, since the dawn of free agency, no player has signed a comparable contract.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 23 March 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, wasn't his bad year due to the fact that the Sox didn't have a competent catcher (a necessity for a knuckler)? And they had to trade to get Mirabelli back? Help me out, I think I have this wrong.

Steve Shasta, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

you can chalk up a bad year to the catcher? even for a knuckler, that's a stretch.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

Have you ever tried to catch a knuckleball, Dr. Morbsious?

Okay as usual, I have facts and dates messed up. But there is a tiny fraction of truth I speak of:

Upset over Piazza's arrival and his subsequent lack of playing time, Mirabelli requested Padres General Manager Kevin Towers to work out a deal that would send him back to Boston.[1]

Mirabelli was reacquired by the Red Sox on May 1, 2006 in exchange for catcher Josh Bard, minor league pitcher Cla Meredith, and Upset over Piazza's arrival and his subsequent lack of playing time, Mirabelli requested Padres General Manager Kevin Towers to work out a deal that would send him back to Boston.[1]

Mirabelli was reacquired by the Red Sox on May 1, 2006 in exchange for catcher Josh Bard, minor league pitcher Cla Meredith, and $100,000 cash. This reacquisiton occurred because Bard had trouble catching Tim Wakefield's knuckleball. Bard had 10 passed balls in just 7 games. The day that the trade occurred, the Red Sox were to play their first game of the year against their rivals, the New York Yankees, in Fenway Park. It took a private jet and a Massachusetts State Police escort to get Mirabelli to the field in time. His plane from the west coast touched down at Logan Airport at 6:48 pm, he arrived at Fenway Park at 7:00 pm, and took his place behind the plate just in time for Wakefield's opening pitch at 7:13 pm. In an effort to conserve every second possible, the Red Sox sent a uniform along with the police escort for Mirabelli to change into while en route to Fenway Park from Logan Airport. The special glove (which is actually a woman's softball catcher's mitt) which Mirabelli had used in previous years to catch Wakefield had been left in Boston for Mirabelli's replacement; Bard had left it waiting for Mirabelli's arrival. 00,000 cash. Holy shit, four innings isn't that short.

So Papel"Bull"Bon is still the closer, yes? How does that bode for the plan to make him a starter?

Leee, Thursday, 5 April 2007 23:24 (eighteen years ago)

i believe the thinking is that papelbon would be an average starter but an exceptional closer, in the vein of gagne/flash gordon

rps, Thursday, 5 April 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

this offense is pretty timid so far, how many earned runs have they scored?

Steve Shasta, Friday, 6 April 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

in fairness, they DID have to square off against gil meche.

j.q higgins, Friday, 6 April 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

that's gil "GAH" meche to you

i take it back about schilling, last night was a complete 180. we shall see if this jekyll and hyde behavior continues.

fell asleep before i could see paps deliver the final beatown, but it sounds like it was pretty sweet.

agree about offense so far but you have to figure it'll come around. plus lowell's been getting good wood on the ball. i just wonder if coco "only black guy on the club" crisp is actually going to be any good at anything at all. what is up with boston teams, my lord, both the celtics and the red sox for years have had these lillywhite teams, it's crazy.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 9 April 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

By the box score, the offense still sucks but on observation things aren't as dire. Youkilis, Manny, and Drew all hit the ball hard last night right at fielders. On the other hand Lowell, Varitek, and Crisp actually do look like varying degrees of suck at the plate.

Schilling was solid, but had to battle here and there and escaped hard contact once or twice. He should get sharper. Other than the HR his changeup looked legit.

I had forgotten how completely silly Papelbon makes hitters look. Wilkerson and Blalock both acted like they were before a firing squad. Awesome. Definitely no regrets over missing him struggle to keep his pitch count down and make it through 5 innings every few days.

“I came up with the craziness of the Yankees in the seventies—the ‘Bronx Zoo,’ and Sparky Lyle and all of them sitting on cakes without clothes on. Manny was mild compared to what I had been used to.” In Cleveland, I pointed out, Ramirez used to walk into the video room naked to study tapes of pitchers. “Do you understand why I would see that as normal?” Negron said. “He wasn’t sitting on a birthday cake.”

