I sat right next to the home bullpen tonight and I could see the animals in the LF pavillion mercilessly hounding the SF fans who were flying their colors. Did you know that last year in Fresno, Eli Whiteside struck out 40 times in 116 at-bats? In the majors, he struck out 30 times against four walks in 127 at-bats. Yeah, he’s not much of a contact guy. Or a bat control guy. Or an anything to do with hitting guy. He’s a backup catcher. He catches no-hitters and calls a good game. At no point should he be in a position to get the tying run home if you can help it.

So the only reason you leave Whiteside in for a runner-on-third, no-out situation in the eighth inning is if you’re playing for the 13th inning, Dusty-style. You want to make sure that in case the ground opens up and swallows Whiteside in the 12th, you still have a catcher to put in the game. That’s a silly way to play the game, of course, but you can almost see the logic if you squint.

That’s not what Bochy wanted to do, though. He wanted Whiteside to hit. Then Bochy wanted to burn Molina in the very next at-bat. Perfect. It’s conjoined fail, attached at the fiasco. Bruce Bochy did everything possible to ensure that the worst hitter on the team -- on a team filled with bad hitters, there’s still a no-doubt, bottom of the heap, worst on the team, mind you -- got the crucial at-bat. I don’t blame Whiteside. I blame Bruce Bochy. And maybe Whiteside a little bit, but mostly Bochy.

And that’s how you lose a game in which you allow one single. That, and the Giants couldn’t get a single fly ball when they needed to. If you want to know why the Manny Ramirez game wasn’t worth your rage, it’s because you were saving it for this game. Worst game of the year, and it had better hold that title for a long, long time if there is to be no arson.

Giants fans, who watched Zito compile a 31-43 record in his first three seasons with the club, discerned the difference. As the left-hander worked his last inning, they saluted him by chanting his first name, just as they did for home run king Barry Bonds for so many years.

Greg Smith - our no. 2 starter (but only because of the RLRLR obsession of our manager), got shelled for 6 runs before managing an out in the first. He was pulled, ship was steadied, before the hopeless Dbacks pitchers (starting with Kris Benson I think, who is now apparently "injured") gave up 3, 4 and 4 runs before the Rockies becalmed themselves. So yeah, at least half the runs were given up by pitchers completely losing it.

The Giants are #3 in MLB in run differential (behind Tampa and the Yanquis) so it appears that they ~don't need~ to have "enough hitting" to make the playoffs if they can maintain this level of pitching and defense.

well, im going to go out on a limb here and say that they won't go through the year with two pitchers with ERAs under 2 and another 2 with ERAs under 3

i think they will make the playoffs as the wild-card team. i don't think they will beat the Rockies for the division. San Diego will fall off soon. no one in the Central should make it so they really only need to worry about the second place team in the East.

i think they should trade J. Sanchez for a bat, but with F. Sanchez coming back soon maybe they won't even need to do that. F. Sanchez could be a great addition to this team but Downs is doing great in his spot at the moment.

wilson is fine and your point stands but fyi don't use ERA to judge relievers since it doesn't assign blame correctly when guys are brought in or taken out mid-inning (not sure if wilson has been)

tyler clippard on the nats is the ultimate example of this, he has 7 WINS and a 1.80 ERA even though he gave up the game tying hit 4 appearances in a row last week

Wilson is the #22 reliever in MLB in 2010 WXRL which is not great nor good, but rather, average.

The way SD keep playing I can well imagine them making it to the postseason - the confidence those guys must have right now. Madison Bumgarner was ejected from last night's game against Sacramento. I got a great report from a fan in attendance. He said I could post his e-mail to me but asked that his name not be used. Based on what I've heard from other people, it sounds as though Bumgarner did enough to get himself suspended.

The eyewitness report: "We saw Madison Bumgarner pitch last night in Fresno. He was cruising along with a shutout until the sixth inning. Then, Eugenio Velez dropped a pop fly that should've been caught by the center fielder...and Bumgarner came unglued.

"Then he got into a beef with the first base umpire over a close play while covering first. Then got into a beef with the second base umpire over a pickoff play at second (in the seventh inning). The second base umpire tossed him after he lost his cool. He had to be physically restrained from the umpire by his teammates.

"On his way back to the dugout he turned around and threw the baseball into center field. He left with the score tied at 5-5. The Grizzlies scored in the bottom of the 6th so he still got the win."

By the way, Bumgarner obviously was not considered for the Giants' start in Cincinnati on Thursday. If they choose to bypass Todd Wellemeyer, Joe Martinez is the likeliest candidate. He is supposed to pitch that night in Tacoma.

so in the new ESPN the magazine, they have this little sidebar where they anonymously interviewed GMs asking them about the other GMs in the league i.e. "easiest to make a deal with", "toughest to make a deal with", "stubborn GMs" etc

I think that's one of those issues that arises when the starting pitcher cannot complete 5 innings pitched. Scorer is not awarding Runzler a Win for better game pitched, but rather being in the game at the right time.

