Now that the Angels have Alberto Callaspo, clearly the West is theirs for the taking.

Considering the season Joba's having, the idea that the Yankees aren't willing to give him up for Dan Haren is fucking weird.
― no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:23 (fifteen years ago)
I think the D-backs 'win' that turn of events. WTF would you trade Haren for Joba? I might need one more b/c prospect if they threw in Montero too.
― mayor jingleberries, Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:37 (fifteen years ago)
I think there would be more than just Joba involved in the hypothetical deal.
― no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Saturday, 24 July 2010 23:48 (fifteen years ago)
yeah that deal was falsified from what i can tell
no one should be trading a player as good as haren to the yankees without getting montero back, the rest of their system is pretty much crap

The Angels have acquired Dan Haren from Arizona in exchange for Joe Saunders, Patrick Corbin, Rafael Rodriguez, and a player to be named later
Corbin is pitching okay in high-A, Rodriguez is organizational filler, Joe Saunders is Joe Saunders
d-backs probably lose this one bad unless the PTBNL is somehow mike trout

Neyer pooh-poohs Twins on Capps deal:

― kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Friday, 30 July 2010 19:37 (fifteen years ago)
Neyer, in typical fashion, neglects to notice the trend of Rauch shitting the bed in his last 5-7 appearances. Rauch is not pitching like a guy you want to have faith in going into the playoff stretch. I'm not defending the deal it's just Neyer has this tendency to overlook trends in favor of "this season he has done this" and not drilling down and noticing that dude looks like he's on the verge of a major collapse.

unless you're a scout and can recognize a change in mechanics or something, we don't really know the difference between "on the verge of a major collapse" and "had a bunch of bad outings in a row but still the same guy"
if there's a counter-argument to neyer it's that ramos hasn't hit at AAA this year and now there's doubts about him being better than average

i don't think that there's any debate over the fact that john rauch shouldn't be closing for a playoff contender, mostly just that their pursuit of a closer and not a starter was probably very much the wrong route

Ludwick, not Franklin. So it's Ludwick to the Padres, Westbrook to the Cardinals, and the Padres are also giving up two prospects: Cory Kluber to the Indians and Nicholas Greenwood to the Cardinals.

Dodgers give up a 2b man who makes 400k and 2 decent aa prospects for 8-10 starts of Ted Lilly and fuckin Ryan Theriot.
This makes the team worse, addresses a need we dont really have, and will result in us being 4-5 games back instead of 7. Colletti u r gay.

Hey, Theriot is an EXPERT at hitting singles, and only singles, every 4 at bats or so. He could play a key role in situations that require a 25% of a single.
― "goof proof cooking, I love it!" (Z S), Saturday, 31 July 2010 18:20 (fifteen years ago)
I think Theriot was a guy the Cubs insisted be included, so really it's just for Lilly.

it's not so much that he was put on waivers, but that the dodgers claimed him. iirc, there are 2 first rounders at stake for a type A that fits well with Nats mgmt style dealing Dunn. Plus Coletti is going crazy trying to break out of this horrible slide into the basement.

Pretty sure its to block him from the Giants just to be a hater. Ned is stupid, but he cant be that stupid.
The Thome thing was done to get a lefty pinch hitter with power for the world series. Kenny Williams basically had an agreement with Thome that he would trade him to a contender if he could and he did. I think he thought he could get a return for the 'favor' when he called up and asked for Manny this year in return for jack shit.