Leee, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

The cop knew who he was,” as Sheldon Ocker, the Indians beat reporter for the Akron Beacon Journal, tells it. “He said, ‘Manny, I’m going to give you a ticket.’ Manny says, ‘I don’t need any tickets, I can give you tickets,’ and reaches for the glove compartment. Then he leaves the scene by making an illegal U-turn and he gets another ticket.”

Tough, tough loss last night. I'm fucking sick of the fact that we've been getting killed by mediocre lefties for about 4 years now. Bright spots include the first ridiculous Wily Mo Pena HR of the year, and Dice-K looking awesome in a dome. Fastball was notably better, both on the radar gun and on TV. Also, Okajima is doing an excellent job--I'm guessing hitters are having a hard time with his delivery. The weird part to me is that he starts off bent over almost as if he's going to deliver sidearm, and then he comes STRAIGHT over the top. That's gotta be hard to pick up.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I noticed that too (Okajima's delivery). It still seems to me that Dice-K's not getting the benefit of the doubt from umpires, which should change as the season moves along. There's just sooo much movement on all of his pitches. Also: Coco Crisp (even when hitting that double) looks totally overmatched at the plate, like he's a little kid let into the dads' game.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 23 April 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

On Friday? Or yesterday? Friday was the right call, regardless of the whole OH NO TORRE LIED nonesense; of course, Mo didn't have a damn thing (either because of the 6-day layoff, or his mojo going AWOL), so it was a bad move. He probably should've entered yesterday's game, too, as much as I loooooooooove Scott Proctor. Then again, Torre's the sort that, w/ his team down 1 & 2 outs w/ the tying run on 1st, would rather have Kevin Thompson hit while Josh Phelps wastes away on-deck. (Torre's also the guy that will pinch-run for his DH w/ Kevin Thompson after getting a 4 run lead in the 7th, tho, so clearly he knows better.)

Regardless, the Yankee bullpen's gonna be entering LIMA TIME by the All Star Break if this nonsense keeps up.

David R., Monday, 23 April 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

OTOH, I believe Miller mentioned that every Red Sox starter has gone at least 6 this year, which is a nice change of pace from last year.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

x-post to david r.--

I hope you're right about bullpen usage, but it's been made way easier this year by the fact that everyone in the pen has pitched at least decently, and by the fact that a week or two of no Timlin meant that Tito had to use different guys in high-lev situations. I bet there are a few times Mike would've been out there for the 8th if he hadn't been hurt.

that said I really hope that they continue to mix and match and not settle into a routine. all the bullpen guys have really risen to the occasion and gotten big, big outs, and in a purely speculative sense I could imagine them all thriving on being given important innings without first having to 'gain the manager's trust' or whatever.

call all destroyer, Monday, 23 April 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

Well, that was the biggest problem w/ Theo's attempt to establish the committee his first year - the guys he chose for the pen were shitty and/or hurt more often than not, which lead to big LOLs and bigger boos from fans & (more importantly) the media. If it's happened this year, it's purely by chance, but I think Timlin's injury has allowed it to happen.

Of course, I'm totally wrong about that 7th inning appearance by Papelbon. It was w/ 1 out in the 8th during this game.

David R., Monday, 23 April 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

The FAN host thought bringing Rivera into the 8th Friday sent a "lack of confidence" mssg to Farnsworth et al. Aw, boohoo.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

Because pitching like shit should boost one's morale, and be rewarded w/ high-stress appearances in close games against quality opponents!

David R., Monday, 23 April 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

Well there should be a lack of confidence in Farnsworth, now shouldn't there?

"The great story we were talking about the other night was that famous red stocking that he wore when they finally won, the blood on his stocking," Thorne said to broadcast partner Jim Palmer, the Hall of Fame pitcher, in a conversation that had begun with a discussion of Schilling's blog.

"Nah," Thorne said. "It was painted. Doug Mirabelli confessed up to it after. It was all for PR. Two-ball, two-strike count."

Point #5: Throwing down the gauntlet.