You're forgetting to give him credit for not just TAKING THE BALL but WANTING TO WIN.

AFAIK, the scorer awards the win to the reliever that pitched most effectively. It doesn't matter when he entered the game. It's not like this happens all that often so it's not like it really matters but in this instance the decision should have been obvious.

so what happened tonight. i saw Martinez batting, so i thought he started the game. my first thought was did they trade J. Sanchez today? well all that happen was he got knocked out early and a relief pitcher got an at bat.

Buster Posey on this road trip went 20/40 a .500 ave, 12 runs, 6 HR with 15 RBI.

i'm ready, though it won't be as fun as the highs that i got from the first half.

Why dont the Giants trade Johnathan Sanchez for Corey Hart when they would still have Cain Lincecum Zito and the Mad Bum? 5th starters on every team suck, dont need them in the playoffs but position players play every day.. Granted Johnathan Sanchez isnt going to be a 5th starter (or necessarily is one now) for the rest of his career but..

If its not worth it for Hart, why dont they go for someone else? Maybe this year isnt the year but you'd think they would make a move to beef up their offense at some point in the next decade..

I think they spent about 20% of the season w/o MadBum, BustaPose, PatBurr & FredSanch. Also TimmayLince sucked for about the first 20% of the season iirc. (otoh, KKKKungFuPanda has sucked all season and *may* be due for a little progression). Considering those guys have all come into their own of late, I think it's safe to say that can ride that out to the end of the season w/o giving up the farm.

West is gonna be tough down the stretch. If anyone blows it its gonna be the Dodgers. =( Bullpen has become porous and crazy Ned is going to be wheeling and dealing at the deadline making sideways moves and giving up the farm.

I think they should either stand pat or get relief help. They already have too many overpaid veterans on the roster as it is.

Molina hit a single in the second inning, a double in the fourth and a grand slam in the fifth inning. Molina came up in the eighth needing only a triple. He had just five three-baggers in his career to that point.

Clayton Kershaw received a five-game suspension for intentionally throwing at Aaron Rowand of the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night, the commissioner's office announced.

Manager Joe Torre and bench coach Bob Schaefer were also disciplined, as each drew a one-game suspension for their actions in that same game.

Kershaw has elected to file an appeal, meaning his suspension will be suspended until the process is complete.

When James Loney called out to Mattingly and he returned to the mound after stepping off it a few feet -- despite plate umpire and Minor League callup Adrian Johnson's warning "No, no, no" -- San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy correctly protested that it was a second trip to the mound.

Because Mattingly disobeyed the umpire's warning, the rule calls for Mattingly to be ejected and for Jonathan Broxton to face the next batter, then be removed. MLB has told the umpires this interpretation was the correct one.

Instead, the umpires ruled that Broxton had to be removed immediately. Mattingly brought in George Sherrill, who didn't have a chance to warm up in the bullpen.

McClelland said the umpires were aware of Mattingly's mistake before Bochy came out of the dugout to talk. Bochy appeared to be unaware that Broxton could have stayed in.

Once Sherrill was in the game, the umpires erred again, allowing him only eight warm-up pitches when he should have received enough pitches to get sufficiently loose. Sherrill then gave up the game-winning double to Andres Torres.

McClelland told Mattingly that Sherrill could all have the pitches he wanted. But the umpires weren't watching: McClelland was explaining why Broxton was removed to the other Dodgers players. Johnson, at home plate, was filling out notes on what had happened and didn't issue a final pitch warning as he would normally. And in the Dodgers' dugout, Mattingly and pitching Rick Honeycutt were talking to each other.

Sherrill said he was actually asked twice if he was ready to go, but he had no idea who was asking the question either time, and he took both questions to be sarcastic.

"When I went by Sherrill, I asked if he was good to go," McClelland said. "He said, 'Yes, I guess.' He could've told me, 'No, I'm not.'"

Torre, who along with Kershaw and bench coach Bob Schaefer were suspended on Wednesday, said he was told by MLB vice president Bob Watson that the umpires made two errors.

"It was a mistake," Torre said. "Broxton should have been allowed to pitch to the hitter and Donnie should have been thrown out, according to the rules. I was consumed with the Sherrill thing. McClelland told Donnie he'd have as many pitches as he needed. The umpire behind the plate stopped him at eight. McClelland said, 'Ready?' and George said, 'I guess so,' and that was that."

Mattingly said he learned about the rule on Wednesday while reading up online. The Dodgers could have protested the decision to remove Broxton, but only at the time of the umpire's decision.

"It's our situation to make the protest," said Torre. "The people supposed to do it weren't even in the dugout. That's me. It was just a screw-up all the way around. We had the right to protest, and we didn't do that. The umpire sort of messed up, too."

"Yeah, they probably would have," Bochy said when asked if the Dodgers had grounds for a review. "It might have caused everybody to review the rule."