Credit to Schilling for the money and awareness he raises on ALS. If a charity gets a million bucks out of this whole story, that would be a great outcome. But hey, Curt, instead of waiting for takers on a bet, why not just give a million bucks more to ALS? Or even better, ask yourself What Would Jesus Do? He might ask Gary Thorne who his favorite charity was, and give a million bucks to them.

David R., Monday, 30 April 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

"The dreadlocks are part of his body. Thus, if he is hit by a pitch, he would be awarded the base, unless he failed to make an effort to avoid the pitch or was struck by the pitch in the strike zone--in other words, were his hair to intrude upon the strike zone in trying to get out of the way, hanging over the strike zone or such. Also, if tagged out on the bases via a tag or on the hair, he would be out. If he were to be struck on the hair by a batted ball, he would also be ruled out."

Tracer Hand, Friday, 11 May 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

There are few things greater in baseball than a 40-year-old knuckleballer with a sub-2.00 ERA.

Andy K, Friday, 11 May 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

Especially when he's nominally the team's 4th starter! & they're doing this with JD Drew & Lugo mired in a slump, next to nothing from Coco, and Manny being sub-Manny. And the team's DEFENSE! Maybe I'm just a lamer, but every time there's a mid-field pop-up, and I see someone clearly call for it, and the other fielders get out of the way, I get a little giddy.

David R., Friday, 11 May 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

& they're doing this with JD Drew & Lugo mired in a slump, next to nothing from Coco, and Manny being sub-Manny.

See, this is why I'm more excited than usual. OK, so we did just score a bazillion runs off the Jays, but in general this is a hot team that's hot because of great pitching, which (and this is probably wrong) feels more sustainable to me.

G00blar, Friday, 11 May 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

OK, but this (from Cafardo in today's Globe), worries me:

Too early to call the American League East race over? Too early to say this team could run away with it? After they win five of six against the Twins and Blue Jays, how far-fetched is it to say the Red Sox are well on their way to winning this in a landslide?

Dude, relax, please. Yes, it's early.

G00blar, Friday, 11 May 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

Too early to kick the Boston sports media in the balls? Too early to tell the bandwagon jumpers that cover the Red Sox to shut the hell up and stop acting as if one week's worth of games encapsulates the entire season?

David R., Friday, 11 May 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

god wily mo is such shit in the field

i saw him play against the phillies last year, in center field, and in person you really get a feel for just how bad he is - he NEVER gets the right jump, backpedalling when he ought to be racing forward; jumping forward when he ought to have turned his shoulder and sprinted for the wall; he corners like a fuckin VW bus

Joe Sheehan (Morbs' go-to pull-quotee) posted a Baseball Prospectus write-up today praising the Sox for playing the best all-around baseball in the majors to date, & says that with no striking outlier performances (& more than a handful of disappointments), there's no reason the Sox can't continue playing as well as they have.

So, of course, shit will now hit the fan (aside from JD leaving today's game after backing into the outfield wall).

I think it involves cars.

So: matching 14-6 home and away records. Most runs scored (by, um, 1) in the majors. Least runs allowed in the majors. 7-3 in one-run games. 9.5 game lead. BUT: 0-1 in extra innings.

I have as much fun as the next RSN jerk w/ the sadsack schtick that goes (or, more appropriately, WENT) w/ being a Red Sox fan, but:

- they have the 2nd highest payroll in baseball
- they are playing the best ball in the entire majors
- outside of maybe Okajima, no one's performing over their head
- injuries and slumps happen (hi Josh), but this team's poised to roll w/ those punches as well as any team (barring some Oakland-esque epidemic, or someone chopping Manny's / Big Papi's head off)

I'm not going to pull a CHB and give them the division in the middle of May, but they're in a pretty sweet & maintainable position, and if being a real Red Sox fan meaning sitting in the corner with a half-empty glass waiting for the sky to fall, then fuck being real.

This has been my annual FUCK RED SOX NATION rant. Thank you.

david i know, but they ARE playing out of their minds - not individually, but as a team and the worm always turns - how many times and for how long who knows. i agree they're a great team, i mean they are just killin everybody for the most part. there's a feeling of depth and balance. i still think the defense is suspect sometimes and that is the real horror. i've been proven wrong by them before of course. in 2004 i was CONVINCED millar was going to pull a knoblauch or something.

mattymatty2000 (Philly, PA): Simple question, but feel free to give as complex an answer as you want: Are the Red Sox this good?

Nate Silver: Guys that are going to cool off: Lowell (a lot); Youkilis (a little, but he's looking like a real power hitter now); Beckett (a little); Wakefield (a lot); Okajima (a lot).

Guys that are going to heat up: Ramirez (a lot), Crisp (maybe), Drew (probably), Matsuzaka (a little).

Right now they're on pace to win 113 games and I don't think they'll sustain that but they haven't been playing that far above their heads; they've had some hot starts but some cold starts too. I think it's probably a 100-102 win team in terms of true talent level.

I mean are there batters out there that are trying to do something else when they bat (although to be honest I often wonder these days if Jason Kendall has some different agenda.)

Alex in SF, Sunday, 3 June 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

Sometimes you are just trying to get on base. Other times you are just trying to see the ball well and make GOOD contact. Youkilis' approach appears to be hit-based.

Italy has not announced if it will seek their extradition to the Milan trial.

US President George W Bush will arrive in Italy hours after the trial opens.[..]

Italy’s government has asked the country’s highest court to set aside the rendition trial, saying prosecution documents will break state secrecy laws and damage relations with the CIA.[..]

One of the surprise witnesses in the case will be Philip Morse - one of the minority owners of the US baseball team the Boston Red Sox, says the BBC’s Christian Fraser in Rome.

It is alleged that his Gulfstream jet was used by the CIA to fly Abu Omar out of Italy, says our correspondent.

haha I love Tavarez

Tavarez revealed he has been pitching with a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand. "[Josh ] Beckett would be on the DL with this," Tavarez said, showing the blister. Tavarez said he pops the blister and dries it out by rubbing in some Red Bull and ground-up aspirin. [...]

Tavarez on his half-swing, half-bunt hit Saturday night, his first hit since Aug. 24, 2002: "Anything to help this team win. People look at you as a clown, dumb and stupid. People, fans, players, teammates look at you as a clown, as stupid, as a dummy who always does something to make people laugh," he said. "They don't admit the truth and say, 'You know what, the guy who is stupid and a dummy, he's going to make something happen to win. Pain is nothing to him. He'll do something to find a way to win.' And that's me. Dumb like a fox."

BOSTON -- David Ortiz has been playing with a torn meniscus in his right knee since the middle of the 2006 season, the Red Sox slugger revealed Thursday night.

Speaking to reporters after Boston returned from the All-Star break to beat Toronto 7-4, Ortiz said he hurt his knee during batting practice at Yankee Stadium last summer, probably during the series June 6-8. Ortiz said when he twisted his leg to field a bunt, his knee turned but his spike got caught in the netting that protects the grass in front of home plate.

Ortiz said he hasn't needed surgery because the knee is free of inflammation.

"It wasn't anything major," he said. "I just kept playing through it last year. This year, it's been bothering me more than it used to."

Ortiz was limping around after hitting the same knee with a foul ball in the eighth inning Thursday.

"It hurt, but I'm fine," he said.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

this team sucks on more levels than people think. i hope they can hold off the yankees but it's starting to look like they won't be able to.

omar little, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

you compare their lineups and it's not even close, and i'm not sure about this supposed edge the bosox have in pitching. lol @ gagne.

omar little, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 01:52 (eighteen years ago)

Dear Tito Francona:

I'd like to congratulate you on your sterling bullpen usage this past week, as it's probably cost the Red Sox at least 2 games in the standings. In case you've forgotten, you dumb shit:

Friday, September 14: you allow Hideki Okajima to start the 8th inning, the Red Sox up 5 runs. He allows 2 home runs to the 1st two hitters of the evening, and walks the next hitter. Somehow, you're the only person watching this game that realizes Hideki doesn't have "it" this evening - I'm thinking unborn babies in Guatemala knew what the fuck was going on. Instead, you play ride-or-die with a guy that's probably running on fumes and you allow him to give up a double to Johnny Damon. Then, instead of using one of the other capable arms in the bullpen, you hit the panic button & go straight to Papelbon, asking him to get 6 outs. That move unexpectedly blew up in Boston's face, but shit happens. However, had you pulled the trigger on HO one or two batters sooner - because giving up 2 HRs back-to-back to like-sided hitters is a pretty good sign you're done - Papelbon or some other worthy pitcher wouldn't have come into a game with the tying run at the plate.

Sunday, September 16th: Despite Curt Schilling having thrown only 70-something pitches through 7 innings, he found himself in a sticky wicket, with 2 guys on base, 2 outs, and Derek Jeter up in a 1-1 game. Sure, it would be nice to have Schilling finish out the inning, but if there's ever a time to go to the closer early - a fresh arm, a hard thrower & arguably your best pitcher - it's now. Instead, Schilling serves up a meatball to Jeter, and the game is now 4-1. You then get leftie Javier Lopez in the game, and (as is his wont) he gives up a double to a left-handed batter. Finally, Manny Delcarmen (a guy that probably should've been in the 8th inning on Friday) gets the final out. It's too late, though - that fat bastard Joba & whats-his-face stave off a Sox rally, and they lose 4-3.

Tuesday, September 19th: In a 2-1 game, Eric Gagne gets 2 outs in the 8th inning, then gives up a walk and a single. Again, this would be a fine time to go to Papelbon (who, coincidentally, hasn't pitched since Friday's 8th inning debacle), but you'd rather stick with a guy that's been nothing but unreliable since arriving in Boston, rather than go to a sure thing to secure the win. Gagne walks the next 2 guys to tie the game, then gives up a 2-run double to slap-hitter-in-training Russ Adams that would've kept the inning going had the Blue Jays not sent anti-speedy catcher Gregg Zaun home for the 3rd out.

Three years ago, I was beside myself in glee w/ the way you managed the bullpen during that improbable comeback against the Yankees. It was a pleasant antidote from Grady Little's (to be kind) dumbshit management of the rotation. As much as I appreciate your Little-esque nostalgia trip this week, I (and I imagine most Red Sox fans) would appreciate it if you could pull your blood-deprived head from out your ass and actually did your goddamn job. Bad enough the MSM is in love with this 1978 LOL meme. If you actually could figure out when and where to use your pitchers, it wouldn't even be an issue and those fuckwit retard Yankees wouldn't be anywhere near the top of the division. Instead, your dipshitty nonsense has brought those fucks withing 2 losses of the goddamn AL East pennant. Please wake the fuck up, or get the fuck out.

Eat my rancid leprotic dick you ass-backwards sack of fuck,
Denis Leary

PS - Fuck Sullivan Tire, too.

if they can get healthy, they are a much better team:

ortiz hurting
manny hurt
schilling fresh off the DL

burnett is pitching like a god, i wouldn't be too concerned about their performance vs. him per se.

i don't think they'll get healthy in time and i think it's more of a dead heat when both teams are full strength, if only because the yanks don't have jd drew.

omar little, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

i say all this as someone who wants the yanks to miss the playoffs from now until teh end times

morbius you're assuming the bosox will actually win another game and make the wild card

omar little, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

I gotta admit I sort of feel bad for the guy. He was rolling along, doing just fine in Texas and then he gets traded, looses his closer job and it all falls apart. He belongs either in the closer role or on the DL. he clearly knows nothing in between.

You guys really are sick.

mattbot, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, but can the Red Sox possibly recover emotionally from blowing a 794-game lead to their arch-rivals, even if the division win is something of a paper title? *cough2006Tigerscough*

yah all year he was racking up wins w/o an elite era - now he's .11 off the pace. i know he pitches in a hitters park so can a stat dude show me some adjusted info or whatnot?

jhøshea, Sunday, 23 September 2007 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

Adjusted ERA+:

Carmona-CLE 146
Beckett-BOS 145
Bedard-BAL 141
Haren-OAK 140
Sabathia-CLE 138
Lackey-LAA 138
Santana-MIN 134
Bannister-KCR 132
Kazmir-TBD 130
Meche-KCR 129

I imagine Sabathia and Carmona will split some votes. (Also: two Royals in the top ten!)
